What does 10 years of industry-leading mobile innovation look like? For the Galaxy range, it takes the form of smartphone displays that redefine immersion, enabling users to see and do more than ever before; performance technologies that keep users connected longer, more securely, and that much more comfortably; and software and camera innovations that continue to push the limits of what mobile devices can do.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Take a look at the infographic below for an in-depth look at 10 of the Galaxy range’s leading innovations that have redefined the smartphone experience over the past 10 years.

1. AMOLED Displays

First featured on: the Galaxy S (2010)

Samsung’s introduction of the first smartphone with a Super AMOLED display laid the groundwork for AMOLED technology to become the industry standard, and ultimately helped pave the way for the era of large-screen smartphones.

The Galaxy S10’s Dynamic AMOLED display takes the immersive viewing experiences that Samsung devices are known for to the next level, combining exceptional color accuracy (100 percent color volume in the DCI-P3 color range) with a peak luminance of 1,200 nits, and without requiring a filter or compromising picture quality, blue light reduction provides maximized eye comfort.

Those stellar specs, along with the display’s groundbreaking support for HDR10+, a next-generation open standard for HDR video, allow Samsung’s newest smartphones to offer a level of picture quality that’s so spectacular, you have to see it to believe it.

2.The S Pen

First featured on: the Galaxy Note (2011)

Since its launch, Samsung’s category-defining Galaxy Note line has introduced a variety of intuitive tools designed to help users maximize their productivity. Chief among these is the devices’ signature stylus: the S Pen.

Each new addition to the Note family adds convenient capabilities to this handy feature; for example, the S Pen that debuted with Note devices starting with the Galaxy Note7 harnesses electromagnetic resonance (EMR) technology, keeping the S Pen and its device connected without relying on static electricity – meaning the functionality of the S Pen is unaffected by water.

Furthermore, while the Galaxy Note3’s S Pen was 1.6mm in diameter, the S Pen of last year’s Galaxy Note9 is just 0.7mm in diameter, and while the debut Galaxy Note’s S Pen supported a pressure level of 256, the Galaxy Note9’s S Pen supports a pressure level of 4096, providing users with a natural writing experience just like that of a real pen.

The S Pen equipping the Galaxy Note9 is also the most versatile yet, thanks to its Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) support, customizable clicks, and deeper integration with fan-favorite Note features.

3. Samsung Knox

First featured on: the Galaxy Note3 (2013)

Built into the company’s smartphones, tablets and wearables at the manufacturing stage, Samsung’s comprehensive security platform, Samsung Knox, offers Galaxy device users a simple and secure environment for storing and managing sensitive data.

Since its introduction, Samsung Knox has helped countless Galaxy users safeguard apps, photos and more from malware, viruses and other malicious threats. Its multi-layered security technology runs through each and every component of a device, from its chipset to its OS through to its applications. Secured by Knox, all your data is securely encrypted and hosted, completely isolated, on a secure place on device to keep your data private.

IT developers and administrators have been driving the security leadership agenda in the mobile industry, and today, Samsung continues to strengthen and enrich Samsung Knox with updates and enhancements that offer businesses and individuals greater security, and greater peace of mind.

4. Biometric Authentication

First featured on: the Galaxy S5 (2014)

Speaking of stalwart security, over the last ten years, Samsung has continuously enhanced its Galaxy lineup with the latest advancements in biometric technologies in order to offer users more tools to protect their devices and personal data.

The Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note4 were the first devices in the series to offer biometric security in the form of home button-embedded fingerprint scanners. It wasn’t long before Samsung expanded its biometric authentication arsenal with iris and facial scanning respectively.

The Galaxy S10 line takes biometric convenience a step further with an Ultrasonic Fingerprint Scanner that’s incorporated into the display, and utilizes ultrasonic waves to recognize the real, 3D contours of a user’s physical fingerprint, more secure than just 2D image recognition.

5. IP68 Dust and Water Resistance

First featured on: the Galaxy S5 (2014)

The Galaxy S5 was the first device in the Galaxy series to achieve an international standard rating of IP67 for dust and water resistance. The Galaxy S7 then achieved an IP682 rating, the highest possible in this certification, meaning that Galaxy users can rest assured that their smartphones are built to stand up to the odd splash, spill or storm.

