WindFree: Cooling Redefined by Tradition

A prevalent pet peeve for air conditioner users is feeling a chilly breeze that is too strong when their units are running. To solve this issue, Samsung has developed a brand-new feature inspired by the traditional Korean practice of stone ice storage, known as seokbinggo. Essentially an ancient form of refrigeration, seokbinggo managed to keep items cool without cold drafts — making it an ideal source of inspiration for this new feature.

The WindFree air conditioner was successfully launched in 2015 after four years of extensive research and development. This ‘Outstanding’ piece of technology helps cool rooms gently and evenly by dispersing air through more than 23,000 micro air holes,¹ so users feel as if they’re floating inside a cool, comfortable cloud.

AI Cleaning: Meet the World’s First UL-Verified AI-Powered Cordless Stick Vacuum

A vacuum cleaner that works well on wooden floors but suddenly struggles when it’s moved on carpets results in an inconvenient cleaning experience. The Bespoke Jet AI, the world’s first UL-verified AI cordless stick vacuum cleaner,² relieves that kind of stress since it optimizes the cleaning mode according to floor types. But the question remains — how does this ‘AI-Powered’ stick vacuum determine what type of floor it is placed on?

The Bespoke Jet AI detects brush load and meticulously analyzes the data collected to classify floor type. Boasting 27 patents from seven countries, this innovation is a game changer for those who find opening fridge doors to be a challenge. Designed to be used with one simple touch this thoughtful feature helps make the refrigerator more accessible to a wider range of users. Created to enhance the ‘Flexible Use’ of home appliances, Auto Open Door also comes in handy when users have their hands full of groceries.

Less Microfiber Filter and Cycle: Reduce Microplastics in Drained Water

Microplastics pose a significant threat to ocean ecosystems, and around half a million tonnes of microplastics are released into the ocean from laundry every year.⁷

Samsung has consistently considered the impact of microplastics when researching advanced technologies and worked together with Patagonia. These dedicated efforts led to the introduction of the Less Microfiber Cycle in 2022 and the Less Microfiber Filter in 2023 – some of the latest additions to Samsung Core Tech’s ‘Durable and Sustainable’ category. Both the Less Microfiber Cycle and the Less Microfiber Filter help reduce microplastic emission in the rinse water.

Samsung has continued its efforts by providing the Less Microfiber Cycle update through SmartThings⁸ since this past August⁹ so users can easily download and run the cycle.

Samsung’s commitment to decreasing microplastics emission in the rinse water has gone noticed, as evidenced by the Less Microfiber Filter being recognized as one of TIME’s “The Best Inventions of 2023” in October.

Understanding evolving user needs and preferences, Samsung Electronics’ Bespoke product line boasts advanced features and sleek, timeless designs perfect for various home interiors — from contemporary apartments to “hanoks,” or traditional Korean-style houses. To showcase the versatility of Bespoke appliances, Samsung collaborated with Superposition, an art furniture design group, to unveil an innovative exhibit at the Hanok Gallery Jiwooheon in Seoul that reimagined the modern home.

Samsung Newsroom sat down with Euna Oh, Chief CMF¹ Designer of Kitchen at Samsung Electronics, Ahjung Joo, CMF Designer of Kitchen at Samsung Electronics, and Superposition team members Jeong-Seon Seo, Sun-Kwang Seo and Jong-Min Kim to learn how the “Timeless” exhibit seamlessly blended the past and present.

High-End Interior Designs for the Home

The Bespoke Infinite Line (Infinite Line), Samsung’s premium line of appliances, was the center of the exhibition. To create a product lineup that was physically and aesthetically fit for modern kitchens, the company carefully selected high-quality, long-lasting materials and developed a unique CMF that utilizes aluminum and ceramic finishes. As this CMF contains recycled materials, Samsung built a collection of home appliances that is luxurious, visually distinct and eco-conscious — recognizing that modern interior design and high-end kitchen concepts incorporate elements from nature.

“Consumer preferences for home and kitchen interiors shifted quite drastically during the pandemic, as people were spending more time at home,” said Chief CMF Designer of Kitchen Euna Oh. “The Infinite Line was released when demand for premium appliances was quite high.”

“Our timeless metal finishes do not lose their value or beauty over time and we ensured this by working diligently during the development process, which began in 2019. We also conducted a thorough review process to ensure the products could be mass produced,” stated CMF Designer of Kitchen Ahjung Joo. “Cutting refrigerator-sized panels of aluminum using CNC² processing was almost unprecedented in the home appliance industry. Given its durability and resistance to scratches and dents, aluminum became the ideal material for the Infinite Line.”

Visual Impact Through Practicality and Usability

A highlight of the exhibit was the special collaborative artwork by Superposition that seamlessly blended with the Infinite Line. Using traditional Korean objects such as “byungpoong” and “duiju,” Superposition furniture designer Jeong-Seon Seo transformed refrigerators and dishwashers into artistic pieces resembling furniture rather than individual appliances. “When conceptualizing the exhibit, we wanted to focus on the long-lasting value and usability of the Infinite Line,” he said.

One of the eye-catching pieces in the exhibit was “Sea” — an 11-panel screen depicting pristine white sand that resembled Cera White, the Infinite Line finish made of ceramic. The screen incorporated a refrigerator, freezer and kimchi refrigerator and connected them using eight digitally drawn illustrations, blurring the lines between art and technology.

“When I first saw the Bespoke Infinite Line refrigerator, I was immediately reminded of a white, sandy beach,” said Superposition graphic designer Jong-Min Kim. “The Cera White finish of the Infinite Line refrigerator was designed to resemble organic textures inspired by nature. I wanted to mirror Samsung’s aesthetic, so I used acrylic to emulate waves crashing on a beach. When you look at the five overlapping acrylics in the piece, you can almost feel the waves.”

In addition, the exhibition showcased modern kitchen appliances, such as induction ranges and refrigerators, integrated with “duiju,” traditional Korean furniture used to store food. These pieces were “Island,” a kitchen island unit combining an Infinite Line induction range and dishwasher, and “Ham,” a built-in featuring an Infinite Line refrigerator and wine cooler. The exhibits juxtaposed the beauty of traditional furniture with the cutting-edge technology of the Infinite Line to display a new take on contemporary kitchen environments and home aesthetics.

Evoking Timelessness in the Modern Era

Samsung and Superposition share a similar pursuit when innovating — instilling timelessness into products by combining classic and modern design elements.

“For the Infinite Line, we reinterpreted vertical design elements that were used in ancient Greek architectural columns,” said Joo. “We also utilized materials that resemble the textures of soil and stone. The Infinite Line’s simple design and refined appearance evoke an organic look and feel that is ideal for high-end kitchens.”

“The Infinite Line combines natural textures and materials with modern functionality. This is similar to how Superposition reinterprets Korean artwork using digital art and acrylics,” said Kim. “This collaboration was intriguing because Samsung and Superposition follow different design principles, yet their products feel very similar to one another.”

Blending Modernity and Tradition Within the Home

The exhibition beautifully showcased the concept of timelessness by exploring the intersection of nature and technology as well as the harmony between tradition and modernity. Throughout the project’s development, Samsung and Superposition discovered similarities with one another — making this artistic endeavor more meaningful.

“Because the Infinite Line’s design philosophy perfectly aligned with our vision, this collaboration was enjoyable,” said Superposition marketing manager Sun-Kwang Seo. “We are honored to have worked with Samsung and are thrilled to have created this exhibition in partnership.”

Oh discussed how the exhibit redefined the boundaries of art. “Previously, I had mostly seen the Infinite Line in modern interior spaces,” she said. “Viewing the Infinite Line in a hanok was quite an interesting sight and something I had never imagined. Our collaboration with Superposition delivered a new take on art.”

Drawing inspiration from historical architecture and art, the Infinite Line blends the ingenuity of modern and classic designs with the practical functionality users desire. As a result, Samsung has been able to create a distinct line of high-end appliances ideal for any luxury kitchen.

Through this collaboration, Samsung and Superposition demonstrated that modernity and tradition can harmoniously coexist side-by-side within any home.

The Bespoke AI Washer & Dryer Combo, featuring Digital Inverter Heat Pump technology, was a showstopper at Samsung Electronics’ booth at IFA 2023. This innovative product attracted the attention of many visitors for its ability to seamlessly handle both washing and drying functions within a single machine — all while improving space efficiency in compact laundry rooms. Powering this appliance’s capabilities is none other than “Core Tech,” a philosophy that underscores Samsung’s home appliances.

Introduced at this year’s IFA, the Core Tech concept reveals the vision behind Samsung’s home appliances as well as what drives the company to consistently push the boundaries of innovation. Through this three-part series, Samsung Newsroom will dive into the essence of Core Tech, showcasing its diverse applications in Samsung’s home appliances.

Inside Samsung Home Appliances: Core Tech

“When we first kicked off with developing the Bespoke AI Washer & Dryer Combo, we weren’t seeking opportunities for moderate changes. We were aiming to create something completely different,” said Moohyung Lee, EVP and Head of R&D Team of Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “I focused on securing enough time and freedom for our engineers to explore. Driven by the Core Tech philosophy, they ultimately developed a product that exceeded expectations.”

Core Tech is comprised of four key themes — “Outstanding,” indicating Samsung’s unique or first-introduced features; “AI-Powered,” representing the use of artificial intelligence and the pursuit of automation to reduce the need for user action; “Flexible Use,” enabling customization for diverse lifestyles; and “Durable & Sustainable,” emphasizing both product and environmental sustainability. The Bespoke AI Washer & Dryer Combo exemplifies these ideas, incorporating proprietary technologies such as AI Ecobubble and custom AI-driven washing and drying capabilities that optimize efficiency and performance. Moreover, it helps users save energy by connecting to AI Energy Mode in SmartThings Energy.

Breaking Down Core Tech Themes: Innovations in Home Appliances

Outstanding signifies the technologies unique to Samsung’s home appliances branded with patents and the company’s commitment to enhancing consumer lifestyles. Notable technologies in this category include AI Ecobubble which optimizes laundry performance with bubbles to help detergents better penetrate fabrics; WindFree Cooling which creates a comfortable environment without cold drafts; and Beverage Center inside the fridge which provides quick and easy access to cold drinks.

AI-Powered represents the evolving home appliance products, emphasizing how artificial intelligence and automation can reduce user intervention. This advancement can be especially beneficial for those who have become too familiar with conventional appliances and are unfamiliar with ways to better use them. Samsung’s AI-powered appliances learn usage patterns, provide tailored recommendations and optimize settings automatically — ultimately redefining user convenience.

Flexible Use allows customization of home appliances to meet diverse user preferences, such as region, generation or physical environment. For instance, the FlexZone in the refrigerator allows users to store food, wine and other items properly by adjusting the mode in the designated zone. The Dual Cook Flex Oven expands culinary possibilities by dividing its cavity and door into two, allowing users to prepare multiple dishes at different temperatures.

Lastly, Durable & Sustainable embodies Samsung’s commitment to extend product lifespan and enable users to make eco-conscious decisions. It is crucial for home appliances since they are used for extended periods and continuously plugged in. This category contains technologies such as the Digital Inverter Compressor and Motor that help save energy and the Less Microfiber Cycle, which is a result from working together with Patagonia, to reduce microplastic emissions during wash cycles.

Executive Vice President Lee emphasized the interconnectedness of these themes: “These four themes are not mutually exclusive but rather complementary.” For instance, the Less Microfiber Filter for washers can be installed in a choice of ways² flexibly (Flexible Use), but considers the product’s environmental impact (Durable & Sustainable). “Ultimately, the goal is to provide unique solutions — even for problems consumers may not yet recognize — by digging deeper and observing the demands of our users,” he added.

Core Tech not only embodies the cutting-edge technologies in the home appliances market but also looks forward to the future. Samsung has consistently offered distinctive solutions through careful evaluation of the value its products bring to consumers. Samsung Electronics today announced the launch of Samsung Food, a personalized, AI-powered food and recipe platform.

Releasing in eight languages¹ in 104 countries around the world, Samsung Food will offer comprehensive food experiences through more than 160,000 available recipes, acting as a personalized assistant that helps users discover new dishes, create tailored meal plans and order ingredients online. The service will also help users control their cooking appliances, while giving step-by-step guided cooking and allowing users to share their favorite recipes on social media.

