Hari Raya, literally meaning celebration in Malaysian, or Hari Raya Adilfitri is a religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide. It is a special day to mark the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. Like Christmas or New Years, Hari Raya tends to remind us of family. It is a time to look around and recognize the ones who truly care about you and matter to you the most. The video clip below shows a day of Hari Raya and how the separated family members are brought together by their mother’s effort to make a family portrait. As you’ll see, they not only share memories, but create new ones as well.

Thinking back, when was the last time your family was all together? Personally, I know how difficult it could be, especially, if your family live in the opposite side of the country as mine does or live in the other side of the globe. As some of you might have experienced, distance between the love ones could be challenging. So, you always make grand plan for reunion to make up for the distance and the lost time.

But many precious things in life require patience to plan. Once, my family talked about taking a reunion trip to Jeju Island, South Korea just for a couple of days, but it took more than a month to finally set the plan in motion! Everyone was just so busy with his or her lives. However, when my family finally got together, we spent hours and hours talking, eating, and laughing. That is when I realized that love cannot be measured in miles. Family will always be there for you, no matter what.

Has it been a while since you’ve had your mother’s cooking? When was the last time you sat around laughing with your entire family? If the answer is “too long,” the time for action is now. It’s never too late to get together with your family and take a family photo.

News for those in Malaysia: In honor of families spending time together, Samsung is running the Samsung Portraits of Raya contest. Just by sharing your family photos of Raya at www.portraitsofraya.com, you will have the chance to win one of 100 sets of Samsung Family Movie Treats. This contest lasts until August 15, so hurry up and gather with your loved ones.
