Samsung Electronics Celebrates Earth Day; Reflects on Environmental Strategy Progress

4/21/2023

In September 2022, Samsung Electronics announced its environmental strategy, a comprehensive approach to join global efforts in tackling climate change. At its core, the strategy was geared towards three main goals:

  1. To achieve net zero emissions by 2050
  2. To provide energy-and resource-efficient products to empower consumers for sustainable living
  3. To invest in and develop innovative technologies for a better planet

This Earth Day, Samsung reflects on the progress that has been made throughout the past six months and looks forward to the next phase of changes to come.

Starting strong at ISE 2023

Since the creation of the new strategy, Samsung has hit the ground running and made significant strides towards its goals. The company showcased a new era of sustainable digital signage at Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) in January 2023, featuring a sustainability zone that highlighted the eco-conscious practices applied to digital signage products across all five stages of the product lifecycle – sourcing, production, distribution, product use and recycling. More specifically, the company showcased:

Enhanced smart signage products: Samsung’s 2023 smart signage products (QHC, QMC, QBC) are approximately 40% slimmer than previous models, which means the number of shipping containers required for logistics after production can be reduced by more than 20% compared to the previous model. In addition, smart signage products support automatic screen brightness adjustment by adopting an illuminance sensor which reacts to surrounding light conditions, helping users manage their power consumption automatically. Plus, the resin used for the rear covers contains 10% of Post-Consumer Materials (PCM).

Additionally, Samsung’s cloud-based MagicINFO solution enhances Remote Management and helps to manage multiple signage displays and a variety of content efficiently. This translates to fewer necessary site visits and helps prevent energy wastes by easily dimming or turning off signage when they’re not needed.

New eco-conscious outdoor signage: Samsung debuted the new model of its outdoor LED signage built for the sports industry and spectacular landmark locations: the XHB series. XHB has been upgraded to be more eco-conscious, with a design twice as thin and with power consumption reduced by over 15% when compared to the previous model. The new model can reduce approximately 2,492 tons of CO2 emissions every year, which is equivalent to the amount of CO2 sequestered by about 290,000 30-year-old pine trees in one year.1

In addition to the XHB series, Samsung introduced a small-sized, 24-inch outdoor signage display (Model Name: OH24B) to cater to the electric vehicle (EV) charger market. The signage boasts unparalleled energy efficiency with the industry’s lowest power consumption (a maximum of 90W) above 20-inches, perfect for an EV charging station which requires 24/7 operation and information delivery.

What’s to come?

Samsung is extremely focused on developing new technologies and implementing further sustainable practices to enable a brighter future for all. Building on the momentum from ISE 2023, Samsung will continue to enhance its digital signage by using advanced manufacturing technology and automated management to save energy in everyday use while enabling a more eco-conscious business operation.

More specifically, Samsung is increasingly focused on its efforts in the EV industry, especially following the 2023 State of the Union address, in which the administration announced its intentions to build 500,000 electric vehicle charging stations across the country. In tandem, nearly all major automakers have announced plans to become 100 percent EV by 2040 or sooner, meaning the time is now to make sustainable changes that last. Samsung has already partnered with IoTecha and Palmer Digital Group to further incentivize businesses towards the technology, and looks forward to continued momentum throughout the rest of the year and beyond.

A new member of RE100, a global initiative dedicated to pursuing 100 percent renewable energy, Samsung will also continue its commitment to sustainability by matching the electric power needs of all international markets where it operates, with renewable energy outside Korea within five years.

Earth Day marks an exciting time to celebrate the progress that has been made, but most of all, Samsung is eager to continue its sustainability efforts throughout all stages of the product life cycle and across all of the exciting product milestones to come. 1 The amount of carbon emissions for XHB was compared with that of its predecessor (XPR) based on sales in 2022. XHB’s annual carbon emissions were calculated via Carbon Footprint Calculator (https://www.kcen.kr/tanso/intro.green) in January 16, 2023. (high voltage, summer). XHB’s carbon reduction effect equivalent to planting trees was calculated based on The Average Amount of Carbon Absorbed by Forest Trees Devised by National Institute of Forest Science, Korea (ver. 1.2) on July, 2019.
