Samsung Electronics received seven awards at International Design Excellence Awards(IDEA) 2012, one of the world’s most prestigious design contests, organized by the Industrial Designers Society of America. The IDEA 2012 awards ceremony will be held in Boston, US on August 18, 2012.

The seven awards include four gold awardstwo silver awards and one bronze award in the enterprise category. We covered popular consumer products yesterday, and today we’ll walk you through some of the innovations in Samsung’s digital X-Ray equipment.

Samsung Electronics’ digital X-Ray equipment (XEGO-GU60XGEO-GC80) and digital X-Ray User Interface (UI) received the gold award at IDEA (International Design Excellence Awards) 2012, indicating a bright future for Samsung Electronics’ medical equipment business, which the company is developing as a new, promising business.

Gold – Samsung XGEO UX

The Samsung XGEO UX introduces a simple and intuitive graphical user interface design for both radiographers, the primary users, and patients also, enhancing their holistic experience in hospitals.

The primary challenge was to prioritize key information and streamline it within a limited design space so that the cognitive load of radiographers can be minimized. For example, as information and measures needed to be clearly delivered, designers aimed for high legibility with the use of brightness and contrast. Also, consistency in the graphical user interface between the workstation and the top head unit had to be maintained in order to produce a reliable user experience.

Many design concepts from consumer electronics devices were applied, such as an image preview option and easily accessible help function. Automatic functions, such as auto positioning, auto centering and smart stitching, were designed to minimize user errors.

Gold – Samsung XGEO GU60 and XGEO GC80 (Ceiling Type)

Aside from the UX, GU60 and GC80 both received Gold honors at IDEA 2012. They both feature a 12-inch touch screen that streamlines controls and information across the system while providing complicated information effectively. Also, the swiveling arms are controlled with a handheld wireless LED remote control with embedded sensors so the machine doesn’t hit the patient by accident. Pretty sweet, huh?

Also, real-time monitoring makes it possible to check the images right after their taken. So you can take another quick shot if needed.

The ‘Digital x-Ray (XEGO-GU60)’ is fully motorized, and offers guidance for patient positioning and filming methods, easing the stress on clinicians.

The ‘Digital X-Ray (XGEO-GC80)’ provides a simple color and sound interface. For example, throughout the exam setup and during the exam itself, the components are illuminated, alerting clinician and patients as to the progress of the exam: blue when the components are moving, green for ready mode, orange when the X-rays are being taken and red to indicate an emergency.

Hope you enjoyed the information about our IDEA 2012 Award recipients. We’re looking forward to the ceremony in August, as well as other upcoming design awards. Samsung Electronics has always taken design seriously and strives to provide value to customers through great designs.
