At CES 2016, a global consumer technology tradeshow held in Las Vegas, the Internet of Things (IoT) was at the top of the agenda. Against this backdrop, Samsung Electronics unveiled a variety of products and technologies that enable consumers to enjoy the IoT in their daily lives, under the theme of “In Sync With Real Life.”

Samsung Newsroom spoke with BK Yoon, President and CEO of Samsung Electronics, who leads the direction of the consumer electronics (CE) business within the company, to talk about Samsung’s vision for the age of IoT and CE business strategy for this year.

Q: Consumers are still largely unfamiliar with the IoT. How should we see the IoT era?

BK Yoon: The IoT will definitely change our home life; however, I believe the greatest change will be witnessed in the manufacturing sector. Under the IoT value creation structure, manufacturers collect data and give feedback after analyzing it, improving and developing factories, homes and societies.

For example, the introduction of the Family Hub Refrigerator at CES 2016 will serve as a milestone in improving the experience in the kitchen. Because the refrigerator multitasks, it will allow you to communicate with family members, access news briefings, find recipes and enjoy entertaining content. Moreover, it will even let you monitor your cooktop and oven remotely during the cooking process, through connectivity with all devices in the home, bringing a great change to the kitchen experience.

As such, we are convinced that TVs and refrigerators with IoT technology will improve the quality of life for all consumers.

When things communicate with each other, and more so when things communicate with people based on the IoT, unimaginable value will be created.

Q: Samsung emphasizes the IoT in daily life. How does Samsung plan to make this happen?

BK Yoon: Samsung introduced innovative IoT technologies to the products that consumers use frequently and feel familiar with: TVs and refrigerators.

For instance, Samsung unveiled SUHD TVs as an IoT hub at CES 2016. Connected with IP cameras, the TV can be used to monitor activities inside and outside your home. Additionally, you can easily adjust your home’s lighting and AV devices to suit your TV content.

Meanwhile, the Family Hub Refrigerator is equipped with a 21.5-inch touchscreen on the exterior of one door to allow you to access useful information for food storage, communicate with family members and enjoy entertaining content.

Building on this momentum, Samsung plans to take the lead in the age of IoT by connecting all home appliances by 2020. As a result, it will help consumers to lead enjoyable everyday lives.

Q. Technological compatibility, not just among Samsung devices but also with other manufacturers’ devices, is critical to the IoT. What strategy does Samsung have to address that matter?

BK Yoon: Samsung employs an open platform strategy. By adopting an open platform, we promote compatibility even with products made by other companies, so that all devices around the world can be interconnected.

Q. What is the strategy of Samsung for the TV business in 2016?

BK Yoon: Samsung’s TV business has been number one for the last 10 years. Building upon this achievement, we will continue our efforts to deliver premium products, differentiate design, create special user experiences and offer greater content.

This year, we will keep our leadership position in the TV market with second-generation Quantum dot technology that enhances the color gamut by more than 20 percent. We will also release premium design TVs that are more than just a product, but also a timeless objet d’art.

Along with that, a new UX will be introduced to upgrade content accessibility and experience.

Q. What is the strategy for digital appliances in 2016?

BK Yoon: This year, Samsung will continue its endeavor to make products that satisfy consumers through thoughtful innovation that cares about consumers, along with more active marketing initiatives.

In the high-end segment, Samsung will solidify its leadership position in the global market with premium products that fulfill the needs of consumers. Meanwhile, in the mid-tier segment, we will launch region-specific products. We will also double our efforts in the B2B system air-conditioning products market.

Samsung has maintained the number one position for the last four years in the global refrigerator market. In the washing machine market, we have been introducing innovative products, such as the front load washer with Samsung AddWash and the Samsung activ dualwash top load washer.

Samsung Electronics is presenting the latest in the evolution of cutting-edge home appliances and the Internet of Things (IoT) in its 2,600-square-meter exhibition space at CES 2016, the world’s largest consumer electronics show, which began January 6 in Las Vegas.

Visitors to the hall are greeted by a constantly moving display made from 44 SUHD TVs. The up-and-down movement of the TVs suggests how the human experience expands through TV, a window of the world.

As it did last year, Samsung has an IoT section at the center of the exhibition site, this time under the message of “In Sync with REAL Life”. By doing so, Samsung encourages visitors to participate, showing them practical, real-world examples of how the IoT works. The IoT section is comprised of six themed booths, each offering a direct experience in how IoT technology, combined with Samsung products, can transform and improve modern life.

The six booth themes are as follows:

IoT Hub TV (SUHD TV)

This booth demonstrates how TV is at the center of the expanding IoT ecosystem, giving people total control of their devices from a huge screen and an easy-to-use interface. In addition, this booth offers a variety of home security solutions to safeguard your home.

Family Hub Refrigerator

As Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator is the new IoT-powered appliance, this booth allows people to experience how smart home appliances are changing family life. With a Full-HD, 21.5-inch screen, Family Hub helps families improve food management and family communication. In addition, with Family Hub Refrigerator, people can stream music or TV content from their Samsung Smart TVs directly to the Family Hub’s LCD screen, turning the kitchen into a more entertaining place.

Gear S2 with Galaxy TabPro S

SmartThings allows you to monitor your car, control your home appliances on the road and watch a collaboration with Samsung C&T for wearable devices.

In addition to those booths, many other cutting-edge electronics are on display at Samsung’s exhibition site for CES 2016. Samsung is showcasing SUHD TVs with Quantum dot display, along with the curved monitor CF591—with an 1800R radius curvature, it has the tightest curvature rate in the world, making it very comfortable for the eyes. Samsung is also displaying its new soundbar for the first time, the HW-K950, which offers theater-like 3D sound and 5.1.4-channels system.

Furthermore, Samsung is showcasing its Black Stainless design of kitchen appliances, which offers a classy, dark look for the home. Samsung’s other innovative home appliances, including AddWash (washing machine), Chef Collection, POWERbot (robot vacuum cleaner), and Flex Duo with dual-door oven, is also on display.

Samsung has also prepared an exhibition zone for the latest in mobile device technologies. Two new editions of the Samsung Gear S2 Classic are on-hand, featuring new materials and colors, along with the Galaxy TabPro S—a Windows 10-based tablet that delivers all the benefits of both a tablet and laptop, at the same time.

A diverse range of new, consumer-ready memory products are being exhibited, too. They include the T3 (a premium 2TB external SSD, to be released in February), the 950 PRO M.2 (a superfast Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe*) M.2 form factor SSD with vertical NAND (V-NAND) technology), and the 128GB PRO Plus SD, along with microSD memory cards.

There is also a zone demonstrating the accessibility-related features of Samsung products, including SUHD TVs, for people with disabilities. Samsung won a CES 2016 Best of Innovation Award in the Accessible Tech category with this feature. Voice Guidance is a voice command system, while Enlarge and High Contrast modes configure the screen for easier use by people with vision impairments. These TVs also offer Multi Output Audio (so one person can use headphones while watching TV without disabling the audio output from the TV speakers) and Learn Remote Control mode (to provide help using a remote control).

The man raced across the rooftop, desperately trying to get to the helicopter, as bullets flew from all directions. But just before he reached safety, an explosion destroyed the helicopter, along with much of the roof. Game over. “Pretty sweet,” said a grinning French journalist, as his character plummeted to a fiery death.

