Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced its next generation of commercial displays that feature AI-powered solutions at Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2025.

The Samsung Color E-Paper delivers new levels of energy efficiency, while the AI features in SmartThings Pro and the Interactive Display increase the intelligence, control and usability of business-focused screens. In addition, the supersized 115” Smart Signage screen brings a new level of immersive visuals to life. All of these innovative solutions are being displayed at ISE, in booth 3F500.

“For commercial displays, it is crucial to address the market’s demand for energy efficiency and simple device management, while at the same time meeting the public’s desire for immersive experiences,” said Hoon Chung, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “Our latest innovations, including the near-zero power Samsung Color E-Paper and advanced AI capabilities brought by all the models, showcase our commitment to pioneering new markets and providing transformative business solutions worldwide.”

Samsung Color E-Paper Brings Greater Energy Efficiency and Flexibility

Samsung Color E-Paper (EMDX model) redefines energy-efficient digital signage by combining digital ink with innovative full-color e-paper technology. This ultra-low power, lightweight and slim display serves as an eco-conscious alternative to traditional analog and paper-based promotional materials while delivering the high visibility and functionality that businesses demand.

Leveraging advanced digital ink technology, the EMDX operates at 0.00W power when displaying static images, while consuming significantly less energy during image transitions compared to traditional digital signage, resulting in substantial cost savings.[1] The ultra-slim and lightweight design ensures effortless installation, while the range of sizes — 13″ (1,600 x 1,200); 25″ (3,200 x 1,800); 32″ QHD (2,560 x 1,440); and an outdoor version that is 75″ 5K (5,120 x 2,880) — are optimized to cater to diverse business needs. The Color E-Paper also includes a rechargeable 5000mAh battery, two USB-C ports for charging and data transfer, 8GB of memory, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support for enhanced connectivity.

For seamless device management, a dedicated mobile app[2] allows users to remotely operate displays, schedule wake-up and sleep times, and even set playlists with predefined intervals. Samsung VXT (Visual eXperience Transformation) further simplifies content operation with a feature exclusive to the Samsung Color E-Paper. A specialized algorithm optimizes content visibility for the display and includes a preview function to ensure content and color are accurate before deployment.

Content management is made simple through the mobile app and Samsung VXT, with businesses also able to use their own solutions through Tizen Enterprise APIs, which enable easy integration with existing management systems.

Moreover, as part of Samsung’s ongoing commitment to a sustainable future, the cover of the Color E-Paper is made from over 50% recycled plastics, while its packaging is made entirely from paper.

AI Features Bring New Intelligence and Control to SmartThings Pro and Interactive Display

In 2025, SmartThings Pro, Samsung’s hyper-connected business-to-business (B2B) management platform, brings enhanced AI and automation capabilities to improve operational efficiency.[3]

The platform offers Interactive View, which uses AI to convert 2D floor plans into 3D images of business premises. This 3D visualization makes it easier to understand and navigate spaces intuitively, enabling business operators to manage connected devices with ease.

SmartThings Pro also features advanced automation controls, allowing businesses to adjust settings — such as power, volume and brightness — based on pre-set conditions like ambient lighting, room occupancy and store operating hours. These automated adjustments save time while ensuring devices are optimized for their environments. When using SmartThings Pro on displays, switching between content streams is equally seamless. This is because users are able to effortlessly change channels or input sources for a streamlined experience.[4]

Additionally, Samsung Smart Signage features CryptoCore, a FIPS 140-3-certified encryption module that safeguards sensitive authentication data for IoT connections and ensures that these connections between devices remain secure.[5]

At ISE, Samsung is also showcasing the 2025 Interactive Display (WAFX-P model), powered by Android OS 15 and featuring new AI capabilities that enhance education and collaboration opportunities.

The WAFX-P model provides AI capabilities, featuring Circle to Search, which enables users to easily search for images or translate text directly on-screen, and AI Summary, which automatically generates concise recaps of lectures or meetings.

Supersized 4K Smart Signage Redefines Immersion

Samsung’s 115” 4K Smart Signage (QHFX model) leads the industry in advancing supersized displays, offering businesses bold new ways to captivate audiences and transform environments with immersive visuals.

Building on the success of last year’s 105” QPDX-5K model, which features a 21:9 aspect ratio optimized for video conferencing, the 115” QHFX delivers greater versatility with its 16:9 aspect ratio, and its multi-view functionality — which supports up to four split windows — makes it ideal for simultaneously showcasing multiple content streams. This adaptability makes it suitable for a wide range of applications, from meeting rooms to luxurious retail stores requiring premium, large-scale displays.

