This year’s Samsung Developer Conference brought together over 6,000 developers, innovators and Samsung partners from around the world for two jam-packed days of events that showcased how Samsung’s interconnected and intelligent services offer tools to build a more open and connected future.

Kicking off the full slate of presentations, discussions and hands-on labs held at San Francisco’s Moscone West convention center were keynote speeches from Samsung and tech industry leaders. The opening keynote event illuminated Samsung’s efforts to usher in the new phase of IoT that it’s calling “Intelligence of Things”, and showcased the exciting implications for developers and consumers.

Check out the highlights of the keynotes below.

SDC 2017 attendees take their seats before the start of the conference’s keynote event.

DJ Koh, Samsung Electronics’ President of Mobile Communications Business, opens the conference by discussing how Samsung’s leadership in hardware, IoT, artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) is bringing the company closer to realizing its vision of an innovative future created through “connected thinking”, where connected experiences are seamless and unified across devices.

During his speech, Mr. Koh announced that Samsung will unite its IoT services – including Samsung Connect, SmartThings and ARTIK – into a powerful, integrated platform called SmartThings, which will go beyond smartphones and ultimately unite the world’s largest ecosystem of mobile devices, appliances, TVs and IoT sensors.

World’s largest manufacturer of consumer electronics pledges to work collaboratively with industry and government to bring IoT to scale and improve quality of life for people everywhere

Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman & CEO Dr. Oh-Hyun Kwon unveiled today Samsung’s vision for ‘Human-Centered IoT,’ including a strategy to spend $1.2 billion over 4 years for U.S.-based Internet of Things (IoT) R&D and investments. This will be led by the Samsung Strategy and Innovation Center, Global Innovation Center and Samsung Research America, part of Samsung’s U.S. footprint of more than 15,000 employees across the country.

Vice Chairman Kwon delivered this news in a speech as part of a Samsung-hosted forum in Washington, D.C. The event, entitled Internet of Things: Transforming the Future, brought together technology industry leaders with policymakers and influencers to discuss the many ways IoT can benefit society, and how to tackle the challenges that remain in bringing it to scale.

Vice Chairman Kwon called for his peers to “start talking and thinking differently about IoT,” with a human-centered approach, embracing the life-changing possibilities of the technology and working together to bring these benefits to society at-large.

“I am excited to show how we are moving IoT to the center of our strategy and am delighted to announce that Samsung is planning to spend $1.2 Billion in U.S.-centered IoT investments and R&D over the next 4 years,” said Vice Chairman Kwon.

“At Samsung, putting people at the center of everything we do is our highest value,” said Kwon. “The same must be true for IoT if we want to realize its full transformative power. Today, IoT is changing individual lives – helping people to age in their own homes. But tomorrow, using IoT, we can give the same independence to millions of Americans. We can keep people out of hospitals and nursing homes. As our populations live longer, these benefits and cost savings for society cannot be ignored.”

In his keynote Vice Chairman Kwon offered industry and policymakers two principles in addition to a ‘human-centered’ approach: to be open and collaborative.

“If we want innovators everywhere to make use of IoT, we must make sure all tools are open to them. This means technologies that connect to each other, because we know that boundaries around technologies hold back innovation and scale,” the Vice Chairman said.

He also warned that sector-specific regulations would inherently fragment the development of IoT, impeding devices and platforms from connecting to each other.

As the IoT ecosystem is by nature connected and interwoven, collaboration is vital to promoting this level of openness and interconnection. In this vein, Vice Chairman Kwon urged attendees to pursue cross-sector dialogue and partnerships, and announced Samsung’s role as a co-founder of the newly launched National IoT Strategy Dialogue.

The Dialogue, to be hosted by the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI), will design a National IoT Strategy as a tool to inform policy makers on enabling the technology to deliver benefits for individuals, communities, innovators and the U.S. economy.

This announcement, Vice Chairman Kwon reinforced, “is not about the first steps – that’s because IoT is already happening all around us. It’s time to imagine the transformative potential of IoT for our societies – and learn how to achieve its human, social benefits at scale.”

