Samsung Partners with the Victor Cruz Foundation to Support Sustainable Rebuilding Efforts in Puerto Rico

9/28/2018

Isabela, Puerto Rico, September 21, 2018As part of the company’s ongoing efforts to support areas devastated by the lasting impacts of recent hurricanes, Samsung Electronics America today joined Super Bowl Champion Victor Cruz and the Victor Cruz Foundation, the Hispanic Federation and local community organizations in Puerto Rico that are working to support grid-independent community solar in hurricane-devastated areas of the island.

To date, Samsung, the Victor Cruz Foundation and the Hispanic Federation together provided Solar Libre Puerto Rico with $180,000 to support the installation of solar panels and other technologies that provide electricity and connectivity to those in need. During the visit, Samsung and Cruz met with solar installation apprentices who learned the trade through a six-week education program with Solar Libre Puerto Rico.

“We’re proud to continue our partnership with the Victor Cruz Foundation and the collective impact we’ve been able to have on helping youth build a brighter future. Now, to work with the Hispanic Federation and Solar Libre Puerto Rico, Samsung is thrilled to be able to support the revitalization of communities heavily affected by Hurricane Maria last year as well as enhance the development of youth STEM skills to create a sustainable energy source and future skilled workers to maintain it,” said Ann Woo, Director of Corporate Citizenship at Samsung Electronics America.

Samsung has seen first-hand the power of partnerships and collaboration in making a real difference and recognizes the importance of engaging local communities when it comes to solving real-world problems today. Samsung began working with the Victor Cruz Foundation in 2014 as part of its commitment to STEM education through the creation of a hands-on, reader-friendly and impactful curriculum.

“I’m excited to see that our work with Samsung, the Hispanic Federation and Solar Libre Puerto Rico has had such an impact on communities and individuals recovering from Hurricane Maria,” said Victor Cruz, former NFL Superbowl Champion. “Since our partnership began, Samsung has been an excellent supporter of the Victor Cruz Foundation and many of our programs. I look forward to continuing this relationship and growing our foundation’s STEM education initiatives.”

From its Annual Charity Gala, education-based Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest, Veteran Support and partner programming with Covenant House and Junior Achievement, Samsung makes a definitive impact in the communities it calls home.