The QHFX also eliminates visible borders commonly associated with traditional video walls, creating an uninterrupted display that engages viewers and enhances any environment. Featuring QLED 4K resolution, 700 nits of maximum brightness and Tizen OS 8.0, it ensures vibrant visuals and smooth performance. The QHFX integrates seamlessly with SmartThings Pro and Samsung VXT, while additional user-friendly features — like a built-in handle for easy installation and VESA[6] compatibility — provide businesses with flexibility and convenience.

The challenges in this ever-changing world have led to an accelerated demand for digital transformation in recent years. Now more than ever, there is a strong need to adapt to and evolve alongside multiple waves of disruption.

In fact, many business leaders whom I have spoken to said that the volatile business climate has not reduced the appetite for organizations to transform. On the contrary, businesses are finding greater urgency for change across a broad spectrum of activities, from redefining their service offerings to uplifting customer experiences.

Samsung Kiosks integrated into KFC Philippines’ restaurants

Another example is KFC Philippines, a quick service restaurant serving its secret recipe fried chicken at close to 400 stores nationwide. In 2017, its digital transformation journey first started with the integration of more than 1,000 Samsung large-format displays pre-installed with the MagicINFO platform, for digital menu boards across all stores. This helped KFC improve customer experiences by catering more visually appealing images, whilst ensuring their operations teams could continually update their menu board and promotions effectively and efficiently.

In 2022, KFC accelerated its digital transformation journey by integrating Samsung KM24A kiosks in restaurants and OM55B outdoor displays in drive-thru stores. By the end of 2024, 800 kiosks and over 150 OMB55B outdoor displays will also be deployed to minimize queues and increase order accuracy, and further elevate customer experiences.

A New Era of Innovation

The successful deployment story of KFC Philippines is a reminder of the risk-taking and innovation that are needed in today’s dynamic and competitive marketplace, whether in the F&B, retail, hospitality, or other sectors.

Staying ahead of the curve with our customers and partners means:

Having the urgency to take digital transformation to another level: With dynamic market conditions, agility is needed more than ever, with technology providing the crucial breakthrough in unlocking new value. As KFC discovered, digital technologies could radically open opportunities not possible before, enabling further growth.

Meeting the need for integrated solutions: While point solutions are attractive short-term options, larger and more complex challenges such as meeting sustainability goals require a more strategic and integrated approach. Similarly, to meet big market opportunities, such as winning over customers in the Gen Z and Gen M demographics, businesses have to redefine and transform their processes in a holistic rather than piecemeal fashion.

Not compromising on sustainability and security: Sustainability is now central to everything businesses do, from procuring to using energy efficiently and finally recycling their products from customers, post-purchase. Similarly, security has to be integrated into all parts of a digital business, ensuring that best practices are incorporated seamlessly to minimize risks while undergoing rapid digitalization at scale.

These sentiments were also shared amongst participants at the Samsung Display Tech Summit 2023, which was awarded Bronze for the “Best Brand Experience – B2B” event, at the prestigious Campaign Asia Pacific’s Event Marketing Awards 2024.

Held in October last year, the Summit was an immersive 2-day program in Seoul, South Korea, attended by enterprise customers and partners across the Southeast Asia and Oceania (SEAO) region. Here, we shared our technology vision while showcasing our latest display, IT and industrial solutions and services to help enterprises become more agile and competitive in the fast-evolving digital world.

An Integrated Approach to Big Challenges

With these same priorities in mind, Samsung is ready to help enterprise customers overcome their challenges and meet business goals with an entire ecosystem of products, services, and partners.

Through Samsung’s unifying offering for integrated IT and devices solutions and services, it is our company’s vision to help businesses in this region push the boundaries of what they can do and to enable the next dimension of digital transformation for organizations. The key here is seamlessly integrating end-to-end offerings in devices, services, and solutions to connect people and enable them to be more productive. In each area, Samsung is bringing its market leading expertise in technology and solutions.

Samsung has a wide range of devices such as the well-loved Galaxy series smartphones and devices that with industry-leading security innovations like Samsung Knox Matrix, infrastructure offerings from system air-conditioners to mobile networks as well as strong leadership positioning in display technologies. For the past 14 consecutive years, we have been an industry leader in the global signage market[1] by pushing innovation in LED and Micro LED technologies and also, developing a product strategy with a focus on sustainability that was recently recognized by System Contractor News, a leading audio and visual publication, through the Installation Product Awards for Most Innovative Sustainable Product Strategy in June 2023.

Combined with its solutions for device, display, content and smart building management, and enterprise grade Knox security services, Samsung can provide a holistic portfolio of seamlessly integrated offerings such as eco-conscious innovations showcased at CES 2024, to create the modern digital enterprise founded on commitments to security and sustainability.

Such an integrated approach would benefit, for example, an organization that wants to create a new company-wise workspace and is considering various options to not just optimize spaces but also enable new hybrid work experiences. A prime case study is the Jeju Dream Tower, where Samsung has provided smart signage for lobbies and rooms, TVs for all hotel rooms, central air-conditioning solutions, room management and mobile device systems.

