Samsung Electronics announced today the launch of SeeColors app for QLED TV, which is compatible with all Samsung QLED TVs. The SeeColors app* for QLED TV helps people with Color Vision Deficiency (CVD) identify their personal visual deficiencies through the app. Based on the individual’s results, QLED TVs, featuring 100% color volume, adjust the color settings on the display, allowing viewers with CVD to enjoy a viewing experience with more optimized colors.

“Samsung is committed to making people’s everyday lives smarter and more convenient through technology and innovation,” said Hyeongnam Kim, Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “The launch of SeeColors for QLED TV embodies this mission by providing users with a way to address one of the world’s biggest optical challenges through the latest technologies and visual displays.”

Nearly 300 million people globally have CVD, with approximately 8% of men and up to 1% of women affected**, based on a representative survey conducted in Europe and North America. However, the majority of people with CVD are unaware of their condition and the impact it has on their quality of life.

Through the SeeColors app on the TV, users can identify the type and level of their CVD then directly recalibrate their QLED TV screen based on their personal results. To offer an easy method for people to identify CVD, Samsung Electronics partnered with Professor Klara Wenzel who heads up the Department of Mechatronics, Optics and Mechanical Engineering Informatics at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, to adopt the Colorlite Test, or C-Test, for TV and mobile devices. C-Test, developed by Professor Wenzel, is a digital test that uses the concept of color filters and mathematical modeling to identify CVD. Adopting the C-Test through the SeeColors app has resulted in a simple solution which gives people with CVD the opportunity to see the world through their QLED TVs in more optimized color.

The SeeColors app is available for download from the Smart TV App store. Users can also download the app to conduct the test through Google Play and the Galaxy App Store for Samsung Galaxy smartphones S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, S7, S7 edge and S8 devices. Once users connect their Galaxy smartphone to their QLED TV, the TV will automatically adjust the color setting based on the user’s results.

The SeeColors app is created in partnership with Colorlite®, a Hungarian company that applies certified technology based on 20 years of scientific research to lenses to help people address CVD. The SeeColors app marks the first time Colorlite® is being used on TVs and smartphone devices.

Samsung Electronics has committed to providing a wide range of accessibility features via its innovative products, and its efforts have been recognized with CES Innovation Awards in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

We love TV. And as technology has evolved, the collective industry has come up with ways to present better picture quality to make the final viewing experience

We love TV. And as technology has evolved, the collective industry has come up with ways to present better picture quality to make the final viewing experience more lifelike.

Some of the improvements came through upgraded industry standards. For example, the entertainment industry has gradually increased screen resolution to make clearer images; from Standard Definition (SD) to High Definition (HD) and now Ultra High Definition (UHD). Another recent advancement is High Dynamic Range (HDR), which allows production studios, content distributors, and TV manufacturers to offer brighter and more colorful video.

Some of the improvements come from innovations provided by each company. For example, when Samsung first introduced the LED TV, consumers were able to enjoy images several times brighter than conventional LCD TVs.

In 2015, Samsung started to apply quantum dot technology to its flagship SUHD TVs. Now with more and more industry partners gearing towards HDR, the marriage between Quantum Dot technology and HDR offers viewers a whole new era of home entertainment.

HDR1000: Jack It Up to 1,000 Nits

Although there are many devices that can show HDR content, not all HDRs are equal. Colors are perceived by light; and with the wider range of both luminance and colors for HDR, it is important that the TV can cover the brighter side of the spectrum. HDR1000 means the device is capable of showing at least 1,000 nits* at peak brightness. This intensity of luminance is considered an industry-top level.

Dealing with higher brightness levels poses challenges as it normally means the display device consumes more energy. Higher brightness levels can also cause the device to generate more heat and without proper measures, excessive heat could pose a threat on the product’s lifespan.

With SUHD TVs that feature Quantum dot technology, however, Samsung has an answer that allows TV sets to hit those brightness levels of up to 1,000 nits without the pain points. This is in part thanks to the photo-active property of quantum dots, which makes them very energy-efficient. Samsung was actually able to improve the overall energy efficiency of its 2016 SUHD TVs while enabling the set to hit 1,000 nits.

One Billion Colors

Quantum dots also emit a very pure color, which helps quantum dot displays show much more accurate colors. And by using these accurate reds, greens, and blues, it is able to display broader range of colors. On the other hand, light from conventional fluorescents tend to get mixed with adjacent colors, dropping the range of colors conventional TVs can show. In fact, Samsung’s 2016 SUHD TVs with Quantum Dot technology are able to show up to one billion colors – 64 times more color than the average TV.

