Samsung Australia, with the support of Dr Preeya Alexander, is encouraging Australians to take control of their health and wellbeing in their homes, at school, and in their workplaces, by understanding the wellness benefits of air purifiers. Air purifiers that have been approved by the National Asthma Council Australia’s Sensitive Choice program may benefit Australians affected by allergies and asthma[1]; so greater awareness may be all that is standing between many Australians and an improved quality of life.

According to Samsung research, 93% of Australians believe that air purifiers are useful on some level[2], yet the majority have little to no knowledge of what benefits air purifiers provide. Monthly search engine queries highlight the knowledge gap with common searches including: “What do Air purifiers do?”, “Do air purifiers work?” and, “How do air purifiers work?”[3]

Supporting Australians’ appetite for answers on the benefits of air purifiers is the appeal of reducing harmful toxins from their homes. One in three Australians find help to fight against allergies by reducing pollen, dander, and superfine particles appealing while pet owners would like help keeping pet hair and pet smells out of the house[4]. According to General Practitioner, and Family wellness expert, Dr Preeya Alexander (@thewholesomedoctor), the COVID-19 pandemic has spurred many Australians to consider what they can take control of to live healthier, happier lives. Almost two thirds of Australians agree that COVID-19 has made them think more about the air they breathe, however only 1 in 5 can think of anything inside their home that is contributing to poor air quality[6]. Dr Preeya continues: “With 1 in 10 Aussie[7] kids affected by asthma, decreasing the level of potential triggers in the air, such as dust, paint fumes, and bushfire smoke at home and in schools should be a top priority. 1. Ensure the air purifier has a HEPA filtration system⁹ designed to inhibit the spread of bacteria and capture allergy-causing dust, pollen and mould particles and even soft pet hair.
2. Ask whether the air purifier includes an activated, carbon-based deodorisation filter to help manage odours and harmful gases[18].
3. Check the Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR). The higher the rate, the faster the air is purified. The target Clean Air delivery rate is four times per hour[19]. 
4. Take advantage of Wi-Fi Control and SmartThings[20] to have the ability to both remotely monitor the air quality and operate your purifier to conveniently suit your needs.
5. Look for third party accreditation and awards (CHOICE Recommendation, National Asthma Council Australia’s Sensitive Choice program, Canstar) for reassurance and credibility that you are buying a product that has been independently and rigorously tested for high quality performance and health benefits claims.

Samsung Electronics Australia has introduced two new air purifiers, the BESPOKE Cube AX53 and BESPOKE Cube AX70, which are available now in selected Harvey Norman stores and the Samsung online store.

BESPOKE Cube Air Purifiers have been designed with ease of use and home aesthetics in mind. Offering a HEPA filtration system that removes up to 99.97 percent of 0.3㎛ ultra-fine dust[1], is virtually silent and gives consumers the convenience to monitor and control air quality while at home or remotely with WiFi control and the SmartThings mobile app[2]. With sleek, neutral colours, consumers don’t need to compromise on style to ensure the whole family is breathing cleaner air.

BESPOKE Cube Air Purifiers offer unique design with a herringbone pattern and colour palette to integrate into almost seamlessly and stylishly in any home. The contemporary design on the front panel and the neutral champagne and white colours were chosen to effortlessly blend with any interior style. The BESPOKE Cube AX53 has a compact design to take up less space but still offer 53㎡ of coverage, while the BESPOKE Cube AX70 offers 70㎡ of coverage and features concealed wheels that make it easily portable between spaces in the home. Samsung Electronics Australia commends the Department of Education and Training Victoria on its decision to install its AX90T air purifiers in public schools as part of its safe return-to-school plan.   

Samsung will supply 51,000 AX90T7080WD (AX7500) Air Purifiers to the Victorian Government Department over the next four months. Given the critical timing, Samsung has chartered a flight from its manufacturing hub in Korea to deliver the air purifier units in a timely manner.

The efficacy of portable air purifiers has been independently verified by University of Melbourne research, since published in The Journal of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology[1]. Using Samsung’s AX60T5080WD (AX5500) Air Purifier, the research found portable air cleaning devices that have HEPA filtration helped increase the clearance of aerosols.

