Samsung Electronics today announced its new digital signage lineup at InfoComm 2023, North America’s largest audiovisual trade show, taking place in Orlando, Florida from June 14 to 16.

“Technology is a vital part of any business, and the innovative signage lineup we’re showcasing at InfoComm empowers businesses across industries to grow,” said Hoon Chung, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “The newest addition to The Wall lineup is especially exciting, making production faster and easier in TV, film and other creative industries.”

Introducing The Wall for Virtual Production

At InfoComm, Samsung unveiled a new dedicated display, The Wall for Virtual Production (IVC Model), which will be available globally starting from today.

Virtual production studios can use ultra-large LED walls to create virtual content, integrating them with real-time visual effects technology to reduce the time and cost of content production. The Wall for Virtual Production leads the market in the application of this technology.

The Wall for Virtual Production’s LED display features pixel pitch options of P1.68 and P2.1, dedicated studio frame rates (23.976, 29.97 and 59.94Hz) and genlocking, which can synchronize the screen with a camera’s video signal. The display also boasts a refresh rate of up to 12,288Hz, a max brightness of 1,500nits, a 35,000:1 fixed contrast ratio (for P2.1) and up to 170-degree wide viewing angles. All these new features combine to enable an unprecedented level of picture quality for virtual content.

The Wall for Virtual Production is based on modular technology, allowing for a variety of installation options for different production environments and needs, ranging from a perfectly flat screen to up to 6,000R curvature. It can also be hung or stacked with other screens, and it is designed to be resilient to the dust and particles that are common in production environments.

The integrated Virtual Production Management (VPM) solution and the intuitive interface it provides make it easy to manage the screen and facilitate the highest-possible picture quality. To display colors as accurately and consistently as possible, The Wall for Virtual Production also features 3D lookup tables (LUTs) for color correction, wide-gamut HDR color processing and color adjustment between individual cabinets or modules. The VPM is also capable of detecting and resolving any potential LED-related issues.

At InfoComm, Samsung will be collaborating with Lux Machina, a pioneer of virtual production and modern ICVFX (In-Camera Visual Effects), to showcase The Wall for Virtual Production in actual use. Lux Machina has implemented technology like this in television series like “The Mandalorian” and “House of the Dragon,” as well as in broadcast events like the League of Legends World Championship, NFL Honors and The ACM Awards.

“The Wall has been designed for virtual production,” said Zach Alexander, President of Lux Machina. “With a high refresh rate, true color representation and a wide viewing angle, we believe that display technologies like this could help usher in the next generation of visual effects, making it much easier for studios to deliver high-quality virtual production projects.”

Samsung is also working with Wētā FX as a technical partner. Wētā FX is a New Zealand-based digital visual effects company that has produced visual effects for some of the highest-grossing films ever made, such as “The Lord of the Rings” series, “Avatar” and “Avatar: The Way of Water.”

“Samsung’s The Wall for Virtual Production provides excellent color rendition and picture quality, and with the screen properties and black levels, one is able to control the precision of light it sends into a volume with ease. We look forward to working with the innovative team at Samsung and seeing how new techniques and capabilities can improve the experience for our storytellers,” said Kimball Thurston, CTO of Wētā FX.

The All-New Samsung QxC Series Crystal UHD Signage

In addition to The Wall, Samsung is introducing its full lineup of 20 new models in the globally available QxC Series Crystal UHD Signage Series. The displays feature significant upgrades in design and performance for unparalleled features and picture quality in any commercial environment.

The QxC lineup includes five QHC displays with 700nits of brightness (75”, 65”, 55”, 50” and 43”), eight QMC displays with 500nits of brightness (98”, 85”, 75”, 65”, 55”, 50”, 43” and 32”) and seven QBC displays with 350nits of brightness (98”, 85”, 75”, 65”, 55”, 50” and 43”).

The bezels on the QxC series are consistent and even on all four sides of the display, using the same thickness and dimensions to create a symmetrical design. The VESA mounting holes are in the center of the displays to ensure secure mounting. The series is 28.5mm thick, 40% slimmer than the previous model.1

All QxC displays offer an easy and intuitive new user interface, 4K UHD resolution, Tizen 7.0 for optimized performance of web services and industry-leading durability. SmartView+ wirelessly connects the displays to up to six devices at once, while anti-glare panels minimize light reflection for an unimpeded viewing experience. Plus, all QxC models have an Eco Sensor that can detect the brightness of the surrounding environment and optimize the brightness of the display accordingly.

