Samsung Electronics today announced the global launch of its new robot vacuum cleaner, Jet Bot AI+.* First unveiled at CES 2021, the new robot vacuum demonstrates Samsung’s leadership in offering consumers innovative and intelligent solutions to optimize home cleaning routines. It will launch in the U.S. and Europe in June, and will also be available in the Latin American, Southeast Asian and CIS regions during the second half of 2021.

“Jet Bot AI+* reflects Samsung’s ongoing dedication to creating connected appliances that deliver dynamic performance that can adapt to the varying needs of our consumers,” said Hyesoon Yang, Vice President and Head of the Customer Experience Team of the Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “We’re truly excited to introduce a robot vacuum that comes with industry-leading object detection and recognition technologies. Consumers can now clean their homes more intelligently and efficiently using the AI-powered Jet Bot that makes cleaning more personalized and convenient.”

World-Class Object Recognition and AI Driving

Jet Bot AI+* is the world’s first robot vacuum that comes with an active stereo-type 3D sensor, which accurately scans a wide area1 to avoid small, hard-to-detect objects on the floor. Its 3D depth camera—equivalent to 256,000 distance sensors—can precisely detect obstacles as small2 as 1cm. This game-changing object detection can prevent the unit from getting stuck on small obstacles in its cleaning path.

Jet Bot AI+* is also the world’s first robot vacuum to be equipped with an Intel AI solution, which powers its Jet AI Object Recognition technology. The smart solution allows the robot to navigate with more accuracy by recognizing not only the objects on the floor, but also appliances and furniture.3 The robot’s smart decision-making ensures users can have their unit clean closely around items such as children’s toys while maintaining a safe distance from delicate objects like porcelain vases.4 It can also classify items such as pet excrements, glass cups and electrical cables as dangerous or likely to cause secondary contamination in order to avoid them.

Jet Bot AI+* is even equipped with a LiDAR Sensor that calculates its location precisely to optimize its cleaning path by repeatedly scanning the room5 to gather distance information. This technology works well in dark areas such as low-lit rooms or underneath furniture so the unit can cover a larger area6 with minimal blind spots.

Powerful Clean From Start to Finish

Users can clean their homes much more thoroughly with advanced technologies that enable powerful cleaning. Jet Bot AI+’s* Digital Inverter Motor maximizes the suction power for a deeper clean. And with its Intelligent Power Control function, the new robot vacuum can even identify the type of surface it needs to clean as well as the amount of dust that is on it. Using this information, the unit can automatically adjust its suction power for a more optimized cleaning session.

Jet Bot AI+* also comes with a host of hygiene-related functionalities that enable effortless floor cleaning while ensuring that dust is securely trapped and less likely to be released back into the air. Its Advanced 5 Layered Filtration system traps 99.99%7 of micro dust, including 0.5~4.2µm sized particles that easily escape. All parts and filters are washable, so they can be kept hygienic.

Jet Bot AI+* pairs with the Clean Station, which collects dirt and hair in a 2.5L dust bag and only needs to be replaced once in every one to three months.8 After cleaning, the robot vacuum automatically returns to the Clean Station, emptying itself9 using Air Pulse technology complemented by a multi-layered filtration system that traps 99.999% of fine dust,10 ensuring virtually no dust is released back into the air.

Convenient Cleaning for Hassle-Free Usability

Users can control and monitor the Jet Bot AI+* remotely using the SmartThings app11 on their smartphones. The robot vacuum can be scheduled to clean selectively in either a single room or multiple rooms with the Select & Go function. The app can also be used to custom-define virtual No-Go Zones to prevent the unit from entering certain areas without the need for physical barriers.

The smart robot also offers Bixby voice recognition capabilities,12 meaning users can use voice commands to schedule cleaning sessions, change modes or even ask for the latest information such as news or weather updates.

And with Live Cleaning Report, users can easily track the movement of their Jet Bot AI+* on a virtual map of their homes in real time. Users can see where it has cleaned, and even pause it or instruct it to stop cleaning. Once it has completed cleaning, users can check its cleaning history to see which areas have been cleaned, how long it took, and which path it followed.

Moreover, users can monitor their home remotely with the Jet Bot AI+’s* Patrol Mode, which uses the unit’s front camera to livestream video images through the SmartThings app. The Patrol Mode allows users to monitor the status of rooms they want to check while away, and even lets them enjoy this feature through scheduling. The smart unit also supports end-to-end encryption, so video clips are secure and can only be viewed by an authorized user.

Intuitive Pet Care for the Modern Pet Parent

Pet owners can take advantage of these features further with the SmartThings Pet service. Set to launch in August, SmartThings Pet allows users to check in and care for their pets even while they are away. For example, SmartThings Pet syncs with products from PETKIT, a tech company dedicated to bringing smart pet products to the market—namely its Element feeder series and the COZY smart pet house.13 By integrating pet care into its smart home ecosystem, Samsung is reimagining how consumers live and interact with their pet companions.

* The new product names go into effect on July 5, 2021. This is a change to the product name only. Jet Bot AI+ will become Bespoke Jet Bot AI+.

1 Up to 1m, Horizontal field of view: 60°, Vertical field of view: 40°.

2 As small as about 1cm wide, 1cm tall and 1cm deep.

Samsung’s CES 2021 lineup showcases exciting ways that its new devices make users’ lives better. The company designed its latest home appliances with a focus on ‘Bespoke’ personalization – creating appliances that are customized for each user the way a bespoke suit is precisely tailored for each wearer. Optimized to fit a variety of lifestyles, Samsung’s newest innovations set a new standard for home appliances.

Providing a central hub that brings food, entertainment and smart functionality all together in a single package, Samsung’s Family Hub for 2021 is unifying and elevating experiences in the home like never before. A winner of the CES 2021 Innovation Awards six years running, the Family Hub continues to evolve with new features that add convenience, connectivity and delight to the kitchen.

One new notable service that can be used with the new incarnation of Family Hub is SmartThings Cooking, which makes food preparation a seamless culinary journey. With you from the initial moment of inspiration to meal planning, grocery shopping and eventually guided cooking, SmartThings Cooking is making keeping your family well-fed easier than ever before. SmartThings Cooking also synchronizes with the Cooking Board screen on the Family Hub, making it easy to switch between devices as needed.

To see how Family Hub for 2021 and SmartThings Cooking can enhance home experiences, Samsung Newsroom followed a day in the life of a family living in a home equipped with a Samsung smart kitchen.

[Monday, 5 PM] Customized Culinary Journeys

Looking to plan out the family’s meals for the week, Dad turns to his Family Hub’s one-stop Cooking Board. SmartThings Cooking’s Meal Planner automatically suggests a full week’s worth of delicious meals based on the family’s preferences and the ingredients they have in their fridge. With a few quick taps, Dad is able to create a grocery shopping basket straight from the recipes and conveniently complete payment through his usual online retailer.1

The family’s meals planned out for the week, Dad turns his attention to their meal for that evening. Considering what they have already eaten that week and the ingredients they have in the house, Family Hub recommends a sumptuous chicken pasta bake. Once he has completed his meal prep, he selects “Cook Mode” on his Family Hub screen to receive step-by-step instructions. When it is time to turn on his oven, the appropriate temperature and timing settings are transmitted to his Samsung smart oven with a tap of the “Send to Oven” button.

About to head home for the day, Mom opens the SmartThings app on her smartphone and sees that the family’s meals for the week are all ready to go. She is excited to see that she has a delicious pasta bake to look forward to when she gets home!

[Tuesday, 3:30 PM] Enriching Precious Family Moments

Jenny, the youngest child, goes to the Family Hub to show off the first photos she took all by herself on its screen, proudly displaying them for her family to see and decorating her display with images and stickers. By accessing the Family Hub device plug-in within the mobile SmartThings app, users can quickly and easily add photos to their large 21.5-inch Family Hub screen for all their loved ones to enjoy.

