The campaign aims to deliver these core values and the messages behind them to consumers in over 50 countries through various digital platforms, including Samsung.com, YouTube and social media channels, beginning October 20.

To kick off the campaign, Samsung released a video that highlights the innovative AI technologies behind Bespoke AI. Samsung’s refrigerators, ovens and other home appliances work together to create an intelligent AI kitchen. Products like the all-in-one washer-dryer deliver optimized performance for every cycle, while the robot vacuum cleaner provides personalized experiences tailored to users’ lifestyles and needs.

Robust security ensures users can enjoy their smart appliances with confidence.2 In particular, Knox provides thorough protection from malware and external threats. Also, SmartThings, with its unparalleled connectivity, serves as the central engine of the AI home.

Samsung continues to strengthen the quality, durability, and customer service of its home appliances to ensure lasting reliability throughout each product’s lifecycle. Leveraging its competitive edge in key components such as compressors and motors, the company further elevates the user experience by offering the Home Appliance Remote Management (HRM) service3 — now available in more than 120 countries4 — and providing up to seven years of free One UI upgrades5 that keep products up to date with the latest AI features and security enhancements.

“The ‘Why Samsung’ campaign brings together what truly defines Samsung appliances — innovative Bespoke AI, seamless SmartThings connectivity, trusted Knox security, and lasting reliability,” said Jessie Song, Vice President and Head of Marketing Group at Digital Appliances (DA) Business, Samsung Electronics. “Moving forward, we will continue to deliver compelling messages to consumers worldwide about why they should choose Samsung appliances.”

Samsung Newsroom will be presenting a series of four interviews that delve into each of these core values.

Samsung Electronics unveiled its refreshed “AI Home” vision and innovative appliance lineup at its global launch event, Welcome to Bespoke AI, in Seoul, Korea. With a focus on providing a more secure and intuitive user experience, the company introduced an AI Home experience, showcasing advanced AI features and a wider range of screen-enabled appliances.

Jeong Seung Moon, EVP and Head of the R&D Team for Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics, opened the global press conference by introducing the company’s vision for creating an AI Home that harmoniously connects various devices and, as a result, caters to user needs in every room of the home.

“Through our Bespoke AI appliances, Samsung has brought an AI Home to life that not only enhances everyday convenience but also enables energy savings and care,” said Jeong Seung Moon. “We will continue to expand the advanced AI Home to more households, leveraging smart screens, Bixby and Knox security.”

▲ Samsung unveiled the new Bespoke AI appliances for 2025.

During the event, Samsung introduced its Bespoke AI appliances for 2025, which bring new and innovative functionalities to solve users’ difficult problems.

At the heart of the company’s vision is the AI Home display.1 Built upon the innovation of the first introduction of the AI Home display last year, the AI Home with new size options has been expanded to a broad range of new products, such as Bespoke AI Refrigerators, the Bespoke AI Laundry Vented Combo, Washers and Dryers.2

The 9-inch AI Home screen on the Bespoke AI Refrigerator lineup increases consumers’ options by offering a similar experience to what’s available on the larger AI Family Hub screen. With the upgraded AI Vision Inside,3 food management has been enhanced with new features such as recognition of processed food items,4 for models with the AI Family Hub and those with the AI Home. Through the 7-inch AI Home in the Bespoke AI Laundry, users can intuitively control the washing and drying cycles, as well as monitor and control other connected devices.5

Moreover, the new Bespoke AI appliances bring enhanced features that adapt to consumer needs. For example, the Bespoke AI Hybrid Refrigerator utilizes AI to efficiently cool the inside of the fridge, detecting its current status and predicting internal temperature changes to effectively adapt cooling.

The Bespoke AI Laundry includes new functions to enhance consumer convenience, with new standalone models that have upgraded AI Wash and AI Dry to AI Wash+ and AI Dry+,6 as well as models to be launched in Europe, using up to 55% less energy than class A minimum requirements for the washer.7 Also, Samsung unveiled the new Bespoke AI Laundry Vented Combo, which is the first ever vented combo in its class.8 It significantly reduces drying time, finishing both washing and drying in 68 minutes with its Super Speed cycle.

Samsung is continuing to innovate its vacuum cleaner lineup, as well. The cordless stick vacuum cleaner, the Bespoke AI Jet Ultra, will be launched with the world’s most powerful9 suction power of up to 400W.10 The upgraded AI Cleaning Mode 2.011 classifies more diverse environments12 like corners13 and the type of carpets14 for improved cleaning performance.

Samsung also revealed the Bespoke AI Jet Bot Steam Ultra.15 Not only is the robot vacuum cleaner designed to climb thresholds, but it is also enhanced with AI Object Recognition for complex environments,16 which can recognize obstacles as small as 1cm, and even transparent liquids17 for better cleaning results. And when it encounters corners or walls, the brush pops out, allowing it to clean areas that can be difficult for typical robot vacuum cleaners to deal with.

Samsung Home Appliances Bring Easy To Use, Care and Saving to Consumers

Samsung elaborated further on its “AI Home” vision and its commitment to integrating AI across the connected experience to cater to diverse lifestyles — through the core benefits of Easy to Use, Care and Saving.

Thanks to the adoption of the AI Home display, users will find it easier than ever to engage with the full functionality of their Bespoke AI appliances. The smart screen is now an even better central control hub, even connecting third party devices through SmartThings without the need for a separate hub device.18 Users can also utilize features like the refrigerators’ Daily Board to receive personalized information and better manage their day — or use Map View to effortlessly monitor and control other connected devices.

The upgraded Bixby allows for easier control of appliances through voice commands and enhances usability through new features like Voice ID.19 It personalizes services by recognizing the user’s voice, automatically switching to the Samsung account of the speaker and showing their calendar on the screen. And if that person also uses the low vision option on their Galaxy smartphone, it will be automatically synced to the screen for a better viewing experience.

New SmartThings services were also introduced during the event, including Family Care,20 which sends an alert to other family members if a user’s movement is not detected at the set time — or if there is no activity for a certain amount of time after the last activity. It is also possible to use the robot vacuum cleaner to look for signs of an emergency, with all of this functionality being tightly secured by Samsung Knox.

Continued Efforts To Deliver Reliable Experiences

To complete its “AI Home” vision for 2025, Samsung shone a light on how it is pushing the boundaries of innovation, prioritizing a trusted experience for users.

First, Samsung will apply enhanced Knox security to devices across the lineup so that users will be able to enjoy their AI Home experience with peace of mind. This year in particular, Trust Chain, which is part of Knox Matrix, is applied to all Wi-Fi enabled appliances launching in 2025. Users can continuously monitor products’ security status in real time through the dashboard.21

Knox Vault is also applied to home appliances for the first time,22 storing particularly sensitive user information, such as passwords and authentication information, in a separate hardware chip to ensure protection. Furthermore, to protect against the potential of future quantum attacks, Samsung’s security is also equipped with post-quantum cryptography (PQC), a part of Knox Matrix Credential Sync, for its screen-applied products.23

Another key priority for Samsung is making sure that customers can use the latest software features on their existing appliances without buying new ones. With Smart Forward,24 the software update service through SmartThings, Samsung continuously updates its appliances with new features to enhance the consumer experience.

Samsung is also actively improving product maintenance. SmartThings Home Care utilizes AI to diagnose each appliance’s status, and if signs of malfunction are detected, it sends a notification in advance. In addition, a technical support representative can provide guidance on remote measures based on pre-diagnosis results.25 This support feature has already expanded to more countries, including France, Netherlands and Canada, following Korea and the United States.

By integrating all of these wide-ranging initiatives, Samsung aims to create safer and more reliable smart home experiences that users can enjoy with comfort and peace of mind.

▲ Samsung DA held a global event to unveil its vision and new products.

