Samsung Employees Share Energy Saving Experiences

10/11/2023

As critical conversations about the climate crisis continue, 53% of homeowners agree1 that they are concerned about their household’s impact on the environment and 84% say1 they will look for energy efficient models the next time they shop for a device or an appliance.

By collaborating with eco-conscious partners, such as ENERGY STAR, Samsung is building a wide ecosystem of products and services designed to help you make a better impact on the environment, one choice at a time. For example, ENERGY STAR certified products can save you up to $4502 on your annual household energy bill by meeting strict energy efficient standards set by the US Environmental Protection Agency and US Department of Energy. And when paired with SmartThings Energy, a service within the SmartThings app3, you can take your energy management to the next level with recommendations based on real-time energy consumption data.

In honor of ENERGY STAR Day this October 11, we sat down with Samsung employees to hear about their energy saving experiences with their favorite Samsung appliances. Here’s what they had to say…

Why did you choose to purchase an ENERGY STAR certified or energy efficient Samsung appliance?

Daniel: The search for a new appliance initially started when we realized our dishwasher needed to be replaced. After many nights of research, we realized that the most important thing for our family was an energy efficient option to cut down on electricity without sacrificing performance. We care about the environment as a family, so we strive to reduce waste and energy usage wherever we can.

Angela: Our last washing machine was purchased when we bought our house 14 years ago, and eventually the time had come when it was no longer high functioning. When shopping for a new appliance, it was clear that an ENERGY STAR certified appliance was the right choice for our family. I appreciate that ENERGY STAR appliances are not only designed to help lessen our impact on the environment, but the ENERGY STAR option from Samsung was also a more affordable option.

Kevin: We have been purchasing ENERGY STAR certified appliances for a long time, since they are a great way to take control over our monthly household energy usage. We have three kids, so anything to help mitigate our home’s power consumption – especially when our washing machine and dishwasher never seem to get a break – makes a huge difference!

How has your appliance played a role in lowering your overall household energy bill?

Daniel: We’ve seen a noticeable difference in our energy usage and costs with our new Samsung dishwasher. Now that we have the ability to monitor the usage through the SmartThings application, we find it incredibly insightful because we have access to data that we can’t extrapolate from our utility providers. Having historical data of our monthly usage on our connected appliances really makes us feel empowered knowing we can control how much impact we have on the environment. And now, because I can see all of this on my phone, I can also share meaningful visual representations of our energy usage with my son and help give him more context to how much energy we use on a daily basis.

Angela: With two small kids and an active household, we do A LOT of laundry. From lacrosse uniforms to beach towels, it feels like there’s always a load going in. One of the main selling points of our Samsung washer was the generous size – it fits more clothes meaning less loads! And that means less energy used and less money spent on our energy and water bills.

Kevin: We’ve been strong supporters of ENERGY STAR certified appliances for a long time. With each new generation of appliances, we see more substantial energy savings. We recently bought a new Samsung refrigerator, and that alone has made a major difference in energy consumption. Plus, by connecting our Samsung refrigerator, washer and dryer to the SmartThings app, we get notified if a door has been left open and when our laundry cycles are complete. We can keep the house running much more efficiently from our phones.

Do you have any advice for those who are thinking about making the switch to an ENERGY STAR certified Samsung appliance?

Daniel: 100% make the change, if not for the environment, then at least for your wallet! At first, I was very wary about the performance of our energy-efficient appliances, but they function even better than the ones they replaced. My dishwasher is the quietest one I’ve ever owned. If you could have the best in terms of functionality, style, and efficiency – what more could you possibly ask for?

Angela: When it’s time for that new appliance, there are so many options.  It was a no-brainer for our family to make the choice that not only benefits us through a range of features, but also benefits the environment.  My advice would be that the planet and your wallet will thank you for an ENERGY STAR purchase!

Kevin: At this point, there are ENERGY STAR certified appliances that fit almost every use case and budget. There really is no reason not to use the most efficient appliance that fits your needs. Small changes over time can lead to major home energy savings. It doesn’t matter if you start big (refrigerator) or small-er (dishwasher), the benefits are immediate.
