Samsung Electronics and Orange today announced a series of new initiatives that expand their long-term strategic partnership to enhance Samsung Galaxy user experiences across Europe. The two companies will collaborate to reduce waste and extend the lifecycle of mobile devices; implement device and technology testing to prepare for the arrival of 5G standalone; promote the Samsung Galaxy multi-devices experience; and enhance the mobile customer journey with advanced digital services.

Together, the companies are working to reduce the waste attributable to Samsung mobile devices distributed by Orange by extending the lifecycle of a typical product. Orange will offer an extension on the trade-in and the collection programs on used Samsung devices and add a Samsung Certified Refurbished device program through Orange channels. Additionally, the collaboration will leverage the implementation of the Eco-Rating methodology, a pan-industry initiative driven by a consortium of European mobile operators, across Samsung Galaxy smartphones. The new rating will evaluate the environmental impact of the mobile phones during their entire lifecycle from design to disposal, allowing Samsung and Orange to implement further improvements.

As part of this agreement, Samsung and Orange are also preparing for the deployment of advanced 5G standalone (SA) services. The collaboration will see the implementation of end-to-end testing of Samsung devices and technology such as network slicing and voice over Orange’s 5G SA test networks. The process will explore new use-cases made possible through 5G SA network capabilities to support both advanced industrial and entertainment-related services.

Samsung and Orange are also strengthening their collaboration to bring a connected experience powered by Samsung Galaxy devices to Orange customers. This multi-device approach will be deployed in Orange stores and online channels to support Orange’s multi-service strategy, delivering an immersive and seamless mobile experience to end users.

Furthermore, the companies will combine their product and technology assets to provide an upgraded digital activation experience to Orange customers through Samsung smartphone personalization. Samsung will deploy SIM-based personalization of its mobile devices for Orange customers on a single mobile software configuration. Samsung’s over-the-air personalization service will facilitate the discovery and seamless installation of key Orange applications on eligible Samsung Galaxy smartphones regardless of where the customers purchase their Galaxy smartphones.

Finally, Samsung and Orange will progressively generalize the deployment of eSIM activation to a wider range of Samsung devices connected to Orange networks. This will further simplify their users’ experience and reduce the share of plastic-based SIM cards used across the Orange European footprint.

Philippe Lucas, Executive Vice President, Orange Innovation Devices and Partnerships, Orange, commented, “this partnership closely mirrors Orange’s core priorities, contributing to our goals to move rapidly to fulfill our circular economy ambitions and address consumer and societal demand for sustainable devices by pushing trade-in and refurbishment schemes to extend product lifecycles and reduce waste. Furthermore, our commitment to sustainability will drive innovation, enabling differentiation and ultimately deliver growth, as we respond to evolving customer needs. Our close working relationship with Samsung is a great asset in realizing these ambitions.”

“Samsung is dedicated to innovative, strategic partnerships that enable us to scale positive impact around the world,” said Bryan Choi, Executive Vice President and Head of Strategic Marketing of Mobile eXperience Business, Samsung Electronics. “We are pleased to strengthen our relationship with Orange and see Galaxy devices being recycled and reused in different ways and to help provide a more seamless experience for the Galaxy community.”

Samsung Electronics today announced the company is one of the first global vendors to participate in the opening of Orange’s Open RAN Integration Center in Paris, France. In the center, the two companies will collaborate to disaggregate the hardware and software elements of traditional RAN. Samsung’s virtualized RAN (vRAN), which has been proven in the field through commercial deployments with global Tier one operators including the U.S., will be used.

As one of the world’s leading telecommunications operators, Orange provides mobile services to 222 million users in 26 countries including Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The group plans to deploy O-RAN Alliance-compliant base stations starting with indoor and rural configurations and expand to new deployments in the coming years.

“Open RAN is a major evolution of radio access that requires deeper cooperation within the industry. With our European peers, we want to accelerate the development of Open RAN solutions that meet our needs. After the publication of common specifications, Orange’s Open RAN Integration Center will support the development and tuning of solutions from a broad variety of actors,” said Arnaud Vamparys, Senior Vice President of Radio Access Networks and Microwaves at Orange.

Samsung’s vRAN solutions can help ensure more network flexibility, greater scalability and resource efficiency for network operation by replacing dedicated baseband hardware with software elements. Additionally, Samsung’s vRAN supports both low and mid-band spectrums, as well as indoor and outdoor solutions. Samsung is the only major network vendor that has conducted vRAN commercial deployments with Tier one operators in North America, Europe and Asia.

