Inside the Design: Blood Analyzer (LABGEO A20A)
Stylish is not a common adjective for the device known as a “blood analyzer,” but take one look at the photo, and you will see that this one certainly is as sleek as they come. It’s called LABGEO A20A, and it’s made by Samsung Electronics. We know that when you think of Samsung Electronics, you probably think of smartphones, computers, and cameras, but it doesn’t end there!
It shouldn’t be an overwhelming surprise though. In fact, you might remember that we’ve already introduced this stylish medical gadget when it won a Gold Award at this year’s IDEA (International Design Excellence Awards). Now it’s time to go behind-the-scenes with the designers of the gold medal winning blood analyzer LABGEO A20A.
Gold Medal Worthy Product at IDEA 2013: Samsung Electronics Blood Analyzer
A famous Australian architect, Harry Seidler, said, “Good design doesn’t date.” This is especially true for medical products such as blood analyzers, because the average life of the product is fairly long. Not only did the judges recognize LABGEO A20A’s timeless design aesthetic, but they were also pleased with the minimization of movements of the components and therefore the reduction of the machine’s motion errors.

One of the judges at IDEA 2013, David Perschel, noted that the design of Gold-medal winning ‘Blood Analyzer (LABGEO A20A)’ was very gratifying. The product was also recognized for its design aesthetic at the iF Design Awards.
Medical Device Design Must Value Function over Form
The designers of LABGEO A20A are more than fully aware that the main purpose of the product is to provide safety and reliance for consumers. The designers’ priority was obvious and it was that exact priority that inspired the unique and innovative design of this product.
Members of the Design Group tried extremely hard to create qualified and reliable medical devices.
During the process of designing a medical device, various scenarios need to be considered including user convenience, reliance, after-service, and shipping efficiency. Therefore, members of Design Group which designed Samsung Electronics Blood Analyzer (LABGEO A20A), considered all the different aspects from the consumers’ perspective, and then applied it in their design.
There were absolutely no set answers to the numerous questions and concerns that the designers had. The process was extremely challenging, but by sketching, editing, and creating mock-up products, designers gradually finished LABGEO A20A.
Rising to the Top of the International Design World in Six Years!
It would be a mistake to think that the success of LABGEO A20A happened overnight. Samsung Electronics began to design blood analyzers back in 2008. Since then, Samsung Electronics has been working hard to evolve its design. Eventually, the hard work and creativity were recognized by the world industrial design industry and in six short years, it has become to be known as the best design. Without Samsung designers’ understanding of the product and endless efforts, the accolades would not have come this quickly.
Junghoon Kim, Group Leader (Design Group), has a special vision in the product design.
As you might have noticed while hearing from Junghoon Kim, all the awards are just the icing on the cake. The designers’ main focus is simple; to deliver the best product with the best design for its function. Next time you see a ‘Blood Analyzer (LABGEO A20A)’ at the hospital, you can rest assured that the technology is the most up-to-date and of course, stylish.
