How Does Sleep Apnea Impact Sleep?

The report found that 23% of study participants were at risk of sleep apnea.

“The microarousals and awakenings that follow breathing pauses fragment your sleep,” said behavioral sleep scientist Dr. Vanessa Hill. “Those occurrences can prevent the brain from staying in the rapid eye movement (REM) and deep sleep stages necessary for cognitive and physical restoration.”

The report showed these constant disruptions take a direct toll on sleep duration and quality, leading to:

• Reduced REM Sleep: Participants with moderate to severe sleep apnea indicators detected by Galaxy Watch got around four minutes less REM sleep, the phase where the brain processes emotions, consolidates memories and cements learning. Without enough of it, people can experience mood instability and memory problems, impacting performance at work and overall well-being.
• Less Deep Sleep: Sleep apnea also robs sufferers of deep sleep — approximately eight minutes less per night on average. This is the body’s critical physical restoration phase, where growth hormone is released, muscles are repaired and the immune system is activated. Losing deep sleep may leave people feeling physically exhausted, experiencing slower recovery times and getting sick more often.
• Frequent Nightly Awakenings: Participants with signs of sleep apnea also woke up more regularly during the night and stayed awake around four minutes longer. These interruptions derail the sleep cycle, locking people into lighter, less restorative stages and making next-day exhaustion inevitable, no matter how long they slept.
• Shorter Sleep Duration: Overall, people with a higher likelihood of sleep apnea averaged around 12 minutes less sleep. While this loss may seem minor, it can significantly impact sleep quality as sleep cycles become fragmented throughout the night.

Why It Matters: “Even a small loss in sleep duration is compounded by a larger loss of sleep quality,” said Dr. Hill. “This can be the difference between simply being ‘in bed’ and getting restorative rest, which could be why people feel so tired the next day.”

Dr. Hill also advocates a multidimensional approach to sleep health. “Sleep apnea affects many dimensions of sleep — duration, quality, sleep efficiency and even daytime fatigue,” she added. “Together, they help determine our health and functioning.”

Korea: Blood Oxygen Feature Assists in Mid-Flight Medical Emergency

On a flight from Las Vegas to Seoul, a passenger was found unconscious and unresponsive in his seat. Fortunately, Dr. Jongmo Seo, a medical professor at Seoul National University Hospital, was on board and able to help.

New Features Help Researchers With Their Studies

Samsung Health Research Stack promotes more efficient digital health research. Features include an app SDK for easy application creation, a back-end service that manages data collected by the app and a web portal to assist with research design and data analysis. The app SDK is a development tool that reduces the cost and time required to develop applications for digital health — and now supports the development of both mobile apps for research and smartwatch apps that utilize wearable sensor data. Notably, enhanced support for the Sensor SDK allows researchers to create watch apps that measure and utilize electrocardiogram, blood oxygen level and body composition data from the innovative Galaxy Watch¹ sensors. The new Data SDK integration helps researchers create applications that use sleep data from the Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Ring.

Moreover, performance and usability improvements have been made to the back-end service and web portal. The back-end architecture has been reinforced to handle data from large clinical trials with added features to manage studies. The web portal helps with the research process from patient recruitment and surveys to progress management and data analysis.

Samsung Electronics, together with the University of Michigan, today announced that the University of Michigan Human Performance & Sport Science Center (HPSSC) — renowned for its integrated and comprehensive sport, exercise, and human performance-related research and education — has validated the high accuracy of Samsung Galaxy Watch’s fitness tracking features.

HPSSC’s Michigan Performance Research Laboratory (MiPR) found a significant correlation between Galaxy Watch and the clinical and sport science reference devices’ measurement of heart rate, sweat loss, VO₂ max and body fat percentage measurements, validating the reliability of Galaxy Watch’s monitoring capabilities. This partnership demonstrates how the collaboration between the two organizations makes advanced and precise fitness solutions to more people.

The MiPR studies verified the accuracy of Galaxy Watch’s fitness tracking features by monitoring key metrics from elite runners, including:

• Heart rate: As the most commonly checked health metric during workouts, heart rate measures how hard the heart works during physical activity. Findings show an excellent 90% correlation with electrocardiogram equipment while running, the gold standard in heart rate measurement.
• Sweat loss: Sweat loss estimates the amount of fluid lost during physical activity and helps guide proper hydration after workouts. The study found a 95% correlation for Galaxy Watch in assessing sweat loss over varying distances ranging from 2.5 km to 20 km.
• VO₂ max: Understanding how much oxygen the body absorbs during a workout helps individuals assess their fitness levels and set optimal goals and limits. The study demonstrated an 82% correlation, indicating acceptable alignment between Galaxy Watch and clinical-grade diagnostic equipment.
• Body fat percentage: Measuring a person’s body fat percentage allows for a better understanding of physical health and fitness than tracking body weight alone. Galaxy Watch readings showed a 95% correlation with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) results, the standard diagnostic test for body composition using low-dose X-rays.

1. Sensor

The BioActive Sensor is a key component that measures health metrics such as heart rate and oxygen levels. For more accurate health monitoring, the Galaxy Watch Ultra has a sensor with 13 light-emitting diodes (LEDs) — nine more than its predecessor. The enhanced sensor precisely assesses health metrics whether users are on the move or working out at the gym.

2. Rear Deco

The rear deco sits against the wrist alongside the BioActive Sensor to enhance the sensor’s performance.

3. Front and Back Cases

The case consists of a front and a back — protecting the watch dial’s movements and surrounding the display. This is the part that most strongly expresses the individual character of a watch. The metal part of the case is made of titanium. Apart from being lighter and stronger than steel use stainless (SUS), the premium metal also adds a touch of class.

4. PBA, Printed Board Assembly

The printed board assembly (PBA) is responsible for the Galaxy Watch Ultra’s powerful performance. Equipped with a 3nm Processor for the first time within the Galaxy Watch lineup, the PBA uses a 3nm process and a big.LITTLE processing architecture. This design approach combines one large, powerful core with several smaller cores to increase the power efficiency of the CPU. The Galaxy Watch Ultra’s AP has one big core dedicated to high-performance processing and four little cores that share low-power processing tasks. As a result, the CPU runs three times faster than previous processors and offers a 30% improvement in power efficiency of the processor.

5. Display

The customizable display — now brighter with a peak brightness of 3,000 nits — showcases a variety of watch faces to express the user’s individual tastes and preferences. The Galaxy Watch Ultra’s screen is clearly visible even outdoors in bright sunlight.

6. Index Deco

The index deco is a circular bezel that surrounds the display. Made of lightweight titanium, the index deco’s sleek design was inspired by the indices found on traditional wristwatches.

