Guided by its vision of “AI for All,” Samsung Electronics continues to develop home appliances that are intuitive and convenient for a wide range of home environments. Among the most impactful advancements are accessibility features designed to make these appliances easier to use for individuals with disabilities and older adults — reflecting the company’s commitment to inclusive design.

Samsung Newsroom sat down with Bona Lee, Vice President and Head of Customer eXperience (CX) Insight Group at Digital Appliances (DA) Business, Samsung Electronics, to discuss the latest accessibility features in Samsung’s home appliances and the philosophy that shapes them.

▲ Bona Lee from Samsung Electronics demonstrates the negative color mode on the Family Hub refrigerator’s display.

Q. What core value or principle guides your approach when designing accessibility features for home appliances?

Using home appliances typically involves a combination of sensory input — such as sight, sound and touch — along with cognitive functions like making selections and adjusting settings, as well as physical actions like pulling, pushing or lifting. These steps can present challenges for some users.

Samsung is working to reduce or eliminate these usability barriers to ensure that everyone can access all features and benefit from the latest technologies. As part of our broader commitment to inclusive design, we offer tailored solutions for different accessibility needs — such as tactile stickers for buttons, audio cues for users with visual impairments and control panels positioned at heights accessible to wheelchair users.

Q. What are some standout accessibility features or services that users might not be aware of?

▲ Visibility enhancement settings on the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo

The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo offers a significantly more streamlined control experience than before. While previous models required users to turn a dial and strain to read small text to select a cycle, the new model features a built-in digital screen with large, easy-to-read fonts. AI further enhances usability by prioritizing frequently used cycles at the top of the menu.

What’s more, SmartThings routines empower individuals with limited mobility by automating device control. A simple voice command like “I’m going to sleep” can turn off lights and appliances, creating a more comfortable and accessible home environment.

Q. What new accessibility features have been introduced in the 2025 Bespoke AI appliance lineup?

In the 2025 lineup of Bespoke AI appliances, Bixby can now recognize individual voices using Voice ID technology and provide accessibility settings tailored to each person. In addition, with built-in microphones and speakers, users can ask Bixby about the appliance’s status and receive key alerts via voice responses.

Moreover, the Auto Open Door feature — highly praised by users with limited mobility — has been expanded to more products, including refrigerators, washing machines, ovens and dishwashers. A light tap or simple voice command like “Open the [device] door” provides easy, hands-free access.

▲ The Auto Open Door feature on the Family Hub refrigerator

Q. Are there any ongoing collaborations focused on enhancing accessibility in home appliances?

Samsung is actively collaborating with various organizations to identify and address real-world accessibility challenges. We receive objective evaluations and expert guidance from various professional organizations including the Korea Center for Accessibility Assessment & Research. Additionally, accessibility features for our screen-equipped appliances — such as voice guidance and improved visibility — are being developed in alignment with the European Accessibility Act that goes into effect this June.

Internal collaboration is just as vital. The Samsung Family Supporters group — comprised of employees with disabilities and those with family members who have disabilities — is actively involved in shaping accessibility initiatives. Furthermore, the newly established Accessibility Employee Resource Group (ERG) within the Device eXperience (DX) Business fosters open dialogue by encouraging members to share real-life experiences and ideas to improve accessibility across our products and services.

Q. What results or improvements have come from these collaborations so far?

While many visually impaired users found voice guidance for operating SmartThings-connected appliances helpful, some reported that the initial device connection process was challenging.

To address this, we improved the SmartThings app and partnered with TUAT Corp. — the developer of AI-powered visual assistance app Sullivan Plus — to introduce a dedicated mode that recognizes Samsung appliances and helps users easily connect them to SmartThings. Selected for Samsung’s C-Lab Outside startup incubator, Sullivan Plus is expected to further enhance the overall user experience.

We’ve also developed assistive tools based on ideas and feedback from employees and the Samsung Family Supporters group. Designs for these tools are shared on ITDA, a public platform for customizing and 3D-printing assistive devices. One example is a stick-on handle for drawers, designed to support users with limited hand mobility. Development continues toward creating more automated assistive solutions that offer even greater convenience.

Q. What steps is Samsung taking to further advance its vision of “AI for All” in the future?

“AI for All” reflects Samsung’s commitment to ensuring that the benefits of technology are seamlessly integrated into everyday life — regardless of a user’s physical abilities or environment. It’s about transforming individual features into connected, inclusive experiences that make life better for everyone.

Looking ahead, Samsung will continue to embed universal design principles that prioritize inclusivity into product development. This includes gathering input from diverse user groups during the planning stage, leveraging user data to identify new opportunities and collaborating with both internal and external experts and organizations to create more meaningful solutions.

As AI capabilities in home appliances evolve, the goal is to create a truly intelligent in-home experience — one that understands each user, their family and their environment by automating tasks and reducing the need for manual input. Rather than addressing diversity with isolated features, Samsung strives to deliver integrated, all-in-one solutions that adapt to any situation.

We see this as the future of innovation — where accessibility and technology come together to serve everyone, under the vision of “Universal Accessibility, Universal Technology.”

Samsung Electronics today announced it is showcasing its comprehensive lineup of innovative home appliances — including the new Induction Range from Dacor — at the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) 2025 in Las Vegas. Following on from its “AI for All” vision laid out at CES 2025 in January, Samsung is continuing to build out a suite of user-focused, AI-enhanced solutions providing truly personalized services for living spaces — all based on the foundation of constantly improving solutions like Samsung Knox, Bixby and SmartThings.

The exhibition showcases Bespoke AI appliances — namely the Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+, the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo and the Bespoke Slide-in Induction Range — which are great additions to any smart home ecosystem. The LCD screens on these appliances act as a hub, allowing easy and intuitive access and control across various intelligent, connected devices. Visitors can experience how implementation of AI can deliver a personalized experience and make daily routines better and more enjoyable.

Additionally, the exhibition provides information on AI Energy Mode in SmartThings Energy1 and Samsung Care, both of which support Samsung’s commitment to making users’ daily lives more convenient.

Samsung’s KBIS booth also has a dedicated space with built-in appliances from Dacor, including the 2025 Dacor Induction Range. Designed for a premium kitchen, Dacor’s 30” Column Refrigerator – Panel Ready; 30” Column Freezer – Panel Ready; 30” Combination Wall Oven with Steam; and 24” Built-in Wine Dispenser form a seamless wall to bring a clean and luxurious look to the home interior. A separate wine zone also showcases the 24” Wine Column – Panel Ready that continues into an impressive Dacor Wine Wall where visitors can take photos.

“We are looking forward to introducing our Samsung Bespoke and Dacor appliances, all of which harness powerful hyperconnectivity and AI technology to anticipate personal needs and simplify daily tasks,” said Taehwan Hwang, EVP and Head of the Sales and Marketing Team of Digital Appliances (DA) Business at Samsung Electronics. “And as the premier stage for home innovation, KBIS is the perfect place for us to showcase how these smart, beautifully designed appliances work together to create seamless and personalized experiences for every household.”

