Samsung Electronics today announced that it has once again secured its position as Europe’s No. 1 selling microwave brand, marking eleven consecutive years at the top of the segment.¹

According to market intelligence firm Euromonitor International, Samsung recorded the highest microwave retail volume sales in Europe in 2025. With this achievement, the company has maintained its position in the region every year since 2015.

Samsung has consistently tailored its microwave portfolio to consumer preferences by adding core features that enhance kitchen convenience. One notable example is CERAMIC INSIDE, a ceramic-coated interior that is easy to clean after cooking and helps preserve its color over time, even when exposed to high heat or grease.² In addition, the surface is up to 24 times more scratch-resistant than stainless steel,³ supporting long-lasting durability.

In 2024, Samsung expanded its offerings with the smart convection microwave oven, enhancing everyday convenience through SmartThings compatibility.⁴ Users can monitor and control the microwave remotely via their smartphones,⁵ even when away from the kitchen. The appliance also supports voice control through assistants⁶ such as Bixby,⁷ delivering a more seamless and connected cooking experience.

Building on this momentum, Samsung introduced new grill and solo type microwave oven models featuring a seamless stainless-steel design. Available in 32L and 23L capacities, the lineup allows consumers to choose the model that best suits their cooking habits and household size. Additionally, the unified stainless-steel finish⁸ ensures visual harmony within modern kitchen environments.

The new models are distinguished by recessed handles applied to both the upper and lower parts of the door, making them easy to open even when installed in enclosed spaces such as cupboards. In addition, the control panel features a simple, streamlined UX that blends naturally into the overall design while delivering intuitive usability.

Samsung Electronics announced Smart Home Savings, a new service developed with Hartford Steam Boiler (HSB), Munich Re’s powerhouse for technology-driven risk management services and a leading provider of equipment and appliance insurance. The service can help U.S. consumers lower home insurance premiums by recognizing the protective capabilities of existing Samsung home appliances connected to the SmartThings¹ platform.

By opting into Smart Home Savings through the SmartThings app, customers let participating insurance carriers know about the protective features of their connected appliances. Homes with appliances that can detect early risk indicators like small water leaks may be recognized as having a stronger safety profile. With the information about which connected appliances consumers have on SmartThings, insurers are aware that a household is equipped with smart appliances capable of identifying issues and notifying its users, and they can apply premium reducing policy credits resulting in lower premiums. This approach not only reduces costs for families, but also demonstrates how technology has the potential to reshape home insurance.

Proven Success With Plans for Expansion

In 2025, Samsung and HSB partnered with major U.S. home-insurance carriers to pilot Smart Home Savings in Florida. While savings will ultimately vary by home, state and insurance company, early results reveal meaningful premium reductions for many. Based on this success, Samsung and HSB are expanding the program to more U.S. states and will extend availability to Europe and other global regions throughout this year. The program is now publicly available for U.S. insurance companies to join.

Aligned with the Home Connectivity Alliance (HCA) Insurance Interface Specification, Smart Home Savings is designed as a scalable open, pro-competitive model, allowing multiple insurers and a growing ecosystem of smart-home brands to participate. Bringing SW Seven-Year Upgrade and Strengthening the Durability of Core Components

Q1. What efforts is Samsung making to strengthen user trust in its home appliances?

Home appliances are used over long periods of time, making it crucial that they remain safe and reliable after purchase. This means product design must account not only for how appliances are used today, but also for how users’ lifestyles may evolve in the future.

Samsung is working to enhance the quality and reliability of its AI appliances by leveraging software, hardware and advanced AI technologies. First, Samsung provides software upgrades for smart home appliances, enabling them to continue evolving over time.² We are also helping customers use their appliances more reliably and for longer through our Home Appliance Remote Management (HRM)³ service.

On the hardware side, we use our manufacturing know-how that we’ve built up over half a century and a vigorous verification system to continuously enhance the durability and competitiveness of our compressors and motors — which are “the heart of home appliances.” We also conduct long-term, high-intensity reliability testing to ensure stable performance, even in extreme environments around the globe.

Most recently, Samsung has further enhanced product quality and reliability by incorporating AI capabilities. For example, we use AI in our digital inverter compressor to help save energy while creating optimal cooling. We further apply AI to our HRM service to detect early signs of abnormal operation and proactively notify users.

Upgrading Both Appliance Performance and Security Through AI and Software

Q2. What is Samsung’s software update policy for its home appliances to improve reliability?

Samsung AI appliances are evolving into advanced devices capable of receiving real-time feature upgrades and, through software innovation, resolving certain issues remotely.

Samsung supports software upgrades for up to seven years for its smart home appliances released since 2024. This enables the addition of new convenience features and the latest security technologies to appliances users already own, allowing products to continue evolving over time.

For example, the AI Vision Inside feature on the Family Hub refrigerator has been upgraded this year. AI Vision Inside recognizes food items being put in or taken out of the refrigerator using a camera and creates a food list on the product’s screen, enhancing the convenience of food management. The number of fresh foods recognized has increased to 37, and users can now additionally register and manage up to 50 types of processed and packaged foods.⁴

Q3. Besides the SW updates, are there ways to improve reliability through SW?

Samsung is continuously improving product durability and reliability by providing its HRM service.

Samsung’s HRM is a system that collects and analyzes data from SmartThings-connected appliances in real time. Based on the analysis results, advisors can assess the product’s status and guide customers on the most appropriate actions — or resolve issues by remotely adjusting settings. This allows users to receive professional care without having to describe issues in detail and in some cases, resolve them quickly without the need for a service engineer visit — saving both time and repair costs.⁵

For instance, if a washing machine is not dispensing fabric softener, a consultant can remotely adjust the detergent box mode. If a refrigerator does not feel cool enough due to overstocking, a consultant can remotely set the temperature lower than the minimum available to the users.

Samsung has continued to advance its HRM service by incorporating AI technologies that proactively detect early signs of potential issues and notify users in advance. For example, by analyzing factors such as laundry room and outdoor temperatures, the system can predict frost risks in washing machines and dryers and notify users in advance via smartphone alerts. It can also detect low refrigerant levels in air conditioners and refrigerators early on, helping prevent issues from escalating into major failures.⁶

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics Canada received an award for excellence at the 2025 CIO Awards Canada, presented by IDC in November, recognized for its HRM project, providing reliable services to customers and setting new industry standards. The CIO Awards specifically honor organizations that demonstrate exceptional innovation and business value through IT solutions.

This year, we plan to significantly expand this service by supporting 17 languages in around 120 countries.

The Heart of AI Appliances: Innovating Core Components With AI

Q4. From a hardware perspective, what sets Samsung’s appliance quality apart?

Building on its capabilities in AI appliances, Samsung is now dedicated to solidifying its competitive edge in core components by pushing the boundaries of hardware reliability.

Compressors and motors are often called “the heart of home appliances” because they are directly linked to product performance and durability. Since 1976, Samsung has been manufacturing compressors for nearly 50 years, continuously advancing both technology and durability. Today, its eighth-generation compressor incorporates innovations that directly enhance energy efficiency and reliability, including ultra-precision machining to a tolerance of one-tenth the thickness of a human hair (5 μm=0.005 mm), friction-reduction technology and high-rigidity coatings. For washing machine⁷ motors, Samsung applies 3D high-speed balancing technology to ensure stable operation even during spin cycles reaching 270 rotations per second. This significantly reduces vibration and noise.

To ensure seamless performance across diverse environments — from the heat and humidity of Southeast Asia and the Middle East to the extreme cold and heavy snowfall of polar regions — the company conducts rigorous stress testing on core components. Refrigerator compressors undergo extensive testing in a dedicated testing space, including continuous operation for 1,500 hours at 85°C and 500 hours at 100°C, to ensure core component reliability.

In addition, AI is being applied to further strengthen the performance and reliability of these core components. Samsung compressors have evolved from digital inverters to AI digital inverter compressors, which use AI to adjust the operation of the compressor’s internal motor to help save energy and improve durability.

Q5. Going forward, how will Samsung further strengthen the reliability of its home appliances?

We plan to continue enhancing the reliability of our home appliances by strengthening the three pillars of software, hardware and AI. Our ultimate goal is to deliver an excellent user experience throughout the entire product lifecycle, from purchase to long-term use, while continuing to innovate more trustworthy appliances.

On the software side, we are improving the convenience and accuracy of features by combining them with AI. For example, the HRM service is evolving its functions to enable more precise product diagnosis and user support by analyzing product status and error history with AI. Ultimately, with AI, we aim to transform the appliance use and care paradigm from repair to prevention, thereby strengthening reliability.

On the hardware side, we are accelerating innovation focused on core components. We have rapidly transitioned our compressors from fixed-speed designs — where operating speed remains constant — to digital inverter technology, significantly improving energy efficiency and stability. Samsung has driven further transformation with AI Hybrid Cooling, which uses an AI digital inverter compressor in normal situations and gets a Peltier cooling unit to work additionally when intensive cooling is required.

By continuously advancing AI-driven core component technologies and delivering ongoing software upgrades, Samsung plans to continue its efforts to deliver “appliances that remain reliable over time.”

Samsung Electronics today announced that its smart home platform, SmartThings, now supports Matter 1.5 — the global smart home standard — making it the first in the industry to support Matter-compatible cameras.

Starting later this month, Samsung will roll out SmartThings updates to expand its existing list of Matter devices, including lights, door locks, switches and various sensors, by adding cameras. With this update, SmartThings will become the smart home platform with the broadest support for Matter devices.

“Samsung aims to ensure that products and services built on different brands and protocols deliver a unified experience through SmartThings,” said Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings Team at Samsung Electronics. “We will continue to expand our support for industry standards, including Matter, and further strengthen collaboration to drive new customer experiences.”

Enhanced Security and Safety With Matter 1.5 Camera Support

Matter 1.5, announced by the Connectivity Standard Alliance (CSA) in November, adds camera support as well as enhanced features for closure operations, including blinds, awnings and garage doors — along with improved energy management.

The industry is particularly focused on the inclusion of a camera standard, as cameras are an essential part of any smart home ecosystem. Matter 1.5 supports a wide range of camera use cases including indoor and outdoor security cameras, video doorbells and more. It also includes features such as live video streaming, two-way communication, motion detection, event history and pan-tilt-zoom controls.

Expanded User Choice and Enhanced Developer Convenience

With SmartThings supporting the standard, camera manufacturers can now launch Matter-based cameras that seamlessly integrate with SmartThings without the need to customize separate API (Application Programming Interface).

Samsung has collaborated with leading global IoT device makers, including Aqara, Eve and XThings, to develop Matter cameras, and these products are expected to roll out starting in March 2026.

SmartThings has already partnered with Aqara, Arlo, Hue, Ring and others to provide a wide array of smart home camera experiences across various protocols and connection methods. With this update, users will have even more options, as Matter cameras can now be integrated easily into the SmartThings ecosystem.

Integrating cameras with SmartThings helps users build a safe and convenient smart home tailored to their lifestyle. This integration enables essential functions such as monitoring the home environment while away, checking on the well-being of pets and configuring customized routines by connecting with smart doorbells.

Strengthening Industry Leadership With the Broadest Support for Matter Devices

Samsung SmartThings continues to expand its global partnerships under an open-platform strategy. Through the WWST (Works With SmartThings) certification program, SmartThings now supports more than 4,700 models from over 390 partner brands. By rapidly adopting the Matter standard, Samsung has also helped bring 58 Matter device types into users’ everyday lives.

Samsung Electronics is taking a major step closer to bringing the dream home to life with its AI Home, an ecosystem that seamlessly connects devices and intelligently adapts to users’ needs.

At the center of this ecosystem is SmartThings, Samsung’s IoT platform and the core engine connecting devices within the AI Home.¹ The service integrates with more than 4,500 models from over 380 partners,² building a vast AI Home ecosystem. The number of home appliances connected to SmartThings has reached 33 million — up about 30% compared to the beginning of this year.³

Q1. Why has Samsung been building the foundation for a connected AI Home?

Home appliances were invented to reduce household chores and have continued to evolve for more than a century. Technology has eliminated much of that labor, but one challenge remains — creating seamless connections across the household journey, from washing to drying, food management to cooking and cleaning to air purification.

The first step toward solving this issue is achieving smooth device connectivity — and that’s exactly what SmartThings delivers. By enabling appliances and devices to communicate and operate in sync, SmartThings ultimately aims to free users from housework and help them enjoy a more effortless, fulfilling life.

Q2. What sets Samsung apart in enabling a connected AI Home?

Samsung home appliances connected through SmartThings go beyond their traditional functions, not only improving convenience by integrating devices but also advancing energy management and efficiency. As an open platform, SmartThings seamlessly connects with devices from global partners — allowing it to perform complex cross-device functions and gain a deeper understanding of the home through a network of sensors. SmartThings has grown rapidly, from 100 million global users in 2019 to more than 410 million as of July 2025 — a more than fourfold increase in six years. Less Chores, More Time

Q3. What are some benefits consumers can enjoy through Samsung’s connected platform and AI Home ecosystem?

When a washing cycle finishes while users are watching TV, a notification appears in the upper-right corner of the screen — letting them check laundry progress. While cooking in the kitchen, users can turn on the air conditioner in their child’s room directly from the SmartThings-connected refrigerator display. With 3D Map View, users can monitor and control all connected devices through a three-dimensional layout of their home. The Away Mode feature in SmartThings automatically turns off lights and the TV when users leave — and even starts the robot vacuum to clean on its own.

Quick Remote is another convenient feature that lets users control their appliances directly from their smartphones.⁵ When a SmartThings-connected appliance is nearby, a pop-up automatically appears on the smartphone — allowing users to operate the device instantly without searching for a remote.

SmartThings also helps users save energy effortlessly. When AI Energy Mode is activated, it analyzes usage patterns to reduce energy consumption by up to 10% for refrigerators,⁶ 70% for washing machines⁷ and 30% for air conditioners.⁸ Samsung is expanding this energy-efficient ecosystem globally through partnerships with companies like British Gas in the United Kingdom and CoolBlue in the Netherlands.

Q4. Beyond appliance control, how does SmartThings enhance family and pet care?

Housework is more than cleaning — it’s also about caring for one’s family and home. SmartThings-connected appliances now extend that care, helping users look after themselves, their families, their pets and their living spaces.

Family Care⁹ supports loved ones who live apart. If abnormal activity patterns are detected or a connected appliance has not been used for a certain period, SmartThings sends an alert prompting users to check in. Through the SmartThings app, users can also set medication schedules — sending smartphone reminders, dispensing the right amount and temperature of water from a connected purifier and even enabling home monitoring through a linked robot vacuum when no one is at home to check in.

Pet Care helps keep pets safe and comfortable while owners are away. On hot days, users can remotely turn on a SmartThings-connected air conditioner or check in on their pets through a home camera. If barking is detected, users can play soothing music through the robot vacuum or stream calming videos on the TV.

Connected through SmartThings, home appliances have redefined their role — evolving from simple household tools into intelligent companions that make daily life more convenient while caring for users and their families.

Ambient Intelligence — The Future of AI Home

Q5. What direction is Samsung taking with SmartThings and AI Home?

At IFA 2025, Samsung introduced the Smart Modular Home — a solution that allows users to experience the benefits of an AI Home from the moment they move in, demonstrating that the AI Home is no longer a vision of the future but a reality.

Additionally, Samsung is advancing ambient intelligence technologies that intuitively understand user context without being intrusive. By learning from and analyzing data across connected devices, the company aims to create a fully automated AI Home that understands users’ behaviors, preferences and routines. The overarching goal of SmartThings and AI Home is to become a true companion in every home — automatically adapting to each person’s lifestyle, freeing them from household chores and providing peace of mind.

