Samsung Electronics, today unveils plans to leverage its industry-leading air conditioning solutions at Mostra Convego Expocomfort 2018 (MCE) in Milan, Italy from March 13 to 16 to strengthen its position in the European HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) market.

The biennially-held MCE is the largest HVAC exhibition in the world, drawing over 2,000 exhibitors and 160,000 visitors from around the world to showcase the latest industry technologies. At the expo, Samsung plans on continuing to promote its revolutionary and unique Wind-Free technology in Europe and will exhibit the full lineup of Wind-Free air conditioner units for both residential and commercial use, including the 1-Way and 4-Way units.

The Wind-Free technology is one of the most outstanding innovations featured. After reaching the desired temperature with Fast Cooling mode, it then maintains the ideal temperature without any direct wind by gently dispersing cool and still air through micro air holes for a natural cooling effect through Wind-Free technology.

Samsung is also introducing both residential and commercial air conditioners that contain R32, an environmentally-friendly refrigerant alternative, to keep in line with the strengthened environmental regulations in Europe. When compared with the standard R410A refrigerant, R32 has only one-third of its global warming potential (GWP) and is characterized by its high-efficiency even in lower quantities.

Samsung is also displaying customized air conditioning solutions for specific environments at the exhibit by dividing the booth into specific zones: Residence, Office Building, Hotel, and Retail. Various B2B customers will have the chance to see the b.IoT server, Samsung’s unique integrated building management solution, as well as a SmartThings-based smart home that demonstrate Samsung’s vision of connected living.

Samsung also showcased a variety of air conditioning products such as the energy-efficient 360 Cassette, the circular air conditioner that provides even cooling with minimized direct wind. In addition, the small-capacity DVM S Eco HR, which can simultaneously operate cooling and heating in homes or small commercial spaces, will also be on display.

At the Samsung booth, visitors will be able to test the Wind-Free technology firsthand in the Wind-Free experience zone.

At its booth at the AHR 2018 Expo, Samsung will provide visitors with a special Wind-Free unit* experience demonstration, which highlights how the advanced cooling technology creates still air to cool a space, and utilizes thousands of micro holes to gently disperse cold air. The engaging experience will allow visitors to feel the difference between standard cooling technology and Wind-Free advanced cooling technology.

Samsung will also highlight its full line of Wind-Free units for residential and commercial applications, in particular 4Way Cassette. 4Way Cassette, which will be exhibited for the first time, has a blade up to 31% larger than conventional products and a widening swing angle of 10°, which can deliver wind up to 5m – around double that of conventional products. In addition, 4Way Cassette is equipped with a motion detection sensor (MDS) to detect the position of the person and automatically adjust the direction of the wind, but also is able to be utilized even in the absence of a person.

Samsung will also showcase expansions to current product lines such as the Max Heat series and DVM S Eco which support advanced heating performance and efficiency at -13°F. All Max Heat series were certified by the US Environmental Protection Agency as ‘Energy Star’ and boast excellent energy efficiency.

In addition to these innovations, Samsung’s booth will also feature Samsung’s series of new fresh air systems, Fresh Access, -40° low ambient cooling systems, dedicated outdoor air systems, energy recovery ventilation systems, along with notable products such as the 360 Cassette, DVM Chiller, and Hospitality Management Solutions (HMS).

The World’s First Wind-Free Technology

Samsung’s AR9500M sets itself apart by producing no direct air drafts, keeping the room temperature comfortable thanks to Wind-Free technology. This unique technology gently spreads cool air through 21,000 micro air holes and creates “still air” moving at speeds slower than 0.15m/s.*

Wind-Free cooling technology introduces a two-step cooling process, reducing temperature in Fast Cooling Mode before switching to Wind-Free Mode, which maintains the desired temperature while minimizing drafts. In Wind-Free Mode, energy consumption is reduced by up to 72 percent** compared to Fast Cooling Mode. Furthermore, using the Samsung Digital Inverter 8-Pole with POWERboost Technology, the AR9500M takes less time to reach its desired speed.

The AR9500M’s unique Triangle Architecture also contributes to its superior cooling performance. The upgraded structure’s wider inlet allows for more air to be drawn in at once, while the optimal width and angle of the outlet, extra v-blades and large fan – which is 22 percent larger than in previous models – ensure that air is cooled and expelled faster, farther and wider to reach every corner of the room.

The Wi-Fi enabled AR9500M allows temperature and product settings to be adjusted remotely via the Samsung Connect application. The application offers users real-time updates on performance and power consumption, and it can identify problems in need of repair.