This broad range of colors, along with the level of brightness quantum dot allows SUHD TVs to show, allows Samsung to offer richer pictures – closer to the real world than ever. These videos show how SUHD TVs with Quantum Dot technology help show more colors in bright and dark situations:

Recent innovations in display technology offer us an exciting new era of home entertainment. Before you go looking for your next TV set, check where the industry is going and make sure your TV is best-suited for the upcoming wave of UHD and HDR content.

* A nit is a standard unit of luminance, frequently used in measuring the brightness of display devices. One nit is the luminous intensity of a candle lighting an area of one square meter.

Samsung’s 2016 SUHD TV lineup features Quantum Dot technology, which enables the set to present even better picture quality while improving overall energy

Samsung’s 2016 SUHD TV lineup features Quantum Dot technology, which enables the set to present even better picture quality while improving overall energy efficiency. What, then, is a quantum dot; and why is it so good for display?

What Is ‘Quantum Dot?’

Quantum dots are nano-sized crystals made of semiconductor materials. A nanometer (nm) is one billionth of a meter, which means these extra-small particles are smaller than 1/10,000 of a single strand of human hair.*

Quantum dots can be made of different kinds of elements, but when regulated down to a size small enough, the quantum dot possesses physical properties that make it suitable for many different applications. For example, quantum dots are very efficient in absorbing and then emitting light. Based on this quality, quantum dot technology is being researched in areas such as solar panels, bioimaging, and, of course, display.

Why Is Quantum Dot Technology Good For TVs?

<Quantum Dot Demonstration>

Quantum dots are photo-active; they absorb, and then emit light. And when they do, even if the dots are made of the same material, the light each quantum dot emits is a specific color (or wavelength) depending on the size of its core. For example, a quantum dot with a core of 2nm will emit a blue light while one with a 6~7nm core will emit red.

The color of light each quantum dot gives off is also very stable and pure. Quantum dots can show precise colors while the light from conventional materials ends up getting mixed with adjacent colors. This is because the spectral line width (width of each peak in the graph below) of the light from quantum dots is much narrower than that from conventional materials.

As a result, the 3 primary colors can be more clearly distinguished in comparison to conventional TVs, which helps the quantum dot display show a wide range of colors more accurately.

Another advantage of these light-emitting quantum dots is that they’re very efficient. Compared to phosphors in conventional TVs, not only are they able to produce more colors, but the photo-active property allows for better light efficiency.

By leveraging this advantage, Samsung was able to jack up the peak brightness of its new SUHD TVs to 1,000 nits and higher, opposed to the previous 400 nits for conventional TVs– all the while further improving overall energy efficiency. Colors are perceived by light, and by offering more light along with more colors, Samsung SUHD TVs are great for HDR content.

What’s So Great About Samsung’s Quantum Dots?

Many previously developed quantum dot solutions were based on materials that involve cadmium, such as cadmium sulfide (CdS) or selenide (CdSe). Although these quantum dots share the same advantages as written above, they hold a deadly threat against the environment as toxic Cd2+ ions may be released through nanoparticle degradation.

Samsung’s quantum dots, however, are cadmium-free. They’re based on indium (In) instead. After much research and development, Samsung is currently the only company that produces cadmium-free quantum dot displays. Samsung started focusing on quantum dot technology in 2001, and has since registered over 150 patents on the subject.

Samsung’s quantum dots are also durable. Being an inorganic compound, quantum dots are more resistant to oxidation than organic substances. Samsung also applies a quad-layer coat to its quantum dots to ensure the quantum dot display is durable and kept stable over years of time. The result: a fantastic display that keeps its picture quality year after year.

For more information on Samsung’s SUHD TVs with Quantum Dot technology, please visit: www.samsung.com/global/tv/quantum-dot-display.

Samsung Electronics has unveiled a brand video that explains its TV business philosophy. The video showcases how people experience the world together through their TVs.

Even though people may be watching in different parts of the world, they all watch the same news stories, and all share in the joys and tragedies that TV can convey.

It’s that sense of connection and new experience that drives Samsung’s approach to developing TVs, creating state-of-the-art devices and the highest-quality images.

Prominent German commercial director Jan Wentz is the creative mastermind behind this video. Over two weeks, Wentz filmed in 10 locations and three countries to capture a wide range of real life footage. Then, to create a follow-up video, he and his fifty-person crew scaled 4,000-meter-high mountains in Chile to shoot some breathtaking scenes.