7. Watch Band 

The watch band is designed for comfort and breathability with a wavelike design that resists sweat and moisture. The double-tongue buckle provides a secure fit, bringing greater peace of mind to active users who wear the Galaxy Watch Ultra while exercising. Not only is the watch band more comfortable, but it is also easier to attach and detach.

Two weeks ahead of the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony, Samsung Electronics unveiled the next frontier of Galaxy AI with Galaxy Unpacked 2024 on July 10 (local time) at the Carrousel du Louvre — located underground the historic Louvre Museum in Paris, France.

Bright lights circled the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe and Seine River before gathering at the Louvre in the introductory video that announced the start of Galaxy Unpacked 2024. Anticipation filled the air as the auditorium chairs vibrated from the powerful surround sound.

As highlighted in the video with K-pop group TOMORROW X TOGETHER, the Galaxy Z Flip6’s AI camera is a powerful medium for self-expression.

The audience was impressed by how ProVisual Engine detects, analyzes and optimizes subjects with AI, while FlexCam supports hands-free photography and videography for next-level filming.

Creativity and individuality have reached new heights with FlexWindow and Galaxy AI. Users can express themselves through personalized AI-generated wallpapers or Flipsuit Cases that interact with their phones for an added level of fun.

Interpreter shines on the Galaxy Z Flip6. Now, users can communicate in different languages by leveraging the main screen and cover screen to translate conversations in real time.

“The Galaxy Z Flip6 will be my third Z Flip phone. I have high expectations because the camera has improved so much,” said Ugnė Graželyte, an influencer from Lithuania (@ugnegraz) who has been using Galaxy products for four years. “I liked the design and colors of the Galaxy Ring too.”

Adam Safi, a Samsung Member from France who was filming with the new Galaxy S24 Ultra, has used Samsung devices for more than 10 years. “I’m looking forward to the new design of the Galaxy Buds3 as it will be more practical in controlling the device,” he said. “I heard the noise canceling function is excellent, so I’m excited to try the product.”

“Galaxy Unpacked 2024 had a wonderful atmosphere. The Galaxy Ring was more innovative than any other product,” said Petros Kypraios, Editor-in-Chief of Greek tech publication SmartPress. “The camera function and battery performance of the Galaxy Z Flip6 are amazing. Users want devices that last a long time on a single charge, and Samsung has mastered this.”

Galaxy AI’s creative features attracted the attention of attendees at the experience center. “I love drawing. Thinking Outside the Box: Opening a New Era of Smartwatch

Unveiled in September 2013, the revolutionary Galaxy Gear brought the Galaxy experience closer to everyday life. The wearable featured a 41.4-millimeter display that allowed users to make and receive calls, schedule events, set alarms and check the weather with their voice. Photos and short videos could be captured in the moment without smartphones, thanks to the 1.9-megapixel camera attached to the strap and the ingenious Memographer feature. More than a wristwatch, the Galaxy Gear set the stage for a new era of smartwatches.

Samsung launched the second-generation Samsung Gear2 in February 2014. Lighter and thinner than its predecessor, this device was equipped with a longer-lasting battery and packed with more features that could be used without a smartphone. Users could monitor their heart rate and track their exercise in real time with the heart rate sensor or turn the watch into a standalone music player with the embedded file storage. The Samsung Gear2 Neo was introduced at the same time, offering consumers an additional option with all the same features of the Samsung Gear2 except the camera.

Released in 2014, the Samsung Gear S was Samsung’s first smartwatch to feature a large, curved Super AMOLED display that wrapped around the user’s wrist — supporting 3G and Wi-Fi without a smartphone connection. This rebrand reflected the diverse and ever-expanding functions of a smartwatch in today’s world — as a health tracker, personal assistant, fashion accessory and much more. To enhance the user experience and highlight Samsung’s smartwatch identity, the wearable maintained the signature circular bezel from previous models but added an hourly alarm and ticking sound of the second hand for the first time. Available in three colors and 42- and 46-millimeter sizes, this versatile device offered stress management and sleep management features to enhance users’ health and wellness. Users could keep track of workouts from 39 different kinds of exercises as well, more than any other watch on the market at the time.

Samsung launched a new lineup of smartwatches in February 2019 with the Galaxy Watch Active, specifically designed for users with active lifestyles. Boasting a 28.1-millimeter Super AMOLED display, this watch retained the signature circular shape but eliminated the bezel and used aluminum to decrease the weight by 25 grams. The 20-millimeter watchband made of flexible fluoroelastomer offered fashion-conscious users a variety of options to express their individuality. On the other hand, health-conscious users could track their exercise, sleep, stress levels and blood pressure in real time — they could even check how long they spent in rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep versus the other three sleep stages.

In August 2019, the Galaxy Watch Active2 took personalized health and wellness management to the next level for people seeking healthier lifestyles. Apart from the rotating bezel and other user experience enhancements, the My Style feature provided more stylish, customized watch faces to users. The wearable was the perfect partner in helping users adopt healthier and more balanced lifestyles through the upgraded stress and sleep management functions as well as the exercise feature that could track more than 39 different types of workouts. Moreover, the upgraded Galaxy ecosystem improved connectivity and everyday convenience.

A New Era: Integrated Healthcare Is Here

After two years, Samsung brought health seekers the Galaxy Watch3 in August 2020. Maintaining the circular bezel made of stainless steel, users could choose from a larger 41- or 45-millimeter display with a lighter, thinner body. For the first time in Galaxy history, Samsung added an even lighter, stronger and more premium model made of titanium. The device provided an integrated healthcare experience from the wrist with health, fitness, sleep management and blood pressure monitoring. In addition, Samsung introduced electrocardiogram (ECG) readings and a blood oxygen feature to track oxygen saturation over time.

The Galaxy Watch4 series redefined the smartwatch experience in August 2021 — with two models, the modern and minimalistic Galaxy Watch4 and the more traditional Galaxy Watch4 Classic featuring the signature rotating bezel. Launched for the first time, the BioActive Sensor measured various health indicators such as blood pressure, ECG and blood oxygen saturation levels more accurately than the previous watch. Users wanting more holistic health insights could measure their body composition by simply placing two fingers on the smartwatch to learn how to manage and achieve their health goals. The wearable was equipped with the new Wear OS, developed jointly with Google, so that users could access a larger variety of applications. Meanwhile, the new One UI Watch update significantly enhanced the user experience by seamlessly connecting the watch with Samsung smartphones, wireless earbuds and other devices.

Above Wrist: A Partner To Better Know Yourself

In August 2022, Samsung opened the next chapter of smartwatches with the Galaxy Watch5 series. Optimal for outdoor sports, the Galaxy Watch5 Pro was newly introduced in this lineup. The more advanced Samsung BioActive Sensor improved the accuracy of body composition, heart rate and ECG monitoring measurements. Notably, a newly equipped temperature sensor on the Galaxy Watch5 provided skin temperature-based predictions to help women conveniently track their menstrual cycles.