Mom arrives in the kitchen, ready to prepare dinner. She sees Jenny’s photos, smiles, and swipes to the Cooking Board to see what’s for dinner. Checking the recipe on the screen, she begins preparing the ingredients and sets the oven to the allocated pre-heat temperature by pressing “Send to Oven.”

[Tuesday, 6 PM] Making the Kitchen Fun

Time to start cooking! Using the Family Hub’s internet browser, Mom pulls up an online cooking tutorial to remind herself how to prepare the meal. That done, she uses one-touch Mirroring from her smartphone to play a video for the family’s youngest child and keep them entertained while herself and her eldest child prepare the meal.

When Dad arrives home, he comes in to find his family all happily cooking together and nodding along to some great cooking tunes.

With the dishes all done, it’s time for the family to retire for the night. Dad goes to the Family Hub to check that all of the family’s appliances are set to their appropriate modes for the night. The Family Hub also lets him know that the temperature is set to drop significantly that night, allowing him to set the thermostat to the right temperature to keep his family comfortable. Before heading to bed, Dad uses the SmartThings Video Widget to check that the house’s internal and front door cameras are working well, ensuring that his family will rest safe and secure.

Our lives are permeated by sound – from our alarms going off in the morning, to the noises made by our home appliances. From vigorous sounds to fun ones, the power of sound fills every corner of our lives with a range of different tones and moods. At CES 2021, Samsung Electronics embarked on a fresh communicative journey with its new brand sound, ‘The Voyage’.

A few notable sounds come to mind when we think of Samsung – namely, the Galaxy smartphone ringtone ‘Over the Horizon’ and the tone issued by the company’s home appliances, titled ‘Beyond the Horizon’. However, this is the first time that the company has sought to communicate directly with its consumers through its brand sound.

‘The Voyage’ represents the overall brand identity of Samsung Electronics and was created by sound designers with extensive experience in developing sounds for product functions. In line with the company’s existing sounds, the new melody presents a simplified musical scale so that the brand sound can be used in a broad range of applications.

The basic melody of the new brand sound consists of four simple notes. ‘Do’, the tonic note, symbolizes the reliability and stability of Samsung products. The inflection notes in the middle represent the willingness to meet challenges and continue moving forward. ‘Re’ is the last tension note, and expresses the company’s hope and excitement for the future. These four notes together create a sound that encapsulates the spirit of the ‘Relentless Pioneer’ – the brand persona of Samsung Electronics, which never stops challenging itself and innovating to improve the consumer experience.

Basic Melody

Piano Version of the Melody

https://img.global.news.samsung.com/global/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/The-Voyage_-Piano-Version-of-the-Melody.mp3

Samsung Electronics plans to develop various arrangements of this melody for a range of marketing activities. The melody will maintain a single motif, but will be arranged following Samsung’s brand tonality of bold, genuine, contemporary, and playful to deliver a range of atmospheric effects. The company also plans to establish positive communications with its users by integrating versions of the melody into not only products but stores, events and digital content, enabling consumers to experience the products and services in new ways.

Bold_Innovative: An electronic piece. This sound highlights a youthful, progressive and future-oriented feeling.

An official from Samsung’s Global Marketing Center said, “The sense of hearing can establish image awareness much more quickly than sight or touch, which are used extensively in a range of fields including the luxury goods sector.” The official added, “Samsung Electronics is also planning to use its new brand sound in emotionally-oriented brand talks to strengthen its corporate image as young and playful.”

Families today are doing more laundry than ever before, and Samsung is introducing new innovations to make this age-old chore easier and more intuitive. With Samsung’s WF8800A Front Load Washer and DV8800A Front Load Clothes Dryer (the smart laundry pair), doing your laundry becomes a breeze, giving you more time to commit to the activities and people you care about most.

Samsung Newsroom sat down with Hyunju Lee and Taihyuk Jang of Samsung Digital Appliances’ Living Product Planning Group to find out just how Samsung’s new laundry appliances, including CES 2021 Innovation Award Honoree WF8800A washer, is overhauling the experience of doing laundry and changing users’ lives for the better.

Taihyuk Jang and Hyunju Lee of Digital Appliances’ Living Product Planning Group

A More Intelligent Way to Wash

Q. In what ways is Samsung’s smart laundry pair changing the experience of doing laundry?

When we were developing the smart washer and dryer, the focus was on how we could make them smarter in a way that would be truly beneficial to the user. The new smart washer’s OptiWash cycle, for instance, determines how much water, detergent and softener you need for each load and dispenses it automatically. The machine senses the load’s weight, as well as how dirty the laundry is with special turbidity sensors, and decides on the most efficient way to wash it.

Meanwhile, Samsung’s smart dryer utilizes heat and humidity sensors to optimize its drying cycles, letting you spend less time toggling through settings. You can just toss in the laundry and let the machine figure out the rest. The washer and dryer are also connected to each other, allowing the best drying cycle for your load to be automatically determined based on the specifics of your washer load.

The intelligent laundry pair also offers a broad selection of cycles, with 25 wash cycles and 19 drying cycles that users can modify, delete and save using the My Cycle feature. Add to that the Smart Dial feature, which learns which settings you prefer for your washing and drying, and moves those settings to the top of your cycle list.

Let’s say you wash your workout clothes every Monday using the “Activewear” cycle. After an initial period of routine use, your Samsung laundry pair will learn this habit and automatically display the “Activewear” cycle on Mondays. The more you use your Samsung laundry pair, the more it will be able to help you minimize the work that goes into doing your laundry.

Innovative Function and Control

Q. What features make Samsung’s smart washer and dryer easier to use?

The WF8800A laundry pair includes a function called Multi-Control, which allows you to control your smart washer and dryer from a single control panel. Your dryer’s settings are also automatically matched with those from your wash cycle as long as your washer and dryer are connected via cable or through the Auto Cycle Link feature in the SmartThings app. The SmartThings app also allows users to manage their cycles and laundry settings remotely. With the new smart laundry pair, we additionally paid special attention to accessibility. For those who require it, the new smart washer and dryer feature dials with audio assistance technology that provides easy-to-understand feedback sounds that correspond to different options within cycles.

Q. What distinguishes the appearance of Samsung’s smart laundry pair?

Both Samsung’s smart washer and dryer come in a sleek black design that is accented by silver controls, making the appliances a complement to any home environment. The products also feature elegant control panels that make the washer and dryer easier to use by displaying words instead of symbols, removing the need for the user to consult a manual if an error ever occurs.

Q. How is Samsung’s new laundry pair caring for the environment?

Both the smart washer and smart dryer are made almost entirely out of recyclable parts, meaning that they can be taken apart and disposed of when needed without having to worry about adverse environmental impact. Using the intelligent OptiWash function, which optimizes wash settings for each load, users can rest easy knowing they’re using just the right amount of water and detergent. The pair are also both compatible with the HomeCare Wizard, which, in addition to providing information on schedules and delivering error reports, allows users to monitor their energy usage over time.

Samsung’s new laundry pair delivers intelligent capabilities to learn about users’ habits and preferences and harnesses cutting-edge technology to bring real change to a traditional household chore. Making the washer and dryer a collaborative pair and delivering a sleek, modern design to set off the aesthetics of your home, Samsung’s smart laundry pair is the future of laundry care.

For as long as people have had dwellings, they have had to commit time and energy to maintaining those dwellings. But now, Samsung is looking to make the age-old task of maintaining our homes far quicker and easier.

Created to give your house an amazing clean with minimal effort on your part, the JetBot 90 AI+ is the industry’s first smart robotic vacuum powered by Intel® AI. It uses cutting-edge object-recognition technology to navigate your home just like you do: avoiding furniture, dog droppings and cables without missing any spaces out. Check out the video and read on below to learn more about how, with innovations like a self-cleaning Clean Station and a camera you can monitor from anywhere, the JetBot 90 AI+ allows you to give your house a fast, efficient clean while barely lifting a finger.