One part of CES 2016 gets visitors really excited—gaming devices. And Samsung’s three-monitor ultra-wide setup for the EA game Battlefield 4 has gotten a particularly enthusiastic response. Not only are there three monitors connected in a row to expand the horizontal field of view, but Samsung devised this setup using its new 27-inch, 1800R curvature monitors, creating an arcing, smooth viewing surface, for the most immersive viewing experience yet.

For gamers, getting immersed into the action is the whole point of the fun. So it is essential to have a monitor that can keep up with the intense demands of today’s games, without lagging or stuttering, and completely absorb players. Samsung’s new curved monitors—the CF591, CF391, CF390 and CF 398—curve with a radius of 1.8 meters, the tightest curvature in the market. That curve helps to create a sense of surrounding the player, pulling them all the way into the action of the game.

“Sitting here, the edge of the screen is looking at you, instead of you having to look at it,” said one rep from an American gaming company, as he played EA’s Need for Speed on a 31.5-inch curved monitor. At the next monitor, another visitor was getting into EA’s NBA Live 16.

In addition to that curvature technology, each of Samsung’s gaming monitors helps prevent eye strain and fatigue with embedded flicker-free and Eye Saver technologies. The monitors are also supported by AMD FreeSync Technology Over HDMI^®, which synchronizes the screen refresh rate with users’ AMD graphics card frame rate, to reduce input latency, stutter and lag during gaming.

Together, these technologies impressed the visitors who streamed through the Samsung exhibition over the course of CES, with many calling Samsung’s 1800R monitors the most natural-feeling and immersive on the market for gaming.

Samsung also set up a special gaming room where visitors could play the games on the new 1800R monitors.

Dr. Hong, the President of Samsung SDS and the Head of its solution business, described Samsung’s devices and components, platforms and security solutions as the key ingredients that “bring ‘smarts’ to the everyday objects in our lives.”

During the keynote, Samsung presented new components like an ultra-thin and flexible high-capacity battery and the Bio-Processor, a powerful but extremely small all-in-one healthcare chip.

Dr. Hong also demonstrated the rapidly growing range of Samsung devices and appliances that are equipped to be true IoT hubs for the Smart Home of today, by working with the SmartThings ecosystem. Samsung’s new range of 2016 SUHD TVs, for example, can all be used as IoT hubs. The new Samsung Family Hub refrigerator, with its large 21.5-inch LED display, can be the center of grocery management, family sharing of notes and pictures and entertainment, and even makes it possible to check on your mobile device what’s in the fridge – thanks to its inbuilt cameras.

Openness, Interoperability, Collaboration

Dr. Hong said Samsung’s IoT strategy was to promote “openness, interoperability, and cross-industry collaboration”, because they were the underpinnings of IoT success.

Seamless connectivity of IoT devices was another important factor to ensure a good IoT experience, said Dr. Hong. Samsung is working with its industry partners in the Open Interconnect Consortium to build a truly open connectivity framework called IoTivity.

Samsung believes in an Open Partnership approach, and therefore presented another industry-first: the Samsung Smart Home Cloud API, which makes it possible to integrate any IoT-ready Samsung household appliance into any IoT ecosystem.

Focus on Security

The Internet of Things “is generating enormous amounts of data”, said Dr. Hong, which makes it crucial to develop “incredibly strong security solutions”. However, said Dr. Hong, “there can be only one owner of IoT data: our customers.”

He described Samsung’s progress in expanding its security platform for mobile devices, Samsung KNOX, and presented an equally best-in-class security solution for Smart TVs. Just like KNOX, this smart security solution provides protection that is hardwired into devices and appliances; it will first be used to make Samsung’s 2016 Smart TVs safe and ready for the Internet of Things.

Partnerships to Deliver IoT Value

Joined by partners from many different industries, Samsung showed how the Internet of Things is ready to bring immediate value to our lives. Dr. Hong and top executives from Microsoft corp.’s Windows and Devices Group, Goldman Sachs, BMW, serviced residence owner and operator the Ascott Limited, materials science firm Corning, and energy solutions provider Samsung SDI, demonstrated how Samsung devices and platforms can provide a much smarter environment to live and work in.

With a broad range of devices, platforms and services – from Smart Mobility and Samsung Pay to healthcare solutions using the Bio-Processor, and solutions that bring the Internet of Things to Smart Cities and Smart Nations – Samsung is ready to inject smarts in all aspects of our world. The expertise of Samsung SDS, meanwhile, helps companies to transform the quality of their production lines, output, logistics and maintenance services.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., today unveiled the newest SMART Signage and monitor line up, highlighting world’s thinnest bezel to bezel video wall and its new curved gaming monitors. Samsung is showcasing how visual displays will transform the entertainment, business and retail arenas of the future at its CES 2016 display product booths (11906, 11929 and 12429 in the LVCC Central Hall).

Razor-thin 1.4mm Bezel Video Wall

Samsung has amplified large-scale message presentation capabilities for business and retail customers with its new UHF-E (Extreme Narrow Bezel) video wall. Featuring a thin bezel-to-bezel design (0.9mm on the upper and left sides and 0.5mm the lower and right sides), the UHF-E is the world’s slimmest bezel video wall available. With minimal bezel interference, business customers can keep audiences focused on rich visual content rather than on the display itself.

Optimized for indoor applications, Samsung’s UHF-E video wall combines visual quality with the power of professional-grade digital signage. Each UHF-E display undergoes advanced factory tuning to maintain picture integrity and enhance resonance for viewers. An additional embedded ACM chipset adjusts picture content to meet specific color settings and maintains a uniform presentation. The durable UHF-E video wall is designed to perform 24/7, allowing uninterrupted content delivery in various conditions.

More Comfortable and Convenient Gaming Experience

Samsung is showcasing its newest curved gaming monitors (CF591, CF391, CF390 and CF398). Samsung’s LED Signage is designed with top-tier diodes across a range of fine pixel pitch configurations. Through this construction, large-screen LED Signage viewers can experience the same deep contrast, realistic picture quality and high brightness that they would expect from Samsung’s latest TVs.

The Electronics Shop of the Future

Samsung is showing how retail-oriented display technologies, including mirror and transparent OLED displays and ultra-slim bezel video walls, can elevate electronics shopping to a more convenient, informed and customized experience.

As customers enter the store, retailers can use mirror displays to interact and further drive point-of-purchase shopping. The displays’ reflectance (65 percent), high transmittance (90 percent) and frameless design offer retailer new avenues to immediately refine and deliver content from welcome messages to special limited-time offers.

Samsung’s 55-inch transparent OLED offers customers complete product visibility in an engaging and informative format. It also allows retailers to deliver demos and real-time promotional content with improved brightness (150nit), transparency (45 percent) and color presentation (Adobe RGB 100 percent).

CES 2016 is in full swing and there’s plenty to see and do at Samsung Electronics’ booth. Among the show’s areas of interest is the Samsung Galaxy Studio’s Gear VR Theater with 4D —a spot so popular, in fact, that there was already an exceptionally long line of eager attendees waiting to check it out when it opened this morning. So far, even it’s the first day of show, there have been about 10,000 visitors at the Galaxy Studio, with around 2,000 participating in the activity.