To explore the direction, goals and consumer benefits of Bespoke AI, Samsung Newsroom sat down with Jeong Seung Moon, Executive Vice President and Head of R&D Team at Digital Appliances (DA) Business, Samsung Electronics, for the first interview in a four-part series.

Reducing Chores With Bespoke AI, Powered by Screens, Bixby and Vision

Q1. What is the ultimate value that Bespoke AI aims to deliver?

Bespoke AI refers to AI appliances that deliver truly personalized appliance experiences, based on deep understanding of each user’s lifestyle and needs. It’s designed for users who seek more ease, comfort and convenience in their daily lives. Samsung’s product development is focused on advancing the connection between AI and devices so that appliances can understand users and act on their behalf — ultimately achieving zero housework.

Q2. What makes you believe that Bespoke AI can significantly reduce housework?

Bespoke AI is built on three foundational technologies: Screens, Bixby and Vision — and it’s this combination that enables entirely new experiences in the home.

• On products such as the Bespoke AI Family Hub, hybrid refrigerators, washers, dryers and cooking devices, screens allow users to intuitively check and control functions, enhancing both convenience and accessibility. They also serve as control hubs for the whole home through SmartThings connectivity.
• Bixby, Samsung’s voice assistant, is being applied across the entire Bespoke AI lineup. Its growing presence allows users to control appliances by voice alone, offering a hands-free experience that lowers barriers to use.
• Vision technology is built into products such as the Family Hub refrigerator, the 9-inch screen refrigerator, the Bespoke AI Steam robot vacuum and ovens. These appliances can recognize objects on their own to assist with household chores — representing a clear evolution toward reducing the burden of home management.

Samsung is also expanding Wi-Fi connectivity across its product lineup to enable more advanced, connected features. For example, 91% of Bespoke Four-Door Refrigerators (FDR) sold globally are now Wi-Fi enabled.² Samsung has already expanded its AI appliance lineup to more than three times the size of last year’s — and is expected to maintain strong growth into 2026.

AI That Handles Cooking and Laundry With Ease — Even Responding to Each Family Member’s Voice

Q3. What are the unique advantages of Bixby in Bespoke AI appliances compared to other products?

Bixby has been enhanced with a large language model (LLM) tailored for appliances, enabling users to interact naturally with their devices through conversation-like commands.

Voice ID, newly introduced this year, takes personalization a step further. In shared households, it recognizes who’s speaking and tailors responses accordingly.³ When a user asks, “What’s on my schedule?” Bixby will pull up their calendar, not someone else’s. It works just as naturally with photos, playlists and more.

Bixby is also tightly integrated with hardware features across Samsung’s appliance lineup, making control more seamless. With the industry-first innovation of wakeless voice control, users can operate appliances like refrigerators or washing machines without first saying “Hi Bixby” before giving a command.⁴ Paired with features like Auto Open Door, users can simply say, “Open the left (right) fridge door” for a truly seamless experience.

Q4. Can you explain more specifically what kind of benefits Bespoke AI brings to daily life?

Bespoke AI is designed to recognize and take care of everyday tasks that people often find tedious, difficult or time-consuming. With advanced AI capabilities, tasks that once required manual effort and user supervision can now be handled automatically, marking a major shift in how chores are managed.

For instance, the Bespoke AI Family Hub refrigerator is equipped with AI Vision Inside, which identifies ingredients as they are placed inside. It helps manage food inventory and even recommends recipes based on available items. While cooking, it can also send optimal settings to connected kitchen appliances — minimizing inconvenience and enhancing meal preparation. The system is evolving to incorporate wellness insights as well, helping users make healthier lifestyle choices through connected cooking experiences.

The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, an all-in-one washer and dryer, uses features like AI Opti Wash & Dry to detect the fabric type, soil level and weight after clothes are loaded.⁵ It then automatically dispenses the right amount of detergent and selects the most suitable wash and dry cycles, handling everything from start to finish.

Even noise and vibration are automatically controlled through AI Vibration Reduction Technology,⁶ for a quieter laundry experience. These are the kind of tasks that, before Bespoke AI appliances, required constant attention and manual effort.

Smarter AI Appliances That Think Ahead and Act on Their Own

Q5. What is the future direction for Samsung’s AI appliances?

Samsung is evolving the Bespoke AI experience so that appliances not only understand users and their home environments, but also take action autonomously based on each situation. The goal is to allow individuals and families to spend more time on what truly matters by reducing the time and energy spent on household chores.

Looking ahead, Samsung plans to expand the Bespoke AI experience beyond the home to other areas, such as buildings, vehicles and even ships — creating more intelligent, interconnected environments across industries. To bring this vision to life, Samsung is working closely with domestic and global partners across hardware, software and services.

The campaign aims to deliver these core values and the messages behind them to consumers in over 50 countries through various digital platforms, including Samsung.com, YouTube and social media channels, beginning October 20.

To kick off the campaign, Samsung released a video that highlights the innovative AI technologies behind Bespoke AI. Samsung’s refrigerators, ovens and other home appliances work together to create an intelligent AI kitchen. Products like the all-in-one washer-dryer deliver optimized performance for every cycle, while the robot vacuum cleaner provides personalized experiences tailored to users’ lifestyles and needs.

Robust security ensures users can enjoy their smart appliances with confidence.² In particular, Knox provides thorough protection from malware and external threats. Also, SmartThings, with its unparalleled connectivity, serves as the central engine of the AI home.

Samsung continues to strengthen the quality, durability, and customer service of its home appliances to ensure lasting reliability throughout each product’s lifecycle. Leveraging its competitive edge in key components such as compressors and motors, the company further elevates the user experience by offering the Home Appliance Remote Management (HRM) service³ — now available in more than 120 countries⁴ — and providing up to seven years of free One UI upgrades⁵ that keep products up to date with the latest AI features and security enhancements.

With IFA 2025 as a launch point, Samsung plans to bring its Smart Modular Home to the global B2B market.

A Seamlessly Connected AI Home

Upon entering the Smart Modular Home, visitors are greeted by a wall-mounted panel on the right featuring SmartThings’ 3D Map View. The display shows the real-time status of appliances throughout the home, letting users monitor and control devices instantly as they adapt to the user’s lifestyle and environment. At the entrance, a smart security camera² and smart door lock provide convenient and secure access.

A Home That Works Behind the Scenes

As visitors pass through the entrance into the kitchen, the home immediately demonstrates its intelligence. Linked to the smart door lock, SmartThings detects when someone enters, turns on the lights and gently opens the curtains. The robot vacuum completes its cleaning cycle and docks at the charging station, while the air conditioner adjusts the room to the preferred temperature.

Smarter Energy Use

With all home appliances connected through SmartThings, energy management becomes effortless. On a smartphone, SmartThings Energy shows current usage and the projected monthly total at a glance. Optimal Scheduling³ allows the washing machine and dishwasher to run outside peak hours, while the robot vacuum charges just enough during the day and completes charging overnight when electricity rates are lower.

Underfloor heating, cooling and hot water are powered by EHS heat pump solutions designed for the Smart Modular Home. In future Smart Modular Home complexes, SmartThings Pro could be used for centralized HVAC management to improve operational efficiency.

A Home That Transforms for Play

In the multipurpose room, launching Game Mode in the SmartThings app turns off the ceiling lights and closes the curtains. LED lights sync with the game’s visuals and rhythm, while the air conditioner adjusts to the optimal temperature for maximum comfort. The result is an immersive gaming environment that transforms the home into an adaptive, experience-rich space that goes beyond daily routines.

As Samsung continues to bring innovations to the Smart Modular Home,⁴ users can look forward to the evolving future of AI-enabled living spaces.

Samsung Electronics today unveiled a new campaign under the theme “SmartThings Meets AI Home.” The video demonstrates how Samsung’s AI Home delivers innovative, everyday AI experiences that enrich consumers’ lives. Released ahead of IFA 2025, the campaign highlights Samsung’s vision for the AI Home as newly defined by SmartThings.

Samsung’s AI Home understands users and adapts to their needs, delivering a personalized AI experience that connects both Samsung and third-party devices through SmartThings. The video shows examples of how AI Home enables users to enjoy more quality time and focus on what matters most by doing less at home.

In the video, SmartThings Routine adjusts the air conditioner temperature and lighting, while a single tap on the SmartThings app enables home appliances to manage household chores automatically.¹ This allows users to enjoy quality family time, comfortable relaxation and restful sleep. Additionally, through the SmartThings Pet Care service, users can care for their pets even when they are busy.

“With this campaign, we aimed to highlight Samsung’s AI home experience redefined by AI leadership and SmartThings in a way that truly connects with customers,” said Won-Jin Lee, President and Head of Global Marketing Office at Samsung Electronics. “We will continue to make efforts to bring AI home experiences that make everyday life simpler, more meaningful and more human.”

Starting Sept. 2, the video will appear on outdoor screens at global landmarks such as Times Square in New York and Piccadilly Circus in London, and will also be available on Samsung’s official social media channels, including YouTube.

By connecting Samsung’s global connected living platform SmartThings with TVs and home appliances, SmartThings Family Care provides activity notifications, medication and appointment reminders, as well as location-based alerts.² This service offers practical support for caregivers and care recipients living apart, granting peace of mind while empowering daily independence.

Available in over 200 countries worldwide,³ the service’s latest update simplifies the initial connection and setup process. Settings can now be customized with greater precision, tailored to fit each family’s lifestyle and needs. Additionally, integration with Samsung Health makes it easier to keep track of the well-being of loved ones.⁴

Easy Setup With Just One Link

With this update, even people unfamiliar with using apps can install Family Care and complete the setup on their own. Caregivers can simply send an invitation link that includes easy-to-follow guided steps to join the service.

Personalized Experiences for Caregivers and Care Recipients Alike

SmartThings Family Care ensures convenience for caregivers and privacy for care recipients. Care recipients can choose what information to share, while caregivers can quickly and intuitively access the necessary details within those boundaries. This update allows families to define caregiver and care recipient roles more clearly, reflecting their individual preferences and circumstances.

Activity Monitoring and Inactivity Alerts: Peace of Mind Even When Apart

If Family Care detects that a care recipient has not used certain appliances like the refrigerator or TV for an extended period, it sends an alert to caregivers to check in. Upon receiving the alert, they can respond immediately — either by calling the care recipient or by remotely activating a registered robot vacuum with a built-in camera to check the situation at home. The inactivity alert interval can also be adjusted to suit each family’s needs.

If care recipients use the Samsung Health app, caregivers can also view details such as wake-up times, bedtimes and daily step counts — enabling a more proactive approach to health management.⁵

From Daily Safety to Cherished Moments: Keeping Families Connected

With the consent of the care recipient, caregivers  can register essential locations such as hospitals, pharmacies, supermarkets and cultural venues to monitor their visit histories, real-time routes and current whereabouts — helping to ensure their safety when out of the house. This feature is also invaluable for tracking children’s journeys to and from school.

As the event draws nearer, Samsung Newsroom is taking a closer look at the company’s innovation trajectory and how its appliances have advanced into the future.

From the Talking Refrigerator to Bixby, and Now a Voice-Connected Home

Samsung marked the beginning of voice-enabled appliances in 1985 with the debut of its Talking Refrigerator. Later equipped with early speech synthesis technology in 1989, the product went beyond simple voice guidance by offering scheduled playback of recordings, a family memo feature and door-open alerts — laying the foundation for AI-enabled voice interaction.

This early innovation eventually evolved into Bixby,² Samsung’s AI voice assistant introduced in 2018. Bixby has since become the intelligence and control hub of the company’s home appliances, enabling voice control across refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines and more. With Voice ID,³ the AI assistant can now even recognize individual users to provide customized information.

Appliance Screens, Now the Hub of the Home

Samsung was an early pioneer of the concept of “screen appliances,” presenting a vision for the future of connected homes. In 1982, the company introduced a multi-purpose microwave with a screen, which not only allowed users to check cooking instructions but also watch TV and even monitor home entry with surveillance camera functions. Later, Samsung expanded the role of the screen to refrigerators, transforming them from simple storage units into the hub of daily family life.

In 2016, Samsung launched the Family Hub refrigerator — an IoT-enabled fridge. Equipped with a 21.5-inch touchscreen and internal cameras, it allowed users to check the status of their food items and manage grocery shopping online, opening up a completely new kitchen experience. Since then, refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners and other appliances have been connected through SmartThings,⁴ with screens that have evolved into control hubs that let users monitor and manage smart devices throughout the home at a glance.

From Neuro-Fuzzy Washers to Bespoke AI: The Evolution of Intelligent Appliances

Samsung took its first step toward intelligent appliances in 1980 with the launch of an air conditioner embedded with a microcomputer chip. This spirit of innovation continued into the 1990s, when Samsung launched the Neuro-Fuzzy washing machine which features the fuzzy logic IC⁵ and neuro-algorithms, in 1991. Using optical sensors, it detected soil level, load size and water temperature, then automatically optimized the wash cycle — introducing the concept of appliances that sense, decide and deliver personalized solutions.

In 2018, Samsung launched the QuickDrive washing machine, which applied AI-based curation to recommend wash cycles based on fabric type, color and soil level. This innovation laid the groundwork for the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, equipped with OptiWash and AI Optimal Dry, which automatically detect fabric types and soil levels to deliver optimized wash cycles and drying temperatures.⁶

Samsung also brought intelligence to vacuum cleaners with the Hauzen robot vacuum in 2006. Using a gyro sensor, it calculated distance and angles to map out optimal cleaning routes through self-mapping capabilities. This marked a shift from simple dust collection to appliances capable of responding to their environment. Today’s Bespoke Jet Bot Combo builds on this legacy with advanced security and AI-powered camera sensors that recognize and avoid objects,⁷ distinguish floor types⁸ and navigate more intelligently.

Innovative Appliance Lineup at IFA: An AI Home Tailored to You

At IFA 2025, Samsung will showcase an even more advanced AI Home, powered by its 2025 Bespoke AI appliance lineup.

“Based on Samsung’s legacy of innovation, we will continue to deliver greater convenience and value in users’ daily lives,” said Jeong Seung Moon, EVP and Head of the R&D Team at Samsung Electronics’ Digital Appliances (DA) Business. “By setting a new standard for personalized AI Home experiences, we aim to further solidify the idea that ‘Samsung = AI appliances.’”

At IFA 2025, Samsung will highlight several AI-powered innovations aligned with this vision, including the Micro RGB TV with the latest display technology, new Bespoke AI appliances for European customers and new mobile devices that strengthen the Galaxy AI ecosystem.

These products will connect to SmartThings, delivering Samsung’s unique AI Home experience that makes life more convenient, efficient, healthy and safe.

At a press conference on September 4 ahead of the exhibition opening, Samsung will unveil its ultimate vision for Ambient AI — first highlighted at Galaxy Unpacked in July — as part of the AI Home.

“Samsung’s AI Home will become an integral part of our lives, analyzing multimodal information from connected devices to better understand users while seamlessly adapting to their daily needs,” said Cheolgi Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of Digital Appliances (DA) Business at Samsung Electronics, who is the opening speaker at this press conference. “We expect this year’s IFA to mark the beginning of that journey.”

“By bringing One UI to smart appliances, we are transforming the way people interact with technology in their homes,” said Jeong Seung Moon, EVP and Head of the R&D Team of the Digital Appliances (DA) Business at Samsung Electronics. “This consistency ensures that the experience feels natural and familiar across all our devices.”