Intelligent Navigation

The first-ever smart vacuum to be powered by Intel® AI, the JetBot 90 AI+ uses 3D sensors and enhanced object recognition to navigate your home as well as a person would. Utilizing a high-precision LiDAR sensor similar to those used in self-driving cars to detect distance and track location, the vacuum is capable of moving with a high degree of precision. Able to sense distances of up to six meters, rotate 360 degrees and access hard-to-reach spaces, no dirt is safe when the JetBot 90 AI+ is on the case.

When it comes to evading objects, the JetBot 90 AI+ features a powerful 3D sensor that allows it to scan an object and expertly maneuver around it without missing any cleanable spaces. Utilizing cutting-edge sensors, high resolution and object recognition technology, the JetBot 90 AI+ is capable of not only seeing, but classifying objects in its line of vision to differentiate which items to avoid, and which to clean close to.

The Intel® AI utilized in JetBot 90 AI+ allows for object recognition capabilities based on learning from over 1 million images of household items like home appliances and furniture. JetBot 90 AI+ is able to recognize objects such as sofas, bookshelves, tables, dog bowls, towels, and electrical cables.

Thoroughly Clean

Once it has finished cleaning, the JetBot 90 AI+ returns to its Clean Station, an elegantly designed dock for your robot vacuum that optimizes health and convenience by automatically emptying the vacuum’s dustbin for you. Dirt, dust and hair is emptied into a dust bag inside the machine through a filtration system that traps 99.999%1 of pollutants the vacuum captures and prevents them from being released back into your home during emptying.

The Clean Station’s dustbin only requires a bag change once every two to three months, and, like the robot vacuum itself, it features a blue LED notification light that alerts you when the bag is full. And the JetBot 90 AI+’s innovative dustbin is also made entirely of washable parts, making keeping it clean quick and convenient.

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) event might look a bit different this year, but one thing is for sure – even remotely, Samsung Electronics remains committed to empowering each and every one of their users make the best of the ‘new normal’ lifestyle that has come about due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On January 11, Samsung built anticipation for their in-depth presentations at CES 2021 with a live-streamed press conference announcing the company’s new vision and some of their new innovations that are set to provide a ‘Better Normal for All’. The press conference opened with some powerful remarks from Sebastian Seung, President and Head of Samsung Research, who outlined how the company’s latest technologies have been informed by the changes brought about in recent times and developed to empower users to live more conveniently, intelligently and sustainably.

Read on to discover more about the biggest announcements from Samsung’s CES 2021 opening press conference.

Designing Products for a Better Normal for All

Seung kicked off the live-streamed press conference by noting the changes all have us have experienced since last year’s CES and the impact this has had not only on the way we live, but also on how we use technology in our daily lives.

“Among many things, your home has taken on a greater significance,” noted Seung, who went on to acknowledge the different and new methods people have been harnessing to stay connected while staying at home. “But what if that home, and those technologies in it, were actually built around you? At Samsung, we’re always finding ways to do just that,” he assured.

Personalizing Your Smart Experiences

In order to illustrate Samsung’s commitment to technology that creates a better normal for all, Seung introduced several of the company’s latest innovations designed to provide more intuitive experiences that not only match a user’s environment, but also their personality.

One such innovation is the Samsung Bespoke 4-Door Flex refrigerator, the latest addition to Samsung’s customizable Bespoke refrigerator lineup and the first Bespoke product to launch in the U.S. market. “Samsung Bespoke 4-Door Flex comes with even more ways to customize your kitchen for both form and function,” highlighted Seung of the refrigerator’s innovative design that allows users to tailor the product to their own preferences.

The second innovation introduced by Seung was designed with the understanding that, following the way the concept of the living space has changed over the past year, users’ needs have also changed as they require personalized product experiences everywhere in their homes. “We think your TV should reflect these changes,” he noted, going on to highlight the Samsung Lifestyle TV lineup as an example of the company’s efforts to provide innovations that reflect the changing tastes and needs of consumers. Seung then went on to unveil the brand-new 110-inch MICRO LED, a breakthrough product packed with new features to let users customize their space and their experiences as they wish.

Seung then highlighted that, along with cutting-edge technologies, today’s users require personalized smart services that can respond and adapt to their daily routines, and went on to unveil two new services developed to help users stay more connected across different aspects of life: SmartThings Cooking and the Samsung Health Smart Trainer, a feature that tracks and analyzes user posture in real time just as personal trainer would.

Bringing Next-Generation AI Directly into Your Home

Seung next spotlighted the role artificial intelligence (AI) is capable of playing in the home. “Today, AI is about being more personal and predictive. It’s about benefitting you every day by being a core part of the products and services you enjoy,” he highlighted.

AI is already at work in several of Samsung’s leading consumer electronics, from smart washers to Smart TVs, where Neo Quantum Processor with enhanced upscaling capabilities can optimize picture quality to 4K and 8K picture output regardless of the input quality. However, explained Seung, the transformational power of AI is set to further come to life in users’ homes.

He then introduced a special guest to the stage – the brand-new JetBot 90 AI+, a robot vacuum fitted with smart object recognition technology for intelligent cleaning. Seung went on to showcase that the JetBot 90 AI+ is fitted with LiDAR and 3D sensors for location mapping.

What Samsung’s Robot Assistants Can Do for You

Seung then reminded viewers that Samsung has introduced a range of intelligent, human-centered robots at previous year’s CES events, and that with innovations such as the JetBot 90 AI+, this year is no exception. “Samsung has been continuously improving our robotics, including many types of Samsung Bot,” he explained.

“You are at the center of all our innovations,” further affirmed Seung, who then went on to provide a glimpse into what this might mean for robotic solutions in the future by introducing Samsung Bot Care,1 a concept robot that recognizes a user’s behavior to be a better robotic assistant, and Samsung Bot Handy,2 another concept robot capable of serving as an extra hand in the home that flips the script on what a ‘home robot’ could look like.

For All Our Tomorrows

Sandeep Rana, Environmental Sustainability Specialist at Samsung Electronics, then took to the stage in order to affirm Samsung’s ongoing commitment towards building a sustainable and accessible future. “We need a holistic solution – and that’s our goal at Samsung,” noted Rana. Highlighting the potential that the next generation has to generate meaningful change in the world, Rana outlined the global support programs that Samsung has established over the past decade to nurture young people’s new ways of thinking, and the services that have been developed to provide everyone with access to technology.

Next, Rana provided a run-down of the ways in which Samsung is developing products and technologies so that the next generation can enjoy a green planet. “To start, we’ve put sustainability at the heart of some of our most popular products.” From the interchangeable modular design of their Bespoke refrigerators and the energy efficiency of their AI-powered washing machines to the company’s memory-saving solutions, Samsung is constantly exploring how technology can break down barriers for a better future, noted Rana.

Furthermore, initiatives such as Samsung’s Galaxy Upcycling Program are a “recognition of our need to take responsibility and be in harmony with nature,” affirmed Rana, who then highlighted the company’s eco-packaging innovations that won the Innovation Award at last year’s CES and announced that Samsung plans to use eco-packaging in all 2021 Lifestyle TVs and most of the 2021 Neo QLED line.

Rana concluded her presentation by introducing Galaxy Upcycling at Home, a new program that lets users decide how they want to repurpose their own Galaxy devices into convenient home devices. “This is a vision of a better, more inclusive and sustainable future,” noted Rana, “and we’re working toward it every day.”

Looking Ahead to a Bright Future

Following Rana’s presentation, Seung then returned to the stage to provide final thoughts before closing out the press conference. “What we’ve shared today is how, after a year of abrupt change, Samsung can help us all work toward a better, brighter future through next-generation technologies,” he affirmed.

Finally, Seung promised that the company would be showcasing even more products that enable us all to achieve a better world for generations to come at the company’s Unpacked event later in the week. “Together, we believe we can build a better normal for all,” he concluded.

Samsung Electronics shared its vision for the future at the 2021 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The company introduced new products at its virtual press conference, showing how it’s continuing to innovate by creating solutions that are flexible, intelligently connected, and use AI to understand context to make daily life seamless.