Introducing the 2025 Dacor Induction Range: A Powerful Enhancement to Any Kitchen

The 2025 Dacor Induction Range empowers users to quickly and flexibly cook a variety of dishes. The powerful heat of a 4.3 kW Induction Cooktop enables fast and intensive cooking that seals in delicious flavors, making it ideal for sautéing, searing or quickly boiling. The cooktop’s Anti Scratch Glass makes surface cleaning and maintenance super easy, and the matte black finish adds a premium look to the kitchen.

There’s also a 7” Sync Burner that allows users to adjust two separate burners with one control so they can be kept at the same temperature and act as one large cooking zone for large cookware. Since this model is ENERGY STAR® certified, all the power that comes with it doesn’t come at the cost of efficiency, either.

Additionally, Dacor’s Dual Four-part Pure Convection system cooks multiple dishes quickly and thoroughly with no flavor transfer, reducing cooking time by distributing heat evenly across the entire oven. The four key components are as follows:

a 1300 W heating element to provide heat

a convection fan to circulate air

an oven-specific baffle to evenly channel air

a triple-mesh filter to prevent flavor crossover

Users will also benefit from the luxurious Art Hairline Finish, which features long, horizontal brush strokes on the stainless-steel exterior to contribute to a sophisticated matte appearance that blends harmoniously with kitchen interiors.

In-Booth Events

Visitors to Samsung’s booth at KBIS will be able to use a buzzworthy photo booth that allows them to take a photo of a miniaturized version of themselves sitting on the shelf of the larger-than-life refrigerator — and then instantly share it on social media.

1 AI Energy Mode must be turned on in the SmartThings App, available on Android and iOS devices. A Wi-Fi connection and a Samsung account are required.

Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman, CEO and Head of Samsung’s Device eXperience (DX) Division, opened Samsung’s CES 2025 press conference by introducing the company’s roadmap for Home AI, a plan for redefining the meaning of home by providing truly personalized services across all intelligent, connected devices.
“I’m proud of how we have introduced new technologies and intelligence to the home, connected key devices and set the standard for the home of the future,” Vice Chairman Han said. “This year at CES, we are reinforcing our commitment to delivering personalized experiences through our widespread implementation of AI and we will continue this journey of AI leadership in the home and beyond, not just for the next decade, but for the next century.”

Samsung recognizes that as users introduce more connected devices into their homes and AI becomes more personal, it must also protect users’ privacy. To meet these evolving needs, the company has extended its security capabilities. Now, Samsung Knox Matrix protects home appliances along with mobile devices and TVs with its signature blockchain technology, ensuring that connected devices are working together to protect the user’s home, data and each other from digital threats. With Knox Matrix Dashboard, a transparent privacy control, Samsung offers simplified security management across the entire connected home. As information syncs across devices, Knox Matrix’s Credential Sync ensures that data can only be encrypted or decrypted from the user’s devices, and Samsung Knox Vault adds another layer of protection, keeping sensitive information like passwords or PINs isolated in a secure location.

Samsung’s One UI provides an integrated software experience across all connected Samsung devices, enhancing interoperability, empowering users with AI-based features and providing software updates for up to seven years.

Underpinning it all is SmartThings, Samsung’s smart home platform that brings intelligent connectivity to hundreds of millions of users around the world. With Samsung’s belief in open innovation and partnership as a foundation, SmartThings is being equipped with the latest AI technology to streamline and personalize the smart home experience for complete convenience. SmartThings Ambient Sensing intuitively understands the user’s environment and situational context by analyzing even human movements and ambient sounds through connected devices within the home, thereby enabling those devices to intelligently and seamlessly respond and adapt to daily routines.

Bixby Voice, an enhanced AI voice assistant, will be integrated to increase usability. The assistant has been trained so that it can recognize individual voices and respond to commands in a way that works best for each user.

Another way SmartThings simplifies everyday life is with Flex Connect, Samsung’s energy demand response program which incentivizes customers to enroll their devices with SmartThings and use SmartThings Energy. Users can decrease strain on local electricity grids and receive rewards in the form of Samsung Rewards points. In 2025, the program will be expanded from New York and California to select regions in Texas, helping address critical grid needs in the state.

These Home AI updates free up time previously spent on home management, allowing users to focus on what matters most and explore new passions. Samsung’s new Galaxy Book5 Pro and Galaxy Book5 360 are AI PCs built to boost productivity with Intel® Core Ultra Processors (Series 2) and enhance creativity with features like AI Select and Samsung Studio. AI Select works to make browsing a breeze, while Samsung Studio lets users edit across their Galaxy smartphone, tablet or PC wherever inspiration strikes, at home or on the go. Powered by the NPU, Photo Remaster upscales low-resolution photos into high-quality visuals, while Storage Share lets users directly access the files on their smartphone from their PC, avoiding the process of downloading.

With productivity comes proactivity, too. When AI and Samsung Health combine, users are empowered to take control of their health and wellness. With AI-driven health insights gathered on the Galaxy Ring and Galaxy Watch, Samsung is helping users make sense of their data and arrive at more informed decisions about their well-being. These new capabilities will further improve the overall experience of Samsung Health, which stands apart as an end-to-end health solution that integrates the entire home seamlessly.

Seamless Entertainment in the AI Era

Samsung’s latest screen experiences, powered by Samsung Vision AI, bring unexpected joy to users’ days through unparalleled personalization and exciting new features. The AI Screen experience infuses intelligence into TVs, bringing Generative Wallpaper, Live Translate and Click to Search to users. At the forefront of this technology is the Neo QLED 8K, which provides the most advanced viewing experiences though AI features like 8K AI Upscaling Pro, Auto HDR Remastering Pro and Color Booster Pro — all of which work behind the scenes to intelligently enhance picture quality. Plus, The Frame’s art experience is expanding, allowing all Samsung QLEDs to come with a digital collection of over 3,000 art pieces, making it so that they can turn any room into a personal gallery.

Samsung’s commitment to its Screens Everywhere strategy is reflected in new display options for its appliances, including its new refrigerators with 9″ AI Home displays and other devices with 7″ screens. Consumers will be able to enjoy heightened functionality — including various entertainment services, AI features such as AI Vision Inside and direct access to the online grocery service Instacart — on a broader range of products.

Taking AI Everywhere

Beyond the home, Samsung’s AI innovations are set to transform new categories and industries with SmartThings Pro. Created to bring the same AI-powered digital solutions to business partners as SmartThings offers consumers, SmartThings Pro is a B2B solution spanning multi-residential homes to retail spaces, hotels, schools and more. Since its launch last June, SmartThings Pro provides businesses with integrations to better understand energy usage, proactively identify devices with maintenance needs and offer comprehensive control of connected solutions. Samsung is working with partners to create an innovative platform, Future Innovation Technology (FIT), for larger businesses and buildings to set automated climate controls that save energy and reduce electricity costs.

The company is also working with Samsung Heavy Industries on a new SmartThings collaboration that uses the Matter connectivity standard to connect with compatible ships. SmartThings for Ships offers a Pre-Sailing Mode, which allows captains and crews to automate when the engine starts and turn on settings for temperature and lights, saving time and energy. Meanwhile, Care Mode provides a complete view of a ship’s power, AC systems and smoke alarms, while Protection Mode constantly monitors for — and will alert captain and crew to — any abnormal activity.

