8th Annual SamsungSkills Competition a Great Success
The 8th annual SamsungSkills Competition took place in Korea from April 28 to 30, and was heavily attended by skilled personnel from Samsung and its partners from around the globe.
The annual competition, organized by the SamsungSkills Office, aimed to discover and cultivate remarkable skilled workers within the Samsung community.
As many as 141 competitors participated in this year’s match from five Samsung affiliated companies, namely, Samsung Electronics, Samsung Display, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Samsung SDI and Samsung Heavy Industries; 20 foreign branches from 9 different countries including China, India, and Brazil; and 2 overseas partner companies. The increasing number of overseas participants (66 in total, a threefold increase from the previous year) proved the competition’s growing global presence.
The competition was proceeded in seven skills categories including two new skills, computer numerical control (CNC) milling machining and optimization of injection condition, both of which are important technical skills in the manufacturing field today, as well as the smartphone industry. The five remaining skills included automation system construction, electricity control system construction, manufacturing equipment and jig design, and welding.
The Samsung competitors of Team Korea gave a demonstration on several skills. They are expected to boast their remarkable skills at the 43rd WorldSkills Competition São Paulo, which is to be held in Brazil this August. Team Korea is regarded as the highest ranking team, as they have taken first place in the world competition a total of 18 times. Considering 14 of the 47 competitors of Team Korea are Samsung employees, the company’s global prowess in the manufacturing field is indisputable.
The SamsungSkills Office also invited 440 students from seven technical high schools to the competition so that they could be mentored by their skilled seniors and also have a hands-on experience with various advanced automation machineries.
“Advanced manufacturing technology expertise is one of our core competencies, and our excellent skilled personnel are the ones who have been building the foundation,” President Jong-Ho Kim of the Global Technology Center at Samsung Electronics emphasized. “Any lessons or informative outcomes of the competition will be shared within our community, and thus upgrade our manufacturing capability,” he added.
Samsung has sponsored the WorldSkills Competition and the National Skills Competition since 2007 and has hosted the SamsungSkills Competition since 2008 to encourage Samsung skilled workers to carve out their futures through their skills.