For Every Business Need

Technology is crucial but only one part of the answer. To ensure that the various pieces of the puzzle come together to produce the desired results, Samsung works with trusted and experienced partners to transform products and services into end-to-end solutions.

Each industry is different and so are the needs. This is why Samsung also provides an array of solutions, products and services specifically designed for various verticals, ensuring that they are tailored to deliver results desired in each industry.

[1] Samsung Electronics achieved a 31.1% share of sales in the commercial display market in 2022, according to market researcher Omdia, ranking first. With this, Samsung Electronics proves that it is the strongest player in the commercial display market, and maintained the No. 1 position for 14 consecutive years from 2009 to 2022.” (Note: Consumer TVs, along with Commercial Lite and Hospitality TVs used for signage are excluded.)

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today at Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2024 in Barcelona is showcasing how SmartThings will bolster its B2B displays to shape the future of business connectivity. Samsung’s “SmartThings for Business” exhibition emphasizes the new advancements that the cutting-edge internet-of-things (IoT) platform will offer, as well as Samsung’s commitment to providing more connected, easy-to-control digital signage across industries.

“In a commercial display sector where operational efficiency is key, Samsung digital signage is leveraging SmartThings to deliver next-gen connectivity and features to organizations of all sizes,” said SW Yong, President and Head of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “This further expansion of the SmartThings ecosystem will serve to elevate experiences for customers and partners from a wide variety of industries.”

How Businesses Can Leverage Connected Tech Through SmartThings – From the Smart Store to Smart Office

At the event, Samsung is showcasing how SmartThings enables business owners to leverage their digital signage to connect and gain more control of their smart devices across various landscapes. By offering the SmartThings connectivity feature to commercial display products such as Smart Signage and Hotel TVs, users can experience the convenience of hyper-connectivity in their business environments. These changes will include Samsung smart devices, as well as other devices that support the industry’s latest IoT specifications, Matter and the Home Connectivity Alliance (HCA).

Through the application of SmartThings to various business environments, Samsung contributes to the more efficient management of space and energy by transforming places of business into interconnected smart spaces. These connectivity improvements have been designed to benefit all types of business customers, from small and mid-sized business owners to enterprises. Examples of the smart spaces — including a smart store, smart office and smart hotel — are on display at Samsung’s booth at ISE 2024.

With the Routines feature, users can create desired environments by setting the optimal lighting, temperature, humidity, and air quality in advance, and easily maintain them over time with automated space management. For instance, a smart store can automatically turn the power supply on and off to align menu boards and lighting with operating hours.

Plus, SmartThings AI Energy Mode helps business owners stay eco-conscious by reducing energy usage through efficient asset management and advanced monitoring, such as turning off connected devices or dimming the lights during the day depending on power usage, occupancy and time.

To cater to diverse B2B customer needs, Samsung has expanded the SmartThings Enterprise API[1] for business owners. By leveraging the API, customers can easily connect SmartThings to their own management system and create a customized solution optimized for different scenarios or dashboards with the information they want. The customizable device ecosystem ensures seamless connectivity across a wide range of devices and enhances system reliability. A separate application for installers also makes the installation process easy, paying attention to the unique needs of B2B customers with different device owners.

In the case of a hotel or a conference room, where the device owner and the user may be different, the device owner can generate a web URL to share SmartThings features with the end users. This way, hotel guests and conference room users can easily enjoy the SmartThings experience without having to install an extra app. The device owner can also specify the use of authorization and duration of the connected device when generating a web URL.

Marking a significant step forward in connected technology for businesses, SmartThings for Business is set to be globally available during the first half of 2024. The platform will open new possibilities for efficient, smart management of various smart devices across all industries, offering tailored and intelligent device management solutions that cater to the unique needs of diverse business environments.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. is showcasing the future of sustainable digital signage at Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2023 in Barcelona, with new technologies and eco-conscious efforts guided by the company’s new environmental strategy.

“We are committed to ensuring everyday sustainability throughout our signage portfolio and finding meaningful ways to minimize our environmental impact as part of our journey toward a more circular economy,” said Hoon Chung, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “We are excited to showcase our vision for how smart signage can help enable everyday sustainability while unlocking incredible new opportunities for businesses at ISE.”

Building Technologies that contribute to Eco-Conscious Digital Signage

At ISE this year, Samsung will highlight the company’s sustainability initiatives based on its new environmental strategy announced in September 2022. Pre-registered visitors will be able to see Samsung’s environmental vision come to life, with the sustainability zone at the booth showcasing the eco-conscious practices applied to digital signage products. These practices are based on the five stages of the product lifecycle – sourcing, production, distribution, using, and recycling.