Additionally, Samsung is expanding its SmartThings and automotive integrations in a new partnership with Hyundai Motor Group to bring SmartThings to Hyundai EVs. With the expanded ecosystem, users can now use SmartThings Find to easily locate their parked car, even in crowded parking lots. With the power of Home AI, SmartThings can make recommendations on when to recharge EVs based on schedules and rates. And if there is a neighborhood power outage, it will automatically activate Battery Backup Mode, which works alongside AI Energy Mode to extend the battery energy to power home essentials.

In the Automotive space, Samsung and its subsidiary Harman continue their promise to transform the in-car experience with new products that bring contextual awareness into the cabin. Leveraging Samsung’s expertise in UX and AI, HARMAN’s new in-vehicle avatar acts as an intelligent digital copilot that works with Harman products like Ready Care and Ready Vision to anticipate needs while drivers focus on the road.

Empowering the Next Generation

Finally, Inhee Chung, Vice President of the Corporate Sustainability Center, underscored how Samsung’s AI for All vision is rooted in the brand’s commitment to harness the power of advanced technology for a better, more inclusive world. Samsung is introducing diverse and enhanced accessibility features through its AI-powered devices and services, starting with the ability to automatically sync accessibility features across home appliances from a smartphone.

From the first half of this year, Bixby will automatically have connected devices display text in high contrast or provide a voice guide for family members with low vision, all by simply recognizing their voice. For those with low vision, AI is improving Audio Subtitles by lowering foreign language audio and reading out the subtitles in the language of the user’s choosing.

Chung also discussed how initiatives like Samsung Solve for Tomorrow, Samsung Innovation Campus and the company’s work with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are enabling the next generation of innovators. Today, Samsung Solve for Tomorrow challenges more than 2.6 million students across 66 countries to use STEM to address challenges in their community. In particular, during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games last year, Samsung and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) launched a digital community “Together for Tomorrow, Enabling People” and appointed top 10 teams from global Solve for Tomorrow as community ambassadors. Meanwhile, Samsung Innovation Campus has helped prepare nearly 180,000 young people across 33 countries for the workforce through training on emerging technologies like AI, IoT and big data.

In a video message, Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator, joined VP Chung to share an update on Samsung and UNDP’s partnership to harness the power of technology for good. Since its initiation five years ago, the Samsung Global Goals app has raised over $20 million thanks to nearly 300 million users who are using a Galaxy smartphone, tablet or watch. Plus, Samsung and UNDP’s joint work through the Generation17 initiative continues to inspire extraordinary young leaders around the world who are mobilizing their communities to advance the Global Goals.

Samsung Electronics today held its annual Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center. Celebrating a decade of collaboration and innovation with developers, the company shared its vision for providing a more personalized and secure experience with the latest multi-device AI technology in the spirit of “AI for All.”

With about 3,000 developers, partners and media in attendance, Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman, CEO and Head of Device eXperience (DX) Division at Samsung Electronics said, “We have continued our journey of innovation with our many developers and partners for the last ten years,” highlighting the importance of open collaboration to strengthen both competitiveness and mutual growth in today’s AI era.

JH shared further detail surrounding the company’s commitment to using AI technology to offer stronger security, advanced personalization, better family care experiences and new opportunities for B2B businesses. “Samsung Electronics will continue advancing AI technology to a level where AI automatically recognizes each user individually — from their voice to their location — to provide a more personalized experience,” he explained. “These efforts will create more convenient and secure multi-device experiences by leveraging Samsung’s AI-based software, platform innovation and security technology.”

In addition, the company announced that it will integrate the software experience of its major product lines — from mobile devices to TVs and home appliances — under the name One UI next year. By providing a cohesive product experience and committing to software upgrades for up to seven years, Samsung will continue to bring innovation for its customers.

To realize its AI for All vision, Samsung will also create AI for good, empowering innovators to leverage new technologies to break new ground, address societal challenges head-on and create a better world for future generations.

Samsung Reiterates AI for All Innovation

At SDC24, the company reiterated its commitment to use AI technology to open possibilities, protect personal information and enhance the daily lives of all who use it. Building on over a decade of investment into advanced intelligence technologies, Samsung shared how its commitment to AI for All is guiding the company’s research and innovation roadmap for developers and customers alike.

Inspired by the need to create AI rooted in personalization for every individual, Samsung’s AI is made for all; it’s for families who want to make managing their evening routines easier, homeowners who are getting used to new spaces, and creators and innovators exploring cutting-edge technologies for inspiration. Samsung is providing AI for All without compromising privacy by leveraging on-device AI capabilities, while continuing to offer game-changing performance through cloud and generative AI.

Samsung is also committed to developing AI to better our world, as all employees uphold the global AI ethics principles of “Fairness,” “Transparency” and “Accountability” for both developing and using AI.

The AI for All strategy will more closely integrate Galaxy AI on mobile devices to enhance productivity, creativity and communication; Bespoke AI appliances to simplify users’ daily life; AI-powered displays on Samsung smart TVs with Tizen; and cross-platform AI enhancements coming to Bixby, SmartThings and One UI 7.

A Sneak Peek at One UI 7

One UI has always been designed to bring users the most personalized, creative and productive experiences possible on mobile devices. Samsung previewed a sneak peek of One UI 7 at SDC24, highlighting its new UX focused on simple, impactful and emotive design alongside more ways to seamlessly integrate Galaxy AI features into daily activities. One UI 7 beta will be available to developers before the end of this year.

The AI Home Comes to Life

Samsung’s Bespoke AI appliances are bringing better experiences to the entire household, from the kitchen to the living room. With AI Vision Inside1 in the refrigerator with AI Family Hub or AI-applied features like AI Floor Detect in the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI, Samsung’s smart home appliances leverage the best of AI technology to make lives better, simpler and easier than ever.

That capability grows even stronger with the AI-upgraded Bixby.2 Users can control their entire smart home from anywhere within earshot of a Bixby-enabled appliance. Bixby also provides accessibility benefits for users. For increased accessibility at home, it can open appliance doors with a simple call, without wake-up commands3 thanks to the Auto Open Door.

Bixby’s enhanced capabilities extend to Samsung smart TVs, as well. Users can now search for content using only descriptive details and customizing settings with multiple commands, thanks to Bixby. Inspired by a continued commitment to simplifying the lives of everyday users, the mobile remote control feature enables users to control their TV from their phone and Samsung AI Cast can send AI-generated results from mobile devices to the TV. Available from the TV home screen, users can enjoy images and content lists developed with generative AI, including an integration with ChatGPT, now on a bigger display.

Samsung is integrating AI across its visual display applications too, from AI Upscaling and AI Customization on smart TVs to offering a new Daily Board Software Development Kit (SDK) for developers to turn any smart TV screen into a one-stop-shop for daily information like weather, device health and local updates through a new partnership with Nextdoor.

Next-Generation Signage Solutions With VXT

Samsung also showcased the next generation of signage solutions with Visual Experience Transformation (VXT), its software platform and accompanying content management solution (CMS) for content production, operation and management. By using an AI-powered chatbot with the Pre-Integrated Repeatable Solution (PIRS) & Widget aNd Extension (WiNE) Framework, VXT offers efficient, streamlined signage solutions and allows developers to seamlessly integrate solutions and simplify processes on the platform.

