[In-Depth Look] Finding out How the New Samsung Notebook Odyssey Keeps Its Cool

Perhaps one of the hardest missions for gaming laptop users to tackle is overheating. Some even call this “the battle of heat” because it slows down the gaming performance of a laptop that also makes it difficult to clear.

 

On May 16, Samsung Electronics released the new Samsung Notebook Odyssey in the United States. Loaded with a dual cooling system to maximize heat-dispensing capacity, it has cool specifications such as the 8th Generation Intel Core i7 processor with six cores, NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 2060 graphics card and others. Samsung Newsroom looked into the updated Notebook Odyssey with a thermal imaging camera to see how it deals with a heated gaming session.

 

Formidable Dual Cooling and Penta-Heat Pipe

 

Let’s explore the latest Samsung Notebook Odyssey’s overwhelming cooling system. On the bottom of the laptop, users will find a sophisticated dual cooling system that ensures efficient heat control.

 

The Notebook Odyssey has two cooling pans that dispense heat while absorbing the air from outside. There are 83 blades (a form of wings) in the new Notebook Odyssey – 2.9 times more than in the previous model.

 

Moreover, the updated Notebook Odyssey demonstrates 15 percent stronger airflow by reducing the thickness of the blades by a third (0.25㎜). This is how the Notebook Odyssey ensures the best performance of the laptop by removing internal heat, while quickly absorbing fresh air on the top and the bottom.

 

 

Thermal Imaging Shows the Samsung Notebook Odyssey at Work

Some would wonder whether a laptop could address heating issues without the performance of a desktop. So Samsung Newsroom played a first-person shooter video game “Battlefield V” on the Samsung Notebook Odyssey to put all doubts to rest. One of the first things that we noticed was the System Status Dashboard that allows users to check the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) temperature, Frame Per Second (FPS), CPU temperature and aspects while playing games in real time.

 

 

The temperature of the GPU and the CPU stood at 72℃ and 81℃ respectively (refer to the left picture above). We also measured the external temperature of the laptop with a thermal imaging camera to see how hot the user would feel. The hottest part was the center of the hinge (between the screen and keyboard) which was 26.8℃ (refer to the upper left of the right picture). The user barely felt the heat on the laptop because the highest temperature of the left hand on the keyboard was 31.2℃ (the highest temperature is in white color on thermal imaging camera).

 

 

While playing the game for about 30 minutes, the temperature of the GPU and CPU peaked at 79℃ and 91℃ respectively (refer to the left picture above). The thermal imaging camera, on the other hand, recorded 34.2℃ in maximum (refer to the right picture above) on the center of the keyboard (the most frequently used area). The laptop gets heat to some extent after some time, but it hardly had an impact on game playing as it stayed mostly on the upper part of the keyboard.

 

 

Given its portability, when gaming laptop users are to move, they close the laptop and carry it around with one hand. Therefore, it is important to check the temperature of the laptop’s back and the heat remaining on the table through a thermal imaging camera. The peak temperature was 34.3℃ (refer to the left picture above) on the back center of the new Odyssey after playing the game. The edges of the laptop were far cooler than the middle. After removing the laptop, the remaining heat on the table was 28℃ (refer to the right picture above) which is cool enough to hold the product with a bare hand.

 

 

Another reason why users of the new Samsung Notebook Odyssey don’t feel the heat is because of the laptop’s unique ventilation system. The product is designed to absorb fresh air from its bottom and keyboard, and then expel warm air through the back and sides of the laptop so that the heat doesn’t reach to the touchpad and user’s face.

 

A Shortcut Key Ushers in a Whole New World: Odyssey Mode

 

Another exclusive feature of the updated Notebook Odyssey is Odyssey Mode. Users can start using this feature by pressing Fn and F11 simultaneously in the middle of playing games once them saved different profiles for various types of games in advance. Odyssey Mode allows them to access features and options such as Beast Mode, an optimal resolution in accordance with a game genre, Black Equalizer, Dolby Atmos to capture subtle sound, and enabling or disabling the Windows key and touchpad.

 

 

Beast Mode enhances the desktop-like performance of the NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 2060 graphics card. The FPS (refer to the upper right of the picture above) ranged 80 to 90 before starting Beast Mode. Once the users enable the Beast Mode while they are in the middle of playing the game, the FPS increases and movements on display seem livelier.

 

 

Black Equalizer allows users to control the black levels of the display from 0 to 100 percent. They can clearly see the differences between 20 percent (basic mode), 60 percent (profile 1) and 90 percent (profile 2). If users adjust the shades and brightness that they feel comfortable with, it would be helpful to find enemies hiding in various places. Modulating black levels according to the backdrops of games such as a canyon, plain, the sky, etc., can be a way of improving gaming performance.