“Our world looks different, and many of you have been faced with a new reality–one where, among other things, your home has taken on a greater significance,” said Sebastian Seung, President and Head of Samsung Research, the advanced R&D hub of the company that leads the development of future technologies for Samsung Electronics’ SET (end-products), addressing the company’s efforts to enhance the at-home technology experience. “Our innovations are designed to provide more personal and more intuitive experiences that express your personality. We’re hard at work to bring you next-generation innovation, with AI as the core enabler, for your better tomorrow.”

Creating More Intimate and Personalized User Experiences

As people spent more time at home last year, the tech they wanted became the tech they needed. In relying on that tech, people came to understand many ways connected solutions could make life easier. TVs were vital for entertainment—and sometimes, fitness. Chromebooks became crucial home learning tools. Smart fridges helped with remote shopping and meal prep. Smartphones were indispensable.

Samsung’s continued investments in innovations that adapt to evolving lifestyles enable the company to keep pace with rapid changes. Key innovations unveiled include:

Samsung Bespoke 4-Door Flex: The latest version of the Bespoke refrigerator features changeable panels that come with a choice of colors and materials that made the original a success, allowing consumers to adjust their fridge for form and function. The new 4-Door model, available in North America this spring, also includes a brand-new Beverage Center, which gives quick access to a water dispenser and an automatically-filled water pitcher. Samsung Bespoke 4-Door Flex also comes equipped with a Dual Auto Ice Maker which makes not only regular cubed ice but also smaller ‘ice bites’ to suit different preferences for cold beverages.

110-inch MICRO LED: This new screen features self-lit inorganic LED with a slim and nearly bezel-less Infinity Screen design that seamlessly blends into the living space. The result is a spectacularly immersive viewing experience with astounding picture quality. The 110-inch MICRO LED also adds “4Vue” (Quad View), a four-way viewing option—so you can keep up with multiple sports at once, or stream a tutorial while playing a video game. Also, for US consumers, more than 160 free channels1 are available through Samsung TV Plus. MICRO LED will be rolled out globally beginning this spring.2

Lifestyle TV: Samsung’s cutting-edge lifestyle TV lineup includes The Serif, The Frame, The Sero and The Terrace—a recently launched 4K QLED outdoor TV—as well as Samsung The Premiere, a cinema-like quality 4K laser projector.

SmartThings Cooking: A new service from Samsung SmartThings is designed to make your culinary journey seamless. An automatic Meal Planner powered by Whisk’s Food AI recommends meals for the whole week, makes shopping lists with the ingredients you need, and connects to grocery retailers for one-stop shopping straight from the Family Hub refrigerator or your mobile screen. Recipe instructions can be sent directly to synced Samsung cooking devices to minimize hassles and mistakes.3

Samsung Health Smart Trainer on Samsung 2021 TVs: Samsung Health seamlessly transforms the home into a personal gym, and the new Smart Trainer4 feature tracks and analyzes posture in real time, just like a personal trainer. During and post-workout, Smart Trainer provides feedback on form, helps you count your reps, and estimates calories burned. With video and interactive training via Bixby-enabled voice control, Samsung Health Smart Trainer elevates and personalizes the home workout experience.

Bringing AI and Robots to Daily Life Including Housekeeping

Samsung has long been at the forefront of AI and robotics innovation, leveraging its seven global AI research centers to advance technology. By bringing AI to its products, Samsung is creating new home experiences—from washing machines that optimize water usage, detergents, and wash cycles, to TVs with a Quantum AI Processor that can upscale HD content into pristine 8K resolution.

The major technologies featured during Samsung’s press conference include the following:

JetBot 90 AI+: Coming to the US 1H 2021, this new vacuum cleaner uses object recognition technology to identify and classify objects to decide the best cleaning path. LiDAR and 3D sensors allow JetBot 90 AI+ to avoid cables and small objects, while still cleaning hard-to-reach corners in your home. Also outfitted with a camera, JetBot 90 AI+ is integrated with the SmartThings app to assist you with home monitoring.

Samsung Bot Care5: The latest development in Samsung’s growing robotics lineup, Samsung Bot Care is designed use AI to recognize and respond to your behavior. It will be able to act as both a robotic assistant and companion, helping to take care of the details in your life. It will also learn your schedule and habits and send you reminders to help guide you throughout your busy day.

Samsung Bot Handy6: Also in development, Samsung Bot Handy will rely on advanced AI to recognize and pick up objects of varying sizes, shapes and weights, becoming an extension of you and helping you with work around the house. Samsung Bot Handy will be able to tell the difference between the material composition of various objects, utilizing the appropriate amount of force to grab and move around household items and objects, working as your trusted partner to help with house chores like cleaning up messy rooms or sorting out the dishes after a meal.

Looking to the future, Samsung is also developing other tangible applications of AI technologies for daily life. Samsung is continuing to build on its Samsung Bot Retail, which would guide users outside the home in retail environments, and GEMS, Samsung’s health-focused exoskeleton as mobility aide. These innovations allow robots and robotic devices to co-exist with humans, enhancing their lives and catering to a variety of lifestyles and different environments.

Technology for a Better Future

Samsung closed its CES 2021 press conference by sharing more on the brand’s vision for how technology can enable progress and create a better tomorrow for all. Samsung believes that there is no single all-encompassing solution; a sustainable future requires investments across a broad spectrum. That’s why Samsung is focused on three key areas that are poised to benefit the most from technological innovation: sustainability, education, and accessibility.

“At Samsung, we are always looking for ways to build a better, more sustainable future,” said Sandeep Rana, Senior Manager, Environmental Sustainability Specialist at Samsung, who shared Samsung’s sustainability message at the press conference. “With a focus on the environment, people and society, we will continue to provide our consumers with responsible tools and technologies to address our challenges today and enable a better future for all.”

As part of its commitment to creating a circular economy, Samsung is developing programs and packaging solutions that promote a sustainable product lifecycle—from beginning to end:

Galaxy Upcycling at Home: At the event, Samsung announced an update to its Galaxy Upcycling program called Galaxy Upcycling at Home. The new program reimagines the lifecycle of an older Galaxy phone and offers consumers options on how they might be able to repurpose their device to create a variety of convenient IoT tools.

TV Eco Packaging: Additionally, Samsung announced that its eco-packaging would expand to QLED, UHD TV, monitor, and audio products in 2021. As part of an ongoing commitment to eco-consciousness, Samsung is creating products and solutions with sustainability at the core. For example, Samsung’s new Solar Cell Remote Control—made in part with recycled plastic—can be charged via solar or indoor lighting, reducing battery waste.

Believing that future generations will play a critical role in building a sustainable future, Samsung has also prioritized technology education through Samsung Solve for Tomorrow, which encourages young people to creatively use technology to solve community challenges, and Samsung Innovation Campus, which helps students develop technical and personal skills for future jobs.

Samsung also highlighted at the event how it is making its products even more inclusive and accessible for all. The SeeColors application is designed to help those with color vision deficiency (CVD) to adjust the settings on their 2021 QLED TVs for a better viewing experience, and the Sign Language Zoom feature on TVs ensures that everyone, regardless of ability, can easily enjoy cutting-edge technology.

Lastly, understanding how challenging it can be to strike a balance between our digital and analog lives, Samsung presented the Digital Wellbeing feature, designed to help people take control and manage their digital time—so they can use technology to better our lives and empower ourselves.

Today at CES 2021, Samsung Electronics introduces innovative new home appliances that can help automate daily tasks. The new JetBot 90 AI+ features smart technologies that optimize its cleaning route and respond to its environment. Meanwhile, Samsung’s new Smart Dial Front Load washers and dryers use artificial intelligence to learn user preferences and recommend optimal washing and drying cycles. Both the JetBot 90 AI+ and smart washer were recently recognized with this year’s CES Innovation Awards and will arrive in the U.S. in the first half of 2021.