The event is part of Vision for Tomorrow, Samsung’s recently launched public affairs platform for cross-sector collaboration around issues affecting the policy dialogue in the U.S. and around the world.

“We believe the software is the soul of the machine. Software is central to creating a truly meaningful device experience.”

Injong Rhee, EVP & Head of R&D, Software and Services of Samsung Electronics’ Mobile Communications Business, emphasized Samsung Mobile’s strategy to become a provider of meaningful software and services to make the company’s hardware more valuable to consumers during the opening keynote speech of the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) 2016.

In his speech, Rhee also called for greater collaboration between developers and partners from various industries as the world becomes increasingly connected, and gave attendees a glimpse into the rich possibilities offered by the company’s ecosystem.

Samsung Knox

Samsung Knox is a software platform and an ecosystem for security, which Samsung created by building on its unique device technology. It is the foundation of most of the company’s services including Samsung Pay, Samsung Health and Samsung Connect Auto, which need strong security and data privacy.

Its commitment to interoperability will now be extended beyond Android to include Tizen—an operating system that is expected to play a central role in numerous Internet of Things devices in the near future. Only Samsung, using Tizen and Knox, can offer this combination of an open ecosystem with strong, hardware-based security and global connectivity.

Samsung Pay

In addition to ensuring simplicity and security, Samsung wanted to enable Samsung Pay to be used virtually anywhere. To do this, magnetic secure transmission (MST) was built into the back of the phone, allowing the device to function in the same way that traditional credit cards do.

This is a perfect example of Samsung’s software strategy—where a unique hardware feature is leveraged to enable a new service, one that provides a compelling user experience and delivers real value to consumers.

Samsung is adding to this value through continuous global expansion, as well as by including additional features such as support for membership cards, gift and private label cards, transit cards and online payments.

Samsung Connect Auto

Samsung is seizing opportunities for new applications and services that take advantage of an always-on connection in the car, the biggest platform in the world after mobile.

Working with leading mobile operators, automakers, insurance companies and rental car agencies, Samsung is creating a set of products and services that make driving safer, as well as more eco-friendly, productive and fun. Included among these is Connect Auto, a simple device that plugs into the car’s dashboard.

Samsung is also building an API and SDK on their open platform so developers will be able to build their own applications, and is planning to start a limited beta program this quarter and a public beta program next quarter.

Samsung Health

When Samsung launched S Health in 2012, the company aimed to empower people to live healthier lives by focusing on the pillars of healthy living—diet, activity and sleep. Today, the app is used by 150 million users in more than 130 countries.

Going forward, Samsung is prioritizing three key areas in its health services: empowerment, connectivity and security. The company is also building new services with partners across the healthcare system to solve key industry pain points.

For example, Samsung is working with HealthTap to bring medical expertise to users anytime, anywhere, and is developing remote monitoring technologies with hospitals and partners like Vivify to improve care while reducing costs. Moreover, Samsung is developing chronic disease management solutions that use its phone and wearable data to generate actionable insights and a comprehensive view of the user.

Soundcamp

Soundcamp is Samsung’s music creation app that enables users to record and perform their own songs with no sound lag.

It is not just for musicians. Audio app developers can also use it by integrating it into their own music applications. With Samsung’s Professional Audio SDK, third-party apps can utilize low-latency audio and inter-application audio routing.

Additionally, Samsung is working side by side Google’s Android audio team to make Samsung’s SDK compatible with many other Android devices.

Samsung Gaming

Mobile has become the platform for playing games and the Galaxy S7 was designed with a slew of features to improve the gaming experience for both gamers and developers. It is the first smartphone on the market to support Vulkan and boasts Game Tools and Game Launcher—tools that make gaming more fun and convenient.

Along the same vein, Samsung announced the Galaxy Game Dev Program, which will give developers a direct channel to the company and its partners’ support to allow them to make the best games possible on Samsung devices.

Samsung VR

Samsung believes that 2016 is shaping up to be the year of VR and is working to enable users to create, watch and discover VR content more easily with the Gear 360 camera, the Gear VR headset and the Samsung Milk VR service.

