Samsung Applies Advanced, Eco-friendly Packaging to the Galaxy Series
Samsung Electronics announced it is developing and expanding applications for eco-friendly packaging to help reduce energy use and support the recycling of unused resources. The company is also pledging its commitment to continuously developing the Galaxy series, applying next generation eco-friendly material.
Eco-friendly Packaging of Galaxy S5
Samsung Electronics’ environment-friendly efforts are well represented in the new Galaxy S5 as it used a 100% recyclable paper for the manual and packaging of it.
Galaxy S5 also has a high efficiency, low-load charger, as well as naturally degrading plastic packaging material and charger cases using recyclable plastic and soy ink without petroleum solvents to prevent soil and marine environment contamination. In addition, 20% of the material consists of waste plastic and recycled plastic with better shock and flame resistance for charger cases. The soy ink used to print its product manual and box improves the print work environment and save annual use of petroleum solvent by 30 tons.
“As smartphones become more popularized, the responsibility of companies on making eco-friendly products is also becoming greater,” said JK Shin, President and Head of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung. “By developing eco-friendly package and applying them to the Galaxy series, we will strengthen our role as an eco-friendly company.”
Samsung has strived to be eco-friendly throughout the Galaxy series
Eco-friendly philosophy and efforts of Samsung Electronics have been maintained throughout the Galaxy Series. For example, the Galaxy S4 reduced approximately 1,000 tons of CO2 emission, equivalent to protecting 110,000 trees, by using 100% recyclable paper packaging material. It also received the ‘IF Design Awards 2014’ in the Packaging category for its “Eco-friendly Mobile Package.”
At European Imaging and Sound Association(EISA)’s ‘2013-2014 EISA Green Award’, Galaxy S4 was chosen as a ‘Green Phone’ for using high-efficiency charger and low power technology, not using harmful substances and applying eco-friendly packaging technology. As such, it has been acknowledged as an eco-friendly product receiving 10 awards in the relevant categories both in and out of Korea.
As a result of Samsung Electronics’ efforts to apply eco-friendly technology, the Galaxy S4 was certified as an eco-friendly product in 6 countries including Korea, United States, United Kingdom and Germany.
Moreover, with the development of high-efficiency and low-load charger, the Galaxy S3 achieved the ‘carbon footprint’ certification from the UK-based Carbon Trust. The Galaxy series acquired eco-friendly certification on 213 cases in 6 countries since 2011.
