One of the reasons we can get products delivered safely to our home is the science of packaging. However, these packages are often left behind as soon as they make it to our living room or office. Therefore, it is important for the planet earth that they are as eco-friendly as possible. Here is what Samsung has done recently.

Samsung has always been active with its commitment to be environment friendly. Samsung has recently begun to use the Korean industry’s first sugar cane film for TV accessories packaging; basically, we are talking about environmentally friendly bioplastic bag.

Samsung was awarded Vinçotte ‘s eco-certification in December of 2013 in Belgium. Vinçotte, a Belgian accredited inspection and certification organization, awards its “OK Biobased” certification marks to products with 20% or higher bio material, and Samsung has obtained this as well for eco-friendliness in Belgium. In Korea, KBMP, Korean Bio Material Packaging Association awards its “Biobased” certification marks to products that contain 25% or higher bio material.

Samsung Electronics has dedicated the last 7 months to developing bio-plastic film for packaging. The development was finalized when Samsung’s bio-plastic film qualified for the certification with more than the minimum level of bio material content needed by Beta research institute, a U.S. accredited certification organization for Bio-material contents.

On February 15th, Samsung began to integrate Bio-plastic (which contains raw sugar cane material) into its packaging materials for remote controls, TV accessories, and manuals. As you can see, it doesn’t look different to the conventional plastic bags, but of course, it is much eco-friendlier.

Moreover, since last February, Samsung has been using boxes made with 100% recyclable eco-friendly paper and eco-friendly soy oil ink, which has been certified by the American Soybean Association. Besides the fact that is much environmentally friendly, it looks just like a regular box (or possibly cooler?)

Through these initiatives, Samsung Electronics plans to lower the pollution level caused by volatile organic compounds and save 686 tons of greenhouse gas emission per year, which is equivalent to planting 240,000 trees per year. That sounds like a lot of trees.
