Samsung Makes a Difference with Multi-Million Rand Bursary
Students receive much needed funds to pursue their university ambitions
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, 6 March 2019 – At a ceremony, held last night in Johannesburg, Samsung awarded bursaries to students of the University of Pretoria, North West University, University of Johannesburg and the Gauteng Department of Education to the value of R7 million. Following Samsung’s ethos in aiding various campaigns to uplift communities and assist graduates in getting ready for the work environment, the recipients of the bursaries are afforded the opportunity to complete their studies. The students who are currently pursuing careers in Business, Marketing and IT, were the delighted recipients of Samsung’s continuing focus on the nation’s youth.
“We believe this investment will help alleviate the current skills shortage facing the country – most notably through the Government’s 2030 vision. Samsung is firmly committed to meaningful change that turns potential into power, which is why occasions such as these are truly inspiring,” says Hlubi Shivanda, Director: Business Innovation Group and Corporate Affairs at Samsung South Africa.
The ‘Empowering Tomorrow’ event was attended by President and CEO of Samsung Africa, Mr. Sung Yoon, representatives of the educational institutions as well as the student beneficiaries. The Samsung bursaries will not only fund these students’ education but Samsung also pledged to seek out paths to employment for the deserving students. The initiative is aligned with Samsung’s global mission ‘Enabling People’, which is aimed at helping people discover and develop their innate potential. Samsung will continue to pursue opportunities that give the youth of South Africa hope for the future with viable careers, allowing them to support themselves and make a positive impact on their families, their communities and where people are meaningfully engaged in the economy.
