In an era where the art of cinema and professional equipment continue to evolve, Samsung Electronics is propelling this transformation through its contribution to establishing Culver Post. Nestled in the heart of Los Angeles, this state-of-the-art theatrical post-production studio is a recent addition to Amazon’s portfolio of production and entertainment businesses, further enhancing the area’s reputation as a hub for creativity and innovation.

In partnership with industry pioneers 424 Post and Harbor, Samsung provided a 34-foot, 8K Samsung IWA LED and DCI-certified 4K Samsung Onyx LED displays to create a true cinema-style environment for theatrical color grading and immersive sound mixing. The groundbreaking studio environment not only signifies a leap into the future of cinematic production and consumption but also underscores the trust that experts place in Samsung’s technology.

Culver Post: A Beacon of Innovation in Post-Production and HDR Cinematography

▲ Samsung Electronics provided a 34-foot, 8K Samsung IWA LED and DCI-certified 4K Samsung Onyx LED displays to Culver Post in partnership with 424 Post and Harbor

Culver Post was created thanks to the visionary collaboration between renowned Los Angeles sound studio 424 Post and global post-production leader Harbor. This full-service post-production studio is expected to bring unmatched HDR and SDR mastering capabilities.

Why were Samsung’s display technologies specifically chosen by 424 Post and Harbor, both leaders in their respective fields? The answer lies in Samsung’s commitment to innovation, quality and the immersive viewing experience.

The Culver Post offers five stages for theatrical color grading and sound mixing, with the first stage outfitted with Samsung’s cutting-edge 34-foot, 8K IWA LED cinema display and the second stage with the DCI-certified 4K Onyx LED display. Each stage is complemented by Meyer Sound Ultra Reflex cinema sound systems featuring Dolby Atmos sound. Both stages can accommodate approximately 50 guests, which allows the post-production team to experience a true cinematic working environment for directors, cinematographers, editors, colorists and other professionals.

▲ Culver Post features a remarkable 34-foot 8K IWA cinema display for a true cinema-style environment for color grading and sound mixing

The 8K IWA LED cinema display is ideal for both HDR and SDR color grading, while Onyx, the world’s first DCI-certified cinema LED display, is perfect for HDR color grading and mastering. These displays outperform standard digital cinema projection systems in terms of detail, contrast and brightness, positioning Culver Post at the forefront of cinematic technology and ensuring that the studio is future-proofed for upcoming advancements in post-production technology.

“Samsung is committed to using innovative display technology to revolutionize the way that content is created and consumed,” said David Phelps, Head of the Display Division, Samsung Electronics America. “The new Culver Post post-production studio marks a tangible milestone in the future of cinema and post-production. Filmmakers and creators can now edit and experience video content as it would be seen and heard on the big screen to enable immersive storytelling that leaves a lasting impact on audiences.”

▲ Culver Post’s groundbreaking studio environment not only signifies a leap into the future of cinematic production and consumption but also underscores the trust that experts place in Samsung’s technology

Superior Cinematic Displays to Optimize Post-Production Workflow

The selection of Samsung’s technology for Culver Post reflects the displays’ superior capabilities for HDR post-production. Enhanced brightness, contrast and detail transform the color grading and mastering process, allowing creators to see their work as it will appear in realistic viewing environments. The theaters and their immersive cinema display also turn mastering into a communal creative experience, bringing the entire production team together for collaboration.

▲ Each theater offers a cinema-style viewing experience, with enough seating to host small groups for exclusive screenings and post-production sessions

The collaboration with Culver Post is a testament to Samsung’s leadership in display technology and the company’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of cinematic experiences. By meeting the high standards of industry experts like 424 Post and Harbor, Samsung continues to raise the bar for post-production studios worldwide.

Samsung Electronics announced exciting new ways for gamers to experience game streaming with the addition of new partners and the introduction of game streaming to select 2021 Samsung TV models1 and 4K games, further delivering on its promise of bringing the future of gaming to consumers across the globe.

Antstream and Blacknut Joining Samsung’s Game Streaming Offer

Antstream Arcade is the world’s largest cloud gaming service that provides players access to over 1,500 iconic games and weekly new multiplayer challenges and tournaments. Select Samsung TV owners will soon be able to battle their friends and the global community at the best games from the 80s, 90s and 00s, from Pac-Man to Mortal Kombat and Metal Slug.

“Antstream Arcade believes that combining gaming’s past with gaming’s future will push the industry forward to the next era of video games,” said Steve Cottam, CEO of Antstream Arcade. “What fulfills that promise better than retro arcade games played on Samsung’s most advanced Smart TVs? Game streaming provides gamers with more opportunities to play games they love or classics they missed out on.”

With a growing catalog of 500+ premium PC and console games, Blacknut’s Cloud Gaming subscription based service offers the largest unlimited access to gaming content for TV screens. Blacknut allows a “click and play” experience, allowing up to five players to play simultaneously on any compatible smartphone, PC or Smart TV. Blacknut’s library focuses on core and casual family members, delivering a wealth of titles spanning classic AAA games, indie favorites, story-driven adventures, strategy and also the largest collection of racing and sports games. Blacknut’s members can enjoy acclaimed hits, such as Metro Exodus, Overcooked as well as a vast collection of Disney games.

