So far, we’ve checked out the unboxing of the Galaxy Note 4, purposely dropped it, built a mechanical gluteus maximus to have it sat on hundreds of time to assure you that you get what you expect with the Galaxy Note 4. We’ve also had one of our editors review some of the more interesting features of the Galaxy Note 4 as well, just so you know the Note 4 is tough but smart.

This time we’ve decided to talk to the actual manufacturing team of the Galaxy Note 4 to see what they can tell us about the actual process of making this amazing device. So, we took a field trip to Smart City, one of many places around the world where the Galaxy Note 4 is manufactured.

The Game of Metal Frame

We’ve already gone over in detail about how the metal frame of the Galaxy Alpha is manufactured in the factory, so you might be familiar with the complex process of manufacturing it. Galaxy Note 4 is the first of the Note series to feature the metal frame.

As you know, working with metallic materials requires relatively more time and effort compared to other materials. One of the most challenging parts of the manufacturing is the ‘diamond cut’ process, because of the precision it requires.

For example, the edge is ergonomically designed to provide a better sense of grip, but it also gives a modern premium feeling with increased durability. Therefore, the manufacturing needs to be as accurate as possible to deliver every factor of the design concept of the Galaxy Note 4. This is definitely easier said than done, considering a single minor scratch on the cut renders a product defective.

Mass Producing and Minimizing Defects

The Galaxy Note 4 is a mass-produced flagship device. Therefore, minimizing defects is critical, especially since the Galaxy Note 4 features a delicate metal frame.

The manufacturing team put a lot of effort into minimizing the number of defects before the manufacturing process even began. For example, the manufacturing team had implemented new technologies and processes before the mass producing stage.

The metal frame of the Galaxy Note 4 also posed a challenge for the quality control process. For example, when metal frames touch each other, it can cause a scratch, which as we know is enough to render the device defective. Therefore, not only did they have to inspect one device at a time, the team had to come up with a way avoid any potential damage, such as placing a soft bar between each device.

Galaxy Note 4 Quality Assurance

Now, you have a better idea of how people at Samsung assure the quality of the Galaxy Note 4 being shipped and sold around the world. Although the Galaxy Note 4 is as technically advanced as it gets for mobile devices, it requires a very analog process for it to be delivered to you with credibility. Basically, all you have to do is just enjoy the fine features and functions of the Galaxy Note 4.

Epilogue

manufacturing team Galaxy Note 4

The team spent a lot of time in making sure no defects happen, mostly because the team was more passionate than ever with the expectation they had for the Galaxy Note 4. According to MK Song, a senior manager of the Main Manufacturing Team at the Mobile Communication Division of Samsung Electronics, this expectation influenced everyone who was involved in the Galaxy Note 4 project, from device development, component quality, hardware, device manufacturing to software. From brainstorming to problem solving, each department worked together from the beginning to the end of the product development. The communication and the teamwork were better than ever.