Tizen Leverages On-Device AI for World-Class Performance

Samsung’s major OS Tizen is bringing its industry-leading experience to more devices and services, as Samsung has equipped certain AI-enabled home appliances with the AI Home,4 a 7-inch LCD touchscreen display.

Tizen is also getting a boost with Tizen AI services. Powered by the Samsung Neural Processing Unit (NPU) and optimized to suit Samsung products and respond to user needs, Tizen AI services will provide smarter, safer and more personalized experiences, from controlling echo and noise levels while watching TV or making video calls to analyzing users’ writing styles to improve notetaking.

Samsung’s commitment to enhancing experiences with AI is also reflected by stronger interoperability between Tizen and the Galaxy ecosystem. Multi-Control, which enables users to navigate and control both their smartphone and tablet using the same Bluetooth tools including mice and keyboards, will extend to smart monitors and TVs with Tizen.

Samsung has developed Tizen based on RISC-V5 for developers, and a new SDK for Tizen applications designed with RISC-V will be available in 2026.

Tizen also supports the latest version of Flutter, the cross-platform development framework, and will continue providing extension tools for app developers for a greater level of debugging and profiling.

SmartThings Takes New Leap Forward With AI and Expands to Health Experience

Over the past decade, Samsung SmartThings has grown into one of the largest connected platforms with more than 350 million subscribers and over 340 “Works with SmartThings” (WWST) partners.

Samsung is using advanced AI technology to unlock higher-level SmartThings experiences and explore a wider range of partnerships. SmartThings will play a key role as the groundbreaking technology that sets the company’s products and services apart.

One of the major updates coming to SmartThings this month is Home Insight,6 which analyzes user data, usage patterns, device history and home stats collected in real time to offer a better home experience. It also recommends features to optimize the home, such as powering off idle devices while away during a specific time of day or season. Plus, the Galaxy Tab S10 is equipped with the Home Insight Widget, so it can be conveniently used as a home dashboard to monitor and control the house.

Samsung also introduced its plan to have all its products with screens run the SmartThings Hub. This will make Samsung devices better at working together to take care of the home, and even includes connectivity with partner devices. The plan includes adding Edge AI7 technology based on the SmartThings Hub, which embeds AI capabilities in the home’s connected devices, contributing to the vision of a truly AI-enhanced home.

In the spirit of open collaboration and innovation, Samsung shared the details of its latest SmartThings partnerships. This included a new partnership with various smart key developers, including Schlage8 and Aqara,9 which will add the SmartThings Door Lock function to the Digital Home Key inside Samsung Wallet in 2025.

Sustainability was also highlighted, particularly a partnership between SmartThings and Kohler.10 Kohler’s Chief Sustainable Living Officer (U.S.) Laura Kohler joined Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings, onstage to share how the new integration will help users monitor and reduce water usage with smart showerheads and faucets.

Tobin Richardson, Head of the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), virtually announced that Samsung SmartThings was the first service to adopt the Matter11 1.3 standard, playing a crucial role in the continued support and expansion of the Matter ecosystem.

Samsung also introduced a closer integration between SmartThings and Samsung Health. Girish Naganathan, CTO of the continuous glucose monitoring system (CGM) company Dexcom,12 joined Samsung onstage to discuss the companies’ shared vision of more personalized, convenient health management at home, for both users and their loved ones.

Security as the Foundation for the AI Era

Finally, Samsung continued to highlight its commitment to robust security and privacy standards. With Samsung Knox, the company is continuing to invest in strengthening its security governance to ensure that the latest AI experiences never require the sacrificing of personal data. The blockchain-based, multi-device security solution Knox Matrix will expand from mobile devices to TVs and home appliances to further enhance security across multi-device experiences.

Samsung also highlighted the expansion of Passkey, which will come to Tizen beginning with 2025 TV models, the refrigerator with AI Family Hub and home appliances with AI Home. Passkey will bring greater convenience and security to users, while also supporting web browser-based logins through mobile QR code scanning.

Each of these features has a major role to play in keeping users more secure, developers supported, and devices offering the latest and greatest AI-powered innovations to make the most of our new AI era.

Samsung invites developers, creators and partners, among others, to join in its commitment to open innovation and better experiences enabled by connectivity.
“Since our presentation at IFA last year, discussions around AI and its role in our lives have grown significantly,” said Benjamin Braun, Chief Marketing Officer, Samsung Europe. “At Samsung, we are proud to make AI more accessible and understandable, showing how it can simplify life rather than complicate it. We believe AI should act like multiple pairs of helping hands, meeting you needs and the world beyond them. Our AI-enabled products allow people more time to focus on the things they care about.”

AI For All

Samsung’s AI for All spans a wide range of its AI enabled products, from mobile devices, home appliances and home entertainment systems. By the end of 2024, Samsung expects there will be 200 million Galaxy AI-enabled devices in users’ hands. Samsung understands its AI features need to adapt to how consumers want to live — as well as supporting the needs of the earth.

Central to this is the expanding SmartThings ecosystem, which connects over 500 million devices, offering seamless remote control of all Samsung AI-enabled products, from turning the heating on or off, managing all appliances when home or away and navigating Samsung TVs.

Never before has it been so easy for people across the world to use of the power of AI to take control of the world around them. Samsung AI enable products give this power to its users, allowing them to curate their everyday experiences. Whether striving for more sustainable living, expanding creativity or connecting with their loved ones.

However, only 15% of people said they have a full understanding of how AI can be used in their daily lives and yet 66% of us are looking for ways to create more time. This shows a clear opportunity for Samsung AI to give back to people, and why AI is for All.1

Launching following IFA, the latest operating system upgrade, One UI 6.1.1, will make AI features from the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6, such as Live Translate and Circle To Search, available on the Galaxy S24, Z Fold5 and Flip5.

This rollout of One UI 6.1.1 will also include brand new apps which bring more opportunity for creativity and connection. Including, Sketch to Image, which allows users to visualise their ideas through image options generated from a simple drawing and Portrait Studio which propels creativity by helping users create a more personalised avatar to use online.

▲ Deborah Honig, Chief Customer Officer and VP of One Samsung, speaking about SmartThings at Samsung’s IFA 2024 presentation, where the company unveils its latest innovations and celebrates the possibilities AI can create for everyone.

AI Meets You

Samsung believes that its AI should enhance daily life by allowing users to personalise entertainment experiences. At IFA 2024, Samsung launched the Premiere 7 and 9 Projectors, Galaxy Book5 Pro 360 and Galaxy Book4 Edge 15-inch, all designed to help users focus on what they care about and who they share it with.

The Premiere 9 and The Premiere 7 projectors, bring advanced laser technology to home entertainment, delivering exceptional 4K resolution and immersive audio on screens up to 130 inches. They include AI-powered technology, including Upscaling, which enhances content to 4K quality, and Vision Booster, which adjusts brightness and contrast for optimal viewing in various lighting conditions. Designed to transform living spaces into premium home cinemas, these projectors offer a superior viewing experience with cutting-edge technology.

