MWC19 is officially underway and attendees have been flocking to see the very latest offerings Samsung Electronics has on show. This year’s iteration of the world’s largest mobile industry exhibition is themed ‘Intelligent Connectivity’, and in the exhibition’s 4-day span, over 100,000 visitors are expected to attend.

Right at the center of Barcelona’s cutting-edge Fira Gran Via exhibition center, Samsung has installed two dynamic booths showcasing the company’s latest innovations in mobile technology. This year, visitors have been amazed not only by the chance to get a first, hands-on look at the newest mobile devices such as Galaxy S10 5G and Galaxy Fold, but also by Samsung’s groundbreaking advancements in 5G connectivity, which the company has been working on bringing to life over the past decade.

If you’re not able to stop by the Fira Gran Via to learn more about ‘Everything 5G’ this year, here is a rundown of the five biggest topics underlying Samsung’s presence at MWC this year.

Samsung Electronics’ MWC19 booth is packed with attendees eager to take a closer look at the company’s latest innovations.

#1 Introducing Samsung’s First 5G Smartphone, Galaxy S10 5G

At Samsung’s MWC Mobile booth, visitors have been able to get up close and experience the full range of Samsung’s latest mobile innovations. The company’s interactive Mobile booth features the latest additions to flagship range, the Galaxy S10 series, with its latest innovations in display, camera and performance. At the center of Samsung’s MWC Mobile Booth is the Galaxy S10 5G, the company’s first 5G smartphone.

The booth showcased Samsung’s latest mobile offerings – the release of which marks a decade of Galaxy innovation – as well as network solutions that draw from the company’s decades-long expertise in this area.

Samsung Electronics recently unveiled its groundbreaking innovation, the Galaxy Fold, Samsung’s first foldable smartphone ushering in a whole new chapter in mobile history. The pioneering Galaxy Fold is set to transform the way people manage their daily lives with their smart devices thanks to the Fold’s dynamic versatile usability and multitasking possibilities.

To learn more about how the Galaxy Fold came to be and the powerful effect it is set to have on consumers’ lives, Samsung Newsroom sat down with Eui-Suk Chung, Executive Vice President and Head of Software and Artificial Intelligence at Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business during the MWC19 in Barcelona.

Q. The potential Galaxy Fold has for the way we use our smartphones is immense. What motivated such a development?

“Our understanding of consumer needs – in particular, demand for a larger device screen that is comfortable to hold – led us to create this revolutionary device. Samsung had already pioneered category-defining innovation with the Galaxy Note series, the ‘phablet’ hybrid, but we had noticed that a demand for even larger screens to keep up with content consumption has still not wavered. We debuted the prototypes of a flexible display technology in 2011, but it took another eight years to develop the technology to deliver this product in a truly meaningful way for users as a direct response to the way people are currently using their phones.”

Q. Which is?

“In brief, all the time and for all things. With the Galaxy Fold, we are bringing greater device mobility, an expanded screen and a versatile camera into one device that can slip into your pocket. Galaxy Fold is for those who want it all on a bigger screen, but without the bulk – a ‘phone plus more’.”

Q. So what can users expect from the Galaxy Fold?

“Galaxy Fold provides a completely new way for consumers to use a smartphone and get the best out of both of the worlds it draws upon, smartphone and tablet. It is a compact device that unfolds to reveal Samsung’s largest-ever mobile display, optimized for the Android ecosystem and applications on it.

The Galaxy Fold’s software was designed to provide streamlined usage for various scenarios. When the user folds it, they can take a quick look at smartphone notifications and other essentials. Then, when it is unfolded, the user can use the larger immersive display for higher quality viewing on the apps they require and in-depth multitasking.”

Eui-Suk Chung, EVP and Head of Software and AI at Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business

Q. Can you expand on the Galaxy Fold’s multitasking capabilities?

“With the Galaxy Fold’s Multi-Active Window, the multitasking possibilities are virtually endless. For example, a user can open up to three apps simultaneously on the main display to surf, text, share and watch without missing a beat. We developed this main display to allow multitasking with three apps because users can already use two at once, if they wish, on existing smartphones. The Galaxy Fold provides the best possible experience of three apps at once, all in a very comfortable way.

The Fold also makes app usability even easier – the app in use on the cover display with automatically transfer back to the main display when the device is opened, and then transition seamlessly back to the cover display when closed. Users will find that the experience of shifting from the cover to the main display and vice versa is, thanks to the inward fold, as satisfying, as natural and as easy as reading a book.”

Q. Do all apps support App Continuity and Multi-Active Window?

“The Galaxy Fold features UX functionality unlike other devices thanks to the partnerships we have with Google and app developers in the Android developer community. We worked very closely with Google on developing app-compatible software to the end of creating not just a Samsung proprietary solution, but general Android solutions.

