Introduced in 2019, the first Galaxy Fold was a completely new form factor that combined the portability of a smartphone with the extensive productivity of a tablet — challenging conventional perceptions of what a smartphone could be. Driven by the bold vision that foldable phones could reconcile two seemingly conflicting demands — large screens and true portability — Samsung looked to other industries for inspiration, engineering a durable hinge and proving that smartphone displays, too, could fold. It was a synthesis of creativity and productivity that unlocked new possibilities — from seamless multitasking on the go to immersive content creation.

But smartphones are constant companions that we tuck into our pockets, use with one hand and take everywhere we go. So it’s only natural that users desire a foldable device that is as easy to carry as it is to use. To that end, Samsung engineers and designers are refining each generation of the Galaxy Z series to be thinner, lighter and more durable than the last.

This year, that journey reaches a new milestone. The newest Galaxy Z series is the thinnest, lightest and most advanced foldable yet — meticulously crafted and built to last.

The latest Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 not only offer intelligent AI features and personalization options but sleeker, more durable displays that stand the test of time.¹ Impossible to be created overnight, these enhancements are a result of continuous efforts from Samsung developers to provide the best display experience possible.

Samsung Newsroom spoke with Jason Noh, a developer in the Display Group, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics, to learn more about the innovative foldable displays in the Galaxy Z series.

The First Foldable Display Marks the Beginning of Innovation

Samsung’s foldable innovation dates back to 2008 when the company first embarked on foldable display research. The journey toward this new technology was not easy for the display team as the screen needed to be folded while maintaining optimal display quality and functionality.

“We carried out studies on foldable displays and conducted countless experiments way before our first foldable device launched,” explained Noh. “Although we all shared a strong desire to become the pioneer of foldable smartphones, it wasn’t easy. Our team had to create a high-quality display that could be folded but resistant to debris — which meant we had to change the plate supporting the display.”

To achieve this, the developers carried out extensive research to lay the groundwork for Samsung’s first foldable smartphone. This included inventing a metal plate that protected the display from external substances and developing a Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (PSA) that helped the display panel maintain its folding capabilities in various conditions and environments. With that, Samsung unveiled the first Galaxy Fold in 2019.

Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6: An Accumulation of Mastery in Display Technology

In the six years following the introduction of the initial Galaxy Z Fold, Samsung devoted to providing the best product experience by focusing on three essential factors — a crystal-clear display, durability and productivity. Through a deep understanding of consumer insights accumulated over the years, the Galaxy Z series has constantly evolved to provide new features. This year, the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 have once again exceeded consumer expectations through an enhanced screen, improved durability and maximized productivity.

An Immersive Viewing Experience

The Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 boast an unmatched viewing experience thanks to their large foldable screens. In particular, the Galaxy Z Flip6’s clear display integrates Samsung’s proprietary Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) material with Infinity Flex Display — a technology first adopted in the Galaxy Z Flip.

“We wanted to bring the same touchscreen experience from bar-type smartphones to foldable devices. This continued commitment to a better user experience led to Samsung’s first foldable glass display,” explained Noh. “With the adoption of UTG, we were able to deliver a clearer display — complete with a premium look and feel that had yet to be seen on a foldable smartphone. UTG has been used ever since.”

The Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 displays are each equipped with a new Protect Layer structure to reduce screen crease compared to their predecessors. Increased adhesive strength in the Galaxy Z Fold6 between display and the set creates a shallower crease to form the flattest display of any Galaxy Z Fold series yet.

To deliver a more immersive display experience, the Galaxy Z Fold6 offers a brighter display of up to 2,600nit. The width of the screen has been expanded by 1.0 mm when folded and 2.7 mm increase when unfolded while the length has been reduced by 1.4 mm. This change in screen size offers enhanced screen usability to display more information horizontally for greater convenience.²

Enhanced Durability Meets Foldables

The displays on the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 are the most durable to date in the Galaxy Z series. Shear Thickening Fluid (STF), a new material that adapts to different amounts of pressure and provides resistance to deformations from impacts, was added to the Protect Layer for enhanced display durability.

“STF has been introduced to the latest foldable series to meet the high standards expected by Galaxy users. As a result of this effort, the durability of the foldable panel has been enhanced greatly compared to the previous series,” explained Noh. In addition, the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 come with the water-resistant features³ first implemented on the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 — the world’s first water-resistant foldable smartphones. Applied to both the outer part of the display and the hinge, a rubber band surrounds the outer part of the display to prevent liquid from entering and damaging the display.

The latest Galaxy Z series foldables are resistant to dust as well. Sweeper technology in each device utilizes delicately cut optical fibers to protect the display from any external dust and debris that could enter through the gaps between the front of the device and the hinge housing. This sturdy protection from external dust and water gives users peace of mind.

Maximized Productivity With S Pen

While the Galaxy Z Fold series offers several multitasking features via its ultra-large screen, the developers contemplated how the big screen could be utilized more efficiently and conveniently. To enhance multitasking and productivity, the S Pen was adopted for the Galaxy Z Fold series. Now, Galaxy AI features on the Galaxy Z Fold6 are elevated to the next level with the S Pen.

When the S Pen was first introduced to the Galaxy Z Fold, the metal plate material had to be changed to carbon fiber so the digitizers that identify the S Pen could function without interruptions. Located on the left and right side of the display, the digitizers also needed to sense the S Pen on the screen’s folding part with no additional components. Developers overcame this challenge by creating a new solution that allowed the digitizers to recognize the S Pen on the folded part of the screen based on sophisticated calculations.

With the S Pen, users can utilize productivity features including Circle to Search and Note Assist more smoothly on the Galaxy Z Fold6’s massive screen. These advancements are the result of the developers’ efforts to provide a differentiated device experience.

An Endless Journey Toward the Perfect Display

Despite making significant progress in foldable screens, the Display Group refuses to stop. The developers strive to continue improving display quality.

“As a pioneer of the foldable smartphone, our team has accumulated knowledge and experience on what users expect from this form factor,” said Noh. “To meet those expectations, we will not stop our journey toward the perfect display experience. The Galaxy Z series will constantly undergo improvements to prove Samsung’s title as a trailblazer in foldable smartphones.”

As people become increasingly more health-focused, tech industry realized the value in pursuing projects that help individuals monitor their health and fitness. Principal Engineer Jinwoo Song from Samsung Research’s Data Research Team explained how Samsung Health Stack project helps developers and engineers optimize app development and more.

Q1. What does Samsung Health Stack do and what benefits does it ultimately provide?

Samsung Health Stack is an open source project that provides help in conducting research related to digital health using wearable devices, developing applications needed and creating tools for backend server and analysis in Android and Wear OS environment. By utilizing Samsung Health Stack, IT developers and engineers can save time and cost needed for developing the right environment, and researchers can focus more on conducting research studies that utilize new digital data. I believe that such convenience for development will be a great foundation for various forms of digital health care research and new data-based technologies.

Q2. What was the focus of the open source when designing Samsung Health Stack?

We designed it by analyzing the user experience of everyone involved in healthcare research so that the solution can accommodate the entire process of recruiting participants, collecting data and analyzing data. When there were some difficulties during the course of the development, we found solutions through health care-related cooperation with many research institutions.

In addition, we made effort to provide the structure that can continue to be scaled up to handle new forms of data and devices that become the interest of digital health researchers. In particular, we’ve designed the structure so that only certain necessary parts can be selected and expanded for use in order to enable application in various cases that go beyond clinical research, such as the area of care, etc.

Q3. What do you think the direction of development will be going forward for data-based health-care technologies?

Due to the technological advancement including AI, and the transition to aging society, the digital technology that centers on consumers and data is becoming more important in the field of health care. In order to respond to such changes, it is important to have the capability to safely manage and precisely analyze various data on users.

We believe that a world in which everyone will be able to receive customized, optimal health care solutions with data on users’ everyday life will come in the future. We’ll continue to make effort to develop technologies and products to make this possible, and we look forward to seeing many developers participate in this effort.

In order to create the best product experience, Samsung’s One UI platform offers a simple and intuitive interface across all of its devices, putting the user at the center of its unified device experience. Content Strategist Josh Ross from Samsung’s Core UX Group of MX Business shared the inspiration behind One UI and how it was created with users in mind.

Q1. What is One UI and what experiences does it provide to users?

One UI is the unified platform for Samsung Galaxy products, from phones and tablets to watches and Galaxy Books. It creates a single, seamless experience that empowers users to get the most from their Samsung products.

Q2. To create an intuitive and easy-to-use interface for users, One UI adheres to four key principles: simplicity, effortlessness, consistency and authenticity. Can you explain why these principles are important for development of One UI and how you think this enhances the mobile experience for users?

You need principles so you can be sure your design is heading in the right direction. We’ve chosen these four principles because they put the focus on the user, which is what we always want to do. Simplicity helps users focus on what matters. Effortlessness means that you don’t have to struggle to get things done. Consistency means that things work the way you expect them to, which helps to make things effortless. And authenticity is about creating experiences that feel natural, like a part of your own self-expression. When these principles come together, the result can be very powerful but also subtle. You don’t always notice all the work that goes into the design, and that’s actually good. The best design is almost invisible.

Q3. Why are partnerships an essential part of One UI? What are the benefits of partnerships for One UI development?

Partnerships are a huge part of the One UI experience. As good as Samsung is, we need the insight and expertise of others to deliver the best experience to users. Partnerships make apps like SmartThings and Samsung Wallet possible, so that you can do amazing things like control your car or your lights, make payments, board an airplane and so much more, right from inside One UI. Partnerships enrich our Samsung Health content with fitness expertise about everything from sleep coaching to body composition to mindfulness. Partnerships add flavor to your chats with GIFs from Giphy and Tenor, stickers, fun camera features on Snapchat and much more. Partnerships like the Global Goals app, a collaboration between Samsung and the UN, help bring awareness to important causes.