1 AI Home display refers to the 7″ or 9″ LCD screen on the product. Does not mean all services available on the AI Home are AI or generate information or outcome using AI. Certain functions accessible through the AI Home utilize AI-based algorithms, which can be updated periodically to improve accuracy. AI-based algorithms may generate incomplete or incorrect information.
2 AI Home is available on select models, and its availability may vary by region.
3 Available on select T-Type and French Door refrigerator models. As of April 2025, AI Vision Inside can recognize 37 food items like fresh fruits and veggies. If the food is not recognizable, it may be listed as an unknown item. AI Vision Inside cannot identify or list any food items in the fridge door bins or freezer. It recognizes food items based on deep learning models, which may be updated periodically to improve accuracy.
4 AI Vision Inside will recognize and recommend that users save processed food items that have been placed inside multiple times, allowing up to 50 items to be saved with the designated name. Processed foods are limited to those that keep a certain packaged form. AI Home recommends saving the item after it has been input more than 4 times during 30 days.
5 A Wi-Fi connection and a Samsung account are required. Third-party devices must be SmartThings compatible.
6 Based on an advanced AI-created algorithm. It may not detect certain fabrics or accurately identify them when a load includes a mixture of different fabric types. To prevent wear, wash like fabrics together. For US, the names of features are applied differently; AI OptiWash and AI OptiDry to AI OptiWash+ and AI OptiDry+.
7 Based on Samsung internal testing. The energy consumption of this 9KG model is EEI 21.8, which is 55% more energy efficient compared to the minimum threshold of energy efficiency class A (EEI 52 for 9KG models). Energy ratings tested with Eco 40-60 program, 55% savings tested with Eco 40-60 program.
8 Among 27” vented washer/dryers. Sold only in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
9 Based on testing by SLG Prüf- und Zertifizierungs GmbH, in accordance with the IEC 62885-4 Cl.5.8 standard, using a handheld type vacuum cleaner (with no brush) in Jet mode. The results were compared to cordless stick vacuum models available on the market with a stated suction power within 30% of the actual suction power of the Samsung model tested by SLG. Based on sales data between January 2024 and December 2024 as compiled by an independent market research institute.
10 Based on testing by SLG Prüf- und Zertifizierungs GmbH, in accordance with the IEC 62885-4 Cl.5.8 standard. Measured at the inlet of the non-motorized tool when the dustbin is empty, using Jet Mode and a large capacity battery that is fully charged. Lasts up to 1 min.
11 The updated functions of AI Cleaning Mode 2.0 can be activated after registering the stick vacuum cleaner on the SmartThings App. The operation of AI Cleaning mode 2.0 may be limited in certain environments, such as when the All-in-one Clean Station is unplugged or Wi-Fi connection is unstable or the Bluetooth connection status between the stick vacuum cleaner and the All-in-one Clean Station is unstable. If AI Cleaning mode 2.0 does not work frequently, please move the All-in-one Clean Station to a space without obstacles nearby. To enable continuous function updates, keep Wi-Fi on in the house on at all times.
12 The ability to identify different cleaning environments and the time it takes to change the settings can be affected by environmental conditions.
13 When used with Slim LED Brush+. Corner and floor-wall joint detection only operates in hard floor environments. “Corner” refers to the area where two flat and closed walls meet. The suction power increases about 2-3.5 seconds after the brush is pressed against the wall. If the brush contacts only one side of the corner or if there is a gap in the corner, it may not be recognized as a corner, and the recognition accuracy and reaction speed may vary depending on the wall shape and actual usage environment.
14 When used with Active Dual Brush.
15 Product features are still in development and may change. It does not guarantee final specifications.
16 Based on our deep learning model trained using a predefined set of data and may yield incomplete or incorrect information. New datasets may be introduced to our learning model from time to time to enhance its accuracy.
17 A liquid spill is defined as having a size of 7cm x 7cm or larger. Identification may be affected by the size of the stain or the environmental conditions of the floor, such as the floor pattern.
18 Available in the refrigerators’ 32” AI Family Hub and/or 9” AI Home. A Wi-Fi connection and a Samsung account are required. All products must be connected to SmartThings. Only 3rd party devices that are compatible with SmartThings can be registered.
19 Bixby availability may vary depending on the country. Bixby only recognizes certain accents and dialects of English (U.K.), English (U.S.), English (India), French (France), German (Germany), Italian (Italy), Korean (South Korea), Mandarin Chinese (China), Spanish (Latin America), Spanish (Spain) and Portuguese (Brazil). Voice ID will be available starting May of 2025 through Smart Forward update. Launch date may differ according to region and country. Bixby activated Samsung Account is required. Up to six accounts can be registered per device. To increase the accuracy of identifying each voice, it is recommended for you to register your voice in quiet surroundings. Voice ID is done based on the tone of voice used during registration process. Any change or modification to your voice may lead to misidentification.

In addition to introducing exciting new ways to capture and share memorable moments, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ offer users the peace of mind in knowing that their most cherished content is protected by Samsung’s defense-grade Knox security platform, and by the top-of-the-line biometric technologies that have become synonymous with Samsung’s flagship devices.

To offer users greater flexibility and convenience, the Galaxy S9 introduces support for innovative biometric authentication features that add new layers to the Galaxy line’s already stout security. Let’s take a closer look at how innovations like Intelligent Scan and Dedicated Fingerprint will streamline how users access their phone and safeguard their personal data.

An Intelligent Approach to Authentication

To make unlocking the Galaxy S9 as simple as possible, Samsung combined its advancements in iris scanning, facial-recognition and intelligent technologies to create a seamless biometric security solution that offers users fast and secure access to their device.

Intelligent Scan is a deep learning-based verification solution that utilizes the collective strength of the Galaxy S9’s iris scanning and facial recognition technologies to allow users to unlock their device and access protected content with a simple glance. The solution works by carefully analyzing your face’s visible features, as well as the lighting conditions of your surroundings, and determining the optimal authentication method to open your phone. Intelligent Scan’s multimodal approach allows it to ensure that biometric authentication occurs successfully in virtually any environment.

The Galaxy S9’s advanced facial-recognition technology utilizes an immense amount of data to recognize your face’s distinct features from a wide range of angles, and its iris-scanning technology has been enhanced to identify unique iris patterns from greater distances. This powerful combination of cutting-edge biometric and intelligent innovations allows the Galaxy S9 to recognize users even when a piece of clothing or an accessory is obstructing part of their face. So you won’t be required to remove your cap or adjust your scarf whenever you’d like to unlock your phone.

Going forward, Samsung plans to integrate Intelligent Scan support into a wide range of applications, beginning with Samsung Pass. Adding this functionality to the app will allow users to enjoy the same streamlined security when entering website logins and other sensitive information within the Samsung Internet mobile app.

Premium Security at Your Fingertips

The Galaxy S9 also introduces new capabilities to the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor that make this tried-and-true authentication method even more useful.

The sensor, which is conveniently located beneath the camera for easy access, now allows users to register fingerprints with a single swipe, and designate a Dedicated Fingerprint to use to apply an additional layer of security to their device’s Secure Folder. This encrypted folder offers a safe, conveniently accessible home for private apps and files that users can securely lock with their Dedicated Fingerprint, or with a PIN, pattern, passcode or iris scan.

When users unlock their phone using this finger, rather than bringing them to the home screen, the device will automatically display their Secure Folder’s contents. Users can also select how they would like the folder to be displayed – either as a traditional folder, or as a launcher. The latter will launch a secure home screen that’s populated only by their designated private apps, as well as a Secure Folder widget that allows them to easily add more.

Together, the streamlined biometric technologies featured in the Galaxy S9 and S9+ offer users a mobile experience that’s not only more seamless and convenient, but more personalized than ever.

*All functionality, features, specifications and other product information provided in this document including, but not limited to, the benefits, design, pricing, components, performance, availability, and capabilities of the product are subject to change without notice or obligation.

Grab, the leading on-demand transportation and mobile payments platform in Southeast Asia, and Samsung Electronics, one of the world’s largest electronics companies, today announced that they have signed a multi-year MOU to drive digital inclusion in Southeast Asia. Grab and Samsung will work together on a wide range of initiatives to bring the benefits of technology, such as enhanced customer experiences and improved income opportunities, to millions of consumers and Grab driver-partners across Southeast Asia.