Prior to this technology, devices stood higher risks of hardware erosion and suffering from electrical shorts when up against adverse conditions. However, Samsung’s technology means that people can use their devices more safely, even in wet environments.

This premium durability standard has now become a staple of Galaxy flagship devices. It’s all part of Samsung’s commitment to ensuring that its devices will be there for users whenever they need them.

6. Wireless Charging

First featured on: the Galaxy S6 (2015)

Samsung has been at the forefront of wireless charging innovation since the technology’s beginnings, introducing advancements that have helped usher in an era in which charging your phone is as simple as placing it on a pad.

After introducing built-in wireless charging support to the Galaxy lineup with the Galaxy S6, Samsung took the technology to new heights with the introduction of Wireless PowerShare on the Galaxy S10, giving users the power to share their device’s impressive battery capacity supported by the Galaxy S10’s Fast Wireless Charging 2.0. Now, the Galaxy series’ latest additions are not only capable of charging wirelessly, but they’re also capable of wirelessly charging other devices, including Qi-certified1 smartphones and wearables.

7. Samsung Pay

First featured on: the Galaxy S6 (2015)

Simple, secure, and available almost anywhere, Samsung Pay has quickly established itself as a mobile payment platform that consumers can trust.

First introduced with the Galaxy S6, Samsung Pay supports seamless payments via both near field communication (NFC) and magnetic secure transmission (MST). Samsung Pay uses three levels of security to ensure and enable secure payments: biometric authentication through fingerprint or iris recognition, tokenization3 and Samsung Knox, Samsung’s defense-grade mobile security platform.

Samsung Pay is available across six continents, with more markets joining the fold each year – and the service’s rapid growth and expansion are revolutionizing the mobile payment landscape. As of August 2018, Samsung Pay has surpassed 1.3 billion transactions globally available in 24 markets.

8. The Infinity Display First featured on: the Galaxy S8 (2017)

Samsung’s introduction of the Infinity Display in 2017 marked the beginning of a bold new chapter in screen design, following the legacy of the increased screen real estate and better grip experience provided by the world’s first curved display, Edge, that debuted on the Galaxy Note edge.

Featuring a bezel-less, dual-edge design that elegantly spills over the edges of the phone, the Infinity Display pushes the boundaries of immersion, enabling users to see and do more than ever before. Seamless and sleek, the display is a beauty to behold – which makes it the perfect canvas for the likewise stunning viewing experiences that Galaxy devices are known for.

Since its introduction on the Galaxy S8, the Infinity Display has become a signature feature of Samsung’s flagship phones. Each year, the company introduces enhancements that make the display even more engrossing and maximizes screen real estate for users to enjoy. The Infinity-O Display available on the Galaxy S10 range is the series’ most immersive, advanced and revolutionary yet.

9. Bixby

First featured on: the Galaxy S8 (2017)

Introduced alongside the Galaxy S8, Samsung’s scalable AI platform, Bixby, was created to offer users a more personal, intelligent and intuitive AI assistant.

Samsung continuously enhances its AI platform with ever-more convenient capabilities designed to help users save time and simplify their day. Users also now have access to Bixby Marketplace, a new ecosystem resource for third-party services – known as ‘capsules’ – that are custom-fit for use with Bixby and allow users to do more of what they need with the assistance of Bixby.

10. Pro-grade Camera (Dual Aperture)

First featured on: the Galaxy S9 (2018)

Smartphone users have come to expect groundbreaking innovations from the Galaxy series – especially when it comes to the devices’ cameras. The Dual Aperture technology included in the series’ recent flagships is one such example of pioneering camera innovation.

Samsung officially debuted the technology on the Galaxy S9, making the device the first smartphone to feature a Dual Aperture camera. In a nutshell, the technology enables the camera to automatically adjust to various lighting conditions just as the human eye would. It does this by combining an F1.5 aperture lens with an F2.4. The ability to let in more light when it’s dark and less when it’s bright enables the camera to minimize visual distortion and ensures that photos are crisp and clear anytime, anywhere.