We want to empower our users to do things the way they want, with the apps and services they love. Partnerships are a huge part of that.

Q4. Going forward, what are some things users can expect from Samsung’s One UI?

We have a lot of things we’re announcing at SDC this year, so I don’t want to give everything away, but you can always expect further refinement and improvement. We look at everything from icons and animations to how you organize and find things and so much more. We’re learning more and more from our users about how the foldable experience changes things, so keep looking for exciting developments in the area of unique features for the Galaxy Flip and Galaxy Fold.

Samsung has also partnered with HealthTap to provide telemedicine services through its Smart TVs. Samsung’s Tizen, an open-source operating system, helped developers optimize the service for use on Smart TVs. Sean Park, Senior Product Manager from the Experience Planning Group of Visual Display Business, explained more about accessing telemedicine through Samsung’s Smart TVs.

Q1. How did Tizen help with the development of this service?

Samsung Electronics’ smart operating system (OS) Tizen provided the grounds for easy navigation on the large screen display. Tizen is very quick to deploy as evidenced by what we were able to achieve in three months’ time.

Q2. What are the benefits of accessing telemedicine services through Samsung Smart TVs?

Everything nowadays has gone remote. We want to provide Samsung users with a more convenient way to access medical care, which is telemedicine.

Samsung’s collaboration with HealthTap allows you to see a doctor through a large screen from the comfort of your home, creating a more immersive telehealth experience. If you want to access services including mental health counseling, you can do that with Samsung Smart TVs. For those who are a bit older and whose vision makes it difficult to use a small mobile screen, or for those who need to hold small children while consulting a doctor, they can easily access telehealth services through Samsung Smart TVs. We want everyone to be able to easily see a doctor from home, which we believe is not only convenient but necessary.

Ultra-wideband technology (UWB) has been recently gaining more and more attention in the smart device industry. Principal Engineer Haeyoung Jun from Samsung Research’s Standards Research Team talked about the importance of standardization of UWB and how it could shape the future of the industry.

Q1. What is the role of the FiRa Consortium that Samsung Electronics established in 2019 with key industry players, and what specific activities does it do?

The FiRa Consortium develops the interoperability standard and certification program to enable consumers to use services powered by Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology in smart devices across devices made by different manufacturers.

After the FiRa Consortium was initially established by only a few companies, including Samsung Electronics, there are now more than 115 member companies participating in defining the interoperability standard together. Furthermore, FiRa is exploring various applications that utilize UWB, and is cooperating with multiple standard organizations across various industry verticals for the standardization of these applications.

Q2. We’d like to know why UWB technology is gaining attraction again recently and how it is moving forward.

As many service providers and manufacturers investigate use scenarios utilizing relative location information obtained by direct communication among devices without heavy infrastructures, the barrier to implementing UWB technology and applications have been lowered. Along with Samsung Electronics, global companies are also implementing UWB into their devices. As the number of UWB enabled products increases in the market, there will be motivation to install UWB infrastructures as well. We anticipate that, if just one or two game-changing UWB applications emerge in the market, the UWB ecosystem will expand rapidly.

Q3. We’d like to know what the new era of wireless communications envisioned through UWB technology standardization would look like in detail.

UWB technology allows your own devices to detect the location, including distance and direction, of other UWB devices in proximity. It also enables the secure data transactions among devices as well as secure internal interfaces, therefore UWB can provide different type of location-based services that GPS is unable to. For instances, UWB brings the same effect as tagging NFC to a reader even with the smartphone placed in a pocket or bag. With the standardized UWB technology, consumers will be able to access new convenient services across multiple verticals.

When Samsung Electronics revealed its first prototype of a flexible display back in 2011, few people realized they were witnessing a glimpse into the mobile industry’s future. Now, a decade later, Samsung has shipped 4 times more foldable devices in 2021 than in 2020, exceeding the three-fold market growth that analysts expected.¹

Consumer enthusiasm for Samsung foldables is exemplified by the success of the Galaxy Z series. In the first month since launch, the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 exceeded total accumulative sales of Samsung foldable devices in 2020.

With foldable smartphone shipments predicted to grow tenfold by 2023,² let’s take a look at the key moments, top innovations and important partnerships that have helped make foldable devices the next big thing.

Bringing Foldables to Consumers Around the World

Samsung may have first introduced the concept of foldable displays in 2011, but it would take over a decade to bring foldable devices to consumers around the world.

The next major milestone came in 2019, when Samsung finally brought its foldable vision to reality with the Galaxy Fold, its first foldable device. Soon after that came the Galaxy Z Flip. A sleek clamshell design – a throwback to flip phones of yore – made the Galaxy Z Flip an instant icon.

After a decade of progress and three generations of innovation, the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 brought enhanced durability and an improved user experience to foldables. Not only have they set a new standard in the industry, but they rekindled consumer interest in smartphones in general.

Innovations Behind the Technology

From creating new materials and methods to overcoming mechanical challenges, creating the foldable category required Samsung to reimagine the smartphone from the inside out.

From the onset, Samsung engineers understood that the key to creating a new category would be inventing a range of new technologies to ensure the devices would meet the expectations of global consumers.

The Infinity Flex Display and Samsung UTG, for example, enabled the world’s first folding glass display. While its screen may be a continuous piece of glass, a foldable’s body features two distinct components. This unique structure meant that in order to maintain a design slim enough for daily use, engineers would have to completely rethink the placement of internal components. That challenge included designing a new internal cooling system as well as a dual-battery system with technology that optimizes multiple power sources as one.

To ensure that the devices would be capable of withstanding hundreds of thousands of folds, a Hideaway Hinge mechanism was designed with Sweeper technology to help keep out dust and dirt particles. The hinge also added a new layer of functionality to Samsung foldables, allowing them to stand on their own, which makes them perfect for watching content, making video calls, or taking hands-free selfies.

Samsung’s dedication to creating new foldable innovations enabled it to achieve yet another major milestone in 2021 with the release of the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 – the first foldables to receive an IPX8 water resistance rating.

But the features that set Samsung foldables apart aren’t all hidden beneath the surface. With App Continuity – a responsive UI that delivers seamless transitions between folded and unfolded modes – and features like Multi-Active Window and Flex mode, Samsung foldables have unlocked new ways for us to work, play and express ourselves.

Driving Consumer Demand for Foldable Devices

This unprecedented push in innovation has sparked a surging demand for foldable devices, bringing more users to the Galaxy family than ever before. Compared to the Galaxy Note20, Samsung has seen a 150 percent³ increase in consumers who switched smartphone brands for the Galaxy Z Flip3, and a 140 percent increase compared to the Galaxy S21.

A simple explanation for this massive increase is that both Galaxy Z series devices offer distinct features that appeal to specific customer groups in ways that no other smartphones have before.

A buyer survey conducted by Samsung revealed that a stylish design, portability and an innovative folding form factor were the top drivers behind purchases of the Galaxy Z Flip3. The ability to use the cover screen without opening the device was another important factor for those who value privacy, as well as those who want to regulate their screen time to manage their mental health. Buyers of the Galaxy Z Fold3, meanwhile, reported being drawn to its large screen for viewing content, multitasking capabilities and productivity features, including the S Pen.⁴ At the end of the day, it’s clear that both devices are giving consumers more incentive than ever to switch to a foldable, even if it means changing brands or operating systems.

Pioneering the Foldable Future

As more consumers become aware of foldables’ incredible potential, interest in the category will continue to grow. With a variety of innovations set to make their way to consumers in the coming years, Samsung will continue to lead the foldable category with even more pioneering technology.

To achieve this goal, Samsung is heavily investing in R&D while openly collaborating with app developers and industry partners such as Google.

For years, Samsung and Google have been collaborating to make the foldable experience scalable by providing Android developers with the necessary framework and resources. In 2021, the companies announced guidelines for creating apps for large-screen and foldable devices, building on Google’s work to optimize its most popular apps – such as Gmail, YouTube, Duo and Maps – for foldable form factors. Going forward, Samsung will continue to work with partners and developers to develop technologies that will steer the future of the mobile industry.

In establishing an entirely new mobile category a decade ago, Samsung raised the bar for mobile innovation. As it looks toward the next decade and beyond, the company will continue to reinvent the mobile experience to change what’s possible as they unfold.

What’s more, according to a survey conducted just last month, half of all U.S. consumers are interested in buying a foldable phone as their next device.⁵

The global outlook is just as impressive. This year alone, the foldables market is expected to triple over last year⁶ — a year in which Samsung accounted for three out of every four foldable smartphones shipped worldwide.⁷

While many are beginning to see all the possibilities of foldables, this isn’t the first time Samsung has introduced a new form factor that changed the game.

When Samsung first pioneered large screen smartphones over a decade ago, we saw how they enabled people to do more with their devices, from gaming to streaming to working. From improved productivity capabilities to unique camera experiences, the latest update¹ promises to take the Galaxy Fold to the next level. Here’s everything you need to know about the update.

Power Up Your Productivity

Whether you are multitasking or working on the go, the latest update helps you get things done faster with the Galaxy Fold.

Instead of spending time finding the apps you need, App Pair lets you launch up to three of your favorite apps together in your preferred split screen layout.

This feature can be accessed via the Edge Panel, which combines the Multi-Window Tray with Edge Panel for improved convenience. All you need to do is swipe the side of the screen² to see up to 22 of your favorite apps. The arrangement of the Multi-Active Window layout can now also be done horizontally, giving you more flexibility for multitasking.

If you need more screen space to work with, the updated Samsung DeX lets you easily connect the Galaxy Fold to a Smart TV wirelessly.³ All you need to do is tap on the Samsung DeX icon in the quick panel.

Once the two devices are connected, you can customize the second screen to suit your needs with screen zoom and various font size options. You can even use the Galaxy Fold as a touch pad to control the second display with multi-finger gestures.

Maximum Flexibility for Your Shoots

The Galaxy Fold’s unique form factor is designed to help you capture photos and videos exactly the way you want. The latest update brings even more flexibility to this innovative camera experience.