Samsung Ushers in the Era of All-in-One LED Displays

Samsung is also unveiling the LED All-in-One (IAC Model), a 130-inch full HD LED screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio. Its pre-assembled frame kit allows users to install the display simply by hanging it on a wall.

The LED All-in-One has a slim 56mm design (up to 64mm with the Slim Fit Wall Mount). The screen provides 1,000nits of peak brightness and a 3,840Hz refresh rate, resulting in stunning video quality. The built-in Samsung S-Box has support for integrated media play and Microsoft 365, delivering the latest commercial tools to make the most out of the large LED display in business environments.

Industry-First Carbon Footprint Certification From TÜV Rheinland

Separately, Samsung Electronics announced that its 2023 Smart Signage lineup has earned a series of certifications for environmentally preferable products from highly recognized institutes in Germany and the U.S.

The 2023 Smart Signage (QMC Model) and The Wall All-in-One (IAB Model) have become the first signage models to receive a product carbon footprint certification from TÜV Rheinland, a global testing body. Established in 1872 and headquartered in Cologne, Germany, TÜV Rheinland provides quality and safety certification services to multiple industries.

The organization calculates its carbon footprint certification by evaluating the amount of greenhouse gases generated throughout the entire product lifecycle, ranging from production to disposal, based on internationally recognized standards. The certification from TÜV Rheinland follows another recent and notable recognition for Samsung from the Carbon Trust.2

The 2023 Smart Signage (QMC Model) has also earned an ENERGY STAR 8.0 certification from the Environmental Protection Agency for its energy efficiency and an Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) certification in recognition of its eco-conscious efforts, such as its recycled plastic use.

ENERGY STAR is the government-backed symbol for energy efficiency, providing simple, credible and unbiased information that consumers and businesses rely on to make well-informed decisions in the U.S.

Each year, the ENERGY STAR program honors a select group of businesses and organizations that have made outstanding contributions in the transition to a clean energy economy. ENERGY STAR award winners lead their industries in the production, sale and adoption of energy-efficient products, homes, buildings, services and strategies. These efforts are essential to fighting the climate crisis, protecting public health and creating a clean energy future for everyone.

“Not only does Samsung’s comprehensive environmental strategy include enterprise-wide net zero and 100% renewable energy goals, but we’re also raising the industry bar even higher on energy efficiency. Samsung is committed to implementing innovative, energy saving technologies in its home appliance, mobile and consumer electronics products — with the goal of lowering power consumption levels by an average of 30 percent by 2030 compared to like products released in 2019,” said Mark Newton, Head of Corporate Sustainability for Samsung Electronics America. “As a long-time ENERGY STAR partner and recipient of the rare Corporate Commitment Award, Samsung is proud to receive these tremendous recognitions from the EPA and DOE. We believe our ENERGY STAR collaboration to be paramount for our company, our customers, and — of course — our planet.”

“As we accelerate historic efforts to address climate change, public-private partnerships will be essential to realizing the scale of our ambition,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. “I applaud this year’s ENERGY STAR award winners for working with EPA to deliver a clean energy future that saves American consumers and businesses money and creates jobs.”

The Sustained Excellence Award is the highest honor among ENERGY STAR Awards — and EPA presents the award to partners that have earned successive Partner of the Year awards and display continued leadership by demonstrating long-term commitments to climate action through energy efficiency. This marks the tenth year that Samsung has been named an ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence partner in the Product Brand Owner category.

Beyond the efforts we’re making to minimize our environmental footprint, Samsung is empowering our consumers to make a meaningful impact on the environment through everyday changes with our eco-conscious products. In 2022, Samsung had 474 ENERGY STAR certified base models in the U.S., which is an increase compared to 2021. As of 2022, that includes 100% of Samsung dishwashers, notebooks, air purifiers, front-load washers and most of our refrigerators, as well as many of our top-load washers and dryers. Samsung’s investment in America is also tied to ENERGY STAR: all our front load and top load washers from our South Carolina facility are ENERGY STAR certified. Moreover, Samsung is the first major brand to certify many of its new Ultra HD 4K televisions to the latest ENERGY STAR criteria. As of 2022, Samsung global product efficiency improvements, as exemplified by our commitment to ENERGY STAR certified products, have helped our customers avoid an estimated 334 million metric tons of CO2 emissions through the use of our products since 2009 — the equivalent of taking over 71 million cars off the road for a year, nearly three quarters of all passenger cars registered in the U.S.

