Samsung and ENERGY STAR: Creating an Everyday Sustainable Customer Journey
By Mark Newton, Head of Corporate Sustainability, Samsung Electronics America

At Samsung, sustainability is at the core of all we do. This year, our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint and preserving the planet for future generations is once again being celebrated by the EPA and ENERGY STAR. By receiving our tenth Excellence Award for Product Brand Owner, leading to our entry into the Sustained category. It is also our third Partner of the Year Award for facilities Energy Management, showing – that once again – our focus is on consumers while also doing our own part for the planet we all share.
Environmental responsibility is a critical part of our business strategy and our work with partners in government – like the EPA – are a central part of what we do. ENERGY STAR goes well beyond legal requirements for energy efficiency, and our certified energy-efficient products have contributed to consumers globally avoiding more than 334 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions over the past 10 years. While our dedication to sustainability has earned us 474 ENERGY STAR model family certifications across our product lines last year, including more than 80% of all home appliances sold in the US, we believe this is just the beginning. In 2023, we will work even harder to accelerate our positive impact, while helping our customers to achieve their sustainability goals Every Day. This commitment to people and to the planet – is just as bold as our business is diverse. Let me share with you a few examples:
Building the Home of Tomorrow
The future of our homes will be driven by connectivity – from our home appliances and smartphones to our TVs, cars, and more. With each new product we create, we aim to make it less impactful on the environment and more connected, while helping you to be more productive. We call this idea – Everyday Sustainability. It’s where the products that you use will not only make your life easier through our SmartThings connected home program but operate more efficiently as a system, contributing to a healthier, more livable planet.
In 2021 we introduced our SmartThings Energy App, giving you the ability to view real-time energy usage and providing tips on ways to further reduce energy across your home. This year, we’ve introduced the first mass-market Smart Home Energy Management System to earn ENERGY STAR certification. Certified systems offer a variety of energy-saving attributes, including standby limits, grid capabilities to enable demand response functionality, utility time of use pricing integration to run appliances or EV charging off peak, and the ability to suggest energy saving actions based on room or home occupancy. The value of an ENERGY STAR certified SHEMS is that it simplifies your efforts to save energy use and allows you to reap the full benefits of home efficiency, independent of your level of personal involvement.