Samsung once again stood by its health-seeking users with the Galaxy Watch6 series, unveiled in July 2023. This wearable offers holistic health features to provide more personalized, innovative health solutions to users who want to better manage their health. Complete with a slimmer bezel, the display is about 20% larger than its predecessors to help users see more information at a glance. Galaxy Watch6 is designed with the signature circular design, whereas the Galaxy Watch6 Classic features a rotating bezel reminiscent of analog watches. A new button replaced the spring-bar structure, allowing users to easily switch their watchbands with one click.

With an even more sensitive BioActive sensor and a high-performance processor, health metrics became more specialized — ranging from sleep management and fitness coaching to heart health monitoring.

An AI-Based Galaxy Health Experience and the Next-Generation Watch

Samsung unveiled One UI 6 Watch in May 2024. With this, the company has successfully transformed the Galaxy Watch into a total digital healthcare assistant that measures indicators such as heart rate, sleep patterns and more. Health insights are more comprehensive and detailed than ever before, and users now receive personalized messages powered by AI to motivate them to reach their health goals. Introducing Samsung’s New BioActive Sensor

The all-new BioActive Sensor is essential to bringing you better preventative health experiences on the next Galaxy Watch, with design improvements that enable even more precise health insights. Samsung engineers focused on three upgrades to the new sensor: enhancing the performance of light-receiving photodiodes, adding additional colors of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and arranging them optimally across the sensor.

Samsung more than doubled the performance of each photodiode, successfully decreasing the number needed to maintain capacity from eight to four. This redesign freed up additional space for the integration of a larger number and variety of LEDs and ensured their optimal placement across the sensor. The new sensor now includes Blue, Yellow, Violet and Ultraviolet LEDs in addition to an increased number of Green, Red and Infrared LEDs. With the integration and arrangement of these LEDs, photodiodes and specially designed photodiode, Samsung is taking innovation one step further and is now able to pursue unexplored aspects of health monitoring on wearables.

Bringing Greater Accuracy and New Possibilities for Preventative Wellness

The optimal allocation of Green, Red and Infrared LEDs sets new standards in wearable technology by improving accuracy and enabling exceptional performance across a broad array of health metrics. This allows the new BioActive Sensor to more accurately measure health metrics such as heart rate, sleep quality, blood pressure,² blood oxygen levels and stress levels.³ Even the measurement of heart rate during intensive workouts is 30% more accurate compared to its predecessor.

The more diverse colors of LEDs and newly designed photodiodes unlock new possibilities and empower you to better predict trends and take proactive steps for preventative care. The first of these features will be an advanced glycation end products (AGEs) index⁴ — an indicator of metabolic health and biological aging strongly influenced by overall lifestyle and dietary habits. Used as an insightful biomarker, this index provides a snapshot of your biological age to help you make more informed decisions about your wellness journey and work towards a healthier future. The addition of an AGEs index is just one of the many new advanced features planned for the next Galaxy Watch.

To develop the Energy Score feature, Samsung Research² collaborated with Professor Patrick O’Connor from the Mary Frances Early College of Education’s Department of Kinesiology at the University of Georgia, USA.

Samsung Newsroom explored the new Energy Score — designed to enhance the digital healthcare experience.

Energy is closely related to everyday efficiency and fatigue, and based on imperfectly understood neural circuit activity in the brain. As a result, objectively quantifying energy is not easy. Samsung Research and Professor O’Connor’s team joined forces to define and calculate an individual’s energy based on the available science.

A leading expert in exercise psychology, Professor O’Connor has extensively studied the effects of sleep, physical activity and caffeine intake on cognition and feelings of energy. He advised on the development of the Energy Score feature on Samsung Health, combining physical activity with neuroscience data and theory to suggest the concept of “Overall Capacity.”

While most existing services focus solely on physical aspects when measuring energy, Overall Capacity considers both physical and cognitive factors. Mental stressors can affect energy levels, as evidenced by disrupted sleep patterns and increased fatigue when stressed.

Essentially, energy reflects the amount of activity one can sustain relative to their total capacity. Exceeding one’s usual physical or mental load reduces energy in the short term. For example, if someone typically exercises at a low intensity for 30 minutes daily — but decides to engage in moderate-intensity exercise for an hour one day — their Energy Score is expected to drop the following day.

Regular exercise can improve Overall Capacity, potentially resulting in a higher Energy Score for the same workout intensity over time.

Energy Score is calculated based on physical activity levels, sleep quality, heart rate during sleep and heart rate variability during sleep as measured by wearable devices. Samsung Research developed the Energy Score feature based on scientific studies and clinical research that studied the correlation between these indicators and cognitive, self-reported and physical markers of energy.

“Activity” can influence physical capacity. One can predict their energy for the day by comparing workout data from the previous day against their typical activity levels. This method employs the Acute:Chronic Workload Ratio concept that anticipates fatigue by assessing both long-term and short-term workload.

“Sleep” is primarily associated with mental capacity. Sleep patterns like average sleep duration over seven days, consistency of sleep and wake times and how quickly one falls asleep are analyzed and integrated into one’s Energy Score. This method follows the “energy reservoir” model — which explores the connections between sleep, fatigue and cognitive function, to calculate fluctuations in energy based on sleep duration and circadian rhythms.

“Sleeping Heart Rate” and “Sleeping Heart Rate Variability” are linked to both physical and mental capacities. Energy is forecast by comparing recent measurements to past long-term data trends. Predictions are more accurate when heart rate during sleep and heart rate variability during sleep data are both analyzed during a stable state of sleep.

Samsung Research took age and gender into account in determining how much weight each factor should have on one’s Energy Score. Furthermore, Professor O’Connor’s research team conducted experiments involving cognitive tests and self-reports of energy and fatigue symptoms, finding a significant correlation between the Energy Score generated by Samsung’s models and clinical data collected by the University of Georgia’s researchers.

Samsung Health’s Energy Score goes beyond simple numerical values. The figure offers health guidance and suggestions based on seven key factors affecting the score including average sleep duration and physical activity from the previous day.

To achieve this, Samsung Research combined its energy score model with optimization AI and generative AI technologies. Optimization AI first pinpoints key influences on the score and analyzes current energy levels along with recent lifestyle changes to suggest potential improvements. On-device generative AI then crafts these insights into friendly messages while upholding user privacy.

The health guidance provided gives users an understanding of their current Energy Score and science-based suggestions to manage appropriate levels of activity and rest for the day. By paying more attention to the factors that affect their daily Energy Score, users can go on to improve their lifestyle habits.

Professor O’Connor conducted extensive research in collaboration with Samsung developers, striving to enhance the reliability and validity of the Energy Score.