Building on the foundation of Samsung’s wide range of cooking appliances and food services, Samsung Food uses AI technology to go beyond existing capabilities and deliver a food platform that truly adapts to the needs and lifestyles of its users. To accomplish this, Samsung Food draws from the extensive database of Whisk, a smart food platform acquired by Samsung Next in 2019 that leverages advanced technology called Food AI, which suggests meals based on user preferences and food seasonality.

“The food we enjoy and the way we prepare it are central to our daily lives, and we all love to cook and eat together,” said Chanwoo Park, Executive Vice President and Head of the Service Biz Group of the Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “By connecting digital appliances and mobile devices across the Samsung ecosystem and assisting users from shopping list to dinner plate, Samsung Food is using advanced AI capabilities to deliver a highly personalized, all-in-one food experience that users can control straight from their palms.”

Food Your Way: Recipe Exploration and Personalization, AI-Enhanced Meal Planning, Kitchen Connectivity and Social Sharing

Samsung Food’s wide range of features support users every step of the way during the meal planning and cooking process, spanning four key areas: recipe discovery and personalization, tailored meal planning, connected cooking and social sharing functions.

For recipe discovery, Samsung Food lets users save recipes to their personal digital recipe box anytime and from anywhere. The app analyzes recipes, standardizes their format and organizes them to create shopping lists based on their ingredients. In addition to mobile devices, users can also access the Samsung Food service with their Bespoke Family Hub refrigerators.² Opened from the Family Hub touchscreen, Samsung Food provides recipe recommendations based on a list of available food items managed by the user.³

Samsung Food also comes with a Personalize Recipe function, enabling the app’s Food AI to directly change a saved recipe to better reflect users’ dietary requirements. For example, users can convert a recipe into a vegan or vegetarian version or make other changes to create a recipe that is more nutritionally balanced or incorporates in-stock ingredients. Users will even be able to create fusion recipes, such as Korean versions of Italian dishes, and adjust cook time or skill level of recipes.

To create individualized daily meal plans for users, the app makes AI-created recommendations based on user data,⁴ dietary preferences and favorite cuisine types and lets users add them to their meal planner. Nutritional breakdowns of ingredients are available at any time, and users can add items to their Samsung Food shopping list then send it straight to a retailer’s e-commerce checkout.⁵

With connected cooking, seamless Samsung Food connectivity lets users set timers, preheat ovens⁶ and send recipes’ cook settings straight to appliances⁷ through step-by-step guided cooking modes, all from their portable devices. Starting with the Bespoke Oven, Samsung plans to connect numerous appliances — including Bespoke induction ranges and Bespoke microwaves — to Samsung Food by the end of the year to expand convenience for users in the kitchen.

It’s easy for users to get social with Samsung Food by sharing their favorite dishes with the community, creating and publishing their own recipes and following their favorite food content creators.

From Samsung Health Incorporation to Vision AI: Upcoming Features for Samsung Food

Beyond Samsung Food capabilities available at launch, Samsung will continue adding new features and services to the app for an even more seamless and comprehensive personal food experience.

By the end of the year, Samsung plans to offer Samsung Health integration with Samsung Food so that users will be able to receive suggestions for diet management. The seamless syncing of information such as BMI, body composition and calorie consumption with Samsung Food will help users to hit health goals and maintain a balanced diet.

Planned for implementation in 2024, Vision AI technology will enable Samsung Food to recognize food items and meals photographed through the camera and provide details about them, including nutrition information. By analyzing food items, the app can recommend the best recipes to use them with, save these recipes to the user’s collection and add the required ingredients to a shopping list, all in a few taps.

Samsung and TOILETPAPER, the creative studio founded in 2010 by renowned Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan and photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari, introduced four new limited-edition Bespoke refrigerator door panels. TOILETPAPER’s distinct and eye-catching style has been seamlessly incorporated into these new designs, highlighting the studio’s characteristic playful and surreal aesthetics. This collaboration offers consumers exciting opportunities to personalize their kitchens and pushes the boundaries of what’s possible within the Bespoke style.

To discuss the inspiration behind the collaboration, Samsung Newsroom spoke with the founders of TOILETPAPER, Micol Talso, Creative Director and Project Lead at TOILETPAPER, and Jidam Hong, Head of Bespoke’s Aesthetic Intelligence Design Group at Samsung.

Q. What were your initial thoughts about Samsung and TOILETPAPER’s collaboration on the new Bespoke panels? Were there any similarities in approach that stood out?

TOILETPAPER founders: TOILETPAPER and Samsung are both trying to break away from limitations, challenge norms and showcase a wide range of possibilities. TOILETPAPER does this through surreal images, disrupting existing design conventions to help people see how interesting familiar, everyday objects can be. Samsung Bespoke achieves this goal by handing over more control to the people using its appliances through personalization and customization options, which is an exciting approach for appliance designers. This common vision made us a good match. Everything can be a canvas for our images, so why not appliances? Our designs don’t necessarily have to live in magazines and inside design studios – now, they can exist in the kitchen too.

Hong: Personalization was always a crucial part of our philosophy at Bespoke, and we were already well aware of TOILETPAPER’s colorful, evocative work. The studio’s designs have a striking but approachable feel, which is particularly popular with Millennial and Gen Z users. We felt that collaborating with TOILETPAPER would be an excellent next step forward in Bespoke’s personalization journey. Applying the eye-catching designs to our Bespoke refrigerators was an enriching creative experience, and we hope to use this work as a jumping-off point to expand into new designs in the future.

Q. As Creative Director and Head of Design, respectively, you must both have a wealth of experience leading various projects. Which of these has had the most lasting impact on you?

Talso: Since we first started TOILETPAPER, each project has been unique and exciting. Maybe that’s why I’m still here — the sense of surprise, the change, throwing oneself into new experiences and exploring unknown territories. It’s the lack of repetitiveness in TOILETPAPER’s creative process that attracts me most to it, thanks to our studio leaders Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari. They’ve always had the curiosity and courage to go further, whether it’s shifting from a magazine to a fashion brand or developing interactive exhibitions and designing everyday objects. Usually, when something works well, there is a temptation not to change it. But at TOILETPAPER, we have continued to evolve by being open to unusual collaborations, such as this latest one with Bespoke.

Hong: We have covered the Color, Material and Finish — or “CMF” — of a wide range of kitchen and home products, and each project has been an opportunity to learn and grow. We have been designing the CMF of home appliances: working with new shades and textures; staying on top of design trends; and learning how to push these trends further. This collaboration with TOILETPAPER was particularly interesting because the studio’s aesthetic has wholly different origins from the functional perspective that home appliance designs typically come from.

Q. What does Samsung’s design vision of True Customization have in common with TOILETPAPER?

Hong: Samsung’s vision of True Customization is about embracing creativity and uniqueness that lets us truly express ourselves as individuals. We want our appliances to be subtle when they need to be – sometimes customers need a product to blend in with and accentuate the existing style of their kitchens – but we also want our customers to be able to “go big” if they want to. TOILETPAPER’s work perfectly encapsulates this goal with striking images that make a statement. Just as TOILETPAPER is about making the mundane remarkable, Samsung believes Bespoke’s vision of True Customization is about breaking down design boundaries and showcasing what’s possible when you unleash your imagination.

TOILETPAPER founders: We think that both Samsung and TOILETPAPER work towards spreading creativity that speaks universally across cultures. By finding fresh new ways to present bold colors and exploring different mediums, our work can have a meaningful impact on people around the world. Ultimately, we think TOILETPAPER and Samsung Bespoke’s vision is to showcase extraordinary things in even the ordinary parts of life.

Q. TOILETPAPER has collaborated with various brands, from Nike, Armani and Kenzo to Mercedes Benz, Audi and BMW. How was this project with Samsung Bespoke different from previous collaborations?

Talso: The partnership with Samsung, the first home appliance brand we ever collaborated with, was certainly unique and memorable — and that’s exactly what we liked about it. We have collaborated with fashion, design and beauty brands, but the thought of working with a technology brand in the world of home appliances had never occurred to us. We thought it was an amazing opportunity to challenge ourselves with a new medium. It’s very liberating when you collaborate with a client and feel the possibilities are endless.

Q. What message would you like this limited-edition TOILETPAPER collection to convey to people?

Talso: Both Samsung and TOILETPAPER have embraced the desire to encourage self-expression and personal style through customization: Samsung with its transformative product design and the customizable Bespoke panels and TOILETPAPER with our bold, colorful and flamboyant images that can speak to a cross-generational audience. I think that technology and art work very well together — the first speaks more to the brain, the second to the heart.

Hong: Samsung has enjoyed many collaborations and held several contests that showcase the depth and breadth of Bespoke design, but these new designs by TOILETPAPER are taking our style to exciting new levels. The Bespoke lineup mostly employs a smooth, minimalist look that helps it harmonize with any décor, and our work with TOILETPAPER shows that this minimalism can also act as a blank canvas. Bespoke’s TOILETPAPER panels are bold, vivid and playful. They bring a whole standard of artistic expression to our appliances, and we hope they will let people completely reimagine the aesthetic potential of the objects that surround them every day.

Samsung Electronics today announced the upcoming global launch of the Samsung Bespoke Jet AI, the company’s most powerful cordless stick vacuum yet with up to 280W¹ of suction power, a self-emptying enhanced All-in-One Clean Station and artificial intelligence (AI)-based functionality. The Bespoke Jet AI will be available globally from June in markets including Australia, Europe² and the U.S., with preorders starting today.

Featuring a 250W and 280W model,³ the Bespoke Jet AI is available in two timeless Bespoke colors: Satin Black and Satin Greige.⁴

“The Bespoke Jet AI is designed for every lifestyle thanks to its world-class suction power and AI-based cleaning services capable of automatically optimizing to each environment,” said Junwha Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of the Customer Experience Team of Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “With the Bespoke Jet AI, Samsung is delivering an intelligent cordless stick vacuum that empowers users to undertake their lifestyles in premium fashion.”

Samsung’s Most Powerful and Longest-Running Cordless Stick Vacuum Yet

The Bespoke Jet AI features the powerful HexaJet Motor which, with up to 280W of suction power and a maximum consumption power of 730W, makes it Samsung’s most powerful vacuum motor to date. This ultra lightweight motor, weighing in at only 150g, provides a comfortable cleaning experience while still providing a 25% increase in suction power compared to the previous model,⁵ as well as a motor efficiency of 52%.

In order to allow users to clean for longer without stopping to charge, the Bespoke Jet AI offers up to 100 minutes of usage, the longest single battery runtime of any Samsung cordless stick vacuum. Its 4,500mAh battery features 80% more capacity than the previous model and has been optimized to retain 70% of its performance for up to 500 cycles.⁶

The Bespoke Jet AI also features a selection of brushes and other accessories. The Active Dual Brush offers efficient cleaning on all types of floors and built-in LED lighting to highlight dust in dark spots, while the Slim LED Brush+ features a highly maneuverable design as well as LED lighting in order to effectively clean trickier areas. For more convenient storage of the device and its brushes, the Accessory Cradle allows users to store their device wherever they want.

AI-Based Cleaning for an Exceptional Intelligent Cleaning Experience

With its all-new AI mode that harnesses Samsung’s AI Optimum Tech, the Bespoke Jet AI provides a more effective cleaning experience while catering to a diverse range of environments. The Bespoke Jet AI is the first cordless stick vacuum cleaner to feature an AI verification from UL Solutions, a leading independent safety science organization. Its AI Cleaning Mode allows it to determine floor type in order to provide both optimized cleaning and maximum battery efficiency.

With AI Cleaning Mode, the Bespoke Jet AI will first detect the brush load it has encountered through its suction motion controller, as well as the air pressure through its pressure sensors. This data will then be analyzed in order to classify the floor type it is placed on, and the resulting algorithm will be automatically applied in order to provide the optimal suction power and brushroll speed.⁷

The Bespoke Jet AI’s AI Cleaning Mode is capable of reducing battery consumption by up to 14% and can boost maneuverability by up to 6% when used with the Active Dual Brush. When used with the Slim LED Brush+, battery consumption can be reduced by up to 21%, with maneuverability boosted by up to 8%.⁸

In addition to the Bespoke Jet AI’s AI Cleaning Mode, SmartThings and Smart Wi-Fi connectivity let users customize their vacuum and its functions while maintaining peak performance through the smart self-diagnosis function, providing more effective cleaning experiences.