The Galaxy S10’s camera comes with intelligent software and professional lenses so that users can capture exactly what they see, as they see it, thanks to an unprecedented Ultra Wide 123° panoramic field of view among other innovations that allow users to capture pro-grade photos and videos.

1 Qi is an open interface standard for wireless charging that was created by the Wireless Power Consortium – an industry group that includes device manufacturers, accessory makers and others.

2 An IP68 certification means a device has received a 6 ranking (out of a possible 6, with 6 being the best) in terms of protection against solid damage, and an 8 ranking (out of a possible 8, with 8 being the best) for protection against water of up to 1.5m in depth for up to 30 minutes (not advised for beach or pool use). In the case of contact with water, users are advised to immediately rinse any residue and dry the device.

3 Tokenization is a process that generates virtual information for a transaction without the storing of financial details in a device. This protects users’ financial information.

Sumit Walia, Director, Mobile Business, Samsung India during the launch of Galaxy A7 in New Delhi

Galaxy A7 has been developed based on the consumer insight that nearly half of the Indian millennials use their smartphone cameras daily and their rear camera twice as much as the front camera. In the new triple camera set up, there is an additional 8MP 120° Ultra-Wide Lens, which has the same viewing angle as the human eye. This allows users to capture unrestricted wide-angle photos exactly like what one can see.

The 24MP primary and selfie cameras also feature a new technology – Pixel Binning that allows the device to intelligently detect low light conditions and combine four pixels into one ‘Super Pixel’ for crisp and clear shots in the dark. The 24MP primary camera coupled with 5MP depth lens powers Live Focus feature that controls the depth of field by allowing users to adjust the effect both during and after clicking photos.

Galaxy A7 with powerful triple camera lens

Built on the insight that more than 40% of millennials edit their images prior to using them on social platforms, Galaxy A7 is also power packed with exciting intelligent features. Galaxy A7 camera gets a scene optimizer that automatically detects any of 19 different scenarios such as food, flower, or sunset, etc. and optimises each shot for the best picture composition. Consumers can enhance their instant messaging experience by creating customized avatars using the ‘AR Emoji’ feature by taking a picture of themselves with the selfie camera or a friend with the rear camera. They can choose from a set of GIF images for a more fun and emotive experience. The 24MP selfie camera also has a ‘Pro-Lighting’ feature where images can be edited with multiple lighting settings to deliver a distinct and professional look akin to a studio photo shoot.

“There is innovation and something new in every facet of the Galaxy A7 starting with the triple camera lens to power ultra-wide shots and intelligent features that ensure the best picture composition. The True FHD+ display with Super AMOLED Infinity Display and Widevine L1 certification delivers a superlative viewing experience. The bold new colours and a side fingerprint sensor deliver a refreshed design. We are confident that with this device, we will capture the imagination of the Indian millennial and be able to add to the celebrations during the festive season,” said Sumit Walia, Director, Mobile Business, Samsung India.

Featuring a 6.0-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display, Galaxy A7 along with Samsung’s signature Infinity Display allows users to make the most of uninterrupted, immersive viewing. The True FHD+ display is powered by a Trust Zone technology processor that enables Widevine L1 certification, thus ensuring all popular streaming apps allow HD content to stream seamlessly on Galaxy A7. In order to make this device a true audio-visual delight, it also supports Dolby Atmos® immersive sound technology that brings true HD content to life. Galaxy A7 is an absolute style statement with a 2.5D glass back design, 7.5mm slim body, and a side fingerprint sensor where the sensor has been integrated into the power button for a clutter-free design.

Galaxy A7 will further strengthen Samsung’s leadership in the mid-range segment, which has been bolstered by the recent launch of Galaxy J6+ and Galaxy J4+. The devices come in just ahead of the festive season, thus adding to the consumer delight.

Galaxy A7 also packs a punch when it comes to performance. Galaxy A7 is powered by a Samsung Exynos 7885 2.2GHz Octa Core processor. The device will be available in 6GB RAM/ 128GB ROM and 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM variants. This can be enhanced with a 512GB expandable memory and Samsung’s industry-first ‘Install Apps to Memory Card’ feature. The device is powered by a 3,300mAh battery and runs the Android Oreo operating system.

