Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy brand sound, “Over the Horizon,” returns in 2026 with the theme “A Soundtrack of the Earth,” capturing the planet’s beauty through orchestral melodies.

Each year, Samsung reimagines “Over the Horizon” with a new theme to express its brand philosophy through music. Following a traditional Korean orchestra in 2024 and a big band jazz interpretation in 2025, the 2026 edition conveys a message of sustainability through the rich harmonies of a full orchestra. Released ahead of the unveiling of the new Galaxy S series on February 25 (PST), the piece illustrates both the grandeur and delicacy of nature — portraying a harmonious coexistence between technology and the planet.

Los Angeles-based composer and pianist Eunike Tanzil is credited with the music and arrangement for the 2026 edition of “Over the Horizon.” Known for her lyrical melodies and expressive harmonies, she first drew Samsung’s attention in February 2024 with her reinterpretation of the theme on social media.

In her arrangement, Tanzil translates inspiration from nature into music. The majestic opening — led by brass and horns — evokes towering mountains, while smooth legato strings in the middle section recall the calm sea. She also incorporates the angklung, a traditional Indonesian instrument, into the Western orchestral setting to create a distinctive harmony. Reflecting on this creative decision, she said, “Blending instruments with different identities was an enjoyable challenge and became a meaningful chapter in my musical journey.”

“Over the Horizon 2026” was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performed the piece, adding depth and resonance to the melody. Producer and engineer Jonathan Allen used Dolby Atmos technology to create an immersive listening experience, while careful microphone placement enhanced the natural sense of space.

Watch the “Over the Horizon 2026” videos below to see its message of sustainability brought to life.

Each year, Samsung reinvents “Over the Horizon,” crafting new arrangements that reflect the company ‘s commitment to innovation. In 2024, the theme embodied the convergence of tradition and modernity through a gugak, or traditional Korean music, orchestra. For 2025, the vibrant tempo of big band jazz weaves the journey of One UI into the passage of time and the rhythm of everyday life. This rendition evokes an ideal day and a hopeful future, brought to life through vivid instrumental combinations and lively grooves.

The 2025 arrangement was created by Los Angeles-based pianist and composer Jacob Mann, with recording and mastering in Dolby Atmos overseen by engineer Will Kennedy.

Mann infused the piece with his unique interpretation of the “rhythm of the day,” shaping the composition to reflect the natural progression of time.

“I divided the course of a day into sections to convey the anticipation of tomorrow over the horizon. The music begins with the soft piano melodies of the morning and transitions to the vibrant energy of a night out in the city, featuring instruments like saxophones, brass and trumpets,” he explained behind the scenes . “Creating this piece felt like playing in a sandbox as a child, giving me the freedom to explore various inspirations on the piano and connect all the sections to flow naturally around the main melody.”

To bring Mann’s vision to life, Kennedy created an immersive recording environment that highlighted the essence of big band jazz. Using carefully optimized microphones and strategically placed speakers, he was able to capture a raw, authentic sound that makes the listener feel as if they are part of the performance.

In 2011, Samsung Electronics first unveiled “Over the Horizon.” Every year since, the song has evolved with a new message. Under the theme “Sound from Nature,” this year’s version combines classical instruments with instruments used in “Gugak,” traditional Korean music. By artfully fusing tradition and modernity, this piece symbolizes a journey toward the future.

Released on January 16, 2024, “Over the Horizon” features the Seoul National University Gugak Orchestra led by music director Won il, who is known for overseeing the music at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. The track was recorded in Dolby Atmos and fine-tuned in collaboration with award-winning sound director Byeong Joon Hwang. “Music made with traditional instruments extends beyond the traditional pentatonic scale. In this version of ‘Over the Horizon,’ we tried to capture the concept of embracing tradition, modernity and the future,” said music director Won il. “As a result, we incorporated various musical expressions, including sevenths and chromatic scales.”