With the introduction of the Gear 360 camera, Samsung also enhanced the way to view Milk VR content by releasing the Milk VR app for the Gear VR. This new companion Android app allows you to enjoy content from Milk VR on your smartphone without GearVR. They also created the samsungmilkvr.com website.

New features have been added to Milk VR to better support developers. The Milk VR upload SDK, for example, allows makers of 360 cameras and 360 video editing tools to directly upload to Milk VR, regardless of the manufacturers. Also, with new tools on samsungmilkvr.com, developers can add interactive hotspots, hyperlinks between two 360 videos, to VR videos.

Samsung is also providing features that let users stream content from hard drives or media servers on local networks. The company plans to release a live streaming SDK in the coming months to allow for the creation of live streaming end points, real time transcoding and distribution to Gear VR users.

SDC 2016 will feature presentations from tech leaders and will offer a number of sessions in which developers can exchange ideas, partake in new experiences and explore potential innovations. Through the conference, Samsung aims to transform the future by combining its hardware, software and services with developers’ ideas.

The countdown to IFA 2015 has officially begun, and this year’s event will most certainly be one of exciting surprises and events. And, like each year, one of the more anticipated moments is certainly the keynote address. But before the fun begins, let’s take a look back at last year’s opening keynote.

Given that Samsung had already offered a glimpse of its then-latest products—the Galaxy Note 4, Gear VR and POWERbot VR9000—over the days leading up to the commencement of IFA 2014, many were curious to see what Samsung had in store for the keynote speech.

From the Lightbulb to the Internet of Things

The keynote began with a mention of the theoretical physicist Albert Einstein, who, in 1930, spoke at the opening of the German Broadcasting Exhibition (as IFA was then known) about the transformative power of innovation in our daily lives. The host noted how Einstein’s talk 84 years earlier, which centered on how the invention of the radio would change society, is still relevant today; and, despite how far we have come technologically, “the most dramatic change is yet to come.” With that, BK Yoon, President and CEO of Samsung Electronics, was introduced.

Yoon briefly walked the audience through a century’s worth of technological advancements, starting with the invention of the lightbulb and making his way to home appliances and more recent digital devices, focusing on how much technology has developed to improve our way of life and accelerated to move at lightning speeds. He continued by explaining that, as the Big Data market is predicted to grow to $32.4 billion by 2020, six times faster than the overall IT market, more than 212 billion devices will be part of the Internet of Things by then.

IoT, and connectivity in general, he forecasted, will trigger a quantum leap of innovation while “the biggest change, the biggest transformation, it will happen in our homes at a speed we can barely imagine.”

Connected and Adaptive: The Home of the Future

Yoon was quick to share Samsung’s vision of the “Home of the Future,” the practical expression of those predictions. He also made it clear that this vision is not about showing off technical details, but rather making sure that it fits into people’s lifestyles while anticipating and meeting their constantly changing needs.

And because every person has different needs, as illustrated in a video presentation, each home requires different levels of protection, flexibility and responsiveness; therefore, the Home of the Future must be customizable more so than smart, and utilize technology in a way that it is virtually unnoticeable.

The future home, Yoon suggests, will be a “Show Me, Know Me and Tell Me home” that adapts to its inhabitants.

He went on to explain. “First, it will be a ‘Show Me’ home that makes complex data visible and useful, so that you can make better choices. For example, it will show when to take your medicine, alert you to air pollution or give you choices for saving energy. Second, it will be a ‘Know Me’ home that learns your needs and recognizes your lifestyle patterns. It’s a home that knows when your day starts. For example, it will turn on the lights and the coffee pot just in time. Third, it will be a ‘Tell Me’ home that proactively adjusts to your needs, and provides suggestions without being asked. Imagine a home that tells you there are leftover ingredients, and suggests a recipe to use them up… Ultimately, it will care for me and you.”

Samsung believes that the Home of the Future will be woven into the fabric of our lives just as quickly as smartphones and tablets were in recent years. Having partnered with industry leaders, such as the Open Interconnect Consortium, and acquired SmartThings, a leading open IoT platform, to create interconnected solutions and industry standards, Yoon identified that Samsung was aiming to take the leading role in the area.