Cooling Down the Latin Heat

The AR9500M was introduced to industry professionals at Febrava 2017, alongside the 360 Cassette, the world’s first circular-designed air conditioner, and the Wind-Free 1Way Cassette for residential as well as commercial use. Taking place until September 15 at São Paulo’s Expo Exhibition and Convention Center, the trade fair is the most important event in the HVAC-R chain in Latin America, showcasing over 550 HVAC-R companies and attracting more than 30,000 visitors each year.

Visitors to the Samsung booth can appreciate the comfort and quiet of Wind-Free technology for themselves at the company’s Wind-Free experience zone, which showcases its air conditioning technologies. Also on display are Samsung’s further cutting-edge HVAC-R solutions, including its corrosion resistance technology for long-lasting performance, with special protection optimized for the Latin American market.

Brazil is a significant first step for Samsung towards capturing the Latin American market. The country represents the continent’s core market, with an air conditioner market share of over 25 percent and a high demand for the comfort and efficiency offered by the premium air conditioner.

Brazil’s Latin American neighbors will not be left wanting. Samsung has mapped out a further expansion into the region’s substantial market, equivalent to $2.4 billion dollars, in the latter half of 2017. There will be consecutive launches in new Latin American markets, when countries such as Peru, Argentina and Chile will be able to welcome Wind-Free technology and comfort into their lives.

In addition, Samsung has been supplying the 360 Cassette to Harry’s, Singapore’s famous casual restaurant chain with multiple stores, as well as pubs located in the Tanjong Pagar area, where many young patrons frequent.

A New Type of Air Conditioner

The 360 Cassette is a new type of air conditioner, entirely different from conventional air-conditioners, with a circular design that harmonizes with air spaces, and horizontal airflow technology which prevents cold wind from blowing directly onto users, and instead spreads cool air evenly.

Whereas traditional air conditioners may yield uncomfortable drafts and uneven airflow, the 360 Cassette’s ‘rounded’ approach allows it to provide optimum efficiency and comfort.

Samsung’s full Max Heat Series line-up was developed in response to consumer demand in the US and Canada for air conditioning systems that protect users from significantly lower temperatures. The Max Heat Series provides high heating capacity with 100% efficiency down to -15℃ outside ambient temperatures. For extreme weather, the commercial DVM S Max Heat uses Flash Injection technology to power maximum heating capacity in temperatures as low as -25℃. At the AHR Expo, Samsung is also showcasing the world’s first wall-mounted Wind-Free^TM AC, the AR9500M. An update to Samsung’s best-selling floor standing model, the new AC, winner of the 2017 CES Innovation Award, gently disperses cool and still air through 21,000 micro air holes for a natural and pleasant cooling effect. After the user sets the desired temperature, the unit balances and maintains the home’s internal climate so users can experience deep and restful sleep without having to wake up to direct and uncomfortable airflows. The new ACs are also incredibly energy efficient, with Samsung studies indicating that Wind-Free ACs can cut energy use by up to 72 percent*, and also feature Smart Home technology in sync with today’s IoT era.

Also on display, Samsung’s 360 Cassette, the world’s first circular and bladeless air conditioner, eliminates cold drafts and provides even cooling and heating with 360-degree airflow. The superior modern design offers a low-profile ceiling structure and the aesthetic finishing touch of a premium interior environment to fit elegantly into North American homes.

Additionally, the DVM S ACs which feature the largest capacity of 18-ton and high efficiency are also on display. In addition to extreme heating performance with 100 percent heating output, the products have been customized for the US market with shortened 300mm ducts. Finally, the DVM S Water, which uses water to exchange heat alongside a highly efficient compressor, along with the enhanced Data Management Server (DMS) 2.5 and Lynk Hotel Management Solutions are also being exhibited.

As part of its US expansion strategy, Samsung acquired a top US air conditioner distributor, Quietside, in 2014. The partnership is expected to give Samsung another competitive edge as it continuously strives to develop innovative products and solutions through cutting-edge R&D.

A Circular Design for Enhancing Performance

Utilizing inventive designs is one way Samsung is working toward enhancing efficiency.

The 360 Cassette, for example, is an innovative, bladeless system that incorporates an industry-first circular design for an even airflow and stylish aesthetic. Unlike conventional indoor units that use blade rotations to control the direction of air, the 360 Cassette integrates a Booster Fan that uses pressure to generate a complete, horizontal airflow that works to eliminate cold drafts.