Sound director Byeong Joon Hwang, who won a Grammy Award for music production and recording,1 emphasized the unique sounds of Gugak in his work on “Over the Horizon.”

“Gugak is a music genre that evokes the beauty of nature, such as the blowing wind and flowing water, so it can sound very unfamiliar and raw to those who haven’t heard it before,” explained Hwang. “Classical music typically uses a lot of reverberation, and to compensate for this, we tried our best to create an optimal sound while recording in a concert hall with plenty of reverberation,” he said.

An all-new interpretation of “Over the Horizon” from SUGA of 21st century pop icons BTS was released today. ‘Over the Horizon 2022 Produced by SUGA of BTS’ is available to listen on Samsung Electronics’ social channels. Following the great success of his first remix at last year’s Galaxy Unpacked, SUGA has put an upbeat, positive new spin on Samsung’s signature musical theme “Over the Horizon” again for 2022.

Since the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S2 in 2011, when “Over the Horizon” was first debuted, Samsung has collaborated with several artists to reimagine its musical theme and create a signature sound that motivates people to challenge their limits. Globally known for his record producing ability, SUGA is the first artist to remix the song twice on top of producing a tune for the new editions of the Galaxy foldables.

SUGA’s goal when working on the ‘Over the Horizon 2022 Produced by SUGA of BTS’ was to encourage people to look forward to a bright future and think about what excitement is waiting ‘over the horizon.’ Subsequently, the new remix is all about positivity and brightness, and was composed so that when people hear it, they feel hopeful and upbeat.

From its origins as a rock-themed ringtone, the updated versions have put a variety of unique spins on the original theme, including new age, orchestral pop, fusion jazz and even a Nordic orchestra inspired spin. Much like the Galaxy ecosystem, “Over the Horizon” is constantly being updated to reflect what is happening in the world, and the partnerships forged with artists invited to remix the theme reflect the spirit of openness and collaboration that underline the Galaxy philosophy.

As excitement builds for the launch of the new Galaxy foldables, Samsung is delighted to invite SUGA to return to the mixing desk to create an all-new version and music video for ‘Over the Horizon 2022 Produced by SUGA of BTS.’

In addition, ‘Over the Horizon 2022 Produced by SUGA of BTS’ will be available as a ringtone through an upcoming software update on Galaxy devices.*

For more than a decade, Samsung Electronics’ ringtone “Over the Horizon” has empowered users and musicians alike to put their own unique spin on the classic tune. With each new edition of the Galaxy S series comes an opportunity for contemporary artists to remix the song to reflect the current mood of an ever-changing world.

For the release of the Galaxy S22, Samsung has gone even further. For the first time, “Over the Horizon” is debuting alongside an animated film, blending the artistic expression of both a world-renowned musician and a visual artist to capture the feelings of today. The latest version, themed “New World,” breathes new life into a post-pandemic world reimagined through jazztronica music and heartfelt illustrations.

LA-based musician Kiefer Shackelford is a pianist and producer known for his cross-genre, hip-hop-influenced aesthetic and jazzy electronic sound.

“’Over the Horizon’ was a genuinely enjoyable experience for me,” said Shackelford. “A great roster of musicians has been a part of the Samsung Galaxy signature ringtone, which gave me the impression that Samsung is looking for some solid music, not just any other ringtone. You have a five to ten-second opportunity to bring a spark to everyone’s day, and I hope this hopeful, optimistic and wistful melody does the trick.”

Bringing Shackelford’s music to the screen are illustrations from fellow Grammy-nominated artist and producer Phil Beaudreau. His sketches draw viewers into a familiar world that has shaken off the dust of the pandemic. His warm, silhouetted characters evoke nostalgia for a time when we were free to interact and smile freely, as people dribble basketballs, run through parks and connect without fear. All of this plays out in front of an animated Shackelford and his piano, his jazzy chords bringing the whole scene to life.