“From a scientific perspective, the Energy Score reflects predicted variation in the ability to perform brief cognitive tests of attention across the day based on objective information obtained from smart device sensors during the past week,” he explained.

“Through our collaboration with Professor O’Connor, we were able to address this challenge in a scientifically meaningful way,” said Yunsu Lee, Head of the Data Intelligence Team at Samsung Research. “We will continue to develop data and AI technologies to ensure that Samsung’s various devices are used more widely to enhance users’ lives.”

The new 360 Audio Recording feature¹ empowers users to capture sound on video precisely as they hear it. Pairing Galaxy Buds2 Pro with a Galaxy smartphone, everyone can film like a pro and capture high-quality, realistic audio for video without the need for bulky professional equipment anytime, anywhere. The feature picks up 360-degree sound using a microphone in each earbud, placing viewers at the center of a roaring festival crowd or beside a bubbling brook in the middle of a forest. 360 Audio Recording is the first feature in the Galaxy line leveraging LE Audio, an advanced new Bluetooth audio standard. Sleep is a reset for the mind and body. A good night’s sleep strengthens both physical and cognitive health and helps people better perform tasks that require long periods of concentration. Being well rested can, for example, help people work more productively, drive more safely and think more clearly.

Given the impact that the pandemic had on our daily habits, it is worth exploring how our sleep may have changed as a result.

Let’s take a closer look at how sleep duration and efficiency changed across the globe since the start of the pandemic through the sleep patterns of global Samsung Health users.

Sleep Duration Versus Efficiency: Why It Matters

When it comes to sleep, longer duration does not necessarily mean better quality. For the purpose of this analysis, duration refers to the amount of time in bed trying to sleep, while sleep efficiency measures the percentage of time in bed that we actually spend sleeping.

While changes in lifestyle habits during the pandemic saw individuals globally sleeping longer, there seems to be no correlation between sleep duration and sleep efficiency.

In fact, despite people in all countries enjoying longer sleep times on average than before the pandemic, we actually experienced an overall decrease in sleep efficiency.

What’s more, the results varied by sex. While both males and females are resting more than they were prior to the pandemic, males are not only seeing a longer increase in sleep duration, they are also seeing a larger decrease in sleep efficiency compared to females.

Age is another factor providing interesting insights. While all age groups slept longer, sleep efficiency in fact decreased as age increased. The exception here is people between the ages of 20 and 39, who actually experienced a jump in sleep efficiency. Furthermore, this age group was the only one showing a significant increase in both duration and efficiency.

How the Pandemic Changed Regional Sleep Habits

We also undertook a deep dive into the 16 countries where individuals use Samsung Health the most to see how sleep habit trends varied by region. While all 16 countries saw an increase in sleep duration — with people, on average, waking up later than they used to — the effect on sleep efficiency was mixed.

Region-specific changes in global sleeping habits can be seen as follows:

• While sleep duration remained the longest — both pre- and post-pandemic — in France, the country’s sleep efficiency decreased.
• Users in Korea recorded one of the biggest increases in sleep duration and efficiency during the pandemic but still remained under the global average.
• The U.S. saw the biggest dip in sleep efficiency out of all the regions measured.
• While Germany saw the highest global sleep efficiency scores before the pandemic, it has since witnessed one of the most significant decreases in sleep efficiency.
• Argentina recorded the highest sleep efficiency following the start of the pandemic.
• While Indonesia was the region with the lowest sleep efficiency before the pandemic, this distinction now belongs to Vietnam. Furthermore, out of the 16 countries studied, Indonesia saw the highest increase in sleep efficiency from pre- to post-pandemic levels.
• Indonesia also saw a wake-up time delay of 11 minutes on average following the start of the pandemic. It was and remains the region recording the earliest wake-up times.
• Mexico is the region that has seen the biggest change in wake-up and sleep times. Going-to-bed time changed by 11 minutes on average, and wake-up time was delayed by 17 minutes.

How You Can Improve the Quality of Your Sleep

It is often said that healthy sleep for the average adult is 8 hours a night.¹ However, as the results show, sleep quality may also be an important factor to consider. Sleep tracking is one way we can better understand our sleep patterns to ensure that we are getting a better night’s sleep.

Many Galaxy customers take advantage of this, with 50% of Galaxy Watch users keeping track of their sleep at least once a week. Of those, 40% do so more than three times a week.² In order to manage your sleep better, take a look at these tips for using the Galaxy Watch series³ and consider adopting some to ensure each night of sleep is as restful as possible.

• Keep track of your sleep patterns: Sleep Score provides you with detailed data on when you enter deep sleep, REM sleep, and how your sleep and wake-up times vary.
• Understand your sleep quality better: With Blood Oxygen monitoring and Snore Detection, you can learn more about your sleep patterns as well as your overall health.
• Try a sleep training program: With Sleep Coaching, receive a tailored sleep guide program based on your actual habits, represented by one of eight dedicated sleep symbol animals, in order to help you understand and improve your sleep.
• Set up an ideal sleep environment: Given that where you sleep is just as important as how, consider adding an auto-setting on the temperature and light controls in your home to ensure the environment is ideal for rest.

The software updates will start with the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3 beginning on September 5 and roll out gradually to global countries. Continuous Software Support for Galaxy Watch3 and Galaxy Watch Active2

In addition, beginning from the end of September, a new software update will enable Galaxy Watch3 and Galaxy Watch Active2 users also to enjoy some of the new features of Galaxy Watch5 series. It includes two new watch faces — Gradient number and Pro analog — to help users express their tastes and styles better, and snore detection to provide more analysis of last night’s sleep quality.

This helps users deepen their understanding, encourages action and strengthens good habits to help them achieve their goals.

Our sensor provides insights across all aspects of health, but we’d like to highlight two key areas: sleep and body composition. Sleep is often an afterthought when establishing a solid wellness routine, but it is essential for holistic health. At Samsung, we’re serious about helping our community get better sleep. We’ve introduced various sleep quality tracking tools and launched a tailored sleep coaching program all aimed to help users get a more restful night’s sleep.

When it comes to fitness, in particular, everyone’s goals are different. That’s why BioActive Sensor also measures body composition, which deepens users’ knowledge of their physical health, far beyond merely losing weight. The sensor sends microcurrents to measure weight maintained, skeletal muscle gained, body fat lost and body water levels, relative to goals set, helping users hit targets and keep track of what matters to them.

All health data is encrypted and secured on the device itself and guarded by Knox, ensuring users’ information remains isolated from unauthorized sources.

We are also providing tools that allow consumers to track overall health and wellness — whether they’re at home, in the gym, or on the road. The Samsung Health app, with more than 200 million active global users, is at the center of Samsung’s health experience across an extensive range of devices, from smartwatches to smartphones to tablets and even TVs. The app — a holistic health hub that consolidates fitness, wellness and health monitoring capabilities — records and compiles all kinds of health data and activity information, presents them intuitively and gives guidance on how to leverage that data to maximize results. The collected information is comprehensive, easy-to-understand and encourages positive action.