Samsung Newsroom was fortunate enough to participate in the activity firsthand and we were just as excited to experience Samsung’s latest endeavors in virtual reality entertainment. Needless to say, we were not let down.

As we anxiously waited to take our seats, high-energy music sounded throughout the North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, creating a lively atmosphere that complemented the neon that illuminated the Samsung Galaxy Studio. Not before long, we were showed to our seats—4D chairs that stretched out into a staggered semicircle overlooking the hubbub of the exhibition floor.

Following the directions of the assistants, we put on Samsung’s Gear VR headsets, not knowing what to expect next. In seconds, we were no longer in the middle of a tech exhibition, but were instead sitting in the front seat of a roller coaster train.

Soon, our chairs began to move in tandem with the video displayed on our headsets, and we couldn’t help but laugh in excitement as we felt the familiar jerk of the train as it moved along the wooden track below us. As we ascended to what felt like a rather terrifying height, we looked around in all directions, taking in the scenery of the surrounding wooded area and other amusement park rides that filled it. Unlike the traditional 4D theater experience in which viewers wear 3D glasses, this felt entirely new. It felt like we were really there.

Upon reaching the top, nervousness filled us while we looked down the drop. As we quickly veered through tight curves, excited chatter came from all directions.

An attendee sitting next to us shouted, “Look behind you!” Sure enough, there was an animated group of adrenaline junkies holding in their screams.

Another participant nearby told his friend, “It feels so real!” And it did—very, very real.

The lifelike experience ended when we made it safely to the platform and were then transported back to the Samsung Galaxy Studio. Although we hadn’t known what to expect, one thing had been made clear: Samsung’s Gear VR had completely upgraded the 4D experience.

In addition to the “Wooden Coaster” video, Samsung is also showcasing other immersive virtual content such as “Horror Maze” and “Surfing in Tahiti.”

With all the announcements made by Samsung at CES 2016 thus far, including its growing ecosystem of partners like Oculus as well as its efforts to expand its content of 360-degree videos, it’s certain that the company will continue to transform the way the world is entertained.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has announced its CES 2016 Booth, for the first time, features a “Future TV Zone” – an interactive showcase of the most forward thinking TV concepts the company has ever produced. The “Future TV Zone” is focused around Modular display technology, which allows for multiple screens in various shapes and sizes to join together to create an entirely customizable TV based on consumers’ lifestyle and the content they want to watch.

The “Future TV Zone” includes two design concepts that highlight the capabilities and possibilities of customization. One of the concepts features the world’s largest SUHD TV, a 170-inch display that utilizes the Modular display technology together. Samsung has created the ultimate life-sized video experience, to give the illusion of being inside the video.

To highlight the transformability of this technology, the transformable TV can change its shape based on the content it’s displaying. Whether users are watching the big game, a high action blockbuster, or the evening news, the transformable TV can retain different ratios to best fit the content on the screen. The TV can jump from a 16:9 screen ratio to a 21:9 screen, simply by splitting the screen into two parts and reassembling on the sides when you decide to watch a wide screen video like a movie.

Samsung’s Future TV Zone will be open during CES’ regular exhibition hours, from January 6-9 at the Booth #11906, in Tech East, LVCC, Central Hall.

Perhaps you wear the latest fitness tracker to keep up with your daily activity and caloric intake. Or maybe you don a classic timepiece to convey your sense of style. Designer Straps

In the past, Samsung delivered a more personalized wearable experience by teaming up with luxury brands and artists like Italian designer Alessandro Mendini. It continues to do so by collaborating with companies under the “Designed for Samsung” program to offer a variety of watch strap options.

This time around, the straps include ones by Colombo via della Spiga, the iconic brand expert in leather processing since 1955. The straps will be crafted in crocodile leather, a classic of Colombo, and will be completely handmade by skilled artisans.

Updated Faces

Samsung has continued to extend its partnerships with world-renowned artists to offer a colorful collection of new watch faces. These new designs feature artwork from Keith Haring, graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, cartoonist Jeremyville and pop artist Burton Morris. Other designs include the highly adored Peanuts characters. The fun, inspiring watch faces provide a more personalized wearable experience and allow consumers to easily express their personality with a simple twist of the bezel.

In addition to using the preset watch face designs, users can also unleash their creativity and generate their own with the Gear Watch Designer. This user-friendly tool helps semi or professional designers design, produce and distribute watch faces without the complexity of code scripting. With so many customization features, the Gear S2 is not just a smartwatch, but instead a fashion item that can be modified according to one’s mood, outfit of the day or even the season.

An App for Everyone

Earlier last year, Samsung launched its Tizen Software Development Kit (SDK) for the Gear S2 so that developers could more easily create enhanced standalone apps for the device. Moreover, in an effort to expand the smartwatch’s user capabilities even more, the company has partnered with additional developers to offer a wider variety of applications that appeal to multiple lifestyles.

Some of them, like the CNN and Bloomberg Gear S2 apps, utilize their own specialized watch face features, while others like eBay, ESPN, Uber and Voxer were designed to enhance the convenience of the device. By expanding the application ecosystem, and including a variety of apps that focus on news, health, traffic, banking and music, among others, the Gear S2 becomes a life necessity rather than a simple tech accessory.

A New Way to Pay and Extended Compatibility

Another feature that will improve the usability of the smartwatch is Samsung Pay, which will soon be available to Gear S2 users starting from the U.S. Samsung Pay’s technology, which utilizes Near Field Communication (NFC), offers consumers a convenient, safe way to pay virtually anywhere, right from their wrist.

Finally, the Gear S2 will be compatible with even more devices to extend accessibility to a wider range of mobile users. In addition to supporting Android devices, the wearable will be compatible with those running on iOS*.

At CES 2016, Samsung Electronics, Sinclair Broadcast Group, ONE Media, Pearl TV and TeamCast are demonstrating the broadcast and receiving capabilities of ATSC 3.0, the cutting-edge terrestrial TV standard. The demonstration includes reception of Ultra High Definition (UHD) High Dynamic Range (HDR) 4K content using ATSC 3.0 in a live transmission originating from a local broadcast TV station to a Samsung S-UHD TV with ATSC 3.0 receiver at the Samsung Electronics booth in the Las Vegas Convention Center. This demonstration is a product of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in June 2015 by Samsung, Sinclair and the Pearl TV partnership.

The over-the-air TV signal is radiated from a transmitter at Sinclair’s facility on Black Mountain near Las Vegas. With the help of Acrodyne Services and TeamCast, Sinclair converted a standby station transmission system using the exTra3.0, the very first ATSC 3.0 real-time exciter available today on the market and designed by TeamCast.

Samsung Electronics invites CES 2016 attendees in need of a break from the rigors of the show floor to unwind within the confines of a virtual basketball court or battlefield. As part of a unique interactive showcase, Samsung transformed some of its CES booths (11906, 11929 and 12429 in the LVCC Central Hall) into the Ultimate Gaming Room, highlighting the enhanced immersion and comfort of its new gaming monitors, featuring games from Electronic Arts Inc. Last year marked the 10th consecutive year that Samsung Electronics ranked as the leader in the global TV manufacturing industry. Yet, Hyun Suk Kim, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, explained that this is only the beginning—Samsung’s dedication to pioneering technology, design and the user experience will lead the TV industry in the next decade to come, too.