Grab is the market leader in ride-hailing in Southeast Asia, an industry that is one of the fastest growing Internet services sectors and expected to be a $25 billion market by 2022 in this region.1 As part of the wide-ranging strategic collaboration, Grab and Samsung will develop customised solutions for the ride-hailing industry, including micro-financing schemes for Grab’s over 2.3 million driver-partners, improved customer booking and in-car experiences, and new mobility solutions. The two companies will also work together to expand into Southeast Asia’s fragmented mobile payments ecosystem and provide a mobile payments solution that will serve the needs of consumers in Southeast Asia.

Anthony Tan, Group CEO and Co-founder, Grab, said, “Southeast Asia is home to the world’s fastest growing emerging markets, yet many in the smaller towns and cities do not have easy access to the growing digital economy. Mobile technology can bridge the infrastructural divide and make economic growth more inclusive. Samsung is one of the world’s most innovative technology companies, and we’re thrilled to partner with them to empower more people in Southeast Asia to improve their livelihoods and provide more digital services for everyone on the Grab platform.”

Sangchul Lee, President and CEO, Samsung Electronics, Southeast Asia & Oceania, said, “Here at Samsung, developing meaningful innovations for the betterment of our consumers’ lives is always at the heart of what we do. We believe in the Internet of Things; the various benefits a more digitally connected world brings, and we are excited to be partnering Grab to provide consumers within the region an enhanced array of digital solutions for their everyday needs. Through this collaboration, we hope to explore how we can work together to tap into the massive growth opportunity of Southeast Asia’s digital economy.”

The strategic collaboration will be rolled out in phases across all countries in Southeast Asia that Grab operates in. In phase 1, Grab and Samsung are offering:

Micro-financing of Mobile Devices for Drivers

More than 2.3 million Grab driver-partners across Southeast Asia will have access to a micro-financing programme focused on giving them access to robust mobile technology, which will reduce the cost of purchasing a smartphone and also lower ongoing maintenance costs with superior software and security features. This is part of Grab’s Better 365 programme that provides more benefits and cost savings to drivers.

This initiative was piloted in Myanmar in Q4 2017, where only 30% of adults have access to formal financial services, and will soon be rolled out across the region. Currently, drivers in Myanmar who sign up with Grab can purchase and own high-quality Samsung devices and get a micro-loan from CB Bank, one of Myanmar’s largest banks and Grab’s local banking partner, to finance the device. In less than three months of the pilot, more than 1,400 drivers in Myanmar have benefitted from this programme.

Enhanced Customer Experience at GrabKiosks and GrabBooths

To make Grab’s services more accessible to commuters and customers in Southeast Asia, Grab will introduce more GrabKiosks and GrabBooths in busy consumer hubs such as shopping malls, hotels and airports. These feature Samsung devices with the Grab enterprise app pre-installed, allowing individuals and concierge services to book a Grab ride for themselves or others, even when they do not have data connectivity.

The Samsung devices are designed for robust everyday use in public spaces. The devices at GrabKiosks and GrabBooths in Indonesia and Myanmar have been installed with Samsung’s Knox enterprise mobile security software, ensuring the information security of Grab’s devices, reducing downtime and maintenance costs, enabling Grab to better serve its customers. This will be rolled out in Vietnam and Singapore in Q1, and other countries in Southeast Asia later in the year.

Infotainment Services in Selected Cars

Grab and its content partners will pilot in-car multimedia services in Singapore, installing Samsung tablets inside cars for customers to view infotainment content, if they choose to, during their ride. This will be piloted throughout Southeast Asia this year.

Grab operates the largest transportation network in Southeast Asia and is one of the most frequently used mobile platforms in the region with over 3.5 million daily rides. The Grab app has been downloaded onto over 77 million mobile devices, giving passengers access to the region’s largest land transportation fleet comprising over 2.3 million drivers. Grab offers private car, motorbike, taxi, and carpooling services across 8 countries and 168 cities in Southeast Asia.

About Grab

Grab is Southeast Asia’s leading on-demand transportation and mobile payments platform. Grab solves critical transportation challenges to make transport freedom a reality for 620 million people in Southeast Asia. Grab’s core product platform includes transport solutions for drivers and passengers with an emphasis on convenience, safety and reliability, as well as its proprietary mobile payments platform, GrabPay, which is increasing access to mobile payment solutions for millions of Grab riders and drivers across Southeast Asia and deepening financial inclusion in the region. Grab currently offers services in Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia.

Our mobile devices keep us connected to the things that matter most. They store important information needed to manage our lives, conduct business and stay in touch with our friends and loved ones. With so much data available and the ability for our devices to serve as access points to multiple networks, services and even other devices, it’s vital to have security that fits to our mobile lifestyle and not security that dictates it. Therefore, ensuring that all facets of our mobile experience remain secure is an immutable priority for not only businesses, but for everyday mobile users as well. That’s why Samsung integrated its Knox security platform at multiple levels, from hardware and software to our favorite applications, to ensure our mobile lives are protected from threats.

Understanding the importance mobile phones and devices hold work, home and on-the-go, Samsung Knox is the security platform for how people really live. From the very moment the device is turned on, Knox continually serves to protect its integrity as well as the personal and professional information stored on it. Inherent to the device itself; Knox protects us day and night.

Comprised of the Samsung Knox platform, products and solutions, Knox’s built-in security is two-fold. The platform begins in the device chipset itself and extends through every single layer of a Samsung device, including the operating system and application layers. The platform ensures Samsung devices have overlapping defense and security mechanisms that protect against intrusion, malware, viruses and many more malicious threats.

Complete Protection in any Environment

Today’s mobile lifestyle allows us to function in ways that best suits our needs. Modern mobile professionals crave a device that operates across their professional and personal lives and they demand high-level security that protects them no matter what. With work and play blending together more often, important apps, information and messages for both personal and corporate life are mixed together on a single phone. This increases the opportunity for unwanted outsiders to access sensitive data such as email, contacts, photos, account information and more.

Samsung Knox makes a modern mobile lifestyle possible by allowing the separation of professional information from personal on the same device through Secure Folder. Secure Folder uses Knox container technology to provide a secure space separate from other apps, messages and information creating an additional layer of security.

Potential Mobile Threats are Constantly Looming

Life moves fast. Every minute of every day, potential threats loom, and for many users, mobile security might not always be top of mind, leaving data and personal information open and susceptible to risk.

The adoption of mobile lifestyles has increased the use of public Wi-Fi. A 2016 study from the Pew Research Center found that 54 percent of American internet users log on through public Wi-Fi networks, primarily to use email and social media. A common misconception facing mobile users is the assumption that public Wi-Fi is safe, especially at trusted establishments like popular coffee shops, hotels and airports. While convenient, connecting to public portals can make mobile devices susceptible to security breaches, and expose personal and business information to risk.

Samsung Knox’s security platform builds a digital fortress around your mobile device, shielding sensitive information from unwarranted visitors and malware attacks so that you can get your much-needed coffee and headlines uninterrupted.

Samsung Knox Protects Your Personal Digital Payments

Digital payments have become standard in today’s mobile world. Without the right security, making transactions on-the-go can put your most sensitive financial information at risk. When using mobile payment services such as Samsung Pay, Samsung Knox brings additional defenses against would be attackers directly to your phone. Through constant monitoring, Knox ensures your card information is encrypted in a separate and secure data vault at all times.

The easiest way for unauthorized access to data is through passwords, meaning simple internet browsing can put your data at risk with poor password practices. The same study from Pew Research Center found that most Americans use and re-use simple passwords that are easy to memorize but are therefore easier to hack. Password management programs like Samsung Pass provide a simple and secure ‘identity management as-a-service’, which enables secure internet access through biometric authentication. Samsung Knox is there to ensure that your biometric data is encrypted and kept intact, allowing users to use their biometric information to browse the web with confidence. *

Samsung Knox at Work

Samsung Knox works just as well for business use. From banking, sales, education and healthcare, to taxi services, advanced computing, airline and automotive industries – all types of businesses are taking advantage of Samsung Knox to deliver better solutions and customer service while keeping the integrity of their – and their customers’ – data intact.

As businesses continue to adopt mobile technology to simplify operations and increase efficiency, security has become more important than ever. The Samsung Knox platform provides multi-layered protection that isolates and encrypts corporate data through on-device encryption, and constantly monitors device integrity.