We continue to work with the Android developer community to ensure apps are optimized for the Galaxy Fold and that user experience only continues to improve. Support for App Continuity and Multi-Active Window will vary based on the application and the developer’s adherence with Google policies and guidelines.

As more apps are developed to be compatible with foldable-specific features, Samsung will continue to provide the best possible experience for apps not yet optimized for a foldable device thanks to the Galaxy Fold’s app compatibility software.”

Q. What has this collaborative development process been like?

“We wanted to ensure that users’ favorite apps and services were optimized for the Galaxy Fold’s unique UX. Working closely with our partners, we set up a test lab so that we could directly engage and work with top companies to bring the best services to our foldable smartphone. In particular, Samsung and Google have a rich history of close collaboration, and our work together on this foldable device is another example of that.”

Q. Finally, could you elaborate more on the experience of developing a foldable mobile device?

“The making of a foldable smartphone was a large undertaking – from creating materials and methods to overcoming mechanical challenges. From the start, we were focused on achieving the best user experience. All the new elements we had to create – hardware, software, app compatibility – are all layers that have come together to form a device with optimum usability at its core.

We also broke barriers to create the Galaxy Fold. It features a UX functionality unlike other devices made possible by our app developer and Google partnerships.

We are proud to have introduced Samsung’s first-ever foldable smartphone, and we are excited about what’s next – from ‘foldable’ to ‘roll-able’ and even to ‘stretch-able’. New device designs that can be folded in multiple ways are no longer beyond the realm of possibility and Samsung is ready to usher in these options and create meaningful experiences for consumers that help them do more of what they love.”

Stay tuned to Samsung Newsroom for the latest on the Galaxy Fold and other Samsung devices.

Samsung Electronics, Cisco and Orange unveiled today two promising industrial 5G applications – a drone and an industrial robot, at the MWC19 in Barcelona. From February 25th to the 28th, the three companies will demonstrate the 5G-equipped devices at the exhibition for the first time.

5G Drone Application

A Drone carrying a very low latency, high-quality video system is piloted from the Orange booth at the Fira de Barcelona. The drone, which is located outdoors at an Orange datacenter, carries a 5G router (CPE) that is used to transfer commands to the drone and transmit a high-quality video feed with low latency. At the Orange booth, the pilot can be seen controlling the drone by using a 5G tablet. Aeromedia, a leading drone operator, collaborated in this demo.

At MWC19, a demonstrator in the Orange booth is controlling an outdoor drone remotely using a 5G tablet, which is simultaneously displaying a high-quality video feed captured by the drone and transmitted over a 5G network

5G Industrial Robot Application

An autonomous robot carrying manufacturing parts transmits live video feeds taken by a 360º camera and a Full HD camera, both installed in the robot. The video streams allow operators to monitor the robot’s environment remotely, and to react and control it when its autonomous operation is interrupted due to unexpected obstacles in its path. The video and the commands controlling the robot are transmitted through a 5G network. This demonstration was done in cooperation with Acciona, a global company providing renewables, infrastructure and services.

The demonstrations show industrial use cases powered by 5G’s ultra-reliability, low-latency and high-capacity.

Samsung and Cisco joined forces for this live demonstration. Samsung used its 5G solutions including virtualized RAN, one of the smallest 5G access units, multiple indoor and outdoor 5G routers, and 5G tablets. Cisco’s Ultra Gateway Platform delivers a 5G virtual packet core on top of Cisco NFV Infrastructure that brings enhanced throughput and flexibility. Leveraging the wide bandwidth available at mmWave bands, like 26GHz, and advanced antenna technologies like massive MIMO and beamforming, the companies were able to achieve mobility, a very low end-to-end latency, and high capacity enabling the transfer of high-quality video feeds.

“Thanks to this successful test of 5G industrial applications, Orange has been able to verify use cases for verticals that are enabled by this technology,” said Mónica Sala, Chief Technical and Information Officer at Orange Spain. “We can now better understand the way in which this technology works in real industrial environments. This is a major step in driving forward the development of 5G.”

“5G has the potential to transform industry and society by unlocking creative business models,” said GY Seo, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Sales & Marketing, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “By leveraging our commercially-proven 5G solutions, we will continue collaborating with global partners to accelerate real-world use cases powered by 5G, ultimately impacting our everyday lives.”

“We continue to expand our 5G trials with Samsung and Orange to help Orange explore various use cases that fit its customer requirements,” said Kishen Mangat, Vice President and General Manager, Service Provider Mobility, Cisco. “Showcasing our drone and robot here at Mobile World Congress demonstrates the impact 5G can have when paired with virtualization and automation technology to help businesses maximize resources.”