A Unified Software Experience Across Samsung Products

With One UI, Samsung is unifying the user experience for the product categories of mobile devices, TVs and home appliances through the application of consistent design elements and functionality. This includes Apps & Services like Bixby,³ Gallery and Samsung TV Plus, which are being made available across various types of screens to enable seamless device interaction and media consumption. Device Connectivity is also enhanced through SmartThings, integrating the home’s devices into a unified ecosystem with easy access to helpful services like Family Care, Pet Care and Home Care.⁴ When it comes to Common UI, users will get the benefit of familiar interfaces like Now Brief,⁵ which deliver personalized and relevant information at a glance. Now Brief offers family members a curated selection of useful content, including daily weather updates, family schedules, tailored recipes and home insights such as how much time is left on the washing machine.

7-Year Software Support for Smart Appliances

Wi-Fi-enabled Samsung home appliances will be eligible for software updates for up to seven years after launching, starting from models launched in 2024. This commitment supports product longevity, enhanced functionality and prolonged security throughout the product lifecycle.

Beginning in September, eligible 2024 launched models will be receiving various software updates that bring enhancements in usability, intelligence and security:

• Upgraded Security: Knox Matrix,⁶ Samsung’s comprehensive security solution extending protection across devices based on private block chain technology, will be extended to Wi-Fi⁷ enabled refrigerators, washers and dryers, air conditioners, EHS and slide-in induction ranges launched in 2024.⁸ All of these products will be protected through Trust Chain, which allows connected appliances to monitor each other’s security status. • Smarter Features: Refrigerators with the Family Hub and 9” screens will benefit from the upgraded AI Vision Inside applied to 2025 products, which now supports the recognition of frequently used packaged foods in addition to a larger number of fresh foods.⁹ Bixby¹⁰ is also upgraded to support Voice ID, allowing it to recognize user voices and provide personalized experiences on shared devices. • Service Expansion: Samsung TV Plus, supported on refrigerators with Family Hub, will also expand to Canada, Brazil and India in addition to the originally supported countries,¹¹ and 7″-screen washing machines will support eight additional Indian local languages such as Bengali, Punjabi and Gujarati.¹²

Samsung Electronics is expanding its Home Appliance Remote Management (HRM) service globally, enhancing the remote diagnostic and troubleshooting experience for smart appliances users around the world. The service is now active across 122 countries with support for 17 languages, enabling seamless support for a wide global customer base.

HRM is a service that connects SmartThings-connected appliances to Samsung’s service network, maintaining a continuous record of device conditions and enabling real-time monitoring through the service center.¹ With customer consent, advisors at service centers can remotely access diagnostics data – including refrigerators’ inner temperature levels, dryers’ moisture levels or air conditioner cooling performance – and provide solutions or guidance to solve issues.²

HRM has been used in remote customer support since 2020 in Korea, and was piloted across 10 countries in 2024. This year, the service has officially rolled out globally across 122 countries, supporting refrigerators and washing machines. To facilitate successful global rollout, Samsung has expanded HRM’s multilingual support from English and Korean to 17 languages in total – including Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, Russian and Czech.³

Enhancing Service for Screen Appliances

In line with the expansion of screen-equipped appliances like Bespoke refrigerators and washing machines, Samsung has also introduced a screen-sharing feature to enhance diagnostic capabilities. For various screens of 7”, 9” and Family Hubs, its users can share their device screens in real time with service center advisors, allowing diagnosis of display-related issues, app malfunctions or multimedia playback problems. First introduced in 2021 with Family Hub refrigerators, screen sharing expanded to refrigerators with the 9” screen in July 2025, with support for washing machines with the 7” screen to follow in September.⁴

Immediate Solutions and Reduced Service Visits through Remote Assistance

Samsung’s HRM service improves the efficiency of customer care by enabling real-time remote solutions for simple product issues that previously required in-home technician visits. For instance, for a customer that reported that the washing machine’s buttons were not responding, the advisor was able to diagnose through the HRM system that the Child Lock setting was active. With simple guidance on how to disable the setting, the problem was solved instantly without a technician’s visit. In another case where a customer reported condensation on the refrigerator door, with user consent, the advisor was able to remotely turn on the internal heater, which effectively eliminated the moisture.

In cases when an on-site visit is ultimately necessary, HRM improves the experience by allowing technicians to review detailed diagnostic data in advance. They are able to arrive at the site prepared with the correct parts and tools, reducing repeat visits and significantly shortening repair time. This makes HRM especially effective in large countries and hard-to-reach regions where traditional technician visits may face delays.

In regions such as the United States and India, HRM is also used proactively to address potential device malfunctions before they escalate.⁵ In the U.S., SmartThings-connected devices are actively monitored for a range of potential risks. When a risk is detected, users are promptly informed through SmartThings push alarms, enabling them to take timely action. Similarly, in India, the service center actively monitors SmartThings-connected appliances, identifying potential risks and reaching out to customers to discuss the issue. When required, a service engineer is dispatched to conduct thorough inspections or perform part replacements, ensuring timely and effective resolution for any concerns and preventing major issues from arising.

Growing Adoption and User Satisfaction

The utilization of the HRM system is steadily increasing, with a notable rise in usage rates attributed to enhanced language support across the regions being served. In July 2025, the number of incoming service calls globally that utilized HRM doubled compared to January of the same year. In France, the usage rate of HRM for applicable devices increased more than 30% points this year following the introduction of French language support.⁶ This contrasts with the previous year when the system was in its pilot phase with English, highlighting the importance of language accessibility on system adoption.

User satisfaction is also improving. In India, where the HRM usage rate for service calls is higher than other regions, the customer satisfaction score for remote service calls improved by more than 10% points in the second quarter of 2025 compared to the previous year. Key areas of improvement included the resolution of issues and the professionalism demonstrated during calls, contributing to the overall enhancement in customer experience.

With the continued expansion of customer support solutions like HRM, Samsung is realizing more convenient and efficient ways to care for home appliances – reducing downtime, enhancing the user experience and setting new standards for global service. As HRM reaches more countries, languages and product categories, Samsung remains committed to delivering smarter, more connected care for the homes of the future.

The Latin America Tech Seminar took place on June 3 in the vibrant metropolis of Mexico City, Mexico, drawing media and influencers from 13 countries to experience Samsung’s new lineup firsthand. On June 20, Samsung held the Southeast Asia Tech Seminar at a showroom in Bangkok, Thailand, where attendees explored the company’s latest products in settings simulating both commercial and residential spaces.

Through demonstrations, attendees experienced how the Voice ID feature on the Bespoke AI Family Hub refrigerator can recognize individual voices to deliver personalized responses. Samsung’s 2025 Neo QLED TVs utilizes quantum dot architecture certified by TÜV Rheinland, meeting international standards for true quantum dot (QD) display. Unlike others using the “QLED” label, Samsung’s implementation uses a no-cadmium quantum dot layer and a dedicated blue LED light source to produce brighter and more accurate colors that remain vivid in both bright and dark environments. Samsung Electronics today announced that it achieved the highest market share in the European microwave segment in 2024, maintaining its No. 1 position for the tenth consecutive year.¹

According to data analytics company Euromonitor International, Samsung was ranked as Europe’s No. 1 selling microwave brand based on microwave sales volume in 2024. With this result, Samsung has held the top spot every year since 2015.

Q. What core value or principle guides your approach when designing accessibility features for home appliances?

Using home appliances typically involves a combination of sensory input — such as sight, sound and touch — along with cognitive functions like making selections and adjusting settings, as well as physical actions like pulling, pushing or lifting. These steps can present challenges for some users.

Samsung is working to reduce or eliminate these usability barriers to ensure that everyone can access all features and benefit from the latest technologies. As part of our broader commitment to inclusive design, we offer tailored solutions for different accessibility needs — such as tactile stickers for buttons, audio cues for users with visual impairments and control panels positioned at heights accessible to wheelchair users.

Q. What are some standout accessibility features or services that users might not be aware of?

The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo offers a significantly more streamlined control experience than before. While previous models required users to turn a dial and strain to read small text to select a cycle, the new model features a built-in digital screen with large, easy-to-read fonts. AI further enhances usability by prioritizing frequently used cycles at the top of the menu.

What’s more, SmartThings routines empower individuals with limited mobility by automating device control. A simple voice command like “I’m going to sleep” can turn off lights and appliances, creating a more comfortable and accessible home environment.

Q. What new accessibility features have been introduced in the 2025 Bespoke AI appliance lineup?

In the 2025 lineup of Bespoke AI appliances, Bixby can now recognize individual voices using Voice ID technology and provide accessibility settings tailored to each person. In addition, with built-in microphones and speakers, users can ask Bixby about the appliance’s status and receive key alerts via voice responses.

Moreover, the Auto Open Door feature — highly praised by users with limited mobility — has been expanded to more products, including refrigerators, washing machines, ovens and dishwashers. A light tap or simple voice command like “Open the [device] door” provides easy, hands-free access.

Q. Are there any ongoing collaborations focused on enhancing accessibility in home appliances?

Samsung is actively collaborating with various organizations to identify and address real-world accessibility challenges. We receive objective evaluations and expert guidance from various professional organizations including the Korea Center for Accessibility Assessment & Research. Additionally, accessibility features for our screen-equipped appliances — such as voice guidance and improved visibility — are being developed in alignment with the European Accessibility Act that goes into effect this June.

Internal collaboration is just as vital. The Samsung Family Supporters group — comprised of employees with disabilities and those with family members who have disabilities — is actively involved in shaping accessibility initiatives. Furthermore, the newly established Accessibility Employee Resource Group (ERG) within the Device eXperience (DX) Business fosters open dialogue by encouraging members to share real-life experiences and ideas to improve accessibility across our products and services.

Q. What results or improvements have come from these collaborations so far?

While many visually impaired users found voice guidance for operating SmartThings-connected appliances helpful, some reported that the initial device connection process was challenging.

To address this, we improved the SmartThings app and partnered with TUAT Corp. — the developer of AI-powered visual assistance app Sullivan Plus — to introduce a dedicated mode that recognizes Samsung appliances and helps users easily connect them to SmartThings. Selected for Samsung’s C-Lab Outside startup incubator, Sullivan Plus is expected to further enhance the overall user experience.

We’ve also developed assistive tools based on ideas and feedback from employees and the Samsung Family Supporters group. Designs for these tools are shared on ITDA, a public platform for customizing and 3D-printing assistive devices. One example is a stick-on handle for drawers, designed to support users with limited hand mobility. Development continues toward creating more automated assistive solutions that offer even greater convenience.

Q. What steps is Samsung taking to further advance its vision of “AI for All” in the future?

“AI for All” reflects Samsung’s commitment to ensuring that the benefits of technology are seamlessly integrated into everyday life — regardless of a user’s physical abilities or environment. It’s about transforming individual features into connected, inclusive experiences that make life better for everyone.

Looking ahead, Samsung will continue to embed universal design principles that prioritize inclusivity into product development. This includes gathering input from diverse user groups during the planning stage, leveraging user data to identify new opportunities and collaborating with both internal and external experts and organizations to create more meaningful solutions.

As AI capabilities in home appliances evolve, the goal is to create a truly intelligent in-home experience — one that understands each user, their family and their environment by automating tasks and reducing the need for manual input. Rather than addressing diversity with isolated features, Samsung strives to deliver integrated, all-in-one solutions that adapt to any situation.

We see this as the future of innovation — where accessibility and technology come together to serve everyone, under the vision of “Universal Accessibility, Universal Technology.”

In a 2024 survey¹ conducted by Samsung with 1,443 participants across five countries, the most preferred AI appliance experience was “easier and more natural voice control” (32%) followed by “integrated touchscreens on appliances” (30%).

Samsung first introduced a 21.5-inch screen on its Family Hub refrigerator in 2016. Since then, the company has incorporated a variety of screen sizes — including 4.3-inch, 7-inch and 32-inch displays — across its home appliance lineup. Samsung further broadened the scope this year to include both combined and standalone washers and dryers, as well as induction cooktops. Notably, a 9-inch screen has been added to the refrigerator lineup for the first time — offering consumers even more choice.

How have screen-equipped appliances changed users’ daily lives? Samsung Newsroom highlights five ways Samsung’s Bespoke AI screen-equipped appliances help users get more out of their homes.

1. Personalized Information at a Glance With Daily Board

The dashboard-style Daily Board² allows users to easily view personalized information right from the kitchen. Introduced for the first time this year, the feature is available on various screen-equipped refrigerators including Samsung’s new refrigerator with 9-inch AI Home screen.

As users head to the kitchen for a glass of water in the morning, they can check the weather, view their schedule and even get recipe suggestions using ingredients stored inside the fridge — all from the screen. For a personal touch, they can also leave notes for family members.

The upgraded AI voice assistant Bixby³ recognizes individual voices and offers tailored support from displaying schedules to helping users find their smartphones.⁴

2. From Recipe to Oven: Orchestrating Meals With Ease

Samsung’s screens go beyond controlling individual home appliances — they enhance the entire home experience through seamless device connectivity.

AI Vision Inside⁵ now recognizes up to 37 types of fresh ingredients stored in the refrigerator and automatically creates a food list on the screen. The newly introduced AI Food Manager can also recommend up to 50 frequently used processed or packaged items based on usage patterns.⁶ From the screen, users can receive personalized recipe suggestions tailored to available ingredients. These recipes can then be sent to connected cooking appliances — such as ovens and induction cooktops — via SmartThings, making meal preparation smooth and convenient.

3. Control the Entire Smart Home From One Screen

With the Map View feature, users can monitor and control all their connected home appliances from a single screen.⁷ Everything can be managed remotely, from adjusting modes and changing temperatures to managing other key settings. Whether in the kitchen or living room, users can answer phone calls, monitor visitors or unlock doors — all through the screen.

Notably, this year’s new models⁸ feature upgraded screens that go beyond basic control — now, they serve as smart home hubs capable of connecting to and managing a wide range of devices. In addition to Wi-Fi, the appliances support Zigbee, Matter and Thread for more compatibility with various smart home and Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystems.⁹

4. Just a Simple Tap To Enjoy Home Entertainment

Samsung’s AI appliances make it easy to enjoy entertainment — either by mirroring content from a smartphone or directly accessing the internet or apps like YouTube and Spotify from the screen. For example, users can cook while watching a mirrored video on the refrigerator screen or use the washing machine’s screen to search YouTube for laundry tips and set the appropriate wash mode.

5. Energy Use Monitoring and Smart Maintenance Tips

One of the biggest advantages of Samsung’s large screens is their ability to intuitively visualize and manage energy consumption and maintenance tasks.

With SmartThings Energy, users can track energy use and reduce consumption through AI Energy Mode. They can also access the Optimal Scheduling feature¹⁰ that suggests ideal times to run appliances based on periods of high carbon emissions. After each wash or dry cycle, the screen displays a graph that breaks down the time spent and energy used.

To extend the appliance’s lifespan and ensure safety, the screen regularly checks device status and notifies users when filters need changing or cleaning. Bixby can even visually and audibly provide maintenance instructions on the screen when users ask.¹¹

Under its “Screens Everywhere” vision, Samsung continues to expand its lineup of screen-equipped appliances — designed to understand and support users’ daily lives. The highlight of this update is the integration of SmartThings with Samsung Health, designed to improve users’ sleep environments while enabling more personalized automation experiences. The update also expands Calm Onboarding to support a wider range of devices and adds compatibility with the Matter 1.4 standard.

Smarter Sleep Environments With Samsung Health Integration

Sleep environment reports¹ from Samsung Health on Galaxy devices help users create optimal conditions for rest by providing detailed insights into key factors — such as temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide levels and light intensity — through connected devices and sensors. These reports summarize the previous night’s sleep conditions and offer personalized suggestions for improvement.

