Transforming Vehicles into Places Where Passengers Would Love to Stay

The Digital Cockpit 2021 was designed with a focus on simplifying communication and delivering fun on-the-go experiences.

The Digital Cockpit’s Drive mode is optimized to present drivers with a variety of information without obstructing their view of the road.

The solution combines a wide, 49-inch QLED display with a sound system that makes content feel that much more immersive. These technologies allow users to enjoy a customised entertainment experience, while also enabling them to communicate with the world around them.

That’s the true beauty of the Digital Cockpit in a nutshell: its displays, which are customised for various use cases, transform the vehicle into a versatile and convenient all-purpose space. One of the solution’s greatest strengths is its 5G technology, which enhances users’ experience by allowing them to utilise these features without interruptions.

Media mode makes full use of the Digital Cockpit 2021’s spacious Front Panoramic Display.

Wouldn’t it be nice if your car could serve as a mobile office? The Digital Cockpit makes this possible with tools that help users maximise their productivity when they’re on the move. The solution makes it easy to manage all kinds of work, supports video conferencing, and even includes tools for editing video clips. The Digital Cockpit’s interior proves that it is possible to work comfortably from your car with hardware that supports seamless mobile productivity.

▲ The Digital Cockpit 2021 not only supports video conferencing, but also includes tools to help users record and edit videos.

Safety is paramount when it comes to car design. To help foster a safe and relaxing driving environment, the Digital Cockpit 2021 features an expanded version of the Samsung Health service that’s included in Samsung’s latest smartphones and TVs.

Automotive Samsung Health analyzes passengers’ conditions utilizing a combination of cameras and wearable and mobile devices installed in the vehicle.

The new service, known as Automotive Samsung Health, analyses passengers’ health status before boarding. It also regularly monitors passengers’ stress levels and will adjust the vehicle’s lighting, scent, or music in an effort to help them relax. In addition, by analysing their sleeping patterns and the movement of their eyelids, the service can help ensure that drivers remain awake and alert when on the road.

(Left) The Control Display on the rear center armrest includes simple controls for adjusting the temperature and volume.

The Digital Cockpit’s Control Display on the rear centre armrest includes a touch-based control pad that allows passengers to manage a variety of environment-related functions via simple and intuitive gestures. The controls automatically disappear when passengers aren’t using them, enhancing the interior’s modern look.

Spending a Day With the Digital Cockpit 2021

What are some good ways to utilise Samsung’s latest Digital Cockpit, which is customised to cater to our ever-changing lives? Check out the following use cases to find out how the Digital Cockpit 2021’s detailed features will help redefine vehicles as we know them – transforming them from a simple means of transportation into a space for managing aspects of daily life.

Case #1
My favorite video game is coming out today, and I can’t wait to play it with my friends. The large screen and powerful sound create the perfect environment for focusing on games and making memories with friends.

We’re living in an era of incredible content. The Digital Cockpit 2021 offers you the freedom to enjoy that content anytime, anywhere. It does this by transforming your vehicle into a mobile entertainment hub that’s just as comfortable as your living room.

The Digital Cockpit 2021’s Front Panoramic Display is optimised for enjoying content.

Take the Digital Cockpit’s Front Panoramic Display, for example. When driving, only the top half of the screen is exposed to avoid obstructing the driver’s view. However, when the vehicle stops or parks, it adjusts the display to a more prominent position to enable users to take full advantage of its 49-inch screen. The spacious display allows you to enjoy real-time gaming, online concerts, live broadcasts and more at a level of immersion that makes you feel like you’re really there.

(Left) The steering wheel includes a built-in screen with controls for the Front Panoramic Display. (Right) The backseat display can be adjusted to either a horizontal or a vertical position depending on the situation.