The past decade was one of multiple milestones for Samsung. The just-released 2016 SUHD TV features the world’s only cadmium-free, 10-bit Quantum dot display, providing the most true-to-life picture quality and colors ever offered by Samsung. SUHD with Quantum dot display is the latest in display technology, using microscopic particles just a few atoms in diameter to create brighter, more saturated and more accurate colors compared with other display materials currently in use. With a stunning brightness exceeding 1,000 nits, these SUHD televisions offer an unparalleled level of precision and brilliance. “I believe this technology will set a new precedent in the industry,” said Kim. “These SUHD TVs are harmonized by a world-first, bezel-less curved design that keeps the viewer’s attention focused on the screen’s captivating content.”

With the 2016 SUHD TV, the representative product of the new decade, Samsung is defining what the television is now and what it will be in the future. As such, Internet of Things (IoT) hub technology has also been applied to the television, allowing the device itself to connect with over 200 SmartThings-compatible devices and act as the controller for the entire smart home. Kim said that this new feature demonstrates Samsung’s commitment to making the TV seamlessly connected to the IoT-powered home, a budding trend that is expected to grow in the near future.

As television becomes a center of expansion for the IoT, its role in our everyday lives “will continue to evolve at a rapid pace,” Kim explained, as he discussed Samsung’s plans to continue leading the TV industry in the decade ahead. Some technologies that could potentially power this evolution will be highlighted in the interactive “Future TV Zone” at CES, a display of Samsung’s most forward-thinking and futuristic concept TVs. Among the devices that will be on display are Ultra Slim SUHD TVs only about a tenth-of-an-inch wide, a 170-inch SUHD TV, a transformable TV, as well as an 8K Curved SUHD TV.

Samsung Electronics unveiled its vision for 2016 during its press conference, at CES 2016. The company underlined the importance of innovation that makes a meaningful difference in people’s everyday lives, and showcased its focus on the Internet of Things (IoT) as an open platform, with SmartThings technology. Samsung also revealed the new bezel-less curved SUHD TVs with Quantum dot displays, the connected Family Hub refrigerator, its newest smartwatch – the Gear S2 Premium, and a large screen Windows tablet, the Galaxy TabPro S.

“Samsung has continuously worked to help people live smarter lives, and this year we have taken a huge step forwards with our diverse, IoT-enabled products and services,” said Tim Baxter, President and Chief Operating Officer of Samsung Electronics America. “We will continue to enhance consumers’ quality of life by listening to their needs and strengthening our ecosystem.”

Samsung delivered the press conference from a stage enhanced by its own display technology, using a large 18.3m x 4.8m curved screen, which the company designed and built using its own LED signage, to deliver immersive and ultra-realistic images of its products.

The Next Generation of Home Entertainment

Samsung unveiled its spectacular new line-up of SUHD TVs that feature unparalleled picture quality with Quantum dot display, the world’s first bezel-less curved design which is beautiful from every angle and the smartest user experience that makes it easy for consumers to access all their entertainment content in one place.

Samsung’s 2016 SUHD TVs feature the world’s only cadmium-free, 10-bit Quantum dot display, offering the most true-to-life picture quality, with stunning brightness, exceptional contrast and the most lifelike colors ever offered by Samsung. The future of display technology, Quantum dot display converts light into nearly any color in the visible spectrum without distortion or compromising the brightness level, delivering the optimum viewing experience for consumers, regardless of the lighting environment.

This year, all of the Samsung SUHD TVs will feature the ability to provide a premium high dynamic range (HDR) experience, with 1,000 nit HDR minimum for a higher level of contrast between light and dark images. New Ultra Black technology also significantly reduces light reflection, further enhancing picture quality with minimal glare.

Built on the Tizen operating system (OS), Samsung’s 2016 Smart TVs make it easier for consumers to discover and access all their favorite content and services, from TV and movies to games and program information, all in one place. The new Samsung Smart TV eliminates the need to juggle multiple remote controls. The Samsung Smart TV will automatically recognize the type of set-top box, game console, OTT box or home theater system that is connected to the TV. This allows users to control all of the external devices with the Smart Control remote — with no setup required.

All 2016 SUHD TVs feature IoT hub technology, developed by Samsung with SmartThings. The SUHD TV can connect with and control over 200 SmartThings compatible devices – whether it’s to see who is ringing the doorbell, lock the doors or turn off the lights – all from the TV.

Samsung also unveiled the latest additions to its audio product lineup, including the HW-K950 Soundbar, the company’s first to feature Dolby Atmos®, and the industry’s first soundbar package to include two Dolby Atmos®-enabled wireless rear speakers. The complete HW-K950 package delivers incredible 5.1.4-channel sound.

The company also revealed the first Ultra HD Blu-ray Player, the HDR-compatible UBD-K8500, which offers four times the resolution and 64 times higher color expression than conventional Blu-ray players. When paired with Samsung SUHD TV’s Quantum dot display, the new UHD Blu-ray player delivers a level of picture quality never before seen in the home. The UBD-K8500’s built-in upscaling technology enhances the picture quality from standard Blu-ray discs and DVDs, and consumers can also play CDs. The UBD-K8500 is available for pre-order now and for purchase in March 2016 in the U.S.

Intelligent Digital Appliances Transform the Kitchen

Samsung also revealed the new Family Hub Refrigerator, a new category of IoT technology applied home appliance which helps families to connect, and provides new ways to manage, shop and prepare food. Its centerpiece is a 21.5” Full HD LCD touchscreen, a digital command center for the connected home, which combines powerful performance with ground-breaking technology never before seen in a refrigerator.

The Family Hub’s Key capabilities include:

• Improved Food Management: Three built-in cameras take a photo of the inside of the refrigerator every time the door is closed so consumers can always see what they have wherever they go, via their smartphone. Samsung has also partnered with MasterCard to offer a seamless online shopping experience through the Family Hub Refrigerator. Using the app on the refrigerator’s touchscreen, consumers can easily find and purchase items from multiple retailers, directly from their kitchen, all finished with a single, simple checkout process that accepts U.S.-issued credit and debit cards.

• Family Communication Center: The Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator enables the family to write notes, post photos, share calendars and artwork, right on the refrigerator’s touchscreen, or using their smartphone if they are away.

• IoT Technology Enabled: As a connected Samsung product the Family Hub Refrigerator is also a truly dynamic and evolving product platform that will leverage the power of Samsung’s IoT services. For example, consumers will be able to check their home’s doors are locked and turn off the lights right from the Family Hub screen.
• Connected Entertainment: With the Family Hub Refrigerator’s built-in stereo speakers, people can stream their favourite music service, or TV content from their Samsung Smart TVs directly to the touchscreen, as well as connecting to their own Bluetooth speakers.

Breaking Barriers in Mobile Productivity and Wearable Technology

At the CES press conference, Samsung also introduced the Gear S2 classic with two new unique color variants—Rose Gold and Platinum—for a classic, timeless design. These new models reflect Samsung’s commitment to bringing more choice to its consumers with new material varieties, providing users with diverse options to express and match their style while highlighting its circular design and advanced functionality.