The 2022 version of “Over the Horizon” envisions a world where we emerge from the pandemic better than we were before — remembering what we’ve learned, reaching out for new connections and ready to rebuild. Paired with the new Galaxy S22 devices, it’s a powerful message. While the Galaxy S22 gives you the power and freedom to shape your world, the latest take on “Over the Horizon” encourages us to make that world our best one yet.

In the video below, hear from SUGA about how and why he reimagined the song that has been compelling users to explore endless possibilities for the past decade.

In our increasingly plugged-in world, it can be easy to forget to take a moment every now and then to stop and smell the roses. Inspired by the simplicity of time spent outdoors and the calming sounds of nature, Samsung’s latest “Over the Horizon” remix is a fully acoustic version of the company’s signature sound designed to help bring you closer to the beauty of the world around us.

With each new generation of Galaxy devices comes a fresh new take on the “Over the Horizon” theme, and at the core of this year’s version is the power of nature itself. In order to capture the harmonious working of the natural world in all its glory, Samsung placed monochords in various natural locations in order to harness the power of nature for music.

Powered by the natural force of running water, the monochords operate thanks to a rotor- and pulley-based mechanism. As the mechanism rotates, it triggers the monochords to pluck their respective strings in the correct order. The resulting musical refrain has the unique characteristic of having been played solely by the force of nature.

On top of the monochord melody, Samsung also emphasized sounds like running water and chirping birds and kept the use of electronic elements to a minimum in order to help maximize the listener’s connection with the relaxing sounds of nature.

To complement the soothing, back-to-nature vibe of this remix, Samsung produced an accompanying video made up of relaxing footage of the natural world in all its glory. From calm woodland groves to awe-inspiring coastal vistas, the video showcases the true beauty of nature as well as the force of it in action as it powers the monochords. Check out the latest remix of “Over the Horizon” along with its tranquil music video above.

Now, Samsung is celebrating the smartphone series’ 10th anniversary with an “Over the Horizon” update that features a deeply touching sound – and an even deeper message.

This year’s take on “Over the Horizon” was inspired by the beauty of the oceans – evoking the seas’ vast scale and indescribable majesty through a combination of soothing synthesizers, strings and woodwinds. The new ringtone’s debut video underscores the importance of ocean conservation, and at the same time visualizes how Samsung explored a number of innovative technologies when developing its latest Galaxy devices.

Filmed off the shore of Sipadan Island in Malaysia, the video follows Ai Futaki, a renowned conservationist and Guinness World Record-holding freediver, as she explores waters that are teeming with all manner of marine life. Ai’s dive was shot by acclaimed nature filmmakers James Brickell and Simon Enderby. The new “Over the Horizon” arrangement was composed by Academy Award-winning composer Steven Price and performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra at London’s famed Abbey Road Studios.

On June 20, at the final round of the competition held at the Royal Concert Hall in Amsterdam, the title of “Best Ringtone in the Netherlands” was awarded to a group of sixth-grade students from Ichthusschool, an elementary school in the city of Nijkerk. The winning ringtone was chosen by a jury of professionals for its simple structure, engaging melody and peaceful atmosphere. The five shortlisted melodies were performed by a special ensemble of the Metropole Orkest, a world-famous and Grammy award-winning jazz and pop orchestra.

Every year, Samsung invites a new contributor from a diverse portfolio of famous composers, musicians and orchestras to re-arrange “Over the Horizon”. This is the first time that elementary school students have remodeled the signature ringtone of the Samsung Galaxy smartphone range. With Queen Máxima of the Netherlands as one of the project’s ambassadors, the ‘Digital Composing in Class’ competition received a wealth of media attention in its native country, with more than 110 articles published. The competition is an initiative supported by the Méér Muziek in de Klas (“More Music in the Classroom”) Foundation and Samsung Electronics Benelux.