When paired with a Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Ring, the latest update enables SmartThings to automatically adjust the environment based on the user’s actual sleep and wake times.² For example, routines can be set to turn off lights and the TV at bedtime or to open curtains and play music in the morning.

Greater Flexibility With SmartThings Routines

With the latest update, SmartThings now supports automation routines based on recurring schedules — weekly, monthly or annual — offering added flexibility for a variety of scenarios. For instance, users can automatically change the color of smart lights to celebrate special occasions like family birthdays.

In addition, SmartThings routines now integrate with Samsung TV Plus on 2025 Samsung TV models. This allows users to include entertainment preferences in their smart home routines — whether it’s setting the TV to turn on the news in the morning or switching to a favorite channel at a preset time to ensure they don’t miss a show.

Broadcasting via SmartThings-Connected Speakers

A new broadcasting feature allows users to send voice messages across SmartThings-connected speakers, making in-home communication more convenient. For example, if a parent is away and sends a voice message through the SmartThings app — “I’ll be home soon, but have a snack from the fridge if you’re hungry” — it will automatically play on the designated home speaker. With real-time message delivery, families can stay connected no matter where they are.

Expanding Calm Onboarding to More Devices

Samsung has offered the Calm Onboarding³ feature since late 2023, streamlining setup for Samsung home appliances purchased through Samsung.com or official Samsung stores by linking the entire product journey — from order and delivery to connection with the SmartThings app.

In the latest SmartThings update, Samsung is expanding Calm Onboarding beyond its own products to include compatible third-party smart home devices for a more seamless and intuitive connectivity experience. Users who purchase SmartThings-compatible smart home devices directly from Samsung.com will now receive purchase and delivery updates within the SmartThings app. Additionally, users will receive step-by-step onboarding instructions to simplify product setup. The rollout will begin in Korea, with plans to expand to other countries.⁴

Matter 1.4 Support

SmartThings continues to advance the IoT landscape by expanding its support for Matter 1.4. The latest version of the standard includes a wide range of energy management devices — such as water heater, heat pump, solar power device, battery storage device, mounted on/off control switch and mounted dimmable load control device. These newly supported device categories build on existing popular device types like lights, thermostats, switches, air conditioners, air purifiers, fans, door locks and more.

By integrating AI-powered routines, broadening device compatibility and adopting the latest Matter standard, SmartThings reinforces its ongoing commitment to innovation — making the connected home more intelligent, energy-efficient and seamless for users and their families.

According to an online survey by Samsung Electronics, consumers worldwide seek personalized AI-powered home solutions that streamline household chores with minimal time and effort.

From May 23 to 28, 2024, Samsung conducted an independent online survey with 1,880 participants aged 20 to 59 across South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States. The multiple-response survey targeted primary home appliance users and key purchasing decision-makers, gathering insights into perceptions of AI and the outlook for AI home appliances.

When asked about the expected role of AI in the home, respondents frequently mentioned “help / helpful / assist” (379 responses), “cleaning” (259), “cooking” (181), “automatic” (178) and “easy / easier” (144).

Expectations for AI within Households

Moreover, some respondents highlighted security and safety as key expectations — anticipating that AI home appliances will not only reduce household burdens based on individual needs but also manage home safety.

Samsung Newsroom examines how the company continues to refine its AI Home experience by leveraging AI and connectivity to help consumers effortlessly manage daily tasks while ensuring robust security.

An Intuitive and Connected AI Home Experience

The survey revealed a strong demand for simple, intuitive controls in home appliances.

When asked about AI interaction preferences, respondents most frequently mentioned “voice / tell / talk” (203 responses) — followed by “help / helpful / assist” (175), “convenient / comfort” (155) and “control” (128).

Expectations for AI Interactions in Home Appliances

Samsung’s AI home appliances maximize ease of use through the advanced AI-powered Bixby voice assistant and seamless device connectivity via built-in screens. With Bixby’s ability to analyze context, understand intent and remember conversations, users can easily control their appliances.

This year, Bixby has been integrated into the Bespoke AI Dishwasher¹ for the first time. Additionally, the 2025 Bespoke AI Hybrid Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+ and the latest washers and dryers will feature voice recognition to provide personalized information tailored to each family member.²

These innovative screen-equipped appliances offer effortless control and seamless access to information.

The Bespoke AI Hybrid Refrigerator with Kitchen Fit,³ featuring a 9-inch AI Home screen, displays a Daily Board that summarizes personalized information such as weather forecasts, daily schedules and meal recommendations.

Meanwhile, the 7-inch AI Home screen on the 2025 Bespoke AI Laundry Combo⁴ serves as a built-in hub — allowing users to manage SmartThings-connected home appliances and IoT devices without a separate hub.⁵

AI Home Appliances Must Do More With Less

Many respondents expressed strong interest in conserving resources. When asked about the most relevant AI-driven experiences, “minimizing resource usage” ranked highly among respondents in the U.S. (67%), U.K. (59%) and South Korea (49%).⁶

Samsung’s latest AI home appliances enhance performance and energy efficiency by combining advanced hardware, AI and SmartThings.

The new Bespoke AI Laundry Combo reduces drying time by approximately 20 minutes compared to its predecessor, completing a wash and dry cycle in just 79 minutes⁷ using Super Speed cycle. Meanwhile, the Bespoke AI Hybrid Refrigerator optimizes cooling efficiency and energy savings by using a compressor and Peltier module⁸ to deliver rapid cooling while maximizing energy efficiency.

Enhancing Home Security and Safety With AI

Respondents expect AI-driven security features to protect their homes and ensure their families’ safety. “Security / safe” was frequently mentioned as a key factor in interactions with AI home appliances.

To address these concerns, Samsung equips all its smart appliances with the proprietary Samsung Knox⁹ security solution to safeguard user data from external threats such as malware.

This year, the company is expanding Knox Matrix¹⁰ — its blockchain-based security system that enables connected appliances to monitor each other’s security status — to appliances with 7- and 9-inch screens as well as the latest robot vacuum cleaner.

The Knox Matrix Dashboard will be introduced to Samsung’s 2025 home appliance lineup,¹¹ allowing users to monitor the security status of all connected devices and receive alerts for potential security issues.

Furthermore, Samsung is integrating Knox Vault into its screen-equipped home appliances and robot vacuum cleaners this year.¹² This system securely stores sensitive user data — such as passwords and biometric information — on a dedicated hardware security chip, protecting against data breaches and hacking attempts while reinforcing security.

Passkey will be introduced to screen-equipped home appliances that support browsers, helping users replace traditional passwords with biometric authentication — such as fingerprint or facial recognition — via their smartphones for more secure and convenient logins.¹³

2016–2018: Introducing the World’s First WindFree Cooling

In January 2016, Samsung launched the world’s first WindFree air conditioner. Powered by patented technology, the first-generation WindFree air conditioner rapidly lowered indoor temperatures using three powerful air outlets and evenly dispersed the cool air through thousands of micro air holes when the air outlets closed to maintain a consistent and comfortable indoor temperature. This breakthrough cooling method was made possible through Samsung’s extensive R&D efforts and 11 global patents.

In 2017, Samsung expanded its WindFree lineup by introducing the first-ever wall-mounted WindFree air conditioner — building on the successful launch of the floor-standing model.

By 2018, Samsung integrated AI technology into WindFree cooling. AI Auto Cooling mode analyzed indoor and outdoor conditions along with user preferences to automatically adjust cooling, dehumidification and air purification settings for personalized comfort. Meanwhile, AI Purification mode activated air purification based on the concentration of fine dust. Furthermore, Bixby voice control enabled seamless operation of air conditioners as well as other SmartThings-connected appliances.

2019–2022: Elevating Comfort With Wide WindFree Cooling

The year 2019 marked the introduction of the second-generation WindFree air conditioner, boasting enhanced cooling performance and design. The air outlets were concealed within the front panel, creating a minimalist design that blended seamlessly with any interior. Samsung’s upgraded Wide WindFree technology delivered a richer, more powerful and evenly distributed cooling experience by improving airflow through a widened WindFree panel and over 270,000 micro air holes — more than double the previous model.

In 2020, Samsung introduced Easy Care to allow effortless cleaning and maintenance. The Easy Open Panel enabled quick disassembly without tools, while the Wash Clean feature facilitated heat exchanger cleaning for better hygiene and maintenance convenience.

By 2022, Samsung’s WindFree technology evolved beyond cooling to introduce Warm Breeze. By gently emitting air at 86-104°F (30-40°C), the feature ensured a cozy indoor environment while simultaneously purifying the air to significantly increase the versatility of WindFree air conditioners for year-round use.

2023–2024: Redefining Cooling With 3D Wide WindFree

The third-generation WindFree air conditioner, launched in 2023, represented another leap forward in design and performance. Samsung introduced a premium 3D silhouette design, crafted using advanced 3D metal press technology. This element added a new level of sophistication and texture to the exterior. Compared to the previous model, the air conditioner featured 1,500 additional micro air holes for an improved WindFree cooling experience.

In 2024, Samsung upgraded user convenience by integrating Bixby voice control into many more functions — from simple mode and temperature adjustments to complex multi-step commands and scheduling.

2025: Unlocking the Future of Air Conditioning With the WindFree Combo

This year, Samsung has once again taken its air conditioner innovation to the next level with the launch of the WindFree Combo. The new Dry Comfort feature uses a temperature and humidity sensor to calculate the temperature of the heat exchanger, precisely adjusting refrigerant flow and moderating humidity levels. What’s more, the dehumidification feature reduces energy consumption by up to 30% compared to the previous model.

The AI-driven smart features have evolved to offer personalized climate control optimized for users’ living spaces. AI algorithms learn users’ movement patterns and analyze weather conditions, indoor and outdoor temperatures and humidity to ensure ideal comfort. Moreover, the WindFree Air Conditioner now connects with Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Ring, automatically activating WindFree Wearable Good Sleep mode when it detects the user falling asleep and turning off the cooling when they wake up.¹

From enhanced cooling performance and innovative design to greater user convenience, WindFree air conditioners continue to set new standards in home climate control. As Samsung’s air-conditioning technology advances, more paradigm-shifting breakthroughs will emerge to further improve comfort in everyday living.

Samsung Electronics today announced that, in collaboration with the Carbon Trust and other major tech companies, it has launched a new methodology for measuring the emissions and reductions linked to the use-phase of internet-connected electronic devices.

The launch of this methodology is part of Samsung’s participation in the Decarbonizing the Use-Phase of Connected Devices (DUCD) initiative, through which the company has teamed up with the Carbon Trust, Amazon, Microsoft and Sky to tackle the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from use-phase electricity consumption of internet-connected electrical and electronic products.

These organizations are focusing on the use-phase in particular because it is typically the largest source of product’s carbon emissions throughout its entire lifetime. Globally, connected devices currently require approximately 500 terawatt-hours (TWh) of energy annually — similar to France’s total energy use. Therefore, understanding and accounting for products’ carbon impact and finding ways to drive down emissions while devices are being used is a priority for the tech industry.

This new methodology sets out how companies can assess and report emissions using data drawn from devices that are being used by their customers, enhancing the accuracy of reporting that has until now relied upon lifetime forecasts used in current emissions accounting. Tech firms will also be able to account for emissions reductions that have been achieved in the process of using the methodology.

The annual reporting of use-phase emissions and reporting of emissions reductions will lead to increased transparency in communication to consumers, incentivizing companies to make reductions while products are still being used. The standardization and accuracy of the data will also guide companies to identify innovative solutions to further reduce the carbon impact of their devices.

Samsung’s contributions to launching the new DUCD methodology are a continuation of the company’s commitment to finding new ways to save energy. This type of innovation is exemplified by SmartThings Energy, which empowers users to track their energy usage and make better energy decisions, as well as AI Energy Mode, which considers usage patterns and electricity rates to help users better manage energy usage.

Exploring Samsung’s AI Roadmap at Tech Session

Tech Session at SDC24 became a platform for Samsung executives and employees to present the current state and future vision of Samsung’s AI innovations. This year, Tech Session was divided into five themes — Device AI, SmartThings, Responsible AI, Advanced Tech and Enterprise & Ecosystem. Each theme highlighted AI innovations spanning the entire product line including Galaxy AI, AI TVs and Bespoke AI appliances as well as the platforms that power these AI products. Discussions also touched on establishing a blueprint for enhanced security technologies.

Among the innovations discussed that captivated attendees were the AI capabilities of Samsung TVs, which have been refined to more accurately recognize users and contexts for optimal viewing. Also on the agenda were Bespoke AI appliances equipped with Bixby to upgrade the smart home experience. .

Additionally, the Samsung Health SDK Suite offered a glimpse into the future of digital health with its potential to transform the healthcare ecosystem.

Transforming AI-Driven Communication and Exchange at Open Stage

SDC24 featured diverse programs designed to foster communication and interaction among developers including Open Stage, where various external speakers shared their knowledge and industry expertise; a Q&A session with Tech Session speakers; and the Roundtable, discussion sessions for attendees to explore the exhibits and exchange ideas.

Developer Tiffany Janzen, the founder of TiffinTech, spoke about the future of everyday life shaped by the convergence of AI and IoT during Open Stage. Meanwhile, Q&A session attendees participated in lively discussions and shared valuable insights.

Experiencing AI-Powered Software Solutions at Tech Square

Tech Square, an exhibition space showcasing Samsung’s latest innovations, provided participants with a firsthand look at the company’s cutting-edge software and AI-based services.

Developers lined up to explore the latest AI features integrated into TVs, home appliances and more. The Generative Wallpaper feature on Samsung TVs as well as the Bespoke AI Family Hub in particular garnered a large amount of attention from developers.

Celebrating its 10^th anniversary, SmartThings evolved with AI to launch Home Insight and expand SmartThings Hub to a wider range of products.

HARMAN, a Samsung subsidiary, made an appearance at the event as well. The company introduced technology aimed at helping developers enter the automotive app market and demonstrated its Ignite platform, offering a variety of in-vehicle experiences including automotive apps.

Expanding Samsung’s Software Ecosystem With Partners

Partner companies leading software and device innovation were also present at Tech Square. The Partnership Zone provided a comprehensive overview of their devices and solutions within the SmartThings and Samsung Health ecosystem. Attendees experienced different real-life scenarios with treadmills, blood pressure monitors, smart body scales and more for an up-close look at the future of personalized healthcare at home through the seamless integration of Samsung Health and SmartThings.

Additionally, Samsung Wallet saw further advancements through collaborations with various partners, including smart key companies. For instance, the door lock functionality of SmartThings has been integrated into Samsung Wallet as a digital home key for improved convenience and usability. From mobile payment to storing digital IDs and event tickets, most of Samsung Wallet’s existing features were developed and launched in close collaboration with partner companies.

Diving Into Samsung’s Software at Code Lab

Featuring a total of 13 coding programs, Code Lab provided developers with hands-on coding experiences covering topics such as health, SmartThings, Samsung Wallet and automotive apps. After selecting their areas of interest, developers solved various software challenges under a time limit for an engaging and interactive experience.

Samsung Electronics today held its annual Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center. Celebrating a decade of collaboration and innovation with developers, the company shared its vision for providing a more personalized and secure experience with the latest multi-device AI technology in the spirit of “AI for All.”

With about 3,000 developers, partners and media in attendance, Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman, CEO and Head of Device eXperience (DX) Division at Samsung Electronics said, “We have continued our journey of innovation with our many developers and partners for the last ten years,” highlighting the importance of open collaboration to strengthen both competitiveness and mutual growth in today’s AI era.