Samsung’s 2023 smart signage products (QHC, QMC, QBC) are approximately 40% slimmer than previous models at 28.5mm thickness. Through this, the number of shipping containers required for logistics after production can be reduced by more than 20%[1] compared to the previous model. In addition, smart signage products support automatic screen brightness adjustment by adopting an illuminance sensor which reacts to surrounding light conditions, helping users manage their power consumption automatically. Plus, the resin used for the rear covers contains 10% of Post-Consumer Materials (PCM).

▲ The Remote Management function will enable users to simply monitor the number of connected devices and easily manage different devices, as well as remotely control settings such as power ON/OFF and screen brightness.

Samsung’s cloud-based MagicINFO solution enhances Remote Management and helps to manage multiple signage displays and a variety of content efficiently. The Remote Management function will enable users to simply monitor the number of connected devices, their types and errors, and easily manage different devices, as well as remotely control settings such as screen brightness. Plus, this solution will offer other features including device health diagnostics, informing users of issues related to cable connection, device temperature and network disruption.

At ISE 2023, Samsung will also be running a separate solution seminar zone, introducing visitors to the company’s new and differentiated technologies. Its soon-to-be-announced cloud signage platform will offer a wide range of energy-saving solutions that empower users to manage and reduce their energy usage. New solutions include real-time power consumption monitoring, timed luminance scheduling, remote brightness adjustment and automatic device management. This comprehensive platform will integrate and connect LCD signage, LED signage, and B2B TVs to provide a seamless user experience.

Introducing New 2023 Outdoor Signage — Large LED Screens and Small-Sized Displays Unveiled

Samsung is announcing new signage products at ISE 2023. Firstly, the company will release its 2023 outdoor LED signage[2] (Model Name: XHB series), built for the sports industry and spectacular landmark locations.

The XHB series is available in four models: P6 (6mm pixel pitch), P8, P10 and P16, all of which produce light at an astonishing peak brightness of 8,000 nits exceptionally clear and stunning picture quality – even when in direct sunlight. Furthermore, the standardized module design of the XHB guarantees flexible design and installation, including Concave (maximum of 2500R curvature), Convex, S shape, Fascia, and 90 °L type.

With a design twice as thin as the previous model, the XHB series can be installed in a seamless way, with the installation time also reduced by more than half for improved convenience. Furthermore, improved energy efficiency means the XHB reduces power consumption by over 15% compared to its predecessor and can reduce approximately 2,492 tons of CO2 emissions every year, which is equivalent to the amount of CO2 sequestered by about 290,000 30 year old pine trees in one year[3].

The XHB series will be available for ordering starting from ISE 2023, with some of the first models already being installed as electronic scoreboards at the home stadiums of globally recognized US Baseball teams, the New York Mets and The World Champion Houston Astros ahead of the 2023 season.

Finally, Samsung is introducing a small-sized, 24-inch outdoor signage display (Model Name: OH24B) to cater to the electric vehicle (EV) charger market. As demand for EVs continues to rise, it is important to provide solutions that enable a more connected, enjoyable charging experience, while providing upselling opportunities for businesses and retailers.

The outdoor signage excels in both durability and outdoor visibility across a wide range of diverse conditions. This high resilience and versatility are provided by peak brightness of 1,500 nits, and a slim, metal design, as well as water, dust and liquid resistance (IP66, Ingress Protection), and IK-10 Level glass protection. A high temperature, rigid liquid crystal panel is also applied to provide further durability even under strong sunlight. In addition, the display offers removable Wi-Fi/Bluetooth accessories which

can optimize the receiving rate based on installation conditions. Finally, the small signage boasts unparalleled energy efficiency with the industry’s lowest power consumption[4] (a maximum of 90W) above 20-inches, perfect for an EV charging station which requires 24/7 operation and information delivery.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced that the company has implemented new environmentally sustainable processes and initiatives, including low-impact product manufacturing practices and resource acquisition at the recent Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2022 which was held in Barcelona. These new changes join the company’s existing efforts to reduce its environmental footprint across its product portfolio.

As part of Samsung’s “Together for Tomorrow” vision, the company has applied recycled materials in its selected monitor and digital signage products to minimize resource waste. Samsung is now using more recycled materials in its monitor and digital signage products, including the rear cover of its monitors and digital signage to increase resource circularity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Digital signage solutions including the 2022 Smart Signage also received certified energy efficiency grades that rise to new industry standards. Samsung also has incorporated eco-conscious packaging featuring recycled materials in all signage products since 2021.

To improve both resource and energy efficiency, Samsung is using a SoC (System on Chip) solution that, when applied to the monitors and signage, it allows content to be displayed without any additional devices, saving both waste and energy. Plus, Samsung has extended its product lifespan with enhanced durability to further minimize waste.