▲ Stephanie Chosen, Samsung Brand and Product Marketing Manager, speaking about The Frame and The Art Store’s collaboration with Jean-Michel Basquiat at Samsung’s IFA 2024 presentation, where the company unveils its latest innovations and celebrates the possibilities AI can create for everyone.

The Galaxy Book5 Pro 360, in collaboration with Intel, combines the power of the new Intel® Core Ultra processor with Samsung’s mobile leadership to unlock the next level of cross-device AI experiences. Featuring Galaxy AI, it offers personalised productivity and seamless connectivity. With all-day battery life, users can accomplish more efficiently, while its enhanced graphics and displays provide a premium entertainment experience within Galaxy’s extensive mobile AI ecosystem.

The ultra-thin Galaxy Book4 Edge 15-inch, designed with Qualcomm, is powered by the Snapdragon® X Plus processor for exceptional performance and long battery life. It integrates advanced NPU technology for top-tier AI capabilities and combines Copilot+ PC features with Galaxy AI. This portable device enhances creativity and connectivity on a vibrant 15-inch display.

Also showcased on stage at IFA were the latest innovations in Samsung TVs. Since 2015, Tizen OS has powered hundreds of millions of smart TVs, leading the evolution of television viewing. 2024 Samsung AI TVs will receive Tizen OS upgrades for seven years considering hardware specification.2 This ensures that consumers can continue to enjoy the latest innovations and enhanced connectivity across all their Samsung devices.

Samsung’s Neo QLED 8K AI screens provide an enhanced viewing experience with built-in NQ 8 AI Gen 3 processors. These processors feature 512 neural networks — eight times more than before—and, when combined with the power of AI, deliver a customised, high-quality sound and picture experience. This technology upscales on-screen content to deliver the sharpest and smoothest picture yet.

The latest developments in The Frame and Art Store were also celebrated at IFA with the announcement of several new partnerships. Along with collaborations with Finnish design house Marimekko and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Samsung introduced an exclusive collection of 12 masterpieces by Belgian surrealist René Magritte. These partnerships enable users to bring extraordinary art into their homes, adding a touch of magic to their everyday surroundings.

Samsung also announced the exciting launch of the new Samsung Music Frame in partnership with Universal Picture’s Wicked. The Music Frame wireless speaker was launched earlier this year, delivering superior sound quality that fills any space with rich, clear audio. With built-in woofers and intelligent Dolby Atmos technology inside, the Music Frame intelligently adapts to your home acoustics and brings every sound and note to life. The limited-edition Wicked Music Frame comes with two movie art images and one wonderful exclusive image (only available as part of the limited-edition Music Frame) of the beloved Glinda and Elphaba, along with character autographs and an authenticity certificate.

Samsung is creating simple user experiences through its Bespoke AI appliances,3 which now offer enhanced voice control through Bixby upgrades. The upgraded Bixby can understand multiple commands in one sentence, recall previous context4 to carry out continuous commands for personalised responses and provide answers to product related questions.5 It allows users to express their needs more naturally and easily than before.

Samsung also opens up greater control and accessibility benefits for users. For example, Samsung developed and applied an Auto Open Door feature on some washing machine and refrigerator models so users can open doors with a light touch. A recent update allows people to open the door by simply saying, “Open the refrigerator door”, even without wake-up commands like “Hi Bixby”.

AI Meets World

Samsung believes that AI is a force for good and one which has a critical role to play in allowing us all to take better care of the planet and each other.

Samsung has continued its mission to become Net Zero by 2050, with 93% of its DX Division operations running on to Renewable Energy sources.6

Within its products, Samsung continues to prioritise energy efficiency and is passionate about using AI to make this possible. Whether that’s AI inside appliances such as its refrigerators and washing machines or using AI to unlock the potential of its SmartThings Eco System to save more energy.

Samsung’s AI Hybrid refrigerators have been built with energy saving front of mind. By combining two power sources, a compressor and Peltier cooling technology, the fridge intelligently responds when more energy than usual is being used. For example, if the fridge door is left open for longer, the Peltier technology works as an extra cooling source to improve overall energy efficiency.

On stage at IFA, Samsung revealed that the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo is now rolling out across Europe. The All-in-One washer and dryer combo is a single space efficient appliance that finishes the wash and dry cycle in one queue. The wash cycle not only meets but surpasses the minimum energy efficiency requirements for the A-grade rating by up to 20%,7 and the wash and dry cycle combined also meets the A-grade rating.8 This impressive performance is achieved through advanced heat pump drying technology, which dries clothes quickly, gently and efficiently at lower temperatures.

▲ Katharina Mayer, Samsung Head of LifeStyle Lab Europe – Digital Appliances, speaking about the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo at Samsung’s IFA 2024 presentation, where the company unveils its latest innovations and celebrates the possibilities AI can create for everyone.

The SmartThings Ecosystem remains at the core of Samsung’s ability to pioneer energy efficiency, as it can make lots of small changes to make a big difference. The AI Energy Mode in SmartThings Energy9 can save up to 70% of energy consumption for washing machines.10 11 Also with SmartThings Away Mode users never have to worry about forgetting to turn off a light or the TV when they go out. Sensors in various appliances sense when there is no-one in the room and then shut down systems to save energy.

Bespoke AI appliances can also save energy costs through Optimal Scheduling and Optimal Charging. These features delay the start of a wash cycle and charging to avoid peak hours in order to reduce energy costs when combined with smart tariffs.

In honor of Global Accessibility Awareness Day on May 16, Samsung Newsroom has outlined the accessibility features of Bespoke AI appliances that allow easy and convenient use for all.

Designed With Mobility in Mind

Both Samsung’s Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub and Bespoke AI Laundry Combo feature Auto Open Door — a function that helps users open the doors of these appliances. Refrigerator doors will open with a light touch, and laundry machine doors will open when turned on or when a cycle is complete. This function makes appliance use much easier for people who may struggle with opening doors such as the elderly or those in wheelchairs.

▲ Bespoke AI Laundry Combo with Auto Open Door

Full Control Through Audio and Voice

Bixby’s1 voice command feature allows users to control devices around the home using only their voice, relieving the burden of device operation for people with low vision. Through voice commands, Bespoke WindFree Air Conditioner stand models can control other home appliances — such as refrigerators and washing machines — once connected to SmartThings.

Devices that offer Voice assistant audibly read user commands and the status of each appliance. Included on select Samsung air conditioners and robot vacuum cleaners, this feature will be expanded via a software update to the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo and other products equipped with AI Home — a 7-inch LCD touchscreen panel that helps control home appliances.

Accessible sounds — available on select refrigerator models for people with low vision — provide audio feedback in a series of distinct sounds with varying scales and syllable breaks, allowing users to better navigate operation controls. Samsung is now expanding this feature to Bespoke AI refrigerators and other products, so users can easily adjust the temperature of the refrigerator and freezer compartments.

▲ A usage example of Samsung Bixby’s voice command feature

Created for All Ages

Samsung is expanding its Senior Care feature to more appliances via AI Home to enhance readability through larger fonts.

Additionally, select induction cooktops feature Child Lock — a function that disables cooktop control to prevent accidental operation by children or pets. The lock can be controlled remotely on the SmartThings app.

