We act on three packaging design principles – reduce, replace, and recycle; these principles have guided the eco-conscious changes to packaging for the Galaxy S series. From the quantity of packaging to the materials used, Samsung has worked to streamline product packaging and implement more sustainable processes.¹

From Galaxy S7 To Galaxy S21: Our Journey to More Eco-Conscious Packaging

Since the release of the Galaxy S7 in 2016, Samsung has developed more eco-conscious packaging with each generation of the Galaxy S series. Throughout this journey, we had worked diligently to remove elements that could stand in the way of people easily recycling their product packaging after purchase.

Only 4 percent of the total weight of the Galaxy S21’s packaging is made up of plastic,² with the volume of the waste generated per packaging unit being reduced by 49 percent when compared to the packaging of the Galaxy S7.* Similarly, the Galaxy S21 packaging contains only 58 percent of the paper used in that of the Galaxy S7, helping save some 44,802 trees a year.³ As a result of these continued sustainability efforts, we decreased the amount of carbon generated during the development of the Galaxy S21 series’ packaging by 50 percent compared to that of the Galaxy S7.⁴

Following extensive research into eco-conscious materials, the Galaxy S8’s packaging saw several evolutions compared to the previous Galaxy S series. We removed the magnet from inside the packaging along with the plastic in-box case for earphones, and the accessory tray – traditionally comprised of plastic – was made with paper-based material.

For the release of the Galaxy S9, we made an extra push towards reducing plastic waste. Samsung changed the device tray material from plastic to a pulp-mold material, integrating upcycled materials into our process.

For the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S20, Samsung expanded eco-conscious changes to packaging. We replaced plastic with paper to tie together accessories, the package structure was simplified, and all the packaging trays for in-box accessories were integrated into one pulp-mold tray to cut down on unnecessary materials. Furthermore, the protective film was removed from accessories such as the charger plug and the USB connector, and the coating for all accessories was changed from a glossy finish to a more eco-conscious matte finish that hides fingerprints and is harder to scratch.

The packaging for our latest flagship device, the Galaxy S21 series, is the most eco-conscious product packaging within the Galaxy S series. Every box for the device is made with corrugated cardboard, instead of rigid paper, to improve recyclability. Accessories such as the charger plug and in-box earphones were removed to further minimize the amount of packaging and promote reuse and recycling habits among Galaxy users.

Promoting Resource Efficiency Into the Future

Despite emerging challenges around the availability of sustainable materials and productivity of global supply chains as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Samsung still has a responsibility to help combat climate change and protect the environment in everything we do.

At the end of 2020, we achieved our goal of using 100 percent recycled or sustainably-sourced paper packaging⁵ and now require paper suppliers to submit certifications and conform to international standards, such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. We recognize that our journey to shifting to a fully circular economy is not over.

Samsung continues to search for new and innovative eco-conscious materials for our product packaging, to discover new ways to minimize materials used and to optimize our product development processes. In advance of future product releases, Samsung will continue to make changes that provide people with more eco-conscious product and packaging experiences as we work together with our supply chain and our customers to create a more sustainable world.

Harnessing the Galaxy S10 to Get to Safety

In June of this year, Australian couple Jessica and Lindsay were enjoying a trip out on their family boat 38km off the coast of Cairns, Queensland, an area most famous for its iconic Great Barrier Reef, when their boat’s motor became entangled with the anchor rope and led to them getting swept up by the waves. With the boat then overturning, the stranded couple were tipped into the water with no time to retrieve their lifejackets or their Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB), a device used to alert rescue services in emergencies.

The couple managed to remain afloat by grabbing hold of the anchor float after the boat overturned – but their ordeal was far from over as they had concerns about what marine wildlife might be nearby given that they had caught a six-foot shark right before capsizing. While floating overturned and in the water, the stern (rear) of the boat was weighed down as the anchor line was wrapped around the motor while it faced the sea swell.

However, Jessica was able to use her Galaxy S10 to contact the emergency services via phone and text after capsizing.

After having spoken with the local Chief of Police, she shared screenshots of their location with the rescue team using the Galaxy S10’s GPS and Google Maps functions. This information then helped guide the helicopter and boat emergency teams dispatched to find them.

Able to maintain contact with the authorities as they patrolled the ocean to find them, Jessica was also able to draw the attention of the rescue boat upon its arrival thanks to her Galaxy S10’s flashlight – the couple had spent several hours in the water and night had since fallen.

Jessica and Lindsay’s experience is a sobering reminder about the importance of water safety and conduct, and furthermore, it is also a unique example of the power and endurance of Galaxy smartphones, even in unusual or difficult situations; Jessica’s Galaxy S10 is still functioning as normal.^*

This software update brings select Galaxy S20 photo and video experiences to the Galaxy S10 and Note10 series. With Single Take, stay in the moment while you capture the moment using integrated AI technology. Single Take uses the camera system and AI to capture a number of photos and videos at once and recommends the best shot for you².

With an improved Night Mode on the Galaxy S10 series, and the addition of Night Hyperlapse on both Galaxy S10 and Note10 series³, you’ll be able to capture even more amazing photos and videos even in low light.

When you’ve captured that perfect image, Custom Filter lets you create your own filter with colors and styles you like from a favorite photo serving as inspiration. This creates a reusable filter that can be applied to future photos when captured.

Intelligent Gallery

This update also brings a variety of gallery features to help you organize your content. Thanks to AI technology, with Clean View enabled, the Gallery app automatically groups together similar shots of the same subject for a more organized gallery⁴. Users can easily review similar shots and select their favorite to serve as the photo group’s thumbnail. When viewing a photo in the gallery, you can zoom in on an image and press Quick Crop, located at the top left-hand corner, to crop photos to your desired size.

Easy Sharing Capabilities⁵

You can now share more content quickly. With Quick Share, you can see which of your contacts are nearby and share photos, videos, or even large files with multiple people. With Music Share, you can extend your paired Bluetooth connection and you don’t need to disconnect for a friend to play their music on a speaker or car stereo.

Samsung Electronics today unveiled the world’s first selfie sent to space, captured by actor, model and philanthropist Cara Delevingne and shown for the first time during a celebrity-filled event at the newly-opened Samsung KX experience space. The selfie is the first of many that Samsung will lift into the stratosphere this month as part of SpaceSelfie, a mission to give everyone the chance to get their face in space.

The event was hosted by Radio 1 DJ Clara Amfo who introduced Cara as she revealed her playful first SpaceSelfie – captured on her Samsung S10+ – with Cara holding up a peace sign and wearing an astronaut helmet. The moment was also commemorated with an epic group selfie, taken by Cara herself, and featured A-list event attendees including; Italian rapper, singer and songwriter Fedez, best known as a judge on the Italian X Factor and his 2019 hit ‘Holding Out For You’ featuring Zara Larsson.

Cara Delevingne said, “I’m honored to be Samsung’s SpaceSelfie pioneer! To celebrate, I wanted to take the first group selfie to go to space. I can’t wait for my fans to join us in space and get their hands on a SpaceSelfie of their own.”

On September 30, Samsung Electronics was awarded the 2019 ‘Best Wi-Fi Innovation Award’ by the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA). The honor was bestowed upon Samsung’s Galaxy S10 for its Intelligent Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi 6 innovations, making it the first smartphone to ever receive the award.

The Galaxy S10’s Intelligent Wi-Fi utilizes machine learning to ensure that users’ Wi-Fi connections are both smart and safe. The innovation enables the device to recognize when a user has entered a space where Wi-Fi connections are likely to be unstable, and automatically switch to LTE connectivity to avoid network interruption. What’s more, Intelligent Wi-Fi allows the device to more quickly detect weaker Wi-Fi signals in places like elevators, allowing it to transition from Wi-Fi to LTE connectivity much more quickly. Upon connecting to a new network, the function even allows the device to analyze traffic patterns and notify users if the network is suspicious, thus protecting them from dangers such as phishing and malware attacks.

The Galaxy S10’s Wi-Fi 6 capability provides smartphone support for next generation technology, boosting download and upload speeds by up to 20 percent compared to previous generations of Wi-Fi. When users are in crowded areas where Wi-Fi signals would usually be slow and unstable, Wi-Fi 6 allows for network connections that are about four times faster than those experienced by users of older Wi-Fi generations connecting in the same location. And surprisingly, this added speed and reliability actually uses less battery power, not more, allowing users to conserve power for when they need it.

The WBA Industry Awards have been honoring remarkable developments in Wi-Fi ecosystems globally for the past seven years. The awards acknowledge exceptional innovations in wireless networks, smart cities and remote wireless deployments in the interests of recognizing and encouraging excellence and promoting successful practices. Each shortlisted nomination is featured in a WBA Case Study so that the innovation may be shared with the wider industry.

The ‘Best Wi-Fi Innovations’ category acknowledges network operators and technology companies whose solutions are post-deployment, and “recognizes and celebrates innovations and deployments with Wi-Fi, which enable seamless and secure support, greater interoperability and/or transformational benefits to customers.”

Speaking about the recent awards win, Jong-Mu Choi, Head of Convergence R&D Group at Samsung Electronics said, “Samsung is proud that its Wi-Fi innovations have been recognized in such a way. The company will keep working to enable its devices to make use of these new Wi-Fi capabilities, so that the improved usability therein reaches consumers as quickly as possible.  One example of this is the Galaxy Note10’s recent accreditation as Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 6, which saw it join the Galaxy S10 as one of Samsung’s certified Wi-Fi 6-capable devices. Going forward, Samsung looks forward to utilizing faster, smarter Wi-Fi connections as the foundation that will allow it to continue bringing added convenience to users.”