In recognition of its efforts for product efficiency, Samsung has earned an ENERGY STAR certification[1], in addition to an EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) certification for its energy efficiency improvements and recycled plastic use in its 2022 Smart Signage lineup (QHB, QMB, QBB).

Samsung was also the first in its industry to achieve the reducing CO2 label, certified by the Carbon Trust, for its LCD Signage lineup (LH55QHB), LED signage (LH012IWA) and Business Monitor (LS34A65). In addition, Samsung has developed and applied a new material, made with repurposed ocean-bound plastics, to the 2022 high resolution monitor S8 to reduce marine waste.

The retail environment is highly competitive, with retailers constantly looking for better and more efficient ways to catch the eyes of potential customers. Amid this climate, the benefits of digital displays are well-established, with their impact seen across retail providers from shopping malls to quick service restaurants (QSRs). In the restaurant sphere in particular, digital displays have been found to deliver improved visibility and an elevated overall brand experience compared to analog displays.

But digital signage is good for more than just the consumer. The technology has also been shown to reduce costs for businesses. Below, we explore the wide-reaching benefits of going digital.

Putting the Benefits Into Numbers

When we compare using analog and digital menu boards in restaurants, it becomes clear that utilizing Samsung SMART Signage provides a significant advantage over the use of static lightbox menus. While installing digital signage causes businesses to initially incur slightly higher upfront costs, it has been shown that those businesses receive a higher return on investment within two years of installation. Five years on from the installation of digital signage businesses stand to save around USD10,000 per store according to Samsung’s ‘Improving ROI with digital menu boards’ white paper.

In Samsung’s whitepaper, it is shown that if a QSR brand with 250 stores nationwide were to utilize static signage, it would require a total of six lightbox-style analog menu boards at each location, in addition to six printed menu boards. These boards typically need to be replaced every two months, while the fluorescent lamps for lightboxes and electrical ballasts must be replaced every 18 months. In addition to the annual maintenance fee this all adds up to a considerable cumulative cost. However, the use of digital menu boards immediately eliminates maintenance costs as well as the expenses related to creating new printouts for static menu boards.

Digital Signage for Versatility

But the savings are only the beginning, with Samsung SMART Signage able to deliver a variety of content from images to dynamic videos, all in vivid, vibrant colors. SMART Signage is also engineered to operate 24/7, providing night and day visibility that is unmatched by analog displays and ensuring that customers are deeply engaged with content. These stellar displays are supported by Samsung’s powerful MagicINFO content management solution, which enables users to conveniently manage all of their visual signage from one centralized location. This increased flexibility allows businesses to quickly and conveniently update promotions, offerings and messages to reflect consumer trends and important events, alleviating the slowdowns and missed sales opportunities brought about by businesses having to have their static assets made and delivered.

As outlined above, while the initial installation cost for digital signage is slightly higher, it has been shown that businesses that upgrade from analog to digital signage save around USD 10,000 per store after five years. For a business that operates 250 stores, this equates to an estimated USD 2.5 million in savings from using digital menu boards. And that is before the benefits from potential increases in sales and improved customer experiences are taken into account.

Beyond the Money

But the benefits of digital signage go far beyond just savings and better-looking menus. Digital displays equip a business to evolve and create opportunities that just aren’t possible with analog alternatives. Consumers are constantly looking for the most up-to-date information and best promotions, and the ability of digital menu boards to be updated in real-time to reflect demand, trends and unexpected events allows businesses to act quickly and efficiently.

What’s more, the time required to update menus and other forms of content is drastically reduced with SMART Signage. The time between starting design planning for content and actually seeing it displayed to customers can realistically be as short as two weeks with digital signage, while simpler modifications such as updating product information or complying with new calorie count posting requirements can be made in as little as two hours. Best of all, once these changes are finalized they can be distributed across the entire signage network instantaneously.

This dynamic, in-the-moment approach provides more engaging experiences for customers and drives both satisfaction and sales. In QSRs in particular, purchasing decisions are often made on the spot. Thus, customers in this environment must be equipped with the most up-to-date and accurate information to ensure that they make purchasing decisions that they are happy with. Digital signage allows them to do just this.

Samsung SMART Signage installed at McDonald’s stores in Korea

The benefits of digital displays go far beyond better looking signage. SMART Signage is the most efficient and effective solution when it comes to saving on costs, introducing versatility into the signage and fostering genuine and mutually beneficial consumer relationships. As the age of information continues to progress, Samsung SMART Signage is providing the platform to ensure that the retail sphere is equipped to be a leader when it comes to consumer communications.

The current global climate is prompting behavioral shifts across the world, requiring both consumers and businesses to adapt to new ways of life. One result of this has been a renewed appreciation for the importance of digital communications, with the digital OOH market poised to grow by 8.72 billion USD between 2020 and 2023.

