Samsung has been the world’s top display and signage company for more than seven years now, thanks to its strong lineup of leading displays and content management software. Starting in 2009 when Samsung Signage took 12.6 percent of the world market, the company has continued growing, reaching a record 28.1 percent last year.

Let’s take a look at some of the biggest innovations and most popular products Samsung has released since becoming the market leader in 2009.

2009

7.3mm slim-bezel video wall

Video walls can be a great way to command customer attention, grouping together a series of screens to make a big display. And with the slimmer bezel—just 7.3 mm separating two screens when they are tiled together—Samsung improved the effect, so people can focus their attention on the screens, not the device and its edges.

2010

First LCD e-Board display

Samsung’s e-Board displays turned signage smart, adding a touch-screen element to the high-quality screens so consumers can directly interact with content. Using the MagicIWB software package, companies gained the ability to create dynamic programming and even write content directly onto the screen.

2011

Launched 40-inch multi-touch display table

Together with Microsoft, Samsung released the SUR40, a 40-inch multi-touch screen table display. This innovative and unconventional display won Samsung a Best of What’s New award from the influential magazine Popular Science. These panels were able to detect more than 50 touch points simultaneously, giving them unprecedented levels of functionality.

2012

Debut of transparent LCD displays

Transparent displays were a major breakthrough, especially for retail, where the technology promised to combine the engagement of regular signage with the ability to show real-world, physical items. Available in 22 inches and 46 inches, transparent LCD displays weren’t just futuristic—they were a whole new way for retailers to interact with the public.

75-inch e-LED signage, the world’s largest

The e in e-LED standing for eco-friendly, Samsung introduced LED Back Light Unit (BLU) technology to signage solutions. LED signage saved energy—up to 40% compared to conventional LCD-based solutions. These LED panels were also halogen- and mercury-free, which enabled users to help conserve our planet’s natural resources and reduce carbon emissions.

2013

Samsung SMART Signage Platform (SSSP)

Powered by a System on a Chip (SOC) semiconductor, the Samsung SMART Signage Platform (SSSP) was a major leap forward for the display industry. The open-source, all-in-one platform eliminates the need for an external player, letting businesses manage their displays and create content with a system that’s intuitive, convenient and low-cost.

3.5 mm narrow-bezel video wall

Not content with its previous 7.3 mm bezel displays, Samsung continued to refine and improve its screens until the bezel was reduced to 3.5mm. Now, video walls could made even better, with the space between displays continuing to shrink.

Samsung tops 50% of U.S. signage market

Samsung passed a major milestone in 2013, as its share of the signage market in the United States grew past 50 percent.

2014

ME95C SMART signage called ‘Most Innovative’

InAVate magazine named Samsung’s ME95C SMART Signage the Most Innovated Display at the 2014 InAVation Awards. In a world where size matters, the ME95C offered an attention-grabbing 95” display with an excellent full high-definition (FHD) resolution while the edge-lit LED technology allowed for a lightweight form factor that took up minimal space.

SSTV expands retail possibilities

Samsung SMART Signage TV (SSTV) was designed to bring high quality TV options to small businesses. Coming in 40 inches and 48 inches, SSTV combined the informational and promotional benefits of digital display by sharing various customized in-store promotions and business content, along with the entertainment value of live TV for business customers – all at the same time.

4 times the resolution in 85-inch UHD displays

With the introduction of UHD displays, Samsung brought four times the resolution of regular HD displays into its crystal-clear, 85-inch models, helping businesses make their displays more impactful and eye-catching than ever. Samsung QMD Series SMART Signage displays offered UHD resolution on a commercial-grade glossy panel that can be operated reliably for up to 16 hours/day, 7 days/week.

2015

Introduction the Samsung Safety Truck

By placing cameras on the front of a truck and four large monitors on the back, drivers following large trucks would able to see the road ahead, greatly improving safety. This concept won Samsung eight prizes at the 2015 Clio Awards and also seven Cannes Lions in 2015 including the Titanium Lion in the Titanium and Integrated category.

OH46D, OH55D – Brighter and more durable than ever

These new displays brought incredibly brightness—3,000 nit—making them ideal for outdoor usage, clearly visible even on bright, sunny days. They are also rugged, able to operate in temperatures ranging from -30 degrees Celsius to 50 degrees Celsius.

Samsung acquires YESCO Electronics

The acquisition of the U.S. display manufacturer YESCO Electronics added to Samsung’s capacity in the LED signage market, boosting its ability to supply displays for large outdoor venues, like sporting stadiums.