Samsung plans to accelerate its development of accessibility technology under the slogan “AI for All” so that convenience in daily life can be enjoyed by everyone.

※ Availability of the features and functions mentioned above may vary by country and region, for applicable models only.

※ When connecting to the SmartThings is required: Users must download the SmartThings app available on Android and iOS devices. A Wi-Fi connection and a Samsung account are required.

1 Bixby recognizes select languages and certain accents/dialects. The user interface may change and differ by device. The availability of Bixby features and content providers may vary depending on the country/carrier/language/device model/OS version. A Samsung account log-in and an internet connection (Wi-Fi or data network) are required.

The Journey Toward a Sustainable Future

In 2022, Samsung announced its new environmental strategy in response to climate change and the need for increased resource circularity. As part of this, Samsung outlined a timeline of sustainability milestones the company aims to hit over the next two decades — beginning with the announcement of its strategy to its company-wide net zero carbon emission target for 2050.

Samsung Electronics today shared its vision for how artificial intelligence (AI) technology will enable people to experience their devices more intuitively and conveniently than ever before. Presenting these ideas at a press conference at CES® 2024, Samsung teamed up with key partners to outline the technology behind this vision and how new products and services use AI capabilities to make life easier.

Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman, CEO and Head of Samsung’s Device eXperience (DX) Division, opened the press conference by describing how AI will enable connected technologies to improve people’s daily lives while always remaining nonintrusive and “in the background.” The strategy that he and others outlined focused on the role of AI in enhancing connected experiences that are both simple and useful. Throughout the press conference, Samsung presented a number of products and services that help achieve these aims.

“With the emergence of artificial intelligence, smarter, better experiences will redefine how we live,” Han said. “Samsung’s broad portfolio of powerful devices, along with the pursuit of open collaboration, will help bring AI and hyper-connectivity to all.”

AI-Enabled Visual Display Products and Digital Appliances Bring New Experiences to the Home

During the CES press conference, Jonathan Gabrio, Head of Connected Experience Center at Samsung Electronics America, outlined the ways in which AI technology is transforming how Visual Display products and Digital Appliances are used. For example, Samsung Neo QLED 8K QN900D boasts a built-in AI Processor, NQ8 AI Gen 3, equipped with an 8 times greater AI neural network and a two times faster NPU than its predecessor. Thanks to the NQ8 AI Gen3 processor, Samsung Neo QLED 8K automatically upscales low-resolution content to provide users with up to 8K quality viewing experience and sharpens fast-moving images via AI Motion Enhancer Pro. The Samsung Neo QLED 8K also features Active Voice Amplifier Pro, which analyzes voice and background noise by AI to optimize your TV listening experience so you can enjoy various content as if you are in the front row of a stadium or movie theater. Samsung Neo QLED 8K also features Tizen OS Home, which offers the latest apps, services, personalized content, and service recommendations to upscale your entertainment experience.

As for viewers with different needs, Samsung also provides innovative accessibility features. A sign language feature in Samsung Neo QLED can be easily controlled with gestures for the hearing impaired, and an Audio Subtitle feature turns text subtitles into spoken words in real-time for those with low vision.

Furthermore, Samsung is introducing the new The Premiere 8K, a projector that features not only a 150-inch display, but also the world’s first wireless 8K transmission for a projector. With The Premiere 8K, users will be able to enjoy a full-scale viewing experience like that of the cinema in the comfort of their own homes.

As for sound, Samsung also introduced Music Frame, a speaker with a customizable cover that integrates seamlessly into users’ homes. Via Q-Symphony, the Music Frame syncs with Samsung TVs and soundbars, bringing enriched bass and surround sound of dual built-in woofers to the home with minimal effort.

Samsung has also made major upgrades to Ballie, the rolling AI robot first introduced at CES 2020. Ballie has now evolved into your AI companion capable of interacting with other smart devices to provide customized services such as taking care of bothersome tasks or projecting images and videos on walls so that users can view key information for their daily lives such as weather or other relevant content wherever they are.

To enhance kitchen and food experiences, Samsung is unveiling the Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+1 2. This refrigerator boasts a 32-inch screen that features the new AI Vision Inside3, which uses an internal camera to recognize up to 33 different food items that are put into and taken out of the refrigerator and suggests recipes using those ingredients. Users can also set “use by dates” on the Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub screen for food items, which then allows the refrigerator to send a notification when the set date draws near. By conveniently helping to save money by reducing food waste, these AI features enable more environmentally conscious lifestyles. The Anyplace Induction range takes AI connectivity a step further, as recipes saved on Samsung Food can be shared to the cooktop’s 7-inch display so that users can easily follow along while cooking.

Samsung’s AI technology extends to appliances beyond the kitchen, as well. The new Bespoke AI Laundry Combo — an All-in-One washer and dryer — features the AI Hub4, which is a 7-inch LCD display that acts as an intuitive control center for managing laundry, allowing users to enjoy a simple washing and drying experience. It personalizes washing and drying by remembering users’ habits and using machine learning to suggest cycles. Meanwhile, Samsung’s upcoming vacuum and mop robot cleaner, the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo5, utilizes AI technology to provide a more convenient, effective cleaning experience. With AI Object Recognition upgraded from the previous robot cleaner lineup, it will be able to distinguish more objects, as well as detect stains and spaces6. The Bespoke Jet Bot Combo also recognizes the type of floor it encounters — along with carpet length — and adjusts its settings accordingly.

Samsung Reveals Galaxy Book4 as Company’s Most AI-Ready Laptop Series Yet

Samsung has been elevating what a PC can do and has been collaborating with Microsoft to create new, seamless connected experiences. Now, these experiences are being advanced further with new connectivity features that make the Galaxy Book4 series smoother, smarter, and more adaptable, reinforcing Samsung and Microsoft’s commitment to providing the best PC experience possible.

Using intelligent, intuitive AI capabilities, Microsoft Copilot7 connects the Galaxy Book4 series with Samsung Galaxy smartphone to make them work seamlessly together, so that it feels like just one device. Microsoft Copilot can find, read or summarize text messages from a user’s Galaxy smartphone and even automatically create and send messages on a user’s behalf directly from the PC. Without having to turn on the smartphone and open each individual app, the Galaxy Book4 series can access smartphone functions and information more quickly and intelligently.

The Galaxy Book4 series can now turn Samsung Galaxy smartphones’ powerful camera into a PC webcam8, using it for video calls on virtual conferencing apps. Users can switch freely between front and rear cameras with just a click on their PC, and it also offers a variety of features from Galaxy smartphones – including Background Blur and Auto-framing – that help focus on the speaker’s image in any environment.

Through tight, ongoing collaboration between Samsung and Microsoft, more intelligent capabilities will continue to be made possible on the Galaxy Book4 series, with the above connectivity features being available starting from March.

Plus, the Galaxy Book4 series can be paired with other Galaxy devices beyond smartphones. Tab S9 Ultra can be used as an additional PC monitor, and users can enjoy crystal-clear sound quality with reduced latency when the PC is connected with Galaxy Buds2 Pro. With all these capabilities and more, the Galaxy Book4 series is designed to deliver the best PC experience possible.