Once Galaxy S10 users download the update, they’ll notice that their smartphone’s pro-grade camera has become even more powerful. The update expands the camera’s Night Mode to include support for the front-facing camera as well – offering users more freedom to snap vivid shots after dark. It also introduces enhanced Super steady video stabilization, as well as support for dynamic Galaxy Note10 functions like AR Doodle and Live focus video recording. The former lets users enhance their videos with fun, augmented-reality drawings and messages, while the latter lets them apply bokeh effects (including blur, big circle, color point and glitch) to videos recorded with the front or rear camera.

Whenever Galaxy S10 users capture a memorable clip, the camera’s new, Gallery app-accessible video editor offers all the tools they’ll need to turn it into a share-worthy video. This versatile feature makes it easy to edit videos like a pro, and features simple tools for trimming clips, stitching them together, adjusting playback speed and more. You can even use the function to add subtitles and background music to clips to make your content more unique.

The update also incorporates support for Samsung DeX for PC. Once users download the app from SamsungDeX.com, they’ll be able to launch Samsung DeX on their PC or Mac simply by connecting their Galaxy S10 to their computer via USB cable. Link to Windows support has also been added, which means that Galaxy S10 users will be able to wirelessly connect their phone to their Windows 10 PC and easily view its contents, send and receive messages, and sync recent photos directly from their computer.

Apps that Galaxy S10 users rely on every day, including Samsung Pass and Messages, have also been made more versatile and convenient. Now, Samsung Pass’s setup has been simplified, making it easier for Galaxy S10 users to utilize their device’s advanced biometric technologies to log in to apps and websites quickly and securely. In the Messages app, new icons for adding photos and videos have been positioned to the left of the text window to offer users easy access to the files they need.

As Jiyoung Mun, an engineer at Samsung Electronics’ Mobile R&D Office, explained, the Galaxy S10’s update reflects Samsung’s commitment to offering more users access to exceptional innovations. “At Samsung Electronics, we’re constantly exploring ways to offer Galaxy device users the best possible smartphone experience, and this software update is an extension of that commitment,” said Mun.

Samsung Electronics today announced that the Galaxy Note10 has been named by Wi-Fi Alliance as the first smartphone to be certified for a new standard in connected technology, Wi-Fi 6.

“As a pioneer in new mobile experiences Samsung is proud to be announced as one of the first companies to hold the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 6 accreditation,” said Inkang Song, Vice President and Head of Technology Strategy Group of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics. “The Galaxy Note10 is one of our flagship devices and the first smartphone classified Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 6. Along with the Galaxy S10 we’re thrilled to bring Wi-Fi 6 to our loyal customers.”

Wi-Fi 6 Enabling New Mobile Experiences

Wi-Fi is a critical piece of infrastructure required to enable the proper function of a growing number of both consumer and commercial devices. From televisions and appliances to security and communication systems, the expectations for everything, and everyone, to be connected is growing. Wi-Fi Alliance has led the development of industry agreed standards for devices for many years. With the launch of Wi-Fi 6 this year, a new certification has been launched to ensure that the highest possible standards are continuously met.

Wi-Fi 6 technology is building on the performance of previous Wi-Fi generations and is the latest technology to be launched from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). Wi-Fi 6 will operate in the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, offer greater capacity than previous generations and double the number of spatial streams. Devices certified by Wi-Fi Alliance, classed as “Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 6”, will deliver new capabilities for people in a range of situations.

• Wi-Fi 6 will allow family homes to better stream high-definition entertainment, simultaneously manage the connected home and efficiently support multiple devices.
• Outside, Wi-Fi 6 will improve connectivity in high population areas and provide a more consistent service as people move around towns and cities.
• In the enterprise, this new technology will enable greater automation and more advanced capabilities in healthcare monitoring and e-learning as well as continuing to handle large numbers of users and high volumes of data.

Samsung mobile devices with Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 6 will bring more reliable performance even in challenging environments¹. This is achieved through a number of the key features of Wi-Fi 6 technology. For example:

• Uplink and downlink Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) increases efficiency and lowers latency for high demand environments. This enables the Samsung Note10 to have stable connectivity in environments with many connected devices.

Summertime has come. A lot of people are interested in exercise, fitness, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle during this time of the season. Samsung Newsroom has decided to spend 24 hours with the Galaxy Watch Active to see if it is the perfect companion that will help me get the summer body.

Once I wore the watch, I immediately noticed the look and feel of the slim fit. Given its various activity-tracking features that include sleep tracking and stress detection, consumers could easily assume that the watch would appear to be bulkier in person. But the small and light 28mm display weighs only 25g that consumers with thin wrists and women can wear it with ease. Also, the watch straps are sturdy and smooth that does not collect dust. The Galaxy Watch Active is designed to keep the remaining strap tucked against your wrist, making it extremely convenient to use.

7:30 AM – Starting the Day with Sleep Tracking Data

The first thing I did when I woke up was to check the sleep tracking data. Using the Samsung Health app, the Galaxy Watch Active provides a rundown of the stages of sleep¹ through the night and sends personalized analysis related to my sleeping habits. Thanks to the sleep data, I realized that my sleeping habits were irregular. To build a healthier habit, I decided that I should try to go to bed at a certain time regularly to enhance my quality of sleep. And with the recent Software Update, it was easier for me to switch to ‘Goodnight Mode’ before I went to sleep. When it is time for me to go to bed based on my sleeping pattern, the device lets me know if I want to set the mode on. Once it is activated, it turns the sound and screen off so that I will not get distracted while I am asleep.

8:30 AM – Checking my Schedule Without Turning on the Phone

“Hi Bixby, show me today’s schedule.” When I was on my way to work, I asked Bixby to check my schedule for the day and the weather without taking the phone out of my bag. All of this is possible since my phone is synced with the Galaxy Watch Active. This was the most useful function especially when I was holding my bag or other larger personal belongings. Just by using the voice command, I was able to check my schedule, the weather, start recording my workout when I am exercising, and even control my home devices through SmartThings (an IoT app).

2:30 PM – How I can Charge My Watch Without a Battery Charger

During the afternoon, the Galaxy Active Watch sent a notification that the battery was running low. Though I can charge the watch with a battery charger, I don’t have to carry it with me all the time since I can simply use Wireless PowerShare on the Galaxy S10 to recharge. With Samsung’s device ecosystem that is seamlessly connected, it is very helpful.

4:00 PM – The Watch Vibrates When a Message Arrives

While I was concentrating on my work at the office, I felt a weak vibration on my wrist. I checked the watch and saw a text message from my friend asking me if I wanted to get some pizza this weekend. The great thing about the Galaxy Watch Active is that I don’t have to use my phone and unlock it to reply to a text since I can simply respond back using the watch. I can use my finger to draw an emoticon or use the keyboard and voice input to respond to long messages. Using these features, I texted back, “Love to .”

6:10 PM – Heading Home from Work, Taking the Stairs and Achieving my Workout Goals

A healthy habit starts with a single step. “Daily Activity” feature reminds me to move hourly, burn more calories and workout every day. When I am concentrating on my work at the office, I would not leave the desk for hours. However, when I receive notifications from the Galaxy Watch Active, I never forget to do some stretches every hour since the device detects my movement patterns. And though I usually tend to use the escalators when I am using the subway, I chose to take the stairs instead to reach my daily goals. The best feeling is when I get a notification telling me that I reached my daily goal.

8:00 PM – Exercising at Home Without the Help of a Personal Trainer

After a hard day at work, I still managed some time to exercise at home so that I can get that summer body. With the Galaxy Watch Active, the device can automatically detect and track seven types of exercise such as walking, running, riding a bike and swimming when I am working out for a certain amount of time. Not only that, I can check how much time I spent and how many calories I have burned by selecting an exercise routine from thirty-nine types of exercise from lunges to squats, yoga, etc. When I wanted to give up because it was getting too hard to exercise, I kept on going when I saw how close I was to meeting my goals from the watch. I was motivated to reach the targets and finished my daily workout. I have never felt so much accomplishment.

My 24 hours with the Galaxy Watch Active helped me to maintain healthier habits and increase activities. I could have easily given up if I were to go through the process all by myself. They say that pros do not make excuses on tools/devices, but it is also true that we rely on good tools to enhance our efficiency, including for workouts. Nothing captures a summer day at the beach quite like the unbridled joy of a canine smile – and nothing captures those smiles quite like the Galaxy S10’s Live Focus feature. Originally designed to give you the power to add background blur to your portraits, the Galaxy S10 offers a new selection of blur effects, allowing you to create a variety of artistic photos.

The new effects include zoom, spin, blur and color point. The latter option makes your subject stand out by keeping them in full color while painting the rest of the photo in black and white. When shooting in Live Focus mode, the new background options, as well as a slider that allows you to adjust the intensity of the effect you want to apply, appear just above the shutter button.

You can preview your selections in real-time, but if you’re still not happy after you take the shot don’t worry – you can choose a new effect and make adjustments in the Gallery app even after you’ve taken the picture.

2. Fit the Whole Shoreline in with the Ultra Wide Lens

While you’re enjoying a morning walk down the beach with your pup, make sure you spend some time taking in the scenery with the Galaxy S10’s Ultra Wide lens. Whether you’re trying to capture dramatic skies, or expansive shorelines, the 16MP Ultra Wide lens offers a 123-degree field-of-view so you can make your summer photos more interesting. Simply enter the camera app and click on the icon with three trees above the shutter button to use the Ultra Wide lens.

3. Get a Dog’s Perspective with Super Steady

Have you ever wondered what the world looks like from your dog’s point of view? The next time you’re out for a walk in the park, you can capture their perspective with the Galaxy S10’s Super Steady video stabilization, which allows you to record video without any shakiness. You will first have to install the app and set up an Instagram account for the option to appear in the menu above the shutter button in the Samsung Camera app. Once your account is ready, simply select the Instagram mode from the menu, take your photo or video, and you will be taken directly to Instagram where you can share what you captured in your Instagram Stories.