Wentz explained, “I captured diverse moments of life in various episodes, which, when viewed on Samsung TVs, allow viewers to encounter new worlds and experience new emotions, behaviors and possibilities.”

The brand video will launch Samsung’s new “This Is TV” campaign, which aims to show consumers the true value of TV.

Samsung, which has led the global TV market for the past decade, is looking to further expand TV’s fundamental value as tele-vision (a Greek-Latin combination that literally means “far sight”) and to strengthen TV’s role as a platform that connects people across space and time, and brings them together to enhance their lives.

The campaign is being conducted under the leadership of Sunghee Han, Vice President of Samsung’s Visual Display Business. Han was recently put in charge of Samsung’s TV marketing, and introducing the new campaign.

“The ‘This Is TV’ campaign sets the standard of what TV can be,” Han noted.” It is part of a long-term approach to demonstrate that Samsung only offers TVs that are worth owning.”

Samsung Electronics, the number one TV manufacturer worldwide for the past 10 years, unveiled its spectacular new line of SUHD TVs that offer unparalleled picture quality with Quantum dot display, state of the art design with the world’s first bezel-less curved design and a new, easy and integrated Smart TV experience powered by the Tizen OS.

The new range was launched at the Samsung Southwest Asia Forum in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, ushering in a new decade of global TV leadership.

Samsung Forum, an annual event, provides exciting opportunities to exchange information, meet the leaders who are driving Samsung Southwest Asia’s growth, and experience the latest innovations in the industry.

“The new SUHD TVs with Quantum dot display demonstrate ground-breaking advances in colour reproduction, brightness, contrast and details. Our passion and commitment for innovation has enabled us to deliver a revolutionary in-home experience with the very best picture quality, bezel-less design and an integrated Smart TV experience. We will continue our focus on innovation to offer our consumers a remarkable home entertainment experience,” said Mr. Rajeev Bhutani, Vice President, Consumer Electronics, Samsung India.

Samsung SUHD TV with Quantum dot display: Unbeatable Picture Quality

Samsung’s 2016 SUHD TVs offer its viewers an unparalleled viewing experience with the revolutionary Quantum dot display technology. It is the world’s only cadmium-free, 10-bit Quantum dot display, offering the most true-to-life picture quality, with stunning brightness, exceptional contrast and the most lifelike colours ever offered by Samsung.

This year, all Samsung SUHD TVs will feature the ability to provide a premium high dynamic range (HDR) experience, with 1,000 nit brightness for a higher level of contrast between light and dark images. New Ultra Black technology also significantly reduces light reflection, further enhancing picture quality with minimal glare. Inspired by nature, Ultra Black absorbs natural light the same way that a moth’s eye enables it to see better at night.

360 design for Unparalleled Immersion

Samsung has designed the world’s first bezel-less Curved TV, the KS9000 SUHD TV, providing an ultimate immersive viewing experience. The curved screen is truly a work of art from every angle. With no bezel that normally functions as the frame, viewers can experience surround view and an enhanced feeling of depth for an elevated immersive viewing experience.

In keeping with this design ethos, Samsung has also sought to eliminate all unnecessary elements, even removing screws from the rear of the TV, to create an elegant product that is beautiful from every angle.

2016 Smart Hub: The Smart Experience just got Smarter

Built on the Tizen operating system (OS), Samsung’s 2016 Smart TVs make it easier for consumers to discover and access all their favourite content and services, from TV and movies to games and program information, all in one place.

New Smart Hub – This is designed to provide users with simple access to their favourite content. Features like Live TV, Over The Top (OTT), games and even the menu that appear on the home screen of the Smart TV allow users to access their favourite programs as soon as they turn on the TV.

Samsung Smart Control remote – The new Samsung Smart TV eliminates the need to juggle multiple remote controls as it will automatically recognize the type of Home theatre system or game console that is to be connected. This allows users to combine all external remote controls into the Smart Control Remote – with no set up required.

Console-less Gaming –Various streaming and downloadable games will be available on the 2016 Samsung Smart TVs from Global as well as Indian content providers which will allow consumer to have realistic gaming experience on large screens.

Smart View – The Samsung Smart View mobile app allows users to share their favourite content instantly with their family. The upgraded Smart View is now available beyond Samsung Galaxy devices, supporting Android and iOS devices, as well as Windows PCs. Popular apps and websites from Global and Local content providers will also be Smart View enabled, so that consumers can have a holistic entertainment experience using the App.