Below, I explore some industries and businesses that have a unique opportunity to adapt to these changing times by utilizing digital displays to provide customers with full access to the information they need, when they need it.

Consumers on the Move

These days, consumer-brand interactions are defined by reduced facetime and increased communication through screens and digital displays. These shifting habits have presented an opportunity for retail and quick service restaurant (QSR) businesses to make use of eye-catching visual solutions that deliver information, improve engagement and build brand affinity.

One example of this is drive-through restaurants, which in March of this year generated $8.3 billion in the U.S., up from $8 billion over the same period in 2019 (reported by the New York Times, citing data from NPD Group). Companies with drive-through capabilities have gained a strong competitive edge, leading QSR providers to commit more resources to expanding drive-through capabilities and digital aspects of the consumer experience.

In South Korea, Samsung has been commissioned to supply SMART Outdoor Signage for the Starbucks Uiwang Cheonggye drive-through store, in addition to all future Starbucks drive-thru locations – which account for 40% of the approximately 120 new stores that open in Korea every year. SMART outdoor signage is set to play a pivotal role in how consumers engage with brands going forward, and with IP56-rated water and dust resistance, as well as excellent visibility – even under direct sunlight – Samsung solutions are ready to answer the call.

Increased Collaboration

In these times, video conferencing has quickly become an important platform for communicating with friends, family, customers and businesses, resulting in a record 62 million video conferencing app downloads in the week of March 14-21 alone according to App Annie. Technologies like these that facilitate broader collaboration have been praised as the future of work, but they are now facing their greatest test to date. While some solutions have thrived, others have not adapted as well, demonstrating the importance of establishing intelligent, reliable, seamless and visually impactful solutions.

For many, the concept of the ‘workplace’ has recently shifted from the office to the home, making the ability to reliably share content and information electronically more important than ever before.

Samsung’s Webex on Flip solution provides an effective and secure combination of video conferencing and visual display technology. The whiteboarding features of the Flip enable pen-to-paper like writing and editing, while also facilitating quick and convenient document access and wireless screensharing for better collaboration. Paired with Cisco’s leading video conferencing technology and protected by proprietary security features, Webex on Flip allows people working from multiple different locations to come together and collaborate without limitations.

Leading the Way

As the role digital signage plays in our lives becomes better understood, so too does the potential that signage technology can have moving forward. Visual displays are evolving in a range of ways – from featuring higher resolutions to incorporating intelligent cloud-based, AI-powered management software. These innovations and more will prove essential if industries are to keep providing the powerful tools needed to maintain communication and improve collaboration amid the new landscape in which we find ourselves.

Having led the digital signage industry for the past 11 consecutive years, Samsung has a well-rounded understanding of the demands of businesses and their customers, and is able to develop tailored solutions to meet their diverse needs. What started out as simple outdoor displays to replace unreliable analog signage, has become the powerful visual platform that is at the heart of communication for facilities like airports, shopping malls, city squares and sports stadiums. Samsung is excited about the future, and will continue to play a leading role in shaping and improving the ways we communicate.

InfoComm 2019 was held from June 12 to 14 in Orlando, Florida. Those attending not only received an overview of recent trends in the global display industry, but they were also able to experience the latest innovations in display technology firsthand.

During the event, Samsung introduced various usage scenarios that demonstrated how digital signage could be installed in a variety of environments, ranging from classrooms to retail and offices. Here, to wrap up the 10 Years of Signage Innovation series, we’ll take a look at exciting new possibilities for display technology – some of which are already part of our daily lives.

Three ‘Hot Spots’ at InfoComm 2019

The corner of Samsung’s InfoComm 2019 booth that showcased The Wall Luxury transformed the event space into a movie theater. A modular display based on Micro LED technology, The Wall Luxury transcends the limitations of conventional displays in terms of size, screen ratio and resolution; measures only 29.9mm thick; and features a bezel-less design that allows it to seamlessly merge into the wall and the living room.

When the screen is off, it displays media arts or virtual wallpapers that transform The Wall Luxury into an art piece. As one attendee shared, “Pixels are invisible to the eye even when seen from up close.” Attendees also expressed excitement for the impending surge in demand for luxury home cinema products.

Have you ever wished that a detailed product description would pop up in the background automatically, without requiring you to call for assistance? Samsung MagicINFO 7 is an all-in-one system that manages advertising content on digital signage so consumers can view product information right away.

A new AI-based algorithm enables the system to display the right advertisement at the right time through customization. So for example, when shopping, if you pick up a certain cosmetic product from the shelf, the system will recognize the sensor under the product and instantly display the product information (as seen in the image above). As the system is based on the big data that includes shopping patterns of store visitors and their moving routes, there will be a countless number of scenarios for the system to use.