Samsung’s circular air wave consistently controls the temperature of the room by providing an even distribution of air across a full 360-degree range. Bladeless flow control allows for a 39 percent increase in coverage area by delivering 100 percent of air volume, compared to traditional four-way cassette units, which can lose up to 25 percent of air volume.

Small Size, Big Efficiency

Samsung’s System Air Conditioning units like the 360 Cassette rely on outdoor units to function. But conventional outdoor units are not without their limitations, as many of them take up large amounts of space.

Because of this, inverter-type air conditioners are becoming increasingly popular, as they occupy less space and can achieve greater efficiency at lower costs when compared to traditional AC systems. Furthermore, they are integrated with a variable speed compressor that switches off once the desired temperature is reached and switches on when the temperature changes, thus providing energy savings.

The DVM S is the first air conditioning system to achieve 30HP (84kW) per unit by including a new Super Inverter Scroll Compressor with flash injection technology that improves its performance by as much as 21 percent compared with conventional products.

Samsung developers spent four years researching ways to maximize the outdoor unit’s efficiency. To minimize its size, they reduced the number of compressors from three to two. Also, they improved the efficiency of air and heat exchange by separating the pins from the heat exchanger. The resulting product weighs 29 percent less and occupies 40 percent less space.

“For mid- to large-sized buildings, the best HVAC system is one that takes up the least amount of space,” said Iloh Bae, Samsung System Air Conditioning B2B Product Manager. “Conserving space not only decreases one’s early-stage investment but also extends the lifecycle of the building, helping to secure profitability.”

The DVM Chiller, meanwhile, combines an air-cooled chiller with Inverter Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) in a compact unit. Because it does not require a separate cooling tower, it is capable of dramatically decreasing the required size of the installation area by 21 percent. Furthermore, basic models can be combined in different ways to extend capacity up to 320 tons.

“There are many challenges in installing System Air Conditioning in old structures,” noted Wansoo Yang, Senior Engineer of the System Air Conditioning R&D Lab. “Simply changing the outdoor unit can significantly improve efficiency. The DVM Chiller is very useful in this case, particularly for buildings that store heat.”

Similarly, the DVM S ECO is a maximum capacity side discharge VRF air conditioner engineered to deliver a single outdoor unit solution for apartment and office buildings. The innovative design of the product features a robust Inverter Scroll Compressor and corrugate fin, which improve heating performance by 20 percent and increases airflow by 10 percent compared to standard side discharge VRF units.

From utilizing inverters to incorporating specialized designs, Samsung’s innovations in HVAC engineering are set to transform the air conditioning marketplace by boosting energy efficiency, maximizing space and ensuring sustainable development.

Broadly speaking, commercial buildings make use of two types of AC systems, namely: central air-conditioning systems, which control overall indoor temperatures, and Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems, which provide temperature control for individual rooms and spaces. The former provides a type of ready-made air conditioning, while the latter offers a more adaptive, tailor-made system.

With the addition of in AC products designed for family use, central air-conditioning and VRF systems comprise the top three global AC markets.

Recently, traditional VRF systems have received a further boost in the form of an improved network, enhanced functions and a range of sensors that all create more customizable Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, while at the same time decreasing overall energy consumption.

Samsung Electronics intends to provide the air-conditioning industry with a further boost by delivering innovative products that meet the demands of global consumers, especially in the commercial sector.

“As we enter the era of the Internet of Things (IoT), the industry will begin upon a new phase of practicality whereby construction, communication and other services will merge to offer customers the best ground-up experiences,” said Charles Park, Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Digital Appliances Business.

Samsung’s new 360 Cassette units operating at a duty free shop in Korea

Since October last year, Samsung has hosted a series of global roadshows, taking in 117 cities to showcase its air conditioning product range, inviting more than 9,000 B2B customers from 50 countries. Samsung met approximately 4,500 partners, winning a favorable response for its new high-end products, including the 360 Cassette unit.

“The 360 Cassette model guides air to form a complete and comprehensive, 360-degree horizontal dispersion, and preventing direct airflow onto individuals in the room. It also ensures fast, even cooling throughout interior settings,” said Park. “It has a very stylish design, so we are receiving a lot of orders from large franchisors like chains of cafés and luxury retailers.”

Conventional 4-way cassette systems, often used in coffee shops and hospitals, usually require wind deflectors to minimize cold air drafts. The 360 Cassette, on the other hand, eliminates the drawbacks of its predecessors, making a meaningful difference for indoor environments.