Moreover, Samsung’s efforts to enrich and expand SmartThings Energy, the first-of-its-kind solution designed to help people better understand and manage their energy use so that they can make smarter, more environmentally conscious decisions about consumption and reduce their carbon footprint, have led the U.S. EPA to award Samsung the industry’s first mass-market Smart Home Energy Management Systems (SHEMS) certification. The certification recognizes smart home appliances and services that manage and automate connected devices to help consumers gain insights into their energy use, thereby inspiring energy-saving behavior, reducing costs and helping to facilitate demand response measures that minimize stress on the grid.

The Sustained Excellence award for Energy Management is bestowed on ENERGY STAR partners that demonstrate year over year excellence in improving the energy performance of commercial buildings through a corporate-wide, portfolio-based energy program. Samsung Electronics America has a diverse portfolio of 45 owned and leased buildings located across the U.S. In addition to varying climates, the many buildings are also home to one or more distinct corporate activities from offices to warehouses and distributions centers to electronic and appliance labs. In 2022, Samsung doubled down on our commitment to ENERGY STAR and continued to retrofit major systems in some of our facilities with ENERGY STAR certified equipment and technologies related to HVAC and lighting controls. These continued investments reduce the impact on the climate by our facility operations and have led to an 8.6% reduction in energy use since 2019.

Another testament to our efforts was demonstrated by doubling the number of ENERGY STAR Tenant Space Recognitions in 2022 from six to twelve. This number ranks second nationally for most recognized Tenant Space properties with Samsung representing 17.39% of the total properties recognized nationally.

Samsung is humbled and honored by these recognitions from the ENERGY STAR program and is committed to advanced energy efficiency in our products and operations as part of our key environmental goals and a shared journey to helping mitigate our consumers’ impact on the planet.

At a time when the climate crisis is top of mind, environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) is especially relevant to Samsung’s sustainability goals. Samsung is dedicated to numerous projects making our world a greener place, such as repurposing discarded fishing nets for use in Galaxy devices.

Samsung Newsroom is kicking off a new series highlighting how Samsung employees worldwide are building a more sustainable future. Jenni Chun’s journey is the first of many to showcase how we’re building a better, brighter world through ESG.

# A Day in the Life of Jenni Chun

Meet Jenni Chun, the Head of Regulatory and Environmental Affairs at Samsung Electronics America (SEA). As part of Samsung America’s Quality Assurance Lab, located half an hour away from SEA’s North American Headquarters in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, Jenni and her team take pride in activities that help tell Samsung’s sustainability story. So what is a day at Samsung like for Jenni?

“I get that question a lot, and I always tell people that no day ever repeats itself,” said Jenni. “My team and I manage such a wide range of topics, and the priorities may change in a moment, which is part of what makes this job so exciting.”

In her role, Jenni analyzes and connects each of Samsung’s products to different regulations and environmental issues, covering everything from air cleaners and dryers to tablets and packaging regulations. Whether her team is auditing, benchmarking or resolving issues related to standards and certifications, she oversees all environmental activities to make each day at Samsung more eco-conscious. No matter what she’s doing, however, Jenni usually collaborates with others to make her vision of sustainability a reality.

“I work closely with our research and development teams to ideate new projects or ideas that could become the next generation of technology while also ensuring a more sustainable future,” said Jenni. “We collaborate to influence at every level, as well as amplify all of our sustainability efforts to consumers.”

Her department has a wide reach — from working with the U.S. Public Affairs team to ensure that Samsung is well-represented in government and trade association communications, to product and brand teams to ideate how the company can reduce its environmental footprint, to Global CS Center’s work to make a global impact, Jenni works hard every day to see how the planet can benefit from Samsung’s vision for a brighter tomorrow.

# Living the Green Mindset

Whether she’s working for Samsung, volunteering for her community, or at home raising her child, Jenni wants to integrate sustainability into everything she does.

For Jenni, there is so much to learn and improve when looking at other countries’ public awareness and environmental practices. Of course, with a global company like Samsung, it is much easier to make an impact working with others than trying to do it alone.

“I’m grateful that my job can contribute to making an impact at a global scale with a company that genuinely cares for the environment,” said Jenni. “We have support from our leaders to make environmental sustainability a top priority.”