Better Connecting Users and Devices through Spatial Intelligence

Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings, highlighted the exciting new ways in which AI technology is impacting the relationship between users and their devices, including Samsung’s vision for SmartThings: The more Samsung devices a customer uses, the smarter those devices become and the better they can understand and support daily life.

Spatial AI is the key to enabling this vision, by helping devices understand the living space and routines of the user, thus enabling more a personalized home management experience. SmartThings uses LiDAR9 on connected devices like robot vacuums to create digital floor plans so users can easily check the status and location of all their devices. And in March, SmartThings will roll out the upgraded 3D Map View for a more detailed experience on Samsung smartphones and TVs. Furthermore, a simple QR code will allow users to add family and friends to their SmartThings ecosystem, so that every member of the household can create their own routines.

Using smart sensors and AI, SmartThings will be able to detect unusual circumstances, such as a fall, and send alerts to designated family and caregivers10. Also, thanks to the Galaxy SmartTag2, users can track their pets’ activities and digitally store identifying information by attaching the tag to a collar or harness11.

Another point EVP Jung discussed was how the Bixby voice assistant is allowing smart homes to become more dynamic with its enhanced AI capabilities. Bixby can now automatically route commands to the most appropriate devices based on an understanding of the user’s location and activities. Key technologies like Multi Device Wakeup combined with a shared communication protocol, enable Bixby to listen to commands with all the devices in a room but then only perform the requested action on the most relevant device. So if a user is in the kitchen watching a recipe video on their Family Hub, and they can call out, “Hey, Bixby! Play music!” At that point, music will play from the user’s smart speaker, but the recipe video will continue to play on the Family Hub, uninterrupted.

The TV, with the Samsung Daily+ service, will increasingly become a central hub for much of this smart home functionality, while also granting access to a variety of additional services. These include video calls through ConnecTime, video veterinary consultation services12, and Workout Tracker — through which workout data can be transferred to Samsung’s smart watches. Samsung also announced the new Samsung Daily Board13 service, which displays useful information about users’ homes, such as the weather or a live security camera feed from a home security system without the TV even being turned on. As is the case with SmartThings features, users can also access this information via voice command.

Bringing the Home and Car Closer Together With Home-to-Car Capabilities

Samsung also announced developments in the automotive industry, starting with a partnership with Hyundai Motor Group. Samsung and Hyundai have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), which was announced ahead of CES 2024. Under the agreement, users will have access to Home-to-Car and Car-to-Home services, courtesy of SmartThings connectivity. Haeyoung Kwon, Head of Infotainment Development Center and SDV14 Execution Sub-Division at Hyundai Motor Group, delivered remarks regarding the partnership.

“Using Hyundai Motor Group’s software-defined vehicle, SmartThings will now work with Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles through the app,” Kwon said. “All of us at Hyundai Motor Group appreciate our partnership with Samsung, and we’re excited about the new features we’re bringing to your vehicles through smarter connectivity.”

Through SmartThings, users will be able to utilize voice commands to remotely perform functions in their car, such as heating it up in advance or opening and closing windows. SmartThings connectivity goes the other way, too, with users able to control home functions from their vehicle. Users will be able to automatically open and close garage doors based on the location of the car, as well as regulate home temperature. All of these actions can be carried out via voice commands.

Additionally, Samsung has further deepened the longstanding partnership with HARMAN to elevate the way users experience driving. Michelle Gattuso, Vice President of Product Management at HARMAN, discussed how the two companies are building new technologies to elevate the driving experience.

“Samsung’s leadership in consumer technology — together with HARMAN’s automotive expertise — has opened the door to game-changing experiences like HARMAN Ready Care, Ready Vision and Ready Display,” Gattuso said. “But now, the work we do with Samsung is getting even more integrated. Samsung and HARMAN are working in lockstep to bring even more impactful experiences to the entire in-cabin ecosystem.”

HARMAN’s Ready Care, which focuses on driver safety, implements deep learning neural networking techniques to monitor the driver’s movement and cognitive alertness, and can provide personalized reminders and alerts. Additionally, Ready Care can now identify whether passengers are adults or children, and adjust airbag deployment settings accordingly.

Furthermore, Ready Vision brings an intuitive display directly to windshields — courtesy of augmented reality — in drivers’ line of sight, right when they need it. For example, drivers have access to a map that updates according to routes in real time, as well as recommendations for the fastest route or where to stop for coffee. Another HARMAN product, Ready Upgrade, allows automakers to frequently update their vehicle’s hardware and software. This keeps vehicles relevant, modern and efficient for longer.

Samsung Focuses on Security and Privacy Across Devices

In this future of AI-enabled, deeply interconnected devices, Samsung recognizes that security and privacy are paramount. Shin Baik from the Mobile eXperience Security Team discussed the company’s security solutions as a foundation for the hyper-connected era.

One such solution is Samsung Knox Matrix, which now provides end-to-end encryption across many Samsung Galaxy smartphones and smart TVs. The technology will allow devices to monitor each other to identify and isolate security threats. Knox Vault, which helps keep user data safe on some of Samsung’s most popular devices, has been expanded to cover more devices connected by SmartThings, such as Samsung Neo QLED 8K TVs. Additionally, Samsung’s partnerships with major tech companies allow users to experience security and privacy in a way that is tailored to their specific needs.

Samsung Makes Strides in Responsible Materials, Energy Management, and Accessibility

Meanwhile, Inhee Chung, Vice President of the Samsung Corporate Sustainability Center, highlighted Samsung’s plans for a more circular economy. As part of these plans, Samsung increasingly incorporates recycled materials into its products — including recycled plastic sourced from discarded fishing nets in Galaxy devices15, recycled plastic in TVs, and recycled aluminum in Bespoke refrigerators16. Additionally, the company’s Certified ReNewed program — available in the U.S. and select European countries — offers affordable refurbished phones, while Galaxy Upcycling allows consumers to reuse or repurpose their old phones in creative ways. The company plans to scale up recycling and upcycling, as well.

As for the ways Samsung’s technology contributes to sustainability efforts, the company is utilizing AI to make the use of its products more energy-efficient through features like SmartThings AI Energy Mode, which automatically optimizes energy usage to help users save electricity. These features are yet another example of how AI technology will not only make lives easier, but also allow consumers to live in a way that is more environmentally and economically responsible.

Thanks to a new collaboration with Tesla, SmartThings Energy is becoming even more useful both inside and outside of the home. The collaboration has integrated SmartThings Energy with Tesla products, including electric vehicles (EVs), the Powerwall home battery, Solar Inverter and Wall Connector EV charging solution. Another benefit is that SmartThings Energy users can take advantage of the Tesla app’s Powerwall “Storm Watch” function, which flags severe weather through SmartThings not only on the Tesla app, but also on users’ connected Samsung TVs and mobile phones. SmartThings can also help users prepare for power outages by activating AI Energy Mode to extend the usage time of backup energy stored in their Tesla Powerwalls.