A Giant Leap in the History of Innovation

Having laid the foundation, Yoon noted that the opportunities ahead are even more enormous, with approximately 45 million smart homes expected to be installed by 2018, worth $100 billion. He explained that he anticipates that, as services take off, a ripple effect will be created across society, allowing it to be more social and more connected.

As the Samsung Keynote at IFA 2014 wrapped up, BK Yoon reiterated that he doesn’t want the public to think of Samsung as a technology company. Instead, he hopes that people will think of Samsung as a service provider of unique, tailored experiences.

To conclude, Yoon encouraged the public to embrace the vision of the Home of the Future, and to step up together to bring about what will most certainly be the biggest technological leap in the history of innovation. In doing so, Samsung set the mood for what would be one of the biggest and best weeks in the history of IFA.

Stay tuned to see what this year’s keynote address will unveil about Samsung’s plans and visions, and watch the 2014 opening keynote in its entirety below.

The President and Chief Strategy Officer of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Young Sohn has called on the technology industry to use the Internet of Things (IoT) to address major challenges the world faces today. He also emphasized the importance of open platforms and industry collaboration to accelerate development of new IoT applications and services.

“As an industry we must join together to use the power of IoT to address challenges posed by issues such as aging population demographics, water shortages, increasing traffic congestion, pollution and major health issues,” said Sohn. “We need to create powerful open platforms that will harness the information generated by IoT to develop new insights and new approaches to meet the challenges we face as a society.”

To enable faster deployment of IoT applications and services, Sohn announced the Samsung ARTIK platform. ARTIK is a production-ready, open platform that includes the hardware, software, development boards, drivers, tools, advanced security features and connectivity for rapidly building cloud-connected IoT devices. The ARTIK platform comes in a variety of configurations to meet the specific requirements of a wide range of IoT market segments from wearables and home automation, to smart lighting and industrial applications. More information on the ARTIK platform can be found by visiting www.artik.io.

SmartThings Founder and CEO Alex Hawkinson joined with Young Sohn during his keynote to introduce SmartThings Open Cloud. Open Cloud is powered by SAMI, a data driven development platform that Samsung announced last May that includes simple, open APIs and SDKs. The open platform is a cloud-based software layer that allows the sharing of diverse data sets from an unlimited number of sources. This vast amount of data, which previously would have been impossible to bring together, can then be broken up into smaller chunks for visualization and analysis.

SmartThings Open Cloud allows any device connected to the Internet to communicate with any other connected device, generating new information, new correlations and entirely new insights. It enables device makers to focus on building IoT devices and applications without having to build and maintain the cloud infrastructure required to connect those devices.

To demonstrate the potential for IoT to meet major societal challenges, Sohn also announced the Samsung ARTIK Challenge – offering a top prize of $100,000 for the most effective use of IoT and ARTIK technology for reducing water consumption by individuals or municipalities.

More information on the Samsung ARTIK Challenge can be found at ARTIK.challengepost.com.

Throughout his keynote address, Sohn underscored the importance of open platforms, security and an ecosystem of partners that are all necessary to accelerate the growth of IoT and achieve its full benefits. He was joined on stage by representatives of several startup companies Samsung is working with to develop technologies based on open platforms. In addition, the company announced that the Samsung ARTIK platform would be incorporated into future versions of Samsung digital appliances and that those appliances would also connect to the SmartThings Open Cloud.

BMW has started connecting its cars 17 years ago. In 1997, BMW was the first carmaker to introduce the e-call in their vehicles. In 2008, they were the first to provide free internet access in the automotive industry. In 2011, BMW integrated with third party app developers such as Spotify to enhance their drivers’ in-car experiences. And last year, BMW launched the BMW Connected Drive Store and navigation update “over-the-air”.

Most of the BMW fleet is now connected; the “Internet of Cars” is already here today. In the “Internet of Things,” the boundaries between home, office and other devices are disappearing. In the “Internet of Cars,” the most fascinating of devices – the automobile – are connected to personal digital assistant – seamlessly, safely, and easily.