The Gear S2 will offer a secure mobile payments feature with Samsung Pay (available in the U.S. in 2016) and is expanding its compatibility to devices running on iOS to extend accessibility to a wider range of mobile users.

For a more personal and customizable experience, Samsung is also expanding its line of watch straps and watch face options. Samsung has partnered with exclusive designers, such as Colombo, on premium watch straps for the Gear S2, and has introduced fun and creative watch faces including Peanuts characters and artworks from Keith Haring, Jean-Michael Basquiat, Jeremyville and Burton Morris.

Samsung also announced the availability of a wide selection of additional apps – from eBay, ESPN, Uber, Voxer and more – to both the Gear S2 and Gear S2 classic.

In addition, Samsung unveiled a brand new mobile product category with the announcement of its Galaxy TabPro S, which combines Samsung’s world-class technology, powered by the Microsoft Windows 10 operating system together into a premium tablet. • More access to content – Streaming UHD movies and TV shows from providers such as Amazon, M-GO, and Netflix and accessing apps such as YouTube has gotten even easier. UHD technologies developed by NeuLion will also enable a selection of sporting events to stream UHD Consumers can also connect Samsung’s new Ultra HD Blu-ray Player via HDMI (2.0a) for access to UHD movies with HDR. Samsung’s First Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

Samsung also unveiled its first Ultra HD Blu-ray Player, the UBD-K8500, which is HDR compatible and offers four times the resolution and 64 times detailed color expression of a conventional Blu-ray player. It features a sleek, curved front design, and is available for pre-order now and for purchase in the U.S. in March 2016.

When paired with Samsung SUHD TV’s Quantum dot display, the new UHD Blu-ray player delivers a level of picture quality never before seen in the home. The UBD-K8500’s built-in upscaling technology enhances the picture quality from standard Blu-ray discs and DVDs, and consumers can also play CDs.

Samsung has partnered with Hollywood studios to ensure consumers have a selection of Ultra HD Blu-rays with astonishing HDR picture quality. This year, 20th Fox is slated to release more than 100 4K Ultra HD discs with HDR including films like The Martian, Peanuts, and among others.

Today there are more options for viewing content than ever—cable TV, over-the-top (OTT) services, video on demand (VOD) and more—and people’s homes have grown cluttered with devices, remote controls and complicated services. But the latest line of Samsung Smart TVs cuts through the clutter, simplifying the viewing experience even while making it more responsive and convenient.

“We wanted to fix that problem, so people don’t have to worry about what to tune in, what services to subscribe to,” said Won Jin Lee, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “It’s really about what do you want to watch, and what’s the best way to watch it, and how the service is rendered to you in the most convenient way possible.”

Samsung’s solution has been to pare everything down to a single, unified solution. “A single experience, single remote, and single access point,” said Lee.

Single experience refers to unifying how people experience TV watching, so it is the same, regardless of the source. These days, people enjoy watching content on a wide range of platforms, such as cable TV, gaming, VOD, OTT and more. But Lee noted how those platforms are often like silos, forcing consumers to choose their options, walling them off from the rest. Samsung’s goal with Smart TV was to break down those walls.

But unifying those services meant getting a wide range of companies to come together, often for the first time. Samsung spent months building partnerships and getting everyone on board. Lee in particular recognized Dish Network and Time Warner Cable for their cooperation. “This was the first time in the industry that MVPDs [multichannel video programming distributors] have chosen to work with a consumer electronics company in order to create this seamless and consistent experience,” Lee said.

The new Samsung Smart Control remote simplifies how people use their TVs and related services. Powered by Samsung’s Tizen platform, the Smart Control remote immediately recognizes set-top boxes, OTT boxes, Blu-ray players, game consoles and other connected devices. The Smart Control represents a major cleanup, greatly streamlining people’s homes.

Finally, the new Smart TVs offer a single access point, meaning people no longer have to learn and re-learn a different control system for each device they have connected to their TVs. Now all devices are presented to consumers in a simplified, uniform manner, controlled from one place.

The result was the Smart Hub, a new interface capable of bringing together all sorts of content and platforms seamlessly. Now consumers can search through their devices in a convenient and easy-to-use screen right on their TVs, on a customizable interface that offers their favorite entertainment selections.

“You want to have all those choices, but at the same time you want to be comfortable. It has to be simple, it has to be easy,” Lee said. Together, the Smart Hub user experience (UX) and Samsung Smart Control remote have simplified TV into a single entertainment solution. “This really takes the whole TV experience to a whole new level that has not been done before in the industry.”

Before the start of CES 2016, Samsung Electronics is launching a mobile application, called “Samsung CES”, equipped with beacon technology for the attendees of the annual trade show in Las Vegas. Once downloaded, the Samsung CES app will provide location-based information to visitors and offer additional background information on Samsung products seen on the show floor.

The Samsung CES app will send relevant news articles and interactive content directly to users, making it easier for visitors to access CES-related information. The app will alert users to Samsung events and activities at CES – including Samsung’s press conference and keynote – and deliver news and video clips from the Samsung Newsroom following each event.

CES visitors can download the mobile app by searching “Samsung CES” on Google Play and the iTunes Store, starting Jan. 5.

2016 Samsung SUHD TV with UHD Premium Certification by the UHD Alliance (UHDA)

Samsung Electronics has announced that its entire 2016 SUHD TV lineup has been awarded the UHD Premium Certification by the UHD Alliance (UHDA). The new certification is reserved for those products and services that comply with the organization’s newly announced performance standards for picture resolution, high dynamic range (HDR), peak luminance, black levels and wide color gamut, among other important metrics.

The UHDA’s Premium Certification is the most trusted identifier of top UHD picture quality. A certification logo from the UHDA will be included on all Samsung SUHD TVs in 2016, ensuring consumers can easily identify premium technology in the marketplace, and choose products with confidence.

“We are proud to receive Premium Certification from the UHDA for all Samsung 2016 SUHD TVs which offer outstanding picture quality. It validates our ongoing efforts to deliver the most true-to-life UHD viewing experience, for as many people as possible,” said Hyun Suk Kim, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “We will continue our work with the UHDA to establish UHD picture quality standards and drive progress across the home entertainment industry.”

Samsung’s 2016 SUHD TVs have been recognized for their technological performance in all areas of picture quality, with their HDR capacity in particular offering the closest reproduction yet, of natural light. The 2016 SUHD TVs also reduce reflections caused by ambient lighting, resulting in improved contrast and a sharper picture, regardless of the viewing environment.

The group recently announced the quality criteria for HDR, across displays, content and distribution methods. These specifications were developed through the collaborative efforts of leading film studios, consumer electronics manufacturers, content distributors and technology companies, with significant input from consumer surveys.

Samsung Electronics announced the Samsung Portable SSD T3, a premium, palm-sized, external solid state drive (SSD) that offers multi-terabyte (TB) storage capacity. Equipped with Samsung’s proprietary Vertical NAND (V-NAND) and SSD TurboWrite technology, the T3 drive provides advanced performance, enabling consumers, content creators, business and IT professionals, to quickly and easily store and transfer large multimedia content across a variety of devices.

