Ways to Address Eye Strain From Too Much Screen Time

Technology is so tightly integrated into our lives that we often find ourselves being surrounded by displays in this time and age. From starting your day off by turning off the alarm and reading the morning news from your smartphone to working in the office with a monitor and ending the day with your favorite TV show, it is evident that displays have become an essential part of our daily lives.

 

As much as displays have enabled us to significantly improve our efficiency and productivity in many areas of our lives, we cannot deny the fact that they have their downsides too. Due to heavy usage of displays, it has resulted in a few health issues that were not commonly seen in the past. One of the most common issues is called computer vision syndrome (CVS), also known as digital eye strain, which causes a person to experience headaches, blurred vision, back pain, fatigue, eye strain, etc.

 

So, what can you do to protect your eyes from CVS? Check out a few useful tips below:

 

  1. Practice the 20-20-20 rule

When staring at your display, for every 20 minutes that pass, look away from your display towards a fixed point that is 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This acts as a great reminder to allow your eyes to take a break from staring at the display for too long and hence, helps to avoid eye fatigue.

 

  1. Ensure adequate room lighting and optimal display brightness and glare

Ensure that your room is adequately lit and is not too bright or dark. Avoid sitting in front of windows that bring in excessive sunlight or even indoors in areas that have harsh lighting. That aside, you could also choose to install blinds or curtains by the windows or install fewer lights indoors at places where you’ll more commonly use your display.

 

  1. Limit your screen time

Though it is challenging to keep our eyes off the screen most of the time, setting aside time is fundamental to address eye strain. It is especially crucial to disconnect before bedtime as the ‘blue light’ emitted from displays will ‘trick’ your mind into thinking it is daytime, which ultimately makes it more challenging for you to fall asleep.

 

  1. Upgrade your display

Another consideration is to upgrade to a display that can address eye strain directly. Older displays often cause flickers that contribute significantly to eye strain, even when it is hardly noticeable. Since we are facing our displays most of the time, upgrading to a display with high resolution, low flicker level, and low level of blue light emission is a wise choice.