More connected devices mean a more seamless and enhanced user experience. While following guided workout or meditation programs on Samsung Smart TVs or Galaxy Tabs at home, for example, your calorie count and heart rate are tracked on your Galaxy Watch but viewed on the larger screen for easier access. Your Galaxy Watch also recognizes when you fall asleep and automatically dims lights and turns off air conditioners in response.

Open Collaboration Means Better Health Experiences

To give our users the best experience possible, we partner with other leaders in technology and wellness. We have built a strong foundation with our technology, and we welcome collaboration on our open ecosystem — one that often serves as an incubator for exciting new applications, services and features. In collaboration with Google, we co-developed Wear OS and Health Connect so that more users can join the unified platform and take advantage of new services and solutions to meet everyone’s needs.

Samsung works extensively with third-party experts, research centers and universities to further advance wearable tracking and insight capabilities, including the National Sleep Foundation for sleep, the University of California San Diego Sleep Laboratory and the University of California, San Francisco Hypoxia Research Laboratory for sleep and blood oxygen research and Louisiana State University, Pennington Biomedical Research Center and the University of Hawaii Cancer Center for BIA research, to name a few. We’re also committed to researching new ways our health solutions can be used in the medical field. In the coming months, we’re focused on developing more tools and resources that will support the medical community and give our users a more holistic view of their health records.

Health technology has prioritized constant exercise, breaking personal records and meeting daily physical goals. Over the past few years, we’ve seen a distinct cultural shift in how users approach health — people are redefining the norms in this space and are approaching health with a more holistic mindset. We’re thrilled that Samsung and Google are working together to fulfill this need with a new solution, Health Connect. Just announced at Google I/O, developers now have access to a single set of APIs that enable the creation of fitness and health experiences. With the new Health Connect API, users will have a comprehensive set of controls to manage their health and fitness data across apps.

Health Connect supports more than 50 data types, such as exercise and sleep, as well as your vitals, such as heart rate and blood pressure. To ensure users have complete control of their data, Health Connect provides centralized privacy controls making it easy to give permission to the apps they want to share their on-device data.

And this isn’t just a proof of concept. We’re working alongside Google and other partners to realize the full benefits and potential of Health Connect. I’m excited to confirm that Samsung Health will also adopt Health Connect later this year. With users’ permission, this will enable app developers to take advantage of accurate and optimized data measured on Galaxy Watch for Samsung Health and use it in their apps as well.

We can’t wait to see how developers use Health Connect to bring tangible, holistic health benefits to Galaxy users. This new service is a massive step toward empowering users to experience the advantages of holistic living.

It’s been a busy year for us on the Samsung Health R&D team, but finally getting to share what we’ve been working on is one of my favorite parts of my job. Just one year ago at Google I/O, I had the privilege to be a part of the announcement of the new unified platform of Wear OS, bringing the best of Google together with Samsung Electronics’ wearable software and hardware expertise. This was the cumulation of the long-standing partnership between Samsung and Google.

The release of Wear OS Powered by Samsung on the Galaxy Watch4 series was a momentous step for both companies and one that could only be accomplished through a truly collaborative partnership driven by our shared goals. When we merged our very own Tizen-based software platform with Google’s operating system, we knew that we could bring immense improvements to the overall user experience via Wear OS. It was — and still is — enabling various features like the Watch Face Studio, which helps both users and designers easily and intuitively create their own watch faces.

We’re bringing the best of our partnership forward, and together, we’re striving to create innovative experiences for Samsung Galaxy users. As such, Wear OS truly exemplifies the value of our collaboration. In fact, I think we can officially call Wear OS an undeniable success, as there are now more than three times as many active Wear OS devices as there were last year. We see this growth in our wearables as just the beginning of even greater things to come.

A Unified Platform, Centered on You

As a leader in the wearables market, Samsung understands the importance of unifying its wearable user experience with the wider Android community. As we develop these experiences, we listen to our users to make the improvements and upgrades that will support their day-to-day lives. The creation of Wear OS allowed Android developers to easily port code from their smartphone applications to create Wear OS apps. When Galaxy users download the Wear OS-compatible app from the Google Play Store, they can choose to automatically install the same app on their Galaxy Watch as well.

Samsung Galaxy users were the first to receive the latest features and benefits of the partnership and platform, culminating in our most significant wearable release to date — the Galaxy Watch4 series. It’s our job to make sure our customers not only enjoy the Galaxy experience but also feel empowered to make the changes that improve their health and overall wellness. Health Connect, announced today, is the result of our ongoing effort to deliver holistic health solutions for our users.

Expanding the Android Ecosystem

As we celebrate one year of collaboration and success, we’re opening up the ecosystem even further by bringing new experiences and benefits to Galaxy Watch4 users. This summer, I’m excited to share that Galaxy Watch4 users will be able to download Google Assistant to their devices, featuring faster and more natural voice interactions, enabling quick answers and on-the-go help.

We’re bringing enhanced functionality to our third-party partners, too. Soon, our users can control Spotify with Google Assistant and change songs on the fly using only their voice. But we’re not stopping there. Later this year, even more of Google apps and services will be optimized for Galaxy Watches, once again delivering the most comprehensive and seamless wearable device experience with Android smartphones.

We’ve just scratched the surface of the potential of our partnership with Google and what’s to come for our users. Galaxy Watch series devices are already loved by Android smartphone users thanks to our signature designs, rich watch-face ecosystem, and holistic health platform. In today’s busy world, it’s easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of our lives. We understand the benefits of prioritizing sleep, but the to-do list is never-ending and can cause our stress levels to go up.

This has been highlighted in a recent study from one of the world’s leading sleep organizations, the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), finding that during the pandemic, more people in the US have been sleeping longer, but the quality of that sleep has suffered.

In fact, the NSF believes one of the biggest challenges facing the public is the need to keep prioritizing sleep for our health and well-being. Embracing the continuously growing category of sleep technology can help. From smart environmental controls to smart sleep tracking, cutting-edge and evolving technologies are reinventing and improving the sleep experience for the public. Sleep technology is coming to the industry forefront as consumer brands — like Samsung — are prioritizing sleep-related capabilities within their products.

Managing Routines and Tracking Progress

According to the NSF’s 2022 Sleep in America^® Poll, there’s significant opportunity to improve daily activities that are associated with positive sleep and health outcomes. Eating your meals at a consistent time, the amount of physical activity completed in the day, and even the level of light exposure during the day and around bedtime, all impact sleep health and are manageable.