Shooting with Auto framing is like having a dedicated cameraman always by your side. Depending on how many people are in front of the camera, the feature automatically zooms in or out to ensure the Galaxy Fold captures everything. It can even track motion to keep the subject centrally framed.

Capture View Mode gives you the option to check your shots as you shoot. It shows you up to five of the latest photos or videos on the left side of the Main Screen, while giving you a preview of your next shot on the other half.

Dual Preview enhances collaboration between the subject and the photographer by showing a preview of the image on both the Cover and Main Screen of the Galaxy Fold. This feature also works with video and can be activated in Pro Video mode.

The latest update lets you maximize the power of the Galaxy Fold’s rear camera, even when you are taking selfies. Simply open the Camera app on the Cover Screen and activate Rear Cam Selfie. This feature allows you to use the high-resolution rear camera and its wide range of advanced functions for selfies.

Pro Video Mode on the Galaxy Fold now comes with more shooting (21:9 ratio and 24fps video) and assistant functions (histogram, focus peaking), while Single Take lets you capture up to 15 seconds of content to deliver a selection of best moments in photos and video.

Stay Seamlessly Connected

Forget about repeating long, complicated Wi-Fi passwords to your friends and family. With the Galaxy Fold, you can now directly share the password of the Wi-Fi you are connected to trusted Galaxy devices that are near you.

The updated Wi-Fi feature can also show you the speed of nearby connections (Very Fast, Fast, Normal Slow) to help you easily find one that’s suitable.

The IDEA 2020 awards for Samsung include not only the top design awards for creative, cutting-edge creations, but products spanning across multiple categories, showcasing Samsung’s excellence in consumer lifestyle designs with elegant aesthetics, as well as interactive and sustainable designs that reflect social values and broad spectrum of professional expertise.

IDEA, hosted by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), has been held annually since 1980. Widely viewed as the most influential design awards in North America, IDEA considers design innovation, benefit to user and benefit to society as part of its criteria for selecting its awardees.

BESPOKE Family Hub UX won Gold for delivering user-centric experience and innovation. Based on consumer-driven insight, the UX allows users to share and create photos and recipes through the refrigerator screen. Additionally, connectivity with mobile apps enables consumers to enjoy remote access regardless of their location.

BESPOKE Refrigerator won Silver for its customizable modular design which allows users to choose colors, materials and types of the refrigerator fit for individual lifestyles and preferences. BESPOKE Refrigerator has already won a Gold award at International Forum (iF) Design Award 2020.

The IDEA 2020 jury honored Samsung with ‘Best-in-Show’, a special award for BESPOKE Family Hub UX and BESPOKE Refrigerator, recognizing Samsung’s achievements in consumer-centric design excellence.

Samsung’s Upcycling Solution for TV Packaging received a Silver award for its customizable packaging box. Samsung adopted upcycling into packaging materials of its lifestyle TVs – The Frame, The Serif and The Sero. The product packaging was designed to encourage consumers to upcycle the boxes and create innovative pieces of small furniture that suit individual needs, such as a cat tower or a TV stand. The packaging won 2020 CES Innovation Awards for its innovative concept, contribution to environmental protection and raising of awareness for recycling and upcycling.

In addition, Q950TS, a QLED 8K TV maximizing screen immersion with Infinity Screen, and The Serif Visual Identity System, which illustrates sophisticated visual strategies targeting the millennial generation, also won Silver awards.

The following received Bronze awards: Galaxy Fold, a foldable smartphone that offers new experience; Infinite Line Oven, a built-in kitchen that delivers sleek premium design; The Sero Visual Identity System that demonstrates bold and intense graphic with new brand visual strategies targeting the millennial generation; and Inclusive IoT, an advanced design concept utilizing AI Sound Recognition for helping people with hearing loss.

“Design increasingly values interaction between products and user experiences,” said Dontae Lee, Executive Vice President and the Head of Corporate Design Center at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung will continue to provide meaningful customer experiences and sustainable values with innovative technologies and differentiated designs.”

The IDEA 2020 Ceremony was held virtually on September 16. The International Design Conference is also being held virtually for two days from September 17 to 18. Felix Heck, vice president and the head of Samsung Design Europe, is scheduled to give a presentation titled ‘Design for Resonance’ at the event.

Now you’ll never have to miss a beat with PlayGalaxy Link, a streaming service available from the Galaxy Store on the Galaxy Note10 that allows you to bring your PC games with you on the go.

The new service goes beyond cloud gaming, which has dominated the industry in 2019, by allowing you to stream your game library to your device if you already have a powerful PC. With PlayGalaxy Link, Samsung is achieving a new level of gaming, enabling you to create a customizable streaming experience by connecting the Galaxy Note10 to your own powerful PC and the games you already own.

Introducing PlayGalaxy Link

Whether you’re in transit to work, outside in the park, or chilling on the couch, you can use the PlayGalaxy Link app on the Galaxy Note10 to connect to your PC using Wi-Fi or mobile data (4G/5G) and pick up right where you left off in the game.

When accuracy matters most, lag and latency will be less of a problem as PlayGalaxy Link is designed with a P2P connection which provides you with simplicity for better performance without a relay server. The service also uses Adaptive FPS to ensure better connectivity even in poor network environments. However, it should be noted that speeds are dependent on your network connection and reliability will vary depending on local network providers and regional stability. You will also find major improvements to the longevity of their gaming sessions and device performance.

Without the need for local storage or graphics performance, you get high-fidelity gaming while only using about as much battery as streaming video. Since PlayGalaxy Link uses a PC to power your gaming session, the Galaxy Note10 avoids becoming hot and dropping frame rates as a result. PlayGalaxy Link is also compatible with all graphics card manufacturers, allowing you to get the best experience out of their gaming stations when linked to the app.

Best of all, PlayGalaxy Link is expanding the opportunities for gaming on the go by opening up a library of PC exclusive titles for your mobile device. Whether you’re into casual side-scrollers or hardcore RPGs, you can extend your gameplay with both a game controller¹ or a traditional keyboard connection.

Setting Up PlayGalaxy Link

Getting started with PlayGalaxy Link is easy. All you have to do to get set up is install the PlayGalaxy Link app² on both your PC and Galaxy Note10, add your games, and then start streaming. For a better experience, you can connect wired or Bluetooth-enabled controllers to your device.

Since the app uses your computer to stream games, the bulk of the processing is done on your home computer. As a result, the better the specs your computer has, the better your PlayGalaxy Link experience will be. The PlayGalaxy Link Beta has launched and is now available in South Korea, US, UK, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Singapore, and Russia. In addition to the Galaxy Note10, Galaxy S10 owners can now download the MR software update to access PlayGalaxy Link. The update will be coming to the Galaxy Fold, Galaxy S9, Galaxy Note9, and Galaxy A90 in early December 2019.

Samsung began the task of designing the Galaxy Fold with the goal of making users’ mobile lives more convenient, taking into consideration how a new folding mechanism would accommodate people’s daily experiences. Read on for a closer look at how Samsung brought the Galaxy Fold to life.

Encountering New Form Factors

As the day-to-day lifestyles of consumers have become more diversified, so too have their needs, and the technology they use, of course, must keep up. The Galaxy Fold features an all-new form factor with its Infinity Flex Display, which provides the most natural holding experience yet for the user. The Galaxy Fold design team started with the very basics of ‘folding’ and what that action means in everyday life, studying how various things fold and unfold as well as what advantages each folding process offers. People in fact fold and unfold all manner of objects in their day-to-day lives, from their books to their wallets.

The design team worked closely with the engineering team in order to find the most convenient and aesthetically pleasing design for a folding device. The team constructed over 1,000 prototypes using a wide array of materials, including foam board and various fabrics, and eventually settled on an in-folding design.

Optimizing for the Foldable Experience

The Galaxy Fold features design elements that offer consumers a user experience that is as familiar as it is convenient. When incorporating the device’s proprietary new technologies, from the Infinity Flex Display to the hinge, Samsung developed a design that would ensure easy one-handed operation, as well as a comfortable and immersive full-screen experience.

Design elements of the Galaxy Fold ensure this seamless ease of use. The device’s large Infinity Flex Display, measuring 7.3 inches when unfolded, was designed to be the optimum size for carrying around when folded. The inward-folding hinge not only provides an intuitive and familiar folding sensation, but also helps protect the display. Additionally, with a total of six lenses across the device, users are able to take pictures no matter how they are holding the device.

The Galaxy Fold’s slim and ergonomic design provides users with a comfortable grip. The device’s size and ratio has been optimized for one or two-handed use, aligning with the unique capabilities of the Galaxy Fold, such as multitasking with Multi-Active Window. The front and back of the device, when folded (or, the entire back of the device when unfolded) have the same volume, shape and dimensions, with even distribution of weight across the left and right sides of the device so it feels balanced and natural to hold. Furthermore, the placement of the fingerprint scanner on the side of the Galaxy Fold is aligned with where the user’s thumb falls, so unlocking the phone is as intuitive as unfolding it.

Future-Proof Design, Eco-Friendly Packaging

Not only is the Galaxy Fold designed with a unique foldable usability, it has a premium appearance, too. Samsung refined its design precisely. In order to create a seamless look for the device’s cover from the display to the edge of the device itself, Samsung applied to sophisticated process to the front metal frame.

Finally, in line with the Galaxy Fold’s philosophy of providing users with a premium lifestyle experience, the design process does not stop at the device itself. As a finishing touch, the packaging that the Galaxy Fold comes in has been created using eco-friendly materials – the first Samsung product to have this applied to all packaging parts. In another first for a Samsung product, the box has a multi-layer design, so that the full-screen experience of the Galaxy Fold can begin from the moment the user opens the box.

Creating Opportunities for Developers through Open, Scalable AI and IoT Platforms

ES Chung, EVP and Head of Software and AI, Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics, outlines plans to enrich Bixby to offer users “countless new ways to integrate intelligence into everything you do.”