6. Shoot Stunning Sunsets at the Park

One of the best parts of summer is taking in the purple and pink skies of late evening sunsets – but getting crisp shots can be difficult in the fading light. As the above images shot with the 12MP Wide main camera demonstrate, the Galaxy S10 is capable of delivering incredible low-light performance. With an F1.5 aperture and larger 1.4 µm pixels, the camera is able to capture more light so you and your furry friend will be photographed in full detail while you’re catching the last rays of daylight. The Galaxy S10’s Super Slow-mo is the perfect tool to capture those moments, shooting in 960fps and capable of extending 0.4 seconds of action into a 14.8 second clip. Choose the Super Slow-mo option from the menu above the shutter button in the Samsung Camera app and hit record. After capturing the action, the Galaxy S10 processes it for you and produces a Super Slow-mo video in 720p HD resolution ready for your next social media post.

The ‘emoji’ originated in 1997 as a simple pictogram used to express emotion. But after years of evolution, the technology has progressed to the point that the Galaxy S10 AR (augmented reality) Emoji can transform your face into an animated version of itself before your eyes. Once you have your avatar, your AR Emoji can mirror a wide range of emotions and body movements with advanced facial and body tracking. You can even impose your AR Emoji on top of a photo of yourself and watch it move just like you!

Samsung Newsroom met with the developers of the Galaxy S10 AR Emoji, Yong-Il Kim, HanJun Ryu, MinKyung Lee, Jinho Lim, and MinSheok Choi, to discuss how they are leading the future of AR Emoji, and what’s next for the technology.

Q. What is the current trajectory of AR Emoji development?

The AR Emoji feature is a way to express and represent yourself. As we switched over from the Galaxy S9 to the Galaxy S10, we changed our focus from the representative ‘Avatar’ to the ‘Stylized Avatar’, which portrays users’ individual traits so attractively that they can’t help but show it off! To achieve this, we have created avatars that users feel affectionate toward because they represent their individual traits, but which also maintain a universal aesthetic appeal.

People use AR Emoji to reproduce themselves in the online sphere. Therefore, the feature must be able to portray not only their physical appearance, but also their online personality. We are continually coming up with ways for users to more freely and uniquely personalize their AR Emojis.

Q. What makes AR Emoji special?

The AR Emoji feature’s biggest differentiator is that it starts off by making a complete, detailed figure that best reflects the user’s actual traits. AR Emoji has avatar shapes to suit everyone and features a huge number of ways for users to represent their unique characteristics.

The features available in AR Emoji on the Galaxy S10 line include ‘Mask’ mode, ‘Mini motion’ and ‘Live figure’, all of which can be used in a range of situations. Because the AR Emoji feature is a specialized camera function, it can be used within the default camera app. It has proven to be a popular feature among users.

With ‘Mini motion’, body movements are captured so that the AR Emoji moves just like the user.

Q. What was your process for developing AR Emoji?

During planning it is important to identify the users’ needs. To figure out what these were, we monitored our acquaintances, families and a range of online communities to make sure that we made an AR Emoji that everyone would be satisfied with.

In the design stage, we considered how we could best express users’ emotions through facial expressions and stickers. The most common human emotions were categorized, then we had to establish the various degrees of each emotion. For example, there are many different kinds of sadness. Some make you want to scream, some make you want burst into tears, and some only cause a downturn of the mouth. When we struggled to find specific references for certain emotions, our team stepped in as actors to record their emotions. During this process, having emotive team members was a big help! Our recording sessions were always full of laughter.

Also, as an AR Emoji is a full body avatar, we needed to include a wide range of fashionable clothing items, shoes and accessories to make sure users had enough options to choose from. Research was very important at this stage, and some of our team members scoured shopping malls to ensure that we chose the right clothing options.

The version of AR Emoji that’s available on the Galaxy S10 line has updated editing tools. In developing these, we had to make internal decisions about how we were going to structuralize and define every component of the 3D data. For instance, we had to make decisions like ‘let’s divide the bone structure of the arm into five parts, and cover two of them with the sleeve while the rest are just bare arm.’ This was a useful process though, because as we were defining the details, a number of other potential features occurred to us. For example, we added the shadows on the avatar’s backs during this stage.

For more customization and creativity, users can utilize their own AR Emoji to create stickers.

Q. Do you have any tips for how best to use the AR Emoji feature?

You can use your avatar to make stickers that can be sent via messenger. This feature allows you to send customized emoji stickers with any expression you like. You can also create memes or stickers that include text to give the image more context.

A mask mode that applies your avatar’s face over your own is another useful function. When you need to take a photo but you haven’t had time to get yourself camera-ready, you can cover your face with an emoji. AR Emojis can also be very helpful for the many online creators who like to dress up or disguise themselves while recording their videos.

‘Mini motion’ is a function that both adults and children can enjoy. If you enjoy dancing, it can be fun to have a virtual figure to dance along with, instead of dancing alone.

Users can have more fun with the ‘Mask mode’, which adds the AR Emoji’s face onto users’ faces.

Q. Can you tell us what’s currently being worked on with regards to AR Emoji?

We are thinking about how AR Emojis can be used in new ways, such as users being able to play as their avatars in games. We are also working on incorporating popular characters into AR Emoji, as well as allowing users to custom-add things like make-up and tattoos so they can better express themselves with their emojis.

The global trends are centered around incorporating more and more decorative tools. However, we have also tried to be focus on being inclusive, with features like artificial hands currently available, and artificial legs to become available soon. By continuing to add more customization tools to AR Emoji, we hope to help people better express themselves. But we also want to see AR Emojis become a place where users’ imaginations can be brought to life.

We’re looking for ways to allow users to represent not just their faces, but their bodies too. Another area of focus is finding a way to utilize AR Emojis on other Samsung apps. Users can currently set their phones to display contacts’ emojis when they call, but we are exploring other uses that include a mask mode for video calls too.

As developers, our priority is to improve usability. Currently, in ‘Live figure’ mode, users can tap the figure on the screen to trigger a range of gestures and dances. We want to make these motions more fluid, while also expanding the feature by incorporating further actions and promoting deeper interaction between users and their emojis.

Q. What does the future hold for AR Emoji?

I hope AR Emoji will offer users a chance to familiarize themselves with AR technology and become more comfortable using it. As virtual reality-based services are commercialized and become more common, we expect AR emojis to be the best method for people to represent themselves in the virtual sphere.

Ultimately, our goal is to make AR Emoji a personified visual assistant in the coming age of AI (Artificial Intelligence). For example, currently Bixby can give us updates on the weather, but I believe that information could be delivered more effectively by an AR Emoji holding an umbrella.

The Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode is the perfect tool for capturing photos after the sun has gone down. Accessible from the Camera app, Night Mode can be manually toggled on and off whenever you wish to use it in the Camera app’s sliding menu. Compared with photos taken without it switched on, Night Mode minimizes the noise from a dark environment to enhance a photo’s details and corrects colors, along with other image qualities, to make the resulting low-light shots more vivid.

Samsung Newsroom traveled to some of the top landmarks around Seoul after dark to see how the Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode can bring out every detail in a nighttime scene, even in low light conditions.

A Palace for All Hours of the Day

Deoksu Palace is one of Seoul’s four ancient palaces, drawing visitors keen to take in its striking architecture day and night.

Junghwajeon, one of the royal courts of Deoksu Palace, was built in 1902 and has a remarkable golden exterior featuring intricate patterns, colors and textures that are not easy to capture at night. However, by simply turning on Night Mode on the Galaxy S10+, all the courts’ details come to life, thanks to Night Mode’s intelligent gradation adjustment that brings vibrancy to pictures taken after dark. Try using a tripod to level the top and bottom of the frame for an ever better shot of the ancient palace that captures every striking detail.

While the Galaxy range’s Night Mode function previously only automatically activated when conditions were very dark (below 1 lux), the Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode now allows users to make the most out of it as they can manually switch it on or off and use it for lighter nighttime scenes.

Stand-Out Statues Amid City Life

Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Plaza, often bustling with pedestrians, is a place where the traditional and the modern come together. Neon lights from the buildings that flag it, along with the bright lights of passing cars, make up a vibrant patchwork of color during the nighttime, but can easily drown out the statues at the Plaza’s heart in pictures.

Thanks to the Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode, the two statues that sit right at the heart of downtown Seoul (Admiral Yi Sun-sin, first picture, Sejong the Great, second picture) can be captured without any compromise to the eclectic lighting of their surroundings. Night Mode lowers camera sensitivity and decreases shutter speed, capturing bright lighting well despite the high contrast. Paired with the Ultra Wide lens of the Galaxy S10 line, Night Mode provides after-dark shots that can capture everything in the camera’s field of vision.

When Urban Meets Rural

Naksan Park in northern Seoul features vistas that include a striking contrast between the area’s historic fortress wall, idyllic mountain views and the nighttime bustle of downtown Seoul.

But Galaxy S10+ users need not worry about losing any detail when capturing close (first picture) or wide (second picture) shots of scenes with such subject contrast. Without Night Mode switched on, distinct features of the landscape would be lost, with city lights obscuring lower contrast areas such as the striking mountainous terrains in the far distance. But just by switching Night Mode on, you can maximize the visibility of your shot thanks to its intelligent noise reduction that balances different areas of contrast and light to cleanly bring out a shot’s every aspect – even in low-light conditions.

Sunset By the River

The Hangang Riverside Park lights up as the sun goes down, and the variety of different lighting attractions on display reflect in the Han River to often dazzling effect. Yet capturing this display of light from a variety of different light sources, from the natural light of the fading sun to the colorful façade of the Hangang Floating Islands, can present a challenge when looking to achieve balance in twilight pictures.