Jenni is someone who wants to bring her whole self to work, values and all. So what’s the best way to implement a green mindset at work? Jenni highlights the importance of leading and educating by example, especially when it comes to environmental sustainability.

“I always try to integrate environmental sustainability into conversations with my team because our colleagues are also our consumers,” said Jenni. “It is important to patiently explain, educate and build awareness.”

# The Gold Standard for Sustainability

When it comes to working at Samsung, Jenni is constantly looking to tell the next sustainability story that reduces the company’s environmental impact. According to Jenni, Samsung is a leader in innovation, not only within the technology of its products, but also in how the company practices sustainability. For instance, Jenni spoke highly of Samsung’s various ESG initiatives, like “Samsung Gives Week of Service,” where she was able to plant pollinator flowers with her son and help support the bees.

“I love that it’s a sustainability project where we’re able to speak to others and get the word out about sustainable topics,” said Jenni. “What better way is there to create ambassadors for environmental sustainability than by doing activities like this with our children?”

Beyond participating in internal company initiatives, Jenni has also been recognized for her award-winning work for the company. For instance, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) annually presents a Sustainability Materials Management (SMM) Award recognizing excellence in e-waste collection throughout the United States. Jenni has led the Samsung team to win this Gold-Tier award for the past eight consecutive years since the beginning, as Samsung collects and recycles an average of 100 million pounds of e-waste per year, an accumulation of over 1.1 billion pounds in the United States.

Over the years, Jenni and her team have also contributed to Samsung earning multiple U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Awards. She even worked with the EPA to set new criteria for refrigerators, using advanced adaptive compressors and induction cooktops to make them more energy efficient.

“In the long-term, we are looking for new ways that technology can positively impact our consumers and our planet,” said Jenni. “We wanted to be sure that consumers are benefitting from seamless Samsung technology, lowered costs and minimizing their environmental footprint with more sustainable options.”

# ESG From the Inside Out

For Jenni, sustainability is at the heart of her work at Samsung. So, Samsung Newsroom wanted to know how she spent World Environment Day, a holiday known for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment.

For Jenni, she chose to spend time with her family, especially with her son, in the outdoors and appreciate nature up close. During the pandemic, she noticed that many people were spending more in the great outdoors. She, too, wanted to spend time enjoying the environment that her job and her free time focused on defending.

“I took my son to an aquarium, where he not only fell in love with ocean animals, but also learned about environmental issues,” said Jenni. “He discovered that plastic wastes are harmful to marine life, and since then, reducing plastic waste has become a big focus in our household.”

And not to worry — for readers at home, Jenni has her own eco-conscious tips for your everyday life. She recommends that we each change a product or behavior to reduce the use of plastic. This could include avoiding takeout with plastic containers, using reusable grocery bags or switching to hygiene goods made with environmentally friendly packaging.

“It can sometimes be uncomfortable to make a change, but making small, everyday changes can help make a big difference,” said Jenni. “I encourage everyone to make one change today, such as a behavior or product that would reduce your individual environmental footprint.”

In her personal life, Jenni certainly practices what she preaches, living an eco-conscious lifestyle both inside and outside of work. For instance, Jenni does a lot of career mentorship and speaks about sustainability practitioners at Columbia University. As a graduate from the university’s Sustainability Management Program, she has been invited to several career forums to discuss what a sustainability-focused job looks like, especially in the private sector and for large technologies companies, like Samsung.

# Our Planet, Our Future

On this renowned day for environmental action, it is important to remember that a healthy ecosystem can begin at our workplace. Now more than ever, companies must work to improve the quality of our lives, protect our ecosystem and preserve natural resources for future generations. Samsung is doing its part to become a socially responsible place to work by integrating environmental sustainability into every level of the business. We only have one planet Earth, and it’s up to us to care for it.

Jenni Chun is an excellent example of a woman using her passion for educating others on the importance of environmental sustainability to create a greener future for the next generation. From mentoring and providing career advice in her personal time to working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to raise the standard to minimize electronic waste, Jenni is an advocate for positive environmental change.

Underscoring our environmental leadership, Samsung Electronics America today received two 2022 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year Awards from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Samsung honors include our ninth Sustained Excellence Award for Product Brand Owner and our second Partner of the Year Award for Energy Management, recognizing the company’s outstanding contributions to protecting the environment through exceptional product innovations and achievements in operational energy efficiency. These 2022 recognitions demonstrate Samsung’s continued successes in energy efficiency from products to operations, building on the company’s landmark accomplishments in 2021. The latest accolades come on the heels of the rare and prestigious Corporate Commitment Award received in 2021 for Samsung’s long-standing and multi-faceted commitment to demonstrating leadership and partnership across the ENERGY STAR program, mitigating climate change and providing efficient solutions in support of our customers’ goals.