JH shared further detail surrounding the company’s commitment to using AI technology to offer stronger security, advanced personalization, better family care experiences and new opportunities for B2B businesses. “Samsung Electronics will continue advancing AI technology to a level where AI automatically recognizes each user individually — from their voice to their location — to provide a more personalized experience,” he explained. “These efforts will create more convenient and secure multi-device experiences by leveraging Samsung’s AI-based software, platform innovation and security technology.”

In addition, the company announced that it will integrate the software experience of its major product lines — from mobile devices to TVs and home appliances — under the name One UI next year. By providing a cohesive product experience and committing to software upgrades for up to seven years, Samsung will continue to bring innovation for its customers.

To realize its AI for All vision, Samsung will also create AI for good, empowering innovators to leverage new technologies to break new ground, address societal challenges head-on and create a better world for future generations.

Samsung Reiterates AI for All Innovation

At SDC24, the company reiterated its commitment to use AI technology to open possibilities, protect personal information and enhance the daily lives of all who use it. Building on over a decade of investment into advanced intelligence technologies, Samsung shared how its commitment to AI for All is guiding the company’s research and innovation roadmap for developers and customers alike.

Inspired by the need to create AI rooted in personalization for every individual, Samsung’s AI is made for all; it’s for families who want to make managing their evening routines easier, homeowners who are getting used to new spaces, and creators and innovators exploring cutting-edge technologies for inspiration. Samsung is providing AI for All without compromising privacy by leveraging on-device AI capabilities, while continuing to offer game-changing performance through cloud and generative AI.

Samsung is also committed to developing AI to better our world, as all employees uphold the global AI ethics principles of “Fairness,” “Transparency” and “Accountability” for both developing and using AI.

The AI for All strategy will more closely integrate Galaxy AI on mobile devices to enhance productivity, creativity and communication; Bespoke AI appliances to simplify users’ daily life; AI-powered displays on Samsung smart TVs with Tizen; and cross-platform AI enhancements coming to Bixby, SmartThings and One UI 7.

A Sneak Peek at One UI 7

One UI has always been designed to bring users the most personalized, creative and productive experiences possible on mobile devices. Samsung previewed a sneak peek of One UI 7 at SDC24, highlighting its new UX focused on simple, impactful and emotive design alongside more ways to seamlessly integrate Galaxy AI features into daily activities. One UI 7 beta will be available to developers before the end of this year.

The AI Home Comes to Life

Samsung’s Bespoke AI appliances are bringing better experiences to the entire household, from the kitchen to the living room. With AI Vision Inside¹ in the refrigerator with AI Family Hub or AI-applied features like AI Floor Detect in the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI, Samsung’s smart home appliances leverage the best of AI technology to make lives better, simpler and easier than ever.

That capability grows even stronger with the AI-upgraded Bixby.² Users can control their entire smart home from anywhere within earshot of a Bixby-enabled appliance. Bixby also provides accessibility benefits for users. For increased accessibility at home, it can open appliance doors with a simple call, without wake-up commands³ thanks to the Auto Open Door.

Bixby’s enhanced capabilities extend to Samsung smart TVs, as well. Users can now search for content using only descriptive details and customizing settings with multiple commands, thanks to Bixby. Inspired by a continued commitment to simplifying the lives of everyday users, the mobile remote control feature enables users to control their TV from their phone and Samsung AI Cast can send AI-generated results from mobile devices to the TV. Available from the TV home screen, users can enjoy images and content lists developed with generative AI, including an integration with ChatGPT, now on a bigger display.

Samsung is integrating AI across its visual display applications too, from AI Upscaling and AI Customization on smart TVs to offering a new Daily Board Software Development Kit (SDK) for developers to turn any smart TV screen into a one-stop-shop for daily information like weather, device health and local updates through a new partnership with Nextdoor.

Next-Generation Signage Solutions With VXT

Samsung also showcased the next generation of signage solutions with Visual Experience Transformation (VXT), its software platform and accompanying content management solution (CMS) for content production, operation and management. By using an AI-powered chatbot with the Pre-Integrated Repeatable Solution (PIRS) & Widget aNd Extension (WiNE) Framework, VXT offers efficient, streamlined signage solutions and allows developers to seamlessly integrate solutions and simplify processes on the platform.

Tizen Leverages On-Device AI for World-Class Performance

Samsung’s major OS Tizen is bringing its industry-leading experience to more devices and services, as Samsung has equipped certain AI-enabled home appliances with the AI Home,⁴ a 7-inch LCD touchscreen display.

Tizen is also getting a boost with Tizen AI services. Powered by the Samsung Neural Processing Unit (NPU) and optimized to suit Samsung products and respond to user needs, Tizen AI services will provide smarter, safer and more personalized experiences, from controlling echo and noise levels while watching TV or making video calls to analyzing users’ writing styles to improve notetaking.

Samsung’s commitment to enhancing experiences with AI is also reflected by stronger interoperability between Tizen and the Galaxy ecosystem. Multi-Control, which enables users to navigate and control both their smartphone and tablet using the same Bluetooth tools including mice and keyboards, will extend to smart monitors and TVs with Tizen.

Samsung has developed Tizen based on RISC-V⁵ for developers, and a new SDK for Tizen applications designed with RISC-V will be available in 2026.

Tizen also supports the latest version of Flutter, the cross-platform development framework, and will continue providing extension tools for app developers for a greater level of debugging and profiling.

SmartThings Takes New Leap Forward With AI and Expands to Health Experience

Over the past decade, Samsung SmartThings has grown into one of the largest connected platforms with more than 350 million subscribers and over 340 “Works with SmartThings” (WWST) partners.

Samsung is using advanced AI technology to unlock higher-level SmartThings experiences and explore a wider range of partnerships. SmartThings will play a key role as the groundbreaking technology that sets the company’s products and services apart.

One of the major updates coming to SmartThings this month is Home Insight,⁶ which analyzes user data, usage patterns, device history and home stats collected in real time to offer a better home experience. It also recommends features to optimize the home, such as powering off idle devices while away during a specific time of day or season. Plus, the Galaxy Tab S10 is equipped with the Home Insight Widget, so it can be conveniently used as a home dashboard to monitor and control the house.

Samsung also introduced its plan to have all its products with screens run the SmartThings Hub. This will make Samsung devices better at working together to take care of the home, and even includes connectivity with partner devices. The plan includes adding Edge AI⁷ technology based on the SmartThings Hub, which embeds AI capabilities in the home’s connected devices, contributing to the vision of a truly AI-enhanced home.

In the spirit of open collaboration and innovation, Samsung shared the details of its latest SmartThings partnerships. This included a new partnership with various smart key developers, including Schlage⁸ and Aqara,⁹ which will add the SmartThings Door Lock function to the Digital Home Key inside Samsung Wallet in 2025.

Sustainability was also highlighted, particularly a partnership between SmartThings and Kohler.¹⁰ Kohler’s Chief Sustainable Living Officer (U.S.) Laura Kohler joined Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings, onstage to share how the new integration will help users monitor and reduce water usage with smart showerheads and faucets.

Tobin Richardson, Head of the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), virtually announced that Samsung SmartThings was the first service to adopt the Matter¹¹ 1.3 standard, playing a crucial role in the continued support and expansion of the Matter ecosystem.

Samsung also introduced a closer integration between SmartThings and Samsung Health. Girish Naganathan, CTO of the continuous glucose monitoring system (CGM) company Dexcom,¹² joined Samsung onstage to discuss the companies’ shared vision of more personalized, convenient health management at home, for both users and their loved ones.

Security as the Foundation for the AI Era

Finally, Samsung continued to highlight its commitment to robust security and privacy standards. With Samsung Knox, the company is continuing to invest in strengthening its security governance to ensure that the latest AI experiences never require the sacrificing of personal data. The blockchain-based, multi-device security solution Knox Matrix will expand from mobile devices to TVs and home appliances to further enhance security across multi-device experiences.

Samsung also highlighted the expansion of Passkey, which will come to Tizen beginning with 2025 TV models, the refrigerator with AI Family Hub and home appliances with AI Home. Passkey will bring greater convenience and security to users, while also supporting web browser-based logins through mobile QR code scanning.

Samsung Electronics today announced the signing of a strategic technology partnership agreement with Hyundai Motor and Kia. The companies’ shared goal is to elevate users’ connectivity experiences by fully integrating the SmartThings IoT platform with Hyundai and Kia’s software-defined vehicles (SDVs).

The signing ceremony was held at Samsung Electronics’ Seoul R&D Campus, with Samsung’s participants including Paul (Kyungwhoon) Cheun, President, CTO of Device eXperience (DX) Division and Head of Samsung Research; Seungbeom Choi, Executive Vice President and Head of Device Platform Center; and Chanwoo Park, Executive Vice President and Head of IoT R&D Team. Participants from Hyundai and Kia included Chang Song, President and Head of Hyundai Motor Group Advanced Vehicle Platform (AVP) Division and Haeyoung Kwon, Vice President and Head of Hyundai Motor Group Infotainment Development Center.

Through this agreement, Samsung will integrate SmartThings with Hyundai and Kia’s next-generation infotainment system to offer a differentiated experience. First, they will introduce the global location solution function for vehicles and smart keys based on the SmartThings Find platform, which is a crowdsourced network of hundreds of millions of Samsung Galaxy devices that use the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology to report their location. Through the SmartThings Find service, users can locate vehicles using nearby Galaxy smartphones — even without a 4G or 5G cellular network connection — meaning drivers can more easily track down their cars in the event of them being lost or stolen.

Additionally, drivers can use their Galaxy’s Quick Panel to control air conditioning and check their remaining range from their device. Vehicles can also be added to the connected SmartThings ecosystem, allowing users to return to a home with optimized conditions by controlling their Samsung air conditioners, air purifiers or other connected devices while driving home.

As part of the agreement, Samsung will also continue collaborating with Hyundai and Kia to provide various AI-based services tailored to customer lifestyles and preferences. The companies will expand the use of SmartThings to include in-vehicle health monitoring via cameras and Galaxy devices, pet care solutions that optimize vehicle environments for pets, as well as integration with smart apartment solutions and SDVs.

Consistent Steps Forward Enable Shared Progress

In January this year, Samsung and Hyundai announced to partnership focusing on home-to-car and car-to-home services that connect smartphones, vehicles and home appliances. Based on this agreement, the two organizations have been working toward a reality in which a Samsung device can be used to seamlessly control a Hyundai or Kia vehicle — and home appliances can also be easily controlled from inside the vehicle.

Samsung SmartThings began as Samsung Electronics’ Internet of Things (IoT) platform, connecting not only Samsung products but also a wide array of devices from partner companies. This integration has evolved into a seamless, connected experience tailored to fit diverse lifestyles.

Growing from 100 million subscribers in 2019 to over 350 million by August 2024, SmartThings has established Samsung as a leader in the smart home market. The platform continues to expand its influence in the IoT industry by enhancing its AI-driven capabilities and even extending its reach into the B2B space.

In the midst of this change, Samsung has positioned itself to lead the next 100 years of innovation by seamlessly connecting mobile devices, TVs and home appliances through SmartThings¹ — while offering enhanced control over devices through upgrades in Bixby,² the company’s voice assistant which can now better understand complex commands based on natural language.

IFA 2024 kicks off on September 6 under the slogan “Innovation for All.” Before its grand opening, Samsung Newsroom looked back at IFA’s century-long journey of innovation and Samsung’s legacy of technological breakthroughs.

From Radio Exhibition to Innovation Hub for AI Devices

In its early days, IFA served as a platform for the German government to showcase emerging radio technology in the 1920s. Albert Einstein even delivered the opening speech in 1930.

This marked the beginning of a series of breakthroughs including the introduction of the world’s first car radio in 1932 and the first color TV in 1937. World War II halted IFA for several years in the 1940s, but technological progress continued. In 1971, the show was renamed Internationale Funkausstellung to become the IFA consumers know today.

The evolution of home appliances has been equally remarkable. Refrigerators and washing machines are no longer simple mechanical devices designed to reduce household labor. Innovations in compressors and motors — along with advancements in electronic components, smart features and connectivity — have turned these devices into sophisticated, high-tech tools for modern living.

Samsung first started exhibiting at IFA in 1991, showcasing monitors, PCs and more at a modest 43-square-meter booth during the trade show’s expansion beyond radio and television to include digital media devices. Twelve years later in 2003, the company upgraded its booth to a significantly larger 3,600-square-meter one in the prime location of Hall 20. Since 2014, Samsung has exclusively occupied CityCube Berlin and is ready to impress visitors once again with its 6,000-square-meter booth this year.

Growing With IFA and Leading the AI Era With a Connected Ecosystem

Samsung’s presence at IFA has continually increased as the company introduced groundbreaking technologies across home appliances, TVs and mobile devices. In 2006, the tech giant showcased the Bordeaux TV, which established Samsung as the global TV market leader. In 2011, the company introduced the industry’s first smart TV and the Galaxy Note — the latter of which heralded the “phablet era” by blurring the line between smartphones and tablets.

Samsung unveiled the world’s first curved UHD TV and the company’s first smartwatch, the Galaxy Gear, at IFA 2013. Three years later in 2016, the launch of the Family Hub refrigerator with a large touchscreen marked the transition of home appliances into advanced Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

In 2014, Samsung had recognized the potential for connected experiences to revolutionize consumers’ lives and acquired SmartThings just a month before IFA 2014. Today, SmartThings has since grown over a decade into a massive, global ecosystem of more than 340 partners and 350 million users.³

At IFA 2018, Samsung highlighted AI as a key focus, signaling that “connected living” would become a major trend in the electronics industry. The company proceeded to introduce 15 AI-powered appliances at IFA 2023, ushering in the AI era of home appliances. Last year, Samsung also introduced Samsung Food — an AI-powered food and recipe platform that connects home appliances, TVs and mobile devices to deliver a personalized cooking experience tailored to each household and individual.

Samsung’s journey with IFA is now headed toward innovations in device control through more advanced voice commands. Basic machines designed to store food and wash clothes 100 years ago are now evolving into intelligent companions that communicate with users verbally and handle complex household tasks with ease.⁴

This transformation will be showcased at Samsung’s booth in CityCube Berlin at Messe Berlin during IFA 2024 from September 6-10.

Samsung Electronics today announced that an expanded number of products in its Digital Appliances Business have been verified to level ‘Diamond’ under UL Solutions’ Marketing Claim Verification IoT Security Rating Program. Following the Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+¹ ― which was the first product in the home appliances industry to earn the ‘Diamond’ level from UL Solutions ― and Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI,² three products were verified to the same level recently. The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo³ and the Air to Water Heat Pump⁴ acquired the Verification in June, and the Bespoke Slide-in Range⁵ followed in July. As a result, Samsung now possesses five ‘Diamond’ level verifications by UL Solutions, the largest number in the home appliances industry.

UL Solutions’ IoT Security Rating Program

UL Solutions is a leading global safety science company that evaluates hundreds of marketing claims each year. One of their services, the UL Solutions’ IoT Security Rating Program, verifies the security capabilities of smart home products.

UL Solutions differentiates security capability performance using five levels – Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond. Each level requires rigorous testing, and of them, the highest ‘Diamond’ level is only given after products pass tests evaluating the ability to detect malicious software modulation, prevent illegal access attempts and anonymize user data. Especially, the products that achieve this highest ‘Diamond’ level differentiate themselves from level ‘Platinum’ products in their ability to detect unknown potential vulnerabilities and operate programs for early detection of security vulnerabilities, as well.

Products Newly Verified to Level ‘Diamond’

These additional certifications were obtained for the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, the Air to Water Heat Pump and the Bespoke Slide-in Range. They are distinctive by being able to be linked with other devices using SmartThings connectivity⁶ and providing various AI or smart functions.