The T3 solves these concerns by enabling blazing-fast file transfers based on sequential read and write speeds of up to 450MB/s with a USB 3.1 interface, which is up to four times faster than alternative external HDD solutions*.

Mobility and Durability Suited for an On-the-Go Lifestyle

Designed specifically for today’s mobile lifestyle, the Portable SSD T3 is compact, lightweight and durable. The drive is smaller than an average business card and weighs a mere 50 grams approximately (less than two ounces), allowing users to easily carry large amounts of data with them anywhere.

Unlike an external HDD, the SSDs do not have moving parts and so the T3 is inherently better protected from damage or data loss due to bumps or drops. Featuring a new shock-resistant metal case and internal frame, the T3 can withstand up to 1500G of force and will survive a drop of up to two meters. The drive’s integrated Thermal Guard prevents overheating in extreme temperatures, and the T3 comes with a three-year limited warranty.

Increased Compatibility and Data Security

Featuring an adopted USB 3.1 Type C connection, the T3 is compatible with a wide range of USB supported devices, including the latest Android smartphones and tablets, and computers with Windows or Mac OS. Users can send data from the T3 to a PC and vice versa, access content on the T3 through mobile devices, and view the drive’s multimedia content on large-screen devices such as TVs. The T3 uses exFAT, a widely adopted file system, as its default file recognition format to create a seamless user experience. The T3 also works with a brand-new complementary Samsung Portable SSD Android mobile app which supports password changes and remaining capacity checks.

The drive has a simple set-up process for users, with one user-set password. The drive is equipped with AES 256-bit hardware encryption for the high level of security and protection across Windows, Mac and Android OS based devices. Even if the drive should fall into the wrong hands, the data stored on it would be inaccessible.

The Samsung Portable SSD T3 will be first launched in February, 2016 in countries including the United States, China, Korea and select European countries and will subsequently become available worldwide.

For a TV with more than three external devices connected, on average, the Smart Control remote will consolidate multiple remote controls into one, seamless device. Built upon the Tizen platform, the new Smart Control remote provides quicker and more streamlined access to entertainment, thanks to its automatic source recognition. That spirit will once again be on display at the CES 2016. To get a deeper sense of Samsung’s long tradition of achievement and progress, here is an overview of some of its most transformative innovations.

Innovations That Matter

Whether TVs or mobile phones, semiconductors or home appliances, Samsung has been turning the future into the present for decades. It developed the world’s first 30-inch TFT-LCD TV in 1997 and in 2006 it unveiled the world’s first 82-inch LCD TV with an LED backlight (LN-S8297D). More recently, 2014 CES was where Samsung debuted its lineup of curved UHD TVs, then in 2015 it introduced SUHD TV, with displays that offer the brilliant colors, vibrant details and immersive UHD resolution.

Samsung has also introduced some more unusual innovations, like the touch display table in 2012 (the SUR40), the first transparent LCD TVs ready for mass production in 2012 (LTI460AP01) and the world’s first bendable UHD TV at CES in 2014 (85U9B)—and that’s just for displays.

Mobile devices are key parts of people’s lives, giving them the unprecedented freedom and convenience to work and enjoy life while on the go, from anywhere they choose, and Samsung long has been at the forefront of bringing these advances to life. It introduced the world’s first commercialized watch phone in 1999, the SPH-WP10, which—at 50 grams and 2 centimeters thick—was unlike anything else in the market at the time.

Samsung also introduced a wearable sports device back in 2004, the CES Innovation Award-winning MP3 player YP-60. Known at the YEPP Sports, this MP3 player was worn like an arm band and was capable of calculating heart rate, tracking calories burned and being used as a stopwatch. Today Samsung is continuing to lead the way with wearables, and the Gear S2—with its unique rotating bezel and more than 1,000 compatible apps—has been recognized with a Best of Innovation award at the 2016 CES. And the Gear VR turns the Galaxy Note5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ smartphones into an incredibly immersive virtual reality experience, in a comfortable and convenient headset.

Semiconductors and storage devices have long been areas where Samsung had been at the cutting edge. It won a CES Innovation Award in 2008 for its 64GB SSD memory. This groundbreaking memory device, using NAND flash memory, was one of the first SSDs to use a SATA II interface, and helped to usher in the transition to SSDs.

Since then, Samsung continued to innovate and break new ground in the SSD sector. In 2015, it introduced the portable SSD T1, which offers up to 1TB of memory in a form about the size of a credit card. The T1 was a 2015 CES Innovation Award winner. And with the 2016 CES Innovations Awards, Samsung has been recognized for its 2TB T3 and 950 PRO SSD drives.

How different is Samsung’s 950 PRO with NVMe? The 64GB SSD drive from 2008 offered read/write speeds of 100MB per second. But the 950 PRO has read speeds of 2,500MB per second and write speeds of 1,500MB per second. With progress like that, it is not a surprise that Samsung is the world’s No. 1 SSD memory maker.

IoT Advancements Reshape Everyday Life

The Internet of Things (or IoT) has been front-and-center for Samsung since its keynote address at CES 2015. But, in fact, Samsung has been developing IoT-related technologies for years, having long seen the potential in connecting all the devices in people’s homes and in their lives.

Samsung’s Anynet platform, which integrated home theater components, debuted at CES in 2004. Then in 2008, Samsung’s UbiCell compact base station also won a CES Best of Innovation award. UbiCell was the world’s first home use mobile base station to provide secure, indoor wireless service over existing broadband networks.

In 2013, Samsung won an innovation award for its LED Smart Bulb. The Samsung Smart Bulb used less energy and lasted longer than incandescent bulbs, integrated with wireless communications capabilities so people could control their lighting using their smartphone.

Today, Samsung’s IoT services are taking the possibilities and convenience of the IoT to a whole new level. Samsung will showcase the upgraded game service at CES 2016, enabling download and streaming games through 2016 Samsung Smart TVs. Recent additions include Assassin’s Creed III, Batman: Arkham Origins, and The LEGO Movie Videogame from PlayStationNow, will be available for gamers to stream games directly through their Samsung Smart TVs. The games available through the service will range from action, sports and racing to role playing game (RPG), first person shooter (FPS) and board games.

The addition of so many game titles will enhance Samsung’s Smart TV GAMES offering even further; so far, its service is being used by gamers in 43 countries, with a record of boasting 4.5 million monthly users – directly reflecting the increasing popularity of gaming in recent years.

The PlayStationNow service will also be improved in 2016. This service is available in the U.S. and Canada, and offers subscribers nearly 300 games, including recently added titles. Popular PlayStation 3 games such as Mortal Kombat, The Last of Us: Left Behind, God of War III, BioShock 2 and Borderlands 2 will also be included.

GameFly, one of the leading game streaming service that is currently available in 21 countries, from Brazil through Mexico, U.S. and Canada to Mainland Europe and Scandinavia, will have more than 100 console-game titles available on the 2016 Samsung Smart TV.

In addition to a massive expansion in streaming options, Samsung Smart TV users can also download over 100 games to play, including Revolt3, Deer Hunter, Eternity Warriors 3 and more.