The NSF has specific guidelines and recommendations for positive sleep health, and this, Lopos said, is where “technology can be a thread that runs through our sleep experience. It helps us as a reminder, a facilitator, a communicator and a tracker, and can play a role in helping meet the NSF’s recommendations for better sleep — both while awake and asleep.”

Controlling Your Sleep Environment

The right kind of light exposure during the day and night can make the difference between a good night’s sleep and a restless night. With nearly 60 percent of Americans saying they look at screens very often or somewhat often in the hour before bed or while in bed before sleep, it’s no wonder sleep quality is on the decline as light from phone, laptop and TV screens can significantly impact sleep.

And while technology can be the culprit when used inappropriately, like viewing screens too close to bedtime, it can also be part of the solution. “As people prepare for sleep, technology can help establish a sleep-friendly environment, help with a wind-down process that makes people feel more calm and relaxed, and then — and this is important — take its place in the background without disrupting a person’s sleep,” noted Lopos. A good example of this is the SmartThings functionality¹ which allows users to program a pre-set time to turn off the bedroom TV and turn down the lights as part of a bedtime routine to help prepare them to sleep and create better sleeping conditions throughout the night.

Adjusting Sleep Patterns

While sleep technology can play a meaningful role and help with long term health benefits, it can also help users adjust sleep patterns in the near term. Whether “springing forward” or “falling back”, Daylight Saving Time can have a significant impact on sleep. To help prepare, the NSF provides a number of tips including prioritizing natural daylight exposure, adjusting your clocks the night before the time change, and in the week leading up to a clock change, going to bed a little earlier each night to adjust your sleep schedule. The NSF also encourages the practice of relaxation techniques to help get a good night’s sleep every day, including during a time change disruption. The Galaxy Watch4 and the Samsung Health app can help with this by empowering users to manage their mindfulness through its breathing, meditation and stress monitoring capabilities.²

Better Sleep Today and Tomorrow From Samsung

It’s with this understanding of the power of sleep technology that Samsung has introduced features on the Galaxy Watch4 that are empowering users to track and meet wellness goals and help users work toward a better night’s sleep.

For example, the new sleep coaching program on the Galaxy Watch4 helps users achieve better sleep habits and achieve their sleep goals.² The Samsung program assigns one of eight sleep symbol animals representing the user’s sleep type after tracking sleep patterns over seven days and completing two related sleep surveys. Then, it guides users through a four-to-five-week coaching program that includes missions, checklists, guidance and reports to support users as they work towards improving their sleep health.

With wearable devices now a regular part of many people’s lifestyles today, tracking and understanding elements of sleep are more common than ever — and the NSF wants to see even more access to sleep technology, believing that the sleep technology industry is going to ride new waves of collaboration and knowledge sharing. “We’re going to see even more integration across wearable and connected devices, lifestyle and wellness platforms and home goods,” Lopos affirmed. “People’s choices and feedback will confirm there’s lots of room for products and services that use sleep technology.”

Galaxy Watch4 users will now have even more ways to customize their look with upgraded watch faces, and a new line of stylish straps.

Motivation To Move                                                                                                                  

The latest body composition update gives users even more insight into their health progress. Samsung Health will also be providing body composition insights powered by Centr,² a digital fitness program curated by Chris Hemsworth, to help users transform their health, fitness and mindset. In addition, Galaxy Watch4 users will receive a 30-day trial³ for full and unrestricted access to Centr. 

Whether you’re just looking to get active or training for an upcoming race, Samsung’s new interval target feature for runners and cyclists lets them pre-set the duration, distance and number of sets for their workout. From there, Galaxy Watch4 guides them through a custom intensity training session with a series of high-intensity workouts interspersed with low-intensity workouts, making for an impactful and targeted workout every time.

We are continuing our collaboration with top-ranked apps⁴ like adidas Running and Strava to help users power through their exercise.

Work Towards a Better Night’s Sleep

Building on Galaxy Watch4’s robust sleep tracking capabilities, the new sleep coaching program helps users develop better sleep habits. By tracking sleep patterns over seven days and completing two related sleep surveys, the program assigns one of eight sleep symbol animals representing the user’s sleep type. Then, it will guide users through a four to five week coaching program that includes missions, checklists, sleep-related articles, meditation guidance and regular reports to support users as they work towards improving their sleep quality.

When it comes to waking up refreshed, a peaceful and quiet environment is key to achieving a healthy rest as well. Galaxy Watch4 recognizes when users fall asleep and automatically turns off Samsung SmartThings enabled lights to help create better sleeping conditions.⁵

Deeper Insights for a Healthier Heart

Combined with the advanced BioActive Sensor technology and Samsung Health Monitor app,⁶ Galaxy Watch4 measures both blood pressure⁷ (BP) and electrocardiogram⁸ (ECG), allowing users to monitor their heart health anytime and from anywhere. Since the first introduction in 2020, Samsung Health Monitor app is currently available in 43 markets globally, expanding to 11 more in March, including Canada, Vietnam and South Africa.

Greater Selection of Matching Straps and Watch Faces

The new Galaxy Watch4 update makes the wearable experience even better, from the inside out. Users can further customize their watch face with additional colors and digital clock fonts that make the watch truly their own. Also, new strap colors⁹ such as burgundy and cream, and the new fabric band and link bracelet will be available for a more personalized look.

Committed to Expanding Compatibility Within the Android Ecosystem

In 2021, Samsung and Google introduced co-developed Wear OS Powered by Samsung, bringing smoother connections across Android devices and seamless access to more apps via Google Play including Google Maps, Google Pay and YouTube Music. Coming soon through an additional update, users will be able to stream music over Wi-Fi or LTE from the YouTube Music app on their Galaxy Watch4. This means that users can leave their phone behind and still enjoy their favorite artists as they work out on-the-go.

Additionally, Google Assistant will be available on Galaxy Watch4 series in the coming months. With access to both Bixby and Google Assistant, consumers will be equipped with advanced voice assistant functionality to meet their various needs.

Users can also now install their favorite smartphone apps¹⁰ on their Galaxy Watch4 during initial setup with one tap, creating a seamless experience across devices right out of the box.

This makes it easier to keep both yourself and your more vulnerable loved ones safe.²

Work Out With Friends Using Updated Group Challenge

Group Challenge enables you to work out with friends no matter how far apart you are – helping you stay motivated and connected by working out together. With the new update, you can now add your friends or family members to a Challenge, battling it out to see who can go the furthest or the fastest, either working as a team or competing against each other individually. Keep track of your own place in the competition or see how you’re performing as a team – all from your wrist.

Get a More Holistic Insight Into Your Health

The Galaxy Watch series has introduced a vast suite of advanced health features – from heart rate tracking and blood oxygen measurement to sleep and stress management.³ Plus, with ground-breaking Blood Pressure (BP)⁴ and Electrocardiogram (ECG)⁵ monitoring in select markets, Galaxy Watch users can benefit from accurate health monitoring and gain deeper insights into their overall health through the Samsung Health Monitor app.