Samsung’s First Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

Samsung also unveiled its first Ultra HD Blu-ray Player, the UBD-K8500, which is HDR compatible and offers four times the resolution and 64 times detailed color expression of a conventional Blu-ray player. It features a sleek, curved front design which matches perfectly with your SUHD TV.

When paired with Samsung SUHD TVs Quantum dot display, the new UHD Blu-ray player delivers a level of picture quality never seen before in homes.

The UBD-K8500’s built-in upscaling technology enhances the picture quality from standard Blu-ray discs and DVDs, and consumers can also play CDs.

During CES, Samsung exhibited its most recent additions to its line-up of innovative displays, including its 2016 SUHD TVs. While the astounding picture quality of the displays is no doubt the showstopper, Samsung has also focused its efforts on their design.

Featuring sleek, ergonomic curves, the devices were made to be easy on the eyes. Furthermore, bezel-less screens make the displays beautiful from all angles. Samsung has clearly proved that sometimes the real beauty of a product is in its details, even the small ones.

Samsung Electronics, the world’s No.1 TV manufacturer, talked the future of television at IFA 2015 in Berlin. From content partnerships to an ever-expanding TV line-up, there was a great deal of exciting news, but one aspect was a common theme: the Internet of Things (IoT) TV.

Up until now, the TV has been a device for viewing television shows and movies; as such, picture quality and viewing experience have always been two of the most important features of the device. Unsurprisingly, these core values are not likely to change in the future, especially at the dawn of the 4K UHD and even 8K resolution era.

Samsung also disclosed its strategy to expand the value of TV with IoT while maintaining its leadership position in core areas such as picture quality. Furthermore, Samsung illustrated the concept of IoT TV in a storytelling format via an eye-catching display of six glass showcases. These displays illustrated what a day with IoT TV might be like, from the early hours of morning to bedtime.

Creating New Value of TV with IoT

So what can one expect from the future TV? First, upon waking, the morning news, weather forecast and traffic information fill its screen, all the while displaying the user’s schedule for the day. With IoT TV, the user can use voice controls to open the window blinds or power on the air purifier and air conditioner, which had already been gauging the air conditions inside the house.

After the user returns home from work, the TV and audio system automatically start, playing his or her favorite song. Even the lighting and temperature settings automatically adjust to optimal conditions.

Samsung also suggested that television can be a family communication tool. As demonstrated in the IoT showcase, all Mom has to say is, “Dinner’s ready,” and the TV and audio installed throughout the house will signal everyone in the family to head to the kitchen.

Additionally, the TV acts as the family’s control center, checking the status of all surrounding appliances, such as the baby monitors, washing machine and even the doorbell. The system can also manage notifications by reporting them in a prioritized order based on the user’s life patterns.

Another part of the IoT showcase presented a home where the TV identifies programs being watched and provides a viewing environment customized for each type of content. When playing movies, for examples, the TV dims the lights and shifts the audio to movie mode to deliver a richer, grander sound, creating a cinema-like experience in the comfort of the user’s living room.

Finally, recognizing the “Good Night” command, the audio system will turn off the lights, lower the blinds and switch the air conditioner to a comfortable temperature for sleeping.

This is one way Samsung envisions how the future of TV will positively impact our lives. But if a company only looks to the future, it cannot be a genuine leader of industry. Therefore, a company must constantly strengthen its core customer value of presence.

Upgrading the viewing experience

As such, Samsung remains forever committed to enhancing the viewing experience and has recently teamed up with Netflix, Amazon, Wuaki, Chili, Strefa VoD, Videoland, Videoload, TVN, Viaplay and European broadcast partners to enrich the UHD ecosystem.

Also, Samsung’s SUHD TVs are capable of displaying High Dynamic Range (HDR) picture quality—an industry first—which features greater contrast, brighter colors, intricate shadow detail and distinct highlights. Overall, the picture appears richer, more vivid and more authentic than ever before. Furthermore, users can enjoy this superior picture quality on Samsung’s 28 curved SUHD TVs ranging in size from 48-inch to 105-inch.

“Through IoT operated by TV and audio, people will be able to experience a more convenient, productive and enjoyable smart home,” said Min Lee, Vice President of the Visual Display Division at Samsung Electronics. “But Samsung will never compromise with constraining ultimate picture quality and viewing experience.”