To help consumers discover new ways Bixby can work with them to get things done more quickly and easily, Samsung launched Bixby Marketplace earlier this year, creating a way for developers to introduce their Bixby capsules to millions of Bixby users. In the past six months, the size of the Bixby developer community has doubled. And starting in 2020, the Bixby Marketplace will expand gradually, enabling developers to offer their services across more Samsung devices.

To make it easier for developers to create new experiences on its AI platform and ensure consumers have more intuitive experience, Samsung announced enhanced capabilities in the Bixby Developer Studio at SDC19.

• New Bixby Templates makes it easy for developers to create capsules using pre-existing forms so that they don’t have to start from scratch.
• Enhanced Bixby Views enable developers to build capsules with a consistent design even beyond smartphones—to televisions, tablets, smart watches and refrigerators.
• Developers can now register their capsules under Natural Language Categories. When users ask Bixby for help related to a category—such as radio, news, or navigation—Bixby suggests a capsule that can help them get what they need more quickly and easily, even without having to call out exact name of the capsule.

More consumers than ever are seeing how seamlessly connected devices and services can make everyday life easier. Developers can scale their device and service offerings through Samsung’s IoT platform, SmartThings. Already, developers and partners have brought connected experiences to more than 45 million monthly active users and thousands of compatible devices, and the platform is expected to grow further with the Work as a SmartThings Hub (WASH) program, which allows partners like network operators to embed SmartThings Hub software into their devices.

To help developers build on and integrate existing devices with the SmartThings platform, Samsung announced new capabilities for developers:

• The new Rules API brings to life more automated smart home experiences to reflect individual daily routines across a broad range of SmartThings devices.
• Samsung is launching the SmartThings Device SDK Beta program in early 2020 to enable more third-party manufacturers to create SmartThings-compatible devices.

Inspiring Developers with New Experiences Across Devices

Samsung continued to refine the mobile experience to allow users to focus on what matters most to them. End-to-End Security Built in Every Solution and Experience

Samsung’s mobile business has kept up with successful launches in the Galaxy series. Previously, you might have had to turn right back around and find the nearest computer, but with the Galaxy Fold, you can work on any urgent email right where you stand.

Thanks to the Galaxy Fold’s spacious display, once you’ve opened up the device, you can easily simultaneously read your email and open up your chosen document editing app to quickly and easily do what you need to. Harnessing Multi Window means that not only can you switch between your mail app and document app without losing any crucial information, but you can also easily and efficiently message colleagues for clarification, as well, thanks to Multi Window’s three window support.

Thanks to Multi Window, Galaxy Fold users can simultaneously open up their Calendar, Samsung Notes and document viewer apps and work seamlessly between them – all while not missing a beat of what is being discussed. 1. First Introductions

The premium package your Galaxy Fold comes in is made entirely from eco-friendly materials, and from the moment you open the box, your experience with the device begins. The device is laid out flat for your first folding experience with your Galaxy Fold.

But ahead of getting completely hands-on with the product, be sure to check out the product usage instructions that come attached to the display. These provide you with an introduction to the Galaxy Fold’s innovative folding mechanism and outline how to make the most of the device’s groundbreaking two displays.

2. Getting a Grip

As with any mobile device, a key part of being able to enjoy your Galaxy Fold comfortably is being able to grip it properly. The Galaxy Fold has been developed with an ergonomic design that lets you easily use with one hand when folded, and is narrower than conventional smartphones – 62.8mm in width and 160.9mm in length – for maximum ease of use. An identical volume and design have been applied to all four sides of the device to provide the best grip whether you are holding it folded or unfolded.

You will notice that the volume keys, power key and fingerprint recognition sensors are located on the right side of the device for convenience. These keys can be customized according to your own usage preferences – pressing the power key twice defaults to launch camera, and long pressing the power key launches Bixby. These settings can be changed to open your preferred apps (Settings > Advanced features > Bixby). You can also register up to four fingers or thumbprints for unlocking the device for ease of use from any angle, whether you are right or left-handed.

One of the bonuses of having two displays in one device is that you can set two custom home screens for both the cover display and the main display, so that the most useful apps for one-handed use and also for multitasking use are always at your fingertips when you fold or unfold your device. The location of the screen’s navigation bar can also be set to the middle, left or right-hand side of the unfolded display for a personalized user experience (Settings > Display > My navigation bar > Adjustment).

3. Learning How to Switch Seamlessly

Once you’ve customized the Galaxy Fold’s user settings to your own needs and usage preferences, it is time to take advantage of the phone’s pioneering user experience and begin seamlessly switching apps and content from the cover display to the main display and back again.

App Continuity, part of the brand new UX developed specifically for the Galaxy Fold, means that you can check an email notification on the front screen and open up the main display to reveal a large keyboard for easier replying. This works both ways between the two displays; if you’ve read an e-book or e-mail on the cover display, you can open up the device to its unfolded, expansive main display and continue reading seamlessly. Similarly, you can take an in-depth look at a navigation app on the main display to work out directions, then fold the phone and have your route switch over without interruption to the cover display for easy reference while walking (Settings > Display > Continue apps on front screen).

4. Mastering a Versatile Camera

When it comes to taking photos with your Galaxy Fold, you are able to take great photos at any time thanks to the six cameras it has on its front, back and main display. For taking a quick selfie, the front camera on the cover display is the perfect choice, and then when you’re looking to capture a memory with a larger number of people, the dual cameras of the main display are able to capture everything and everyone in a live focus selfie – all without a selfie stick.

Furthermore, users can enjoy an expansive, immersive picture-taking experience when harnessing the Galaxy Fold’s rear triple camera thanks to the size of the viewfinder on the Galaxy Fold’s unfolded screen. For effortless picture-taking regardless of the orientation of your device, the Galaxy Fold’s shutter button will automatically move to an optimized location when you turn your device to and from portrait or landscape – you can even press and drag the button to place it somewhere else yourself.

5. Harnessing the Power of an Immersive Display

When it comes to enjoying your favorite content, be sure to test out the immersive gaming experience the Galaxy Fold provides if that’s your thing, and try out watching high-quality videos on the unfolded main display to experience just how expansive it is.

With the Galaxy Fold, your viewing experience is taken to another level thanks to the real estate of the main screen, but the device’s size is not the only thing bringing you such a cinematic dynamic experience. The Galaxy Fold features a Dynamic AMOLED Display, with HDR10+ color and Dynamic Tone Mapping for heightened contrast. Furthermore, while immersing yourself in your favorite content and games, the Galaxy Fold’s TÜV Rheinland-certified Eye Comfort display reduces blue light emissions without sacrificing picture quality.

6. Multitasking Like a Pro

Multitasking has become part of our daily lives as we constantly find ourselves switching between apps in order to get everything done. The Galaxy Fold lets you enjoy this experience all on one screen device thanks to its Multi-Active Window feature, which allows you to use multiple active apps simultaneously on the display for the first time on a smartphone.

By swiping the right-hand side of the main unfolded display, you can access the Multi Window Tray, which lists both your recently used apps as well as a ‘View All’ button to see all apps that support Multi Window. You can also customize your most-used apps within the Tray (Settings > Advanced features > Multi window tray). You can then drag and drop up to three apps into the desired position and order on the display, and even then toggle the size of the app’s window by pressing the handle at the top each window for further customization.

But this PC-like multitasking experience does not stop there for the busy user. As well as three Multi Windows, the Galaxy Fold also supports up to five pop-up windows, meaning that on days where there’s a lot to be done, you can work on up to eight applications simultaneously. To access these pop-up windows, open up the Multi Window Tray, drag the app you need to the center of the display. These pop-up windows can be made transparent so as not to hinder your use of the Multi-Active Windows behind it.

7. Next-Level Productivity

Now that you’ve mastered multitasking like a pro on your Galaxy Fold, there are a few other next-level features those who need to use their device for both work and play. The Galaxy Fold comes with dual messenger feature, meaning that you can keep your work and personal messages in separate windows thanks to the multi-window functionality of the Galaxy Fold.

Alarms and notifications can be customized for new windows by dragging them while multitasking, meaning that once a notification message appears at the top of the screen, you can easily and quickly drag it down into a Multi-Active Window to seamlessly reply without interrupting your other app activity (Settings > Advanced features > Smart pop-up view).

Efforts to design this software experience for the Galaxy Fold began at the framework level in April 2018. As part of this process, Samsung developed a whole new UX and collaborated closely with Google to provide integrated OS support from Android.

Bigger is Better

The Galaxy Fold’s spacious, 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Display is proof of the old adage that “bigger is better.”

As Jeong explained, one of the biggest realizations that the Galaxy Fold’s development team came to when testing the device was just how transformative a foldable device can have on the mobile experience.

“Before the development of the Galaxy Fold, I had a smartphone and a tablet, but the combination of the two created an entirely new experience,” said Jeong. “The larger screen completely changed things like watching movies, checking email and catching up on the news, to the point that I could no longer be satisfied with a smaller screen.”

Park also discussed the experience of using the Galaxy Fold, remarking that it is not only the presence of the big screen that makes the new device special, but the ways in which it has been optimized according to its shape and size.

“With the Galaxy Fold, it’s not just that the screen is bigger, but that the device has been optimized for two-handed use. One example is that the split keyboard feature allows the user to type comfortably when they are holding the wider device in two hands. What’s more, the camera button changes position fluidly when the phone is switched from portrait to landscape mode, and the home key can be aligned to either side of the screen so that the user doesn’t have to reposition their hand to reach it.”

With the Galaxy Fold’s official launch on September 6^th in Korea, users can now experience firsthand what makes the device such a game changer.

A Multitasking Machine

Unfolding the Galaxy Fold’s Infinity Flex Display opens up a world of possibility in terms of multitasking. This is possible thanks to innovations like App Continuity and Multi-Active Window, which make it easy for users to take full advantage of the Galaxy Fold’s versatility.