More Hygienic Experiences With an Upgraded All-in-One Clean Station

The Bespoke Jet AI’s upgraded All-in-One Clean Station harnesses Air Pulse technology to automatically empty the dustbin for quicker and more hygienic cleaning. When the dustbin is being emptied, the All-in-One Clean Station’s Air Spin Edge technology spins the Spinning Cyclone at a blade rate of up to 1,000 RPM to drain waste, including any remaining hair that may be stuck in the dustbin’s grille.

The enhanced All-in-One Clean Station can automatically shut its cover after every disposal and offers more powerful dust management performance with a 99.999% Multi-layered Filtration System for trapping fine dust and an improved hair removal rate of 99%⁹ for more efficient dustbin emptying.

Why Is Family Hub+ Bigger?

Family Hub+ features a 32-inch full HD touchscreen that is 2.1x bigger than the previous 21.5-inch display. Now, what is the reasoning behind a bigger screen?

Adapting to the New Normal

The pandemic has forced many of us to spend more time at home, leading to a surge in creative ways to utilize our living spaces. The kitchen, for example, has evolved beyond a space for cooking and eating to become a multifunctional hub for family communication, hobbies and other everyday needs. As a result, our relationship with kitchen appliances, such as the fridge, has also changed. The refrigerator is the perfect partner that fits the modern role of the kitchen and has become a platform that provides services we need to align with these new lifestyles. We require more from our appliances than ever before. Bigger Screen, Better Attention to Detail

Bigger screens mean greater attention to detail. For instance, the 32-inch display needed to be accessible to both children and wheelchair users, so the bottom portion of the display was positioned to be mindful of these users’ needs. The top of the display was raised, but the Accessible Screen feature lets users tap the home button twice to bring down the top portion of the screen. The panel surrounding the screen was carefully fitted to make sure the details on the edges were smooth. The mic at the bottom was also moved upwards so that every detail we need to see — or what we don’t — is precisely designed into the form.

How Is Family Hub+ More User-Friendly?

A great amount of thought was put into creating a refrigerator design that could harmonize with its surroundings and other appliances.

Adding Tangible Taste to Every Touch

A wide variety of panel materials are available to choose from, allowing users to design a refrigerator that feels best to their touch. The satin glass is velvety in texture, offering both comfort and glow, while the glam glass brightens any environment with its high gloss surface. Metal embodies Millennial sentiments through a subtle, monotone finish. Panels are easily interchangeable¹ so that a single refrigerator base can support a wide range of styles.

Visual Comfort

Both from the inside and outside, the refrigerator intends to instill a sense of cohesiveness that would be found in a beautiful piece of standalone furniture. The inner mood light² is positioned to put more emphasis on the stored food within. Lighting is spread out evenly through the insides of the refrigerator to give visual comfort and illuminate the innermost parts of the appliance.

A bigger screen means there’s more content to consume, allowing every moment spent with Family Hub+ to be filled with joy.

We often pass by our refrigerator throughout the day — but the door remains mostly closed, leaving an empty space that could be put to better use. With Family Hub+, we can transform that blank canvas to become a source of creativity by hanging up a beautiful piece of art. Working in collaboration with renowned galleries and artists, Samsung offers a diverse selection of Bespoke Atelier³ pieces to suit a wide range of tastes. These works of art are thoughtfully organized by year, theme and movement, making it easy to find the perfect style for any kitchen.

The Bespoke Atelier pieces can serve as beautiful artwork on their own or even as part of an in-house exhibition. When new galleries open, invitation letters are sent right to your fridge, which can be accepted and enjoyed through the hub display. Seamless Experiences

In today’s busy world, families need a constant source of entertainment and information in the spaces where they gather. That’s why Family Hub+ features a larger display, allowing families to multitask while enjoying their favorite content. With Samsung TV Plus,⁴ one of Samsung’s most popular apps, viewers can now move the screen to the top, middle or bottom of the display to ensure it’s at eye level. The Picture in Picture feature allows users to browse the web or search for recipes while still playing their favorite show or movie in the background.

Family Hub+ is not just limited to TV. Mobile content can be streamed via Smart View without compromising screen ratios. This feature lets users share content on their mobile devices with each other in real time. Families can pull up photos on the Family Hub+ display through the Gallery app or Google Photos to showcase them on the spot. The SmartThings Cooking service provides recipes based on the available food and cooking appliances in your kitchen. It also sends optimized cooking directions to your appliances to make sure the temperatures and cooking durations are just right. The recipe option, one of the features of the SmartThings Cooking service, gives you a snapshot of the steps needed to create each dish. Cooking on your own is no longer daunting with the hub.

Now, you can easily reorder your household favorites with the click of a button on your refrigerator door via Amazon Your Essentials. Simply look up the item through the Your Essentials button on the home screen to see the product details. Shopping through your refrigerator is now easier than ever.

While the refrigerator has served as merely a place to store food, the fridge door has long been a source of family communication, whether adorned with sticky notes, magnets or the latest masterpieces from our kids. With Family Hub+, Samsung sought to capture this essence while crafting a product suited for the modern kitchen. Samsung’s theme for this year’s event, “The Bespoke Life,” emphasizes a more eco-conscious, hyper-connected and personalized way of living. The company’s showcase also includes a pop-up space created in collaboration with the Italian creative studio brand, TOILETPAPER, to convey how Bespoke refrigerators cater to various lifestyles.

Distinct Styles, Shared Values

Originally founded in 2010 as a magazine run by artist Maurizio Cattelan and photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari, TOILETPAPER has since expanded into a product and furniture brand known for its unique design aesthetic. TOILETPAPER is known for its use of vibrant colors and pop art-inspired imagery; highly original designs such as “Lipsticks,” which features outstretched arms holding lipstick tubes, exemplify its signature style. Over time, these designs earned TOILETPAPER a strong following among global art enthusiasts who continue to adore the brand’s distinctive style.

“TOILETPAPER has always loved the idea of applying images to everyday objects rather than restricting them to the inside of a gallery or museum,” said TOILETPAPER Art Director Micol Talso. “That’s why we were thrilled when Samsung asked us to think of a design to apply to their Bespoke refrigerator panels. We thought it was an amazing opportunity for us to challenge ourselves in a new medium.”

TOILETPAPER’s design philosophy, which puts a unique spin on everyday objects, closely aligns with Bespoke refrigerators’ personalized appearance and overall experience, which not only caters to users’ needs on the exterior but the interior as well.

Eye-Catching and Elegant

Samsung’s collaboration with TOILETPAPER includes a total of four Bespoke refrigerator panel designs. To maximize impact, the brands chose to personalize the front panels with existing TOILETPAPER imagery — including such iconic designs as “Lipsticks,” “Magic Mirror,” “Roses with Eyes,” and “Dessert Lady” — resulting in an eye-catching and elegant collection that is distinguished by its bold use of color. Vibrant Launch Events in TOILETPAPER Home

Samsung’s Fuorisalone 2023 showcase also included a series of special events that offered guests an up-close look at Bespoke’s limited-edition panel collection.

TOILETPAPER’s Milan headquarters, TOILETPAPER Home, hosted two interactive events. Placed in various rooms throughout the building, including the kitchen and bedroom, the Bespoke refrigerator designs seamlessly blended with the space’s striking interior. Guests were captivated by the combination of functional appliances and artistic expression, which resulted in a pair of unforgettable events.

The first, held on April 17, saw Talso introduce Samsung and TOILETPAPER’s collaboration to global media. The event also included a cooking show from the famous Italian chef, Marco Assaggia. On April 20, TOILETPAPER Home was host to a “Fridge Party” for global media and influencers. The event offered guests an opportunity to experience Bespoke refrigerators in a fun and engaging setting with music provided by famous DJs.

In addition, Samsung and TOILETPAPER’s new, limited-edition panel designs can also be viewed at TOILETPAPER Living. This one-of-a-kind accommodation will be available to reserve soon and will offer guests an opportunity to experience a wide range of Bespoke home appliances, including the Bespoke Induction Range, Dishwasher, Oven and more.

Jinny Jung, Vice President, Samsung Electronics, expressed her delight at collaborating with a brand whose “unique designs continue to attract attention in Korea and around the world.” Adding that Samsung is pleased to have TOILETPAPER as Bespoke refrigerators’ first partner of the year, Jung explained that the collaboration promotes Bespoke’s core value of offering more consumers more options that cater to their unique tastes.

Designer Seungji Mun, well-known for his minimalist, functional, and eco-conscious industrial designs, and designer Hosuk Jang, a space and interior designer renowned for catering to a variety of different lifestyles, brought their unique design philosophies to the booth’s Sustainability and Design Zones respectively.

Samsung Newsroom sat down with the artists to learn more about their exhibits and the background behind the collaboration.

Connecting With Nature and Sustainability Through Bespoke — Seungji Mun

Born and raised on South Korea’s Jeju Island, Mun established his first atelier in Copenhagen, Denmark and found inspiration in both Korean and Danish aesthetics for his designs. He has had numerous experiences working on projects related to sustainability, and is known for his eco-conscious designs “Economical Chair” and “Four Brothers.” The Sustainability Zone that Mun worked on is titled “We Breathe.”

Q. After collaborating with Samsung and Bespoke appliances on designs like “Just Cabinet” and “My Island,” what motivates you to continue working with Bespoke?

Mun: The Just Cabinet design was my first project with Samsung Bespoke. We approached the “bespoke” concept of the Bespoke refrigerator as a furniture piece rather than a kitchen wall, integrating it seamlessly into the design of the furniture. Our aim with this project was to showcase how kitchen appliances can transcend the traditional confines of the kitchen and become a part of other areas, such as the living room, to be part of a different story in people’s lives. This project was a great opportunity and kickstarted various other collaboration projects with Samsung.

Q. A recurring theme in your designs is the need to coexist with nature. In your opinion, what makes sustainable designs — and specifically eco-conscious appliances — so important today?

Mun: In the world we live in today, going green is no longer a special matter but rather a necessity. It is now one of the most important factors that must be considered as we move forward with our designs. Therefore, I believe that designing with sustainability and eco-consciousness in mind should be the norm rather than an exception. In addition, I believe that home appliances are most closely associated with our lives, so it seems inevitable to me that products that reflect the values of sustainability are seeing a rise in production.

Q. Could you tell us more about the latest collaboration “We Breathe” and what it says about sustainable living?

Mun: In “We Breathe,” we aimed to create a design that merged the front-facing side of our appliances and the side of our homes that we see every day with the dark and hidden interior of those same appliances. By doing so, we have created the visual image of these appliances resting and storing their energy in the same space that we also live and breathe in. Also, as most of the components of the exhibition are made from recycled materials, we strived to convey the message of sustainability.

Q. Bespoke Life’s sustainability philosophy is about making sustainability a natural part of daily life. How did you incorporate Bespoke’s philosophy into the design?

Mun: Bespoke Home introduced the concept of designing one’s interior with a wide variety of color choices and created a new kind of demand in a market of predominantly white home appliances. Furthermore, Bespoke conveys values of sustainability through changeable panels which extends the lifespan of the products. “We Breathe” also reflects the Bespoke vision through the reduction of wasted resources by utilizing recycled materials while also maintaining an aesthetically pleasing design.

True Customization for Any Household and Individual — Hosuk Jang

After working as a graphic designer in New York, Jang founded Hosting House for the space design and lifestyle industries upon his return to Korea. Today, Jang is a leading figure in his field with a host of accolades under his belt, including winning Designer’s Choice of the Year at the 2018 Seoul Living Design Fair. The Design Zone Jang spearheaded is titled “Framed.”

Q. Your work is rooted in catering to and enhancing various lifestyles. In your opinion, what makes lifestyle-centric design so important today?

Jang: I believe it’s important for people to have the freedom to pursue designs catered to their individualistic lifestyle. Creating design options that encourage users to develop their own styles is what’s driving my work today.

Q. As a designer, what possibilities do Bespoke appliances create in terms of catering to various lifestyles and interiors?

Jang: Bespoke home appliances have opened a new era for home appliance design by offering customization with a wide variety of colors, materials and even layout configurations.

Taking this a step further, new Bespoke products have been released recently that empower users to partake in more sustainable lifestyles at home. As sustainability becomes top of mind for many people with climate change, features that can help reduce the environmental impact have become essential to consumers.

Q. You previously partnered with Samsung and Bespoke appliances on designs such as “The Laundry Bar” and “Garden of Air.” What is it about Bespoke that inspires you to continue collaborating?