2016

Transparent OLED video wall at the BMW Driving Center

Transparent display technology has continued to advance since Samsung introduced its transparent LCD solutions in 2012. But now, at the BMW Driving Center in Korea, six 55-inch transparent OLED displays have been put together to present information and special features to customers in a unique manner.

Even smaller bezels – just 1.6 mm

The latest UHF-E (Extreme Narrow Bezel) video wall has bezels that are just 0.9~1.05 mm on the upper and left sides, and 0.5mm on the lower and right sides. From 7.4mm in 2009 to 3.5mm in 2013 to 1.6~1.7mm in 2016, Samsung further improved its narrow bezel technology to allow business customers can keep audiences focused on rich visual content rather than on the display itself.

OHD series named AV Display Innovation of the Year

Samsung’s innovative OHD series of SMART Signage was recognized for their robustness and brightness—as well as better content management systems than ever—winning the AV Display Innovation of the Year award in 2016 from AV News.

The world’s largest LED baseball scoreboard

The scoreboard at the SK Wyverns Munhak Baseball Stadium in Incheon, Korea, recently installed a new scoreboard—a mammoth 64-meter by 18-meter LED scoreboard built by Samsung. More than just a giant screen, Samsung is also providing the installation, operating systems, and maintenance, showing off its extensive capacity when it comes to commercial signage.

Innovative mirror displays come to Leekaja Hair Salon

Using the Samsung 55-inch mirror display, the Leekaja Hairbis hair salon in Seoul is providing a unique styling option for customers. In the first commercial installation of mirror displays, customers can look at their reflection, but seen with a variety of hairstyles and looks, so they can better understand their styling options.

Samsung Electronics will showcase a complete portfolio of digital signage and visual display solutions at the Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2016 tradeshow, between February 9 and 12 at the RAI Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. Under the theme of ‘Taking Innovation to the Next Level’, Samsung will show a range of display products optimized for retail, hospitality, meeting-room and entertainment environments, among others. In Samsung’s biggest ever ISE booth (#AM-100) at 1,415㎡, attendees be able to experience the company’s vision of the future of cutting-edge display technology.

Samsung’s 2016 ISE booth

“As Samsung manufactures the world’s most brilliant and powerful visual displays, we consistently seek new avenues to further refine our technology and enable our partners to offer new and differentiated experiences to their own customers,” said Seog-gi Kim, Senior Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “We’re looking forward to bringing our vision of the future to life at ISE 2016. As well as demonstrating how our complete display portfolio and latest technology will unlock new opportunities to deliver fresh, interactive content to our partners most important audiences.”

Samsung’s diverse line-up will range from large-scale video walls and crystal-clear LED signage to retail-friendly transparent OLED and mirror displays. All of which will help show visitors the value of immersive and informative viewing environments and how influential they can be in driving improved engagement and, ultimately, sales.

Powerful, Durable Outdoor Signage

Samsung’s outdoor signage suite enables businesses to share brilliant, highly-visible content in even the most challenging conditions. As highlighted by the OH55D display, Samsung’s outdoor technologies feature internal heating and cooling systems that adjust settings for continued performance in temperatures ranging from -30 to 50o C. Furthermore, the OH55D display is IP56 certified to prevent damage from dust and water.

Easy to install in kiosks and other complex outdoor usage scenarios, the OH55D display maintains consistent 2,500 nit brightness and a 5,000:1 contrast ratio. Coupled with an embedded automatic brightness sensor that adjusts settings in real-time, users can be confident that their messages will be seen clearly with minimal impact from surrounding natural and ambient light sources.

Professional-Grade Video Walls

Samsung Video Wall at ISE 2016

Optimized for a range of indoor retail, corporate and public-viewing applications, Samsung’s professional-grade, narrow bezel (3.5mm bezel-to-bezel) UD55E-A video walls combine advanced color management capabilities with the visual enhancements of large-format signage, to deliver clear and consistent content. Each UD55E-A video wall undergoes rigorous factory calibration and tuning to prevent brightness and color accuracy irregularities, and ensures that viewers receive messages without visual distraction. As the industry’s first video walls to feature integrated DisplayPort (DP) 1.2 and HDMI ports, the UD55E-A displays accommodate UHD content across a variety of configurations.