“We are pleased to participate in Orange’s innovative laboratory,” said Woojune Kim, Executive Vice President, Head of Global Sales & Marketing, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “Through this collaboration, we look forward to taking networks to new heights in the European market, enabling operators to offer more immersive mobile services to their users.”

By opening its Open RAN Integration Center in Châtillon, near Paris, Orange will enable the testing and deployment of networks capable of operating with innovative technologies, which will serve as the backbone of the operator’s future networks. At the center, Samsung and Orange will conduct trials to verify capabilities and performance of Samsung’s vRAN, radio and Massive MIMO radio.

Samsung has pioneered the successful delivery of 5G end-to-end infrastructure solutions including chipsets, radios and core. Through ongoing research and development, Samsung drives the industry to advance 5G networks with its market-leading product portfolio from fully virtualized RAN and Core to private network solutions and AI-powered automation tools. The company is currently providing network solutions to mobile operators that deliver connectivity to hundreds of millions of users around the world.

Samsung Electronics and Orange Romania have successfully deployed a 5G New Radio (NR) network to demonstrate a series of 5G use cases at Untold Festival 2019, the largest annual dance music festival in Romania, held from August 1 to August 4.

The two companies started their 5G collaboration in 2018 with a 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) trial in Cluj county, Romania, where Orange mobile customers became the first European users to experience at home 5G services. Now, the companies are ramping up their efforts to bring the benefits of 5G to users in Romania.

At Untold, which drew over 335,000 attendants last year, Orange Romania and Samsung have set up 5G use cases to offer immersive experiences powered by the 5G network’s ultra-low latency and ultra-high speed, unfolding the potential of the next generation technology for all to see. The demonstrations include real-time streaming of the performances, captured by 360-degree cameras built onto the arena’s main stage. The stream is shown at an Orange VR zone set up outside the arena, providing a uniquely immersive viewing experience to fans who visit. The companies are also holding an event demonstrating 5G download speeds reaching above 1Gbps, with a latency reduction of 50% on that experienced when using current LTE technology.

“With these successful demonstrations, we are showcasing the experiences that 5G can bring to Orange customers in Romania,” said Emmanuel Chautard, Chief Technology Officer at Orange Romania. “Together with Samsung, we’re showing live network capabilities, with proof that goes beyond just impressive speeds more centered on the customer experience.”

“5G offers more than just a faster connection; it enables transformative use cases that will benefit people and businesses across the industry,” said GY Seo, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Sales & Marketing, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “These joint demonstrations allow for a glimpse into the new kinds of services and capabilities that will be made possible as we unlock the potential of 5G for users across Europe.”

The trial at Cluj Arena, where the festival is taking place, makes use of Samsung’s latest solutions, including 5G Massive MIMO Units (MMUs), which support the 3.4-3.8GHz frequency band. Samsung 5G MMUs have already been rolled out across Korea by all three Korean 5G operators for use with their 5G commercial service, which launched in April of 2019. This commercially proven MMU is one of the smallest and lightest in the industry, making installation in existing cellular sites very straightforward.

Samsung Electronics, Cisco and Orange unveiled today two promising industrial 5G applications – a drone and an industrial robot, at the MWC19 in Barcelona. From February 25th to the 28th, the three companies will demonstrate the 5G-equipped devices at the exhibition for the first time.

5G Drone Application

A Drone carrying a very low latency, high-quality video system is piloted from the Orange booth at the Fira de Barcelona. The drone, which is located outdoors at an Orange datacenter, carries a 5G router (CPE) that is used to transfer commands to the drone and transmit a high-quality video feed with low latency. At the Orange booth, the pilot can be seen controlling the drone by using a 5G tablet. Aeromedia, a leading drone operator, collaborated in this demo.

At MWC19, a demonstrator in the Orange booth is controlling an outdoor drone remotely using a 5G tablet, which is simultaneously displaying a high-quality video feed captured by the drone and transmitted over a 5G network

5G Industrial Robot Application

An autonomous robot carrying manufacturing parts transmits live video feeds taken by a 360º camera and a Full HD camera, both installed in the robot. The video streams allow operators to monitor the robot’s environment remotely, and to react and control it when its autonomous operation is interrupted due to unexpected obstacles in its path. The video and the commands controlling the robot are transmitted through a 5G network. This demonstration was done in cooperation with Acciona, a global company providing renewables, infrastructure and services.

The demonstrations show industrial use cases powered by 5G’s ultra-reliability, low-latency and high-capacity.