“At Samsung, we’re committed to delivering new appliance innovations that inspire families, while helping make life at home easier in ways not thought of before,” said John Herrington, Senior Vice President, General Manager of Home Appliances. “By automating your floor care and learning your laundry preferences, these new home appliances remove items from your to-do list, freeing you up to do more of what you love.”

JetBot 90 AI+ Vacuum with AI-Based Sensors and Navigation

The JetBot 90 AI+—the world’s first smart robotic vacuum, powered by Intel® AI—gives your floors an amazing clean with minimal effort.

Using a combination of sensors and AI-enhanced object recognition technology, the JetBot 90 AI+ navigates your home with the same efficiency and care you do. A LiDAR sensor, similar to that used in self-driving cars, detects distance and tracks location for precise movements. A 3D sensor recognizes the difference between objects such as a toy and the leg of a chair, detects even small objects on the floor, and recognizes a room’s shape to maneuver around it. An object recognition algorithm allows it to identify objects of all kinds and map the safest, most efficient route. JetBot 90 AI+ then uses this information to clean closely around items on the floor, while being sure to maintain a safe distance from fragile or delicate objects, and to lower itself under furniture when needed. If anything is classified as dangerous or likely to cause secondary contamination, it will simply avoid the object.

As it cleans the floor, the JetBot 90 AI+’s advanced digital inverter motor maximizes the 30W suction power of its Jet Cyclone system to trap dust from the air and dirt from the floor. The unit’s self-cleaning brush, which has fine fibers made of soft woven textiles, picks up dust from hard floor and reaches into crevices.

When it’s finished cleaning, the JetBot 90 AI+ automatically heads back to the Clean Station, Samsung’s signature disposal system. There, it empties the dirt, dust, and hair it has collected into a bag that you only need to replace once every two to three months.

And by connecting to your smartphone via the Samsung SmartThings app,1 the JetBot 90 AI+ literally puts its cleaning power in your hands. Control your vacuum from anywhere—schedule a clean, set “no-go zones” on a map of your home, or even connect to its camera to keep an eye on your home and your pets while you’re away.

Streamlined Clothing Care with AI-Powered Washer-Dryer Pair

Samsung’s AI innovations are continually changing the way consumers tackle everyday tasks. The new 8800 Series Smart Dial Front Load washers and dryers have been redesigned to make laundry easier, more intuitive, and less stressful.

Samsung is bringing its signature Smart Dial technology to the new laundry pair. The Smart Dial intelligently learns your preferred cycles and settings, then prioritizes them for quick access in a simplified, easy-to-use control panel. It also recommends specific cycles based on intelligent learning of past cycles run on particular days of the week or at specific times.

Its powerful OptiWash feature detects the laundry load’s weight and uses a patented Turbidity Sensor to determine the ideal amount of water and detergent to use in the cycle. It also determines how long to wash clothing, ensuring that clothes come out their cleanest.

Using a stacked washer and dryer has never been easier. With the MultiControl feature, you can fully operate both the washer and the dryer right from a centralized panel on the washer,2 keeping all controls within an easy reach.

You can also use the SmartThings app3 to receive end of cycle alerts, remotely start or stop your wash, schedule cycles, and more, right from your smartphone.

The JetBot 90 AI+ and laundry pair will be on display at Samsung’s virtual CES exhibit from January 11 to 14. For more information on Samsung’s latest products, please visit https://www.samsung.com/us/explore/experiences/ces2021.

1 Available on Android and iOS devices. A Wi-Fi connection and a Samsung account are required.

2 Use of this feature requires DV‑MCK/A1, which is sold separately.

3 Requires wireless network, Samsung account and SmartThings App. The Samsung SmartThings app supports Android OS 4.0 (ICS) or later which is optimized for Samsung smartphones (Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series). This app also supports iOS 7 or later for iPhone models. The SmartThings App is available in the App Store and Play Store.

Samsung Electronics announces today at CES 2021 that it is making one of its most popular Family Hub features available in the SmartThings app. Family Hub won its sixth consecutive CES Innovation Award this year—a testament to Samsung’s innovative strides in offering families smarter and more seamless kitchen experiences.

SmartThings Cooking recommends recipes that fit your tastes and dietary restrictions, then builds weekly meal plans to match. As you’re cooking, it sends recipe instructions directly to synced Samsung cooking devices—so Family Hub can order groceries and the Front Control Slide-in Range1 can automatically preheat, while SmartThings Cooking guides you through every step of meal prep.

“Families around the world embraced smarter cooking and streamlined meal planning with Samsung’s Family Hub,” said John Herrington, Senior Vice President, General Manager of Home Appliances. “We are proud to bring these features to more than 33 million people who use the SmartThings app—and we hope to inspire those who are cooking, and experimenting, more than ever.”

Smarter Meal Planning from Screen to Table: A New Kitchen Experience

As people spend more time in the kitchen and seek out new recipes, Samsung’s SmartThings Cooking service can help by bringing all of your Samsung kitchen appliances together, offering a seamless journey that allows you to search, plan, purchase, and prep weekly meals via the SmartThings app on your Family Hub or smartphone—a single platform that you can access anywhere, any time.

SmartThings Cooking recommends personalized recipes based on your unique taste and preferences—as well as what’s on hand—to curate personalized recipe recommendations, so you can plan meals for your family more efficiently. You can even browse the categorized recipe collections to match your craving, ingredient, or mood. SmartThings Cooking also allows you to enjoy convenient one-stop grocery shopping through Walmart, Kroger, Instacart, and Amazon Fresh, using the Whisk network.

Every recipe is laid out to guide you through the simplified cooking process, timing and explaining each step like an at-home cooking class. You can also manage meal prep with one-touch control over cooking modes, temperatures, and time settings, and monitor the entire process at a single glance.

SmartThings Cooking is powered by Whisk, a smart food platform acquired by Samsung NEXT. Whisk’s Food AI brings together user preferences, intent, and environmental factors to deliver personalized cooking experiences. Simply save a few of your favorite recipes into the recipe box and, if you wish, share your personal food preferences and your location. You will then receive customized recommendations.

Although SmartThings Cooking is a standalone service accessible via the SmartThings app,2 Family Hub owners can also enjoy meal planning conveniently from their fridge.3 The smart fridge offers a full-screen dedicated board optimized for SmartThings Cooking, which works with Family Hub to understand what’s inside the fridge and add missing ingredients directly to your online grocery cart for at-home delivery.

From safety solutions that alert you of hazards while driving, to technology that allows passengers to view concerts from the comfort of their vehicles, a whole new wave of connected vehicle technologies is right around the corner. However, to enjoy various experiences on the move, vehicles must be equipped with telematics control units (TCUs) to allow faster data communication in the vehicle.

As the advancement of TCU technology makes an increasing number of in-vehicle activities possible, the communications technology that allows large volumes of data to travel at faster speeds is becoming increasingly important. Samsung Electronics introduced the world’s first 5G-ready TCU in 2019, and now it has turned its attention to 5G mmWave. When it comes to providing large quantities of road information to the driver in real-time and implementing connected-car services, the ability of 5G mmWave to facilitate the transmission of large volumes of data at rapid speeds is crucial.

Newsroom looks into Samsung’s innovative efforts to bring the Automotive mmWave 5G TCU to vehicles.

Ultra-high Speed, Ultra-low Latency and Ultra-connectivity for Connected Vehicles

TCUs capable of tapping into 5G can provide information on the road to the driver while also utilizing rapid internet speeds to enable high quality content to be displayed. While it was working on developing the 5G TCU, Samsung came to the conclusion that 5G mmWave, which reduces data transfer latency to a minimum and is capable of covering a lot of vehicles at once, would be necessary to enable prompt communication between vehicles, pedestrians and infrastructure.

5G mmWave offers 100MHz to 1GHz of bandwidth, which is more than 10 times wider than the 5 to 100MHz of bandwidth currently offered by most wireless communication solutions operating on sub-6GHz spectrum. Samsung, having realized the unlimited possibilities of mmWave spectrum from the outset, has worked on making 5G a reality for more than ten years, starting with the frontier research regarding high-speed digital transmissions at ultra-high frequencies in 2009.