The three projects are WELT – a healthcare belt that helps people manage their waist size by measuring their daily habits and behaviors, rink – a hand-motion controller for mobile VR devices, and TipTalk – a remarkable new user experience (UX) that enables users to hear sounds, transmitted through their own body.

These C-Lab projects will be showcased at Eureka Park, the flagship destination for startups at CES, in Hall G, Level One of the Sands Expo, from January 6 to January 9, 2016. As the projects are still in the development process, they are being showcased to assess their market potential and to gather hands-on feedback from CES attendees, enabling further improvements to be made.

WELT – A More Discreet Way to Track Personal Health

WELT is a smart wearable healthcare belt that looks like a normal belt, thus offering consumers a more discreet way of using smart sensor technology to monitor their health. WELT is capable of recording the user’s waist size, eating habitsand the number of steps taken, as well as time spent sitting down. It then sends this data to a specially-designed app for analysis, and the production of a range of personalized healthcare and weight management plans.

rink – Taking Mobile VR to the Next Level with Hand-Motion Control

rink is an advanced hand-motion controller for mobile VR devices which offers a more intuitive and nuanced way to interact with the virtual world. The ability to intuitively control the game or content just by using their hands provides consumers with a much deeper level of mobile VR immersion.

TipTalk – The Future of Wearable Communications Offer Greater Call Clarity

TipTalk is a remarkable new UX that enables people to listen to the sound from their smart devices, such as the Samsung Gear S2, without headsets or earphones, simply by touching their finger to their ear. This enhances the clarity of calls, enabling them to be taken in public, even in noise-sensitive or loud environments, such as a concert hall or building site – without the risk of being overheard.

Shaped like a watch strap, ‘TipTalk’ can be added to watches – analog or smart – and sync with smartphones, enabling Text-to-Speech (TTS) functionality.

C-Lab: Empowering Samsung Employees with a Culture of Innovation

Since being founded in 2012, Samsung’s C-Lab has fostered creative thinking throughout the company and supported more than 100 projects. Of these C-Lab projects, around 70 have already been completed, 40 of which are currently being further developed by Samsung’s business units.

This year, nine of these projects have been identified as having an especially high potential. As such Samsung has helped these project teams launch fully-fledged external startups – with one example being the inventor of Tip Talk, Innomdle Lab, which launched as a new, independent company in August 2015.

Samsung Electronics announced GAIA, a powerful and comprehensive three-layer security solution for its entire 2016 line up of Tizen-based Smart TVs. The service will give consumers protection across all areas of the Smart TV ecosystem, including services, software and hardware security.

“Protecting consumers’ personal information is of the utmost importance to Samsung, both in terms of the company’s values and what’s needed for the continued growth and success of the IoT ecosystem,” said Hyun Suk Kim, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “GAIA is a security solution that will give Samsung customers security and peace of mind now and in the future.”

GAIA protects consumer’s personal data in three ways. Firstly it has Secure Zone, a virtual barrier that creates a secure space and protects the core service operations. A Secure Keypad/Number Pad – the virtual data input mechanism seen on a TV, is used to safeguard consumers’ personal information such as credit card and password.

Secondly, GAIA encrypts important data transmitted between the TV and IoT service servers. GAIA’s built-in anti-malware system detects and blocks any unauthorized programs that may be used for hacking from running or making changes to key part of the Smart TV’s OS.

Thirdly, Security level is also strengthened in terms of hardware. By dividing the Tizen OS into two parts including the main and the security space, data for each space is secured separately. Also, public key used for verifying personal information is included in the hardware chip.

Samsung views 2016 as the year the TV will become the center for Internet of Things (IoT) extensions in the home. As well as being equipped with GAIA, all 2016 Samsung SUHD TVs will be IoT hub technology enabled, allowing the TV itself to act as the controller for the entire home IoT service.

Samsung Electronics announced it has won a CES 2016 Best of Innovation Award in the Accessible Tech category for one of its new Smart TVs, which will be revealed in full at CES in Las Vegas, on January 5^th, 2016. Held annually, the CES Innovation Awards honor outstanding design and engineering in consumer technology, with the winning products displayed for everyone to experience at the Innovation Awards Showcase, live at CES.

“Designing a television that offers the best possible picture quality and is accessible for all our customers is something we aim to achieve with all our SUHD and Smart TV models,” said John Ryu, Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “We are proud to have our Smart TV recognized for offering best in class accessibility by the CES Innovation Awards. Voice Guidance: A More Convenient User Experience

Samsung’s Voice Guidance feature makes a range of TV functions easier to use, including setup, web browsing and other steps typically only shown on screen. Using their normal conversational voice, people can easily interact with the TV, for example to record upcoming programs and manage various Smart TV applications, as well as to request information such as show times and program titles.

Amplify and Clear Voice: Improving Sound Clarity

The Amplify function of Samsung Smart TV can enhance high-frequency sounds to further improve sound clarity. Another Clear Voice function makes spoken dialogue easier to hear by adjusting frequency of the voices in the TV.

New Graphical User Interface: Enhanced Readability

New Smart TV’s graphical user interface offers better overall on-screen readability with twice the contrast of previous models.

With more than 300 CES Innovations Awards over the past decade, including 22 Best of Innovation awards, Samsung Electronics has long led the way at the famous consumer electronics event. Since 2007, CES has recognized more than 50 of Samsung’s TVs, 50 mobile devices and accessories and 20 processors and memory components, firmly establishing the company as a tech leader. In addition, Samsung has won CES Innovation Awards for a wide range of its other devices, such as wearables, home appliances, virtual reality, healthcare devices and the Internet of Things (IoT).

But after so many years, the concept of “cutting edge” has changed significantly.

9 Times the Resolution—The Evolution of ‘Cutting-Edge’

Samsung has come a long way since it first started attending CES in the 1980s and actually won several dozen Innovation Awards in the 1990s for its TVs, VCRs, fax machines and microwave ovens. But since the turn of the new millennium, the company really amped up its advances.

Samsung TV picked up Best of Innovation awards in 2002—for its 24-inch TFT-LCD TV monitor—and in 2004 for the aforementioned HLP-5685W rear-projection DLP (digital light processing) TV. While today, nearly all TVs on the market are LCDs and high definition, back in 2002 it was still novel, making the TFT-LCD a premium product, even at 24 inches.

The HLP-5685W DLP TV was also hailed for its quality when it arrived, even though its screen resolution was just 720p. As a DLP screen, the 56-inch TV was big, measuring more than 58 inches wide, 58 inches high and 21 inches deep (147 centimeters by 147 centimeters by 55 centimeters). The TV was also recognized for being “light,” despite checking in at 61 kilograms.

In contrast, the JS9500, Samsung’s latest SUHD TV, has nine times the resolution of that 2004 DLP and is just a fraction of the weight, with tiny frames and incredibly thin body. And, of course, with the advances in display technology, like high dynamic range (HDR), Nano Crystal Color and Multi-Zone Full Array Backlighting, the quality of the screens today cannot be compared.