ISE 2016 attendees can also get a first look at the industry’s slimmest video wall. Samsung’s UHF-E display features a thin bezel-to-bezel design (0.9mm on the upper and left sides, 0.5mm on the lower and right sides) that keeps viewers focused on the display’s content rather than the display itself. Equipped with the same durability and color presentation components as its predecessors, the UHF-E video wall represents a sleek, stylish alternative for delivering uninterrupted content in most indoor environments.

Fine Pixel-Pitch LED Signage

Designed for corporate, control room and customer-facing environments, Samsung’s indoor SMART LED displays deliver compelling content and inspire collaboration at a lower total cost of ownership. These displays feature top-tier diodes and customizable pixel pitch compositions ranging from 1.5 to 2.5mm, providing seamless visibility while simultaneously accommodating users’ specific operational needs. Combined with design elements that produce the same deep contrast, realistic picture quality and color consistency viewers expect from Samsung’s latest televisions, the LED signage portfolio offers users an extra edge to stand out within often-crowded indoor environments.

In addition, Samsung is spotlighting how its indoor LED signage represents a higher-performing and lower-maintenance alternative to legacy classroom and boardroom technologies. In lieu of projectors and analog boards, Samsung’s LED displays condense multiple pieces of equipment into a single signage solution that expands content sharing possibilities and enhances collaboration.

The Next-Generation Retail Store

Samsung Mirror Displays at ISE 2016

Through its “retail store of the future” exhibit, Samsung invites ISE attendees to view how interactive and sensory displays will drive new customer engagement. Samsung’s ML55E mirror displays and TO55F transparent OLED signage can be used for both promotional and welcome messaging. They can also function as a virtual catalogue of accessories and products. In fashion and cosmetics applications, shoppers also can use the mirror to digitally view how a particular product would look, to enable more informed purchasing decisions.

Samsung’s booth will showcase a wide range of future-focused technologies and applications, including:

A replica hotel guest room, containing Samsung’s LYNK REACH centralized in-room content management system

Touchscreen-enabled small signage that provides supplementary information and encourages seamless wayfinding in entertainment environments

Interactive white board (IWB) displays that enable real-time content sharing and promote simultaneous group collaboration in boardroom and classroom settings

A dedicated applications exhibit where several Samsung partners will demonstrate how the company’s display technologies enhanced their operations. This includes case studies using Samsung SMART Signage Platform (SSSP) content management and H.Browser hospitality connectivity systems.

Samsung Transparent OLED Display at ISE 2016

ISE is Europe’s largest annual professional AV and electronic systems event, and is expected to draw more than 60,000 attendees and exhibitors.

Samsung has amplified large-scale message presentation capabilities for business and retail customers with its new UHF-E (Extreme Narrow Bezel) video wall. Featuring a thin bezel-to-bezel design (0.9mm on the upper and left sides and 0.5mm the lower and right sides), the UHF-E is the world’s slimmest bezel video wall available. With minimal bezel interference, business customers can keep audiences focused on rich visual content rather than on the display itself.

Optimized for indoor applications, Samsung’s UHF-E video wall combines visual quality with the power of professional-grade digital signage. Each UHF-E display undergoes advanced factory tuning to maintain picture integrity and enhance resonance for viewers. An additional embedded ACM chipset adjusts picture content to meet specific color settings and maintains a uniform presentation. The durable UHF-E video wall is designed to perform 24/7, allowing uninterrupted content delivery in various conditions.

Samsung is showcasing its newest curved gaming monitors (CF591, CF391, CF390 and CF398). These 1800R curvature monitors are designed to match the natural shape of the human eye, and with Samsung’s flicker-free and Eye Saver technologies, the products minimize eye strain and fatigue. Samsung’s gaming monitors are supported by AMD FreeSync Technology Over HDMI®, which synchronizes the screen refresh rate with users’ AMD graphics card frame rate to reduce input latency, stutter and lag during gaming. In particular, the CF591 monitor recently earned a verification certificate from UL, evaluating color and uniformity.

Samsung is showing how retail-oriented display technologies, including mirror and transparent OLED displays and ultra-slim bezel video walls, can elevate electronics shopping to a more convenient, informed and customized experience.

As customers enter the store, retailers can use mirror displays to interact and further drive point-of-purchase shopping. The displays’ reflectance (65 percent), high transmittance (90 percent) and frameless design offer retailer new avenues to immediately refine and deliver content from welcome messages to special limited-time offers.

Samsung’s 55-inch transparent OLED offers customers complete product visibility in an engaging and informative format. It also allows retailers to deliver demos and real-time promotional content with improved brightness (150nit), transparency (45 percent) and color presentation (Adobe RGB 100 percent).