Innovating Music Education with Digital Technology

The contest provided 36 workshops on digital composition to over 1000 students from all 12 provinces of the Netherlands, where students worked in groups to create their take on “Over the Horizon”. The children composed their own ringtones based on several melodies recorded by the Metropole Orkest. Using a special music composing program on smart tablets, students put together ringtones using their own ideas and imagination, adding rhythm instrument accents and their own lyrics – both sung and spoken – to one of the melodies. Providing the students with useful worksheets and instruction cards, the students were encouraged to harness their own creativity in this exercise combining both digital and analogue composition methods.

“The digital revolution is shifting the world we currently live in. This also changes the skills that the 21st Century demands of our children.” said Menno van den Berg, President of Samsung Benelux. “For years, Samsung has been pushing for innovative education in Dutch classrooms. Together with the Méér Muziek in de Klas Foundation, we have enjoyed innovating music education over the past few months. It was inspiring to see children working with so much enthusiasm. The final festival in the Royal Concert Hall was the icing on the cake.”

Arranged and recorded by Grammy Award-winning artist Jacob Collier using 16 different instruments, the latest version of “Over the Horizon,” Samsung’s brand sound, is at once optimistic, rhythmic and harmonic.

Working with just six notes, Collier explained in an interview that the most enjoyable part of the arrangement process was organizing the ways in which the melody could emerge unexpectedly.

The song’s music video, like the melody itself, is just as kinetic, having employed a cutting-edge motion control camera to create a smooth and continuous ‘one-man band’ effect. “I had never seen anything like it,” said Collier. “I was so excited to jump into this and create this multi-Jacob environment.”

Preloaded on the Galaxy S8, Collier’s version of the ringtone complements the phone’s new design language to enable a singular, seamless user experience.

The word ‘rhythm’ is derived from the Greek term ‘rhein’, meaning ‘to flow’. It’s created by the flow of all existing relationships of our present world interconnecting and reacting with one another. A device and its user act in the same way. The new Galaxy S8 seeks to create a unique rhythm created by constant free-flowing interactions of visual, tactile, and auditory senses coming together as a single experience.

Over the Horizon 2017

Just as visual design embodies an era, sound design also carries the essence of its time. The signature six-note sound of Samsung Electronics’ mobile devices, Over the Horizon, also aims to manifest the yearnings and changes of our current age. This simple melody possesses an infinite range of variations depending on the changes in sound and beat. Every year, Over the Horizon has been reborn to capture the keywords of the year through collaborations with artists. We introduce the creative workings of Jacob Collier, who was the partnering artist for the sounds of Over the Horizon 2017.

Millennial Artist, Jacob Collier

Jacob Collier is the representative artist of the Millennial Generation. Able to play over thirty different instruments, he expresses his unique inner world through musical illustrations that incorporates various genres.

Jacob’s characteristic style of playing many instruments simultaneously while immersing free-form rhythm to the regular beat of a metronome is synonymous to the brand-new interface of the Galaxy series of 2017 that provides a wide range of user experiences through connection and fusion.

Rhythm and Energy Flowing from 16 Live Instruments

From the base melody and its annual variations of the previous Over the Horizon, Jacob added in his own style to create a new tune. Jacob personally brought and played sixteen instruments and recorded it live, completing Over the Horizon 2017. This track combines the sensitivity of modern jazz and the trendy rhythms of dance, together exuding a free and fresh energy.

“Six notes was by far the smallest amount of material I have worked with, but was also the most fun.” – Jacob Collier

As Jacob said, the same six notes flow through a stream of different variations in instruments and multi-layered vocals that offer listeners a one-of-a-kind experience.

All New Ringtones for Galaxy S8

Auditory memory lasts five to six times longer than visual memory. That is why sound is a crucial component among the unified experiences that Galaxy S8 seeks to provide. Even the visual experiences of Galaxy S8 have been reinterpreted with a musical approach to give a comprehensive and unified user experience, from its renewed UI design, icons, wallpapers, to the overall look and mood exuding from its materials.