In meetings, where opinions are shared and decisions are made, easy and efficient communication between participants is crucial. Samsung’s new Flip 65” streamlines these situations by offering users a 65-inch touchscreen with a fast response speed. Visitors who tested out the display remarked on how impressed they were by its ability to recreate the effects of brush strokes. Not only that, the product also features a No Gap Wall Mount that allows it to be easily fixed to a meeting room wall so offices can utilize their space more efficiently.

When Advanced Technologies Enter Our Lives

Such advanced display technologies will completely change many aspects of our lives. What we have only seen in science-fiction movies is gradually becoming reality. Transformations in the office, classroom and restaurants – places where people spend a lot of their time – show us how far we have come in terms of display technology advancements.

Here we see a group meeting at a global company in which two teams from the company’s San Jose and Seoul offices are video conferencing using Cisco’s Webex Room Kit.1 The display’s 4K resolution allows the participants to clearly see the letters on the screen so they can properly discuss the design.

*Sample image

Technological innovations have changed how we work. People have become more inclined to work from home or hold remote meetings, and employ other forms of work that transcend limitations in time and space to make the work process more productive. Samsung’s SMART Signage Solution reflects this trend, and is helping to create ‘smart offices’ in partnership with Cisco.

Thanks to Samsung SMART signage and Cisco’s Webex Room Kit solution, which helps meeting participants in different locations feel as if they’re in the same room, consumers will be able to create virtual meeting rooms without any hassle.

In a middle school math class, a teacher takes advantage of visual aids with complex tables and graphs using Samsung’s Flip. The display helps the teacher conduct a collaborative class, rather than a one-sided lecture, by enabling him to pull up digital textbook files to solve problems with students. Everything written on the screen during class is sent to the students via email, so they don’t have to worry about writing everything down for future reference.

*Sample image

Samsung replaced the blackboard with the introduction of the Flip in order to create a new type of learning environment. One that connects the classroom to new information in real time, and keeps students interested by helping teachers prepare a variety of class materials. This ‘live blackboard’ will help teachers foster a lively class environment that encourages students’ creativity.

For someone whose favorite lunch is a cheeseburger from the place down the street from her office, the trip to the burger joint becomes a daily routine. She’s there today too, as usual. Because she visits every day at around the same time, her favorite set automatically pops up on the kiosk when she is ready to order. When she is ready to pay for her food, the coupon stamps she gathered during the past week pop up as well, automatically applying a discount to her bill.

*Sample image

The role of digital signage in shopping will also expand to the point that it will act as an ‘AI secretary’ that customizes the shopping experience for each customer. In the past, displays were a one-way communication method that offered information to the audience. Now, they deliver customized information according to customers’ behaviors and preferences. Scenarios that cater to the needs of both customers and retailers can be shown on the display, such as an automated message announcing a 20 percent discount when a fruit stall wants to sell off excess inventory.

“We will provide more advanced forms of communication by implementing touch functionality and sensors, as well as a display content management system and analysis function,” said Kay Hwangbo, Signage Products Product Planner at Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business.

A Display that Transcends Limitations

We may not have noticed each and every change, but digital signage is now deeply immersed in our lives, connecting different parts of it together <See 10 Years of Signage Innovation: Episode ①>. For the last 10 years, Samsung Electronics has continuously pushed technological boundaries and maintained its leadership of signage innovation <See 10 Years of Signage Innovation: Episode ②>.

Going forward, Samsung will continue to lead the industry with innovative digital signage solutions. The focus will be about thinking outside of the conventional notion that signage is a one-sided advertisement that feeds information to the audience. The first step is to advance interactive communication that thoroughly analyzes customers’ interests, needs and behaviors.

“The industrial display business boasts huge growth potential,” said Seog-gi Kim, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business. “The industry will become a broader B2B business that covers everything from display hardware to software, solutions, consulting, content development, remastering and more.”

The signage industry started out with simple, outdoor advertisement displays. Fast-forward to today’s modern digital era, signage has evolved into a comprehensive communication platform used daily for multiple business functions and to deliver information in public places.

Samsung Electronics has been at the forefront of this signage evolution – leading the display market for ten consecutive years while pushing the industry further, through a number of technological transformations. Samsung has overcome numerous challenges along the journey and has introduced innovative, new products year after year.

Samsung Newsroom has explored how Samsung SMART Signage has evolved in the last decade and tracked its journey through to today.

Making an Airport Debut

“What is the necessity for installing large digital signage indoors just to display information? And why is this different from or better than a TV screen?” This was the most frequently asked question for Sungtae Lee in the early 2000s when digital signage first emerged. Lee was one of the trailblazers in designing commercial signage products at Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business.