The EPA’s ENERGY STAR program has been America’s resource for saving both energy and money, as well as protecting the climate, for 30 years. As part of its annual ENERGY STAR Awards, the EPA honors businesses and organizations for leading their industries in the creation of energy-efficient products and services, and in the development and adoption of strategies that provide substantial energy savings in buildings.

“Sustainability is core to Samsung’s mission and we have an obligation to help stem the effects of climate change and preserve our planet for future generations. These accolades from the EPA reflect our ongoing efforts to reduce our impact through our efficient ENERGY STAR products, as well as through our reduced energy footprint in the built environment,” said Mark Newton, Head of Corporate Sustainability for Samsung Electronics America. “We’re proud to promote the EPA ENERGY STAR program and are thrilled to be recognized for our leadership in delivering sustainable innovations to our customers and supporting a clean and efficient energy economy in our operations.”

“We know it’s going to take all of us working together to tackle the climate crisis, and the 2022 ENERGY STAR award-winning partners are demonstrating what it takes to build a more sustainable future,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. “These companies are showing once again that taking action in support of a clean energy economy can be good not only for the environment, but also for business and customers.”

The Sustained Excellence Award for Product Brand Owner represents a prominent honor granted by the ENERGY STAR program. It’s awarded to ENERGY STAR partners that have made a long-term commitment to fighting the climate crisis by providing and promoting energy efficient products to consumers and demonstrating leadership in energy efficiency. This marks the ninth year that Samsung has been named an ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence partner in the Product Brand Owner category.

As a global technology leader, Samsung believes that consumers should have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the environment through everyday changes — and those changes include the opportunity to purchase energy efficient products that offer savings on energy bills without sacrificing performance, features or comfort. In 2021, Samsung had 381 ENERGY STAR base models in the U.S., which is an increase of 25% compared to 2020. Moreover, all of Samsung’s PCs, dishwashers, front load clothes washers and air purifiers are ENERGY STAR certified. Samsung is committed to energy efficiency innovation and that is why the company won the 2021 ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award for Advanced Adaptive Compressors in the refrigerator category and the 2022 Emerging Technology Award for Induction Cooking Tops. These awards recognize groundbreaking technologies that advance energy efficiency significantly. Globally, Samsung product efficiency innovations have helped our customers avoid an estimated 301 million tons of CO2 emissions since 2009, the equivalent of removing more than 65 million cars off the road.

The Partner of the Year for Energy Management Award is given to ENERGY STAR partners that can demonstrate excellence in improving the energy performance of buildings and plants through a corporate-wide, portfolio-based energy program. From offices to warehouses and distribution centers, to electronic and appliance labs, Samsung Electronics America has a diverse portfolio of 41 buildings located across the country. As of 2021, the company has received ENERGY STAR Tenant Space recognition for seven leased spaces. As of 2021, this number ranked second nationally for most recognized properties within Tenant Space. As a result, Samsung Electronics America represented about 19% of the total properties recognized nationally within Tenant Space.

In addition to the Tenant Space effort, Samsung is meeting previous commitments for energy demand mitigation by retrofitting facilities with ENERGY STAR certified equipment, fixtures and products, as well as powering all facilities in the U.S., including manufacturing, with 100% renewable energy. Moreover, in 2021, Samsung enjoyed a continued reduction in electricity consumption from 2020 resulting in a 10% reduction in Weather Normalized Site Energy Use Intensity (kBtu/ft2).

Samsung’s commitment to energy efficient products and operations is a critical aspect of the company’s efforts to tackle climate change. The company looks forward to our continued efforts in ensuring consumers can make a meaningful impact on the environment through everyday changes, including by focusing on energy efficiency.

Today the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) presented Samsung with the rare ENERGY STAR Corporate Commitment Award for the company’s longstanding and multifaceted commitment to demonstrating leadership and partnership with ENERGY STAR and mitigating climate change. Addressing the climate crisis requires organizations to take holistic approaches, and this rare and prestigious award was created to recognize the few companies whose cumulative and superior achievements in energy efficiency span the breadth of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR program. In 2021, Samsung is the only company to win the distinction, which was last granted nine years ago.