Samsung technology allows the remote operation of its air purifier en masse. The SmartThings and ‘B.IoT’ (Business IoT) software allow for remote management of these devices at scale in schools, hospitals, quarantine hotels, offices and other indoor environments. Managing these units at scale and remotely is far more efficient, effective and safer than manual and individual device management in locations where it is not always possible or safe to enter a space or room (e.g. COVID quarantine).

In addition to education environments, Samsung’s air purifiers are already being used in a variety of settings within the Australian public and private sectors to help reduce the risk of airborne transmission of COVID-19, including hotel quarantine programs in Victoria and Queensland, and major hospitals.

The study, conducted in May, explores the common trends in homes around the country and the behaviours and attitudes which continue to evolve the more time we spend at home. This year’s research uncovers a house-proud nation obsessed with cleaning.

“Our daily routines have changed over the last twelve months and our homes will be never be the same,” explains Jeremy Senior, Vice President, Consumer Electronics, Samsung Australia.

“For most, home is a safe haven. It’s where we stay connected, our classroom, our office and our cinema/ entertainment hub. Our latest research reveals Australians have become more obsessed than ever with cleaning and decluttering. We have updated our appliances to be more efficient and with our change in daily routines we have adopted ‘chore snacking’ – doing smaller more frequent cleans rather than saving-up lots of tasks for the weekend.

“As a house proud nation, seven in 10 have said that having a cleaner home provides a barrier of comfort and safety as we declutter and dial up cleaning their spaces, surfaces and air in the home.”

“As we adopt new routines, technology is here to support and give families back time for activities they love. Time together with the family around the TV proving the key escapism and reward from our chores, work and schooling.” concludes Mr. Senior.

Obsessed with cleaning

Over the last year, one quarter of Australians have changed their cleaning routine as they adapt to more time living and working at home. Almost one-third of Australians now consider themselves ‘obsessed’ with cleaning (29%), increasing to 44% for young families and 43% amongst millennials.

The research also found that 34% of Australians are doing a ‘deep clean’ at least weekly and over half (64%) are cleaning around the home daily.

Having a clean home also makes 3 in 4 Australians feel less stressed, while 7 in 10 say a clean home makes them feel safe. For those obsessed with cleaning, 72% think their home is one of the cleanest they know.

New routines

Stress has been reduced from tireless chores thanks to ‘chore-snacking’. 60% admit they are doing smaller, more frequent cleans of the home each day – helping Australians feel on top of the cleaning and giving them more time back at the weekend for activities they love.

To support their new ‘chore-snacking’ routine, 38% of Australians have purchased a new appliance to make cleaning easier.

Working from home has also allowed over half of Australians to catch up on chores and feel more in control; with 22% washing dishes, 18% vacuuming and 24% admitting to doing more laundry during work hours or lunchbreaks.

A return to the traditional

With ‘chore snacking’ alleviating time pressure at the weekend, a quarter of Australians are turning to the kitchen as a form of relaxation, while mealtimes have become increasingly important as a time to reconnect with loved ones (43%, higher for young families at 60%).

61% of Australians also admitted they would rather have a good home cooked meal than go out for dinner, and 2 in 5 said they are cooking more meals from scratch in the past 12 months – higher amongst young families (50%).

With more time, and a greater connection to home, many Australians are finding comfort and entertainment in generation-old traditions. 1 in 2 are partaking in activities such as knitting, cross stitching, embroidery, crochet, jam making, and baking with 56% of Australians doing at least one of these in the past 12 months.

Enjoying spending time together (and apart)

34% of Australians say they watch TV to share time together with others, and 69% prefer to watch movies with others – cementing our desire to connect with family and friends in the home. The research also revealed the average household has three TVs, and whilst the primary purpose of the living room TV is to spend time with others, 46% will retreat to the bedroom to watch TV away from others.

31% of Australians have TVs in the bedroom where they unwind and watch their ‘own’ shows without judgement or interruption – with reality TV (42%), news (42%) and documentaries (46%) proving the most popular to watch solo.

About the Australians@HOME research

The Australians@HOME research by Samsung seeks to uncover the role technology plays in helping make Australian lives easier, taking the pressure off household chores and helping to save time through effective use of appliances and food storage.

The 2020-21 Australians@HOME research is the third study conducted following similar research in 2015 and 2017, and seeks to support Samsung in its ongoing efforts to understand the lives of Australians. This research was in field in May 2021 (sample: n=1000 nationally representative on age, gender and state among people aged 18-75) and was conducted by third-party research agency Fiftyfive5.