By collaborating with companies in other industries like Samsung, which provides new eco-systems for their customers, BMW has been connecting the customers’ world to the company itself. Notable examples are the BMW Remote App, which allows users to control their BMW cars and know about their cars’ state anytime with the connected Samsung Gear S; the latest and world’s first “BMW Touch Command,” a Samsung tablet that is fully integrated into the environment of the car and comes with a dedicated BMW HMI.

BMW has also been connecting its cars to the Smart Home. For example, the Solar Car port can provide wireless inductive charging. Users are informed by their Smart TVs about the “Traffic situation” or “charge status” of their BMWs. Frickenstein claimed that Samsung’s Gear S, tablets and Smart Home integration are three steps towards the “Internet of Cars”.

Frickenstien strongly believes that connectivity will be the key technology for highly automated driving in the future. He predicts that car sensor information will be shared over the cloud with all other cars – swarm intelligence straight ahead.

Open platform, open innovation, open communication between different devices… Being open is a critical aspect in building a successful eco-system for the Internet of Things (IoT). As a part of its drive to address this, Samsung last year acquired SmartThings, creator of the leading open platform for IoT. SmartThings continued to operate independently under its founder and CEO Alex Hawkinson as part of the Samsung Open Innovation Center (OIC).

At the CES 2015 Opening Keynote, as BK Yoon, President and CEO at Samsung Electronics, addressed the world on IoT, Hawkinson was also there to share his two cents. Now, working with Samsung as a part of Samsung, SmartThings’ services not only work with all of Samsung’s wearable devices like Gear S and all its connected appliances, it’s been expanding ever since.

Hawkinson explained that the SmartThings ecosystem is now compatible with more devices than any other IoT or smart home platform in the world. “It gives consumers the freedom of choice across all top IoT services and applications — from security and energy savings to entertainment, health and beyond.”

Along with new SmartThings Hub and Sensors and an optional Premium Service, SmartThings also announced new integrations on the open platform including Netgear and D-Link cameras, Somfy window shades, Philips hue lighting, Honeywell thermostats, Chamberlain garage door openers and more. All its services will be available nationwide in April.

Also, as each person, family and country has different needs, a large, no, a huge developer community is required – you need all the inspiration and imagination from the different people. Not only the IoT software and IoT hardware, we need a truly open approach that embraces developers. Well, according to Hawkinson, “the number of developers working with the SmartThings platform has doubled since the partnership with Samsung.”

Did you just miss the keynote address by the CEO and president of Samsung Electronics BK Yoon? Do not worry; we took some notes (and also live tweeted) during the event. Here are the highlights.

Phrase of the day:

Unlock the infinite possibilities of the Internet of Things

The era of Internet of Things isn’t a distant idea of the future. It has already begun. However, it is important that it evolves around our lifestyles and this can only be done by working closely with industry peers and partners, and openness among devices. Samsung believes together, we can unlock the infinite possibilities of IoT.

[new_royalslider id=”215″]

Key Messages:

#1 IoT ready Hardware

– By 2017, all Samsung televisions will be IoT devices, and in five years, all Samsung hardware will be IoT devices.

– Samsung is developing advanced sensors that are precise enough to understand someone’s surrounding environment and offer the right solution or service.

– Samsung is also planning to bring more energy-efficient and compact chips so that it can be implemented into a wide range of devices, especially wearables.

#2 Open ecosystem

– Samsung sees openness as a key to IoT.

– The SmartThings ecosystem is compatible with more devices than any other platform and has remained an open platform ever since it joined Samsung last August.

– SmartThings announced the next generation of its platform, including a new Hub and sensors, further integrations with third party devices and a new subscription service called SmartThings Premium.

– Samsung will invest more than USD100 million in its developer community in 2015.

#3 Collaboration

– Samsung believes that IoT will revolutionize every industry and the potential impact of it must be seen across all kinds of industries

– To realize lifestyle oriented IoT, we will need infrastructures and services, which is only possible if every player in every industry work together.