With the Galaxy S10+’s Night Mode, pictures emerge more vibrantly thanks to its auto color-correcting software, resulting in bright and clean shots that carefully negotiate all the different sources of light on offer. For an even more vivid take, users can alter Night Mode’s settings for lower exposure correction to capitalize on the darker aspects of a scene – without losing any of the color or detail.

Bird’s Eye Views

Seoul’s Namsan Tower sits an impressive 479.7 meters above sea level, offering visitors a scenic, near-panoramic view of the city which comes to life as the sun sets.

One of Namsan Tower’s best offerings to visitors is the opportunity it presents for you to capture shots of the sprawling city that lies below it – as well as of the striking tower itself against a diverse backdrop. But cloudy weather conditions add more disruptive photographic noise to pictures that obscures the details of a shot, especially for long-distance vistas.

Just by sliding Night Mode on in the Camera app, Galaxy S10+ users can take shots that bring out the vivid colors of this cityscape at night thanks to Night Mode’s intelligent noise reduction capabilities. 1. Jump to Your Favorite Apps Securely with Lock Screen ‘App Shortcuts’

Security meets convenience in the Galaxy S10 line’s lock screen app shortcuts. With this enhanced feature you can secure the apps pinned to your lock screen with a handy ‘finger scan and swipe’ motion. Simply scan your fingerprint as usual, then swipe up from the fingerprint sensor to an app icon to open it. In situations where you need to access your most-used apps quickly, snap straight to them from the lock screen without compromising on security.

The Galaxy S10’s in-display Ultrasonic Fingerprint Scanner offers vault-like security with its FIDO Alliance-certified anti-spoofing technology. Now, your fingerprint scanner is not only a top-notch security measure, but a platform to launch your favorite apps quickly and securely.

2. Streamline Your Life with ‘Bixby Routines’

Imagine; as soon as you get into your car in the morning, music fills the space and Bixby turns on voice controls, all without you having to touch a thing. Then, as you arrive at work, vibration mode is activated and Wi-Fi disconnects. As your day goes on, your smart assistant moves seamlessly through various other pre-arranged routines, ensuring that your device is always the perfect complement to where you are and what you’re doing. What’s more, once you’ve set a few routines manually, Bixby learns from your habits and suggests new routines that it thinks will suit you. There’s no need to be constantly taking your phone out to fiddle with settings when you’ve got ‘Bixby Routines’ to take care of the little things.

Setting up manual routines is easy too. If you’re taking a walk, set a routine so that music plays as soon as you connect your headphones, then have your phone activate Wi-Fi and open YouTube as you arrive back home. Playing a game? Set a routine so that you enter ‘Do not disturb’ mode upon opening the game, and notifications don’t distract you.

The list of conditions that can be programmed to trigger settings adjustments and new actions is endless. And with ‘Bixby Routines’, the more routines you set, the easier life becomes.

3. Keep a Hand Free with ‘One-handed Mode’

Have you ever been holding something important in one hand, and trying to use your phone with the other? How many of us have been in the middle of cooking, and when we go to check the recipe on our phones only one of our hands is clean? With the Galaxy S10 line’s edge-to-edge screen, reaching up to pull down the notifications bar or interact with other features near the top of the screen can require regripping the phone or using your other hand. But no more, with the Galaxy S10’s optimized ‘One-handed mode’.

This feature is easily activated with either a quick swipe up from the corner of the screen (with ‘Gesture Controls’ enabled), or a triple-tap of the home key. Once turned on, the feature brings up a miniature version of your screen that puts even the features right at the top of the display well within reach. After using one-handed mode to navigate to the feature you want to use, simply tap the black area next to the downsized screen to snap your display up to full size again.

4. Stretch Your Screen with ‘Gesture Controls’

Want to get the most out of your edge-to-edge AMOLED display? On the Galaxy S10 line, enabling ‘Full-screen gestures’ will remove the navigation bar at the bottom of your screen, and allow you to perform the same actions with simple swipes up from the left, right and center spots at the bottom of your screen. Prefer a different orientation for the swipe spots? Customize the layout and swap the positions for the ‘back’ and ‘recent apps’ swipe positions. The central swipe spot remains the ‘home’ option.

Smooth and intuitive, the Galaxy S10 line’s complete gesture control system allows for the removal of navigation buttons that take up your screen space. Three minimal grey lines are visible at the very bottom of the screen to avoid any confusion over swipe positions. Utilizing machine learning gleaned from the analysis of more than 100 million photos, the Galaxy S10 line’s ‘Shot suggestion’ feature helps you take pictures like a pro. Once you turn the feature on, just follow the visual prompts on the screen and watch your ‘best shot’ fall effortlessly into place.

‘Shot suggestion’ is ideal for when you want to show a single person or place in a lot of different lights, as the AI suggests a varied range of compositional styles. Especially helpful for nature and landscape shots, ‘Shot suggestion’ ensures the horizon is level, while helping you improve your proportions and positioning. 8. Compose Visual Media like a Pro with ‘Grid Lines’

The key when composing a shot from a ‘bird’s eye’ angle – for instance when taking photos of food –is to ensure the camera is held completely level.

The ‘Grid lines’ feature on the Galaxy S10 line helps you produce well-balanced bird’s eye shots. A lack of color reproduction could be to blame. When it comes to color reproduction, it doesn’t matter how well a photo is shot, nor how high-quality the camera may be. Like Samsung’s QLED TVs, the Galaxy S10’s display has been certified by Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker (VDE) to produce 100 percent color volume in the DCI-P3 color range. This means that just like Samsung’s latest TVs, the Galaxy S10 can be counted upon to deliver a viewing experience that’s second to none. While previous Galaxy devices’ AMOLED displays have supported a wide range of colors, the Galaxy S10’s display takes color reproduction to the next level, producing true-to-life colors at the highest brightness levels.

The Dynamic AMOLED display received a score of 0.4 from DisplayMate for their evaluation of its Just Noticeable Color Difference (JNCD)². This stunning level of color reproduction makes watching a movie or show on the Dynamic AMOLED display a cinematic experience. It also helps ensure that when shopping for clothes or other products online, the colors of the items that you see on your screen will closely match the colors of those items in real life.

A World-Class (2,000,000:1) Contrast Ratio

When watching a movie or playing video games, the deeper the contrast, the more immersive the visual experience. In fact, the ability to make out shadowy figures in the dark can mean the difference between life and death when you’re playing a first-person shooter game.

The Galaxy S10 line takes gaming and watching videos to the next level with an industry-best, VDE-certified 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio. This opens the door for even more accurate color gradation³ and enables the display to produce exceptional detail and deeper contrast.

When gaming, greater contrast makes it that much easier to navigate dark settings and spot items and lurking enemies. When watching dark scenes in a film like the latest space-set thriller, the enhanced contrast allows even the most subtle of details to shine through.

The Galaxy S10 line’s camera plays a unique role across the range’s devices; not only does it take top quality photos and videos, but it also provides users with the opportunity to be creative with their background wallpapers thanks to the placement of the front camera hole.

Harnessing the creativity this display characteristic unlocks, Samsung Electronics and Disney recently launched a new range of background wallpaper options. Following on from the Disney AR Emojis released last year, Samsung and Disney have brought fan-favorite characters from Disney and Pixar’s The Incredibles and Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Frozen and Zootopia right to the home screens of the Galaxy S10.

One of the groundbreaking innovations the Galaxy S10 line features is its full-screen experience, made possible by the Infinity-O Display that covers, bar the camera hole, the entire front side of the device. Thanks to precise laser cutting techniques, the camera has been tucked away into the right hand side of the display to eliminate distractions for a cinematic viewing experience.

Since the launch of the Galaxy S10 line, many eye-catching and creative wallpaper designs have emerged. Users themselves have been creating and sharing their own background wallpapers custom-designed for the Galaxy S10’s Infinity-O Display, taking advantage of its unique design, camera hole placement and the impressive screen real estate on offer.

Samsung wallpapers are available to purchase on the Galaxy Store, and the special Disney collaboration range of wallpapers are downloadable free of charge for Galaxy S10 users.¹ Samsung plans to expand the options for Infinity-O background wallpapers further through various collaborations in the near future.

According to recent findings from Counterpoint Research, nearly half of all global smartphone users spend more than five hours a day on their mobile device. Once the sun goes down, studies show that the blue light from your smartphone’s screen and other artificial light sources can throw your biological clock out of whack – making it harder to fall asleep, and possibly causing more serious problems down the line.

To safeguard users’ eyes from blue light’s potentially harmful effects, Samsung equipped the Galaxy S10 line with a display that reduces users’ exposure to blue light wavelengths – without compromising picture quality. Let’s take a closer look at how blue light affects our eyes, and how the Galaxy S10’s display protects them.

Why Blue Light Exposure Matters

Blue light is generally defined as a high-intensity, short-wavelength (380 to 500-nanometer) range of light on the visible light spectrum.

These days, whether it’s through our electronic devices’ screens, energy efficient lighting, or simply sunlight, we’re constantly being exposed to blue light. Which isn’t all bad. According to the Royal Society Te Apārangi, a not-for-profit organization based in New Zealand, “Adequate exposure to daylight, particularly during the morning, is important for synchronizing the circadian body clock, which can affect many processes including sleep, metabolism, immune function and even our mood.”

However, when viewed at night, blue light has been shown to suppress the production of melatonin (a hormone that regulates sleep–wake cycles) more powerfully than other types of light, affecting our ability to sleep. Recent research from the University of Toledo also suggests that blue light from mobile devices can cause harm to the eye’s retina.

In this digital age, with smartphone users spending increasingly more time on their mobile devices, it’s easy to see why blue-light reducing technology has become absolutely necessary.