In many conversations, before explaining how Samsung products were different from the others, he had to introduce the value proposition of digital signage and the different ways of utilizing the products: “We had a firm belief that digital signage would profoundly change the way people communicate. But it was not accepted as easily as we had initially thought,” noted Lee.

Samsung Electronics installed the world’s largest indoor airport LED signage, covering a total of 1,012 square meters, at the New Istanbul Airport in 2018.

Perceptions changed as digital signage began to create new markets by converging with new technologies. For Samsung, this convergence and opportunity started with airports, according to Lee.

An airport is a large and complex structure that requires the processing of substantial amounts of information in real-time – from check-in counters to baggage claim. Naturally, digital signage products and solutions were inevitable. “Offering our proprietary software, Samsung was a pioneer in introducing a Flight Information Display System (FIDS) that was designed to remotely process video clips and deliver information through the data networks 24 hours a day. This implementation laid the groundwork for Samsung SMART Signage,” said Lee.

3.4 Times Bigger and 54 Percent Slimmer, a Decade of Efforts to Go Beyond the Limit

In the early 2000s, Samsung introduced its LCD signage, 32-inch in size. Comparing this early model to the 110-inch LCD signage, unveiled in 2014, the size of Samsung’s digital signage had increased by 3.4 times in a decade.

It became slimmer as well. Samsung’s latest 4K signage, introduced in 2019, is 49.7 mm thick. Compared to the first model, which was 109 mm thick, the thickness of Samsung’s digital signage has more than halved through the company’s extensive research and continuous efforts.

In addition, the locations to install digital signage are being diversified from airports and inside of buildings, to offices, clothing shops, bus stops, subway stations and large-sized outdoor billboards.

As Samsung digital signage expanded into different spaces, it required technologies that addressed the challenges presented by various environmental factors, including temperature, humidity and solar heat, such as UV rays and infrared rays.

This was how Samsung Magic Glass was born. By blocking reflected light, Samsung Magic Glass increased visibility and reduced infrared rays by 40 percent. “We adopted a distinctive heat protection technology to improve durability and also acquired high standards in waterproof, dustproof (IP56), and breakproof specifications (IK10). That’s why our digital signage works properly even with severe dust and harsh environmental conditions, and can also withstand a strong shock,” said Sehee Park responsible for planning outdoor products at the Visual Display Business’ Product Strategy Team.

Bigger and Brighter Samsung SMART Signage Leads the Trend

Samsung has shown its innovative leadership in the digital signage industry, most notably with the installation of its large-scale LED signage at the COEX Shopping Center in Seoul in March 2018. Connecting two walls using a single continuous screen with curved corners, the signage is comprised of approximately 31,000 LED display modules attached 10mm from each other, demonstrating an impressive level of precision and accuracy. This product is a perfect example to demonstrate Samsung’s expertise and leadership in digital signage technology.

“We incorporated an optimized waterproof solution into every connecting part of the display for maximum durability. Our proprietary picture quality processing technology allows the display to express colors vividly for a long period of time,” said Seungjae Soh at the Visual Display Business’ Product Strategy Team.

Additionally, by acquiring YESCO Electronics in 2015, a company specializing in commercial LED display, Samsung has solidified its leadership in the LED market.

Retail spaces have also presented opportunities for Samsung. Since outdoor signage is used to attract shoppers, it must immediately grab their attention and catch their eye, further demonstrating the importance of both vivid and vibrant colors.

To meet such needs, Samsung unveiled a high brightness signage lineup in various sizes. In particular, double-sided high brightness1 signage has been well-accepted by retail shops and Quick Service Restaurants (QSR), as it supports up to 3,000 nits for outdoor screens and 1,000 nits for indoor screens. Moreover, the latest 85˝ double-sided display can be installed at bus stops for street advertising, targeting commuters and passers-by.

In an ever-evolving industry, one of the latest trends is QLED 8K signage. Samsung is leading this innovation as well, as it was the first company to introduce an 82” ultra-high resolution 8K signage product, taking a step forward in signage innovation. Moreover, the AI-based quantum processor allows any video clip – no matter the resolution – to be converted into 8K resolution, providing a truly vivid expression of color. Samsung’s 8K product lineup is poised to expand its horizons in the second half of this year.

“There is a strong need for our latest 8K signage amongst luxury retail stores which want to display vivid images. In addition, thanks to our AI upscaling technology, which converts any content to 8K regardless of the original resolutions, the 8K signage is being well-received by customers. Just like we did in the last decade, we will always continue to provide industry-leading products and services,” stated Seog-gi Kim, Executive Vice President of the Enterprise Business Team, Samsung Electronics.

As digital signage is rapidly becoming a next-generation communication platform, Samsung is aiming to push forward with new solutions. Stay tuned to our next episode to discover the future of digital signage.