Samsung X DJ Soulscape

Ringtones for Galaxy S8

Sound design connecting you to the Galaxy S8 throughout your day, experience Galaxy S8’s new ringtones merging with the visual mood.

Modern musician R. Murray Schafer notes that “When we go to sleep, our perception of sound is the last door to be closed and it is also the first to open when we awaken.” Just as we awake with the brightening sound of a smartphone alarm and drift away to sleep with the gentle caress of our favorite tunes, our sense and perception of sound is more closely integrated in the intricate fabric of our sensible lives than any other sensory stimulation.

Our senses have grown weary over time with the excess of noise from our cities. We, at Samsung Electronics hope that users will be delighted by our mobile sounds, welcoming its tunes as bearers of good news.

Each generation of Samsung’s Galaxy devices comes preloaded with a fresh new take on “Over the Horizon”, Samsung’s signature, six-note groove. To craft this year’s rendition, Samsung teamed up with Grammy Award-winning artist Jacob Collier – a leading light among millennial musicians – to compose a tune that’s as unique and inventive as the devices themselves.

Playful, upbeat and familiar, “Over the Horizon” has served as Samsung Galaxy devices’ default ringtone for six years now. For each new rendition, Samsung has fleshed out the six iconic notes within a different musical genre, producing melodies that have been at times funky, rockin’, orchestral and smooth – wholly distinct, yet instantly recognizable.

Like the musical prodigy himself, Jacob’s interpretation of “Over the Horizon” is multifaceted, and mixes elements of contemporary jazz, pop and dance beats to craft an energetic sound that straddles genres.

This will come as no surprise to those familiar with the young artist, who, at just 22 years of age, has already mastered more than 20 different instruments and garnered worldwide critical acclaim for his inventive, self-made videos, unique sound and award-winning arrangements.

As you can see in the music video below, Jacob brought much of the same artistic innovation to “Over the Horizon”.

Jacob arranged and recorded his version of Samsung’s brand song himself, employing a total of 16 different instruments that are harmonized in the video by a veritable ensemble of Jacobs. The video, like the song itself, is highly kinetic, having utilized a cutting-edge motion control camera to create a seamless ‘one-man band’ effect.

Together, the diverse selection of instruments, which includes drums, a bass guitar and a cowbell, composes a sound that’s rhythmic, melodic and teeming with youth and optimism.

Samsung’s latest take on “Over the Horizon” will make its debut with the release of the new Galaxy smartphone.

The song of a bird just outside the window, her voice from the other side of the phone, the familiar humming of a loved one… our day to day is filled with sounds that reverberate in our hearts and minds. When we hear those sounds again, no matter how long time has lapsed, we are flooded with memories.

The sound of an air conditioner, an oven turning on, the ring of a smartphone… all of these digital sounds also become a part of your daily routine and naturally a part of your memory. We here at Samsung Electronics also consider acoustic resonance as an important factor of the user experience, as such our products are imbued with a distinct sound.

Come join us on a familiar path where we focus on the sound of our products.

* This content is better experienced with earphones or speaker.

Samsung Brand Sound

The theme of Samsung Electronics’ products can be summed up as ‘Over the Horizon’ for mobile devices and ‘Beyond the Horizon’ for home appliances – looking toward the challenges of the future with passion and anticipation. Although the melody may sound different the nuances of both share a subtle similarity. Both are neutral and positive attitude while retaining a medium tempo with 4 to 6 melodies.

These two simple melodies carry a long way, especially when applied to our products. Let’s look at a few examples.

Over the Horizon

Over the Horizon has been the sound for Samsung Electronic mobile devices since 2012 for a better future in our daily life. It’s used for the Default Ringtone, Message Tone, Advertisements, Music Videos and other various media. We’ve also collaborated with musicians to expand this melody in diverse ways.