The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo is an All-in-one washer and dryer that frees users from the hassle of transferring laundry after washing to the dryer. Featuring a 7-inch LCD display,⁷ users can get recommended cycles⁸ based on their preferences, as well as periodic and seasonal needs.⁹ It also shows all connected appliances¹⁰ within the home, allowing users to monitor and control them seamlessly.

The Air to Water Heat Pump has a slim fit design that goes harmoniously with the home environment. Its 7-inch LCD display¹¹ supports various languages and helps users monitor solar PV energy usage. Users can control their connected appliances through the display.

Lastly, the Bespoke Slide-in Range also features the 7-inch LCD display¹² for an elevated cooking experience. Users can access connected appliances¹³ with Bixby¹⁴ through a microphone and a speaker implemented in the range. Moreover, it analyzes users’ preference data and provides personalized guidance, notifications and recipe recommendations.¹⁵

Thanks to Samsung Knox, which is applied to all Samsung home appliances, the data and the connection between devices can be thoroughly protected. Customers can utilize products’ AI features with confidence, having been assured of their strong security performance.

Samsung Electronics, today announced that SmartThings, its global connected living platform, has received the international standard ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification for information security management systems (ISMSs).

ISO 27001 is the leading global standard for ISMSs and was established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The standard provides companies with guidance to manage the risks to information assets systematically and achieve information protection goals.

This certification was received from the British Standards Institution (BSI), a world-renowned standardization and certification organization. To be certified, a company has to meet the standard across a total of 123 detailed items, including policies for information security, access control for information assets and incident response, among others.

With this certification, Samsung has proven that the information protection of its SmartThings Cloud operates in accordance with international standards while providing integrated connected experiences. This official recognition will further boost trust and strengthen business competitiveness — not only with SmartThings users but also partners.

At EuroCucina 2024, Samsung set up several experience zones dedicated to various appliances and their features. The Built-In Kitchen Zone attracted attention from visitors as the area displayed premium built-in products catered to the European market.

Samsung Electronics announced the showcase of its new premium kitchen and lifestyle as part of a continued drive for a connected home life at EuroCucina 2024. The event, held in Milan, is one of the largest international kitchen events and will take place from April 16 to 21 at Rho Fiera Milano. Samsung will use the event to display how connectivity among multiple appliances — as well as the innovative features of new built-in products — will change everyday home life.

“I’m excited to show attendees what we’ve created at EuroCucina, following the ‘Welcome to BESPOKE AI’ global launch event two weeks ago,” said Moohyung Lee, EVP and Head of the Customer Experience Team, Digital Appliances (DA) Business at Samsung Electronics. “We believe that connectivity between appliances will elevate consumers’ lives to a new level. Moreover, we also want customers to find the diverse features of new built-in products helpful to their daily life. I hope visitors at the booth enjoy these new changes Samsung brings to EuroCucina.”

Samsung’s booth at EuroCucina invites visitors to main zones which consist of the Bespoke AI¹ and Premium Built-In Kitchen. Especially at the Premium Built-In Kitchen zone, Samsung plans to unveil three new built-in products which fit European lifestyles and are packed with new innovative features.

The Expansion of Connectivity Across Appliances

The journey at Samsung’s booth starts with the Bespoke AI² zone which demonstrates the expansion of connectivity.³ It includes the experience of connectivity existing not only in the kitchen, but also in the rest of the home, assisting users’ life to be simple and intuitive, less user input required at home.

Samsung highlights the experience enhanced and realized by multiple screens. The AI Family Hub⁴ and AI Home⁵ — a 7-inch screen built into the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo and Anyplace Induction — are key components of this. Through the screens, users can get the useful information of the device itself or get a phone call directly on the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo while doing laundry. But the most important part is that the screens enable the appliances to connect with and control other devices, letting users enjoy heightened convenience through the SmartThings ecosystem.

For example, they feature SmartThings 3D Map View, a three-dimensional perspective of the home that locates connected Samsung appliances throughout the house. It streamlines operations such as turning off connected devices and checking their energy usage.

Various scenarios to the real life are ready at the zone as well. In a specific mode like SmartThings Energy Away mode, SmartThings automatically powers off the chosen, specific appliances and devices when users are out of home. Moreover, it also introduces energy saving solutions based on SmartThings Energy. With Optimal Charging, the robot vacuum cleaner only charges up to 60% during peak hours, while Optimal Scheduling automatically schedules the dishwasher’s cycle during off-peak hours.

The experience makes users do less while living with more possibilities. Through Calm Onboarding, Samsung users’ journey to the SmartThings ecosystem is more fluent from the beginning. When customers purchase the product using their Samsung account, SmartThings traces where the delivery is and automatically connects to it without user input when installed. Supported by Samsung Knox, the connected life experience is secured safely.

Built-In Products Cater to Diverse Lifestyles

In the European market, Samsung has further strengthened its brand position by launching built-in models including refrigerators, dishwashers, induction cooktops and ovens, as well as by introducing innovative features such as AI Pro Cooking. At the Premium Built-In Kitchen zone, Samsung showcases three new products that will assure its brand presence in the built-in market. They feature AI-applied capabilities and upgraded functionality and provide consumers with great flexibility when configuring their built-in kitchens.

First, the Built-in Wide Bottom Mount Freezer (BRB6500D) is the first wide model to appear in Samsung’s built-in refrigerator lineup. Using its Wi-Fi compatibility, users can reduce their energy use by up to 10%⁶ through SmartThings AI Energy Mode.⁷ Users can also monitor their energy usage and estimate monthly energy bills. If these bills exceed their preset targets, the energy saving mode can help users save energy⁸ by changing the compressor speed and the frequency of the defrost cycle. As for keeping food fresh, the Twin Cooling system ensures that food stays fresher for longer by changing the temperature and humidity in the refrigerator and freezer using independent evaporators and fans.

The Anyplace Induction, which was shown at the ‘Welcome to BESPOKE AI’ global launch event before, is displayed at the zone. As the name suggests, the Anyplace Induction enables users to cook flexibly anywhere on the cooktop. This flexibility is enabled by the 22 rectangular sheet coils that cover the cooktop extensively. It reduces dead zones and, therefore, makes up a larger cooking surface than a conventional Samsung 4 ring induction cooktop.⁹ Furthermore, Intelligent Pan Detection helps users place the pots and pans where they want. The induction uses 76 sensors to intelligently recognize pots and pans and show their locations on the AI Home display. This allows users to choose cooking areas and set temperatures according to what they are cooking. Beyond these functionalities, the Anyplace Induction also includes features such as Anti-Scratch Glass, which has a superior Mohs hardness rating of 8.¹⁰ With this level of hardness, the surface is less likely to get marked when users move cookware or clean it, making it long-lasting and easy to maintain. The product will be available in Europe from 2H 2024.

Samsung’s new Energy Efficient Dishwasher¹¹ also on display at EuroCucina 2024 is the latest model to bring high energy efficiency to dishwashing. Coming with A/B energy labels,¹² the dishwasher features a WaterJet Clean system that provides intensive cleaning from every angle, thereby improving energy efficiency. It operates at a noise level of just 41dB when the Extra Silence program is in use.¹³ Moreover, through SmartThings connectivity, users can save extra energy in real life. SmartThings AI Energy mode¹⁴ proactively monitors power consumption and predicts ongoing usage. Users can turn on the energy saving mode if the monthly electricity bill seems to exceed their target. Then, the dishwasher uses up to 23% less energy with the Pots & Pans program¹⁵ by reducing the temperature of the main wash and hot rinse while extending the cycle time. Lastly, the Kitchen Fit Sliding Door¹⁶ ensures that the dishwasher integrates harmoniously into modern kitchens. Thanks to a sliding hinge, the door can be opened fully without having to cut the plinth below, meaning the bottom line of the door seamlessly continues to kitchen cabinet doors.

Quality and Collaboration Now and Into the Future

Samsung is endeavoring to keep the quality of its products and to ensure better outcomes. As such, it has been developing technologies to bring this commitment to product features such as AI Ecobubble,¹⁷ reducing energy use of washing machines,¹⁸ and the Less Microfiber Filter and Cycle, reducing microplastics emissions in the water drained from washing machines.¹⁹

As a part of its continued actions, Samsung showcases its latest efforts to visitors at EuroCucina 2024. In particular, the company focused on collaborations utilizing SmartThings Energy. Samsung has actively participated in projects that aim to eventually create a Net Zero Home. SmartThings Energy integrates these projects to provide consolidated control and monitor home energy use. It can also synchronize to a program like Demand Response (DR),²⁰ by automatically adjusting connected appliances’ mode when the DR event is triggered. Samsung is committed to expanding its collaborations across the globe to help customers make progress on the path to an energy-efficient lifestyle.

Jong-Hee Han, Vice Chairman and CEO of the Device eXperience (DX) Division at Samsung Electronics, delivered the opening speech and emphasized that Bespoke AI embodies the company’s “AI for All” vision — improving lives through better security, sustainability and accessibility.

“Using AI vision, AI voice and AI data technologies, we will offer new experiences in which home appliances can be controlled and connected more intuitively,” he said.

Reimagining Home Spaces With AI: The Experience Zone

Upon entering the Experience Zone — which reconstructed familiar home spaces such as the living room, laundry room and kitchen — Samsung displayed some of its most helpful services. In the Security & Easy Connection Zone, attendees observed how Smart Forward constantly provides device upgrades and Samsung Knox, Samsung’s unique security standard, protects users’ personal information. In addition, visitors discovered how Calm Onboarding connects products to SmartThings and minimizes the hassle of registering devices after each purchase.

In the Bespoke AI Experience Zone, visitors tested the 2024 Bespoke AI products and Tap View on the Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+. Users can now mirror images or videos from their smartphone screen by tapping on the refrigerator door, so they can pick up where they left off and continue the movie or TV show they were just watching.

In addition, users can check expiration dates on food packages with the AI Vision Inside feature or ask for customized recipe recommendations with Samsung Food.

The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo combines the functions of a washer and dryer into a single, all-in-one appliance that uses AI technology to recommend optimal laundry cycles based on the user’s needs. The 7-inch LCD screen and AI-powered Bixby voice recognition further enhance user convenience.

Innovative approaches to energy efficiency were introduced in the For a Sustainable Future Zone — including the energy-efficient AI inverter compressor, the Reduced Fire Risk certification and microplastic-reducing filters. The Bespoke AI Hybrid refrigerator maximizes energy savings by combining hybrid cooling technology with an AI inverter compressor with thermoelectric elements.

At the “Welcome to BESPOKE AI” event, Samsung laid out its vision for the future of home appliances. More than just simple tools used in everyday life, Samsung’s home appliances promise to change users’ lives through innovations in efficiency, connectivity and personalization. Samsung will soon introduce the 2024 Bespoke AI product line at “Welcome to BESPOKE AI” events in the United States and France.

Samsung Electronics announced the launch of its new energy-efficient Extra Wide Bottom Mount Freezer¹ in Europe. The refrigerator was unveiled at ‘Welcome to BESPOKE AI’, a global launch event held at les Pavillon des Étangs in Paris on April 3. It achieves a high energy rating as a product itself, while its Wi-Fi capabilities allow for even further energy savings with SmartThings Energy.

“In response to the reality that energy efficiency is more important to consumers than ever, Samsung is launching a new model for the modern era,” said Moohyung Lee, EVP and Head of the Customer Experience Team of Digital Appliances (DA) Business at Samsung Electronics. “Through our considerable R&D efforts, we’ve been able to provide energy-saving opportunities in addition to the Samsung quality and features that global consumers appreciate. We’re confident that users would take advantages of Samsung’s new refrigerator in their day-to-day lives.”

Notably, the refrigerator has received an energy “A” rating according to EU energy standards, which is for the first time in Samsung’s extra wide bottom mount freezer type. Samsung implements its unique solutions to decrease energy consumption by 55.9% compared to the conventional model.² Especially the new AI Inverter Compressor³ is a key part to achieve an A grade according to EU energy standards.

The new high-efficient AI Inverter Compressor has been redesigned to increase the radius of the rotating parts which enables its inertia to be higher than the conventional compressor⁴ by 4.1 times. It means that the compressor can keep the power longer, so it uses less energy while keeping the temperature in the fridge moderate. The compressor also contributes to lowering the noise level by up to 5 times quieter than the conventional model⁵ thanks to the new control technology.

Additionally, the Extra Wide Bottom Mount Freezer supports the energy saving mode in SmartThings Energy⁶ which can reduce energy use by up to 15%.⁷ The SmartThings AI Energy Mode also allows users to easily check daily, weekly and monthly power consumption, and it even estimates monthly electric bills. If usage exceeds the established estimate, the mode can also proactively save energy.⁸ Furthermore, it can optimize the compressor speed and defrost cycle frequency, based on usage and surroundings, ensuring that users can enjoy fresher food items for longer.

Samsung also made the model to be competitive both in capacity and design as well. To enhance the capacity benefits of having a refrigerator with a wider width than common type, Samsung applies SpaceMax technology which has been the heritage of Samsung refrigerator. The fridge makes use of thin walls and efficient insulation to increase the storage volume while maintaining consistent temperatures. The extra storage space does not impact the exterior of the refrigerator, either, as the relatively compact size creates more room in users’ homes.

Apart from its performance and storage capabilities, the refrigerator brings a sleek design that makes it a great aesthetic fit for modern homes. It boasts a fully flat door and a recessed handle that grants the refrigerator a harmonious aesthetic. The Gentle Lighting controls brightness and prevents glare as well.

Availability

The energy-efficient Extra Wide Bottom Mount Freezer will be available in three capacity variants (538L, 508L and 458L) depending on the region, launching in Europe, CIS, the Middle East, Latin America, Southeast Asia, Canada and Africa.

The refrigerator is expected to be available from April in Europe and other regions sequentially.

Samsung Electronics today showcases its latest home appliance lineup at the press conference held in the global launch event, ‘Welcome to ‘BESPOKE AI,’¹ which takes place in three locations — Seoul, Paris and New York City. Samsung shares its vision for how connectivity amongst them can improve the overall experience at home and how artificial intelligence (AI) enhances the performance of appliances.

Jong-Hee (JH) Han, Vice Chairman, CEO and Head of Device eXperience (DX) Division at Samsung Electronics, kicked off the marathon of events by opening the media event at the Seoul ‘Welcome to BESPOKE AI’ by describing how Samsung home appliances not only perform well with the usual tasks but can do more than previously imagined with AI applied. Especially with screens added to the refrigerator, induction range and laundry machine, Bespoke appliances become a platform for entertainment, as well as an easy-to-access control hub for other connected Samsung appliances through SmartThings.

“Since the first introduction of BESPOKE in 2019, Samsung Electronics has presented to the market on how appliances can be customized to best fit each user’s home and lifestyle,” said JH Han. “Five years later, we now share our vision for AI in appliances with the products that expand the Bespoke legacy through enhanced connectivity and AI capabilities that will take the consumer experience to the next level.”

Bespoke AI Appliances Sync To Create New Experiences in Various Home Spaces

With built-in Wi-Fi, internal cameras, AI chips and compatibility with the SmartThings application, Samsung’s latest Bespoke AI appliances come with enhanced features and connectivity to lay the foundation for a truly smart home. Also, the new AI Home, a connected 7-inch LCD display that has been added to multiple products, provides intuitive, easy access and control over the whole connected ecosystem.