Although Samsung is something of a late bloomer in the AC market—one that boasts a century-long history—the company is rapidly emerging as an industry leader by applying unmatched technological innovations to its products.

At Milan’s Mostra Convegno Expocomfort 2016 (MCE), the largest HVAC exhibition in Europe, Samsung showcased its innovative AC solutions at work in real-life applications over 800 square meters of floor space—the biggest display at the expo—from March 15-18.

The innovative design of the 360 Cassette unit transforms air flow. The unique and revolutionary booster fan inside the 360 Cassette guides air to form a complete horizontal flow, generating layers of chilled air. Samsung’s circular air wave consistently controls the temperature of the room by providing an even distribution of air in a full 360 direction. Bladeless flow control ensures fast and comfortable cooling without the cold draft by ensuring 100 percent of air volume compared to traditional four-way Cassette units, which can lose up to 25 percent of air volume. The resulting cooling speed is increased by 34 percent.

The 360 Cassette combines revolutionary performance with an elegant design that will blend in and enhance any setting. The unit features a stylish panel and intuitive display that allows users to change the air flow depending on preference. Users can choose from three settings including horizontal, vertical, and separate zone control air flow.

The air conditioner can be fitted within the ceiling or exposed, offering ultimate flexibility to suit the style of any room. Samsung boosts efficiencies and performance capabilities of air conditioners with the new DVM – the Digital Variable Multi air conditioner. The DVM S 30HP combines the DVM S with cutting-edge innovation for enhanced performance, efficiency and reliability.

The new Samsung DVM S 30HP features a number of revolutionary factors to boost performance, including a new Super Inverter Scroll Compressor with flash injection technology and an optimized bypass valve location, which increases heating capacity by 29 percent compared to conventional VRF unit.

The further addition of a hybrid heat exchanger increases the heat exchange area while an optimized refrigerant control delivers greater efficiency (10 percent) and a new oval-shaped diffuser application improves the airflow path and increases the airflow rate by 17 percent.

The Samsung DVM S 30HP also has an innovative leak detection system. When a leak is detected, the system automatically begins an active pump down process to collect the refrigerant and close all valves to isolate it within the unit.

The DVM S Eco 14HP: Samsung’s new side discharge VRF unit

The DVM S Eco 14HP is a new side discharge VRF air conditioner engineered to deliver a single outdoor unit solution for apartment and office buildings.

The improved performance of the Samsung DVM S Eco 14HP ensures it meets the growing need for a specialized single outdoor unit to reduce the cost of previous multiple loading and sub-duct installation in multi-room buildings.

The innovative design of the DVM S Eco 14HP features a robust Inverter Scroll Compressor and corrugate fin, which improves heating performance by 20 percent and increases air flow by 10 percent compared to standard side discharge VRF units.

The increased horse power of the DVM S Eco (maximum 14HP) enables a single outdoor unit to manage the air conditioning of an apartment or an office building, in place of multiple costly units. All areas of the building can be covered as the new unit also provides an extended piping length of up to 160 meters and an installation height of up to 50 meters. The width of the new DVM S Eco 14HP is less than one meter (940mm), maximizing capacity with a better use of space, while the four-way piping enables convenient installation.

Samsung’s cutting-edge energy efficient DVM Chiller

The new DVM Chiller is a powerful system that combines an air-cooled chiller with Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) in a compact unit.

Responding to the growing demand for water-source HVAC following the tightening of EU regulations on F-gas levels, Samsung has engineered an air-cooled chiller that offers greater energy efficiency and ease of use in an innovative compact design.

By reducing the system refrigerant levels significantly more than a conventional chiller, the Samsung DVM Chiller not only complies with current refrigerant quota levels but also adheres to the further upcoming reduction in levels (35 percent in 2018).

In the revolutionary DVM Chiller, Samsung has embedded the world-class BLDC Inverter Scroll Compressor with Flash Injection technology, ensuring more than 75 percent of heating capacity at -20°C ambient temperature and greater energy efficiency. The Chiller enables users to reduce annual utility costs by 36 percent to 50 percent compared to conventional chillers.

The Samsung DVM Chiller also delivers powerful heating performance while providing cold water through thermal ice storage with an in-built pressure and temperature sensor, which prevents device breakdown from freeze-bursts.

Samsung Air Conditioner 8-pole Motor

The new Samsung Air Conditioner series is engineered to consume less power and produce exceptional cooling comfort. Equipped with an advanced technology in the form of 8-pole motor – the world’s first – in its Digital Inverter Compressor, the Samsung Air Conditioner series ensures faster cooling performance of up to 43% while using up to 68%* less energy as compared to conventional air conditioners.