The Corporate Commitment Award builds on a strong and mutually beneficial relationship between Samsung and the EPA ENERGY STAR program – a relationship that has led Samsung to receive eight Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence awards since 2013. “Samsung is committed to helping mitigate climate change through our products, practices, and operations, especially in the area of energy efficiency,” said KS Choi, President and CEO, Samsung Electronics North America. “We are extremely honored to receive this rare and prestigious award and commit to continuing to raise the bar on energy efficiency as an important part of tackling climate change.”

Through continuous efficiency improvements and changes in distribution, manufacturing, repair and recycling, Samsung is reducing the impact of the devices that customers love and demand. Since 2009, Samsung product efficiency improvements have enabled customers to avoid an estimated 270 million metric tons of CO2 emissions through the use of Samsung products. Those reductions are more than double the amount of GHG emissions that were required to manufacture those products over the same time period. In 2020, Samsung had 303 ENERGY STAR base models, including 100% of tablets, front-load washers and dishwashers, 86% of refrigerators, 78% of top-load washers and 54% of dryers that are ENERGY STAR certified.* Moreover, Samsung advances energy efficiency through innovative cutting-edge products such as our next-generation refrigeration products, which earned the Emerging Technology Award for Advanced Adaptive Compressors in 2020.

Samsung is also committed to reducing the climate impact of its operations and supply chain. Following through on a commitment made in 2018, Samsung uses 100% renewable energy to power its worksites in the US, China and Europe. As a result, Samsung ranks among the top in EPA’s Green Power Partnership program. Furthermore, Samsung partnered with EPA in contributing to the development of the innovative new ENERGY STAR Tenant Space program for energy management improvements by tenants in leased building space, driving the industry forward on efficiency. Samsung 837, the Global Marketing Center for Excellence in New York City, the Samsung Solutions Center in Washington DC, the customer contact center in Simpsonville, SC and Samsung locations in Plano, TX are all ENERGY STAR or Tenant Space recognized. This partnership demonstrates that we are committed to reducing the environmental footprint of our office spaces in addition to our products.

“We are beyond thrilled to receive this tremendous honor from the EPA,” said Mark Newton, Head of Corporate Sustainability for Samsung Electronics America. “We will continue to advance our sustainability efforts across the country as it is more important than ever to support initiatives that mitigate climate change and commit to business practices that will ensure a healthy future for all to enjoy.”

“ENERGY STAR award-winning partners are showing the world that delivering real climate solutions makes good business sense and promotes job growth,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. “Many of them have been doing it for years, inspiring all of us who are committed to tackling the climate crisis and leading the way to a clean energy economy.”

While the ENERGY STAR Corporate Commitment award is a cumulative recognition of a company’s accomplishments, it is also a call to action – driving the awardee to keep pushing forward and setting a benchmark for other industry players to meet. Samsung is committed to continuing its impactful partnership with the EPA and ENERGY STAR in the years to come and looks forward to collaborating with industry peers and competitors to effect change through energy efficiency and mitigate the threat of climate change.

Samsung Electronics America is proud to announce it has received the 2020 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Sustained Excellence Award for continued leadership and superior contributions to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR program. The award recognizes EPA partner businesses and organizations in good standing that demonstrate superior leadership, innovation, and commitment to environmental protection through energy efficiency and ENERGY STAR.

This is Samsung’s 12th Partner of the Year recognition and 7th time achieving the Sustained Excellence Award for its environmental stewardship exhibited through producing energy-efficient appliances and technology as well as for engaging customers, employees and students about the value of environmental protection and energy savings. For Samsung, ENERGY STAR is also a symbol of economic development and investment in the U.S. manufacturing base. At the state-of-the-art facility in Newberry, SC, every washer produced is ENERGY STAR-certified. This includes innovative front load and top load machines that not only save energy but deliver time savings, increased capacity, stronger cleaning performance and stylish design.

“Samsung takes its responsibility to care for our communities and environment seriously and values our partnership with ENERGY STAR,” said Shane Higby, Vice President for Home Appliance Product Marketing at Samsung Electronics America. “While many of the company’s efforts around energy efficiency are focused on manufacturing of home appliances, our work also extends to product training efforts as well as investments in environmental education initiatives. Samsung remains committed to energy efficiency innovation while minimizing our environmental impact.”