Offers, Price and Availability

Galaxy A7 range will be priced at INR 23,990 (4GB/64GB variant) and INR 28,990 (6GB/128 GB variant) and will be available in stylish colours– blue, black and gold.

Consumers can avail exciting cash backs worth INR 2,000 when they make a payment through HDFC bank credit and debit cards.

The highly anticipated Galaxy A7 is slated to launch by September end across over 180,000 outlets. In order to give consumers early access, the device will be available on September 27 and 28 for a special preview sale on Flipkart, Samsung e-shop, and at Samsung Opera House in Bengaluru.

The Infinity Design on the Galaxy On6 gives consumers nearly 15% more display area without increasing the overall size of the device. This can be attributed to extremely thin bezels and by swapping the physical home button with software powered in-display home button. The fingerprint sensor also moves to the back of the device for added convenience. These changes in the display hardware deliver a 18.5:9 aspect ratio that provides an end to end viewing experience and more browsing space. The device comes with Samsung’s Super AMOLED display technology that produces deeper contrasts and delivers the most vivid viewing experience.

Samsung’s Infinity Display experience is further strengthened by a new ‘Chat Over Video’ feature that facilitates an uninterrupted and uncompromised viewing experience while chatting. In addition, Galaxy On6 comes with My Galaxy Video with which users can experience aggregated and curated video content from some of the largest and most popular content providers. My Galaxy Video allows users to get curated playlists of short form content, a vast pool of original shows and full length Bollywood movies.

“At Samsung, our constant endeavour is to bring meaningful innovation in our products and services that can truly add value to the lives of consumers… Sporting Samsung’s signature Infinity Display, the Galaxy On6 is a stunning device with state-of-the-art hardware and software features. Packed with brand new ‘Make for India’ innovations such as ‘Chat-Over-Video’, My Galaxy Video and Samsung Pay Mini, Galaxy On6 is a perfect companion for multi-taskers,” said Sandeep Singh Arora, Vice President, Online Business, Samsung India.

Galaxy On6 comes equipped with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage that can be expanded up to an additional 256GB via a microSD card, thus providing extensive storage for music, videos, pictures and applications. Samsung Galaxy On6 packs a 13-megapixel primary camera on the rear and an 8-megapixel front shooter for selfies. Both cameras come with f/1.9 aperture that deliver brilliant low light camera performance. The front camera on this device also enables Face Unlock as an additional security feature.

Galaxy On6 is powered by an Exynos 7870 1.6GHz, Octa-core processor and a 3000 mAh battery and runs on the latest Android operating system – Android Oreo.

Ayyappan Rajagopal, Senior Director at Flipkart said, “The Samsung Galaxy On6 combines the best-in-class technology, the flagship infinity screen making it a great choice for customers looking for a mid-range smartphone. We have seen an overwhelming response for previous Samsung phones on Flipkart, and this exclusive offering, backed by Flipkart’s reach and Affordability levers, is sure to delight customers.

These days, for many of us, smartphones have become our go-to choice when it comes to consuming entertainment. That’s why, when designing the Galaxy S9 and S9+, Samsung prioritized enhancements that would allow the devices to take mobile entertainment to the next level – encompassing not just visuals and audio, but mobile gaming as well.

As a result, in addition to boasting AKG-tuned stereo speakers and an even more immersive Infinity Display, Samsung’s latest flagships feature a Game Launcher app that is more convenient and efficient than ever. Let’s examine exactly how users can utilize the upgraded app to streamline gaming sessions.

A One-Stop Gaming Hub

Before we discuss how Samsung has ‘leveled up’ Game Launcher, let’s take a moment to explore some of the app’s most convenient features.

Game Launcher is essentially a one-stop hub for all things mobile gaming, featuring tools designed to help users get the most out of their gaming experience. Included among these are the abilities to turn off notifications, lock navigation buttons, and mute games’ sound. The app also enables users to easily record videos and capture in-game screenshots, and features modes to boost performance and save power.