Samsung is adding new features to increase device accessibility, such as digital appliances responding to hands-free gestures. Additionally, mobile devices provide auto-generated captions during calls, and TVs and displays offer a new, AI-enabled text-to-speech feature that converts subtitles into spoken audio. To further aid those with low vision, Relumino Together is a new viewing mode on Samsung TVs that enables users of all abilities to watch TV together, with or without visual adjustments. Now, everyone can enjoy home entertainment together at the same time.

Samsung Electronics today announced a collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group to expand its SmartThings platform to support connected cars, including electric vehicles (EVs). The announcement came after the companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on January 3 to develop solutions for future lifestyles that fully integrate the smart home and connected cars.

The two companies will work together for the next-generation smart home to connect Samsung’s SmartThings with Hyundai and Kia’s connected cars, including EVs, to develop the “Home-to-Car” and “Car-to-Home” services as well as an integrated home energy management service.

The Home-to-Car and Car-to-Home services connect the smart home with in-vehicle infotainment systems, allowing for remote control in both directions. Through the SmartThings platform, users will be able to perform a variety of actions pertaining to their cars while at home — starting them, controlling smart air conditioning, opening and closing windows and checking their charging status. And from cars, the control of home appliances such as TVs, air conditioners and EV chargers will also be possible.

“This collaboration will enable communication from Home-to-Car and integrated home energy management services that are optimized for future lifestyles,” said Chanwoo Park, Executive Vice President at Samsung Electronics. “By connecting the SmartThings platform with vehicles, we’ll be able to significantly enhance the customer experience in both the home and the car.”

Users will be able to adjust their environments with SmartThings by simultaneously operating multiple devices — including vehicles — through routines such as “good morning routine” and “arriving home routine.” For example, when a Galaxy smartphone’s morning alarm goes off, the curtains will automatically open, and the lights and television will turn on. When users are ready to go out for work, the user’s car will adjust itself to an ideal temperature. Also, the smartphone and TV screens will display information such as the EV’s remaining battery and driving range.

“This is an opportunity to make the connected car’s Car-to-Home and Home-to-Car services more convenient in various fields,” said Haeyoung Kwon, Vice President of Hyundai and Kia’s Infotainment Development Center. “We plan to accelerate our technology development to continuously make global Hyundai and Kia customers’ journeys meaningful.”

The integrated home energy management service will allow users to monitor how much energy is consumed by the connected devices in their homes. Energy information of their EVs and chargers will also be available, enabling users to adjust the optimal time for charging their vehicles. EVs connected to the integrated home energy management service offer the possibility of automatically setting the optimal time for charging by factoring in different pricing by time of day,1 the power demand response (DR) program,2 photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage system (ESS) data,3 and time-specific carbon emissions.4

▲ Examples of Home-to-Car and Car-to Home services to be developed

To further strengthen Car-to-Home services, Samsung is working closely with HARMAN, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics. HARMAN’s “Ready Upgrade” is a digital cockpit package product that allows hardware and software upgrades. With Ready Upgrade, users will be able to install SmartThings functions to utilize various Car-to-Home services.

1 Higher rates are applied depending on the season and time of day.
2 Incentives are provided to participating households to reduce energy consumption in response to the DR signal during peak hours, when power usage is concentrated.
3 Monitoring of electrical energy production/consumption/storage through PV/ESS.
4 Carbon emissions and reductions are monitored through information regarding the amount of carbon emitted when consuming 1KWh of electricity.

Samsung Electronics today announced that it will use CES® 2024 to introduce Samsung’s newest kitchen products, applications and features, powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and SmartThings connectivity, enabling an ecosystem that delivers better food and kitchen experiences. Notable products and features in the lineup include the 2024 Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub1 — which is the industry’s first home Internet of Things (IoT) refrigerator launched in 2016 — equipped with the all-new AI Vision Inside feature, the new Anyplace Induction Cooktop and enhancements to the Samsung Food service.

“We are both proud and excited to be showcasing these upgraded AI and connectivity features, which utilize the latest technology to help everyone take their food and kitchen experiences to the next level,” said Moohyung Lee, EVP and Head of the Customer Experience Team of Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “We are committed to letting users enjoy the many benefits of our innovative food ecosystem across a wide range of devices and features.”

AI Features That Enable Food Ideas and Intelligence

To enhance the experience in the kitchen, the 2024 Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+ has been packed with a variety of innovative technologies. One impressive new feature is AI Vision Inside, which uses a smart internal camera that can recognize items being placed in and out of the refrigerator. Also, it is equipped with “Vision AI” technology, which can identify up to 33 different fresh food items based on a predefined set of training data comprising approximately one million food photographs.2 With the food list that is available and editable on the Family Hub+ screen, users can also manually add expiration date information for items that they would like to keep track and the refrigerator sends out alerts through its 32” LCD screen for items before reaching that date.

Image of food list generated by AI Vision Inside on Family Hub+

Also, with the assistance of the Fridge Manager feature, which monitors the status of the water filter in the refrigerator and alerts when a replacement is needed, the Family Hub+ screen offers easy, one-click purchase of new water filters from Amazon.3

Appliance screen functionality does not stop there. Samsung’s new Anyplace Induction Cooktop and Slide-in Range are each equipped with a 7” LCD screen, where users can view the recipes that were selected and saved from the Family Hub+ to assist their meal preparation. The new Anyplace Induction also offers improvements in its basic cooking features such as efficient and borderless heating of pots and pans on any part of the cooktop, thanks to Samsung’s induction sheet coil technology. And with Anti-Scratch Glass applied instead of a typical ceramic glass, users won’t have to worry about scratching their induction surface when moving cookware.

What’s more, the Samsung Food application — which can now be accessed on the Family Hub+, the Anyplace Induction Cooktop and the Slide-in Range — brings several upgraded AI features. The “Personalize” feature4 powered by the enhanced Food AI allows users to adapt recipes to reflect their dietary requirements beyond what was previously available — vegan, fusion — to accommodate gluten-free, pescatarian, dairy-free and other diets. Meanwhile, the new “Image-to-Recipe” feature4 with the enhanced Vision AI now recognizes meals and multiple food items from photographs and explores dishes that can be made with those ingredients. Lastly, Tailored Meal Plan analyzes users’ information by connecting to their Samsung Health profiles5 to create personalized meals based on their health needs.

AI-Powered Connected Appliances and Features for an Enhanced Kitchen Every Day

With the Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+ as the centerpiece, the food ecosystem is all about how the AI features in these kitchen products and the Samsung Food service connect and support each other, enabling users to have a better relationship with their food throughout the day and delivering a full range of smart, connected kitchen experiences.

Samsung Food also connects with and ties in Samsung Health6 to benefit the lives of users. The service uses health information collected from Samsung Health to suggest healthy, appropriate recipes. After that, users can send cooking instructions for these recipes to their various kitchen appliances with just a few key presses.

Then there is Tap View,7 which offers enhanced convenience by allowing users to easily mirror the display of their Galaxy smartphones to the Family Hub+ screen. Furthermore, users can also enjoy videos from the YouTube application right from the refrigerator screen for more information and entertainment.

Image of kitchen with Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+

All these advancements build toward Samsung’s greater goal of expanding its seamlessly connected, AI-based food ecosystem with the key focus of providing users with superior kitchen experiences that require less effort.