How the Galaxy S10 Reduces Blue Light Transmission

The Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, Galaxy S10e and Galaxy S10 5G’s Dynamic AMOLED display was built from the ground up to minimize eye strain so users can get a better night’s sleep.

Galaxy S10 users can sleep soundly knowing that their smartphone’s display has been certified by world-renowned testing firm TÜV Rheinland¹ to drastically reduce blue light’s harmful effects. When building the display, which received TÜV Rheinland’s official ‘Eye Comfort’ certification, Samsung applied new organic materials that reduce blue light wavelengths measuring between 415 and 455nm (the range that research² suggests is particularly harmful to the retina) by up to 42 percent³ – without the use of filters.

This significant reduction in blue light transmission is the product of Samsung’s continuous commitment to developing industry-leading AMOLED technology. The Dynamic AMOLED display reduces the transmission of ‘harmful’ blue light (wavelengths in the 415 to 455nm range) to below 7 percent – the industry’s lowest mark. This means that the Galaxy S10’s display reduces nearly 50 percent more blue light than previous AMOLED displays (approx. 12 percent), and more than 60 percent more than most smartphone LCD displays (approx. 18 percent).

The Galaxy S10’s display also produces incredibly lifelike colors. To enable users to enjoy crisp, immersive colors day or night, Samsung went to great lengths to ensure that the display’s blue-light reducing innovations wouldn’t compromise image quality.

Samsung’s Mobile Digital Natural Image engine (mDNIe) is one such example of an image quality-preserving innovation. Whereas with previous smartphones’ displays, activating a blue-light filter would inevitably add a noticeable tint to the screen, this proprietary technology enables the Galaxy S10’s display to produce vibrant, immersive colors⁴ and reduce blue light transmission at the same time.

To offer users additional protection, the Galaxy S10 also features a built-in blue-light filter, accessible via the Quick Panel, that blocks up to 99 percent of blue light wavelengths. Users also have the option to set the blue-light filter to turn on automatically before they go to bed by activating Bixby’s preset ‘Before bed’ Routine, accessible under Settings > Advanced features > Bixby Routines.

As ByungChang Kwak of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Division explained, in addition to opting for a blue-light reducing smartphone like the Galaxy S10, there are simple things that consumers can do to help protect their eyes when using electronics devices. “For example, adjusting ambient lighting to minimize screen glare can help reduce eye strain,” said Kwak, “and remembering to blink frequently can help prevent dry eye.”

Going forward, Kwak added, “Samsung will continue to develop technologies that promote better health and make the user experience more convenient.”

The latest addition to Samsung’s Galaxy S series, the Galaxy S10+, was recently rated “Best of Test” by PROTESTE, the largest consumer protection association in Latin America.

The Galaxy S10+ took the top spot in PROTESTE’s smartphone rankings with a record-setting score of 85 points (out of 100). In second and third place are the Galaxy S10 with 84 points, and the Note9 with 83. The Galaxy S10e ranked sixth with 82 points, and the Galaxy S9+ ranked eighth with 81, which means that half of the top ten smartphones in PROTESTE’s rankings are Samsung Galaxy devices.

The Galaxy S10+ stood out in a variety of tests, and was particularly impressive in the portion that evaluated resistance to shocks and water. To test the Galaxy S10+’s durability, PROTESTE repeatedly dropped the device from a height of 90cm, and immersed it in a container of water for an extended period of time.

“We evaluated points that are often extremely important to consumers, such as resistance and the battery,” said Thiago Leite Porto e Silva, a specialist in technology products at PROTESTE. “The Galaxy S10+ exceeded our expectations, and surprised us with the highest grade ever earned in our tests.”

The Galaxy S10+’s top ranking is a testament to the innovation of its features. “This ranking demonstrates that the consumer is at the center of our efforts and development, and will always be our main driving force,” said Jeonghwan Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of Samsung Electronics Latin America.

Visualize Your New Room

Samsung’s AR service, Bixby Vision¹, acts as a visual guide, allowing you to see more with your smartphone camera. The home décor function of the Galaxy S10’s Bixby Vision can show you how your home might look with new home appliances and furniture, virtually positioning them wherever you wish to see them. To enable the function, simply open up Bixby Vision, select the home décor function from the apps menu and point your camera to the area where you want to place home appliances or furniture. After choosing an appliance or piece of furniture, the object will appear wherever you tap on the screen. You can choose sofas, rugs, tables, fridges, or any other home product that you want, and virtually place them wherever you like.

The discovery doesn’t end there: Bixby Vision offers even more services that allow you to visualize your new appliances and furniture from the comfort of your own home. The AR service can apply a 3D effect to key Samsung home appliances, allowing you to see how doors open, for example. Collaborating with U.S. online furniture company, Wayfair, Bixby Vision’s home décor function runs automatically whenever you encounter 3D content on the website within the Samsung Internet app, enabling you to see what the product would look like in your room without leaving your house.

“We are planning to increase the types of home appliances and furniture that support the home décor function,” said Martin Lee of Product Strategy team at Samsung Electronics.

Check for the Right Fit

With the Galaxy S10 5G, you can make speedy assessments of an object’s dimensions without frantically searching for the tape measure. Using the 3D Depth Camera on the Galaxy S10 5G, the Quick Measure app shows you the height, width and length of the object captured by your camera. This feature makes it easier for you to buy a mattress that fits your bed frame, or a set of chairs that are the right height for your kitchen table.

The smartphones’ boxes and interior packaging have been redesigned so as to reduce their environmental footprint and consume fewer resources. For example, whereas previous devices’ packaging included a box-covering sleeve, a holder tray and a bottom box, the Galaxy S10 retains just the bottom box. The smartphones’ packaging also includes an all-in-one pulp mold¹ that optimizes space for the devices and their components, and minimizes waste.

Other eco-friendly adjustments include replacing plastic ties with paper materials, and outfitting the smartphones’ chargers with a matte – rather than glossy – finish that doesn’t require a plastic protective film.

Samsung Electronics has been steadily increasing its use of eco-friendly materials in its mobile devices’ packaging for several years now. In 2013, Samsung introduced its first 100% recycled packaging, made entirely from discarded paper; In 2014, it introduced its first 100% recycled paper foldable box; In 2015, the company took steps to simplify the designs of its mobile devices’ packaging; In 2016, Samsung began to utilize natural materials in its plastic packaging; In 2017 and 2018, it introduced pulp mold device holder trays and pulp mold packaging, respectively; And this year, with the Galaxy S10 line, the company introduced its first plastic-free packaging design.

The convenient app, which allows you to view all of your installed games at once, is packed with intuitive tools designed to help you get the most out of your gaming experience. These allow you to, for example, instantly mute your games’ sound before you begin to play, and make detailed adjustments to game settings in order to optimize performance or save power.

The in-game accessible Game Tools menu offers users even more ways to take their gaming experience to the next level. The handy menu includes options to disable calls and notifications while gaming – to minimize distractions – and makes it easy to snap in-game screenshots, record gameplay, lock navigation buttons, and activate the Galaxy S10+’s Dolby Atmos for Gaming mode.

For the Galaxy S10 line, Samsung brought new, advanced hardware and software-based technologies to the camera, including cutting-edge, AI-powered features. In order to learn more about the phones’ pro-grade camera system – which features an Ultra Wide lens, Super Steady video recording, and a built-in Neural Processing Unit (NPU) – Samsung Newsroom sat down with Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Communications Division’s camera developers and product planner.

The Power of the Ultra Wide Lens

The secret to taking incredible photos with the Galaxy S10 line is the Ultra Wide lens. The addition of the Ultra Wide lens was a major moment for Samsung, and represents one of the biggest changes to the Galaxy series in generations. Now, users can capture every detail of an epic landscape, or fit the entire family into one group shot without having to move back.

“Users expect more than just improved image quality with a new device. They want a camera that makes it easier to take amazing photos,” explained product planner Sunyong Kim. “The Ultra Wide lens features a 123-degree field of view, just like the human eye, so you can easily capture the moment just as you see it.”

With the Ultra Wide lens, users can easily take dynamic pictures using the camera’s Live Focus function and Panorama mode. “Live Focus has been available on previous Samsung devices with the Telephoto and Wide-angle lenses, but for the Galaxy S10 line, we brought it to the Ultra Wide lens as well,” noted Sugon Baek. “What’s more, Panorama mode offers more vertical scope than previous models did, and greatly reduces the need to move the camera from left to right in order to capture the full shot.”

Shake-Free Video Quality

Another new innovation that’s built into the Galaxy S10 line is the camera’s Super Steady video-recording feature, which offers users enhanced video stabilization.²

Super Steady works by using VDIS (Video Digital Image Stabilization) technology. It predicts user movements before filming starts, and once the camera is running, it calculates the adjustment range to minimize shakiness in videos.

“In the past, achieving optimum video stabilization meant sacrifices for the camera’s angle of view,” noted Wonseok Song. “A conventional wide-angle camera couldn’t solve the problem. But thanks to the Ultra Wide lens, the S10 is able to support a natural viewing angle while also offering stability and quality.”

Given that the adjustment capability of the Super Steady technology is best for capturing bigger movements, Song has a tip for users filming in different conditions: “For scenes that feature less action in low light, use the camera’s normal mode. For brighter scenes that feature more movement, Super Steady is best.”

A Camera That’s Smart

The Galaxy S10 doesn’t just have the most advanced camera system on a Galaxy phone, it also has the smartest. In a first for Galaxy smartphones, the Galaxy S10 includes a next-generation NPU that automatically optimizes pictures in up to 30 different categories.