Samsung Knox goes beyond protecting critical corporate information. With Knox Configure, organizations can completely customize and tailor a mobile experience that suits the environment for which devices are destined. It provides IT managers with configuration, application deployment and UI/UX customization capabilities as well as remote bulk device enrollment and provisioning services, putting them in complete control of their mobile solution from start to finish.

Samsung Knox was Designed for Life

Today’s world moves at a fast pace and requires us to keep up. Sometimes we get caught in the moment and security becomes an afterthought – that’s why we created Samsung Knox. For those inevitable moments of vulnerability and insecurity that life brings our way, Knox is working so you can focus on the issues that matter most.

Samsung Electronics today announced the launch of its flagship mobile payments service, Samsung Pay, in India. Simple and Secure, Samsung Pay can be used to make purchases almost everywhere you can swipe or tap your debit or credit card to make payments.

Apart from allowing users in India to simply tap and pay on the go using their registered cards, Samsung Pay has integrated Paytm as well as the government’s Unified Payments Interface into the app. Samsung has also created a unique digital payment ecosystem by partnering with a number of issuers and card networks. Our Card Network and Issuer partners include Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, SBI Cards and Standard Chartered Bank. Citibank India is a forthcoming issuer and its credit cards will be live on Samsung Pay shortly.

Samsung Pay is a highly secure platform as it works with three levels of security—fingerprint authentication, card tokenization and Samsung’s defense-grade mobile security platform Samsung KNOX.

To launch Samsung Pay, a user needs to swipe up on an eligible Samsung Galaxy smartphone, select the card, authenticate using a fingerprint or PIN and bring the phone near the Point of Sale terminal.

Samsung Pay works with Samsung’s patented Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) technology as well as with Near Field Communication (NFC). MST replicates a card swipe by wirelessly transmitting magnetic waves from the supported Samsung device to a standard card reader. Through MST, Samsung pay will work seamlessly on a majority of Point of Sale terminals in India.

Mr. HC Hong, President and CEO, Samsung Southwest Asia, said, “Samsung Pay is an example of how we continue to push the boundaries of innovations to make life simpler and better for consumers. I am confident Samsung Pay will redefine digital payments and contribute to Digital India.”

“When we launched Samsung Pay, our goal was to enable consumers across the globe to make payments that are simple, secure and accepted almost everywhere. Over the past year and a half, this vision has evolved into building a complete digital wallet solution, allowing customers worldwide to not only make payments but also use membership and transit cards, receive deals and rewards and more,” said Mr. Thomas Ko, Global GM of Samsung Pay.

With its ‘Make for India’ initiative, Samsung is committed to building tailored products and services, customized to meet the needs of Indian consumers. Samsung Pay provides a mobile payment option built natively on the Unified Payment Interface (UPI), a payment system launched by the National Payments Corporation of India. The Samsung Pay UPI solution is powered by Axis Bank and facilitates peer-to-peer (P2P) transfer of funds between bank accounts on a mobile platform instantly. This is an upcoming feature within Samsung Pay.

Samsung Pay also allows Indian consumers to integrate their Paytm accounts into Samsung Pay, enabling them to pay by scanning QR codes securely, generating one-time codes for merchant payments and also do peer to peer money transfers.

Samsung Pay will also be available on the Samsung Gear S3 Smartwatch shortly, allowing users to pay through their wearable device.

“Our insights show that convenience, security and acceptance are seen by consumers as the most important influencers when choosing among different digital payment options,” said Mr. Asim Warsi, Senior Vice President, Mobile Business, Samsung India. “With Samsung Pay, we give our consumers the smartest way to make digital transactions by far. Samsung Pay is highly secure through the signature KNOX Platform, fingerprint authentication and tokenization. We have partnered with major banks and card networks to give our consumers the widest range of choices, and are working on bringing more and more partners on board soon.”

Samsung Pay is currently available on Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy S7, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy A5 (2016), Galaxy A7 (2016), Galaxy A5 (2017) and Galaxy A7 (2017).

Since its launch in July 2015, Samsung Pay has rapidly expanded its service by supporting additional value-added features in multiple markets worldwide. With its launch in India, Samsung Pay is fully available in 12 global markets, including South Korea, the US, China, Spain, Singapore, Australia, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Russia, Thailand and Malaysia.

Growth of Samsung Pay

This rapid expansion has been made possible by Samsung’s commitment to an open model of partnership and collaboration around the world, resulting in collaboration with about 500 global bank partners as of November 2016. Its continued support for both MST and NFC technologies has also enhanced adoption, enabling market access in countries that support either payment option. In India in particular, most retail shops already have regular POS machines with magnetic card readers, which are compatible with MST technology, making Samsung Pay particularly well-suited to the India market.

Consumers in global markets have increasingly embraced Samsung Pay. In Korea alone, over 2 trillion won (USD 1.76 billion) was processed by Samsung Pay in its first year, 25% of which came from online payments.

Beyond Mobile Payments

As Samsung Pay moves forward, it will continue to demonstrate to consumers that it is more than just a mobile payment service. Samsung Pay has rapidly expanded both the variety and availability of value-added services in multiple markets worldwide, adding support for various non-banking cards including gift card, membership, transportation and ATM to consumers. Consumers have been particularly enthusiastic in their response to these services, registering nearly 11 million related cards since their introduction.

Samsung Pay further supports a growing number of services relevant to each local market such as identity cards and barcode payment, with many more value-added services yet to come.

The Samsung Knox booth at IFA 2016 showcases the numerous ways Samsung’s security platform can enhance enterprise efficiency and leverage business capabilities. But rather than simply telling guests about the usability and top grade security offered by the platform, Samsung is showcasing its security solutions in a fun, interactive way. The highlight of the booth is a hands-on experience zone that aims to inform guests about how major Knox solutions can be utilized in the hospitality industry.

Upon entering the booth, guests first verify that they’re a valid ticket holder by authenticating their identity via Samsung’s iris scanning technology. Participants are then directed to the Dual Personal Experience Zone, where they can encounter first-hand Knox Workspace, Samsung’s widely used enterprise work container. Here, guests take two pictures—one in personal mode, which can be viewed immediately, the other in enterprise mode, which requires iris authentication to view.

Next, at the Kiosk Tablet Solution, guests can select which photo they would like to have printed. While they wait, they can check out Knox Customization, a solution that lets a device be customized based on the specific services a business wants to offer its customers. Finally, at the Samsung Pay zone, participants “pay” for their photo securely, conveniently and without a wallet.

The Knox Booth also features Samsung’s latest government solutions, including a hands-on demonstration of its Pronto law enforcement solution. Pronto acts as a complete replacement for paper forms like speeding tickets and criminal records, moving major tasks to the digital realm. It also enables police officers to search databases, check warrants and access records effortlessly. Pronto is already being operated in the UK to boost workplace productivity.

Other government solutions on display include Galaxy Tab Iris and the Galaxy Note7, which integrate iris scanning technology, and SecuTABLET, which provides the ultimate in secure mobile communication via the Secure App Container solution.

Samsung is also highlighting new Samsung Pass service, an ‘identity management as-a-service’ which enables 3rd party service providers to provide users with convenient, secure access to their services through biometric authentication.

Security has become one of the biggest issues in today’s technologically-connected society. We use mobile devices to transfer money, pay bills, and even to share our health information. Nevertheless, most users don’t want to spend a great deal of time thinking about the security of their device. They expect security to be seamlessly integrated into any technology they use.

As a result, leading mobile device manufacturers are beginning to integrate security features, such as two-factor biometric authentication to make devices more secure for their users.

Samsung Electronics is one of these mobile solution providers. The company is using fingerprint or iris scans for optimum security in their new devices. With this identity security technology, you literally become your password. These elements are extremely helpful pieces of a complete security chain, designed to protect a user’s identity and critical personal and financial information.

The Demand for Tougher Protection

While passwords remain the most popular form of identity protection, if users aren’t careful, they can be exploited. Often, individuals maintain poor security practices, such as reusing passwords, choosing weak ones and sharing them with others. It’s also not uncommon for people to divulge their passwords over email or phone calls, increasing the risks of compromised security.