Mobile phones have also seen radical changes over the years. In 2003, Samsung won a Best of Innovation award for its SGH v205 flip phone. Back then, state-of-the-art meant a 128X160 pixel screen in a device that was 23 millimeters thick, with the ability to hold 500 phone numbers and a 16-bit color palette. Today, Samsung’s flagship phone, the Galaxy S6 edge+ has a crystal-clear Super AMOLED screen with 2,560×1,440 pixels and a body that is 6.9 millimeters thick—needless to say, the Galaxy S6 edge+ is also a Best of Innovation winner at CES 2016.

Memory and processors are also fields where Samsung has long led the way. In 2009, Samsung won an Innovation Award for its S3C6410 application processor, a System on Chip (SoC) microprocessor with a low-power, specialized architecture for use in embedded systems, like digital cameras, smart TVs and set-top boxes.

Samsung also picked up a record-setting four consecutive Innovation Awards for its mobile DRAM, for its 2Gb LPDDR3 in 2013, the 3Gb LPDDR3 in 2014 and the 4Gb LPDDR4 in 2015, along with a 2016 Innovation Award for the 12 Gb LPDDR4.

Memory storage devices are also completely different from a decade ago. Samsung’s first solid state drive won an Innovation Award in 2008, then offering 64GB of memory with read/write speeds of 100MB per second. But the 2016 Best of Innovation-winning 850 PRO is now 2TB, with a sequential read speed of up to 550MB per second and write speed of 520MB per second. Another Best of Innovation winner at the 2016 CES, the 512GB 950 PRO SSD, offers read speeds of 2,500MB per second and write speeds of 1,500MB per second.

Leading the Way with Best of Innovation Awards

Over the past decade, Samsung has won 22 Best of Innovation awards—including five in 2009 alone—demonstrating the company’s dedication to always pushing the limits of consumer technology. While TVs have been a mainstay of this category, Samsung has also been recognized for a range of innovations.

In 2008, Samsung won for its Bluetooth speakers (YA-BS900), and the next year it picked up an award for its projector TV (MBP200). Three years in a row, from 2009 to 2011, it won Best of Innovation awards for its Blu-Ray players. For 2016, Samsung is extending its success to wireless handsets for the Galaxy S6 edge+ and wearables for the Gear S2.

Putting the ‘Planet First’ with Eco-Friendly Innovations

As part of its innovations, Samsung has long put a premium on the environment, too, as reflected in the company’s many Eco Design awards since 2009. That year, Samsung was awarded two Eco Design awards, for its LCD46B600 TV and its WF448 washing machine. Since then, the company has also been recognized for its phones, memory devices, oven ranges, microwaves, smart light bulbs, printers and more, with more than 20 Eco Design awards. That commitment continues this year, with the latest TV model winning an Eco Design award, too.

The Dedication to Progress Continues

Today, Samsung’s leadership across consumer electronics continues. This year’s 38 CES Innovation Award winners include the Internet of Things (for the SmartThings Hub and SleepSense Sleep Monitor), a mobile home entertainment unit (Galaxy View) and virtual reality device (Gear VR).

Having won so many awards from CES over the past decade, Samsung has shown a continued dedication to developing the next-generation of technology. But none of these advances were innovation for innovation’s sake. It has always been about putting consumers first, and offering the best possible experiences for them.

The close of the year means that CES is just around the corner. CES is an international electronics and trade show which attracts major companies and industry professionals from all over the globe. Every January in Las Vegas, new products are announced and history is made.

There is no event experience quite like CES. For nearly 50 years, CES has been the prime showcase for launching the most innovative and disruptive tech devices, including the VCR (1970), CD player (1981), DVDs (1996) HDTV (1998) and Blu-ray player (2003). According to organizers the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), the trade association representing the $285 billion U.S. consumer technology industry, last year’s CES was a record-breaking year, with almost 180,000 attendees from 153 countries. In fact, CES has grown so much, CTA has said it will cap attendance this year.

Samsung Electronics has a strong history as a top presenter and industry leader at CES, and this year will be no different. With the most immersive, beautiful TVs, cutting-edge smart appliances and transformative innovations on display, Samsung is sure to make an impact once again.

CES 2016 Tech Trends

CES is famous for unveiling new technologies that change the way consumers experience everyday life. What are some of the latest trends to expect at CES this year?

IoT / Smart Appliances

A future of connected devices seems to be the way the world is moving, not only in our personal homes, but in city infrastructure as well. CES is sure to unveil new possibilities of a connected future from mobile to home appliances.

Samsung announced its vision for an open, totally connected IoT at CES 2015, stating that all Samsung devices would be IoT-enabled within five years. Then at IFA 2015, Samsung showed how it was putting a “human-centric” IoT into practice, with the launch of the Samsung SmartThings hub for the home and dozens of partnerships throughout the industry. SmartThings recently added many more synchronized smart devices—lights, locks, air vents and more—to its compatibility list, and it is likely there will be more IoT at CES 2016.

In previous years, Samsung has repeatedly unveiled its ground-breaking TVs at CES, like Ultra slim LED TV screens, curved displays, bendable TV displays and its unparalleled SUHD TV displays. At IFA in September, Samsung showed how it is continuing to develop the highest-quality TVs, but closely linked to the IoT, making the TV-watching experience more interactive and useful than ever. At CES 2016, expect to see these trends grow even more, with connectivity and picture-quality reaching new levels of excellence.

Mobile and Wearables

It wouldn’t be an electronics show without new mobile and wearable device technologies on display. This year saw the rise of curved glass displays, larger screens and ever-better cameras, so expect many more big announcements this year.

The wearable market is particularly hot right now, with industry sources expecting revenues to grow about 60 to 70 percent over the next three years.  Because of that fantastic growth, the wearable device industry is expected to greatly expand how many wearables and related lifestyle devices it has on display at CES in 2016.

Smart Cars, Robotics and Drones

According to CTA, nine major automakers and over 100 auto tech companies will be in attendance this year. The growth in attendance in this field reflects the growing trend of smart car technology. Robotics is also seeing a 71 percent increase in exhibit space at CES 2016. More than 20 companies will showcase a full range of robotic technologies and how it will fit into the way consumers learn, do business and live healthier lives. Hand-in-hand with robotics is drone technology. We will continue to see how it is changing the way we view the world.

Samsung and the Synchronized Life

Once again, Samsung will be presenting a high-profile keynote address. Titled “In Sync with REAL Life,” this keynote will focus on the latest developments in IoT and Samsung’s tangible solutions for providing a smarter, synchronized life. Data security and mobile payments will also be a focus during the presentation. President of Samsung SDS, WP Hong, Ph.D., will deliver the keynote at 9 a.m. on January 7, in the Venetian Palazzo Ballroom.

Prior to the main event opening, Samsung will hold its Unveiling 2016 Press Conference, featuring its flagship TVs, home appliances and much more. The conference, to be held January 5 at 2 p.m., will showcase a wide range of cutting-edge and exciting products.

At its exhibit site, Samsung will be displaying its many innovative products and technologies, including winners of the CES 2016 Innovation Award. These featured products include all of the Galaxy flagship devices released this year (Note5, S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+ and S6 activ), the Galaxy Gear S2, Gear VR, fast-charging portable battery pack and wireless charging pad. Its smart home award winners, the Samsung SmartThings Hub and Chef Collection series, will also be part of the exhibition. Samsung will also exhibit its leading technologies in both memory storage and visual displays.