Users can enable Game Launcher by accessing Settings > Advanced Features > Games > Game Launcher and tapping the toggle switch, or via the guide page that appears during the start-up of a game. Downloaded games are automatically placed in an icon format in the Game Launcher app in a 4-by-4 arrangement, which also makes it easy to discover exciting new games to add to your collection. (More on that in just a moment.)

Putting Gamers in Control

Housed in the app as well as in the games themselves, Game Launcher’s customizable tools allow you to specify exactly how you’d like your phone to behave when you’re gaming. This makes it easier for users to immerse themselves in the on-screen action.

As soon as users open the app, they’re presented with a pair of icons near the bottom of the screen that enable them to mute games’ sound and toggle Game Launcher’s various performance modes. The latter function includes options to place the device in either ‘High performance’, ‘Normal performance’ or ‘Power saving’ mode, and has been enhanced for the Galaxy S9 with machine learning to foster more efficient gameplay.

Once users begin playing, they’re presented with a wide array of additional features and settings in the form of the Game Tools menu. Accessible via the circular gamepad icon that appears in the Navigation Bar when a game is launched, the menu conveniently places many of Game Launcher’s signature, immersion-enhancing features at users’ fingertips – including controls to hide alerts, lock buttons to prevent accidental touches, and manage several of the other functions outlined above. The Navigation buttons can also be locked to prevent any accidental taps when gaming.

Game Launcher’s latest update has added a few new functions to the Game Tools menu that make it even easier for users to focus on their game. Users may also opt to disable their phone’s auto brightness feature as well as block Bixby during gameplay.

Tailored Recommendations

To make it easier for users to find games they’re sure to love, Game Launcher also includes “Discover More Games”, an advanced game discovery feature, which offers recommendations based on the user’s gameplay history and personal preferences.

Accessible with a simple swipe up from the app’s main screen, the feature conveniently compiles popular and engrossing games that the user may be interested in, with 100-120 featured games highlighted each week for users. If users are unable to find the right game from the featured game selections, the Game Launcher discover page also allows users to search and discover the library of over thousands of games.

Each entry in the various lists from “Discover More Games” is accompanied by a short clip* of in-game action. Once users tap the game, they’ll be led to a comprehensive page that includes a gameplay video, as well as insight into the game’s popularity, related games, and a link to download the game from the Google Play Store.

Also featured in the rundowns are tags* classifying each game’s content and themes into various categories. Tapping a tag will instantly pull up a list of games that share that trait. To make it easy for users to find their next favorite game, Game Launcher’s advanced search function includes support for both keyword and tag-based searches, and even allows you to search for multiple tags at once.

Lastly, to offer users greater insight into their gaming habits, Game Launcher also features a My Games function, which is accessible with a tap of the avatar to the left of the search icon. This handy feature neatly displays your favorite tags and genres of games, compiles in-game video recordings, and makes it easy to keep track of exactly how much you’ve played in a given timeframe.

Open up the Galaxy S9’s enhanced Game Launcher now to take your mobile gaming experience to the next level.

Samsung India today launched four new smartphones- Galaxy J6, J8, A6 and A6+ with Infinity display. The mobile industry will witness a paradigm shift in the design of smartphones with the introduction of Samsung’s signature Infinity Design philosophy on the A & J Series.

Mohandeep Singh, Senior Vice President, Mobile Business, Samsung India launching Galaxy J&A Smartphones

The Infinity Design on the Galaxy J6, J8, A6 and A6+ gives users nearly 15% more display area without increasing the overall size of the device. This can be attributed to extremely thin bezels and by swapping the physical home button with software powered in-display home button. The finger print sensor also moves to the back of the device for added convenience. These changes in the display hardware deliver a 18.5:9 aspect ratio that provides an end to end viewing experience and more browsing space. All four devices come with Samsung’s Super AMOLED display technology that produces deeper contrasts and delivers the most vivid viewing experience. Samsung’s Infinity display experience is further strengthened by a new ‘Chat Over Video’ feature that facilitates an uninterrupted and uncompromised viewing experience while chatting.