At the same time, password can be compromised via social engineering, with fraudulent phone calls or phishing emails being two of the most common forms. Passwords are also easier to exploit remotely, making a hacker’s job simpler.

As I’ve written before, this all points to the need for a new mobile security paradigm, one based on hardware-based multifactor authentication and biometric security.

Biometrics Unlocks New Functionality

Biometric security has been used in the mobile industry as far back as 2011, when leading mobile device manufacturers brought fingerprint technology into the mainstream. Since that time, biometric technology has changed the experience and daily life of the mobile user. While at first, fingerprint technologies were a way to unlock devices, today they are becoming integrated seamlessly into mobile platforms and services. The mobile payment service, Samsung Pay, is a good example.

And while the technology behind fingerprint authentication and biometrics is important, the functionality and benefits to users has been equally critical to its continued uptake.

Iris Scanning can Enhance Security and Improve Ease of Use

Simultaneously, iris scanning continues to gain popularity. Using the human eye to unlock doors or access devices was formally reserved for movies, but thanks to the miniaturization of technology, iris scanning is quickly bringing enhanced security to consumers. In fact, according to research findings, iris recognition technology is expected to grow by more than 20 percent between now and 2020.

Because the human iris is so complex, it’s the most difficult to accurately replicate, making the iris scan among the most secure technologies. Accurate iris scanning recognizes 266 unique traits, while fingerprint scanning recognizes only 40, making it more rigorous than fingerprint authentication – currently the most popular form of biometric authentication.

And because iris scanning only requires a user to look at the device, it’s also simple and user friendly. While biometric authentication helps improve device security, it also helps improve usability by decreasing the time to unlock and helping to eliminate passwords.

Today’s Iris Scanning Challenges

While iris scan technologies may provide more uniquely identifying data, there are still some challenges. First and foremost, it needs to work as well, or better, than current fingerprint technology. People expect biometric authentication to be quick and painless. If it isn’t, they won’t use it.

Iris scanning technologies must also be able to work alongside other biometric technologies for added security. People also need to be able to trust iris scanning technologies, which means the biometric data needs to be securely stored and verifiably as safe as other biometric alternatives.

Iris scans also suffer from the same issues that other forms of biometric authentication do in that they rely on application developers and operating systems to enable biometric authentication outside of just unlocking the device. Leading smartphone companies like Samsung are well positioned to advance the use of new biometric technology like iris scanning and have the infrastructure that allows users utilize their biometric data for more than just unlocking a phone.

Iris Scanning Evolves with the Latest Devices

I used iris scanning on the Samsung Galaxy Note7 and was impressed by its speed and ease of use. Much like a fingerprint scanner, it is responsive and offers a level of security that provides peace of mind without hampering the general use of the phone. The functionality and freedom thanks to the Note7’s biometric security were also positives. The device allows for different levels of security depending on the sensitivity of the data and application. Users can login either via iris scan or fingerprint scan. Samsung’s mobile enterprise platform Knox Workspace also allows for multi-factor authentication with a password, pin or pattern when combined with an iris scan or fingerprint.

The Note7’s iris scanning capability could be more secure than previous generations thanks to the increased points of comparison and difficulty of spoofing as well as lower false acceptance rates.

In short, Samsung with the new Galaxy Note7 with Knox, could completely change mobile security as we know it. It has the potential to shift the landscape and help introduce a new generation of more secure mobile devices. It could also influence the uptake of iris scanning technology as a new global standard of mobile security.

The Galaxy Note7 is a smartphone that lets users do more. Equipped with Knox 2.7, the latest version of Samsung’s mobile security solution, the device boasts numerous features that are of great benefit to enterprise users in particular. Designed with security, manageability and productivity in mind, Knox 2.7 offers deeper protection of personal and work data, as well as greater convenience than ever before.

A New Knox for Next-Level Security

First and foremost, Knox 2.7 has vastly enhanced core kernel security, thanks to the addition of Control Flow Protection defense.

When a smartphone’s software needs the hardware to do anything, from changing the brightness of the screen to initiating a call, it sends a request to the kernel. As the most central part of the operating system, security attacks here can be the most destructive.

In particular, one of the most problematic and stealthy kernel attacks is called Jump-Oriented Programming (JOP), which is when a hacker tries to interrupt processing to gain elevated access to resources that are normally protected from an application or user. But Knox 2.7 has significantly reduced the dangers of this type of attack.

Knox 2.7 has also taken advantage of the Galaxy’s Note7’s iris scanner to provide an entirely new level of security. Not only is an iris scan more secure and accurate than a fingerprint scan, but its protective efficacy also proves useful for unlocking and accessing the Knox container. IT administrators, working with MDMs, can now apply this unique authentication method, giving them more flexibility in implementing device security.

Yet another new security solution enabled by Knox technology is Secure Folder—a separate, encrypted folder that lets users manage private apps and sensitive files securely. Incorporating changes made based on user feedback, this improved feature comes preloaded on the device. With simple setup right from the Settings menu, along with a user-friendly UX, Secure Folder is as convenient as it is secure. It can even be hidden so that no one even knows it exists.

Unrivaled Manageability

One of the most important elements of maintaining good security in the workplace is keeping firmware up to date. In fact, just a few devices with outdated firmware can create security risks for all.

Knox 2.7 eliminates this problem, giving a company’s IT department more control over firmware updates. Using Firmware Over the Air (FOTA), IT managers can ensure everyone has the latest and most appropriate firmware on their devices over the carrier network. IT admins also now have the option to specify the official update version at their own preferred time without user interaction for more efficient device management.

But Knox 2.7 doesn’t just enable IT administrators to manage employees’ firmware. The new update also makes device enrollment easier and faster.

IT managers of large enterprises usually have large fleets of devices to maintain, and often must rely on mobile enrollment of devices to do so. With Knox 2.7, IT departments using one of Samsung’s Mobile Device Management (MDM) partners can now use cellular networks in addition to Wi-Fi to complete the mobile enrollment of large numbers of devices in bulk.

The addition of the cellular network option to mobile enrollment is especially useful for people in high security fields like the government, where Wi-Fi might not be used because of internal security concerns. But with Knox 2.7, now even government officials can get their devices enrolled and ready to use remotely.

Smarter Features for Enhanced Productivity

Corporations rely on Microsoft Exchange and Active Directory for everyday work tasks. Knox 2.7 continues to support Active Directory Single Sign On (SSO), a feature that allows users to connect to multiple applications that use a common authentication mechanism. It has also been significantly enhanced to better support these services, with many improvements based on user feedback.

First of all, it allows for the storage and management of up to five older S/MIME certificates (the digital signature and encryption standard for email). That way, users can access all their emails, even those that use older encryption keys.

In addition, Knox 2.7 has more sophisticated phone number access, with better recognition of extension numbers. Previously, the Contacts app misinterpreted numbers with extensions. But now, with an Exchange-compatible dialer format, when a contact is entered with an extension, the Samsung device deciphers it correctly and connects to it properly.

Knox 2.7 also brings a very useful addition to the car. Phone Book Access (PBA) allows a user’s Car Kit to access phone numbers and contact information for both their Personal and Knox Workspace accounts without moving the data. Previously, drivers did not have access to contacts in the protected Knox Workspace via a Bluetooth connection but Knox 2.7 allows IT administrators to enable or disable this function.

With the introduction of Knox 2.7, Samsung’s leading mobile security solution is even safer and more versatile than before. Anchored in the device’s hardware, Samsung’s highly manageable Knox 2.7 protects users’ personal and work information, all the while ensuring maximized productivity.

In a world that is more digitally connected than ever before, keeping your personal data safe is essential. That’s why the Galaxy Note7 provides best-in-class security features, like the new iris scanning technology, familiar fingerprint scanning capabilities and Samsung’s trusted Knox security platform.

Samsung’s fingerprint scanning technology has been widely used to ensure device security and protection of data, such as mobile payment information on services like Samsung Pay. But with the Galaxy Note7, new iris scanning technology has been integrated to provide users with an additional form of authentication to reinforce security. With this innovative, highly-secure technology, users don’t even need to touch their phone to verify their identity; they simply need to look at the device’s screen to complete the scanning process.