Based on such efforts, the wider bandwidth offered by mmWave allows large amounts of data to be transmitted more quickly, enabling users to seamlessly make use of real-time road information and vehicle-to-vehicle communication. However, the establishment of this technology required differentiated antenna positioning and a TCU design that would ensure stable communication due to high penetration losses, high propagation losses and the ease with which signals are blocked by obstacles.

Mass Data Transmission Achieved with mmWave and Beamforming Technology

In order to efficiently transmit, receive and utilize 5G mmWave, Samsung utilizes array antenna beamforming technology. Beamforming technology allows antenna beams to be concentrated in a certain direction and transmitted powerfully. This technology minimizes unwanted interference, increases transmission coverage and enables data to be both sent and received at ultra-high speeds through more stable connections and faster transmission, even when the vehicle is moving. To achieve this, Samsung underwent a lot of trial and error and extensive testing before producing a feasible circuit design and, eventually, establishing the mmWave 5G TCU.

Automotive mmWave 5G TCU developed by Samsung Electronics

Compact Macro, Samsung’s mmWave base station, has 1,024 antenna elements and supports sharp and precise beamforming. The 5G Compact Macro offers seamless connectivity to high-speed cars driving at 200 km/h, successfully delivering the full benefits of 5G to users.

Beamforming has been optimized through field testing in which the technology was implemented in real vehicles. An optimized heat sink structure was implemented by conducting current energy consumption and heat radiation tests to make sure the TCU would still work in extremely hot or cold temperatures.

Array Antenna Beamforming

The New Experiences Enabled by the mmWave 5G TCU

5G mmWave array antenna beamforming technology is expected to deliver a solution with great potential. When the Automotive mmWave 5G TCU for vehicles is commercialized, rapid and stable communications will enable a whole new world of improved in-vehicle services. What’s more, users will be able to enjoy both safe and entertaining driving, in addition to enhanced V2X (Vehicle to Everything) services.

One of the most anticipated vehicle functions that is expected to be brought closer to realization due to the establishment of the mmWave 5G TCU is complete autonomous driving. This is because real-time communication with no delay in data transmission allows you to be aware of road conditions in advance and prepare for unexpected situations. In addition, the technology will enable use cases such as vehicle platooning and the remote driving of unmanned vehicles. When a driver is driving their vehicle themselves, a quick risk warning service and high-definition road images transmitted with ultra-low delay will further assist in making driving safer.

And opportunities for passengers to access entertainment will be more abundant as well. Traveling will no longer have to feel tedious when mmWave services such as UHD 8K video streaming are made available from all seats in buses and taxis. But the entertainment options won’t be limited to video streaming, with this technology also allowing viewers to access content such as games, live concerts and events, and other brand new multimedia services that utilize VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality). We look forward to watching 5G TCU technology contribute to transforming the in-vehicle experience for users.

What driver wouldn’t want the assistance of a helpful eye that can scan the road in real time to help you arrive at your destination safe and sound? The Digital Cockpit 2021 makes this possible with its 360 Vision Monitoring System. When driving, parking or stopping, the system recognizes vehicles and pedestrians near the car in real time utilizing a combination of four cameras and deep learning technology. By keeping you abreast of everything it sees, it helps reduce risks when you’re on the road.

Located in the top-center of the windshield, the Digital Cockpit 2021’s Floating Window display presents drivers with a variety of useful information. This includes insights on the vehicle’s surroundings, as well as traffic signals, road signs and weather information.

The vehicle’s exterior features a front-mounted screen that allows drivers to display messages for pedestrians or other drivers

To help them navigate uncertain roads, the Digital Cockpit 2021 allows drivers to communicate with those around them using audiovisual methods. The vehicle is capable of recognizing when pedestrians are nearby, and its front-mounted display can be used to display messages for pedestrians to help ensure their safety.

The vehicle’s directional speaker is much softer than traditional, loud car horns, and allows drivers to grab the attention of other drivers and pedestrians at crosswalks in a way that reduces noise pollution in urban areas.

Combining immersive entertainment with next-level safety functions and productivity tools, the vehicles of the future will be so much more than a means to get from Point A to Point B. By continuously updating its Digital Cockpit solution, and unlocking new and enriching in-vehicle experiences, Samsung is bringing us closer to making that exciting future a reality.

2020 was a year like no other, one that quickly and unexpectedly shook up our lives and reimagined our normal. We gained perspective on the things that really matter, like our health and our loved ones, and the experiences we truly value.

And to adapt to our new way of living, we embraced technology at warp speed – using it to connect with others and find new joy in our everyday, right from the comfort of our homes. We used it to continue moving forward – in education, work, and even celebrating major life moments virtually at a time when it felt like everything else stood still.

Last year, Samsung kicked off the new decade at CES and shared our vision to enable experiences that make new technologies increasingly meaningful in our lives. We talked about a world where our living spaces would become workout studios and meeting spaces, and kitchens would become hyper-personalized to your unique needs. Little did we know then that those experiences would become so important, so quickly.

So, while we may not be meeting in-person in Las Vegas this year, this may be the most exciting CES yet as we embark on the next stage of this journey where we focus on experiences that improve your life and the world we live in. Together, we can create a Better Normal for All.

This Better Normal for All is centered around the idea that with the right technology, we’re ready for a better, brighter future. I cannot wait to welcome you to Samsung’s CES press conference to unveil what the Better Normal will look like, beginning with technology personalized for you, AI to improve your home life, and expanding through innovation that makes a real difference to our society and our world. Here is a sneak peek at what I will be announcing:

A Better, More Personalized Experience

Our vision for a Better Normal for All begins and ends with you. We’ve all spent more time at home, expecting more out of our living spaces and for many, this has been increasingly challenging. That’s why we’re introducing smarter technologies that enrich your life through seamless personalized experiences, from helping you master your yoga technique and achieve your home fitness goals, to navigating a new diet with tailored recipes and intuitive connected kitchen appliances.

AI Empowering a Better Home

Ultimately, the Better Normal will not look the same for you or me – it will revolve around everyone’s unique needs and habits. We must create technologies that adapt to our ways of life and add value to everything we do, that make new experiences more accessible and exciting. Just imagine how much easier it would be if you had a trusted partner around the house, an extension of yourself that could help set the table or put groceries away, recognizing and handling objects with care and precision. Well imagine no more, because at CES, we’re going to show you how our cutting-edge research is working to bring an extra pair of hands to your home. We’re advancing our AI-infused technologies to enable you to do more than ever, and we cannot wait to show you how robotics will support us on the journey to a Better Normal.

Technology Shaping a Brighter Future

And throughout this journey, we must acknowledge our responsibility to serve not just our users, but our planet, and our society. While technology can reshape the way people communicate and experience the world today, it is also the enabler of a brighter future. As we overcome one of the biggest challenges of our lifetime, we must stand together to ensure that our Better Normal also benefits the generations to come.

At CES, Samsung will share more about its sustainability vision.

As a global leader in technology, breaking down barriers to a better future will continue to be pivotal to our mission as we put people, society and the planet at the center of everything we do.

We are at the beginning of a very unique opportunity to not just overcome the past year’s adversity, but to create a Better Normal for All, and I’m so excited to share more about how Samsung is making this a reality. I hope you’ll join me for the Samsung virtual CES press conference on Monday, January 11th.

There are essential elements to making the dreams of those who launch start-ups come true – from brilliant ideas, to esteemed colleagues who share the pains, gains, and persistence that allow the ventures to endure. Above all else, these start-ups need a ‘stage’. The stage is where ideas are shared, feedback is gained from future users, and investors meet their potential partners.

*The above images are not the actual ID but a design draft.