Jang: When we were first commissioned by Samsung Home Appliances in 2019 for the Bespoke Project, the first thing that we felt was that they truly wanted something new.

For our part, we thought we could integrate the refrigerator to become part of the kitchen décor instead of just decorating it as a separate unit. The result was a wall with modular picture frames that users can rearrange themselves. Later with the Laundry Bar project for the Bespoke Grande AI, we took a similar approach, integrating the washing machine into the wall with the door decorated to blend seamlessly into the space.

We’ve been excited to have had the opportunity to work on various Bespoke projects with Samsung. And for this Fuorisalone project, the idea was to showcase these Bespoke concepts outside of Korea, for the first time, with Milan as the stage.

Q. How does “Framed” combine lifestyle-centric designs with Bespoke’s true customization?

Jang: We’ve taken our “Framed” project, which was created in 2019 to celebrate the launch of Bespoke, and the Laundry Bar, our 2020’s concept created to celebrate the launch of Bespoke Grande AI and refreshed them for Fuorisalone 2023.

For the design elements of “Framed,” we’ve mixed modern luxury with classic design. Such design choices for “Framed” were my take on interior décor that is unhindered by boundaries, expressing my creativity through various techniques and devices. This also reflects Bespoke’s vision of true customization, highlighting that interior design is not just for professionals but something that anyone can achieve according to their taste, personality and lifestyle.

Q. What advice would you give consumers who are interested in enhancing their interiors with Bespoke home appliances?

Jang: I believe that the biggest advantage of Samsung Bespoke Home appliances is that they can harmonize with other appliances in any space. Or, if you’re looking to change your décor, look at Bespoke as a blank canvas on which you can explore new ways of creative expression.

No matter personal taste or the variety of sizes, configurations and materials, your Bespoke designs can easily keep pace as your lifestyle evolves.

On April 17, Fuorisalone 2023, the world’s largest design and furniture exhibition, opened in Milan, Italy.

At their 700m² Fuorisalone booth, Samsung Electronics held their exhibition under the concept of “Bespoke Home, Bespoke Life,” featuring collaborations with celebrated Korean designers Seungji Mun and Hosuk Jang. The exhibition took the core message of “Bespoke Home,” which is about providing consumers the ability to choose personalized home appliances that suit their tastes, one step further with the new core message of “Bespoke Life,” which is about advancing home appliances to include eco-consciouness and hyperconnectivity, all with an artistic touch.

The “We Breathe” zone of Samsung’s exhibition, developed in collaboration with designer Seungji Mun, showcased to visitors that core theme of the “Bespoke Life” concept, sustainability, and the “Framed” zone, developed by Hosuk Jang, embodied the value of personalization that consumers can enjoy when choosing a Bespoke appliance that is able to reflect their own unique personalities and preferences. Both these zones attracted a high turnout from visitors, as did the limited-edition Bespoke refrigerator exhibition created in partnership with renowned Italian creative studio TOILETPAPER with Samsung being their first Korean home appliance brand collaborator.

Read on to get a feel of the lively atmosphere present at Samsung’s Fuorisalone 2023 booth, wherein the company showcased its latest home solutions and sustainable smart lifestyle approach as realized through their home appliances.

“We Breathe”: Integrating Sustainability Into Daily Life With Seungji Mun

Upon entering the exhibition hall, the “We Breathe” zone, created in collaboration with designer Seunji Mun, caught the eye of visitors with its display that emphasizes sustainability as a core value of Bespoke Life. This zone was made to look like a green space, and was decorated with not only Bespoke products but also with original, eye-catching designs from Seungji Mun.

The special flooring and variety of sculptures that filled the space were made using disposed fishing nets and other recycled materials, conveying Samsung’s dedication to protecting the environment and its ongoing eco-conscious efforts. “Unlike other, more ordinary booths, it was interesting to encounter this fresh space feeling, almost like we were in a forest,” noted one visitor to the exhibition. “We definitely felt Samsung’s sincerity in their eco-conscious efforts as displayed through the arrangement of Bespoke products on show.”

Hyperconnected Experiences With Energy Efficiency and AI at Their Core

Moving on from the “We Breathe” zone, the next stop for visitors to Samsung’s booth was an open space dedicated to showcasing the company’s efforts into developing innovative eco-concious and artificial intelligence (AI)-based technologies.

On one wall sat an infographic designed to showcase how Samsung has implemented eco-consicous technologies into the entire product lifecycle, from resourcing and production through to transporation and usage. Visitors could also learn more about SmartThings Energy’s AI Saving Mode and the energy savings it is able to bring about through each of Samsung’s home appliances, further showcasing the company’s efforts towards sustainable living.

Furthermore, new Bespoke appliances featuring enhanced AI technologies drew particular attention from those visitors interested in user convenience. Numerous innovative Bespoke products, including the Bespoke Refrigerator Family Hub+ with a 32-inch large screen, the Bespoke Infinite Line wine refrigerator, equipped with an Auto Open Door function that opens with just a light touch, and the Bespoke Jet and its All-in-one Clean Station, able to help with cleaning from start to finish, caught the eye of many patrons.

In this zone, a space was set up for visitors to experience the connectivity of SmartThings through the Map View function, which is supported on Samsung’s TVs and monitor screens. Through SmartThings, users are able to easily manage the status and power usage of all home appliances connected throughout the house. Visitors to this space were able to learn all about the hyperconnectivity and convenience offered by this service that manages all home appliances from a single platform via SmartThings.

“Framed”: Creating Unique Spaces Through Personalized Appliances

The Samsung booth’s “Framed” zone, a collaborative exhibition developed with designer Hosuk Jang, was designed as a space that is imbued with the core philosophy of the Bespoke offering and also to provide a different atmosphere to visitors compared to the zone that came before it. By capturing the Bespoke philosophy of personalized home appliances that cater to personal tastes and taking the appearance of a lounge bar reminiscent of a luxurious European social club, the “Framed” zone conveyed an elegant atmosphere to visitors and served as a photo zone for many.

This exhibit featured Bespoke products placed in spaces within framed walls, giving them the appearance of blending in with the surroundings seamlessly. Bespoke products including the Bespoke AI Grande, Bespoke Jet AI and the Bespoke Cube Air were placed in these ‘framed’ spaces to harmonize with the space, showcasing the true essence of Bespoke’s personalized home appliances and garnering praise from visitors.

In addition, drawings of bottles, vases and flowers drawn personally by designer Hosuk Jang himself were displayed on the other side of the exhibition, conveying the importance of personal lifestyle choices that both Samsung and the designer hold in high regard.

Where Creativity Meets Technology: Samsung’s Limited-Edition TOILETPAPER Collaboration

Last but certainly not least, the final zone of Samsung’s Fuorisalone exhibition served as a space to showcase the company’s unique collaboration with renowned Italian creative studio TOILETPAPER, the first of its kind between a Korean home appliance brand and TOILETPAPER.

Founded by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan and photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari, TOILETPAPER is a creative studio that started life as an art magazine, and is famous around the world for its unique and surreal designs. Samsung is the first Korean home appliance brand to collaborate with TOILETPAPER, and worked with the studio to produce a limited-edition Bespoke refrigerator at Fuorisalone 2023 with panels featuring iconic TOILETPAPER designs such as Dessert Lady, Lipsticks, Magic Mirror and Roses with Eyes.

“I was initially surprised by the collaboration between TOILETPAPER and the Bespoke refrigerator lineup,” noted a visitor to the exhibition. “However, I found the colorful designs very inspiring and they motivated me to purchase home appliances that match my own tastes in the future.” These limited-edition Bespoke refrigerators in collaboration with TOILETPAPER will be made available in markets around the world sequentially.

A separate Bespoke Selfie zone also drew in crowds as it allowed visitors to experience MyBespoke, wherein visitors could take selfies of themselves and send them directly to their Bespoke refrigerator.

From Production to Recycling, Sustainability for a Better Planet

Samsung’s vision for a sustainable future, one that incorporates sustainability further into everyday life, is clear to visitors throughout the entire “Bespoke Home, Bespoke Life” experience.

The first exhibit, Seungji Mun’s “We Breathe,” places appliances including the Bespoke AI Washer and Dryer and Bespoke BMF¹ Refrigerator into a space composed mainly of recycled materials such as discarded plastic² and fishing nets. The exhibit portrays the appliances as “sleeping” while conserving power to showcase SmartThings’ energy-saving technology.

The “Everyday Sustainability” exhibit focuses on Samsung’s efforts to support sustainability throughout the entire product lifecycle. From manufacturing and distribution to usage and disposal, Samsung continues to drive eco-conscious efforts further across every facet of its operations. This includes reducing resource use and carbon emissions³ during the sourcing stage, developing eco-conscious packaging for distribution, implementing intelligent energy-saving technologies for the usage stage and making it easier for users to recycle their products once they reach the end of their lifecycle.

A Better, Smarter Lifestyle Through Connectivity

In addition to highlighting innovations that cater to consumers’ desire for greater sustainability, Samsung’s booth is also spotlighting SmartThings’ ability to transform the way consumers interact with their appliances — by fostering seamless experiences and bringing calm to their interconnected world.

The “Connected Experience” exhibit features the types of seamless and intuitive experiences that become possible by combining Bespoke appliances’ hyperconnectivity with SmartThings’ automation. The interactive exhibit demonstrates how Samsung’s updated lineup of SmartThings services — including SmartThings Cooking, Clothing Care, Energy, Air Care, Pet Care and Home Care — streamlines users’ routines by making everyday tasks more convenient.

In particular, it outlines how SmartThings’ energy-saving solutions help users manage their energy usage and reduce their carbon footprint and energy bills. This includes providing up to 15% more savings for compatible refrigerators, up to 20% for compatible air conditioners and up to 70% for compatible washers for courses operating in AI Energy Mode with Ecobubble.⁴

Taking this a step further, SmartThings Energy manages energy production and saving of an entire house, enabling the true vision of a “Net Zero Home.” To this end, Samsung is expanding partnerships with European energy companies, such as “SMA Solar Technology” and “Passiv UK.”

Experience Ultimate Personalization Through Bespoke Design

The collaborations that Samsung showcased at Fuorisalone 2023 redefine the boundaries of Bespoke design. These partnerships and design enhancements reaffirm Samsung’s commitment to offering consumers the ultimate in personalization.

Hosuk Jang’s “Framed” is an eye-catching exhibit that cleverly blends Bespoke’s design ethos with that of a European social club by incorporating art frames into Bespoke refrigerator panels. The result is an exhibit that encourages visitors to visualize how they would express their individuality and personalize their interior with Bespoke products.

The booth’s “Bespoke Gallery” invites visitors to experience personalizing their refrigerator with MyBespoke⁵ and showcases refrigerator panels designed in collaboration with the creative studio and magazine brand, TOILETPAPER. The limited-edition panels include a total of four unique designs: “Dessert Lady,” “Lipsticks,” “Magic Mirror” and “Roses with Eyes.”

Samsung Electronics today revealed the company’s collaborative design work with TOILETPAPER, the creative studio founded by artist Maurizio Cattelan and photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari. Unveiled at Fuorisalone during the 2023 Milan Design Week, the collaboration brings TOILETPAPER’s unique and disruptive art style to limited-edition Samsung Bespoke refrigerator panels.

Central to the Samsung Bespoke philosophy is the aim to push the boundaries of white appliance designs to introduce new modes of personal self-expression through customization. In many ways, TOILETPAPER and Samsung have a similar creative vision, which encourages self-expression and embraces experimental design concepts. For Bespoke design, this comes in the form of personalization and customization, while TOILETPAPER specializes in unconventional, avant-garde art styles that make bold statements about life.

The four new Bespoke panel designs that Samsung is introducing in collaboration with TOILETPAPER are titled “Dessert Lady”, “Lipsticks”, “Magic Mirror” and “Roses with Eyes.” The “Lipsticks” and “Roses with Eyes” designs will be available for Bespoke Bottom Mounted Freezer (BMF) models while the “Magic Mirror” and “Dessert Lady” designs will be available for 1-Door and 4-Door refrigerator models. These limited-edition TOILETPAPER refrigerator panel designs will be available for purchase for global markets starting in the first half of the year.

At Fuorisalone 2023, these four Bespoke refrigerator panel designs will be on display for visitors to experience up close at the Samsung booth at Art Point Superstudio Più Via Tortona, Milano, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. April 18 – 22 and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on April 23.