Voice Recognition With Bixby: More Convenient Than Touch

Artificial intelligence (AI) enhances the performance of all kinds of devices essential to our daily lives, including smartphones, tablets, TVs and more. In particular, AI-powered voice recognition facilitates more seamless interactions between these devices. Principal Engineer Joohwan Kim from the AI ​​Client Development Group, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics, shares below how the Bixby voice assistant platform is set to enable more convenient experiences – using just your voice.

Q: What does the newly updated Bixby voice assistant platform look like?

Bixby aims to be the best voice interface able to control multiple Samsung devices using only a small amount of data. From this standpoint, we focused on providing a unique user experience that only Galaxy can provide when developing Samsung’s latest devices. For example, Galaxy Z Flip3 provides a Bixby function that allows users to utilize the Cover Screen, and Galaxy Watch4 series includes hands-free functionality.

Bixby has advanced in many ways as an AI platform, and, in terms of the engine, it supports Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) on-device. Because it processes users’ voices immediately from within the device itself, it is fast and secure in terms of privacy protection. Moreover, the development of Bixby Home Platform further expands the range of supported devices. What used to require multiple voice commands is now possible with only a single command that the device understands and performs accordingly.

Q: What are the areas of possible collaboration with developers around the world for the Bixby Platform?

There are several ways third-party developers can participate in Bixby. They can develop various voice services using Samsung’s AI engine in our smartphones, watches and Family Hub. This service, called a capsule, is provided by the Bixby Developer Center. We have also updated the developer tools to make debugging and natural language learning easier, and to allow convenient use of various UI components, all of which will be presented at SDC21.

The update being announced will make it possible to use for developers to harness multiple contexts when adding devices. Smarter device control has been made possible by Bixby Home Platform, an intelligent layer which sits between Bixby Voice – which provides natural language understanding and issues commands – and SmartThings’ Internet of Things (IoT) layer – which provides connection and operation between devices. Commands that previously had to be made individually for separate devices can now be more efficiently undertaken using the Bixby Home Platform. We are introducing this tool at SDC21 and currently working on providing it to third-party developers in the future.

In the past, TVs were evaluated only on their resolution and design, but given changing lifestyles and user demands, the kind of content a TV is able to provide has become paramount. Thanks to the Tizen platform, Samsung’s Smart TVs are able to provide users with a wide range of content able to suit any taste. Ju-hyun Choi, a Staff Engineer at the Software Development Group, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, describes below how Tizen has evolved to provide partners with the optimal environment in which they can develop with wide compatibility and stability.

Q: What are the new functions of Tizen Web Platform for Samsung Smart TV?

Through a powerful web standard technology called WebAssembly, high-performance web apps can now be developed on Samsung Smart TVs. For SDC21, we have prepared an upgrade plan that allows for the installation of the very latest web features for previously-released Smart TVs.

Q: The competitive edge held by Tizen-based display products has been strengthened thanks to the cooperation of partners from various fields. What are your future collaboration plans?

We are currently working on web-based cloud games, with the goal of allowing users to play the latest games on their Samsung Smart TV equipped with the Tizen platform – all without the latest consoles or expensive graphic cards. In order to achieve this, we are working closely with our current service partners. The Tizen platform, an open source-based operating system (OS), is open to everyone and we are working to provide the best possible development environment to developers that features a wide range of compatibility and development tools.

A Must for Innovative User Experiences: On-Device Personalized Neural Networks

Recently, on-device AI technology has been garnering attention. In the past, a high-performance cloud server capable of performing complex calculations was required in order to run AI-based apps, but when the neural network used in AI apps runs within the device, many advantages for users emerge. Jihoon Lee, an Engineer at the On-Device Lab at Samsung Research, explains below the role of on-device AI and cooperation with developers.

Q: On-device AI is considered a must for powerful and innovative consumer experiences. What kind of benefits will users enjoy from using it?

The biggest advantage offered by on-device AI is that the privacy of the users is maintained since all processing occurs on-device. Developers, too, will be able to provide services that are that much closer to the users, while also free from privacy concerns. For example, a camera app that harnesses facial recognition will not share sensitive data with a server if the AI is run on-device.

Another advantage is that on-device AI models can be used without an Internet connection or any mobile data consumption. For example, if a certain on-device AI model is required to be on constant low-power standby, the necessity of an Internet connection or data consumption could be a big limitation. With on-device AI, user application experiences are improved since there is no need to send data to a server and wait for results – resulting in reduced response times.

Thirdly, one is able to create custom AI directly on their device. Previously, the concept of personalizing the already-deployed AI firsthand was unexplored, as there was no framework to help train a deep-learning model on-device. Moving forward, we expect that NNTrainer, which we are presenting at SDC21, will play a big role in better recognizing a user’s face, their accent and even their pets to automatically create photo albums based on their furry friends – and more.

Q: In the future, what kind of synergies can be expected in this field through cooperation with the developers present at SDC?

Ultimately, we hope to bring users closer to AI through on-device training and personalization. We look forward to developers who attend SDC21’s sessions recognizing and utilizing NNTrainer in order to provide AI that is closer to users. Following such collaboration, NNTrainer, currently in its initial stages will become an even more mature framework. Since it is being developed as an open source, anyone can search for it and contribute directly.

Developing Watch Apps for Wear OS Powered by Samsung

Won-Hee Seo, a Staff Engineer at the Strategic Partner R&D Group, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics, below introduces the new developer tools and benefits of creating watch apps for the Wear OS Powered by Samsung platform, running on the Galaxy Watch4 series.

Q: It’s now easier to develop a great watch app for the Wear OS ecosystem. What are some new helpful experiences that will be available to users?

With the Galaxy Watch4 series, the most loved and used watch apps and services have been optimized for the new Wear OS Powered by Samsung platform. In addition to Samsung and Google services and apps such as Google Maps and YouTube Music, users will also have access to their favorite watch apps available for download in the Google Play Store. In particular, health-related apps, including Sleep Cycle, are starting to launch and are growing in popularity.

Many developer partners have started to work with the new tools available for the Wear OS platform, which has led to the release of many useful apps.

Moreover, we have launched Watch Face Studio, a new developer tool that makes it easy to design watch faces. Thanks to this tool, designers and developers will be able to create more watch faces, which provides users with a greater variety of watch faces to choose from, helping them to further personalize their watch with their own tastes.

Q: Throughout this session, you discussed the development of new watch apps with other developers. What was at the center of the discussion?

A total of four watch-related sessions were arranged for SDC21: one Highlight Session and three Tech Talk Sessions. They provide all the necessary information for developers, such as the developer guide, in order to help them more easily create diverse watch apps and services. In order to help stimulate the watch face market, a session was also added to SDC21 to provide a detailed introduction to the Watch Face Studio tool that is set to allow designers and developers to easily design and create faces.