Through C-Lab, Samsung Electronics provides opportunities for select projects and start-ups, with the final list of selected companies being announced at international events such as CES 2021. Through not only C-Lab Inside1 and C-Lab Outside,2 but also the C-Lab Outside companies that are selected in affiliation with the Daegu & Gyeongbuk Centers for Creative Economy & Innovation (CCEI), Samsung secures chances for companies to join the international stage. These efforts allow the stepping stones of growth to be broadened for an increasing number of start-ups.

So exactly which start-ups were chosen to take the stage at the CES 2021 digital exhibition? Samsung Newsroom met with two start-ups and one in-house venture from C-Lab to find out more about them as they prepare for the upcoming CES exhibition.

■ Tell us about Food & Sommelier.

We are one of the teams selected as an in-house venture within C-Lab Inside. We provide a service that recommends the best food and wine combinations according to users’ preferences. While collaborating on R&D with the Korea International Sommelier Association (KISA), we selected elements that affect the suitability of food-wine combinations. The elements concerning food consisted of 28 ingredients, 12 cooking methods, and 47 sauces. For wine, the important factors included body, acidity, aroma, and sweetness. After converting these elements into numerical figures, we developed the capability to recommend the food and wine combinations that would prove most attractive to our users. For example, the classifications of foods include beef, chicken, pork, oily fish, and mushrooms, while some examples of the cooking methods are blanching, steaming, boiling, and grilling. With proven recommendations from Korea’s major sommeliers, Food & Sommelier is striving to create a service that is reliable for customers.

■ What compelled the company to provide food and wine combination recommendations?

We have often witnessed situations where waiters and waitresses were confused about what wine they should recommend when helping customers. As we learned more about wine, we realized that the field of wine is somewhat influenced by IT. The global wine market is expected to continue to grow in the coming years. As wine becomes more and more popular, there will be more demand for our service. Once our service is combined with IT, anyone will be able to enjoy dishes with the appropriate wine to match.

■ How do I use the service?

First, start your app on your smartphone and take a picture of the food. Once the program recognizes the dish, the matching algorithm will recommend some wines with high match rates.

■ How will Food & Sommelier change our day-to-day lives in the future?

In the past, customers had to rely on the recommendations of store clerks or price ranges to pick a wine. In the future, however, Food & Sommelier will help them conveniently select a wine or dish based on their preferences by providing information via kiosks, a smartphone app, and tablet PCs. Wherever there is an establishment that serves wine, Food & Sommelier will provide a gourmet restaurant experience with sommelier-quality recommendations.

■ What are your goals?

South Korea is on the fringes when it comes to the wine market. By incorporating the market with the world’s best IT, however, we are sure that the Korean market can come to be a leader in the ‘food tech’ market. Food & Sommelier would also like to go beyond the wine market, and hopes to widen its scope of pairing solutions to include a range of other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

■ Tell us about Counter Culture Company.

We are one of the start-ups selected from C-Lab Outside. We operate a global K-pop online home training service called ED Online K-pop Training Agency. Instructors who have experience nurturing famous K-pop stars provide comprehensive lectures on not only dancing, but also vocal training, fitness, makeup, and styling. This service provides international fans with the actual training that K-pop singers receive.

■ What motivated you to provide this service?

As K-pop gains international popularity, people are increasingly interested in finding out how Korea’s K-pop singers are fostered. Chinese and European singers-to-be are already spending tens of thousands of dollars per year to receive K-pop training in Korea.

We have paid close attention to providing world-class online lectures, and other services that deliver the know-how of international millionaires, at reasonable prices without any time or space restrictions for use. Accordingly, we wondered if we could incorporate this into online services that teach dance or deliver vocal training. Once the future K-pop trainees learn basic moves and receive vocal training online before starting their official training in Korea, the entertainment management companies that deliver the in-person training may be able to reduce their costs as well.

■ How do users utilize the service?

With our service, users can basically take online K-pop classes. By syncing their smartphone cameras, users can use ‘mirror studio’ to compare their moves with those of the instructor and ‘live class’ to experience real-time interactive training. To truly improve, trainees require monitoring and professional feedback. Thus, ED provides assignments for practice every week and professional feedback regarding the submitted performances. Moreover, users can check their progress by going through monthly evaluations along with Korean K-pop trainees.

■ How will Counter Culture Company change our day-to-day lives in the future?

Our service will allow any K-pop trainee to take high-quality lessons regardless of space and time, even if they live far away from Korea. ED is also planning to launch an online audition service in collaboration with some entertainment management companies. In the past, those companies had to travel overseas to find talent, which required a lot of effort and expense. If ED can develop online audition capabilities for those qualified trainees, however, those management companies will be able to find more talent, regardless of recruiting restrictions.

■ What are your goals?

It has been about seven months since the official launch of the service. So far, we have been enjoying meaningful encounters while providing better user experiences and having our business grow at the same time. K-pop is a music genre that anyone can enjoy. We hope that our service will help global fans of K-pop communicate with one another and see their dreams come true by going beyond time, space, and language barriers.

■ Tell us about Salin.

Salin is a start-up that is supported by C-Lab Outside through the Daegu Center for Creative Economy & Innovation. With Salin, users can create avatars that resemble themselves to share content and communicate in virtual or augmented reality (VR or AR). There are many cooperative platforms in the market, although the purpose of those platforms is generally limited to meetings and training. Salin’s platform can be utilized for various purposes such as virtual concert halls for sharing performance videos, online training venues and virtual meeting rooms. In addition, anyone can easily utilize our technology through their laptops and smartphones, which are easier to access than smart glasses and VR headsets.

■ What made the company want to provide this service?

Up to now, most companies have been focused on applying VR and AR technologies to game services. However, we decided that these technologies were more suitable for services in the areas of media, education and collaboration.

■ How do users utilize the service?

First, users activate the Salin app with a laptop, smartphone or VR/AR headset. Once they have uploaded a selfie, they can create avatars that look like themselves and act in response to their movement. After that, all they have to do is use functions such as 3D writing and multi-video sharing to invite others into 3D spaces and enjoy talking with them.

■ How will Salin change our day-to-day lives in the future?

Imagine 50 avatars talking to each other on Salin’s platform – that would constitute a remarkable experience. This is a whole other level compared to 50 people exchanging messages online. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, college students have started using more virtual meeting services for not only studying but also social gatherings. By utilizing Salin, users will not only do better work but also enjoy a variety of daily activities in VR and AR environments.

■ What are your goals?

Last year, Salin’s platform was used to view sports events and performances, for remote collaboration work and for docent services. This year, we plan to launch more services to support large-scale exhibitions and conferences with hundreds of remote users. At Salin, we hope to provide unique services in such a way that more users and companies can combine their businesses with our platform.

Samsung Electronics today announced that it will be showcasing its C-Lab projects and C-Lab Outside startups at CES 2021 from January 11 through 14. Samsung will unveil four exciting projects in progress from its in-house venture program C-Lab Inside. Seventeen startups supported by the C-Lab Outside, Samsung’s startup acceleration program, will participate in the event as well.

Given the lack of opportunities startups have had in participating in in-person industry exhibitions amid the pandemic in 2020, Samsung is supporting the virtual participation of the startups at this year’s CES to help them attract potential investors and buyers. Also exhibiting at CES for the first time this year are local startups incubated by Samsung in collaboration with Daegu Center for Creative Economy & Innovation and Gyeong-buk Center for Creative Economy & Innovation.

C-Lab Inside: Four Projects Catering to Unique Consumer Lifestyles to be Exhibited

C-Lab Inside, which began in 2012, is an in-house idea incubation program that encourages and nurtures innovative ideas from Samsung employees. This will be the sixth consecutive year C-Lab is participating in CES. The C-Lab Inside projects to be unveiled this year focuses on personalized products and services catering to diverse lifestyles. Product marketability and customer responses will be gauged during the exhibition to enhance and further advance the projects.

The four C-Lab Inside projects are:

EZCal, automated TV picture quality calibration application for cinema-level viewing quality;

Air Pocket, portable oxygen storage device;

Scan&Dive, IoT device & solution for fabric classification and optimal care recommendation;

And Food&Sommelier, a service for finding optimal food & wine pairing.