For Your Eyes Only

Iris scanning is an automated method of biometric identification that uses mathematical pattern recognition of images of an individual’s iris, either from one or both eyes.

To obtain these images, an authentication device scans the iris—which is the thin, colored ring of the eye that opens and shuts the pupil like a camera shutter, thus regulating the amount of light that reaches the retina.

Each individual has a uniquely different and highly intricate iris pattern in each eye, which is completely developed at a very young age and remains unchanged throughout one’s lifetime. This, combined with the fact that iris patterns are almost impossible to replicate, makes iris scanning one of the most secure and reliable biometric techniques available.

As a result, it is widely being used for access control in pharmaceutical dispensing, border control and airport security. Samsung has had success with this technology with the Galaxy Tab Iris, a highly secure biometric device created for government organizations and enterprises in India.

Bringing Biometrics to the Smartphone

Once a user registers his or her iris information on the Galaxy Note7, it is stored as an encrypted code. When a user attempts to access content, such as a protected app, the infrared (IR) LED and Iris camera work together to capture the iris pattern for recognition, extract and digitize the pattern, and compare the digitized pattern with the encrypted code to verify access.

Samsung was able to apply two new components to enable iris recognition without sacrificing the design of the Galaxy Note7. To do so, the device was equipped with a dedicated iris camera, which utilizes a special image filter to receive and recognize the reflected images of the irises with a red IR LED light.

This red light allows for the best range for iris scanning. Furthermore, unlike traditional visible (or RGB) images, which can be affected by iris color or ambient light, infrared images display clear patterns and have low light reflection.

Samsung’s proprietary technology also makes use of the light emitted from the Galaxy Note7’s display so the scanner can receive data even in low light environments.

Together, these components ensure that iris readings are accurate and speedy. In fact, iris scanning requires fewer registration trials and results in fewer false acceptances than fingerprint scanning.

And with the Galaxy Note7, users get the peace of mind knowing that their iris data is encrypted and stored safely in the hardware by the Knox platform, just as fingerprint data has been stored in the past. Furthermore, only one person can register his or her iris information, which means that even if the device is stolen or lost and someone else is able to gain access to the smartphone, the user’s iris information won’t be compromised.

The IR LED of the Galaxy Note7 is also safe to use with no health implications associated with the technology, and received the highest International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 62471 (photo biological stability) certification level. In addition, the device will automatically switch off if it detects that the human eye is too close or exposed too long to the IR LED sensor.

All Eyes on Mobile Security

Leveraging this iris scanning technology, the Galaxy Note7 offers newly added services to provide an additional layer of security.

The first is Secure Folder, a separate folder that lets users manage private apps and files securely via fingerprint, iris scanner, pattern or PIN.

Users may leverage this service to keep private and personal data, such as banking information, completely separate on their smartphone. It’s also a great tool for parents who want to block access to specific games or content from their children. Secure Folder is easy to use and has few restrictions for content storing or app sharing on the device.

Another added security feature, Samsung Pass, enables users to quickly log into websites on the Samsung Internet Browser using biometric authentication. Because users don’t have to waste time constantly inputting a username or password, Samsung Pass adds an element of convenience to the latest addition of the Galaxy Note lineup.

In addition to secure storing and faster access, Samsung is also establishing partnerships with major financial institutions such as Bank of America, Citibank and U.S. Bank to explore the integration of the iris scanner into mobile banking apps.

But mobile banking is only the beginning. As developers start to make use of the device’s onboard iris scanner to enable the verification of transactions and other activities, Samsung’s iris scanning technology will expand to various industries.

As we continue to store and have access to more private and highly sensitive information on our phones, the Galaxy Note7 delivers the security users trust and the privacy they rely on.

For enterprise, iris scanning technology can also be used to authenticate access to Knox Workspace container that is a trusted by many of our enterprise customers to reinforce security via their corporate EMM solution of choice.

Samsung Electronics announced a series of initiatives targeting enterprise mobility, focused on security, productivity and choice. Samsung is committed to helping businesses with their mobility and productivity needs, ranging from hardware to business applications as well as creating a set of unique solutions secured by Samsung’s KNOX platform. These solutions will be available starting with the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.

An Expanded Commitment to Secure Mobility

Android is a secure and trusted platform ready for enterprises to deploy robust business solutions now. Samsung delivers the industry leading mobile security platform, and beginning with the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, Samsung will extend this leadership by delivering Android for Work (AfW) hardened by Samsung KNOX. This allows AfW customers to realize the same core elements of hardware-backed protection that government and other highly regulated industries receive when they use Samsung KNOX.

“Samsung is giving enterprises and professionals the most productive and secure mobility experience available on the market today,” said Dr. Injong Rhee, Executive Vice President and Head of R&D, Software and Services, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. “We believe that the robustness of Android, along with the award winning security benefits of Samsung KNOX will help bring a new level of productivity for businesses that cannot be matched.”

Enterprise Device Program

Starting with the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, Samsung is also announcing the Enterprise Device Program (EDP). This multi-faceted program is designed to give businesses confidence in the purchase decision with respect to security and availability of the devices. There are two core components of the EDP:

Monthly Security Updates

In 2015, Samsung began working with major industry partners and operators to distribute monthly Android security updates on select Samsung Galaxy devices. Samsung has extended their security commitments to now include over 100 countries. These critical security updates include both Android core and Samsung specific security patches. This can give the global customer base assurances they will receive security updates in a timely manner to maximize device security and productivity.

“With Android for Work, we’ve invested a lot to make Android a trusted platform for people to use in the workplace. With Samsung further reinforcing the platform with KNOX and committing to monthly security updates, the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will be one of the best choices on the market today for enterprises,” said Hiroshi Lockheimer, SVP of Android, Chrome OS & Chromecast at Google.

Two-year Device Purchase Program

Samsung recognizes the need for enterprises to have a complete device lifecycle management program in place. Enterprise customers are now able to take advantage of a two-year purchase assurance program for select device models, starting with the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, giving them the ability to purchase the same device model up to two years from the device’s market availability. This program will simplify how customers define their fleet of devices and manage their refresh cycles.

Injong Rhee, Executive Vice President and Head of Enterprise Business Team, recently wrote an editorial providing an in-depth explanation of how Samsung KNOX works and the advanced security features it offers. As I was in charge of the development of Samsung KNOX, I would like to continue the discussion by talking about why KNOX is necessary and where it can be applied.

The Optimal Enterprise Solution for Security and Convenience

Do you remember the early cellphones? Back then, mobiles phones weren’t commonly built for business activities. Even when companies provided cellphones for business use, they were mostly used for receiving calls and sending text messages.

However, the situation completely changed with the advent of smartphones—mobile phones started to gain access to the servers that stored company data. So we developed Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions to prevent company information from being infected with malignant codes and to keep the access to servers and devices away from hackers. MDM is a tool that manages registered information and oversees the access of smartphones to servers.

Despite the constant risk of hackers, we understood that overly prioritizing security could make smartphone usage for businesses inconvenient, especially for management and employees. We wanted to come up with a platform that would provide tight security and be convenient at the same time. KNOX is the result of a design and development process that took over one year.

For personal devices, Samsung KNOX is a prime security platform that protects against external attacks. As an enterprise solution, however, KNOX truly shines. KNOX is the optimal tool that secures devices while simultaneously providing customized services.

For example, take a look at Samsung Pay, in mobile payment services. Because Samsung Pay is about making financial transactions, security is essential. KNOX constantly monitors devices that use Samsung Pay, guarding against signs of malware and protecting payment information and personal data from hackers. Samsung Pay is a good example of how effective KNOX is when used as an enterprise solution in which both security and usability are critical.

Approved by Governments Around the World and the U.S. Department of Defense

The security of KNOX is widely acknowledged and has been proved in highly regulated organizations around the world, such as U.S Department of Defense. Also, this year at MWC, KNOX won as the Best Security/Anti-Fraud Product or Solution by the GSMA.

But of course, it has not been an easy journey, as you can easily imagine. The enterprise solutions market is very conservative and security is of utmost importance. We tried to figure out how we would be able to build a solution that would not only be accepted, but also revered for its capabilities. That is when Senior Vice President Injong Rhee said, “If we are going to do it, let’s make it the world’s best.”