Together, these innovations in HVAC engineering are set to transform the air conditioning marketplace by boosting energy efficiency and performance, maximizing space and increasing cooling speed. Samsung, which is seeking to expand its footprint in North America, will showcase many of its innovative smart home products at its specially designed, 2,500 sq. ft AHR Expo booth (#4659). The company will also highlight the power of Internet of Things (IoT) technology to modernize building systems and system management, and achieve greater energy conservation.

360 Circular Cassette Design

Samsung’s New 360 Circular Cassette Design

The innovative design of the 360 Cassette unit transforms air flow. The unique booster fan inside the 360 Cassette guides air to form a complete horizontal flow, generating multiple layers of chilled air. Samsung’s circular air wave consistently controls the temperature of the room by providing an even distribution of air across a full 360 degree range. Bladeless flow control ensures fast comfortable cooling without the cold draft, by delivering 100 percent of air volume compared to traditional four-way Cassette units, which can lose up to 25 percent of air volume. As a result, cooling speed is increased by 34 percent.

The 360 Cassette combines remarkable performance with an elegant design which can blend in and enhance any setting. The unit features a stylish and intuitive panel display that allows users to change the air flow according to their preference. Users can choose from three settings including horizontal, vertical and separate zone control air flow.

DVMS 18-ton

The DVMS 18-ton features a compact design with a large capacity, to maximize the efficient use of space in the installation site, lowering the required space and weight by 40 and 31 percent, respectively. When individual modules are combined, the capacity can be expanded to 44 tons. To increase energy efficiency, the new DVSM also leverages Samsung’s Super Inverter Scroll Compressor, which has been optimized, as well as a hybrid heat exchanger.

DVMS Max-Heat

The DVMS Max-Heat solution utilizes Flash Injection technology to ensure 100 percent heating capacity at -13°F. It is specifically designed for optimum performance in the cold winters of the northern United States and Canada.

DVM Chiller

The new DVM Chiller is a powerful system that combines an air-cooled chiller with Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) in a compact unit. Because it does not require a separate cooling tower, it is capable of dramatically decreasing the size of the installation area by 21 percent. It also boasts a best-in-class efficiency rating of IPLV 20.5, which represents a 54 percent improvement over conventional chillers.

Smart Vertical Solutions

Samsung is also showcasing a series of smart solutions at the exhibition, each of which is designed to boost energy conservation and enhance integrated building management. For hotels, the range of solutions includes smart TV controls that enable guests to control their heating and cooling more effectively. As well as smarter lighting and key tags that can entirely help generate up to 30 percent in energy savings, using a presence and absence detection and response algorithm.

Managers of small and medium sized buildings will be especially interested in Samsung’s solution that leverages the latest IoT technology to control building machinery, power and lighting. This light commercial solution utilizes an innovative VRF algorithm that helps save energy. It is also based in the cloud computing to enable remote control and maintenance.

Finally, Samsung’s smart solution for large buildings provides integrated VRF management, and centralized control of HVAC, network, security, parking, elevator operation and renewable energy, inside the building.

A New Approach to Air

When Samsung engineers decided to revolutionize existing cooling and heating technology, they looked to other industries for possible solutions. In the end, wind turbines—which enhance airflow efficiency by bringing in a sub-airflow through their blades from the outside into the main airflow—proved to be exactly what they were looking for. To adapt this principle to the 360 Cassette, Samsung added a Booster Fan, a mechanism that uses pressure to alter the direction of the airflow.

With the Booster Fan in place, engineers next had to evaluate how to fix some of the more common pain points of conventional 4-way cassette systems, including a way to eliminate direct airflow. So, to ensure a more even airflow, Samsung opted to remove traditional blades altogether from the device. When integrated with an all-new circular shape, a complete contrast to the traditional mounted square, the result was a triumphant one.

The final product—a bladeless, circular mounted cassette equipped with a Booster Fan—ensured three factors that would contribute to a device that would surely set a new standard in heating and cooling. First, there would be no cold drafts, but rather a cool and comfortable airflow resembling that of natural wind. Next, airflow would ensure even, fast cooling and heating. Finally, the natural curves of the design would make it stylishly appropriate for just about any interior.

In the past, some conventional indoor air conditioning systems posed problems to interior design, a component that has a big effect on the way we interact with and perceive our surroundings. As a bladeless, circular system, the 360 Cassette blends in naturally with its surroundings while providing a stunning finishing touch.