The new designs are on display for Milan Design Week at TOILETPAPER Home, located at Via Giuseppe Balzaretti, 4, and at TOILETPAPER Apartment, located next door. From April 18 – 23 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., visitors will be able to explore the latest Samsung products and the collaborative design pieces with TOILETPAPER through pop-up displays at TOILETPAPER Home. Guests staying at TOILETPAPER Apartment, a newly opened hospitality facility, will also be able to see one of the new Bespoke refrigerator panel designs which will remain even after Fuorisalone has concluded.

The Bespoke TMF refrigerator’s Optimal Fresh+ compartment offers four distinct modes of refrigeration and can keep food fresh for up to twice as long as standard cooling.⁶

Located in an independently controlled drawer installed at the top of the fridge, the four unique temperature modes — Fridge, Meat & Fish, Soft Freeze and Power Cool — are designed to store different food types efficiently and optimally.

The Fridge mode is ideal for preserving fresh foods and frequently used daily items like dairy and deli foods. As part of its showcase, Samsung offered a glimpse at what the future may hold for the home appliance industry through an illuminating panel discussion. The panel was moderated by Pamela McNally, SVP of Marketing and Digital at the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA), with panelists including Shane Higby, Vice President for Home Appliance Product Marketing at Samsung Electronics America, Gary So, Vice President of Demand Generation at Samsung Electronics America and Geraldine Morrison, Executive Director of Dacor.

The panelists took the stage as part of KBIS’s NEXT Stage event, a showcase for leading kitchen and bath industry experts to discuss the latest trends affecting the industry today and what they expect to be influencing the industry tomorrow.

Charting the Future of the Home Appliance Landscape

Pamela McNally The appliance landscape has changed significantly over the past few years. How has Samsung been adapting to these changes?

Shane Higby It certainly has changed, and I would humbly suggest that Samsung has been leading some of that change in a few key areas. The first is sustainability, the second is connectivity and the third is design.

Sustainability is a very critical corporate initiative for us. Approximately 260 Samsung appliances are ENERGY STAR^® certified, 43 of which received have received the “Most Efficient” award.¹ Recently, SmartThings Energy was given the first-ever Smart Home Energy Management Systems (SHEMS) certification, which we’re very proud of. In the area of connectivity, over 80% of our appliances are connected, which includes Family Hub.

In the area of design, our Bespoke lineup offers consumers a choice — one that didn’t really exist in the home appliance space previously — to bring new colors and materials into the kitchen. This emphasis on customizable designs empowers them to personalize their kitchen to suit their lifestyle.

McNally Could you share more about Samsung’s approach to design in today’s home appliance market?

Gary So What we’ve been seeing is that, in the last couple of years, consumers have been spending a lot more time at home. And in many ways, their relationships with appliances have changed dramatically. Pre-pandemic, the approach to design was a lot more functionally driven and a lot more utilitarian. Post-pandemic, designs have moved on to become much more about expression. Rather than just products to cook and clean with, consumers are seeing appliances as an extension of who they are and their design aesthetic.

What’s interesting is that we’re seeing this shift toward customization permeate all age groups. Certainly for millennial home buyers, customization is a lot more natural, but we’re also seeing older consumers embrace the trend. We think this adoption is in large part due to the wide range of options Bespoke provides.

With the Bespoke Design Simulator, consumers can choose custom color panels that open up design possibilities, whether it’s a clean, one-toned option or a more expressive option with multiple tones. We also just announced MyBespoke, which allows users to print their own custom pictures onto panels for a truly personalized experience. Customization in terms of design is truly endless with Bespoke, and we think that this trend is here to stay.

We’ve also noticed that following the introduction of Bespoke, there’s been a challenge to the traditional notion of appliances that are all matching with each other. Users don’t feel the need to have all stainless or all black appliances at home. In fact, many of our customers are using Bespoke refrigerators as standalone statement pieces in the kitchen and mixing and matching other products for a more expressive look.

Furthermore, with our home spaces serving so many different functions today, Bespoke customers know that having a personalized home design means the space is always fitting no matter the time of day, serving as a place for breakfast in the morning with family, an office to take video calls in during the day and then back to dinner time with the family at night.

Importantly, we’re still able to combine functionality with aesthetics. Whether it’s an internal beverage center or recessed door handles, Bespoke offers a simple, clean design with a premium feel that fits into any environment — traditional or contemporary. That’s the future: appliances that can reflect personal aesthetics, giving consumers a way to create a design that says something about themselves.

McNally Shane, let’s circle back to your earlier insight regarding Samsung and the connected home.

Higby The connected home is not something new; I’ve mentioned that some 80% of our appliances are connected in some way. What we’re trying to do with connectivity is simplifying it as much as possible for consumers because it can come across as complex and daunting. For example, when you’re doing laundry, our connected laundry appliances can send you a notification when the wash is done and it’s time to switch it to the dryer. You can even schedule the laundry machine to start at a later time, so that when you come home from work, the clothes have not been sitting there damp all day long. Other use cases include starting your dishwasher at night if you don’t want to hear it running. With ranges, you can preheat them while you’re at work, so when you get home, it’s ready to cook dinner.

We also have some great functionality with SmartThings Home Care. Our appliances can give you notifications through SmartThings if they sense something might be wrong: overdue maintenance, an open door on an appliance or something else. It’s extra peace of mind.

McNally So far, we’ve discussed the changes in approaches to design and connectivity within the industry. How do these areas apply to luxury appliances?

Geraldine Morrison Design is paramount for the luxury consumer. At Dacor, we work with the world’s top designers to ensure that we’re using the best materials, finishes and truly the best everything in our products because that’s the standard our customers expect. This enables customers to bring their design visions to life. It’s really about preference: whether it’s something clean and recessed that disappears into the space or something extravagant that makes a statement, we have all the options available.

With regards to connectivity, Dacor appliances benefit by being on Samsung’s SmartThings platform. Consumers want to know the best way to use their appliances but also keep track of what they’re doing. That’s what we deliver with Dacor.

Our wine cellars, for example, can send notifications about the status of your wine, and our refrigerators can tell you what’s inside your refrigerator at any time using built-in cameras. It’s about providing intuitive, meaningful innovations that allow customers to enjoy an elevated lifestyle with the freedom to get onto doing other things they want to do.

McNally Finally, I’d love to hear what’s new in 2023 for both Samsung and Dacor, as well as what you feel the future landscape of appliances will look like.

Higby In the Bespoke portfolio of products, there are a few new things coming in terms of refrigeration and otherwise. In refrigeration, we’re introducing a Bespoke Side-by-Side refrigerator for consumers looking for a premium look in a lower-budget option. It will offer a new Auto Open Door, making it more convenient to open and close the larger doors. Also, new is the 32” Family Hub refrigerator. The new Family Hub features an FHD, bezel-less screen that’s twice as big as the previous model but still blends seamlessly into the appliance. Taking advantage of that new screen, users can do more at once, such as using the new picture-in-picture feature to watch videos on YouTube while creating a shopping list.

There’s also a brand-new wall oven coming out with a first-of-its-kind camera inside so you can monitor your cooking and baking. By pairing the camera with AI technology, the oven can recognize what’s inside and recommend cooking settings accordingly. Users can even share their cooking videos on social media with their friends thanks to SmartThings integration.

We also have other products for the kitchen and the rest of the home in the works, so stay tuned.

Morrison With Dacor customers, we’re seeing a lot of creativity regarding how appliances are being used. Some of our users may have two kitchen setups at home, one for regular use and one for show for special occasions — or one for “go” and one for “show,” as we like to say. You might have a wine cellar in the kitchen but a wine dispenser in the closet built-in for convenience. It’s really about meeting changing needs as we spend more time at home.

Luxury consumers have high standards, and the focus is versatility — they want that one ultimate, heavy-duty appliance that can do it all. Added to that, they want appliances that can provide precision outcomes, be it baking cookies or baking a turkey. Another trend in luxury is that bigger is better. We’re seeing a lot of interest in bigger capacities, as because we’re doing a lot of things at home, we need more space to do them in.

So, with our Transitional Line, we’re introducing a new 48-inch-wide range that offers the largest capacity with a full 36-inch cavity on one side that’s big enough to cook two turkeys. We’re also introducing a 48-inch built-in refrigerator to the Transitional Line with advanced features including 3D LED Lighting, a full metal interior, precision cooling and Fresh Zone + so that users can convert the space into a fridge or freezer depending on their needs. It also includes a new ice-making feature that makes whisky ball ice as well as ice cubes, which is a really unique feature and a perfect example of flexibility blended with elevated features.

KBIS’s NEXT Stage event provided the perfect platform for the panel of experts to discuss the future of home appliances and the trends that are shaping them. As trends shift toward a more flexible home environment, Samsung and Dacor’s innovative approaches to appliance design are providing ways for consumers to personalize and elevate their home spaces through customizable aesthetics, intuitive connectivity and sustainability.

The Bespoke Home Virtual is a 3D home appliance experience in a virtual reality (VR) space using advanced digital twin technology. It allows users to roam around interacting with them to get a feel for how Bespoke appliances would look inside their home in various configurations.

Bespoke Home Virtual, unlike similar interior VR experiences, allows users to freely explore locations as if they were in a video game with a whole new level of freedom. While in the past, VR spaces were limited to certain sections being rendered, the Bespoke Home Virtual uses a new technology that opens the entire space so users can see from all angles without limitations. While exploring, users can zoom in on key points of products to compare appliances in detail through direct interaction. What’s more, the Real-Time Rendering technology being utilized presents realistic light renders that mimic real-world light behavior, bringing the scene to life like never before.

The Kitchen & Bath Industry Show 2023 attendees got to go hands-on, through a docent service, with Bespoke Home Virtual for a truly immersive experience. Modelled to reflect an average American home, the 3D environment offered consumers an easy and intuitive way to experience Bespoke products and create different moods in the home with customizations. Throughout the event, the whole experience was also simultaneously shared on Samsung’s 4K 140-inch display, The Wall, at the Samsung Booth.

Users first got to select from three distinct interior styles, including Modern, Transitional Light and Transitional Dark, then were free to roam around the fully decorated space. Cycling through three interior designs, users were able to get a deeper understanding of how the appliances would look matched with different textures such as marble backsplashes, wood or stone tile floors and light or dark walls.

More than a simple walkthrough, attendees were encouraged to get up close and experience a catered suite of Bespoke products, including refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines and dryers as well as inductions and ovens. Users were able to open the doors on the units to check out features such as the built-in water dispenser inside the fridge as well as the glide pan in the oven while swapping through vibrant colors and detailed finishes. Together, the realistic interior and exterior renditions allowed users to fully enjoy the amazing features that make Bespoke products truly bespoke.

For this year’s KBIS, Samsung enabled users to interactively experience Bespoke using a breakthrough, immersive 3D technology, providing consumers a brand-new way to go hands-on with the latest Samsung home appliances.

They can also peruse the full range of different Bespoke appliance finishes and colors capable of fitting seamlessly into any home design concept.

Alongside this display is the Bespoke Home zone, where visitors can learn more about all the latest Bespoke appliances and the full extent of their customizable features.

Furthermore, visitors can also enjoy a first-hand experience of the MyBespoke custom printing service. On display at this area are several possibilities of how personalized images can be used as front panel decoration, showcased on the latest Bespoke French Door Refrigerators.

Moving on, in the showcase’s SmartThings Home zone, smart home systems are taking center stage. Visitors are provided with a closer look at how SmartThings is expanding the use of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions to provide consumers with convenient appliance monitoring and management right from the updated Full HD (FHD) Family Hub display. Furthermore, for even more in-depth experiences of the full Bespoke offering, the Line-up area features the complete range of all the latest Bespoke appliances.

The final stop on a visitor’s Samsung showcase tour, situated just beyond the Bespoke zones, is the Dacor section. Samsung Electronics today showcased innovations that raise the bar for sustainable, smart and personalized living at the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Bespoke appliances have quickly grown in popularity since they were introduced to the U.S. market in 2021, with Bespoke refrigerators as the centerpiece. The ever-expanding line now includes full kitchen packages, laundry and floor care products.

This year, Samsung is offering Bespoke customization to the built-in cooking category and also introducing new refrigerator models. With the new additions, Samsung aims to continue to help make energy savings a seamless part of everyday life, enhance SmartThings’ connected services in more ways and empower more personalized experiences in 2023.

By integrating energy efficiency and connected technology into more appliances and in more ways, Samsung is helping make sustainability a seamless part of daily life.