“We added 10 additional categories to optimize common photos, including ‘Dog,’ ‘Drink,’ and ‘Shoe,’” explained Seoyoung Lee. ‘Dog’ mode, she added, optimizes users’ pictures by focusing on fine details, such as strands of fur, whereas categories like ‘Shoe’ and ‘Clothing’ focus on objects’ colors, since most pictures of these objects are taken without people’s faces in the frame. “We also added ‘Drink’ category because we noticed the growing trend of people sharing pictures of their cocktails on social media.”

The Galaxy S10 line’s camera also provides suggestions of ways to potentially improve photos through its Shot Suggestion function. Based on the Galaxy S10 line’s machine learning capabilities, Shot Suggestion references a database of over 100 million users’ pictures to offer helpful tips on improving overall composition, positioning and proportions for photos of various subjects, including people, animals and vehicles. “The AI-based suggestions have been developed not just to prioritize putting the subject at the center of a photo,” said Lee. “That way, no matter how you want to set up your shot, the Galaxy S10 will help you do it in the most striking way possible.”

Seeing the Whole Picture

In developing the Galaxy S10 line’s camera, the team focused on engineering technologies that add real value to the camera experience, rather than simply increasing the number of lenses and features available.

“The camera is for more than documenting and recording,” explained Kim. “It is now the means through which we communicate.”

From the Ultra Wide lens, to Super Steady, to the NPU – and to other features, like Instagram mode, new filters, enhanced Bixby Vision, and easy shifting between lenses – the Galaxy S10 helps users do more with their camera than they ever could before. For all of those users who say a great camera is the top feature they’re looking for in a smartphone, Samsung has planted the flag.

The Samsung Newsroom sat down with the Galaxy S10 design team to learn more about how they created the most striking Galaxy lineup yet.

A Whole New Spectrum of Colors and Materials

The overarching design concept of the Galaxy S10 line is: “Radical, Magical”. From its bright colors and luxurious materials, to its sleek shape and bold display, the Galaxy S10 delivers radical change with a magical feel. Focusing on “prism colors”, the design team aimed to create iridescent hues that change depending on how they catch the light, so each device refracts light to produce a vast spectrum of colors.

“To create Prism White, we overlaid around 1,000 sheets of nanofilms together, each with different reflectivity,” explained Duyeong Choi, a member of the Design Team’s CMF Group responsible for color. “It was especially difficult to fine-tune which colors would stand out the most.”

In addition to adopting the prismatic design, the team also introduced bold new colors that are particularly attractive to Millennials and Gen Z. Youngmi Shin, in charge of the design strategy division from the Design Team elaborated: “We chose playful colors in line with current trends, with ‘Canary Yellow^*’ for the Galaxy S10e based on the viral-hit color Gen Z Yellow and ‘Flamingo Pink^*’ for the Galaxy S10e, S10, and S10+.”

In a Galaxy-first, the team also introduced premium, ceramic backs for the Galaxy S10+ with the colors Ceramic Black and Ceramic White. Recalling traditional ceramicware, which is heated to 1,400- degrees centigrade to achieve a tough exterior, the Galaxy S10+’s ceramic backs offer greater strength and durability, as well as better scratch resistance, thanks to an added inner layer of scatter-protection film. The beautiful ceramic finish is the result of an intense, 200 hour-long process, handled by Samsung from start to finish. “Some users want a more sophisticated look and substantive feel for their device,” Shin said.

“The Galaxy S10 line is defined by choice. From the option of a flat display and compact form factor of the Galaxy S10e, to the larger, end-to-end displays of the S10 and S10+, there’s something for everybody,” Seungho Jang, a member of the Flagship Product Design Group in the Design Team, emphasized.

The Difference is in the Detail

Ensuring that the Galaxy S10 line was free of any friction or frustration was a top priority for the designers. For instance, the team had to position the front camera so that it did not interfere with content on the display, and they had to optimize the refractive ratio of the display to minimize bezels.

There were also larger challenges. A secure, comfortable grip is a vitally important consideration for a smartphone, so the form factor was a major point of focus for the design team.

“The Galaxy S10’s feeling of openness comes from its shape at the edges,” Jang continued. “We shaped the sides of the device to be smooth and solid like a pebble. Not only does it feel great in your hand, it reduces the shadow on the display from reflected light.” 

These design choices can influence the integrity of the display—especially one as technologically advanced as the Infinity-O Display. Dongkyun Kim of the design team recalled the development process: “The key is finding the perfect balance between the feelings of solidness and slimness.”

Putting it All Together

With the Galaxy S10 line, every decision—big or small—mattered. The result is something extraordinary: a device that honors the Galaxy legacy and sets a new standard for the smartphone.

Seungho Jang reflected: “In smartphone design, continual innovation is no easy task, but we are always listening to users, and are committed to pushing the boundaries of design to create Galaxy devices that everyone can enjoy.”

Bixby’s introduction in 2017 laid the groundwork for the creation of a connected, open ecosystem of devices and services that allows you to get more done, more comfortably. Now, the platform’s latest update has introduced even more ways for users to simplify their day, including the all-new ability to customize your Galaxy device’s Bixby key in a way that works for you.

The Bixby key allows you to access Bixby anytime, anywhere, with a simple press of a button. When the Bixby was first introduced, a single press would pull up Bixby Home, while a press and hold would allow you to speak to Bixby directly. The new Bixby takes the Bixby key’s convenience to the next level by allowing you to use it to instantly activate an app or one of your Quick commands of your choosing.

To facilitate this handy function, Samsung incorporated the ability to launch Bixby main page with either a single or double press, and customize the remaining option to activate a favorite feature. As Samsung’s Executive Vice President and Head of Software and Artificial Intelligence, Eui-Suk Chung, explained, adding this capability allows users to access frequently used Quick commands or apps faster and more flexibly.

“Our top priority is to offer our consumers the best possible experiences,” said Chung. “So we’re constantly listening to and learning from them. Because they’ve expressed that they’d like more tools to get things done quickly and easily, we decided to offer them the freedom to customize the Bixby key.”

Another useful function of the Bixby key lies in Bixby’s enhanced Dictation feature. Sometimes, it can be very inconvenient to have to manually type out a long text, email or memo on a small keyboard. Bixby’s Dictation function simplifies these situations by allowing you to use the Bixby key to quickly and easily dictate your message directly into your phone. With the keyboard open, simply press and hold the Bixby key to begin your message, and release it once you’ve said what you want to say. It’s as simple as that.

Since first introducing it in 2017, Samsung has consistently improved Bixby based on users’ feedback. One of the ways that the company enhanced the Bixby key specifically was by minimizing instances of accidental Bixby activations. When the Bixby key is pressed while your phone is in your pocket, or when your screen is locked, because it’s unlikely that you intended to do so, the Bixby key has been calibrated not to launch Bixby in these situations.

The next part of the Bixby key’s enhancement process involved enabling the key to launch Bixby with a double press. When using your phone to watch a video or take a picture, for instance, accidentally pressing the Bixby key could interrupt your enjoyment. Adding this capability minimizes this inconvenience, as users are not likely to press the Bixby key twice by mistake.

As Chung explained, going forward, Samsung will continue to enrich the Bixby key with new capabilities that add convenience to users’ lives. “Our guiding rule at Samsung is to evolve our products and technologies in ways that are meaningful to consumers,” said Chung. “Just as Bixby’s evolution is ongoing, so too is the Bixby key’s.”

Thanks to these cutting-edge developments, the Galaxy S10 line offers a display with a brilliant, realistic picture quality whilst being comfortable on the user’s eyes and able to reflect various color preferences. Samsung Newsroom sat down with Byungduk Yang, Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Communications Division to learn more about how the Galaxy S10 line’s display is at the core of the user’s mobile experience.

A User-Friendly Approach to Display Technology

Yang’s development philosophy for mobile displays puts the user first; “providing practical screen solutions and new experiences have become our core values,” explained Yang. “As a result, the Galaxy S10 line’s display focuses on providing interesting experiences and real-life benefits to users, beyond just good picture quality or display size.”

Of course, one of the key innovations of the Galaxy S10 line is the full screen experience provided by the ‘Infinity-O Display’ that covers, bar the camera, the entire front side of the device. In order to seamlessly integrate the front camera into the display, a small and precise hole is made in the screen using a delicate laser cutting technique and advanced barrier technology. These procedures maximize screen real estate, enhancing the reliability of barrier performance of AMOLED pixels around the hole. Therefore, users’ visual experience is maintained, or even more improved on the Infinity-O Display along with Dynamic AMOLED technology at the highest quality possible. “The Galaxy S10 line’s full display offers picture quality that is more realistic than before,” noted Yang.

But the Galaxy S10 line’s display provides real-life benefits and experiences to users beyond just high picture quality. “We wanted to achieve a ‘user-friendly’ display,” explained Yang. “Display-based devices are known to harm users’ retinas after prolonged use to due blue light emissions. This is particularly a problem at night, when exposure to blue light inhibits melatonin production which can affect sleep patterns. But the Galaxy S10 line’s display delicately manipulates the wavelength of blue OLED to remove the harmful energy, which means the device can be used for a long time with minimal damage to the user’s eyes.”

Previously, smartphone displays used regular software to reduce the amount of blue light emanating from the display. But the Galaxy S10 line harnesses a technology that reduces blue light exposure by 42% more than the previous technique, without compromising picture quality. “We have even received an Eye Comfort Certification from TÜV Rheinland,” enthused Yang. “Users will definitely notice than their eyes are less strained when using the Galaxy S10.”

Changing the Way We See Color

Key to the brilliant realism of the Galaxy S10 line’s Dynamic AMOLED display is its evolved color representation. Compared to previous Galaxy phones, the Galaxy S10 line is the most exceptional yet; DisplayMate’s Just Noticeable Color Difference (JNCD) unit measurement for Galaxy S10 is 0.4 JNCD (where the lower the value, the more realistic a color rendering is), up from the Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy S9’s ratings at 0.5 and 0.7 JNCD respectively.

