Top Technicians Bring Skill, Speed & Smarts to Samsung National Skills and Repair Competition

11/26/2024

This past month, Samsung Care hosted its annual National Skills and Repair Competitions, bringing together top Mobile Experience (MX), Consumer Electronics, and Home Appliance (CE) technicians from across the country to showcase and put their skills to the test. The event underscores Samsung’s commitment not only to providing a customer-first care experience but also to fostering continuous learning and skill development for its technicians.

Interest in trade careers is on the rise, especially among Gen Z, who are driving a new wave of enthusiasm for hands-on professions. According to a recent Harris Poll, 78% of Americans report seeing more young adults pursuing trade careers, with nearly a quarter of those not currently in a trade considering a switch—particularly Gen Z (50%) and Millennials (42%).

Through initiatives like the National Skills Competition, Samsung is fueling this movement by giving its technicians an engaging way to develop new skills, refine their expertise, and thrive in a competitive, fun learning environment that fosters camaraderie and professional growth.

“Our annual competitions are a core part of Samsung’s commitment to delivering proactive, high-quality care,” said Mark Williams, Vice President of Customer Care at Samsung Electronics America. “These events recognize our technicians’ skills and support their growth in a fast-growing trade. It’s inspiring to see their pride in Samsung and in showcasing our latest innovations—all united by the shared mission of delivering the best experience for our customers.”

First up, at the sixth annual Samsung CE Care Skills Competition, 15 talented technicians gathered to vie for the coveted title of “Top Tech.” The top five performers advanced to the finals at the Samsung Technical Training Center in New Jersey, where they competed in tests for accuracy, speed, and customer satisfaction. These challenges required participants to troubleshoot quickly and handle complex scenarios with precision, showcasing their expertise in appliance repair.

“I was honored to compete against four other contestants. Samsung is always on the cutting edge of technology. Through this experience, we got to work on five different products, showcase our technical knowledge and empathy skills in customer interactions, and reconnect with people I hadn’t seen in a long time,” said third place winner Rodney Perschon from The Repair Pros.

“I’m very grateful to be here and honored to be selected for this competition. It’s a point of pride, and I’ve received a lot of support from Samsung. When I get to the customer, I try to better understand their needs and will share what I learned today with my colleagues,” said first-place winner Kwang Kim from NISI USA.

This year’s competition followed #1 rankings in TVs for overall customer satisfaction and #1 in home appliance service experience for the second year in row in the 2024 American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI®) survey. Samsung TVs also achieved #1 in product quality, service quality and service experience.

Next up, Samsung MX Care techs took the stage for their annual Repair Competition — a showcase on improving device repair quality, customer satisfaction and technician skills. Fifteen participants gathered at Samsung’s Plano, TX campus to test their skills in speed, accuracy, and compliance drills. After diagnosing issues, technicians quickly disassembled and reassembled devices, followed by quality checks to ensure craftsmanship.

“There’s a real sense of camaraderie here. That’s what Samsung is all about, and it’s one of the reasons I love the company and their products. It’s always great seeing familiar faces and reconnecting with people I met five years ago,” said third place winner Andrew Coleman from uBreakiFix.

“This is a one-of-a-kind experience. You get to learn from others and find new ways to tackle problems,” said first place winner Jimmy Hernandez from Samsung Branded NYC.

The annual Repair Competition highlights how Samsung continues to lead in customer satisfaction with leading mobile care options — by investing in opportunities for technicians and expanding convenient care offerings. Over the past several years, Samsung has grown its service network, achieving #1 Quality and Service Coverage in the U.S. for mobile device. Additionally, Samsung earned #1 customer satisfaction and #1 overall service quality among 5G mobile devices in the 2024 American Customer Satisfaction Index Survey.