According to Park, Samsung had been prioritizing enabling users to launch and utilize up to three apps simultaneously since the earliest stages of the Galaxy Fold’s development. Multi-Active Window makes this possible, allowing users to take their multitasking, entertainment and content consumption to the next level.

When gaming, for example, Multi-Active Window enables users to launch an app like YouTube and simultaneously watch walkthrough videos of the game while they’re playing. It also makes balancing multiple tasks, including messaging friends, browsing the web and viewing multimedia, a breeze.

A Bold Vision

The Galaxy Fold is a bold device with a bold vision for the future of the smartphone. It’s a vision that’s built on hardware and apps that power richer content consumption, superior multitasking, and that opens the door for users to enjoy new mobile experiences.

To help carry out that vision, Samsung’s developers have been working closely with Google and other major partners to enrich the Galaxy Fold’s ecosystem with popular apps and services available today. And their efforts have paid off. The development team has optimized hundreds of the most frequently used apps for the Galaxy Fold – including popular apps like YouTube, Facebook and Microsoft Office.

Both Jeong and Park described Samsung’s partnership with Google as key to establishing a smooth and efficient app-optimization process for the Galaxy Fold. “We formed a collaborative taskforce with Google at the very beginning of the development process,” said Jeong, “and we’ve been building this foldable ecosystem together ever since.”

They pointed to the Galaxy Fold’s App Continuity feature as a notable example of this collaboration. Realizing this feature, which enables apps to seamlessly transition between the cover and main displays when users open and close the device, required Samsung’s developers to completely rethink conventional app operations. The challenge was the fact that the Galaxy Fold not only has two screens, but that the aspect ratios of the screens are so drastically different. What’s more, developers needed to create a seamless transition where the user opens their device, and the app they were using on the front screen transitions in its optimized form to the larger screen without stopping or restarting. Fortunately, the development team were up to the task.

Another challenge that the team faced stemmed from Android’s traditional method of managing multiple apps. As Park explained, “With ‘standard’ Android, once two apps are activated, one of them is inevitably stopped.” To solve this issue, Jeong said, the team collaborated with Google to build an all-new multi-window system that was optimized for the Galaxy Fold’s larger screen.

Assisting Developers

With each component of the Galaxy Fold’s foldable UI in place, Samsung and Google started developing the framework necessary for developers to test and optimize their apps for this new device.

Test labs were set up in Korea, the U.S. and China to offer Android developers a chance to familiarize themselves with the device’s foldable UI and update their apps. To open the door for more developers to innovate within this foldable ecosystem, Samsung released a number of easily accessible online resources, including a ‘remote test lab,’ which was supported by Google, and allows developers to test-run apps on their PC using a virtual Galaxy Fold device, and an emulator.

Together, these resources offer developers the tools they need to optimize their apps for the interface of the future. And according to Park, plenty of developers have already jumped on board.

“Our partners and developers have shown tremendous interest in developing apps for the new form factor,” said Park. “We plan to expand our test labs soon to create more opportunities for developers to enrich the Galaxy Fold’s ecosystem with dynamic apps.”

The Future for Foldable

Several of the innovations created during the development process, including App Continuity and Multi-Active Window, have not only made the Galaxy Fold’s user experience more seamless and intuitive; they’ve also set a standard for foldable phones to follow.

As a result of Samsung’s close collaboration with Google, beginning with Android’s newest version, Android 10, both of the aforementioned innovations will be included as standard features for foldable phones. “When Android 10 rolls out and becomes the new standard for Android devices,” Jeong explained, “it will lead more developers to keep foldable-phone users in mind when developing apps.”

Ongoing partnerships with Google and major app developers will help Samsung enrich the Galaxy Fold’s app ecosystem with even more dynamic services – services that will only get better with the latest 5G network.

“The combination of the Galaxy Fold’s large display and 5G’s rapid speeds will revolutionize how we utilize everyday apps and enjoy a wide range of content,” said Park. “That also includes services like 4K streaming, which means that, for instance, users will be able to comfortably view multiple video streams at the same time on their Galaxy Fold’s spacious display.”

Jeong notes that the development process to optimize apps is happening quickly. She remarks that this “rapid optimization” is accelerating the company’s ability to bring a well-rounded foldable experience to users.

If an app has not yet been optimized for the Galaxy Fold, she continued, the smartphone’s built-in app-optimizing technology will help ensure that content is displayed in a way that makes full use of the device’s large display and foldable form. “With a tap of a button, the device automatically converts the app’s size and ratio to fit the display, so users don’t experience any discomfort.”

As Park noted, through app optimization, extensive testing, and by the forging of exciting partnerships, Samsung is “laying the foundation for a seamless and diverse foldable ecosystem – with the Galaxy Fold leading the industry forward.”

“Our ultimate goal is to inspire users with a new and innovative mobile experience,” added Jeong. “Going forward, we will continue to support the development of apps that leverage the foldable UX in incredible ways, and power all-new experiences within this growing ecosystem.”

Samsung’s booth, Samsung Town, is comprised of a range of interactive exhibits for visitors to get a hands-on look at the company’s lifestyle and smart home appliances, mobile devices, network innovations, B2B solutions, TVs and more.

The BESPOKE Lifestyles zone features a dynamic rotating stage on which three separate scenarios have been set up to showcase the versatility of the BESPOKE refrigerator in different color variants for a trio of lifestyles; solo millennial, young couple and extended family.

A vibrant display introduces visitors to Samsung’s new range of premium cordless stick vacuum cleaners, POWERstick Jet. The POWERstick Jet lineup features up to 200W of industry-leading suction power, a long-lasting battery, an ergonomic design and a 5-layered HEPA filtration system.

The QLED Square features a dynamic Super Big TV wall, showcasing a fluid transformation between three QLED TV size options – 50, 75 and 98 inch – for those interested in high quality, immersive viewing experiences.

Samsung Town’s QLED 8K Square is showcasing Samsung’s full lineup of industry-leading QLED 8K TVs. Thanks to Samsung’s proprietary Quantum Processor 8K and QLED Panel, each of the six models – 65, 75, 82, 85 and 98-inch, and the new 55-inch model – are able to provide an astounding level of immersion and reality to the viewing experience.

A visitor takes in all 146 inches of the next-generation visual experience that is The Wall in 4K. A visitor experiences the seamless connectivity of the Galaxy ecosystem with Samsung partner Technogym’s innovative gym equipment in the Health Geek Zone. Users can keep track of their workout progress and then organize complementary diet plans using the seamless connectivity of Samsung Health across their mobile devices.

Understanding that increasingly, working lifestyles mean working from home and whilst on the go, Samsung’s Connected Home zone includes a Freelancer exhibit showcasing how, with a Samsung mobile phone, laptop and tablet, you can access your work environment anytime, anywhere. Above, a visitor experiences the seamless connectivity across the Freelancer zone.

The latest addition to Samsung’s flagship note series, the Galaxy Note10, comes equipped with an S Pen that can do more than ever before. Visitors to the Galaxy Note10 zone are getting hands-on with a Galaxy Note10+ and enjoying the reflective ceiling of the exhibit while remotely taking a selfie with the S Pen’s new Air actions function.

In the Galaxy Square section of Samsung Town, visitors are able to get up close and personal with Samsung’s latest flagship model – the Galaxy Fold. Developed with a brand new flexible form factor and bespoke features such as App Continuity for ease of use when switching modes, the Galaxy Fold is Samsung’s most innovative smartphone yet, built for a new era of Galaxy.

A lucky young visitor takes part in the Galaxy Tab S6 Drawing Event, which sees model and artist Kicki Yang Zhang harnessing the improved sketching capabilities of the Tab S6’s evolved S Pen to create lifelike caricatures of IFA Samsung Town attendees.

In the Lifestyle zone, visitors are taking in The Serif, a TV that goes beyond being just a simple household appliance and accentuates a room’s interior décor. Visitors are being invited to check out each of the six color options available for The Serif, and share a snap of their favorite on social media with the hashtags #ColorYouLove, #TheSerif and #TheFrame.

“Ick bin ein Bärliner!”: A special display in the Lifestyle Zone marries the chameleon-like abilities of The Serif’s display with the Berlin bear, the symbol of the city of Berlin. Visitors do their best impression of the local icon while learning more about Samsung’s diverse display offering.

To help visitors get a sense of the key themes, experiences and innovations to look out for in Samsung’s showcase, we spoke to some of the individuals who helped put the booth together.

Connected Home Zone

Q: What would you like visitors to take away from the Connected Home Zone?

We hope that, by encouraging them to experience how seamlessly Samsung’s home innovations connect in ways that simplify users’ lives, visitors will walk away with a deep understanding of the true value of connected living.

We designed this zone to illustrate how Samsung’s IoT solutions cater to consumers of various interests and lifestyles. For example, the Health Geek section showcases ways that Samsung devices can help users reach their fitness goals.

One of the most dynamic examples of this involves the Galaxy Watch Active2 and a Technogym exercise bike. The bike is outfitted with NFC technology, and when users tap it with their watch, they’re able to easily sync their watch with their bike, and log their workout data in Samsung Health as soon as they finish exercising.

Q: Are there any other exhibits in the zone that visitors should be sure to check out?

Don’t forget to test drive Samsung’s Digital Cockpit. It not only offers simple controls for managing connected devices in your home from your car, but it also lets you easily manage key car functions from the comfort of your home.

Let me give you an example. After launching the SmartThings app on the Digital Cockpit’s dashboard, if you select “Coming home,” the system will automatically activate the connected devices you’ll need when you arrive – like the lights and air conditioner – so your house will be ready for your return.

Visual Display Zone

Q: Which section of the Visual Display Zone would you recommend the most to visitors?