In the centre of the steering wheel, where most vehicles would feature a car horn, the Digital Cockpit features a driver-exclusive screen. It’s yet another example of how the Digital Cockpit takes the traditional automobile interior to the next level. Now, rather than using physical buttons to honk the horn or activate turn signals, drivers can utilise an 8.8-inch touchscreen LCD display. The display works as a controller when enjoying entertainment, making it easy to play content, adjust the volume, and navigate the menu. The display maximises users’ enjoyment of the Digital Cockpit by providing an optimal tool for managing its functions.

To maximise users’ sound experience, the speakers are also installed on headrest of each seat. This allows users to fully enjoy the HARMAN sound system’s premium audio performance, and makes it easier for them to immerse themselves in their favourite games.

The Out-Cabin Screen offers users a premium entertainment experience when they’re outside of the vehicle.

The vehicle also features an Out-Cabin Screen located on its back side that allows users to enjoy a wide range of content when engaging in outdoor activities like camping.

Case #2
We are living in an era in which we’re simultaneously creating, consuming, and communicating through content. Today, I’ll use the Digital Cockpit 2021 to make a video about how I spent my day with it. After using its built-in tools to make some quick edits, I’ll upload my video to my social media accounts.

The Digital Cockpit’s studio mode offers tools to help users create dynamic videos even when they’re on the go. It works in conjunction with the vehicle’s in-cabin cameras, which are located in the upper part of each seat. After recording a memorable moment, users have the option to create their own content utilising various editing tools. To help make each video that much more unique, we recommend trying out a variety of filters depending on the mood of the clip.

After filming, it’s time to utilise the 13.2-inch Centre Information Display located in the centre of the front seat. This touchscreen display allows users to conveniently manage a wide range of apps and functions. Included among them is the Share content function, which lets users instantly upload recorded videos or share them with passengers in the rear using the Digital Cockpit’s backseat display.

Users can easily upload the content using the Centre Information Display, which is located in the centre of front seat.

Case #3
I’m feeling tired today, so I’m concerned that I might not be as alert as I’ll need to be when I hit the road. I’ll need to drive through areas with especially heavy traffic. Can the Digital Cockpit 2021 help me?

What driver wouldn’t want the assistance of a helpful eye that can scan the road in real time to help you arrive at your destination safe and sound? The Digital Cockpit 2021 makes this possible with its 360 Vision Monitoring System. When driving, parking or stopping, the system recognises vehicles and pedestrians near the car in real time utilising a combination of four cameras and deep learning technology. By keeping you abreast of everything it sees, it helps reduce risks when you’re on the road.

Located in the top-centre of the windshield, the Digital Cockpit 2021’s Floating Window display presents drivers with a variety of useful information. This includes insights on the vehicle’s surroundings, as well as traffic signals, road signs and weather information.

The vehicle’s exterior features a front-mounted screen that allows drivers to display messages for pedestrians or other drivers

To help them navigate uncertain roads, the Digital Cockpit 2021 allows drivers to communicate with those around them using audiovisual methods. The vehicle is capable of recognising when pedestrians are nearby, and its front-mounted display can be used to display messages for pedestrians to help ensure their safety.

The vehicle’s directional speaker is much softer than traditional, loud car horns, and allows drivers to grab the attention of other drivers and pedestrians at crosswalks in a way that reduces noise pollution in urban areas.

Combining immersive entertainment with next-level safety functions and productivity tools, the vehicles of the future will be so much more than a means to get from Point A to Point B. By continuously updating its Digital Cockpit solution, and unlocking new and enriching in-vehicle experiences, Samsung is bringing us closer to making that exciting future a reality.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 18 January 2021 – Our lives are permeated by sound – from our alarms going off in the morning, to the noises made by our home

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 18 January 2021 – Our lives are permeated by sound – from our alarms going off in the morning, to the noises made by our home appliances. From vigorous sounds to fun ones, the power of sound fills every corner of our lives with a range of different tones and moods. At CES 2021, Samsung embarked on a fresh communicative journey with its new brand sound, ‘The Voyage’.

A few notable sounds come to mind when we think of Samsung – namely, the Galaxy smartphone ringtone ‘Over the Horizon’ and the tone issued by the company’s home appliances, titled ‘Beyond the Horizon’. However, this is the first time that the company has sought to communicate directly with its consumers through its brand sound.