The AI Home includes 3D Map View, a feature that provides users with a full 3D view of the house, allowing them to easily locate all the appliances that are connected and control them. When users are cooking in the kitchen and feel that the temperature is too hot, for instance, they could turn on the air conditioner in other rooms through the AI Home on the induction range² without leaving the pots and pans unattended. While doing laundry, they could also start the robot vacuum cleaner in the living room from the AI Home on the washing machine, without having to make the journey back and forth. Also, users can receive calls coming to their phones through the AI Home, allowing them to answer timely while also continuing the housework they were doing. Moreover, the AI Home not only makes housework easier, but more enjoyable as well. Users can play their favorite songs, watch videos on the Internet app or refer to recipes on the screen while they are cooking.

Considering how people have mobile phones with them most of the time, Mobile Smart Connect is a new feature that pushes an alert to the phone when it is at close range with registered appliances. The pop-up notification includes quick control menu to execute key functions for the appliance directly from the phone, so users no longer have to search the house, looking for the actual remote control.³ This eliminates even the few steps and clicks⁴ that were required to access same features in the SmartThings application.

At the BESPOKE AI event, Samsung also showcases the new feature ‘Calm Onboarding,’ which makes it easier for users to join Samsung’s connected life. It frees users from having to go through the hassle of product registration, as it directly registers products purchased under a Samsung account at Samsung.com on to the SmartThings app with the same account.

To provide assurance to users as they step into the era of hyper-connected home appliances driven by technological advancement, Samsung also highlighted its comprehensive Knox security platform that protects all user data located on the connected appliances. In fact, the 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub⁵ became the first product in the industry to be verified to level ‘Diamond’ for its IoT security capabilities by UL Solutions, a leading global safety science company that evaluates hundreds of marketing claims each year. Other Family Hub models⁶ applying the same technology, and the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI have also achieved the same verification.

AI Expands Spectrum of Features to Samsung Home Appliances

The most distinctive difference between the three events, other than the location, is the product lineup unveiled during the respective press conferences, which reflects the actual appliances that will launch in each market.

The Seoul ‘BESPOKE AI’ event started off with the biggest lineup among the three locations with 14 new products including: the Bespoke French Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+, Bespoke Infinite Induction Line, Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI, Bespoke Jet AI, Bespoke Cube Air Infinite Line, the new 2024 4-Door refrigerator incorporating peltier technology and more.

The 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub⁷ is the primary control center for all things food, connecting the refrigerator to other appliances in the home. The AI Family Hub+,⁸ which is the large LCD screen in the front right panel of the refrigerator, is the key to intuitive AI experiences, where users can view recommended recipes and play music and videos for kitchen entertainment. The 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub comes with AI Vision Inside⁹ which uses an internal camera to identify 33 fresh food items that go in and out of the fridge. The recognized food items are listed and managed on the Family Hub display and can also be checked on the SmartThings app.¹⁰

Another key product is the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI, a robot vacuum and mop cleaner with AI-enhanced features including intelligent AI Recognition. The intelligent AI Recognition performs in different ways. The AI Object Recognition uses the AI Deep Neural Network (DNN) model and camera to recognize various objects¹¹ including humans,¹² pets¹³ and hard-to-see items like thin phone cables and rugs or mats. The AI Floor Detect senses the type of floor to clean, and when carpets are detected, the robot vacuum decides whether to lift up its mop or to go and leave the mop at its station to avoid contaminating the carpet with its wet mop. It also comes with the Clean Station Steam+ which brings a range of features for automatically maintaining the device, such as emptying the dust bag, refilling the water tank, washing and intensively steam cleaning¹⁴ the mop. The Clean Station Steam+ even sprays high-temperature steam¹⁵ onto the mop’s surface, reducing 99.99% of harmful bacteria.¹⁶

As energy-saving is an important criteria in the European market, the Paris ‘BESPOKE AI’¹⁷ event additionally introduced the new energy-efficient, extra wide fridge freezer¹⁸ and the washer lineup. The extra wide fridge freezer has received “A” grade according to European energy standards thanks to Samsung’s new AI Inverter Compressor. The new washer lineup includes various models from A-10%, A-20% and even an A-40% extra energy saving model. Especially, the A-40% extra energy efficient model is equipped with Bubble Shot Technology, which saves water and cycle time by pumping up the water inside the drum and spraying it on top of the clothes.

The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, presented at both Seoul and NYC events, is the All-in-One washer and dryer, providing the advantages of two separate appliances while freeing up valuable space. It comes with various AI features, such as remembering the periodic and seasonal needs of users and recommending the optimal cycle for the wash.¹⁹ With AI Opti Wash & Dry, the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo intelligently adjusts the washing and drying performance for each load and senses the weight of the laundry to dispense the appropriate amount of water and detergent. It also detects the fabric²⁰ and monitors the level of soiling during a cycle. If necessary, it adds more detergent and varies the washing time. It then adjusts the drying process to suit the weight and fabric type of users’ laundry. After finishing the cycle, users can monitor how much energy and water were consumed through the report provided on the SmartThings App.²¹

A unique appliance introduced only at the New York event held in Samsung 837 was the Bespoke Slide-in Range with AI Home. This product is a multi-functional induction range that also comes with various fun factors. It comes with an Internal Oven Camera that lets users see inside the oven from remote places, like on the TV²² from the living room, or even from outside the home through SmartThings on their mobile phones. With this, users can even get a short time-lapse video clip²³ with the highlight of the cooking process that they can share on social media.

Furthermore, Samsung is showcasing its vision of implementing generative AI to home appliances within this year. Especially, Bixby, Samsung’s voice assistant, will be a key in this. Generative AI will allow Bixby to go one step further from the current ability of being able to execute one order at a time, comprehending complex sentences and engaging in natural conversations. First of all, it will be able to understand compound demands like “Turn on the air conditioner to Wind Free mode, and let me know how the weather is.” It can also retain context from previous interactions for continuity, so if the user instructs Bixby to turn off the air purifier and then add, “Oh, and the TV, too,” Bixby can assist both requests. Users will also be able to rely on Bixby to come up with solutions, simply saying “the living room feels humid,” and ask “what should I do with all the potatoes I bought yesterday?” Bixby will interpret these multi-layered tasks and respond naturally to users’ prompts.

Advancing the Future of Appliances

Samsung is not only dedicated to presenting a better home experience, but also committed to creating more innovative and efficient products. The event was especially meaningful in the context that it not only introduced the new product lineups and features Samsung is launching, but also announced globally how all Wi-Fi connected appliances including those that customers already own, can change.

Samsung continues to upgrade Wi-fi connected appliances in the market and already in users’ homes through software updates and the development of SmartThings. Users can enjoy new features even with old models, and more energy saving features with products that were already bought. Smart Forward,²⁴ announced for the first time at the event, is a service that provides the newest features, security patches and upgrades through regular software updates. Users will be able to check available update information and receive notifications from the SmartThings App.²⁵ This ensures users with peace of mind and also contributes to reducing the frequency of appliance replacements.

SmartThings also continues to evolve, allowing users to save additionally on their energy usage after purchasing a product. Features such as Optimal Charging,²⁶ for example, are added so users can strategically plan out their energy use. SmartThings Energy allows users to easily monitor and control the amount of energy consumed by the connected Samsung appliances. Samsung also plans to launch its new Samsung Rewards program in the near future, which will allow users to get stamps each day if they save a certain amount of energy using AI Energy mode. Accumulated stamps can be converted and used at Samsung.com, Samsung Galaxy store and other Samsung purchase platforms.

To make efforts more impactful, Samsung introduces collaborations it made to implement solutions resulting in tangible reductions of energy use, while also making lives more convenient for users. Through a partnership with British Gas, linking SmartThings Energy’s Auto Demand Response feature with British Gas’ PeakSave, Samsung allows users to easily enjoy economic benefits through saving energy.

As a crucial player in the home appliance industry, Samsung revealed a goal to utilize next generation technologies for purposes beyond creating innovative products. It is about using engineering solutions that prolong product lifecycles, and reduce the frequency of replacements. Some of the methods introduced in the press conference include: Hybrid Cooling, newly incorporating the newly installed high-power ‘Peltier’ thermoelectric components in addition to the compressor resulting in improved cooling efficiency and performance, and low-maintenance filters for air purifiers obliterating the need for filter purchases or replacements.

Product safety is also an important factor that Samsung prioritizes, and Samsung strives to achieve and expand certifications to prove its product liability across all appliance categories, including reduced fire risk (RFR) certification for new products. This will assure that the certified appliances²⁷ are designed to effectively prevent fire incidents caused by the product.

At the end of the event, Samsung also revealed that it is collaborating with Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” (coming to theaters June 14²⁸), to communicate the features of the new Bespoke AI Laundry Combo. A new co-branded teaser video was shown that featured Inside Out 2 clips and showcased how, with the new washing machine, you can take the stressful emotions out of laundry with AI Bubble.

A recent study conducted by market research firm Ipsos highlights the significance of security in the age of AI. The study surveyed 17,000 people across 17 countries, using the title of “Our Life With AI: The reality of today and the promise of tomorrow.” A key finding was that 42 percent of respondents identified “better security” as a very important application for AI, with an additional 44 percent deeming it somewhat important.

AI technology is brimming with potential, but even the best AI will not be worthwhile if it fails to protect users — in fact, it could be dangerous. Samsung Electronics today announced that it has launched its 3D Map View feature, which was first unveiled at CES 2024 and is now available in all countries with SmartThings access.

Map View streamlines home management by turning real floor plans into virtual images in the SmartThings app. Users can clearly see their devices and conveniently adjust lighting, temperature, air quality and energy consumption at any time and place.

Map View addresses the challenge of managing the growing number of connected devices in every home worldwide and eases smart home management by eliminating the need to find each device separately before using it. It shows users their entire home at a glance and updates in real time as more devices are connected.

Map View’s previous version was a 2D model that only worked for homes where the floor plan was provided. However, this newly updated 3D Map View takes advantage of Spatial AI in Samsung devices — such as the Bespoke Jet Bot — using LiDAR¹ sensors in the device to precisely measure and map a home’s layout. Now, users can more easily understand the shape and spatial conditions of their homes on 3D maps.

The feature has also enhanced its filter function to allow for more efficient monitoring and control of required devices. It aims to offer a more customized and user-friendly smart service by using AI characters, which were also unveiled at CES 2024, by the end of the year.

Availability

Map View is available through the SmartThings app on Android and iOS mobile devices,² as well as TVs.³ Controls for the feature will also be made available through additional hubs, such as Family Hub refrigerators,⁴ within the first half of the year.

Initially, Map View was rolled out in Korea and the United States last year. But now, it can be used in all countries with access to the SmartThings app.

Samsung is currently collaborating with construction companies to expand Map View beyond homes to apartments and office spaces. These include an optimized user experience (UX) for large screens that assists B2B operators with signage, and Quick Control, which enables users to easily access key functions.

New Samsung Interactive Display Utilizes Access to Google Play Apps and Google Services for Unlimited Education Possibilities

During ISE, Samsung is also announcing its first Google Enterprise Devices Licensing Agreement (EDLA)-certified² interactive display (model name: WAD) expected to launch in the first half of 2024. Powered by Android 13, the WAD series — available in 65-, 75-, and 86-inch models — provides a seamless and intuitive learning experience for both teachers and students alike.

The WAD series offers an interactive classroom experience with a suite of educational tools. It provides access to numerous educational apps through Google Play, while also allowing access to various Google services, such as Google Classroom and Google Drive. The interactive display has the look and feel of a large tablet with a familiar and intuitive user interface (UI).

The WAD series has been meticulously engineered to meet various safety and reliability requirements in educational environments. The display offers enhanced protection³ during electrical surges or high humidity, adopting various technical measures including a 500V (DC) capacitor to instantly absorb high voltage up to 500V, and a glass type fuse to prevent damage. The WAD series also applies anti-humidity glue to the critical area of the chipset to withstand humid conditions, making it a valuable tool for schools located in areas with high-humidity or rainy climates.

Additionally, Device Management Solution (DMS) offers remote monitoring and control of classroom displays, even when unforeseen circumstances arise, to enhance convenience in educational settings. With Advanced Messaging, the displays can immediately send important messages across campuses, classrooms and public spaces. Partnering With Cisco, Unveiling 105” 5K Smart Signage Optimized for Hybrid Work Experience

Samsung today also announced an expanded partnership alongside Cisco to deliver enhanced collaboration experiences for hybrid workers. As part of this new partnership, Samsung unveiled its new 105-inch, 21:9 Smart Signage QPD-5K model that is compatible with Cisco Room Kit EQ, which is certified for Microsoft Teams.

Samsung’s newly released 105” QPD-5K model comes with 5K⁴ resolution and a 21:9 aspect ratio. It provides an intuitive, yet natural video conferencing experience ideal for hybrid workspaces. The QPD-5K is compatible with the Cisco Room Bar and Room Kit Series, creating an efficient meeting environment by integrating camera, audio and all other capabilities required for video conferencing.

Samsung Electronics today announced it has teamed up with British Gas, enabling customers to better manage their energy use in homes around Britain. This new initiative — an expansion of SmartThings Energy to integrate British Gas’ PeakSave incentive program — provides users to make their home more energy-efficient with less intervention.

“As one of the U.K.’s most trusted brands, British Gas is the perfect fit for us as an innovative technology business,” said Chanwoo Park, Executive Vice President at Samsung Electronics. “Together we are now able to harness SmartThings Energy to provide customers with easier control into optimizing their daily routines and energy use.”

British Gas is the U.K.’s leading supplier of energy and home services, and it has been providing these services to Britain’s homes for over 200 years — having launched in 1812 as the world’s first utility company. In addition to supplying energy to 10 million UK homes and businesses, it is also focused on getting the U.K. to net zero by 2050 through helping customers to reduce their homes’ carbon footprints with a range of energy-efficient home improvements.

One of the core outcomes of the collaborative relationship is the integration of SmartThings Energy’s Auto Demand Response (Auto DR) feature with British Gas’ PeakSave in Great Britain starting from today. PeakSave rewards British Gas customers for shifting their electricity usage during peak hours when demand for electricity is high. Customers can easily take advantage of the program through SmartThings Energy’s support for Auto DR, which automatically adjusts appliances’ operating modes when an event is triggered. Customers can then earn money for using less electricity during the events.

There are a few different methods for activating SmartThings Energy’s Auto DR feature depending on the type of appliance. First, it can automatically turn on the AI Energy Mode in SmartThings Energy to save extra energy use in the supported appliances.¹ Second, with the power-off function, users can consume less energy from having their appliances turned off when appropriate — this includes certain third-party lights and plugs.² Finally, savings can also be achieved through smart temperature adjustment for EHS (Heatpump) products and third-party thermostats.³ SmartThings Energy even helps users who do not own Auto DR-compatible appliances by sending alerts in the application when a peak event is triggered enabling users to take action in their own ways to save energy when notified.

In addition to Great Britain, Samsung has already rolled out its DR service in a number of other regions — including Seoul, California and New York in 2023. Samsung plans to explore further collaborations and continue to provide multi-faceted programs that contribute towards the Net Zero Home, as it looks to expand the service across the world. Recent achievements along these lines include the energy-efficient residential community in Brobyholm, Sweden announced in November 2023, as well as the Southern Company project unveiled at CES® 2024.

One of the company’s most recent projects¹ includes the Brobyholm smart city near Stockholm, Sweden — in which Samsung is joining hands with industry leaders to create a smart, energy-efficient residential community based on energy independence.

▲ Samsung is providing Net Zero Home solutions to the Brobyholm smart city in Sweden. The goal is to build a 2,000-home smart city near the Stockholm area, with approximately 500 homes set to be available in 2025 and sold sequentially until 2028.

