A letter, story, article, document, or any other form, writing has always been a way to express our thoughts and emotion. And there aren’t many handwriting styles that are more traditional and can deliver an experience or evoke a feeling quite like calligraphy.

Now, one must wonder, “can the ‘calligraphy or fountain pen’ S Pen feature of the latest Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge deliver the same sentiment?” That is exactly why we met with a talented and experienced calligrapher, Youngmi Chae to ask her what she thinks about the new S Pen feature.

What kind of ‘sentiment’ are we talking about here?

Chae told us when she writes calligraphy, she feels free as if she is liberated from the often-exhausting daily life. Especially when she draws thick and strong lines, she feels relieved as if a rock in her heart has been removed. She says that it is the same feeling she has after watching a fantastic musical or concert.

But she says that it can be more than that, because calligraphy can amplify the emotion of the words or message. For example, she told us that when she gave the word ‘strong’ to a young patient who had kidney problems at the hospital where she volunteered, he had said it cheered him up and encouraged him to think he was going to recover soon. Thus, calligraphy can produce such an intense emotion that can be shared with others; it is more than just a writing experience.

Calligrapher tests out the S Pen

When Chae tested out the new calligraphy pen and fountain pen styles and the calligraphy brush effect of the S Pen for the Galaxy Note Edge, she was impressed (she actually looked stunned) how familiar it is to an experience of the traditional pen or brush. The technologies of the new S Pen definitely intrigued her, especially the pressure sensitivity and response time of it.

Pen Pressure Sensitivity

According to Chae, pen pressure is the most important feature in writing calligraphy, as it is one of the most crucial factors for delivering the sense of feeling depending on various thick, thin, straight, and curvy strokes. Chae was surprised that the S Pen had that pen pressure. For example, the calligraphy feature of the S Pen allowed her to stress, de-stress and change the direction of the strokes as she intended. As a result, the Galaxy Note Edge she wrote seemed to look very edgy, which it was her intention.

Fast Response

Chae was especially impressed with the fast response of the S Pen. When she used the calligraphy pen effect and wrote with the S Pen for the Galaxy Note Edge, she was surprised that it quickly recognized each of her strokes as she intended. Moreover, because of the fast response time, she said it was easy to adjust the amount of ink of the calligraphy pen, fountain pen, and calligraphy brush.

As you can see, this enabled her to write Samsung Tomorrow controlling the thickness of parts she thought would look smooth and produced a flowing artistic writing, representing a friendly and communicative feeling. Overall, she said that she was happy that the result came out the way she felt.

Closing…

In her free time, she writes encouraging messages like “All the best!”, “You are beautiful the way you are.”, and “You will become what you had wished for” and words like happy, challenge, and inspiration. When she writes these messages or words, she thinks of the times related to the words and then writes them with the feeling she has directly. For instance, when she decided to write ‘happy’, she thought of the happiest time in her life and then wrote the word down happily on a traditional Korean paper made of mulberry trees. When we saw the word, it did appear as if it was full of happiness.

By listening to the stories of Chae, we realized how calligraphy writing itself could express a range of feelings and how the S Pen could present that similar feeling. Chae says that a deep understanding and love of the writer him/herself is needed when writing calligraphy. Maybe that is the reason why we feel a certain feeling in calligraphy. Why not start writing calligraphy with a calligraphy pen or brush or even the S Pen and find the real you.