Samsung Galaxy S7

As the smartphone is probably the most used and closely kept device ever developed, it is vital that even the smallest functions have a corresponding sound and synchronize with the UX design principles.

No two are the same. Likewise, a brand should have its own unique acoustics. The sonic experience with a brand is a vital asset and an intricate part of the total brand experience.

Even the most fleeting sound bites have been evaluated many time over to create a fun yet memorable brand experience.

With the release of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge on March 11, Samsung also released a 2016 version of its brand sound “Over the Horizon,” this time radically re-imagined by Swedish pop-funk group Dirty Loops. The new version is a fun and jazzy new take on the Galaxy’s signature sound.

Want to know more about how the group and the track’s producer created it? Then read on, and check out the video below.

“Dirty Loops’ music style is a mix of everything we’ve ever listened to, which is a lot actually,” said Jonah Nilsson, Dirty Loops’ lead singer and keyboardist. “So I think there is something in there for everybody to enjoy.”

Nilsson added, “Usually when we make songs we have a whole song with a lot of notes to play with but this time we only got six notes to play with. The ‘Over the Horizon’ song has been a lot of fun for us.”

To some extent, the Galaxy brand sound is unique in terms of the way people listen to it. After all, most people do not listen to a brand sound in quite the same way as they would, say, listen to their favorite songs.

“The biggest challenge with this project was going from the normal studio situation where you record for headphones or a big stereo system to instead recording for smartphone speakers,” said Henrik Linder, the act’s bassist. “It was quite a challenge.”

The track comes pre-loaded on all Galaxy S7 and S7 edge phones, so users can take a listen to it using the Music app. Samsung and Dirty Loops hope “Over the Horizon” new pop-fuelled sound will help to increase the sound’s appeal.

“My approach to mixing is a very musical one,” said Simon Petrén, the track’s producer and mastering engineer. “I’m a pianist myself, so I strive to find all those details and emphasize them. And in Dirty Loops’ case, you can tell that is a lot of detail.”

Check out the full version of Dirty Loops’ take on “Over the Horizon” here:

Starting with the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, the 2016 version of “Over the Horizon”, a Samsung Galaxy brand sound, is coming to this year’s Galaxy devices. And thanks to Swedish jazz-funk outfit Dirty Loops it’s the danciest, poppiest version yet.

Now, users of new Galaxy devices can select this new interpretation of “Over the Horizon” as their ringer or alarm.

The sound is as playful and adventurous as Dirty Loops—and as creative and full of potential as the latest lineup additions to the Galaxy family.

Users can also listen to it in full via the device’s Music app. If you simply cannot wait, you can check out the new version of “Over the Horizon” here:

Galaxy users may be familiar with the six timeless “Over the Horizon” notes. But although the latest version remains recognizable, it is at the same time very different. This time around, drums rattle and horns flare, and are followed by a soft, syncopated piano. The final result is a unique reinterpretation of a sound that has defined Galaxy devices for the past six years.

In addition, for the first time, Samsung’s iconic theme has gotten a few lyrics, as Dirty Loops singer Jonah Nilsson calls out: “create the future,” “inspired” and, of course, “over the horizon.” The group also added solos for keyboard, drums, horns and bass, further enriching its upbeat version.

Dirty Loops has won critical praise for its jazz and funk inspired pop since 2008, when Henrik Linder, Aron Mellergardh and Jonah first formed the group. Its creative re-imagining of big pop hits got tongues wagging in the music world, and the debut album Loopified was released in 2014.

Everyone who has ever owned a Galaxy smartphones knows that six-note groove that comes preloaded and serves as the default ringer on the popular devices: “Over the Horizon”, the official brand song of Samsung Galaxy. Smooth yet spritely, “Over the Horizon” has greeted Galaxy owners for five years—always familiar, and yet changing every year.