Generating and Storing Energy From Dawn to Dusk

As soon as the sun rises in the morning, an energy-efficient home begins producing and storing energy using advanced solar panels and storage batteries. On clear, sunny days, the smart home system switches on the air conditioning or heating in advance — to save energy later on in the day, once the sun sets or the weather becomes overcast.

Using Samsung’s integrated and expansive multi-device ecosystem SmartThings, users can seamlessly control their home appliances and smart home devices. AI Energy Mode on SmartThings Energy helps users effortlessly save energy throughout their home by automatically optimizing energy usage of appliances.

Smart Energy Management Away From Home

Homeowners no longer have to worry about leaving their pets home alone on hot summer days. SmartThings will automatically turn on the air conditioner and lower the blinds to keep indoor temperatures cool and prevent strong sunlight from entering the house — allowing furry friends to stay comfortable inside. Additionally, home sensors can detect if a window is left open and alert users accordingly to avoid unnecessary energy waste.

Before leaving their home, users can preload their laundry into the washer and set it to run later. After the start button is pressed, SmartThings will determine when energy usage is lowest² in the day and automatically start the cycle. As such, users can manage their energy usage even when they’re not at home.

Wind Down With SmartThings

After returning home from a long day, SmartThings Cooking allows users to easily prepare meals by sending a recipe’s cooking settings straight to the oven. When tidying up after dinner, SmartThings will automatically start the dishwashing cycle at off-peak hours² to help cut costs. Before settling down for the night, users can enjoy a warm shower using pre-heated water from the morning’s surplus energy while SmartThings’ Bedtime Routine automatically adjusts the lights and home appliance settings to create an optimal environment for a restful night of sleep.

With SmartThings Energy, users can view how much energy their home produces and uses as well as other in-depth energy analytics. From laundry to cooking, SmartThings encourages users to complete their household chores using the energy produced by their homes. Samsung is making homes smarter with SmartThings and empowering users to take steps to create their own Net Zero Home.

“Tesla Energy’s customers can now manage and monitor the power status of their homes through SmartThings Energy and Samsung devices in addition to the Tesla app, ensuring more access and connectivity,” said Chanwoo Park, EVP and Head of IoT Development Team of Device Platform Center at Samsung Electronics. “This new collaboration is a key milestone for Samsung Electronics in making our solution more widely available beyond home appliances.”

The key consumer benefit of Samsung’s collaboration with Tesla allows SmartThings Energy to connect to Tesla Powerwall, Solar Inverter, Wall Connector charging and EVs, allowing SmartThings Energy to display information relating to users’ energy production, storage and usage.

Additionally, consumers will be able to better prepare for power disruptions and outages through SmartThings Energy’s ability to sync with the Tesla app’s Powerwall “Storm Watch” function. This means that in the case of extreme weather events such as typhoons or heavy snowfall, users can be alerted through SmartThings on their connected Samsung TVs and mobiles in addition to the Tesla app. What’s more, they can activate AI Energy Mode before and during power outages to extend the remaining backup energy stored in Tesla Powerwall.

Samsung’s utilization of the Tesla API is part of its continual drive toward making substantial progress on the Net Zero Home project and enhancing the multi-device experience of SmartThings users.

“At Tesla we are excited to add capability to our products to interact with other intelligent devices and software in customers’ homes. We recently published FleetAPI, allowing developers to interact with Powerwall, Solar and Wall Connector in addition to our vehicles. We are pleased that Samsung has chosen to be an early developer, given its leading position in consumer smart home technology. Customers will be able to view the status of their grid connectivity across multiple devices and intelligently control home loads to extend their Powerwall energy when off grid,” said Drew Baglino at Tesla.

SmartThings Energy connected to Tesla Powerwall will be first shown at the Samsung booth at CES® 2024. The actual service is currently in development and is targeted to launch in the second quarter of 2024.² Please note that the features described above are subject to change.

Samsung Electronics today announced a collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group to expand its SmartThings platform to support connected cars, including electric vehicles (EVs). The announcement came after the companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on January 3 to develop solutions for future lifestyles that fully integrate the smart home and connected cars.

The two companies will work together for the next-generation smart home to connect Samsung’s SmartThings with Hyundai and Kia’s connected cars, including EVs, to develop the “Home-to-Car” and “Car-to-Home” services as well as an integrated home energy management service.

The Home-to-Car and Car-to-Home services connect the smart home with in-vehicle infotainment systems, allowing for remote control in both directions. Through the SmartThings platform, users will be able to perform a variety of actions pertaining to their cars while at home — starting them, controlling smart air conditioning, opening and closing windows and checking their charging status. And from cars, the control of home appliances such as TVs, air conditioners and EV chargers will also be possible.

“This collaboration will enable communication from Home-to-Car and integrated home energy management services that are optimized for future lifestyles,” said Chanwoo Park, Executive Vice President at Samsung Electronics. “By connecting the SmartThings platform with vehicles, we’ll be able to significantly enhance the customer experience in both the home and the car.”

Users will be able to adjust their environments with SmartThings by simultaneously operating multiple devices — including vehicles — through routines such as “good morning routine” and “arriving home routine.” For example, when a Galaxy smartphone’s morning alarm goes off, the curtains will automatically open, and the lights and television will turn on. When users are ready to go out for work, the user’s car will adjust itself to an ideal temperature. Also, the smartphone and TV screens will display information such as the EV’s remaining battery and driving range.

“This is an opportunity to make the connected car’s Car-to-Home and Home-to-Car services more convenient in various fields,” said Haeyoung Kwon, Vice President of Hyundai and Kia’s Infotainment Development Center. “We plan to accelerate our technology development to continuously make global Hyundai and Kia customers’ journeys meaningful.”

The integrated home energy management service will allow users to monitor how much energy is consumed by the connected devices in their homes. Energy information of their EVs and chargers will also be available, enabling users to adjust the optimal time for charging their vehicles. EVs connected to the integrated home energy management service offer the possibility of automatically setting the optimal time for charging by factoring in different pricing by time of day,¹ the power demand response (DR) program,² photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage system (ESS) data,³ and time-specific carbon emissions.⁴

To further strengthen Car-to-Home services, Samsung is working closely with HARMAN, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics. HARMAN’s “Ready Upgrade” is a digital cockpit package product that allows hardware and software upgrades. With Ready Upgrade, users will be able to install SmartThings functions to utilize various Car-to-Home services.

Samsung Newsroom sat down with five prominent SDC23 speakers to delve deep into some of the company’s updates and how they add convenience to and revamp the user experience.

SmartThings and Matter: Offering an Even Better Connected Experience

Charles Kim of the SmartThings Team highlighted the updates to Samsung’s SmartThings home ecosystem, including expanded support for Matter devices, and discussed how SmartThings is leading the new era of smart homes through its advanced multi-device network.

Q. SmartThings has been working hard to create a hyper-connected experience for customers based on seamless interoperability with third-party devices. Could you discuss a few of the most notable announcements unveiled during this year’s SDC?

Matter stands as the universal IP-based communications protocol for smart home IoT devices, and is supported by major corporations all over the world. When it comes to expansive smart home experiences, Samsung has been at the forefront of widening its device network, which was furthered by its added support for Matter devices beginning last year. To expand on this, we are now offering an enhanced Matter-compatible ecosystem that will allow developers to create new apps, hubs and clouds.

One of our first steps is to expand the application of Matter to a broader range of devices and introduce new features to these devices to enhance its capabilities. These features include adding control functionalities for Matter-compatible devices, which support Matter Bridge¹ devices as well as over-the-air (OTA)² and Multi-Hub Network.³ One of Matter’s key advantages is its compatibility with various platforms from different companies. As such, it facilitates easier usage of the Multi-Admin⁴ feature, allowing administrators to efficiently control multiple devices simultaneously from a single platform.

To take innovation further, we plan to introduce an Application Programming Interface (API) for controlling Matter devices via the SmartThings Hub — making it easier for developers to utilize Samsung’s platform. In addition, the Software Development Kit (SDK) will allow the seamless integration of Matter devices within the SmartThings platform.

We hope that this will empower more developers to deliver new, advanced services to users that utilize Matter devices within the SmartThings platform.

Q. How will SmartThings contribute to the evolution of smart homes in the future?

Our vision for SmartThings encompasses various dimensions of home automation. Currently, users can control Samsung and third-party IoT devices in their homes through SmartThings, which gives them the ability to optimize and automate certain functions among connected devices. Looking forward to the future, smart homes are poised to elevate personalized home experiences by harnessing the power of device-connected AI and machine learning, which will deliver users ultra-personalized home services that meet their unique needs and preferences.

One of these future-forward settings is Ambient Sensing, which recognizes the space the user is in and automatically adjusts to the user’s preferred settings. Additionally, we intend to advance Edge Computing technology to ensure a stable and secure connection experience for users, enabling SmartThings to serve as a main hub for such services. Our aim is to help users enjoy a higher quality of life, and we will continue enhancing SmartThings in order to achieve this goal.

HDR10+ GAMING: Delivering a Perfectly Immersive Gaming Experience

Alongside the rapid expansion of the gaming market came an increased demand for an enhanced gaming environment. In line with these trends, Samsung has been working with leading game content companies to develop advanced visual technologies, setting a standard for the industry. Suzie Hyun of Samsung Research America spoke about HDR10+ GAMING.

Q. As game image quality technology continues to advance, what are the advantages of using HDR10+ GAMING while playing games?

In comparison to the conventional Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) format, High Dynamic Range (HDR) displays images at a higher brightness, greater contrast and with a wider color range — accentuating all on-screen details and making gameplay even more immersive.

From the standpoint of a developer, an ideal HDR gaming experience provides jaw-dropping realism, fully immersing users in the heart of the action. Equipped with HDR10+ GAMING technology, game creators are able to provide next-level immersion, drawing users deeper into the game world.

On the user side, HDR10+ GAMING technology automatically sets the game and display to optimal HDR settings, ensuring a consistent, stunning and engaging gaming session from start to end.

Q. How is HDR10+ different when watching videos and gaming?

HDR10+ GAMING technology delivers cutting-edge gaming experiences by combining ultra-responsiveness, an important factor for ideal gameplay, with leading image quality optimization technology. Equipped with these advanced technologies, HDR10+ GAMING provides immersive gaming experiences and allows users to experience the content as the game creator intended.

The Software Platform Innovation for Home Appliances: Tizen

The Tizen operating system will be extended and is set to be integrated into a broader range of home appliances. SeongIl Hahm of the S/W Development Team explained Tizen and its distinguished services that upgrade user experiences.

Q. What role does Tizen play in home appliances?

The landscape of home appliances has undergone a remarkable transformation, expanding beyond customers’ imagination. With the integration of the latest AI technologies, these appliances can perform a variety of unique functions. For example, appliances can detect food, the user’s voice and presence using high-tech cameras, microphones and Neural Processing Units (NPUs).

In driving these innovations forward, Tizen — Samsung’s open and flexible operating system (OS) ­— will help evolve home appliances and expand their capabilities. Samsung plans to expand Tizen to home appliances equipped with even larger screens than before, which will allow users to intuitively check the status of their devices and control them, as well as monitor other devices connected to SmartThings.

Tizen not only supports network, multimedia, web and security capabilities, but it also offers flexible software performance based on different hardware modules across product lines. It provides a web and development environment that is most commonly used by developers so helps them to adopt services easier.

Q. During SDC23, new technologies such as on-device AI and AI Home Edge Hub were introduced. How will these advancements elevate the capabilities of home appliances?

On-device AI-support signifies the integrated AI engine within home appliances, supporting round-the-clock deep learning inference. Home appliances generate a wealth of information, far beyond what users may realize. Learning from this information can significantly improve the user experience. Examples of AI functionalities include how refrigerators and air conditioners can save energy by predicting the temperature, how vacuum cleaners adjust the cleaning mode according to the floor type, and how washers and dryers can optimize laundering according to the clothing material.

Another important consideration that AI performance levels vary among different home appliances led us to work on developing AI Home Edge Hub. By device-to-device sharing of AI capabilities, it significantly enhance the performance of each device.

To illustrate this, let’s imagine that an AI inference task was delivered to the Family Hub, which is the most smart appliance nearby. Upon receiving this information, the Family Hub transmits it to the robot vacuum cleaner, which then notifies the user when the cleaning process is complete.

Many of these futuristic scenarios will become realizable through cutting-edge software innovation.

Samsung Privileged Health SDK: Helping the Development of Advanced Digital Health Services and Solutions

Incorporating essential features such as sleep, fitness, mental health services and health indicator monitoring, Samsung Health has firmly established itself as a comprehensive health solution. Sungchull Lee of the Health S/W R&D Group presented Samsung Privileged Health SDK, which offers users an unparalleled digital health experience.

Q. Could you introduce some of the main developers and partners that are using Samsung Privileged Health SDK?

With the Samsung Privileged Health SDK, Samsung aims to support developers and service providers in developing more sophisticated and advanced digital health services and solutions.

Developers and service partners around the world have expressed their interest in utilizing Samsung Privileged Health SDK and many are using it to develop apps. Interested parties can apply to the Partner Program via the official Samsung Developer website and can begin developing and utilizing the platform’s suite of tools once approved.

According to data measured on the Galaxy Watch’s BioActive sensor, our SDK partners span across a variety of digital healthcare fields — including heart health monitoring, remote patient monitoring, mental health services, worker healthcare and digital therapeutics. Moving forward, our primary goal is to strengthen Samsung Privileged Health SDK’s role as a health platform and expand its ecosystem to support the sustained growth of our partners.

Q. What are the strengths of the Samsung Privileged Health SDK, and how can digital health services harness its capabilities?

Samsung Privileged Health SDK offers a convenient and consistent development environment, as developers can measure biometric information through the Galaxy Watch’s BioActive sensor.

Within the Samsung Privileged Health SDK, there is a range of data types available for service research and development, including the Galaxy Watch’s specialized functions — body composition and skin temperature measurement. Additionally, the platform incorporates an advanced batching method, which aggregates data for a certain period of time to ensure both efficient data measurement and minimal battery consumption.

The skin temperature measurement function, for example, can be used to improve sleep habits, predict the menstrual cycle, estimate exercise intensity and so on, whereas the inter-beat interval can calculate stress index, detect sleep stages and monitor irregular heart rate.

Samsung’s commitment to enhancing SDK’s capabilities persists, and it will continue to provide a consistent and simple API with samples to make it easier for developers to utilize.

Samsung Health Stack: Contributing to Broadening the Digital Health Ecosystem

Amidst increasing adoption of digital tools and software for medical research within the healthcare industry, Eric Song of Samsung Research’s Data Services Lab introduced Samsung Health Stack — a groundbreaking open-source tool designed to simplify the management and analysis of health research.

Q. Samsung Health Stack was first unveiled at SDC last year, and subsequently released version 1.0 this year. What objectives does Samsung aim to accomplish with Samsung Health Stack?

Looking at recent trends in the IT industry, a variety of wearable devices are rapidly evolving. In the same regard, sensor technology that can be deployed is advancing at a swift pace.

Alongside these technological advancements, the concept of “digital therapeutics” has gained traction within the healthcare industry. Many organizations are actively seeking to treat diseases in novel ways, including the use of software to further these aims. The goal of Samsung Health Stack is to make it easier for medical researchers, who may be unfamiliar with IT systems, to safely access and utilize digital health information.

Additionally, as an open-source project, Samsung Health Stack seeks to dismantle the barrier between medical researchers and the field of digital technology field, laying the groundwork for the development of the digital health industry.

As it supports developers and researchers in the field, Samsung Health Stack will contribute to the establishment of a digital health ecosystem for both Samsung and the broader healthcare industry.