This near-perfect color rendering also takes into account global user color preferences. “We identified that people read color differently depending on where they are from, their age, and their gender,” explained Yang. “To accommodate this, we asked over 2,000 people in 15 countries all around the world to provide their color preferences. We then analyzed their responses and, given the results, created two default color modes. ‘Natural Mode’ has a warmer tone to suit people in the US and Europe, whereas ‘Vivid Mode’ accents bluish tones for users in Asia.”

A Display to Match the Human Eye

On top of being able to render over 16 million colors, the Galaxy S10 line’s Dynamic AMOLED Display also supports high definition, providing the user with optimized high picture quality for every image, and as the world’s first smartphone display to support HDR10+, for every frame of a video, as well. Much like how the pupils in our eyes dilate and contract depending on the amount of light around us, the Galaxy S10’s display features Dynamic Tone Mapping technology that adjusts and optimizes picture quality according to the light-dark contrast on the screen.

The display has also received a ‘100% Mobile Color Volume’ certification for its realistic image rendering – the first smartphone range to ever do so. In order to achieve such display prowess, not only has Samsung been tirelessly working on AMOLED organic material research, but also on its proprietary picture quality engine, ‘mDNIe (Mobile Digital Natural Image Engine)’.

So what is the future of device display, as envisaged by Yang? “In the past, we began with black and white displays – TV screens – and the natural next step was to develop displays that presented images in color, moving closer to how we, as humans, perceive the world. Accordingly, we are to take this verisimilitude to the next level by making a display that brings together technology to provide a picture quality that matches the realism and substantiality of human vision.”  

To learn more about the development process behind the new flagship line’s powerhouse battery, Samsung Newsroom sat down with developers who helped bring the battery to life – Hyeonsu Lee, Hongjung Son, Yusu Kim and Juhyang Lee – as well as Product Planner Jeongmin Moon.

Changing Charging for the Better

According to Product Planner Jeongmin Moon, the development team incorporated Wireless PowerShare technology into the Galaxy S10 line to offer users the freedom to go about their day without being tied down by cables and chargers.

“We wanted to solve the inconvenience of having to carry around multiple chargers and cables when you’re out and about, or having to interrupt your day to stop at places like cafes just to charge your phone,” said Moon. “So we came up with the idea to essentially make the Galaxy S10 a wireless charger in and of itself.”

Since the release of the Galaxy S6, the first Galaxy device to offer wireless charging, more and more smartphones and wearables have begun to feature the technology as well. This, Yusu Kim noted, is another reason why Samsung prioritized incorporating wireless battery-sharing technology into the Galaxy S10 line.

“Wireless PowerShare allows you to easily share your battery’s power anytime, anywhere,” said Kim. “And as more devices begin to support wireless charging, more people will be able to experience the convenience that the technology creates.”

The technology behind wireless battery sharing and wireless charging is quite similar. A wireless charger receives DC (direct current) charge and converts it to AC (alternating current) with the battery coil before transmitting it to the receiving smartphone. The phone will then convert the AC charge back to DC and save the energy in the battery. Each Galaxy S10 device features a circuit that enables this two-way conversion, which essentially allows the phones serve as wireless chargers as well.

As mentioned above, the list of Wireless PowerShare-compatible devices includes not only smartphones, but, in an industry first, wearables1 like Samsung’s Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Buds as well. As Juhyang Lee explained, the process of enabling the technology to work with such a wide range of devices was quite a difficult task.

“The sizes of these devices’ batteries are all different, so the most difficult part of the process was finding an optimal spot for the receiving coils that would result in maximum efficiency,” Lee explained. With the smartwatch, she recalled “the receiving coil was particularly small, so it took some time to find the most efficient approach. However, after months and months of extensive research, we produced a solution that meets our strict reliability standards.”

A Smarter Approach to Battery Management

Of course, in order to share its charge with another device, your Galaxy S10’s battery must possess enough power to efficiently operate your phone. (At least 30 percent, to be precise.) To offer users more freedom to utilize this useful function, the Galaxy S10 line features AI technology that optimizes battery usage based on how you use your phone.

When building this technology, the developers focused particularly on the battery consumption of infrequently used apps. As Hongjung Son explained, “Out of all the apps that users have on their phones, only a small number are used every day. And the ones that aren’t used consume battery power in the background.”

“To limit these apps’ background activities,” he continued, “we incorporated AI technology that organizes apps into different categories, such as ‘frequently used,’ ‘occasionally used,’ and ‘rarely used.’”

The team also enabled the new smartphones’ Adaptive Power Saving mode to activate automatically² based on users’ usage patterns. Hyeonsu Lee described how it works: “If, for example, a user usually uses their phone for 30 minutes on their way to work, Adaptive Power Saving mode will automatically activate if their commute happens to get extended.”

“And because this mode is AI-powered,” he added, “the more it’s used, the more accurate it becomes.”

The efficiency of the Galaxy S10’s battery has been amplified with stronger hardware. At 7.8mm thick, it’s thinner than the Galaxy S9’s 8.5mm battery, and its capacity has been increased by 10 percent (from 3000-3500mAh to 3400-4100mAh)³.

A Powerful Vision

Each member of the product planning and development teams agrees that Samsung’s latest battery innovations will unlock unprecedented user experiences.

Moon concluded the interview by shedding some light on the company’s ultimate goals for its charging technology. “With Wireless PowerShare, we not only expect to resolve some of the inconvenient aspects of charging your devices,” said Moon. “We also expect people to communicate and engage with one another more.”

“Listening carefully to users’ feedback has enabled us to consistently improve our Galaxy smartphones,” added Kim, “and it will continue to do so. Going forward, we’ll continue to strive to develop battery technology that offers the very best in terms of users’ convenience and experience.”

Samsung Electronics has officially launched the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+ and Galaxy S10e in markets around the world. The newest additions to the Galaxy family will be available in stores and online today, March 8, in approximately 70 countries, including the U.S., Canada, India, China and all of Europe, and will roll out to about 130 markets by the end of the month.

The Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+ and Galaxy S10e raise the bar in the categories that smartphone users care about most. After a comprehensive evaluation process, DisplayMate Technologies has deemed the Galaxy S10’s display “the most color accurate display that we have ever tested, [and] almost certainly considerably better than your existing smartphone, 4K UHD TV, tablet, laptop, and computer monitor.” Like the Galaxy Note9 and Galaxy S9 before it, the Galaxy S10 established or matched several smartphone display performance records during DisplayMate’s extensive tests, ultimately becoming the latest flagship Galaxy device to earn the firm’s highest-ever “Excellent A+” grade.

Compared to the Galaxy S9, the Galaxy S10 offers markedly better outdoor visibility, power consumption, color accuracy, and more.

Featuring a peak luminance of 1215 nits, the Galaxy S10’s display produces crisp, vibrant visuals when users need them – such as when they’re outside and under direct sunlight, or in environments with lots of ambient light. And with a relative power efficiency rating of 1.54 watts – an improvement on the Galaxy S9’s 1.70-watt rating – the Galaxy S10’s display is not only brighter than last year’s model, but also more energy efficient.

In addition to being the first mobile display to support HDR10+, a next-generation open standard for high dynamic range (HDR) video, the Galaxy S10’s display has been verified by DisplayMate to offer record-setting color accuracy. Its 0.4 Just Noticeable Color Difference (JNCD) rating in the DCI-P3 color range is a marked improvement over the Galaxy S9’s 0.7 JNCD score. This means that the Galaxy S10’s display can be counted on to deliver outstanding picture quality, with a level of color accuracy that is, according to DisplayMate’s report, “virtually indistinguishable from perfect.”

To help users protect their eyes from blue light, which studies suggest can affect our ability to get a good night’s rest, the Galaxy S10 features built-in technology that reduces blue light by up to 42 percent.¹ The display has also received a coveted ‘Eye Comfort’ certification from world-class German testing and certification body TÜV Rheinland for its record-low blue light output. Whereas conventional smartphone OLED panels’ visuals feature roughly 12 percent blue light, the Galaxy S10’s feature just seven percent – the lowest level in the business.

After detailing the display’s record-setting enhancements in his report, DisplayMate Technologies’ President, Dr. Raymond Soneira, noted that “What is particularly significant and impressive is that Samsung has been systematically improving OLED display performance with every Galaxy generation since 2010.”

The Galaxy S10 adds an exciting new chapter to that legacy, and underlines Samsung Electronics’ continued commitment to developing the most immersive displays on the market.

Simplify Your Routine

We all have our routines that help us manage our day, and time is, of course, precious. That’s why Samsung developed Bixby Routines – a clever feature that allows Bixby to learn your unique routines and recommend ways to save more time.

Bixby Routines utilizes machine learning to analyze your personal patterns and preferences based on how you use your phone. It uses that insight to suggest easily configurable routines – incorporating specific native apps, settings or features – that can instantly automate multiple tasks to make your life easier.

In addition to offering nine convenient preset options, Bixby Routines presents you with up to six personalized routines – based on how you use your phone at certain times and places – that minimize the steps required to get things done. For example, when you go to bed, your Galaxy S10 may run your personal “Before Bed” routine, which may include automatically turning on Night Mode, lowering the brightness, and muting sound. It’s as simple – and convenient – as that.

Instant Insight with Bixby Vision

Featuring a built-in AI that provides better image recognition and is capable of recognizing a wide range of objects, the camera’s enhanced Bixby Vision function places all-new AR capabilities at users’ fingertips.