There’s a wide range of exciting displays on exhibit in the Visual Display Zone, but I’d especially recommend that visitors check out the QLED 8K Highlight Zone to take a look at our full lineup of QLED 8K TVs. It’s the widest 8K TV range in the industry, and our exhibits do an excellent job of showcasing the TVs’ breathtaking visuals.

Because QLED 8K TVs feature a resolution that’s four times greater than 4K UHD TVs, they add a sense of depth to content that makes it feel more immersive. We also offer a wide range of size options, designed to suit any home. These include the newly announced 55-inch model, as well as 65-, 75-, 82-, 85- and 98-inch versions. I’d also recommend that you see how the 98-inch model, and its 5,000-nit peak luminance, make HDR video content really pop.

Visitors should also be sure to check out the 146- and 219-inch versions of The Wall, our immersive, modular Micro LED display. It can be custom-tailored to any size, and it’s a fantastic solution for businesses, as well as those looking for the ultimate TV upgrade. You can see both models on display in all their glory on the right side of the zone. Trust me, you won’t want to miss that.

Q: Could you tell us more about the technology that allows QLED 8K TVs to produce such an immersive picture?

The Quantum Processor 8K is the key here. It’s based on our proprietary semiconductor technology, and it’s what makes QLED 8K possible, along with the TVs’ innovative QLED panels. The Quantum Processor 8K intelligently analyzes more than ten million images, and uses this data to automatically upscales standard definition, HD, FHD and UHD content.

The Quantum Processor 8K makes it possible for users to enjoy their favorite TV shows and OTT (Over The Top) streaming content in crisp 8K quality. When you see the before and after images with your own eyes here in the zone, you’ll realize just how powerful this technology really is.

Digital Appliance Zone

Q: What should visitors check out first in the Digital Appliance Zone?

I’d recommend that they check out our new BESPOKE refrigerator line. When we created the Digital Appliance Zone, we wanted to show people how Samsung’s home appliances tailor to a variety of lifestyles. BESPOKE is a perfect example of this lifestyle-centric approach to innovation.

BESPOKE’s launch has effectively brought about a new era of customized home appliances. Each BESPOKE refrigerator is completely customizable, which means that users can personalize their fridge’s color, materials and configuration to suit their lifestyle and design needs. With a modular design and up to eight different configurations – from single-door to four-door units – BESPOKE refrigerators seamlessly fit into most contemporary kitchens. Their versatility is on display in a total of seven lifestyle-tailored exhibits across the Digital Appliance Zone, including the circular structure at the center, which we like to call the Circle of Life.

Going forward, in addition to showcasing customizable appliances like BESPOKE at this year’s IFA, we’ll continue to develop convenient, customizable devices that tailor to the lifestyles of a wide range of consumers – including Millennials and those living in single-person households.

Q: What else would you recommend that visitors check out in the zone?

After checking out BESPOKE, I’d recommend that they take a look at our new range of premium cordless stick vacuum cleaners, POWERstick Jet. Our POWERstick Jet lineup offers industry-leading suction power, up to 200 watts,¹ feature a long-lasting battery and an ergonomic design, and even include a 5-layer HEPA filtration system that captures up to 99.999 percent² of allergens and dust particles.

Semiconductor Zone

Q: What should visitors check out first in the Semiconductor Zone?

I’d have to say Samsung’s SSD T5. It’s the latest addition to a long line of portable solid-state drives that offer fast transfers and reliable performance. Our exhibit offers visitors a chance to take a closer look at the SSD’s impressive specs – including 500GB and 1TB capacities, and transfer speeds of up to 540 MB/s – as well as its new Rose Gold and Metallic Red finishes.

I’d also recommend that they check out one of our Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) SSD portfolio, the 970 EVO Plus. Operating on the PCIe interface, this NVMe SSD delivers sequential read speeds of up to 3,500 megabytes per second. When playing 4K games, users experience fast load speeds, and no lag. It’s available with up to 2TB of storage, and it comes in a compact M.2 form factor.

Q: Will visitors be able to take a closer look at some of the Samsung semiconductor technologies that have been receiving considerable attention lately?

Absolutely. The zone also offers a glimpse at our latest semiconductor system solutions, including our new Dynamic Vision Sensor. It’s a technology that can be utilized in a variety of fields, especially home surveillance. It’s capable of distinguishing between humans and objects, and it recognizes movement by registering changes in light. Because its output is dot-based, and it’s designed to only recognize people’s movements and not their faces, the Dynamic Vision Sensor ensures that users’ privacy is preserved.

Before you leave, be sure to check out Samsung’s first 5G-integrated mobile processor, the Exynos 980. This innovative technology opens the door for consumers to enjoy more sophisticated AI experiences, and it will eventually enable us to add 5G connectivity to more devices.

Mobile Zone

Q: What is the key theme of the Mobile Zone, and why was it chosen?

The innovations featured in the Mobile Zone demonstrate how Samsung Electronics is leading the charge when it comes to 5G. Samsung was the first in the market to introduce a commercially available 5G device, the Galaxy S10 5G, and here at IFA, we’re taking the next step in leading 5G’s democratization by expanding our 5G smartphone lineup to include a wider range of mobile devices.

The 5G smartphones showcased here, including the Galaxy Note10 5G, the Note10+ 5G, the Galaxy Fold 5G and the Galaxy A90 5G, will open the door for more people to experience 5G’s always-on connectivity and the incredible possibilities that come with it. And we believe that, going forward, this 5G ecosystem will only grow faster and stronger.

Q: What are some key features that visitors should focus on when testing out Samsung’s new smartphones?

This is the first time that we’ve offered the opportunity to get hands-on with the Galaxy Fold, so I’d definitely recommend that visitors take this chance to get an up-close look at the device’s new form factor. Experience just how easy it is to transition apps from the 4.6-inch cover display to the 7.3-inch main screen – and vice versa – and be sure to test out the smartphone’s six-camera setup.

The Galaxy A90 5G is another standout smartphone whose premium specs are sure to catch visitors’ eyes. These include the device’s 48MP high-resolution camera; a powerful processor, which supports faster downloads and smoother streaming; and a high-capacity 4,500mAh battery, just to name a few.

Q: Are there any other activities you’d recommend to those visiting the Mobile Zone?

Each 5G device in the Mobile Zone is equipped with an app that illustrates the level of power and connectivity that 5G networks make possible. The app was created based on an actual 5G demo conducted in Korea earlier this year using Samsung’s first 5G smartphone, the Galaxy S10 5G.

The demo is designed to showcase how 5G supports a completely new viewing experience – one that’s richer and more personalized. When viewing content with 5G, you can choose specific viewing angles, replay specific moments, and even catch details that you may have missed.

With this demo, we’re showing people that 5G is no longer a technology of the future; it’s here today. So don’t forget to stop by the booth to experience its power for yourself.

Samsung Electronics has announced the launch of its category-defining new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Fold, set for release in Korea on September 6 and in select countries shortly after. At IFA 2019, which opens its doors on September 6, visitors will be able to have the unique opportunity to experience the Galaxy Fold for the very first time.

For those not able to stop by the Messe Berlin Exhibition Grounds this year, the video above provides a look at what a hands-on experience of the Galaxy Fold looks like for users.

The Galaxy Fold’s unique design and foldable form factor, providing you with two options for screen size in one device, provides a brand-new user experience. When closed, you can comfortably access all your essential apps with just one hand. But when opened, the 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Display offers a truly immersive viewing experience, allowing you to get lost in videos on a screen that’s so big, you won’t believe you can fit it in a pocket. From the camera to the gallery to the latest gaming apps, users can enjoy next-level experiences with their favorite content on the spacious screen of the main display just by opening up the device.

In order to facilitate maximum productivity and ease of use when switching between the Galaxy Fold’s two displays, Samsung developed two features especially: App Continuity and Multi-Active Window. With App Continuity, you can switch between using an app on the cover display and using it on the main display seamlessly. For example, you can check an email when the device is folded, and then, when you open the device to reply, a version of the email app that is optimized for the expansive screen will open, allowing you to comfortably view the full contents of the email. Following the uninterrupted screen transition, you can then reply to the email using keyboard, which is optimized for placement near each of your hands.

Multi-Active Window allows you to take advantage of the increased screen real state of the main display, as you can open multiple apps simultaneously and easily use them at the same time thanks to an optimized UX for next-level multitasking. Whilst reading an email, you can easily drag and drop your Calendar as well as Google Maps from the device’s side panel into the Multi-active Window to work in three windows simultaneously and coordinate a meeting quickly and efficiently. You can also easily adjust the dimensions of each app window so as to see more, or less, as you require.

Recently, a select group of Galaxy fans from around the world received a very special delivery from Samsung Electronics. Each had been invited to take part in the company’s exclusive The First Fold event, which offered the opportunity to be one of the first individuals to get hands-on with the Galaxy Fold.

Camera crews captured the moments that selected guests including German footballer and World Cup winner Mario Götze, Grammy-nominated DJ and producer Steve Aoki, actress and model Millie Bobby Brown, professional gamer Ninja and Parisian designer/blogger Jeanne Damas received their Galaxy Fold, and recorded them as they eagerly began the smartphone’s first unboxings.

The launch of the Galaxy Fold will herald the arrival of a whole new category of smartphones, introducing one of the most meaningful innovations in smartphone technology in the past decade. Samsung released a new video on April 15, ahead of the commercial launch of the device.

This video dramatizes the device’s unique trait, the foldable screen, through a powerfully crafted dance performance, created by world-renowned choreographer Amy Gardner.

The film follows a dancer as she breaks free from rigidity and physical constraints. She moves through a period of self-exploration and into a state of self-realization that manifests in a powerful dance sequence. The film then resolves with the reveal of the Galaxy Fold, clasped in the dancer’s hand. The music is a modern reinterpretation of ‘Tom’s Diner’ from the critically acclaimed artist Santigold.