Samsung Electronics America today announced at Mobile World Congress 2019 that Sprint is using Samsung’s 5G New Radio (NR) solutions as the carrier prepares to launch its commercial 5G service.

The new 5G NR solution is enabled by adding Samsung software and a channel card to Samsung’s existing Massive MIMO technology, which has been providing enhanced 4G LTE service in U.S. markets on Sprint’s 2.5GHz TDD network since last year. This allows both 4G LTE and 5G commercial service on Sprint’s network using the ‘split mode’ capabilities of Samsung’s MIMO solution, offering a simple, cost-effective transition to 5G. The solution is capable of achieving more than 1.5Gbps throughput speeds.

Samsung’s 5G NR solution will be in the commercial network for one of Sprint’s first 5G cities, Chicago, IL, scheduled to launch commercially in May. Sprint announced their 5G plans today in a press conference at Mobile World Congress.

“Last year, we were proud to deliver enhanced speeds and capacity to Sprint’s customers through Samsung’s massive MIMO solution,” said Lyle Nyffeler, Vice President, Networks Division, Samsung Electronics America. “Today, we are advancing our technology collaboration by taking this next step with Sprint to deliver commercial 5G NR, and supporting their 5G strategy through this milestone in Chicago.”

“Our collaboration on massive MIMO has delivered significant LTE capacity and speed enhancements,” said Scott Santi, SVP of Network Deployment and Operations at Sprint. “With 5G, we look forward to giving Sprint customers even greater experiences from gaming and entertainment services, to IoT and business applications.”

Samsung’s massive MIMO technology plays a key role in Sprint’s 5G evolution. Thesolution’s split-mode capabilities use the same radio for 4G LTE and 5G NR, offering simple transitions to 5G without requiring tower climbs. Additionally, as subscribers purchase 5G phones, excellent performance quality is retained as 4G capacity transitions to 5G. The MIMO technology features 64T/64R antenna array, beamforming, and carrier aggregation, helping operators inject new capacity into networks without purchasing more spectrum or adding new base stations. The system includes 128antenna elements within a compact form factor.

Using Sprint’s 2.5GHz spectrum, Samsung’s 5G solution will drive hyper-streaming and ultra-fast downloading on 5G smartphones, as well as enhanced experiences with mobile gaming, mixed reality (AR and VR) applications and new enterprise use cases.

At Samsung Networks MWC 2019 booth (Hall 2 (2M20)), the company will showcase its commercial 2.5GHz 64T64R Massive MIMO unit (MMU), as well as a video of the 5G field testing with Sprint in Chicago, IL.
Samsung Electronics’ AI platform, Bixby, is expanding its services to European users by supporting four new languages, including British English, German, Italian and Spanish. In order to celebrate this, Samsung is running a bespoke Bixby Studio in Barcelona’s iconic Plaza Catalunya.

Open from February 23 through to March 3, Bixby Studio offers visitors the chance to experience Bixby’s capabilities across a range of Samsung mobile devices, appliances and smart applications, showcasing how Samsung’s intelligent platform, Bixby, can be utilized for everyday tasks and activities. Each dedicated Zone of the Studio – Welcome, Home, Vision, Kitchen and Gaming – provides a comprehensive look at Bixby’s AI-powered capabilities for each range and also allows visitors the opportunity to trial Bixby for themselves at special Experience Points.

Experience Points in the Welcome zone allow visitors to meet Bixby and learn more about the platform, and in the Home and Kitchen zones, attendees can see how smart home appliances have become even smarter with Bixby’s intelligent voice assistance abilities. Furthermore, in the Vision Zone, visitors can experience Barcelona in a new way through Bixby’s smart location plotting as well as a 360° Look Up platform, and in the Gaming Zone, visitors can take on Bixby in a range of entertaining gaming classics such as Tic-Tac-Toe on dedicated Experience screens.

The Bixby platform features a wide range of Bixby Capsules to help simplify users’ daily lives even further. The Capsules users can add to their Bixby platform cover categories such as travel, weather, music, navigation, and even restaurant recommendations. Visitors to the Plaza Catalunya Bixby Studio are able to trial a localized range of “Spain Exclusive” capsules that provide information on topics like soccer, food and hotels.

These compelling, up-close Bixby experiences are available to visitors of the Bixby Studio Barcelona – and within the first 24 hours of the Studio being open, around 600 people stopped by to learn more. Visitors were impressed with the ‘wow’ effect Bixby’s voice-activated connectivity to smart home applications has, and enjoyed the fun of the Gaming Zone, with many noting its success at entertaining children thanks to the touchscreen interactivity and special child-oriented games. In the Kitchen and Home zones, Bixby’s partnerships with local companies like Idealista and LaLiga to for hands-free property hunting and soccer statistics respectively struck visitors as particularly useful.