At KBIS, Samsung will showcase efforts to enhance sustainability throughout the product life cycle — from production to distribution, use and disposal — and highlight the added energy savings that come with its SmartThings Energy¹ service. The service delivers easy-to-understand information about your smart home energy usage, as well as tips to help you save more power. Its intuitive AI Energy Mode² automatically optimizes settings to reduce the amount of energy consumed by connected Samsung appliances,³ making it easy to maximize energy savings and help lower your home’s energy costs. This includes up to 15% savings for compatible refrigerators,⁴ up to 20% for compatible air conditioners⁵ and up to 35% for compatible washers⁶ on select cycles.⁷

For its efforts with SmartThings Energy, Samsung has been awarded the industry’s first mass-market Smart Home Energy Management Systems (SHEMS) certification by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA has also awarded Samsung 260 ENERGY STAR® certifications, including 43 “Most Efficient” recognitions.⁸

KBIS attendees can also learn more about the new Less Microfiber Cycle and Filter, the former of which cuts microplastic emissions during laundry by up to 54%.⁹ Now available in Europe, the cycle will roll out to compatible washers in Korea from February this year and in the U.S. soon.

Empowering More Personalized Experiences With Advanced Connectivity

In 2023, Bespoke appliances will deliver more personalized experiences with connectivity to help make daily life more convenient and productive. At KBIS, Samsung will highlight how its SmartThings services are transforming the way people interact with appliances by creating more intuitive and seamless experiences that bring calm to our connected world.

The six SmartThings services on display — SmartThings Energy, Cooking, Pet Care, Clothing Care, Air Care and Home Care — add new levels of convenience and efficiency to daily life. Together, these services make managing smart homes simple by catering to consumers’ diverse needs. This is especially true in the kitchen, where SmartThings Cooking offers a more personalized take on meal preparation that considers users’ health goals and what they have in their fridge. It works seamlessly with the new Bespoke AI Oven to sync recipe recommendations with cooking settings while Samsung Health integration helps users keep track of their diet for healthier living. The oven also includes cameras that allow it to optimize cooking settings using food-recognition technology and let users create time-lapse videos of food cooking to share on social media.

Also new to the kitchen, the Bespoke 4-Door Flex Family Hub+ refrigerator features a 32-inch, bezel-less full HD display that is perfect for multitasking. The larger screen makes using SmartThings services a breeze and streamlines everything from entertainment to home management by allowing users to view multiple apps at once. This means users can take advantage of Samsung TV Plus’s picture-in-picture function to tune in to more than 190 free channels¹⁰ while adding items to their shopping list, following along to a recipe video, managing the family calendar and more — at the same time. The screen is also perfect for displaying family photos or artwork from around the world using services like Google Photos and Atelier, respectively. The new SmartThings Dashboard also takes advantage of the larger screen to make households’ smart home controls easily accessible.

Samsung Electronics today announced the global launch of the Bespoke Infinite Line Refrigerator in select markets around the world. Having originally launched in Europe,¹ the Bespoke Infinite Line Refrigerator will expand to countries including Mexico, Thailand and Australia by the end of the year.

Samsung’s new premium built-in refrigerator is available with a choice of fridge, freezer or wine cellar models and features a timelessly contemporary modular design that seamlessly blends into any interior. Bespoke 4-Door Flex With Family Hub+ Brings Bigger Display and Better Connectivity

The new Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with Family Hub+ introduces powerful Family Hub features to a 4-door Bespoke design, combining an all-in-one communication and entertainment hub with an impressively large display.

The Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with Family Hub+’s dynamic features are showcased on its 32-inch, bezel-less FHD screen that is nearly two times larger than that of previous models. Samsung’s Bespoke Home Challenge in South Africa will once again take place to showcase the unlimited design possibilities of Bespoke appliances. For two weeks, contestants will build their ideal kitchen and living space. Four finalists have already been selected, and the contest’s winner will be announced early in 2023. The challenge will give a platform to users’ creativity and innovation and allow participants to create their dream home design using the ultra-customizable and sleek Bespoke series.

Also in Korea, Samsung announced the winner of #BESPOKERendezvous, a Bespoke refrigerator design contest. Of the 1,114 works that were submitted, about 28,000 people voted online to select the top ten finalists. Samsung held an onsite #BESPOKERendezvous party and award ceremony where Cho Kyung-min’s water-inspired design, “Floating Rings,” was selected as the final winner.

Redefining Art and Auctions in Poland

In Poland, a Samsung Bespoke refrigerator with a design from French artist Thibaud Hérem was auctioned off at the DESA Unicum, a leading auction house in the country and the eighth-largest auction house in Europe. The auction included various unusual art objects, including furniture, sculptures and home accessories. For the first time in the country, a Samsung Bespoke refrigerator featuring an image of the Chateau de Fontainebleau, a building of great importance to French art and culture, was awarded to the winning bidder and considered a piece of applied art. The proceeds earned from the refrigerator will be donated to Friends of the National Museum in Warsaw Association to build a new collection for the museum and the “Self-Portraits XXI,” a project that supports contemporary Polish artists.

Samsung has launched its new Home Meta service in Korea, a metaverse-based 3D experience that allows users to choose and experience Bespoke products in an environment similar to their homes. Users can choose the exact model and color they desire, view products not available in stores and simulate how the appliances will appear in their house using the virtual service.

The world today faces many challenges. In particular, the pandemic has become a cause for us to back on the various challenges we’ve faced in the past, the biggest issue among those pertaining to the environment.

As a result, consumers have become more aware of the impact their choices are having on the environment and are practicing eco-conscious activities in their daily lives to compensate. This is especially applicable at homes where we spend most of our time. Consumers want home appliances that help create a sustainable home life.

In response to these consumer demands, Samsung Electronics introduced Bespoke Home Appliances in 2019, which includes not only customizable design and function but also sustainable solutions. Since its launch, Bespoke home appliances have received great reviews¹ from consumers and the industry and have expanded to more than 50 countries worldwide.

Now, we are taking that vision one step further to create the ultimate sustainable home experience. By combining SmartThings-based connectivity with the energy efficiency technology of home appliances, we are planning to become the No. 1 energy efficiency brand, expand sustainable efforts through meaningful collaborations and provide solutions to realize a Net Zero Home.

Vision of No.1 Energy Efficient Home Appliances

As the first step in bringing our sustainability vision to reality, Samsung Electronics is developing products with the goal of being labeled No.1 in energy efficient home appliances in the world.

As consumers’ lifestyles evolve and demands become more diverse, Samsung home appliances have also improved in performance and efficiency every year to meet those needs. However, improving the hardware of home appliances is only a part of our long-term vision. It is important to also consider ways to make new technology continuously more usable, creating more value for the users.

As such, this year, we introduced a new smart home service that can maximize the synergy among home appliances called Bespoke Home. At the center of this, SmartThings Energy monitors the energy usage of connected home appliances and automatically switches on AI Energy Mode, when needed, to save energy.

As we strive to become the No.1 in energy efficient home appliances, combining high-efficiency products with SmartThings Energy has proven to be very effective. Consequently, by the end of next year, nearly all home appliances will be Wi-Fi enabled allowing consumers to continuously reduce energy usage with ease. This also means that in the future, all Samsung’s home appliances will have AI-based energy saving functions built-in.

Sustainable Future Through Meaningful Collaboration

Secondly, Samsung Electronics is collaborating with other companies in search of sustainable solutions.

As evidenced by Bespoke appliances and SmartThings, intelligent synergies can have a significant impact on progressing our efforts. As such, in helping us reach our lofty goals for the future, we have sought out partnerships with companies that have similar sustainability goals.

With internationally recognized eco-conscious clothing brand Patagonia, Samsung Electronics has taken on the problem of microplastics being emitted into the sea. Sharing our expertise and know-how in clothing materials and washing technologies, we have developed new solutions that can reduce microplastic emissions from laundry.

To increase the effectiveness of this effort, the microplastic emission reduction course developed by Samsung Electronics and Patagonia will not only be available in new products released in Europe but also to existing products through software updates within the year.

The Ultimate Sustainability Experience with Net Zero Homes

Thirdly, Samsung Electronics is developing the ultimate sustainable home that can generate its own energy and reduce carbon emissions.

Through cooperation with Qcells, a complete clean energy solutions company, Samsung Electronics had developed the Net Zero Home. Inside, SmartThings plays a pivotal role in the efficient control of various devices including air conditioners, home appliances, to even the blinds. Furthermore, SmartThings Energy works together with the solar energy solutions of Qcells to present a blueprint for a house that can self-produce, store and efficiently power itself.

With the combined efforts of Samsung Electronics, Qcells and SMA, we will be able to create sustainable homes both domestically and internationally.

Samsung Electronics is also implementing a variety of carbon-neutral projects that can reduce the negative impact on the environment to make the vision for a sustainable future a reality. Specifically, this has meant switching to renewable energy that reduces carbon emissions such as solar energy and investing in wind power generation.

Samsung is improving lives through innovation, and with it, opening the way to a sustainable future. At a time when we face complex challenges in the world, we want to expand our vision to a wider range of areas to help. Samsung Electronics will continue to make efforts to provide sustainable solutions from production to logistics, use and disposal.

Global by Design

Creative inspiration comes in many forms. As a part of the ongoing exploration to discover new design ideas, Samsung has been taking cues from artists around the world. Starting in Korea in 2019, Samsung collaborated with famed designers, such as furniture designer Seungji Mun, interior designer Hasuk Jang and space and strategy designers Jong Kim and Teo Yang. Together, these visionaries led the original design campaign highlighting Bespoke appliances’ adaptable and customizable features.

From there, the inspiration for Bespoke design ventured outside Korea. In 2021, French illustrator Thibaud Hérem and American artist Andy Rementer introduced European architecture and pop art to Bespoke refrigerator designs, both of which are available globally today. Furthermore, earlier this year, Alex Proba, founder of Brooklyn and Portland-based design studio StudioPROBA, created her own limited-edition Bespoke refrigerator panels. Proba used colors and shapes found in nature to express joy through her panel designs — Proba’s panels are also available for consumers to enjoy. Through collaborations such as these, artists have been lending a hand in evolving the Bespoke design language by infusing their own artistic styles.

Global inspiration for design also came in the form of cultural representation. In the United States, Samsung introduced panel designs for the 4-Door Flex Refrigerator based on the stars and stripes of the American flag in celebration of the nation’s Independence Day on the July 4.

Across the pond, even the Queen of England was cited as a source of inspiration. In May, Samsung released limited edition panels with the Union Jack flag designs for Bespoke users in the U.K. in celebration of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.

Made by Consumers, for Consumers

A key aspect of expanding the Bespoke design ethos has been listening to consumers. For instance, Samsung launched a worldwide design contest, providing consumers with Bespoke refrigerator panels as a blank canvas for self-expression.

The contests started in Korea with #BESPOKE Rendezvous in 2019. Samsung took to the trendy streets of Hongdae, Seoul with a 3-day pop-up event to launch the design contest, joined by celebrities and performers. Attendees got to see first-hand the modularity of the Bespoke refrigerators in various configurations and were encouraged to create their own designs in exploring the freedom of design. Also in attendance at the event, world-famous graffiti artist Artime Joe of street art team Stick Up Kids performed a live drawing on refrigerator panels.

With more than a thousand design entries covering everything from scenes from Korea’s history to modern abstract art, the contest concluded with the top three winners being announced at the #ProjectPRISM lifestyle showroom at the Samsung Digital Plaza Gangnam location. Later the winners were also invited to showcase their work to designers from around the world at the Milan Furniture Fair.

The contests also made their mark in September 2021, with contests held in Singapore and globally from the U.K., followed by Vietnam in December. Following those, Samsung also launched a design contest in the U.A.E. earlier this year.

In Singapore, Samsung commissioned local artists Candice Phang, Michael Mindflyer, Tan Zi Xi as well as furniture retailer Commune and interior design firm Rooot Studio to create panel designs as inspiration ahead of the #BespokeDesignedByYou contest. After displaying their works, the three artists – Phang, Mindflyer and Xi – also participated as judges in the contest, where they selected a grand prize winner.

In September, Samsung with Wallpaper* magazine in the U.K. hosted a global design contest, drawing in 1,581 submissions. The top 50 designs were selected by a panel of judges consisting of Samsung executives, Wallpaper*’s editor-in-chief as well as local artists. From there, the entries were narrowed down to a hopeful 15 through a popular vote from consumers. The winning designs were displayed at the Samsung K.X. space in London throughout 2021.

