Samsung introduced a new Always On Display with the Galaxy Note7 including enhanced features designed to help users get more out of their smartphone, even when the screen is off. The Always On Display not only makes a strong first impression, but is also an element of design that differentiates the Galaxy Note7 from other devices on the market. From the Screen off memo that all but replaces the ubiquitous sticky note, to brand new customization options, the new Always On Display keeps users on track in an always-on world.

Screen Off Memo

With the new Screen off memo function, users do not need to launch the memo app to jot down a reminder or a to-do list. Instead, they can conveniently use the phone’s S Pen to write a note directly on the Galaxy Note7’s off screen.

Once a memo has been jotted down, it will remain visible on the Always On Display for an hour to remind users of important events, similar to a sticky note. Memos can also be pinned to the Always On Display so users can check them at a later time by simply double tapping the Memo icon. Users can also store these memos in the Samsung Notes app directly from the Always On Display.

More Information, Faster Access

When the Always On Display made its debut with the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge earlier this year, it gave users continuous access to important information such as the time, date and missed calls. But with the Galaxy Note7, Samsung is taking things even further by expanding the amount of information that can be displayed.

Now, on top of missed calls and messages, users can also check their calendar for events and view notifications from various apps. For example, they can get song information from music apps.

In addition, with the new Direct Access feature, users can easily react to notifications and automatically launch an app or the music player by simply double tapping the notification that is displayed. This makes it possible for users to quickly reply to messages, edit calendar information or pause a song. Direct Access not only adds convenience, it also saves users valuable time.

Ultimate Personalization

In addition to offering superior convenience, the Always On Display provides a variety of personalization options, making the Galaxy Note7 as unique as its user.

Users can customize the Always On Display from the Settings menu by selecting from a wide array of clock faces and modes, as well as calendars and images. Users can select their favorite image from the Internet or their smartphone Gallery as the Always On Display background. Users can also edit the font style and color, and even set their own signature.

Saving Power

Although the Always On Display continuously displays key information, it is power efficient, using less than 1 percent of battery per hour*.

With the Super AMOLED display on the Galaxy Note7, the black pixels completely shut off, enabling the Always On Display capability. Also, Samsung was able to decrease the power consumption of the display’s related components, such as the Display Driver IC (DDI), which consumes the most power, the Application Processor (AP) and other various sensors.

To further improve performance of the DDI, Samsung separated the power usage process into two modes – the normal mode and Always On Display mode – by applying the Smart Power Saving hardware algorithm, reducing power consumption even when the display is in sleep mode.

In another effort to minimize power waste, Samsung integrated technology that enables users to turn the Always On Display feature on or off. The Galaxy Note7’s proximity, RGB light sensors and its accelerometer determine if the Always On Display should be on or off, depending on the device’s external environment. For instance, if the Galaxy Note7 senses that the device is in a pocket or bag, the Always On Display will turn off.

In addition, the Always On Display automatically turns off when the phone’s battery goes below 5 percent, or when the user activates the Night Clock, which is located on the device’s edge display.

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are designed with an intuitive feel and uniform screen that maintain Samsung’s design heritage. The new user experience (UX) includes Always On Display that enables users to check time and notification with ease, enhanced use of messaging with minimized interference of other apps and one-touch shortcuts that increase functionality. With improved processing ability and software, the phones were designed with users’ needs in mind.

The UX designers of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge explained the many design changes of the device and how they see these changes improving the user experience.

(from left to right) Jonghyun Han, Jieun Yang, Sangdeuk Nam, Sukjae Lee, Donggyu Lim

Q. What differentiates the UX in the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge?

Sangdeuk Nam: These phones are designed with special features that reflect the actual needs, usage patterns and experience of the users. In particular, the new UX includes refinements to the clock and weather information on the home screen, an app search within the app tray – making for a faster app search.

Hyosang Bang: As we designed the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, we aimed the entire process of using the phone –taking it out of one’s pocket, using it and putting it back in one’s pocket – is one effortless flow of motion and experience. Through features such as the Always On Display, improved connectivity between messages, and quick access through the edge screen, the phones are designed to provide information in an intuitive and handy way.

Q. What is the Always On Display (AOD) and how do you expect users to benefit from this feature?

Jieun Yang: Through our research, we were able to see that users repeatedly turn the phone display on and off throughout the day just to check the time. The Always On Display allows users to check important information like time without turning on the screen and we expect improved user satisfaction from this feature.

To personalize their device, we also have developed themes like space, and many more, that users can download for AOD. The favorite theme will be applied throughout the device, including the clock and image on the home screen and will be continuous on the turned-on screen and the turned-off screen.

Q. What is the Smart Switch, and how will it benefit users?

Sang-a Eun: Some users are reluctant to change their phones because of the difficulty and inconvenience of moving data from one device to another. By using the Smart Switch, a service that allows users to easily send personal data from an old to a new device, users will have no trouble maintaining all previous experiences –even between various devices like a phone and tablet.