“Galaxy J6, J8, A6 and A6+ are built for today’s millennial. These smart phones will set the standard for an unparalleled viewing experience with Samsung’s signature super AMOLED Infinity Display. These phones also get dual rear cameras that let users capture professional grade bokeh images and express themselves in a unique manner. Our latest ‘Make for India’ innovation Chat-over-Video allows uninterrupted viewing experience just the way millennials want it. We are also introducing a new youthful and vibrant blue color that shows that we listen to our young consumers who constantly seek stylish designs,” said Mohandeep Singh, Senior Vice President, Mobile Business, Samsung India.

Chat-over-Video allows consumers to chat through a transparent chat window and keyboard, while a video is still running. This new innovation eradicates the consumer pain point of chat interruptions while viewing content on their mobile devices. The other Make for India innovation, Samsung Mall app, brings a revolutionary new service for millennials. It uses Artificial Intelligence to let users shop by clicking a picture of the desired product and automatically getting results for the item across popular e-commerce platforms.

Samsung Electronics today announced the commercial launch of the Galaxy Note8 to select markets around the world. The flagship smartphone is initially available in 42 countries including the US, Canada, Singapore, Korea and major European markets, and will continue rolling out to additional markets in the weeks ahead.

Equipped with a large, bezel-less Infinity Display, the Galaxy Note8 lets users see and do more, from watching their favorite TV show in HDR to multitasking more efficiently. Expanded screen space means they also have more room to write, draw and color with the enhanced S Pen, which offers new features like Live Message and improved Screen off memo functionality.

Samsung’s newest flagship smartphone also boasts two 12MP rear cameras – a wide-angle lens and telephoto lens with Optical Image Stabilization on both – which are capable of producing clear and crisp photos, even when shot at far distances.

Furthermore, the device is outfitted with the same great collection of cutting-edge features that Galaxy users have come to know and love including IP68 dust and water resistance, powerful performance with a 10nm process and expandable storage up to 256GB.

The launch of the Galaxy Note8 is complimented by an expanded ecosystem that features enhanced services and devices, including Bixby, Samsung’s intelligent interface, and Samsung DeX, which provides a desktop-like experience for the Galaxy Note8.

With the Galaxy Note8, Samsung continues to showcase its heritage in both hardware and software innovation. The phone offers an optimal user experience with a large form factor that easily fits in one hand, innovative display design and technologies, and a line-up of thoughtfully designed accessories.

The Big Screen for Bigger Things

The innovation of the Galaxy Note8’s design makes possible the 6.3-inch Infinity Display. Without obstructive bezels or physical buttons, the display seamlessly blends into the device’s body, adding to the phone’s eye-catching aesthetic while improving its functionality.

To ensure that the Galaxy Note8 achieves optimal performance, the enhanced Infinity Display incorporates a slightly more squared design and a slim bezel – refinements that help to maximize the flat area of the screen, and thus provide more surface area for writing and drawing with the S Pen.

The Quad HD+ Super AMOLED display takes more than 83 percent of the body of the device, making it the biggest screen on a Note device yet. Its expansive screen space – which in landscape mode offers a 14 percent wider viewing area than the Galaxy Note5 – and aspect ratio of 18.5:9 allow for incredibly immersive viewing experiences.

The back of the phone, which features a new dual camera as well as a fingerprint scanner, maintains an equally clean and continuous silhouette as the front of the device with virtually no protrusions. Together with its symmetrically curved design, these changes help to create an ergonomic grip that enables comfortable one-handed operation.

Easy on the Eyes, Smooth to the Touch

Available in two stunning colors, Midnight Black and Maple Gold, the Galaxy Note8 has a premium look that fits almost any style.

Each color is enhanced by the glossy finishing of the phone’s materials, which was created through an intensive polishing process. The polishing was also applied to the frame of the Galaxy Note8, allowing for a seamless flow between the front and back sides of the device. The texture of the material is smooth to the touch, creating a sense of comfort.

A New Rhythm

The Galaxy Note8’s brand sound has also been updated to better harmonize with the design of the device. The tune merges a “Pen Beat,” a rhythm made by drumming the S Pen on various items, and beat-boxing to produce a catchy and millennial-esque melody perfect for a ringtone or daily alarm.