‘The Voyage’ represents the overall brand identity of Samsung and was created by sound designers with extensive experience in developing sounds for product functions. In line with the company’s existing sounds, the new melody presents a simplified musical scale so that the brand sound can be used in a broad range of applications.

The basic melody of the new brand sound consists of four simple notes. ‘Do’, the tonic note, symbolises the reliability and stability of Samsung products. The inflection notes in the middle represent the willingness to meet challenges and continue moving forward. ‘Re’ is the last tension note, and expresses the company’s hope and excitement for the future. These four notes together create a sound that encapsulates the spirit of the ‘Relentless Pioneer’ – the brand persona of Samsung Electronics, which never stops challenging itself and innovating to improve the consumer experience.

(ALL SOUNDS CAN BE HEARD AT What Melody Opened Samsung’s CES 2021? The New Corporate Brand Sound, ‘The Voyage’ – Samsung Global Newsroom)

Samsung plans to develop various arrangements of this melody for a range of marketing activities. The melody will maintain a single motif, but will be arranged following Samsung’s brand tonality of bold, genuine, contemporary, and playful to deliver a range of atmospheric effects. The company also plans to establish positive communications with its users by integrating versions of the melody into not only products but stores, events and digital content, enabling consumers to experience the products and services in new ways.

An official from Samsung’s Global Marketing Centre said, “The sense of hearing can establish image awareness much more quickly than sight or touch, which are used extensively in a range of fields including the luxury goods sector.” The official added, “Samsung Electronics is also planning to use its new brand sound in emotionally-oriented brand talks to strengthen its corporate image as young and playful.”

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 12 January 2021 – There are essential elements to making the dreams of those who launch start-ups come true – from brilliant ideas, to esteemed colleagues who share the pains, gains, and persistence that allow the ventures to endure. Above all else, these start-ups need a ‘stage’. The stage is where ideas are shared, feedback is gained from future users, and investors meet their potential partners.

*The above images are not the actual ID but a design draft.

Through C-Lab, Samsung provides opportunities for select projects and start-ups, with the final list of selected companies being announced at international events such as CES 2021. Through not only C-Lab Inside1 and C-Lab Outside,2 but also the C-Lab Outside companies that are selected in affiliation with the Daegu & Gyeongbuk Centers for Creative Economy & Innovation (CCEI), Samsung secures chances for companies to join the international stage. These efforts allow the stepping stones of growth to be broadened for an increasing number of start-ups.

So exactly which start-ups were chosen to take the stage at the CES 2021 digital exhibition? Samsung Newsroom met with two start-ups and one in-house venture from C-Lab to find out more about them as they prepare for the upcoming CES exhibition.

Tell us about Food & Sommelier.

We are one of the teams selected as an in-house venture within C-Lab Inside. We provide a service that recommends the best food and wine combinations according to users’ preferences. While collaborating on R&D with the Korea International Sommelier Association (KISA), we selected elements that affect the suitability of food-wine combinations. The elements concerning food consisted of 28 ingredients, 12 cooking methods, and 47 sauces. For wine, the important factors included body, acidity, aroma, and sweetness. After converting these elements into numerical figures, we developed the capability to recommend the food and wine combinations that would prove most attractive to our users. For example, the classifications of foods include beef, chicken, pork, oily fish, and mushrooms, while some examples of the cooking methods are blanching, steaming, boiling, and grilling. With proven recommendations from Korea’s major sommeliers, Food & Sommelier is striving to create a service that is reliable for customers.

What compelled the company to provide food and wine combination recommendations?

We have often witnessed situations where waiters and waitresses were confused about what wine they should recommend when helping customers. As we learned more about wine, we realised that the field of wine is somewhat influenced by IT. The global wine market is expected to continue to grow in the coming years. As wine becomes more and more popular, there will be more demand for our service. Once our service is combined with IT, anyone will be able to enjoy dishes with the appropriate wine to match.