As of 2019, 33 of Samsung’s products were designated by the EPA as Most Efficient. Including savings driven by ENERGY STAR certification, overall product efficiency improvements have helped our customers avoid an estimated 243 million tons of CO2 emissions through the use of Samsung products since 2009.

In 2016, Samsung also won the ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award for Innovative Refrigerant Systems and in 2013, Samsung won the ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award for Advanced Clothes Dryers.

“I salute the 2020 ENERGY STAR award winners,” said Anne Idsal, EPA Principal Deputy Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation. “These leaders demonstrate how energy efficiency drives economic competitiveness in tandem with environmental protection.”

The highest honor among ENERGY STAR awards is the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year—Sustained Excellence Award. EPA presents the Sustained Excellence Award to partners that have already received ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year recognition for a minimum of two consecutive years and have gone above and beyond the criteria needed to qualify for recognition. Winners hail from small, family-owned businesses to Fortune 500 organizations—representing energy-efficient products, services, new homes, and buildings in the commercial, industrial, and public sectors.

On April 9, for the sixth year, Samsung Electronics America received the highest honor in the ENERGY STAR Awards category, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 2019 ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award.

The achievement highlights Samsung’s continued efforts in sustainability and the company’s strategic undertaking of various projects in partnership with ENERGY STAR, the first of which was a 12 percent increase in the number of ENERGY STAR-certified products, adding 75 to the product line.

“At Samsung, we have always embraced sustainable innovation and design because we believe that our customers should be able to purchase energy efficient products that offer savings on energy bills without sacrificing performance, features or comfort,” said Shane Higby, Vice President for Home Appliance Product Marketing at Samsung Electronics America. “Samsung invests in ENERGY STAR because consumers demand energy efficient products, consumers recognize the ENERGY STAR logo for innovation in energy efficiency and we are honored our efforts continue to be recognized by the EPA.”

Among the new ENERGY STAR-certified products added in 2018 is the Heat Pump Dryer that uses innovative energy-saving technologies, consisting of moisture sensors that detect when clothes are dry and automatically shuts the dryer off. The Heat Pump Dryer circulates and reheats the air instead of venting air to the outside.

Samsung Electronics today announced that 20 models in its newest refrigeration line have earned the coveted ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA’s ENERGY STAR program is the trusted source for energy-efficient product labeling and consumer education. The Emerging Technology Award recognizes products that are at the forefront of energy conservation and climate protection.

All 20 Samsung refrigerator models, set to be released in 2017, are recognized for the innovative R-600a refrigerant system which meets the EPA’s demanding performance criteria to reduce energy use and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Samsung Electronics is the first manufacturer to receive EPA approval to market full-sized, residential Top Mount Freezer and French Door models using this new technology.

The EPA first awarded the ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award in 2011, and focuses on a different product category or eco-conscious theme each year. Samsung is a two-time winner – in addition to recognition for 2017 refrigerators, the brand received the award in 2013 for its eco-friendly DV457 clothes dryer.

The Road to Energy Savings

Samsung’s new R-600a refrigerant is naturally occurring and climate-friendly, with no ozone depletion potential and very low Global Warming Potential (GWP) rating. R-600a requires less work to be done by the unit’s compressor, which not only reduces energy usage by 6.5% but also makes the refrigerator quieter than previous models.

Samsung developed the technology ahead of planned changes to refrigerant qualifications that EPA looks to influence by 2021. Equipped with the advanced technology, the 2017 award-winning refrigerators met the EPA’s new qualifications of a GWP rating below 15 while producing an energy efficiency gain of 5 percent or higher. Additionally, the R-600a refrigerant has been approved for use in the US market by the EPA’s Significant New Alternative Policy (SNAP) Program.

“Samsung strives to meet the highest environmental standards, and we are proud to be honored by the EPA for our innovative and eco-friendly refrigerator product development,” said Byung-Sam Seo, President of Home Appliances at Samsung Electronics. “The R-600a refrigerant is a game-changer in terms of reducing energy usage, and we are proud of the advancements we’ve made to create more environmentally responsible home appliance products.”

In addition to being energy efficient, Samsung’s 2017 refrigeration line delivers more choice, flexibility and connectivity for consumers today. New internal features such as enhanced precision cooling, flexible storage options and upgraded interior lighting are matched by updates to exterior details like redesigned handles and premium finishes, as well as seamless designs to fit well in any kitchen.

For more, please visit Samsung’s CES booth #15006, on Level 1 of the Central Hall in the Las Vegas Convention Center from January 5-8, 2017.