Samsung and Cisco joined forces for this live demonstration. Samsung used its 5G solutions including virtualized RAN, one of the smallest 5G access units, multiple indoor and outdoor 5G routers, and 5G tablets. Cisco’s Ultra Gateway Platform delivers a 5G virtual packet core on top of Cisco NFV Infrastructure that brings enhanced throughput and flexibility. Leveraging the wide bandwidth available at mmWave bands, like 26GHz, and advanced antenna technologies like massive MIMO and beamforming, the companies were able to achieve mobility, a very low end-to-end latency, and high capacity enabling the transfer of high-quality video feeds.

“Thanks to this successful test of 5G industrial applications, Orange has been able to verify use cases for verticals that are enabled by this technology,” said Mónica Sala, Chief Technical and Information Officer at Orange Spain. “We can now better understand the way in which this technology works in real industrial environments. This is a major step in driving forward the development of 5G.”

Samsung Electronics and Cisco announced today that they have successfully completed a friendly-user trial and series of 5G demonstrations with Orange in Floresti, Cluj, Romania.

Since the announcement in February by the three companies of the first multi-vendor 5G fixed wireless trial in Europe (Link), the friendly-user trial has been running for a month and a half across multiple homes in Floresti, Cluj district, Romania. The trial makes use of Samsung’s 5G solutions including the virtualized RAN, one of the smallest 5G access units and multiple indoor and outdoor 5G routers (CPE), as well as Cisco’s Meraki Z3 WiFi Router and Ultra Gateway Platform which delivers a 5G virtual packet core on top of Cisco NFV Infrastructure that brings enhanced throughput and flexibility.

By leveraging the wide bandwidth available at 26 GHz and advanced antenna technologies such as massive MIMO and beamforming, the companies were able to achieve coverage beyond 1 km at 1 Gbps speed for a single user in real live conditions. Measurements in these conditions also show aggregated cell downlink throughputs of 3 Gbps with few users, although the system capacity is significantly higher.

On July 2 and 3, Samsung and Cisco together with Orange are holding a demonstration near Floresti City Hall to present the results of the trial and showcase some of the most promising 5G-powered smart city and home entertainment solutions in front of media and partners from across the industry.

Smart City Applications

Samsung’s Connectivity Node is installed on a streetlamp to provide wireless connectivity for temperature and humidity sensors and security cameras. Sensors and cameras are connected wirelessly to the node, which is then connected to the core network via 5G. The Connectivity Node is a compact, high-capacity, easy-to-install and economical alternative for places where wireline deployment is unfeasible or costly.

Home Entertainment Applications

Several parallel UHD videos and VR sessions are streamed simultaneously over the same 5G broadband connection. All of the content is transmitted via the 5G core and 5G radio link. The 5G system capacity is crucial to this demonstration as it not only allows simultaneous UHD streaming over multiple screens under one roof, but also provides extra capacity in case content consumption further increases.

In another demonstration, two players compete against each other in a live cloud video game over the 5G network. Their split-second actions and the game’s seamless operation are made possible by the network’s extremely low latency.

Real Time Security Camera Analytics

Cisco Meraki MV21 cameras are deployed, providing video coverage as well as advanced video-based analytics. Three major use-cases are demonstrated with application for Smart Cities solution as well as for B2B verticals such as retail. Video data can be used to provide accurate count of people moving in the camera field, deliver precious information to improve disposal of products in retail environment and better organise space for efficiency and improved service.

“Thanks to this first successful test of 5G Fixed Wireless Access in the 26 GHz band, Orange has been able to verify several use cases enabled by this technology. We can now better understand the way in which this technology works in real usage environments in order to complement wireline solutions. This is a major step in driving forward the development of 5G in Europe and Africa.” said Arnaud Vamparys, Senior Vice President, Radio Networks and Microwaves, at Orange.

“5G will be more than just a faster internet connection. 5G will make cities safer and more convenient than ever before, and it will bring home entertainment to new levels that only existed in our imagination,” said GY Seo, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Sales & Marketing Team, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “These demonstrations offer a glimpse into some of the new, groundbreaking services and capabilities that people across Europe will be able to enjoy in their everyday lives in the future.”

“With 5G we have the opportunity to help service providers like Orange broaden their portfolios to deliver new levels of connected experiences for consumers, businesses and governments,” said Yvette Kanouff, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Service Provider Business, Cisco. “Our work with Samsung and Orange on this project is a great example of how we are enabling an innovation eco-system to test and deliver a broad range of 5G services that will offer the communities in Romania faster connections to more devices and applications that make their lives better.”