So we asked ourselves, what is an organization that holds security to the highest importance? Our answer: The military. As a result, we aimed to obtain security approval from one of the most secure organizations of the world: the U.S. Department of Defense. As one could imagine, it was extremely difficult. At first, it was nearly impossible even to schedule a meeting with officials. But we kept explaining the merits of KNOX and overcame all the major hurdles, ultimately obtaining the security approval.

Now, governments around the world have acknowledged KNOX’s security: the U.K., Finland and China have officially approved KNOX for use.

Surpassing 4 Million Users in Just 2 Years

Thanks to the security and usability of KNOX, we have witnessed steady but strong reactions within the enterprise solution market. Just two years since its introduction, the number of users who have adopted KNOX as their enterprise solution has reached four million. Moreover, the rate of adoption has been gaining momentum.

It is estimated that mobile devices for business use will make up at least 30 percent of the global mobile device market. KNOX has products that can satisfy all types of needs, from the heavy-duty power of its Workspace to the smaller and individual scale of My KNOX, while also offering customized solutions for businesses.

In addition, we have started an indirect B2B project called ‘KNOX Enabled Application,’ combining KNOX with banking applications. It supports the core security functions of KNOX while making complex business systems seem easier. KNOX fundamentally prevents other applications or unauthorized parties from accessing personal or banking information, while protecting banking applications, account transfer information and authentication certificates.

The Value of KNOX Grows in the Internet of Things Era

As we continue to work toward making Samsung KNOX the best mobile security platform, we are focused on two goals. Our first goal is to create an ecosystem in which partnering companies can freely create and use their products under the KNOX platform. In order to do so, we have opened up various Software Development Kits (SDKs) so that large enterprises and individual developers can freely build their ideas. Our second objective is to provide KNOX’s level of security and service to other non-Android OS platforms by expanding its compatibility.

The true value of KNOX will grow even more prominent as the Internet of Things (IoT) era arrives. As we reach the moment when all things are connected through the Internet, the importance of strong security to prevent personal information leaks will inevitably increase.

Because personal mobile devices will be a central collecting point for various IoT networks, security on those devices will grow even more vital. Similarly, protecting people’s data will become more important for wearable devices and connected cars. As wearable devices gain more functions each year, they are also collecting ever more sensitive information about us, directly from physical contact. The personal data being collected by connected cars is similarly sensitive since it directly affects people’s lives.

With all these trends and needs in the market, we will continue to invest in Samsung KNOX so that it can protect you and provide security on a wide range of devices.

Before the digital age, business transactions and communication relied heavily on direct personal contact. But as technology has progressed in recent years, there has been a rapid shift in how professionals carry out business. We’ve gone from desktop computers to portable laptops, then to cell phones with primitive Internet capabilities, on to revolutionary smartphones, tablets and now smart watches and other wearables. Today, the ability to connect instantly and carry out tasks easily via electronic devices is making work environments more efficient than ever, and is redefining the very concept of the workplace.

The smartphone in particular, being both more portable and flexible than traditional office equipment, has evolved from a communication device to a mobile office, and has spurred a number of business trends. “BYOD” (Bring Your Own Device) is one that has become widely incorporated in workplaces throughout the world. With the ability to use their personal mobile devices for business activities, employees are able to experience an improved work-life balance and enhanced productivity.

To this end, Samsung remains committed to meeting the needs and demands of business professionals to create products that allow for superior organization, security, productivity, time management and, above all, connection. Its newest products—the Galaxy S6 edge+, the Galaxy Note5, the Galaxy Tab S2 and the Gear S2—come equipped with tools and solutions that reflect this commitment.

The Galaxy S6 edge+ and Note5: BYOD Devices that Work for You

The Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note5 were designed for optimized productivity and performance. Preloaded with a suite of Microsoft Office apps, a Cisco WebEx video conferencing app, free storage on OneDrive (100GB for 2 years) and refined Exchange ActiveSync (EAS)—a communications protocol designed for the synchronization of email, contacts, calendar, tasks and notes—the devices enable a completely portable working experience that ensures continuity, whether in the office or on a business trip across the world.

In addition to upgraded productivity features, the large, 5.7-inch screens of both the Galaxy S6 edge+ and Note5 provide the ideal amount of screen real estate to create presentations, edit documents and utilize business applications easily and comfortably. This is complemented by the devices’ intuitive touch interfaces and convenient input tools, such as the QWERTY Keyboard Cover and the highly precise S Pen (available on the Galaxy Note5), which eliminate the need for bulky, heavy terminals.

But even the most useful and efficient device doesn’t amount to much if it cannot keep up with one’s hectic work schedule. With fast processing and 4GB RAM, the Galaxy S6 edge+ and Note5 ensure swift application launch and multi-tasking while fast charging and power saving features keep the devices powered from early morning meetings through evening presentations. And when those presentations require the utilization of additional devices, SideSync 4.0 seamlessly connects the Galaxy smartphones to a PC or tablet to allow for drag-and-drop file sharing.

KNOX: Security and Privacy

As personal communication devices like the Galaxy S6 edge+ and Note5 continue to become a main component of business culture, more and more pressure is being placed on IT to manage and secure devices and data. As such, the defense-grade security of Samsung KNOX provides multi-layer protection to keep data safe from the moment one’s device is powered on.

Users can even keep work and personal data separate, ensuring that corporate information and resources can only be accessed by authorized personnel. KNOX offers enterprise users management tools, KNOX workspace and utilities which include on-device encryption. Furthermore, the security solution provides a vital competitive edge in a regulated industry, with Mobile Device Management (MDM) integration for easy incorporation with more than 120 MDM partners.

Keeping Tabs on Workplace Mobility

While smartphones are becoming a major component of the on-the-go approach, tablets are playing an increasingly critical role at work, especially for those who travel frequently. Gone are the days of lugging heavy laptops, stacks of paper and large charts to business meetings. Now, tablets make it easier to give presentations and showcase slideshows.

The Galaxy Tab S2, the world’s slimmest and lightest tablet, is setting a new standard in this market with its best-in-class productivity features, scalable memory with micro SD and optimized viewing features. Incorporating a 4:3 screen ratio and a Super AMOLED screen, the tablet enhances document viewing and writing, as well as on-the-go reading. As such, its preloaded Microsoft Office apps allow for a consistent office experience without the need of a PC.

And for those more accustomed to using a keyboard, the Bluetooth-enabled Keyboard Cover is ergonomically designed for faster and easier typing, and can be protected, stored and toted with the tablet inside the stylish Galaxy Tab S2 Book Cover. Moreover, enhanced file management and expandable storage up to 128GB secured by improved KNOX-based fingerprint recognition technology ensures that enterprises and users receive the highest standards of productivity and security.

The Next Level of Mobility

Like smartphones and tablets, wearables enable employees to reduce their dependence on clunky devices, communicate with minimal interference and get around more freely without feeling disconnected.

The Samsung Gear S2 allows users to conveniently access their email, make phone calls, set reminders, glance at their schedule and check notifications right from their wrist via an intuitive interface, rotating bezel and stand-alone connectivity (Wi-Fi or LTE). Also, users can discreetly check and respond to texts and emails with pre-set messages or the touch screen keyboard. Furthermore, wireless charging capabilities and a battery life that typically lasts two to three days ensure that the Gear S2 keeps you connected and on time … all the time.

While the workplace continues to transform into one that is as mobile as employees themselves, Samsung’s range of mobile devices and solutions will make staying productive, connected and protected as easy as the swipe of a screen.

As mobile devices are becoming the center of our personal and business lives, we are moving from having mobile as an option to using only our mobile device as the main way to manage our lives. This means that security and privacy have to be top of mind for everyone, starting with the device manufacturer and ending with you, the user. But any system is only as strong as the weakest link in the technological chain, so it is vital to have protection over the entire infrastructure of a mobile device, from the factory at the hardware level to everyday usage, when consumers and businesses are actually depending on it. It needs to be versatile enough to complement people’s lives, but powerful enough to protect their data.