The users are able to transfer data from the previous device using a USB connector or by executing it in the setting menu of the device. To allow new users to easily and quickly send data themselves, we have explained the data transmission processes through image and infographic depicting the data transmission stage.

Q. What is notable about the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge messaging interface?

Hyojin Bae: The Galaxy S7 and S7 edge messaging are a trendier version of Legacy messaging and are intended to be used the same way as instant messaging (IM). We designed it to have Cross-app functionality, meaning that users can perform various activities using one particular app without moving around to different apps.

Sukjae Lee: For instance, if a user receives a web link in a text message, email, or memo app, they can use a web viewer to check the link in the same screen without exiting the app he or she was using. Also, the user can easily send attachments, like images, videos, music, memos, schedules, contact, and more, through a separate Attach Sheet interface.

Q. What is notable about the Sound & Haptic system in the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge?

Youngku Lee: The main focus in developing the audio ux was also the “consideration for users”. For example, we changed the low battery alert sound to be a more pleasant and relaxing auditory experience.

One example is the Galaxy devices’ signature sound – “Over the Horizon”. For the new Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, a fresh interpretation of the song has been uploaded in an exciting Fusion jazz style, a music genre that we think exemplifies the feeling of consideration.

Q. What are the improvements in UX for the enhanced edge function?

Donggyu Lim: The edge UX allows more efficient access to the routine tasks that are most frequently used. The biggest improvement is that the edge can be summoned on any screen without having to press a certain button. Also, the edge domain has been expanded so that users can check the news or scores for a particular sports team, right away. We also improved the shortcut function so that the user’s most frequently contacted person, most frequently used app, or the most frequently used function can be added and summoned on any screen.

Q. Is there a possibility for the edge UX advancement in the future?

Jonghyun Han: Samsung has released its third edge model and is also continuously advancing edge UX. In addition to the edge functions that we have prepared, there are even more functions being distributed through the SDK for use by third party app developers.

In the future, we expect that there will be an increase in more diverse services and functions through the expanded scope of the edge. Opportunities for messenger services, various news providers, and O2O services are wide open as well.

Always On Display (AOD) of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge allows users to check the time and date with ease, and also keep an eye on missed calls and message alerts, even when the phone is not in use and just on standby. And, with its variety of clocks, calendars and themes, the AOD even offers customization options.

Samsung began developing the function in earnest about three years ago, based on two of users’ biggest needs: the ability to check information quickly and to differentiate themselves from other users. But there were multiple factors that needed to be considered. One of the most pressing ones was power consumption.

Decreasing Power Consumption from the Inside Out

The AMOLED display of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge was beneficial for implementing the AOD in the first place, because the black pixels of an AMOLED display actually are turned off, and thus consume less power.

Despite this advantage, other components, such as the Display Driver IC (DDI), the Application Processor (AP) and various sensors still consume power.

From among these components, the DDI consumes the most power. To implement the AOD in the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, Samsung reduced power consumption in sleep mode to less than one-fifth of previous rates. It’s almost half the power consumption of the Night Clock feature on the previous model, which uses only the edge screen of the display.

Samsung also applied Smart Power Saving, a new hardware algorithm, to further improve the performance of the DDI of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge.

Through this, the company was able to separate the power needed for the DDI in normal activity mode and that needed for the AOD at the hardware level. That is to say, it is like how a car driver chooses 2-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive depending on road conditions in order to use the engine power in the most efficient way.

Power consumption rates vary depending on the information users want to check via the AOD. The display only uses eight colors when it displays simple information, including the time and date. If more images or colors are to be displayed on the screen, then bit depth is increased to 16 million colors, requiring a little more power. This change happens automatically and seamlessly by AOD software and hardware in a harmonious way.

A Display That Responds to You and Your Surroundings

Samsung also reduced the power consumption by decreasing the frame rate. Compared to the phone’s normal mode, the AOD uses fewer frames per second—the number of times the image on the screen is refreshed per second. It’s because the AOD displays a relatively small amount of information compared with the phone’s normal mode. Nevertheless, Samsung determined an optimal number of frames to ensure that there was no compromise in display quality.

The new AOD feature ensures that users can check information at any time, but special proximity, RGB light and accelerometer sensors work to automatically disable the AOD in situations when users are unable to see the screen, such as when the phone is in a pocket or a bag.

These sensors also help to adjust the brightness of information displayed on the AOD in the same way that the display’s brightness is automatically fine-tuned according to light levels in the users’ surroundings.

Of course, users have the option to enable or disable the AOD, and should the phone’s battery level reach less than 5 percent, the AOD automatically turns off.