Samsung, in Vietnam, launched the Bespoke Be You design competition working with the Vietnam Design Association (VDAS) and a community of design students. Participants were pushed to the limits of their creativity and tasked to create kitchen spaces showcasing the endless design possibilities of Bespoke. Ten design experts and professors from the fields of interior design and architecture as well as representatives of organizations, international design associations and media agencies served as judges for this competition.

In the U.A.E., Samsung presented the #InspireByTheNation contest, which celebrated the nation and its uniqueness with panel designs that reflected important cultural identifiers such as landscapes, foods and architecture. Local food and lifestyle influencers Jacob Abrian and Nisrine EL Lababidi, as well as renowned Chef Alexandros Sperxos, participated as expert judges selecting the top three winners for the event.

At its core, Bespoke has developed as a brand identity capable of transcending geographies and cultures. Thanks to sourcing design inspiration from artists worldwide, Bespoke has become a reflection of the diversity and creativity of its consumer base.

Beyond the Possibility of Home Décor

In addition to design, the role of technology is also pushed to the limits with Bespoke. In 2021, Samsung introduced the Bespoke Creator AI color recommendation service in Korea, which helps make appliance design more accessible through the use of A.I. technology. The A.I. analyzes photos consumers upload of their homes to develop color recommendations that fit best in their environment.

Bringing True Bespoke Customization

Building on the success of the collaborations and competitions, Samsung launched MyBespoke offering North American users a chance to express their individualism by designing their own Bespoke refrigerator panels from start to finish.

To start things off, three influencers took part in designing panels on the Bespoke French Door refrigerator. Later this year, MyBespoke will be opened to the North American public, marking the first time users will have the opportunity to create truly one-of-a-kind panels for Bespoke refrigerators.

By taking cues from artists, using advanced technology and launching a customizable design experience, Samsung hopes to transform traditional home appliances into statement pieces. At its recent Bespoke Home 2022 event, Samsung introduced how all six services of SmartThings Home Life come together to enhance the user experience through the lens of Jason, a friend getting ready for a housewarming party. For instance, Jason used SmartThings Cooking to prepare shrimp quesadillas, SmartThings Clothing Care to freshen up his party outfit, and SmartThings Air Care to purify the party space. Demonstrating the day-to-day uses of SmartThings, Samsung showcased how SmartThings can simplify a user’s to-do list.

A Smarter Home Ecosystem

The biggest benefit to having a smart, connected home is its ability to make life more comfortable. The ability to have total control over all appliances in the home brings convenience, productivity and even more time to the user’s day. Samsung’s vision for SmartThings Home Life gives users spare time to stay more in the moments that actually matter by combining the power of the following SmartThings services:¹

• SmartThings Cooking² provides personalized meal plans and recipes based on user preferences and what is in their refrigerator. It also automatically adjusts cooking modes and temperatures on cooking appliances based on recipes.
• SmartThings Energy³ helps users monitor, report home energy consumption in real time and save on their electric bills.
• SmartThings Clothing Care⁴ syncs with the Bespoke AirDresser as well as Bespoke Washer and Dryer to provide optimal clothing care recommendations.
• SmartThings Pet Care⁵ syncs with home appliances such as the Bespoke Air Purifier and Bespoke Jet Bot AI+ to keep homes clean and help users check in on their pets when they are out of the home.
• SmartThings Air Care⁶ works with Samsung’s air purifiers and air conditioners to monitor air quality in and outside the user’s home in real time.

SmartThings continues to innovate in order to simplify everyday tasks so that users have more time to enjoy their lives at home. This 3-part series will introduce the journey Bespoke has taken so far as it evolved to deliver greater value by expanding the capabilities of home appliances.

As Part One in this series, this article will detail the decisions behind the design innovations that evolved the Bespoke design ethos, from colors and cultures to true customizations.

Adding Color and Texture to “White Goods”

The Flat Style minimalist design philosophy — the theory that simple, clean lines and flush surfaces would be ideal in matching modern home décor — was the driving inspiration behind Bespoke Home appliances. Such designs could easily fit into any modern kitchen concept creating a sense of cohesion with the surrounding space, while customizable facades on the exterior would allow consumers to express themselves through a variety of striking color options and material finishes.

Refrigerators were the first appliances in the Bespoke journey of elevating the home appliance designs. Since then, Bespoke has expanded to the rest of the home to include an entire kitchen package, including ovens, dishwashers and cooktops, as well as living and laundry appliances such as vacuum cleaners, washers and dryers.

It became clear very quickly that the Bespoke design concept resonated with users who wanted their appliances to reflect their own diverse tastes, and even the industry took notice. In 2020, the Bespoke refrigerator won NYCxDESIGN Awards in the Kitchen product category and was selected as an honoree at CES 2021 in recognition of Bespoke’s creative use of design in offering users a way to easily personalize their appliances. Bespoke appliances received a silver award and Best-in-Show honors at the International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) in 2021 and gold at the International Forum (iF) Design Award in 2022.

Later, Bespoke would expand into more kitchen appliances and then the rest of the home with living appliances, introducing more color and material options. The team behind Bespoke’s designs decided that a continuous cycle of new colors for Bespoke appliances would make it easier for users to find the design that best reflected their unique lifestyle.

For users who may find deciding on home décor daunting, in 2021, Samsung introduced the Bespoke AI Recommendation service in Korea. This service helped make appliance designing more accessible with the help of AI. Users would upload photos of their homes or designs they liked, and the AI would analyze the images to come up with color recommendations that fit best in that environment.

As bold as these appliances were in a sea of “white goods,” however, Samsung knew the vision could not end with just color and material options. With Bespoke, true customization is more than choice — it’s also about personalization.

From Colors to Culture

Diving deeper into the Bespoke design vision, Samsung sought to highlight key identifying factors shared by all Bespoke users — a sense of belonging through culture. Collaborating with artists from a wide range of disciplines as well as Bespoke users themselves, Samsung wanted to reflect cultures from around the globe onto Bespoke refrigerator panel designs.

This year, Samsung introduced the Union Jack flag as a new design option for Bespoke refrigerators in the U.K., recognizing the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession.

In May last year, Samsung held design contests on social media in collaboration with designers, including award-wining British interior designer Kelly Hoppen CBE and London-based designer Yinka Ilori. The contests were themed around two of the most important passions in the kitchen — inspirational designs and inspirational food. In Europe, through the #BespokeDesignedByYou design challenge, Samsung invited users to share their own unique refrigerator designs based on how Bespoke sparks creativity at home in the kitchen. In the U.S., Samsung launched the #BespokeDinnerParty challenge, where users shared their perfect Bespoke dinner party plans with cocktails, flower arrangements, dinnerware and food inspired by bold Bespoke colors.

Before that, many artists took part in developing Bespoke’s designs. French illustrator Hérem added European architecture into the design, while American artist Rementer added colorful portraits of diverse communities through the lens of pop art. Danish design company HAY experimented with natural food-inspired colors, and American artist Alex Proba expressed joy and happiness with colorful patterns and shapes inspired by nature.

These artist and user-involved design experiences would serve as a prologue to the next evolution of Bespoke’s designs.

The Next Level of Bespoke Customization

If using colors offers users a way to be expressive and identify with cultures through a sense of belonging, the next level in Bespoke designs would be true self-expression. As such, Samsung is now offering users a truly self-expressive Bespoke customization experience from start to finish.

Bespoke’s concept of true customization began to take shape with design contests worldwide. The excitement and enthusiasm expressed by the participants from these contests inspired the beginning of the digital printing service called MyBespoke in the U.S.

With MyBespoke, Samsung will arrive at the latest evolution of Bespoke design, shifting from self-expression through preselected options to a truly Bespoke customization experience where users can create their own designs from scratch.

At the start of Bespoke’s design journey was the vision to inspire users to personalize their homes with designs that truly reflect who they are. With the MyBespoke launch, Samsung is one step closer to making that vision a reality. Samsung will continue to innovate to expand design, experience and customization to make life at home more expressive and enjoyable.

Offering a powerful end-to-end clean with an All-in-One Clean Station, Samsung Electronics’ Bespoke Jet vacuum makes tidying up the house as easy as can be.

To learn more about how Samsung optimized the feature-packed vac to cater to consumers’ evolving needs, Samsung Newsroom spoke with vacuum cleaner engineer and project leader Jongkuk Lim and his team who were in charge of the appliance’s development. Read on to find out all you need to know about Samsung’s inspiration for the Bespoke Jet and the innovative technologies that brought the device to life.

Putting Consumers’ Needs First

Jongkuk Lim shares his team’s insights that show that today’s consumers increasingly prioritize hygiene and weight as key aspects of their cordless vacuum experience.

Recently, as people around the world have begun to spend more time at home, they’ve started to place more focus on keeping their living spaces clean. This has led to increased interest in stick vacuum cleaners that are both powerful and easy to use. As Lim explained, performance and ease of use were just two of the many factors that Samsung considered when refining the Bespoke Jet’s design.

“Markets around the world are quickly shifting from corded vacuum cleaners to a cordless robot or stick vacuums, which help reduce manual labor,” said Lim. “Because many homes outside of Korea are carpeted and have pets, it is essential for stick vacuums to offer excellent performance regardless of the type of flooring, and a sufficiently long battery time to cover the entire house. These are the most basic yet important consumer needs.”

That difference between homes in Samsung’s native Korea and those abroad underlines the importance of tailoring appliances to meet a wide range of consumer needs. As Lim noted, when developing the Bespoke Jet, Samsung prioritized cleaning performance and runtime while also ensuring that the device would deliver on two key aspects of vacuum design that are becoming increasingly important to today’s consumers: hygiene and weight.

“Korean consumers are largely satisfied with suction power, brushes and battery performance, but what sets them apart from other consumers is that they are very sensitive about vacuum weight,” said Lim. “They prefer strong yet lightweight vacuums.”

The Bespoke Jet’s Multi-layered Filtration System traps up to 99.9999% of dust particles.

With consumers at home and abroad showing increased interest in hygiene due to COVID-19, Samsung equipped the Bespoke Jet with a Multi-layered Filtration System that traps up to 99.9999% of dust particles.¹ As air is sucked in, the main cyclone separates large dust particles, which are picked up in a metal mesh grille filter. Samsung’s patented Jet Cyclone and micro filter then catch fine dust particles. Finally, a fine dust filter traps micro dust² that can easily escape.

To illustrate how the Bespoke Jet caters to regional differences, vacuum development team member Hun Kang noted how people in certain countries are accustomed to wearing shoes at home, while others take them off. “Those who live in countries where people are expected to take their shoes off inside often live in houses with wooden floors,” said Kang. “We generally see high demand in these countries for wet mops.”

To meet their needs, Kang added, the Bespoke Jet comes with the Spray Spinning Sweeper.³ Its antibacterial mop pads are reusable, and it enables users to manually spray as much water as they want without worrying about the mop pads drying out.

Hygiene Is King

When designing the Bespoke Jet, Samsung paid particularly close attention to details and features that would deliver a powerful and hygienic clean. This commitment to cleanliness is reflected in features like the vacuum’s All-in-One Clean Station, which automatically empties the dustbin. As team member Daon Lee explained, this convenient feature is becoming increasingly more important.

“A few years ago, only a handful of robot vacuum cleaners could automatically empty their dustbin,” said Lee. “However, since the introduction of the Samsung Jet Clean Station, this capability has become a core function of vacuum cleaners, including stick models. With the growing need for hygienic products, being able to automatically empty the dustbin is no longer a ‘bonus’ for vacuums; it’s a key purchasing factor.”

When the Bespoke Jet is docked, the All-in-One Clean Station automatically begins charging the device and empties the dustbin so users don’t have to. When emptying the dustbin, Samsung’s innovative Air Pulse technology⁴ utilizes strong air pressure to prevent fine dust particles from scattering in the air, keeping living spaces clean and hygienic.

Lightweight Yet Powerful

Suction power was another key consideration for Lim and his team. The enhancements the team introduced in the new model maximize suction power by amplifying efficiency.

“The Bespoke Jet is equipped with a more advanced Digital Inverter Motor that is faster, smaller and more efficient than a typical motor, and also has a longer-lasting battery life,” said Lim. “This lighter motor produces incredible suction power. It’s capable of rotating at up to 135,000rpm, which is a significant improvement over the previous model’s maximum speed of 110,000rpm.”

