Now that fall has arrived, there is plenty to look forward to and celebrate. Leaves are changing colors and crops have grown ripe, signaling a time for celebration and spending time with loved ones. China has its harvest festival, the U.S. has Thanksgiving, and Korea has Chuseok. Despite the different names, they all are holidays for giving thanks for the hard work and effort of farmers and sharing food with family and friends. The Samsung SMART TV has some unique applications to both inform and entertain as the weather cools and families gather together.

For those of you that might be unfamiliar, here is a short introduction to Chuseok, a Korean holiday that takes place around this time of year, the 15th day of the 8th month on the lunar calendar. To celebrate Chuseok, Korean families come together and perform ancestral rites called Jesa. Jesa involves preparing food and bowing to ancestors with gratitude and respect. After the rites, they share food and play traditional board games such as yutnori.

The preparation for Chuseok can take quite a long time, but it’s well worth it! To help both entertain and educate, Samsung Electronics has released Smart TV apps for Chuseok. Setting up the food for Jesa is very complex, and there are specific and different types and arrangements. Bowing may seem simple, but in truth there are many different layers to the action, so much so that sometimes even Koreans get confused. To help with the holiday season, Smart TV now features apps for setting up the table for jesa, taking bows, and yutnori lessons. They’re fun and useful for not only Koreans, but also anyone interested in Korean culture.

Of course, there aren’t just apps on Korean culture. The motion-controlled ‘Angry Birds’ application allows you to control the actions on the screen without having to hold or touch anything. There’s also a ‘2012 London Games’ application for the London Olympic Games. This application includes 100m dash, 110m hurdles, weightlifting, javelin, shooting, and archery. If you’ve ever dreamed about winning the gold at the Olympics, here’s your chance!

The SMART TV has so much to offer, and here’s to hoping that it will make you fall season a little happier!