Bixby Vision’s expanded Lens Mode features a variety of image-recognition options, including a new Wish List option. When you see a product you’re interested in buying, Wish List makes it easy to save it for later reference.¹

The new Apps Mode offers users more convenient ways to utilize AR in their everyday lives. Use it to, for instance, virtually try on a new pair of sunglasses or some new makeup, or see how your hair would look dyed, or how your living space would look if you added an appliance or piece of furniture that you’re interested in buying.²

Apps Mode also makes it easy to learn more about movies you’re interested in through its new Picture Play³ feature. When you see a poster for an upcoming release, simply show it to Bixby and it’ll instantly play the trailer.

Hands-Free Convenience

Galaxy device users are used to asking Bixby to help them search the web, make a reservation, or launch an app when their hands are full. Now, Bixby’s new Voice Unlock⁴ feature allows you to activate and interact with Bixby when your phone is locked for an even more comfortable user experience.

Bixby Voice Unlock creates a convenient way to utilize Bixby when your phone is out of reach. Say you’re in the middle of making dinner and you need to double check exactly how much of a particular ingredient the recipe calls for. With Bixby Voice Unlock, rather than smudging up your screen with sauce and bits of food, you can simply say “Hi Bixby” to unlock your phone, and then ask Bixby to pull up the recipe for you.

Make Bixby Your Own

To offer users more freedom to utilize Bixby’s handy button, the Galaxy S10 introduces Bixby Key Customization.⁵ Now, you can customize the button to launch Bixby with either a single or double press, and map the other option to launch your favorite app or Quick command. It’s just another convenient way to make Bixby your own.

Speaking of Quick commands, Bixby’s update also makes it easy to share customized Quick commands with your friends.

Quick commands make using Bixby even more convenient by allowing you to replace one or more commands with a simple word or phrase. The opportunities for personalization are endless, and your Quick commands can also be saved as shortcut icons on your phone’s home screen for easy access.⁶ This is especially useful in situations when you’d rather not speak out loud. So for example, when you’re heading into a theater, if you tap the icon for your “Movie Time” Quick command, Bixby will instantly switch your phone to silent mode, turn on “Do not disturb,” reduce brightness completely, and turn off the screen so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the film without interruptions.

And now, with the Galaxy S10, if you’ve crafted the perfect Quick command and you want to send it to someone else, you can simply tap “share” to instantly send it as a link via text message or messaging app.⁷

Held at San Francisco’s Bill Graham Civic Auditorium on February 20, Galaxy Unpacked 2019 saw the company unveil a total of five new flagship phones: the highly anticipated Galaxy Fold, which features a game-changing foldable form and Samsung’s largest-ever mobile display, as well as four Galaxy S10 models that allow users to choose the phone that’s best for them.

But that’s not all. The company also announced exciting partnerships that will enable Galaxy S10 users to capture and share moments in dynamic new ways, and revealed three new wearables – the Galaxy Buds, Galaxy Watch Active and Galaxy Fit – that will change how users enjoy their favorite music and keep track of their fitness.

After de Silva announces a partnership with Adobe to design a version of (video editing software) Premiere Rush specifically for Galaxy devices, Brazilian YouTube stars Leon Martins and Nilce Moretto demonstrate how the Galaxy S10’s camera and Adobe Premiere Rush CC for Samsung allow users to create incredible content on the go.

De Silva welcomes the Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri (center right), to the stage to discuss how the Galaxy S10 makes sharing photos faster, easier, and better than ever. He reveals that the Galaxy S10 includes a new Instagram Mode built into its camera that allows you to take a photo or video and immediately upload it to your Instagram feed. He also sums up the Galaxy S10 as “the best way to express yourself on Instagram,” and to demonstrate just how easy it is to use, he snaps and posts a quick selfie with his friend, DJ Koh (center left).

“From expansive storage to advanced speeds, the (Galaxy) S10 is like having a super computer in your pocket,” says Drew Blackard, Samsung Electronics America’s Senior Director of Product Marketing. As he explains, the Galaxy S10+ is available with up to 12GB of RAM and a terabyte of base storage, and the Galaxy S10’s new processor enables 29 percent faster CPU speeds and 37 percent faster GPU speeds. He also announces that the Galaxy S10 models will be the first mobile devices optimized to work seamlessly with Unity’s new, gaming engine-enhancing Adaptive Performance feature. The combination of premium performance specs and Adaptive Performance support will enable the Galaxy S10 to power next-level gaming experiences.

Blackard offers the crowd an up-close look at the Galaxy S10 line’s specs, and reveals that the smartphones will be available on March 8, and will also feature new, eco-friendly packaging.

Elina Vives, Samsung Electronics America’s Senior Director of Marketing, introduces Samsung’s new, cord-free Galaxy Buds. Featuring built-in Bixby support, easy controls, clear and smart sound, and a comfortable and compact form factor, the Galaxy Buds are an everyday, in-ear lifestyle companion. They’re designed to keep up with you all day – offering up to six hours of music and up to five hours of calls – and feature a compact case that delivers 1.7 hours of use after a quick 15-minute charge.

Vives explains how the new Galaxy Watch Active and Galaxy Fit combine exercise-tracking functions with innovations that can help users keep track of their overall wellness. These include heart rate monitors that check for irregular heartbeats, and continuous stress tracking – “to keep you calm when life gets overwhelming.”

Blackard returns to the stage to reveal the final member of the Galaxy S10 family: the Galaxy S10 5G. The first Galaxy phone to be compatible with 5G networks, the Galaxy S10 5G places the power of ultra-high speeds directly into users’ hands. It also features a powerful new 3D Depth Camera, as well as the largest screen and most powerful battery ever included in a Galaxy S device.

After discussing Samsung technologies that have helped accelerate the development of 5G commercial networks over the last ten years, DJ Koh hands the stage over to Hans Vestberg, CEO of Verizon, who reveals that his company will be the first carrier to launch the Galaxy S10 5G.

The Galaxy S10 introduces Samsung’s new, 19:9 Infinity-O Display, which maximizes screen space to offer users more room to do more, more comfortably. Bezels have been reduced to create more space for what matters most, like watching movies, reading books, and playing games. In fact, compared to the Galaxy S9, the ultra-slim top bezel has been decreased by more than three times.¹

When tested by the experts at DisplayMate, the Dynamic AMOLED display received a 0.4 Just Noticeable Color Difference (JNCD) score. An improvement on the Galaxy S9’s 0.7 JNCD rating, this score confirms the Galaxy S10’s exceptionally accurate color reproduction. In other words, the colors you see on Samsung’s new smartphones are a near-perfect match to colors in real life.

The company’s latest groundbreaking display is also the first smartphone display in the world to support HDR10+: a next-generation open standard for high dynamic range (HDR) video. HDR10+ support effectively delivers cinema-quality visuals to users’ pockets by enabling compatible content to be depicted precisely as the creators intended. This means that when streaming a favorite film, for instance, colors are more accurate, and the viewing experience is more immersive.

The display utilizes dynamic tone mapping technology to optimize colors from scene to scene, and to produce better contrast between light and dark scenes. It also optimizes brightness levels so that even the smallest details look beautiful, and produces true black colors³ for better shadow detail, even in low-light conditions.

The Galaxy S10’s bright, brilliant screen ensures that colors are crisp even under harsh sunlight. So when you’re out and about or lounging by the pool, the sun won’t stop you from catching up on a favorite show, or checking out that video clip your friend just sent.

Beefed-Up Biometric Security

Embedded beneath the Dynamic AMOLED display is Samsung’s new, in-display Ultrasonic Fingerprint Scanner,⁴ which offers vault-like security to keep your device safe.

The scanner works by emitting ultrasonic waves that map the unique pattern of your fingerprint by sensing the tiny air gaps between your finger and the screen. That wave data is then sent back to the scanner and analyzed by the phone’s main chipset in order to determine whether it’s a match.

It works in the blink of an eye, and features 3D anti-spoofing technology that applies a machine learning-based algorithm to the on-screen fingerprint to offer a high level of security. This ensures that your phone will only open once it’s registered your physical fingerprint, and not an image of it. Its security is backed by the world’s first FIDO Alliance Biometric Component certification, and it’s been tested to work in the most challenging of conditions, including in sub-zero temperatures and under bright sunlight.

Easy on the Eyes

Comfort is key when it comes to the Galaxy S10, which is why Samsung optimized its newest flagships with innovations that make these beautiful devices even easier on the eyes.

If you regularly check your phone before going to bed, you’re likely familiar with blue light emissions, which studies indicate can affect your sleep. The Dynamic AMOLED display has been certified by the experts at TÜV Rheinland to reduce blue light by a full 42 percent,⁵ which can help users protect their eyes. Each Galaxy S10’s rear camera setup also includes a 12MP Wide-angle, Dual Aperture, Super Speed Dual Pixel lens. It combines an f/1.5-aperture lens with an f/2.4, and automatically adjusts to light just like our eyes to help users snap professional-looking photos, day or night. When the camera recognizes specific scenes, it will also suggest other ways to potentially improve your photo. For example, if you’re taking a picture of a sunrise, the camera will automatically ask you if you’d like to switch to the Ultra Wide lens to ensure that you capture the scene in all its glory. If you’re taking a picture in extreme low-light conditions, it will propose that you take a Bright Night Shot for a professional-quality picture.

The camera also offers users instant, automatic recommendations on how to best frame their photo through its Shot Suggestion feature. Utilizing a database of over 100 million pictures, Shot Suggestion’s composition guide offers helpful tips to help you improve your photo’s proportions, positioning and overall composition.

The camera’s upgraded Live Focus mode allows you to customize your photos with artistic effects. The Galaxy S10+ utilizes its dual front cameras to support the feature, which includes options to add new spin bokeh, zoom bokeh, and color point effects, while the Galaxy S10 and S10e’s front-facing camera utilizes the NPU’s intelligence.