Pio Schunker of Samsung’s global marketing team said, “As much as the Fold is a brand-new category-changing device, we challenged ourselves to create a marketing campaign that was on-par with this product. Therefore, we did not rely on ‘traditional’ launch ideas where it was focused mostly on communicating product features – but rather on how we could communicate effectively with our target audience emotionally. As you can see from our initial teaser using the bold Korean type on a global scale, we continued to do our best to deliver the product story in unique and new ways with the Galaxy Fold.”

The video offers viewers a tantalizing new perspective on Samsung’s most advanced and innovative device to date. Further Galaxy Fold videos, embracing a range of imaginative concepts, will be released on Samsung’s social media in the run up to the device’s global launch.

Samsung subjected the device to several rounds of extensive tests in its state-of-the-art reliability labs to make sure that the Galaxy Fold is ready to come to market.

Naturally, given the smartphone’s design, a Folding Test was a pivotal part of the Galaxy Fold’s durability assessment. This test, which examines whether the Galaxy Fold can outlast 200,000 folds and unfolds (or around five years of use, if used 100 times a day), takes a full week to complete. While the extent of the test may seem like overkill to some, Samsung viewed it as vital to ensuring the durability of device’s hinged design and Infinity Flex Display.

MWC19 is officially underway and attendees have been flocking to see the very latest offerings Samsung Electronics has on show. This year’s iteration of the world’s largest mobile industry exhibition is themed ‘Intelligent Connectivity’, and in the exhibition’s 4-day span, over 100,000 visitors are expected to attend.

Right at the center of Barcelona’s cutting-edge Fira Gran Via exhibition center, Samsung has installed two dynamic booths showcasing the company’s latest innovations in mobile technology. This year, visitors have been amazed not only by the chance to get a first, hands-on look at the newest mobile devices such as Galaxy S10 5G and Galaxy Fold, but also by Samsung’s groundbreaking advancements in 5G connectivity, which the company has been working on bringing to life over the past decade.

If you’re not able to stop by the Fira Gran Via to learn more about ‘Everything 5G’ this year, here is a rundown of the five biggest topics underlying Samsung’s presence at MWC this year.

#1 Introducing Samsung’s First 5G Smartphone, Galaxy S10 5G

At Samsung’s MWC Mobile booth, visitors have been able to get up close and experience the full range of Samsung’s latest mobile innovations. The company’s interactive Mobile booth features the latest additions to flagship range, the Galaxy S10 series, with its latest innovations in display, camera and performance. At the center of Samsung’s MWC Mobile Booth is the Galaxy S10 5G, the company’s first 5G smartphone.

The booth showcased Samsung’s latest mobile offerings – the release of which marks a decade of Galaxy innovation – as well as network solutions that draw from the company’s decades-long expertise in this area.

The Galaxy S10 5G delivers the power of 5G straight to consumers, providing increased network speeds around 20 times faster than 4G and super-low 1ms latency. Users can, with the Galaxy S10 5G, harness the power of 5G to download their favorite HD TV shows and load apps in the blink of an eye, stream their favorite content interruption-free, and break through high-traffic networks at crowded events thanks to its bandwidth capabilities. Visitors to the Samsung booth are also learning how the Galaxy S10 5G allows high-quality, real-time video calling, dynamic maps and AR experiences.

Other devices on display for attendees include the Galaxy Fold, Samsung’s first foldable smartphone, Galaxy A30 and Galaxy A50, the upgraded Galaxy A Series starting from the mid-tier portfolio, the new Galaxy Tab S5e, the first tablet to feature Bixby 2.0, the latest additions to Samsung’s wearable mobile ecosystem, the Galaxy Watch Active and Galaxy Buds.

#2 The 5G Era Is Here – And With It Are Brand-New, Super-Fast Experiences

At MWC 2019, Samsung is not only continuing to establish its leadership in 5G connectivity, but also showcasing real-world usage experiences through innovative live demonstrations. Along with providing visitors with a hands-on experience with the Galaxy S10 5G at its MWC Mobile Booth, Samsung has a dedicated Network booth at which visitors are learning about the breadth of the company’s 5G developments firsthand.

Samsung showcased a variety of real-world 5G usage experiences at the event. Here we see side-by-side comparisons – spanning various sectors – of 8K video streaming on 5G and 4G networks.

Global development of 5G networks has seen countries develop 5G solution for frequency spectrums both below 6GHz or above 6GHz, and at the Networks booth, visitors are witnessing how Samsung is paving the way as one of few companies to have commercialized network solutions suitable for both these spectrums including 3.5GHz and 28GHz. Attendees have also been stopping by to see Samsung demonstrate live data communications between its 5G smartphones and 5G radio base stations, with interoperability demonstrations showcasing super-fast speeds of over 1 Gbps.

Furthermore, to the booth are also learning more about Samsung’s pioneering developments in the field of connected products, 5G Vertical – from public safety and Vehicles-to-Everything (V2X) to Smart Factories.

Situated around the Fira Gran Via venue as well as throughout select hotels around Barcelona, Samsung is demonstrating its 5G network solutions by live broadcasting the official media channel of MWC19, ‘Mobile World Live TV’.

#3 Industry Transformation: Blending AI and 5G

At this year’s event, Samsung is demonstrating not only the latest in connected living with its 5G solutions, but also in intelligent lifestyle. At the Samsung Mobile booth, a dedicated exhibit is showcasing the latest in the Galaxy Smart Home ecosystem featuring Bixby – connectivity powered by intelligence.

Nearby the Fira Gran Via, Samsung is hosting a Bixby Experience Studio until March 3, where visitors are being provided with an experiential look at Samsung’s seamlessly connected home ecosystem powered by the intelligent Bixby feature inside an interactive smart home environment.

Following a full acquisition of Zhilabs in October 2018, Samsung has been developing its artificial intelligence (AI)-based 5G network management solutions; attendees are seeing how, through AI-based deep learning, this system helps to intuitively monitor and analyze 5G network performance.

The adoption of 5G is set to usher in the next wave of technological innovation by accelerating new breakthroughs. MWC attendees can see for themselves brand new use cases of this at partner exhibitor Orange’s booth, which features drones and industrial robot powered by Samsung’s 5G solutions.

#4 5G Industry Leadership

Samsung’s end-to-end 5G solutions have taken center stage at this year’s MWC.

Also the attendees are learning about how Samsung’s 5G R&D breakthroughs have been driving wider 5G commercial services around the world. This 5G network leadership has been the key driving forces behind early 5G commercial services in the U.S and Korea since 2018.

Samsung’s latest end-to-end 5G network solutions were on full display at MWC19.

On February 25, the U.S. partner Sprint announced that the company is using Samsung’s 5G New Radio (NR) solutions to prepare the launch of its 5G services, saying in a statement that they were looking forward to giving Sprint customers even greater experiences with 5G. Samsung’s 5G NR solution will be in the commercial network for one of Sprint’s first 5G cities, Chicago, IL.

In addition, Samsung showcased its new next generation 5G Radio Frequency (RF) chipsets, supporting 28GHz and 39GHz. With new RF chipsets, Samsung 5G base stations will be approximately 25 percent smaller, lighter and less power consuming compared to previous iterations. Furthermore, as of February 2019, Samsung has shipped over 36,000 base stations to mobile carriers worldwide.

#5 5G Partnership, on a Global Scale

Taking center stage not only at Samsung’s own Mobile booth, the Galaxy S10 5G is also a feature of various leading partner booths. Visitors to the booths of Vodafone, Orange, Telefonica, Deutsche Telekom and KT among others are able to experience the future of mobile content streaming, gaming and video calling on the brand-new Galaxy S10 5G.

The Galaxy S10 5G is also being showcased at American partner Qualcomm’s booth. On February 25, the Qualcomm 5G Press Conference saw Samsung Electronics Senior Vice President June Hee Lee present Samsung’s future 5G mission and the importance of a connected global ecosystem of partnerships with those who share the 5G vision.

The Galaxy S10 5G was also showcased at Qualcomm’s MWC19 booth.

On day two of MWC, at the GTI Summit 2019, DJ Koh, President and CEO of IT & Mobile Communications Division, announced Samsung’s 5G strategy in the Chinese market in collaboration with China Mobile, which looks to bring the 5G era to China by launching field trials with the Galaxy S10 5G with an end to providing full commercial 5G availability.

Samsung has also unveiled several exciting new carrier partnerships. Having begun early February and running for a five-month period, Samsung and Fastweb announced that they are conducting Italy’s first 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) trial on a commercial spectrum in Milan. This month also saw Telefonica Deutschland and Samsung conclude a successful fixed wireless access pilot with 5G in Hamburg, Germany. Both are a testament to Samsung’s dedication to collaborating with partners who share the Samsung vision of technology that puts people first.

To learn more about how the Galaxy Fold came to be and the powerful effect it is set to have on consumers’ lives, Samsung Newsroom sat down with Eui-Suk Chung, Executive Vice President and Head of Software and Artificial Intelligence at Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business during the MWC19 in Barcelona.

Q. The potential Galaxy Fold has for the way we use our smartphones is immense. What motivated such a development?

“Our understanding of consumer needs – in particular, demand for a larger device screen that is comfortable to hold – led us to create this revolutionary device. Samsung had already pioneered category-defining innovation with the Galaxy Note series, the ‘phablet’ hybrid, but we had noticed that a demand for even larger screens to keep up with content consumption has still not wavered. We debuted the prototypes of a flexible display technology in 2011, but it took another eight years to develop the technology to deliver this product in a truly meaningful way for users as a direct response to the way people are currently using their phones.”

Q. Which is?

“In brief, all the time and for all things. With the Galaxy Fold, we are bringing greater device mobility, an expanded screen and a versatile camera into one device that can slip into your pocket. Galaxy Fold is for those who want it all on a bigger screen, but without the bulk – a ‘phone plus more’.”

Q. So what can users expect from the Galaxy Fold?  

“Galaxy Fold provides a completely new way for consumers to use a smartphone and get the best out of both of the worlds it draws upon, smartphone and tablet. It is a compact device that unfolds to reveal Samsung’s largest-ever mobile display, optimized for the Android ecosystem and applications on it.