C-Lab Outside: From AI to Healthcare and Entertainment, Seventeen Startups Ready for the Global Market

Created in October 2018, C-Lab Outside is a startup acceleration program to vitalize the startup ecosystem in South Korea. Local startup incubation programs by Daegu Center and Gyeong-buk Center for Creative Economy & Innovation are also run as part of C-Lab Outside.

Startups enrolled in the C-Lab Outside programs are provided with office workspace, expert mentoring by Samsung employees, opportunities to participate in global IT exhibitions, investor relations and financial support.

Seventeen startups incubated in the past year will participate in CES 2021. The innovations exhibited by the companies include:

AI-based personal information anonymization by Deeping Source,

Real-life avatar creation through 3D scanning and VR/AR content creation solution by Flux Planet,

Growth management device for children by Magpie Tech,

Fashion design creation using image AI by Designovel.

C-Lab Outside startups plan to target the global market starting with CES 2021, meeting worldwide investors and buyers for potential new business opportunities.

Three Startups Spun Off from C-Lab Inside Recognized as Innovation Honorees at CES 2021

Samsung Electronics has been supporting high-potential C-Lab Inside projects to spin off as fully fledged startups since 2015. Three startups from C-Lab Inside—Luple, Bluefeel and Pixelro—await global partners and consumers at CES 2021.

CTA (The Consumer Technology Association) has also recognized the efforts from the Samsung startup incubation program and has chosen three startups from C-Lab Inside as innovation honorees of CES 2021 in the area of health and wellness.

The awardees are:

Luple, which has developed a portable and artificial sunlight device;

Breathings, a maker of an IoT device that easily manages respiratory health,

Linkface, which has received the award for two consecutive years now with its neckband device that monitors breath and heart related bio signals.

“We hope that the startups from C-Lab Outside successfully prove their technological competencies and competitive edge on the global stage at CES and will find new business opportunities,” Inkuk Hahn, Corporate VP and Head of Creativity & Innovation Center at Samsung Electronics. “We are also excited about bringing C-Lab Inside projects to a wider audience. Encouraging forward-thinking innovations both inside and outside the company and providing opportunities for collaboration is crucial successful synergy in technology, which in the end will benefit everyone.”

Samsung Electronics has previously announced in 2018 that it would accelerate 300 Korean startups through C-Lab Outside and 200 projects through C-Lab Inside for the next 5 years.

The events of 2020 fundamentally changed the global home appliance industry. Suddenly, our homes were transformed into offices, restaurants, gyms and more, and we now spend significantly more time interacting with our appliances. Over the course of the year, Samsung listened to users’ feedback to understand how these shifts had changed their expectations of home appliances, and analyzed those insights to select a central strategy for 2021: customization.

“Consumers, especially millennials, are spending more time at home and demanding products that enhance their everyday lives with customized features,” said JaeSeung Lee, President and Head of Samsung Electronics’ Digital Appliances Division. “Great, reliable performance is now a basic expectation. The standard for a better, smarter home experience is now decided by how closely appliances can be ‘fit’ to various customer lifestyles.”

Introducing a More Tailored Take on Appliance Design

Customization is already a key feature of Samsung appliances. Guided by a design philosophy first introduced with a project known as Project PRISM, Samsung appliances cater to users’ unique needs, reflecting their lifestyles just as a prism refracts light into various colors.

That customizable, lifestyle-centric philosophy is epitomized by Samsung’s Bespoke refrigerators. The company’s flagship refrigerator lineup was first introduced in Korea in 2019, and has since expanded into global markets. Offering multiple types of modules (1-Door, BMF, 4-Door), along with panels that can be customized with various colors and finishes, the Bespoke range challenges industry norms by empowering users to customize their fridge to their décor, rather than vice versa.

Bespoke turned out to be a game-changer, driving two-thirds of refrigerator sales in Korea, and proving that consumers – particularly millennials – are in the market for appliances that answer their unique lifestyle needs. The refrigerators went on to launch in select markets around the world, bringing a revolution in home appliances wherever they went.

Launching the ‘Bespoke Home’ Era

In Samsung’s vision for the future, the concept of customizing appliances to fit users’ lifestyles does not stop with refrigerators. Indeed, the company is constantly exploring ways to add customizable elements to a wide range of appliances – from staple appliances like refrigerators to relatively new categories of devices, including air purifiers and the clothing care device AirDresser.

The company’s vision does not stop at hardware design, either. Equipping appliances with AI capabilities and connectivity will be crucial for creating more holistic and personalized user experiences. Washing machines that automatically relay cycle information to dryers, refrigerators that know when milk will go bad, air purifiers that switch on automatically when air quality drops – these are a few examples of how Samsung is using its leadership in connectivity and intelligence to put the consumer at the center of every appliance experience.

While continuously upgrading software in devices like the beloved Family Hub refrigerator, Samsung is continuously enhancing its SmartThings ecosystem with services that allow consumers to input personal preferences and manage their appliances for a more closely tailored experience.

The idea of taking a more bespoke approach to home appliance design will take center stage at CES 2021. Not only will Samsung kick off Bespoke’s entry in the U.S. market with the unveiling of the all-new Samsung Bespoke 4-Door Flex refrigerator, but the company will also reveal exciting new ways that its smart appliances work with users and each other to make life easier for all lifestyles.

“We see the future of Bespoke home appliances as not only being about design, but about performance, hygiene, and sustainability as well,” says Lee. Samsung is excited to present this new way of thinking about home appliances, beginning at this year’s CES. We look forward to another year of developing innovations that put consumers’ needs first.”

Samsung Electronics today announced that its BESPOKE refrigerator will be available in the U.S. this year. To be unveiled for the first time at CES 2021, the BESPOKE lineup will include an all-new 4-Door Flex format that has sleek lines and a contemporary flat-panel design with recessed handles, blending seamlessly into existing kitchens for various lifestyles. The 4-Door Flex also features a new Beverage Center and an improved Flex Zone. The lineup will also include Column and Bottom Mount Freezer formats, allowing for modular configurations that can grow to fit each household’s unique needs.

BESPOKE refrigerators offer a dynamic mix of design options, with eight unique colors and glass or steel finishes. Color options include Grey Glass, Sky Blue Glass, Navy Steel, Champagne Steel, Matte Black Steel, Navy Glass, White Glass, and Rose Pink Glass.

“As families spend more time at home—and in the heart of the home, the kitchen—they’re investing in home appliances they can personalize, which is exactly what our BESPOKE lineup offers,” said John Herrington, Senior Vice President, General Manager of Home Appliances. “BESPOKE refrigerators are customizable on the outside with a variety of colors, materials, and finishes that you can select to match your style, and also customizable on the inside with convertible drawers and other unique features.”

The 4-Door Flex Brings New Features for All Your Refrigeration Needs

Maintaining the sleek overall design of the unit, Samsung Bespoke 4-Door Flex comes with a new Beverage Center inside the upper-left door that provides quick access two different ways, with an internal, filtered water dispenser and built-in AutoFill water pitcher. The AutoFill water pitcher automatically refills with fresh, filtered water, or you can easily infuse the water with a flavor of your choice. The refrigerator also features a Dual Ice Maker, which can make not only regular ice cubes but also small “ice bites,” which chill drinks faster.

Samsung Bespoke 4-Door Flex features an improved Flex Zone, a versatile compartment that converts from fridge to freezer temperatures, offering the flexibility to meet a family’s food storage needs. The improved Flex Zone has five different temperature settings: Freeze, Soft Freeze, Meat/Fish, Fruits/Veggies, and Beverage. There is also a Flex Crisper that allows you to store meat or fish at the optimal temperature, as well as a Crisper+ that keeps your fruit and vegetables fresher for longer.

In addition to the U.S., Samsung is also introducing the BESPOKE refrigerator lineup across the MENA and European regions in 2021—expanding beyond the Northern European and Asian markets where it is currently available.