Samsung KNOX, the security platform of Samsung mobile devices since 2013, provides this total approach to mobile security, ensuring that your device is secure, out-of-the-box. Let’s take a look at what Samsung KNOX is exactly, and how it offers consumers unprecedented privacy protection for their mobile devices.

Defense-Grade Security the Moment You Power On

As soon as you power on a Samsung device, KNOX is immediately activated to ensure the device is in a known good state and is not compromised. This happens because Samsung KNOX takes a multi-layered approach to security, beginning with protection installed at the hardware level, right from the factory. It also implements security checks from the hardware level of the operating system all the way up to the application layer–giving users defense-grade security simply by turning their devices on.

Bottom line: All you need to do is power the device on to get the best Android device protection in the industry.

Even More Assurance for Businesses

When it comes to enterprises–large and small-and governments, Samsung KNOX-enabled devices have even more control to ensure security and privacy, and data leakage protection is superior in every way.

First, our device management partners (MDM) such as SOTI, MobileIron, Airwatch and others, provide businesses with thousands of policies that can be created and applied to compatible mobile devices. These polices are the result of extensive interfaces (APIs) made available to our partners. Everything from locking down the camera to protection against unauthorized applications, work together to allow businesses to maximize device protection.

Additionally, we work with many third parties to offer solutions that add more layers of security and protection for specific purposes. Using KNOX Workspace, the award-winning, secure container adds even more layers of security and protection of your company’s data.

Samsung KNOX has earned one of the largest numbers of certifications and authorizations by governments, militaries and enterprises of Android manufacturers. All of these things combined make a Samsung device with KNOX the most secure Android device available.

Security Best Practices and Samsung KNOX

Samsung KNOX, our MDM and security partners all come together to provide maximum security and privacy protection but, as mentioned, all of this is only as effective as the weakest link in the process.

That means that following simple, but important best practices ensure you aren’t the weakest link! Some examples:

Never click on links from unknown sources.

Set your device to accept updates automatically and apply them when notified. This will ensure your device is current with the latest security patches.

Don’t open SMS messages from unknown or unrecognized numbers. Instead, call the number and verify the sender.

Verify all your social media contacts within KakaoTalk, Twitter and others to confirm you know who is sending you what. If it looks suspicious, ask your friend first before clicking on something.

In August, Samsung announced an industry-wide, first-of-its-kind monthly security update to offer continuous protection from vulnerabilities.

Working with our many global carrier partners around the world to implement this process as a timely security update practice, we were able to roll out our inaugural Security Update in October so users can be assured that updates will be sent regularly, in addition to the defense-grade security that KNOX already provides.

We believe your personal privacy and security is of paramount importance, so we released My KNOX, which lets you control your own level of security. You can download the My KNOX app from my.samsungknox.com or Google Play, at no charge. Like enterprises, you can protect your data with the same level of security and privacy. You are in charge of your security settings, so that you have the ability to ensure that your private data stays private and protected.

KNOX Keeps Samsung Pay Safe, Too

Today, Samsung Pay is the most widely accepted mobile payment system in the world. Because it doesn’t require stores to install new software or devices, Samsung Pay can be used on almost any card reading device, just by holding it next to the magnetic reader.

KNOX protects your device on multiple levels to guard your data. With Samsung Pay, KNOX brings its hardware-backed security to the features of Samsung Pay to protect your transactions and personal information. In line with its industry-leading mobile security features, KNOX constantly monitors for malicious activity. KNOX puts to work a series of security features to protect the device, the payment information and the Samsung Pay application, so that customers can focus on shopping.

In addition to KNOX protection, all payment transactions also have three additional layers of security. The first layer is biometric authentication to prevent card fraud when phones are lost or stolen. Since payments are authorized with your fingerprint, your phone only allows payments with your consent. The second layer protecting Samsung Pay is KNOX, which constantly monitors for malware and suspicious activities on Samsung devices equipped with Samsung Pay. The third layer is tokenization of card payment data, which means each transaction uses a digital token instead of the card number.

In addition, if a smartphone is lost, the data in the device can be deleted remotely or the Samsung Pay function can be suspended through the “Find My Mobile” service.

Significant Progress in Mobile Security with Samsung KNOX

When we first introduced KNOX in 2013, it was a solid start to protecting devices and data contained on them. From day one, it has always been about protecting devices, starting from the hardware up.

Through a lot of hard work by my teammates around the globe, we delivered devices that proudly gained certification from the U.S. Department of Defense.

Since then, KNOX has evolved to be the industry leader in mobile security. It is known for delivering user-centric benefits that provide security and protection for both individuals and businesses.

The recognition we’ve received in the market since first launching KNOX has surpassed all others in the mobile security space, giving KNOX third-party validation. KNOX has received certifications from government agencies around the globe, including the U.S., the U.K., Korea, Australia and Finland. Additionally, in early 2015 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, KNOX Workspace won a Best Security Product award, with judges hailing that “the technology behind this product is a genuine and significant step forward in providing verifiable security on mobile devices.”

The goal is safeguarding all of our customers, from the largest organizations to each individual. We consider this to be one of our greatest investments, and it’s an area in which we will continue to build and expand.

Samsung Pay, officially launched August 20 in Korea, has been well-received by both consumers and vendors. Following the early success in Korea, the only mobile payment system accepted almost anywhere, Samsung Pay was introduced September 28 in the U.S. Samsung also plans to offer the service in the U.K., Spain and China.

What makes Samsung Pay different than other mobile payment systems is that it supports both MST and NFC technology, meaning consumers can use their mobile wallet at any store with credit card magnetic stripe readers and contactless payment support. What makes Samsung Pay more secure?

Samsung Pay’s Five Levels of Security

1. Samsung Pay does not display card information

When making payments with Samsung Pay, no personal payment information such as user name and card number is displayed on the screen.

2. Tokenization helps secure your personal payment information

To replace credit card information, an encrypted token is used when making payments, so even in the case that the vendor’s POS terminal is hacked, personal payment information remains safe. The encrypted token is used only once and discarded after each payment.

3. Fingerprint / PIN authentication

Fingerprint or PIN registration is required to authenticate every payment. Only the user can authorize payments, reducing risk of fraud.

4. KNOX

Samsung Pay offers higher security through Samsung KNOX mobile security platform, which monitors device, detecting hacking risks and malicious activity.

5. Find My Mobile

In the case that a user might lose a phone, Find My Mobile (FMM) enables the user to lock device remotely or erase all personal payment information.

Simple to Use

In addition to being more secure and more universally accepted, Samsung Pay is easy to use. After registering with a Samsung account, users can complete registration in four steps. Simply scan or manually input card information, then scan fingerprint and/or input PIN for authentication. Verify card with the issuer and register signature (may vary according to location).

Once Samsung Pay is registered, accessing is simple. Finger swipe up on the locked screen, home screen or sleep mode to launch Samsung Pay. Swipe side to side to view and choose a registered card. To pay, simply scan fingerprint or enter PIN to authorize payments.

Samsung Pay is easy, secure and expedites the shopping experience. Samsung Pay is available on the Galaxy S6, the Galaxy S6 edge, the Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note5. Samsung Pay will also support NFC technology on the Gear S2.

Samsung Electronics, the leading provider of mobile device security, announced Trustonic for KNOX, a new mobile security solution developed through its partnership with Trustonic, the leader in Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) for mobile devices. Trustonic for KNOX increases the trust that service providers can place in the operations and assets stored on a device, enabling the delivery of high value services in simpler and more compelling ways. Trustonic for KNOX will be embedded in Samsung’s new flagship Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge smartphones, and will be made available across a selection of existing Samsung Galaxy mobile devices via software updates.

“We understand the importance of evolving Samsung KNOX to meet the ever-changing needs of enterprise and professional mobile security,” said Rick Segal, Vice President of Enterprise Business Team, IT & Mobile Communication division at Samsung Electronics. “We will continue to provide solutions to our customers and partners that allow them to feel confident and comfortable in using their mobile devices in the workplace. Embedding the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge with Trustonic for KNOX will enable ecosystem players to build new services and applications that will take mobile security to a new level.”

Mobile users will enjoy secure and seamless access to their applications and data without compromise,” said Dr. Injong Rhee, Executive Vice President of Enterprise Business, IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics.