The Galaxy Fold’s software was designed to provide streamlined usage for various scenarios. When the user folds it, they can take a quick look at smartphone notifications and other essentials. Then, when it is unfolded, the user can use the larger immersive display for higher quality viewing on the apps they require and in-depth multitasking.”

Q. Can you expand on the Galaxy Fold’s multitasking capabilities?

“With the Galaxy Fold’s Multi-Active Window, the multitasking possibilities are virtually endless. For example, a user can open up to three apps simultaneously on the main display to surf, text, share and watch without missing a beat. We developed this main display to allow multitasking with three apps because users can already use two at once, if they wish, on existing smartphones. The Galaxy Fold provides the best possible experience of three apps at once, all in a very comfortable way.

The Fold also makes app usability even easier – the app in use on the cover display with automatically transfer back to the main display when the device is opened, and then transition seamlessly back to the cover display when closed. Users will find that the experience of shifting from the cover to the main display and vice versa is, thanks to the inward fold, as satisfying, as natural and as easy as reading a book.”

Q. Do all apps support App Continuity and Multi-Active Window?

“The Galaxy Fold features UX functionality unlike other devices thanks to the partnerships we have with Google and app developers in the Android developer community. We worked very closely with Google on developing app-compatible software to the end of creating not just a Samsung proprietary solution, but general Android solutions.

We continue to work with the Android developer community to ensure apps are optimized for the Galaxy Fold and that user experience only continues to improve. Support for App Continuity and Multi-Active Window will vary based on the application and the developer’s adherence with Google policies and guidelines.

As more apps are developed to be compatible with foldable-specific features, Samsung will continue to provide the best possible experience for apps not yet optimized for a foldable device thanks to the Galaxy Fold’s app compatibility software.”

Q. What has this collaborative development process been like?

“We wanted to ensure that users’ favorite apps and services were optimized for the Galaxy Fold’s unique UX. Working closely with our partners, we set up a test lab so that we could directly engage and work with top companies to bring the best services to our foldable smartphone. In particular, Samsung and Google have a rich history of close collaboration, and our work together on this foldable device is another example of that.”

Q. Finally, could you elaborate more on the experience of developing a foldable mobile device?

“The making of a foldable smartphone was a large undertaking – from creating materials and methods to overcoming mechanical challenges. From the start, we were focused on achieving the best user experience. All the new elements we had to create – hardware, software, app compatibility – are all layers that have come together to form a device with optimum usability at its core.

We also broke barriers to create the Galaxy Fold. It features a UX functionality unlike other devices made possible by our app developer and Google partnerships.

We are proud to have introduced Samsung’s first-ever foldable smartphone, and we are excited about what’s next – from ‘foldable’ to ‘roll-able’ and even to ‘stretch-able’. New device designs that can be folded in multiple ways are no longer beyond the realm of possibility and Samsung is ready to usher in these options and create meaningful experiences for consumers that help them do more of what they love.”

Demonstrating Real-World 5G Scenarios Unlocked by Samsung Commercial Solutions          

Leveraging its commercially-proven 5G leadership, Samsung will present multiple live demonstrations to show real-world 5G experiences:

• 5G NR live demonstration with Samsung network and smartphone using 3.5GHz and 28GHz bands: A mobile edge cloud game on the company’s first 5G smartphone will be demonstrated live, by being connected to Samsung’s live 5G network solutions. In addition, 5G Multi-user MIMO will be demonstrated.

• First live 5G broadcast at MWC19: The first live broadcasting of GSMA ‘Mobile World Live TV’ using Samsung’s 5G network solutions at Broadcast Village, Gran Via. It will broadcast live throughout the venue and to 280 hotels in Barcelona during the show.

• Live demonstration of 5G-powered technology for the industry: Samsung, Cisco and Orange Spain will demonstrate diverse 5G-powered use cases to show how low latency and high speed of 5G technology can be applied for the industry at Orange booth (Hall3 3K10).

• Samsung & Zhilabs’ automated 5G network solutions: Samsung will demonstrate live AI-based 5G network management solutions with Zhilabs, acquired by Samsung through acquisition in October 2018. It helps operators to optimize 5G network performance automatically.

Next Generation 5G Chipsets

In addition, Samsung will show its new next generation 5G Radio Frequency (RF) chipsets, supporting 28GHz and 39GHz. Using these new RF chipsets, Samsung 5G base stations will be approximately 25 percent smaller, lighter and less power consuming compared to previous iterations.

5G base stations use almost one thousand antennas and several radio frequency integrated circuits (RFIC) to utilize mmWave spectrum. With this next-generation chipset, Samsung helps improve network equipment performance through decreased noise levels, and improvement in the linearity characteristics of the RF power amplifier.

Samsung’s portfolio of chips includes the Exynos Modem 5100, fully compliant with the 3GPP 5G NR standard to support new spectrums including below and above 6GHz for faster data speeds up to 6Gbps.Their innovative capabilities and the technological innovations are fully demonstrated through the range of 5G products.

To gain first-hand experience and to see live demonstrations of Samsung’s end-to-end 5G solutions, attendees can visit the official Samsung booth located in Hall 3 and the Samsung network booth in Hall 2 Stand 2M20 (invitational-only).

Held at San Francisco’s Bill Graham Civic Auditorium on February 20, Galaxy Unpacked 2019 saw the company unveil a total of five new flagship phones: the highly anticipated Galaxy Fold, which features a game-changing foldable form and Samsung’s largest-ever mobile display, as well as four Galaxy S10 models that allow users to choose the phone that’s best for them.

But that’s not all. The company also announced exciting partnerships that will enable Galaxy S10 users to capture and share moments in dynamic new ways, and revealed three new wearables – the Galaxy Buds, Galaxy Watch Active and Galaxy Fit – that will change how users enjoy their favorite music and keep track of their fitness.

Samsung Electronics America’s Senior Vice President of Product Marketing, Justin Denison, kicks off the event by introducing the world to the Galaxy Fold – a device that marks the beginning of a whole new mobile category. Summing up the Galaxy Fold as phone “unlike any you’ve ever seen,” Denison demonstrates how the device’s breakthrough design, seamless portability, and intuitive user experience will change everything from multitasking to mobile entertainment, to snapping selfies.

DJ Koh introduces the Galaxy S10 as a new line of premium devices, which includes the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+.

Samsung Electronics America’s Director of Product Marketing, Suzanne de Silva, discusses the ins and outs of the Galaxy S10’s Infinity-O Display. With the world’s first Dynamic AMOLED display and support for HDR10+, she explains, the Galaxy S10 offers “a truly next-generation, cinematic experience.” She also describes how the display’s first-of-its-kind Ultrasonic Fingerprint Scanner provides vault-like security to keep your device safe.

De Silva explains how the Galaxy S10’s triple rear camera system, which includes an all-new, 123-degree Ultra Wide lens, offers users “a pro-grade camera for every situation.”

After de Silva announces a partnership with Adobe to design a version of (video editing software) Premiere Rush specifically for Galaxy devices, Brazilian YouTube stars Leon Martins and Nilce Moretto demonstrate how the Galaxy S10’s camera and Adobe Premiere Rush CC for Samsung allow users to create incredible content on the go.

De Silva welcomes the Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri (center right), to the stage to discuss how the Galaxy S10 makes sharing photos faster, easier, and better than ever. He reveals that the Galaxy S10 includes a new Instagram Mode built into its camera that allows you to take a photo or video and immediately upload it to your Instagram feed. He also sums up the Galaxy S10 as “the best way to express yourself on Instagram,” and to demonstrate just how easy it is to use, he snaps and posts a quick selfie with his friend, DJ Koh (center left).

“From expansive storage to advanced speeds, the (Galaxy) S10 is like having a super computer in your pocket,” says Drew Blackard, Samsung Electronics America’s Senior Director of Product Marketing. As he explains, the Galaxy S10+ is available with up to 12GB of RAM and a terabyte of base storage, and the Galaxy S10’s new processor enables 29 percent faster CPU speeds and 37 percent faster GPU speeds. He also announces that the Galaxy S10 models will be the first mobile devices optimized to work seamlessly with Unity’s new, gaming engine-enhancing Adaptive Performance feature. The combination of premium performance specs and Adaptive Performance support will enable the Galaxy S10 to power next-level gaming experiences.

Blackard offers the crowd an up-close look at the Galaxy S10 line’s specs, and reveals that the smartphones will be available on March 8, and will also feature new, eco-friendly packaging.

Elina Vives, Samsung Electronics America’s Senior Director of Marketing, introduces Samsung’s new, cord-free Galaxy Buds. Featuring built-in Bixby support, easy controls, clear and smart sound, and a comfortable and compact form factor, the Galaxy Buds are an everyday, in-ear lifestyle companion. They’re designed to keep up with you all day – offering up to six hours of music and up to five hours of calls – and feature a compact case that delivers 1.7 hours of use after a quick 15-minute charge.

Vives explains how the new Galaxy Watch Active and Galaxy Fit combine exercise-tracking functions with innovations that can help users keep track of their overall wellness. These include heart rate monitors that check for irregular heartbeats, and continuous stress tracking – “to keep you calm when life gets overwhelming.”

Blackard returns to the stage to reveal the final member of the Galaxy S10 family: the Galaxy S10 5G. The first Galaxy phone to be compatible with 5G networks, the Galaxy S10 5G places the power of ultra-high speeds directly into users’ hands. It also features a powerful new 3D Depth Camera, as well as the largest screen and most powerful battery ever included in a Galaxy S device.

After discussing Samsung technologies that have helped accelerate the development of 5G commercial networks over the last ten years, DJ Koh hands the stage over to Hans Vestberg, CEO of Verizon, who reveals that his company will be the first carrier to launch the Galaxy S10 5G.