Samsung’s designers worked hard to create this user-friendly structure with all the basic watch-like qualities that avoids anything complicated or distracting in order to develop a truly differentiated product. By removing any unnecessary decorative elements and focusing on the true essence of the device, the Galaxy Watch series designers managed to create a watch design that is not only timeless, but is also the perfect addition to any user’s wrist.

A Singular Identity

The Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic both share a single design language and therefore a consistent identity. Based on the essence of the circle, a seamless line from the screen to the body frame and to the strap has been applied to both models based on the concept of the circle, and instead of pursuing differentiated design ideas such as ‘minimalistic’ or ‘classic’ as before, Samsung’s designers truly honed in on the concept of the circle to create a design that is bolder and more unique. Seamless Aesthetic, Seamless Fit

The Galaxy Watch4’s strap connects seamlessly and effortlessly to the watch body. Samsung’s designers created a silhouette that serves as an outline for the circular frame in order to emphasize the screen better. The body line design is not only crucial for aesthetic appeal, but also for providing optimal fit for users. The designers carried out countless mock-up trials in order to create the slimmest and most flexible line design possible that also offers users a natural and snug fit on their wrists.

Meticulous Design

A smartwatch can help a user track their movement and other health-related information as it is so closely placed in contact with its user’s body. Samsung’s designers focused on his ‘monitoring’ aspect of the smartwatch and considered several ways to improve the watch’s fit and stability for this purpose. The result of this development process is the H-Wing strap. The Galaxy Watch4 series’ H-Wing strap connects with the screen and ensures that the sensors underneath the watch are attached firmly to the user’s wrist. This security provides a stable, ergonomic fit with greater accuracy for tasks such as measuring the user’s heart rate or ECG.

Effective Materials

Samsung’s designers made sure to produce a strap for the Galaxy Watch4 series that is able to meet a user’s expectation in terms of aesthetic as well as functionality. The resulting Hybrid Leather Band was designed meticulously with both these standards in mind: its exterior is made of leather, while the interior of the strap is made with sweat-resistant Fluoroelastomer (FKM). While the exterior and the interior sides of the strap are made from different materials, they come together seamlessly thanks to a unified color scheme.

Color is a design element that allows for self-expression while also bringing a product to life. Samsung’s designers made sure to develop a variety of strap colors based on the latest global trends so that users can complete their look in style.

The body frame of Galaxy Watch4 comes in black, green, silver and pink gold, while Galaxy Watch4 Classic comes in the classic shades of black and silver. The extensive strap selection for the series comes in a variety of colors that complement both the watch bodies and their function, including the Sport Band, Ridge Sport Band, Extreme Sport Band, Hybrid Leather Band and the Milanese Band. These straps can be purchased separately so that users can pick and choose their straps as they see fit.

Q: What is the target sales goal for the Galaxy Z series and what steps are you taking to reach it?

Many surveys have shown us that the market demand for foldable smartphones is growing, in fact up to 6.5 million units in 2021,¹ triple the demand of last year. Samsung is positioned to be the leading and foremost provider, set to drive volume beyond the market demand.

With the new Galaxy Z series, we’re bringing foldable innovations to more consumers by breaking down the barriers of entry with our pricings. I am confident that with our new Galaxy Z series, we can drive record high demand for foldables, inviting even more consumers to enjoy this new way of using their smartphone.

Q: How are you addressing durability concerns with the new Galaxy Z series? Are the new foldables really durable enough for everyday extended use?

Answered by Dr. Won-Joon Choi, Executive Vice President and Head of the Flagship Product R&D Team, Mobile Communications Business

For the new foldable series, we had a big mission: the durability, so that our customers can use the devices with peace of mind for everyday extended use. To do that, we started from scratch in order to make the ‘impossible’, ‘possible’.

Water resistance and increased durability are the key features we focused on for our new foldable devices so that users can take their devices with them anywhere with confidence, whether they are breaking a sweat at the gym or relaxing by the pool.

We are able to deliver the world’s first water resistant foldable smartphones by implementing an innovative sealing design that our engineering team has come up with. We’ve also increased the durability of our flexible displays by about 80 percent compared to the previous foldables by redesigning the layer structure and using a new protective film.

Furthermore, the outer body of the Galaxy Z series is protected by Armor Aluminum and Gorilla Glass Victus, our strongest aluminum frame and toughest glass material yet. Thanks to all these innovations, we believe that foldable smartphones such as the Galaxy Z series are set to become the new standard in mobile devices as the category turns mainstream.

Q: What are you most excited about with Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3?

We designed the new Galaxy Z series to address consumers’ needs in every moment – capturing, communicating, sharing and expressing. One of my favorite features is the hands-free selfie with the Galaxy Z Flip3. Continuing our collaboration with Google, we made the video call experience even better. Within Google Duo, the camera automatically zooms in and out to fit everyone into the frame. With HD quality, our premium camera system and the devices’ amazing displays, your hands-free video calls are vivid, clear and more enjoyable.

Furthermore, for Galaxy Z Fold3, we have enabled the S Pen experience with our Wacom partnership, so that users can write down on its large screen for the first time on foldables. You can even watch content on the top half of your screen and take notes with your S Pen on the bottom half.

Q: Is there enough market demand for foldable devices? What do you think consumers want from the new Galaxy Z series?

Samsung pioneered the foldable form factor because we believe in the amazing potential for this technology to, quite literally, open up new experiences. People really appreciate their phones’ unique form factor and the flexibility it provides to multitask, or enjoy their favorite shows, on a large, portable screen. These experiences are a big reason why foldable users love their devices, and nearly 9 out of 10 Galaxy Z series users want to buy another foldable as their next device.² In fact, the foldable market is set to triple in size this year over last – and Samsung is a primary driver of that growth.

We have improved our latest Galaxy Z series devices to address the biggest consumer needs and wants. Consumers told us that they were looking for increased durability, new and improved displays, S Pen functionality and more apps tailored specifically to the foldable experience. Q: What improvements did you make to optimize the S Pen experience for the foldable device?

Samsung and Wacom have been working closely together for over 10 years on the S Pen, always innovating to deliver unique and differentiated experiences to Galaxy users.

For the foldable device, we have renewed the S Pen technology to make it more optimized and more special for the new product. Not only does it offer fantastic performance such as less latency and super precision, it also comes with a finely tuned-up pen tip structure to deliver excellent drawing and writing experiences on the foldable screen surface.

We are so honored to see our technologies continue to be used in Galaxy devices and will keep supporting the expanded Galaxy portfolio with the S Pen moving forward.

Q: Why would a user buy a Galaxy Watch4 over other health-specific smartwatches?