The vacuum’s suction power is bolstered by Jet Cyclone technology. Equipped with 27 air holes that minimize suction loss, the feature’s high-efficiency multi-cyclone structure creates an optimal air path that reduces air resistance around the dustbin and hygienically traps fine dust particles sucked into the vacuum.

Lim also shed some light on how Samsung complemented the Bespoke Jet’s powerful innovations with a lightweight design that sets a new standard for stick vacuums to follow. “At just 2.44kg, the upgraded Bespoke Jet boasts the lightest weight in its class thanks to its high-performance, extremely lightweight motor that was developed through close collaboration between Samsung’s motor development team and others,” said Lim. “We also reduced the diameter of a drum inside the Slim Action Brush from 62mm to 44mm to make the brush even lighter and reduce wrist fatigue while cleaning.”

Convenient Cleaning

Samsung went to great lengths to equip the Bespoke Jet with an eye-catching design that’s both sleek and intuitive. The result of the team’s hard work is a vacuum that not only blends seamlessly with consumers’ décor, but also features key enhancements that maximize convenience.

As Lim explained, enhancing the vacuum’s form required careful coordination with Samsung’s design team to explore how to offer users more convenience while maintaining the device’s elegant aesthetic. “Through a series of discussions with the design team, we were able to come up with the All-in-One Clean Station, which can hold the stick cleaner without a separate cradle,” said Lim. “This enables the vacuum to look much sleeker while also taking up less space.

Yoonkyung Cho shares the process of trial-and-error the team went through to develop the most optimal brush design for the Bespoke Jet.

Other convenience-focused enhancements included the decision to add a soft roller to the Jet Dual Brush to pick up large dust particles from hard floors, and equip the vacuum with an intuitive LCD display and a long-lasting detachable battery. For the soft roller, team member Yoonkyung Cho explained: “We created several mockups in different styles to develop the most optimal design that would allow the front part of the brush to move in a natural way.

“The intuitive digital LCD display allows users to monitor key indicators such as runtime for each mode, charging time, maintenance and repair instructions for easy control and management, while the lightweight detachable battery guarantees up to 120 minutes of runtime,” noted Cho. “This means that users no longer need to worry about their vacuum’s battery running out while cleaning.”

Certified Performance

The Bespoke Jet has been recognized by various globally-respected testing and certification agencies for its excellent performance in trapping fine dust and allergens, including Germany’s SLG Prüf- und Zertifizierungs GmbH and the British Allergy Foundation (BAF).

The vacuum received the former’s highest five-star rating for trapping 99.999% of fine dust between 0.5-4.2㎛ in size, and was recognized by the latter for reducing exposure to allergens. In addition, the Clean Station is certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for reducing dust emissions by up to 400 times when the dustbin is emptied.

Lim noted that the pandemic complicated the vacuum’s development process, but the team couldn’t be happier with the final result.

“Working from home was not easy,” said Lim. “However, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, which limited our development activities, each of our team members worked hard towards a common goal. I am thankful to all of them for developing such a wonderful product that eventually received such excellent evaluations from external organizations.”

Innovating For Consumers

Daon Lee shares insights into the innovative journey the Bespoke Jet has gone on so far.

In previous years, the cordless vacuum cleaner market has been primarily focused on product specifications, such as suction, running time and device weight, but Samsung and Lim’s team have been innovating in this space with the introduction of the Clean Station in 2020. Since its introduction, the second most important buying factor in the Korean vacuum market is now the Clean Station, with a new emphasis having been placed on user convenience through the automatic emptying of the dustbin.

Going forward, the team’s focus has shifted from mechanical engineering to ergonomics in product design. “We plan to explore and develop new technologies and novel functionalities throughout the entire vacuum use process, from the very start of cleaning to the storing of the device,” noted Lim. “We will put our best foot forward to genuinely surprise our customers and lead rapid development in the vacuum cleaner market.”

With hygiene-forward lifestyles now here to stay, Lim and his team have a clear idea of what the future development of the Bespoke Jet and other vacuum products should look like. “My ambition is to provide the most optimal cleaning solutions based on consumers’ lifestyles that analyze cleaning patterns with the help of AI technologies,” affirmed Lim.

The elegance of the design ensures that it will not look out of place when installed alongside existing appliances and cabinets. Integrating the water and ice dispensers into the appliance’s interior emphasizes the design’s stylish simplicity.

Built into the refrigerator’s interior to reduce the risk of contamination, the Beverage Center offers fast and easy access to refreshingly cold and naturally flavored water. As soon as it is placed inside the fridge, the dishwasher safe¹ and BPA free² Autofill Pitcher automatically fills with purified water, which can be infused with fruits and herbs to create deliciously flavored beverages.

The Dual Auto Ice Maker produces both Cubed Ice and Ice Bites^TM, which are smaller than ice cubes and can chill drinks much faster. It is capable of producing 5.3lbs (2.4kg) of ice per day and stores up to 9.9lbs (4.5kg)³ — twice the amount of other ice makers. Its sliding cover makes it easy to use an ice scoop and helps protect ice from exposure to air when the freezer door is open.

Through past collaborations with artists Thibaud Hérem, Andy Rementer and Danish lifestyle brand HAY, Samsung’s Bespoke appliances were transformed into statement pieces as these artists explored the limits of Bespoke’s customizability. Proba is the founder of Brooklyn and Portland-based design studio StudioPROBA. She describes the inspiration for her art as coming from shapes and colors that evoke positive memories and happiness. The artist has worked with hundreds of global brands on several art pieces — including graphic, environmental and furniture design, as well as artwork.

Proba’s partnership with Samsung began when she was invited to design a room in Samsung’s product experience space, Samsung 837. Located in New York’s iconic Meatpacking district, Samsung 837 is a showroom where visitors can enjoy interactive experiences including virtual reality exhibitions, music performances and design installations such as the Bespoke My Home stages where Proba’s projects were first displayed.

Divided into three arrangements — Kitchen, Lounge and Studio — the spaces are designed by local artists reflecting their stylistic visions. Ceramics artist, Aliza Simons of Brooklyn based Henry Street Studio, designed the kitchen with earthy tones integrating various ceramics. Furniture designer, Stephen Burks arranged the lounge space creating a cozy and relaxing vibe by combining his unique style with Bespoke’s customizable designs. And Proba designed The Studio to reflect her own décor melding joyful colors and abstract shapes, and even including some of her personal belongings into the display.

Bringing Nature Inside via a New Medium

Thanks to this latest collaboration project, Proba’s exclusive designs for the Bespoke 4-Door Flex refrigerator are now available for consumer homes. “My work explores joy and happiness using colorful patterns and shapes inspired by nature,” said Proba. “Designing for Samsung’s Bespoke refrigerator was a new adventure for me, and a way for my art to transcend traditional mediums — bringing vibrant color with abstract patterns to unexpected places.”

Hygienic Cleaning Performance

The Bespoke Jet features the All-in-One Clean Station, which keeps a user’s space hygienic while cleaning. When docked, the All-in-One Clean Station is able to empty its dustbin automatically without any fine dust particles escaping³ thanks to Samsung’s unique Air Pulse technology. It also automatically charges the Bespoke Jet vacuum cleaner at the same time.

A 99.999 percent⁴ Multi-Layered Filtration System makes sure that only clean air is released from the Bespoke Jet during cleaning. As air is sucked in, the main cyclone separates large dust particles, which are then picked up in a metal mesh grille filter. A micro filter then catches fine dust particles, and finally, a fine dust filter traps micro dust⁵ that can easily escape. In this first installment of ‘People Behind Bespoke’, Harry Choi, Head of Design for Digital Appliances at Samsung Electronics, discusses the origin of the Bespoke design philosophy and the role that it plays in creating appliances fit for every lifestyle.

Our homes are full of expressive elements. Everything from the architecture and the furniture to the decorative objects we place helps us express our individuality. However, even though they feature prominently in the interior, home appliances are still largely designed with a standardized approach.

If no two homes are the same, why should our appliances be? This was the simple question that sparked the idea for Samsung’s Bespoke – a lineup of home appliances designed to be a part of a person’s home décor, reflecting their aesthetic preferences and elements of identity. We focused on creating home appliances that are not just beautiful, but are also customizable so as to harmonize with all kinds of interior spaces, no matter the style.

The Birth of Bespoke

Our journey to elevate the design of home appliances began in the kitchen, a central space for many social activities in the home. The refrigerator is often the most visible and most used appliance in this social space, and yet, its design has largely been in stasis for many years.

With our Bespoke refrigerators, our aim was to elevate the design of refrigerators without compromising the reliable functionality and performance that Samsung products are known for. Taking inspiration from contemporary urban lifestyles and aesthetic trends, our designers created an expansive palette of colors for the refrigerator’s customizable door panels. They also developed unconventional finishes, such as matte steel and glass, to bring new textures to refrigerators and open up new possibilities for kitchen design.

But the Bespoke design philosophy goes beyond just colors and finishes. With a modular, built-in look, Bespoke refrigerators can be tailored to fit seamlessly into different kitchen layouts. Bespoke design has broken down the price barrier of built-in appliances and now, design is able to listen more closely to the consumer. By mixing and matching different modules, users can create Bespoke refrigerators that provide the right functionality for their lifestyle, dietary habits, and family size.

Creating Bespoke Lifestyles and Living Spaces

Building on the design and development process of the Bespoke refrigerator, we are now ready to bring the Bespoke design philosophy to the rest of the home, empowering users to create ideal living spaces while simplifying their everyday routines.

Take the Bespoke Cube air purifier, for example, which features a sleek, modern design that comes in various colors and interchangeable front grills in patterns like stripe and herringbone. The Bespoke Cube air purifiers are beautiful additions to any room, complementing your interior décor while quietly working to keep air quality safe.

Furthermore, the Bespoke Jet was designed with portability in mind. Unlike larger appliances, vacuums are meant to be carried around the house – but they are often hidden away when they are not being used. The Bespoke Jet’s meticulous design, with the body virtually floating above its round-shaped platform, gives the vacuum a sense of elegance that allows it to stand out in the open in living spaces even when not in use. Functionally, the Bespoke Jet’s all-in-one Clean Station and charging dock makes cleaning and maintaining household hygiene a breeze.

Gone are the days of one-size-fits-all home appliance design. We at Samsung believe that the shift toward customization is not just a trend, but in fact is the emergence of a new paradigm. Designed for You: Delving Into Bespoke

Understanding that interior design is a passion point for many Bespoke users, Bespoke Studio is an all-new way for users in any part of the world to come together and share their passion virtually. Visitors to Bespoke Studio will be able to enjoy the full gamut of the user-centric showroom experience – right from their devices.

Starting from Bespoke Studio’s Virtual Showroom page, users are able to go on a virtual journey through a true-to-life Bespoke showroom. Not only are products organized in ways that provide a true taste of how Bespoke appliances work in different environments, but users can also easily interact with products to learn more, and even connect to a live assistant to ask questions.

Once they are satisfied with their choice, users can easily move through to the Configurator page, which grants complete customization over the product selected so that each user can be sure that their Bespoke device is unique to their tastes. What’s more, once the user has customized their device exactly to their preferences, they can then directly purchase that product online through Bespoke Studio.

Bespoke Studio also features a Community page, a dedicated space where users can come together to submit their own media content, learn more about Bespoke from leading lifestyle experts and see what’s next in their region regarding upcoming online and social events.

Bringing Bespoke to Life

In order to ensure that Bespoke Studio is able to offer the same experience as a consumer might get offline, Samsung harnessed innovative technologies to generate a 3D virtual tour based on its flagship Bespoke showroom in Gangnam, Korea. This showroom features the largest offline lineup of Bespoke products in the world, meaning that Bespoke Studio, too, offers users the full Bespoke experience.

So that users can have all the information they need at their fingertips, the UI of Bespoke Studio has been designed to be as easy-to-use as possible, as well as being fully interactive so as to provide as much information to users as they need.

When users enter the Bespoke Studio page, a helpful virtual guide appears to inform users on how to make the most of the Studio. When touring the virtual showroom, clicking on dedicated ‘hot spots’ will provide a pop-up menu of further product information; some products even feature video introductions, and for even more information on a product, users are able to connect in real-time to sales assistants. Bespoke Studio will launch in the UK in October 2021, in the US in January 2022, and in other regions further down the line.
