Tailor Made Products for Africa at the Samsung Africa Forum 2012

Recently at the annual Samsung Africa Forum 2012, Samsung unveiled a new line of Visual Display products that align to their core objective of delivering to market products that are relevant and that meet the very specific demands of the African continent – including; Samsung LED TV SurgeSafe+ and Free Satellite TV.

Samsung LED TV – SurgeSafe+ 


Samsung LED TV SurgeSafe+ is a second generation TV following last year’s launch of “SurgeSafe TV”. We have switched the marketing campaign in Pan Africa, to align to the fact that these TVs are well known to be “Drogba’s choice”. These TVs boast all the benefits of LED TV with affordability as a key distinguisher, possible only through Samsung’s leading technology. It was born from the need of African consumers that require access to products that can withstand the consequential impacts of the African climate and economy – which is certainly similar but in some instances varies to that of other global markets. The result, a TV developed that incorporates technology that harnesses the impacts of humidity, lightning and electricity surge and meets the exact demands of the African continent.

Samsung LED TV – Free Satellite 

In Sub-Saharan Africa there are 230 million households of which 80 million have TVs (or better: only 1 out 3 homes has a TV set) and less than 10% have access to digital TV. In an aim to increase access to quality programming and to drive digitalization, Samsung have identified the role that satellite plays in this regard and have concluded agreements with SES, a major satellite operator in a number of African regions to partner with them in delivering to the market Samsung LED TVs that are fitted with built-in satellite tuner – The Samsung LED TV Free Satellite – which means African consumers can enjoy free channels without a decoder and monthly payment through the Samsung free satellite TV.



Through this agreement Samsung will provide approximately 30 English channels and more than 30 French channels and is a key content and product solution relevant to the African requirements of TV evolution. Additionally, these TVs boast the same benefits of the LED SurgeSafe+ TVs and are seeing a large uptake in an increasing number of countries.


This product line with be available in 6 African countries including; Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Ivory Coast, DRC and Cameroon in Early Q3, 2012 and Samsung hope to bring more channels to more African regions in 2013 with a new satellite launch plan from SES for this project.

Limmer believes that this collaboration, being the first of its kind, will not only bring digital content to more African consumers but encourage African broadcasters to launch more free-to-air content in the region.