How do I use the service?

First, start your app on your smartphone and take a picture of the food. Once the program recognises the dish, the matching algorithm will recommend some wines with high match rates.

How will Food & Sommelier change our day-to-day lives in the future?

In the past, customers had to rely on the recommendations of store clerks or price ranges to pick a wine. In the future, however, Food & Sommelier will help them conveniently select a wine or dish based on their preferences by providing information via kiosks, a smartphone app, and tablet PCs. Wherever there is an establishment that serves wine, Food & Sommelier will provide a gourmet restaurant experience with sommelier-quality recommendations.

What are your goals?

South Korea is on the fringes when it comes to the wine market. By incorporating the market with the world’s best IT, however, we are sure that the Korean market can come to be a leader in the ‘food tech’ market. Food & Sommelier would also like to go beyond the wine market, and hopes to widen its scope of pairing solutions to include a range of other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Tell us about Counter Culture Company.

We are one of the start-ups selected from C-Lab Outside. We operate a global K-pop online home training service called ED Online K-pop Training Agency. Instructors who have experience nurturing famous K-pop stars provide comprehensive lectures on not only dancing, but also vocal training, fitness, makeup, and styling. This service provides international fans with the actual training that K-pop singers receive.

What motivated you to provide this service?

As K-pop gains international popularity, people are increasingly interested in finding out how Korea’s K-pop singers are fostered. Chinese and European singers-to-be are already spending tens of thousands of dollars per year to receive K-pop training in Korea.

We have paid close attention to providing world-class online lectures, and other services that deliver the know-how of international millionaires, at reasonable prices without any time or space restrictions for use. Accordingly, we wondered if we could incorporate this into online services that teach dance or deliver vocal training. Once the future K-pop trainees learn basic moves and receive vocal training online before starting their official training in Korea, the entertainment management companies that deliver the in-person training may be able to reduce their costs as well.

How do users utilise the service?

With our service, users can basically take online K-pop classes. By syncing their smartphone cameras, users can use ‘mirror studio’ to compare their moves with those of the instructor and ‘live class’ to experience real-time interactive training. To truly improve, trainees require monitoring and professional feedback. Thus, ED provides assignments for practice every week and professional feedback regarding the submitted performances. Moreover, users can check their progress by going through monthly evaluations along with Korean K-pop trainees.

How will Counter Culture Company change our day-to-day lives in the future?

Our service will allow any K-pop trainee to take high-quality lessons regardless of space and time, even if they live far away from Korea. ED is also planning to launch an online audition service in collaboration with some entertainment management companies. In the past, those companies had to travel overseas to find talent, which required a lot of effort and expense. If ED can develop online audition capabilities for those qualified trainees, however, those management companies will be able to find more talent, regardless of recruiting restrictions.

What are your goals?

It has been about seven months since the official launch of the service. So far, we have been enjoying meaningful encounters while providing better user experiences and having our business grow at the same time. K-pop is a music genre that anyone can enjoy. We hope that our service will help global fans of K-pop communicate with one another and see their dreams come true by going beyond time, space, and language barriers.

Tell us about Salin.

Salin is a start-up that is supported by C-Lab Outside through the Daegu Center for Creative Economy & Innovation. With Salin, users can create avatars that resemble themselves to share content and communicate in virtual or augmented reality (VR or AR). There are many cooperative platforms in the market, although the purpose of those platforms is generally limited to meetings and training. Salin’s platform can be utilised for various purposes such as virtual concert halls for sharing performance videos, online training venues and virtual meeting rooms. In addition, anyone can easily utilise our technology through their laptops and smartphones, which are easier to access than smart glasses and VR headsets.

What made the company want to provide this service?

Up to now, most companies have been focused on applying VR and AR technologies to game services. However, we decided that these technologies were more suitable for services in the areas of media, education and collaboration.

How do users utilise the service?