Samsung has tried to provide a more immersive viewing experience with its AMOLED displays. But now, the company has taken things to the next level with a new feature that distinguishes the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, even when its screen is on standby.

What makes a good smartphone?

Extraordinary design? Groundbreaking features? High-powered performance?

In short, a good smartphone is one that answers to the needs and demands of the user.

Created for today’s mobile lifestyle, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge do just that by leading the industry with a unique mobile experience that features a refined design, higher-quality camera, enhanced software functionality, and unsurpassed connectivity to a galaxy of services, products and experiences. In addition, Samsung’s latest flagship devices marry sleek design with powerful performance so users can do even more, faster and easier.

Here are seven reasons why the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are the most anticipated smartphones yet.

1. High Quality Images, No Matter the Time of Day or Location

The most raved about new features of the latest additions to Samsung’s Galaxy S line-up are its new camera capabilities. As the first smartphones to apply Dual Pixel technology, the devices are able to capture high quality images in low light environments, while a large F1.7 aperture ensures brighter, sharper photographs. New Motion Panorama and Selfie Flash functions let users have an entirely new phonetography experience.

2. Refined Design

While preserving the design heritage of its predecessor, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge boast an even more seamless connection between its glass and metal materials, along with a slimmer rear camera. Thanks to the curvy form of the devices’ glass, these models now provide an even better grip and naturally fit in one hand. And, bringing back the microSD slot, the new flagship smartphones are more functional than ever.

3. Water and Dust Resistance

For people who work, travel and play in all kinds of locations and environments, the upgraded IP68 water and dust resistance of the devices is especially well-received. As the premium standard of protection against water and dust, the feature allows users to enjoy the sleek, curvy design of Samsung’s latest flagship smartphones without the inconvenience of a bulky additional case.

4. Made for Gaming

With their optimized hardware and enhanced UX, which allow for smoother graphics and longer playing times, Samsung’s new smartphones can satisfy even the most demanding mobile gamer. And with the new Game Launcher app, users now have the ability to take control of their mobile gaming experience with numerous customization options.

5. A Phone That Stands Out, Even When the Screen is Off

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge offer a new Always On Display (AOD) feature that delivers constant information and notifications, such as the time or number of missed calls, while utilizing a miniscule amount of battery. With plenty of customization features, the AOD can be as unique as its user.

6. Simple and Soft UX

Customizable lock and home screens, beautified icons and the user-friendly Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system have taken the user experience of the new Galaxy smartphones to an entirely new level. In particular, the refined edge screen of the Galaxy S7 edge provides practical functions and easier access to users’ frequently used content and tasks.

7. An Assortment of Accessories

No smartphone is complete without its accessories, and Samsung offers a collection of them to complement the design and enhance the features of its just-revealed devices. From battery packs and a LINE Friends collection to a new LED View Cover and the lifestyle band, Charm, these new accessories offer seamless integration to enhance one’s personal style.

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will be available starting March 11 in select markets.

How many times a day do you check your smartphone? Dozens? More than a hundred? Whether waiting for an important text message, seeing what calls you missed or just to know the time, most of us examine our phones many, many times during the day. And with new features and apps adding uses to our devices all the time, we are constantly finding new reasons to check our phones even more often.

But the new Always On Display (AOD) feature of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge puts an end to all of that. Now you can glance at your phone at any time and see your latest notifications and other key information immediately without waking your screen.

https://youtu.be/shbjTXIFMjU

Convenience and Power Conservation

When activated, the Always On Display constantly shows your favorite information, but in a way that uses very little of the battery—less than one percent per hour, in fact. And, in case the battery goes below five percent, the Always On Display is automatically turned off. Sure, the new Galaxy smartphones feature larger batteries that last longer than ever, but everyone wants to get the most life out of each charge as possible.

Furthermore, sometimes you don’t want to shine the full glow of your phone—like when you are at the movies and you want to see if your friends have sent you a message about where to meet later. Having a subtler way of checking your phone would be a really big help. The Always On screen is clear and easy to see, but keeps the brightness down to a minimum. Now, checking the time, date, battery level of your device, and your most important notifications, such as the number of missed calls and text messages, is incredibly easy, but it can be done subtly.

Customize Your Display

In addition to offering superior convenience, the Always On Display can also be customized from the Settings menu and Quick Settings panel. There are clock modes, calendars and abstract patterns in a variety of styles to suit just about every taste. Select from analogue and digital clock faces, or even choose to display two clocks at once, so you can keep track of the time in different parts of the world. Or, if you prefer a more minimal style, opt to display an artistic abstract image. With so many customization options, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge set themselves apart from other devices. After all, your smartphone should be as unique as you are.

The Always On Display is one more example of how Samsung creates innovations inspired by your life, designed with you in mind. The Galaxy smartphones have long been at the forefront of the industry, and now Samsung has made them even better, redesigned for how you experience life.