Evolving with Each New Galaxy S Series Smartphone

Originally composed by Samsung’s Principal Designer Josh Joongsam Yun in 2011 for the Galaxy S II, “Over the Horizon” has evolved over the years, getting lighter in 2012, and getting a tinge of rock and electric guitar in 2013 and 2014.

For 2015, “Over the Horizon” went orchestral for the Galaxy S6, as Jamie Christopherson led a recording of the tune in Nashville with the 40-piece Nashville String Machine, which was then mixed by Mixing Engineer Al Schmitt at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles.

Going Loopy for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge

Since starting in 2008, Swedish trio Dirty Loops has won critical acclaim from around the world for their creative and fresh approach pop, infusing it with jazz, funk and a host of influences. And now Samsung has collaborated with them to reimagine an exciting new version of “Over the Horizon”.

How will Dirty Loops interpret the iconic tune? The world will find out when the new Galaxy smartphones go on sale in March 11. But if you cannot wait, you can check out these three videos of Dirty Loops in the studio, practicing their chops—and if you listen closely, you might get a taste of what’s to come.

This familiar tune is instantly recognizable. Even non-Galaxy users have certainly heard this tune at least once or twice on a subway or bus. The melody, known as Over the Horizon, is the default ringtone of the Samsung smartphone.

When the Galaxy smartphone is turned on for the first time, Over the Horizon is the only music stored in the music library. The jingle can be used as a ringtone, as a sound when the phone turns on or off as well as a basic notification alert for messages. But this musical arrangement is not just an audio file stored in the phone. Rather, it is a brand sound of Samsung Galaxy devices.

S Whistle

The Galaxy S6 remake of this brand sound shows how it has changed drastically over time. Have a listen to the latest arrangement.

Over the Horizon 2015

The Galaxy S6 remix of Over the Horizon has a rich sound, characterized by a harmonious blend of string and woodwind instruments. This is a big change from the previous version, which incorporated an upbeat rhythm highlighted by digital attributes.

The latest variation of Over the Horizon was recorded by the Nashville String Machine. The composition was then mixed by the Grammy award-winning recording engineer Al Schmitt at Capitol Studios in LA. The deep, harmonious tune performed by the 40-piece orchestra represents the elegant, dazzling design and upgraded performance of the Galaxy S6.

So, when did Over the Horizon become the brand sound of the Galaxy devices?

Samsung was aware of the importance of having a signature sound for its product in 2011. When Joong-sam Yun, Senior Designer at IT & Mobile Communications, was assigned the task, he brainstormed ways to express Samsung Electronics’ Vision 2020 motto, Inspire the World, Create the Future, in the form of music.

Now, let’s take a look at what a brand sound is all about.

The melodic series of dings of Intel’s brand sound make it a well-known tune that just about anyone could instantly recognize. The same rings true for the famous “ba-da-ba-ba-bah” of McDonald’s jingle.

While images are easily recognized, they are just as easily forgotten. On the contrary, sounds are remembered for longer periods of time. Therefore, the brand sound is as important as, if not more important than, the brand logo. As such, most global brands now have their own brand sounds.

There are three attributes that brand sounds must possess. First, is the brand sound easily remembered at once? Second, does the brand sound fit the brand image? Third, can the brand sound be altered to reflect changing trends?

Members of the design team created a variety of draft tunes. Then, they surveyed approximately 900 employees of the Global Design Center. As a result, Over the Horizon, made up of six notes, elicited the most positive reaction.

“Each note has its own special purpose. The introduction provides a friendly and well-balanced ambiance. The syncopation of the leap of the tune in the following notes conveys passion with a futuristic sound. The last note represents the ceaseless challenging spirit of Samsung Electronics,” Yoon said.

The basic tune of Over the Horizon has not necessarily changed over the years, but rather has evolved as the Galaxy S has expanded from one model to the next. The version installed on the Galaxy S6 is the fourth edition of the song, following those of the Galaxy S II, Galaxy S III, and Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S5.