First, users activate the Salin app with a laptop, smartphone or VR/AR headset. Once they have uploaded a selfie, they can create avatars that look like themselves and act in response to their movement. After that, all they have to do is use functions such as 3D writing and multi-video sharing to invite others into 3D spaces and enjoy talking with them.

How will Salin change our day-to-day lives in the future?

Imagine 50 avatars talking to each other on Salin’s platform – that would constitute a remarkable experience. This is a whole other level compared to 50 people exchanging messages online. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, college students have started using more virtual meeting services for not only studying but also social gatherings. By utilising Salin, users will not only do better work but also enjoy a variety of daily activities in VR and AR environments.

What are your goals?

Last year, Salin’s platform was used to view sports events and performances, for remote collaboration work and for docent services. This year, we plan to launch more services to support large-scale exhibitions and conferences with hundreds of remote users. At Salin, we hope to provide unique services in such a way that more users and companies can combine their businesses with our platform.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 07 January 2021 – 2020 was a year like no other, one that quickly and unexpectedly shook up our lives and reimagined our normal. We gained perspective on the things that really matter, like our health and our loved ones, and the experiences we truly value.

And to adapt to our new way of living, we embraced technology at warp speed – using it to connect with others and find new joy in our everyday, right from the comfort of our homes. We used it to continue moving forward – in education, work, and even celebrating major life moments virtually at a time when it felt like everything else stood still.

Last year, Samsung kicked off the new decade at CES and shared our vision to enable experiences that make new technologies increasingly meaningful in our lives. We talked about a world where our living spaces would become workout studios and meeting spaces, and kitchens would become hyper-personalised to your unique needs. Little did we know then that those experiences would become so important, so quickly.

So, while we may not be meeting in-person in Las Vegas this year, this may be the most exciting CES yet as we embark on the next stage of this journey where we focus on experiences that improve your life and the world we live in. Together, we can create a Better Normal for All.

This Better Normal for All is centered around the idea that with the right technology, we’re ready for a better, brighter future. I cannot wait to welcome you to Samsung’s CES press conference to unveil what the Better Normal will look like, beginning with technology personalised for you, AI to improve your home life, and expanding through innovation that makes a real difference to our society and our world. Here is a sneak peek at what I will be announcing:

A Better, More Personalised Experience

Our vision for a Better Normal for All begins and ends with you. We’ve all spent more time at home, expecting more out of our living spaces and for many, this has been increasingly challenging. That’s why we’re introducing smarter technologies that enrich your life through seamless personalised experiences, from helping you master your yoga technique and achieve your home fitness goals, to navigating a new diet with tailored recipes and intuitive connected kitchen appliances.

AI Empowering a Better Home

Ultimately, the Better Normal will not look the same for you or me – it will revolve around everyone’s unique needs and habits. We must create technologies that adapt to our ways of life and add value to everything we do, that make new experiences more accessible and exciting. Just imagine how much easier it would be if you had a trusted partner around the house, an extension of yourself that could help set the table or put groceries away, recognising and handling objects with care and precision. Well imagine no more, because at CES, we’re going to show you how our cutting-edge research is working to bring an extra pair of hands to your home. We’re advancing our AI-infused technologies to enable you to do more than ever, and we cannot wait to show you how robotics will support us on the journey to a Better Normal.

Technology Shaping a Brighter Future

And throughout this journey, we must acknowledge our responsibility to serve not just our users, but our planet, and our society. While technology can reshape the way people communicate and experience the world today, it is also the enabler of a brighter future. As we overcome one of the biggest challenges of our lifetime, we must stand together to ensure that our Better Normal also benefits the generations to come.

At CES, Samsung will share more about its sustainability vision. As a global leader in technology, breaking down barriers to a better future will continue to be pivotal to our mission as we put people, society and the planet at the center of everything we do.

We are at the beginning of a very unique opportunity to not just overcome the past year’s adversity, but to create a Better Normal for All, and I’m so excited to share more about how Samsung is making this a reality. I hope you’ll join me for the Samsung virtual CES press conference on Monday, January 11th.