“Blacknut is now bringing the largest Cloud Gaming catalog included in one subscription to Samsung, the number one game streaming destination,” said Nabil Laredj, VP, Business Development & Licensing at Blacknut. “We designed Blacknut as a family gaming platform including five player profiles that can play simultaneously. Bringing our service to Samsung devices allows more gamers to experience the future of gaming.”

Launching in 2023, both Antstream and Blacknut game streaming will become available to owners of select 2021, 2022 & 2023 Samsung TVs.

Bringing Cloud Games to Millions of 2021 Samsung Smart TV Owners

Rolling out through the end of the year, Samsung is giving more players access to game streaming through select 2021 Samsung Smart TVs. Samsung will make available individual apps from game streaming partners Xbox, NVIDIA GeForce NOW and Utomik, with Blacknut and Antstream Arcade coming in 2023. By expanding the game streaming experience to select 2021 Samsung Smart TVs, existing Samsung customers will now have instant access to the same games available through the Samsung Gaming Hub on 2022 Smart TVs and Monitors.

“When Samsung Gaming Hub rolled out earlier this year on 2022 TV models, the number one question we received was ‘when is game streaming coming to my 2021 TV.’ Today we are happy to share with our eager fans that they will be able to play the games they love before the end of this year,” said Mike Lucero, Head of Product for Gaming at North America Service Business Team, Samsung Electronics. “With any leading Bluetooth-enabled gaming controller and internet connection, millions of players will be able to access an expansive library of games ranging from the best AAAs to the hottest indies and retro games directly through partner apps on select 2021 Smart TVs, making Samsung devices a preferred destination for game streaming.”

Once available, the individual gaming apps can be downloaded from the Samsung App Store via the Media Hub directly on the TV.

4K Games Available on Samsung Smart TVs via NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW

Rolling out in a few weeks, the offer will enable GeForce NOW players to stream PC games at up to 4K resolution at 60 frames per second natively in 2022 and select 2021 Samsung Smart TVs without waiting for downloads, installs, patches or updates. GeForce NOW premium membership is required for an enhanced experience including 4K resolution, faster frame rates, RTX ON, priority access to NVIDIA gaming servers and extended eight-hour session lengths.2

For more details on the Samsung Gaming Hub, please visit https://www.samsung.com/tvs/gaminghub.

Samsung Electronics and KDDI today announced that they have successfully completed a 5G test with real time transmission of 4K ultra-high-definition (UHD) surveillance video on a train platform, the first in Japan. Together with Waseda University, Keihin Corporation, and Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR), Samsung demonstrated effective communications through 4K UHD video using a 28GHz band 5G base station to enhance passenger safety in Tokyo.

The demonstration was conducted from November 21 to December 21, 2018 at the Haneda Airport International Terminal in Ota, Tokyo. As the number of incoming visitors is steadily increasing, Samsung and KDDI have been working on the real-world scenario, powered by 5G, to make their travels safer and more convenient.

“There was a specific need with this project to provide high quality video in a way that was robust enough to be relied upon on a busy transport network in Tokyo,” said Yoshiaki Uchida, Member of the Board, Executive Vice President at KDDI. “It was therefore imperative that we work with Samsung, a company we have an existing 5G relationship with, as well as other trusted partners to deliver a solution that will help the train system provide a better service in the 5G era.”

“When dealing with security solutions, there is little room for error, so we had to build a service that made the best use of the high speeds offered by 5G,” said Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun, Executive Vice President and Head of Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “Through our collaboration with KDDI, we showcased the potential for 5G technology to offer levels of quality and security that were previously unthinkable.”

Leveraging 5G has enabled the successful transmission of a large amount of video data, which used to be difficult to achieve through traditional mobile communications. Collecting and analyzing 4K UHD videos in real time will remove some of the burdens from the staff in charge of constantly monitoring footage. It will also aid them in detecting dangers in advance and improving overall safety.

During the demonstration, the video files collected from both 4K security cameras and security robots patrolling the station were sent via tablets using 5G. Then, the files were received by the base station to be displayed on the monitor and VR goggles in the monitoring room. Moreover, detecting any suspicious people or objects at the station was all possible through collecting and analyzing the received 4K files shown on the server.

Samsung’s 5G solutions were used to conduct the demonstration. KDDI was responsible for assessing and designing the 5G test environment at the train station, which was provided by Keikyu Corporation, while Waseda University provided the monitoring system, VR goggles and video evaluation.

Samsung Electronics and KDDI today announced the successful demonstration of their 5G capabilities by working with the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR) to deploy ultra-fast communications at Maehara Elementary School in Tokyo. For the first time in Japan, 5G was utilized to help students download contents in class using UHD, powered by the infrastructure of next-generation technologies.

The demonstration, made possible by Samsung’s 5G solutions, was conducted from November 21 to December 12, 2018 at the gym inside Maehara Elementary School. In order to showcase 5G capabilities, the gym was set up with Samsung’s 5G network using a 28GHz band to enable transmission of UHD videos in a school setting. The demo involved comparing the difference between 5G tablets and Wi-Fi tablets in their ability to download and play back videos.

During the demonstration, students were given a chance to create their own videos and experience high-speed and large capacity transmission of large video files. In doing so, they verified the capabilities of 5G for this type of use case. KDDI was responsible for assessing and designing the 5G areas used in the trial and ATR provided the testing infrastructure.

“We have been able to successfully demonstrate how 5G can reshape the future of education in Japan and beyond by building a live environment to showcase the concept,” said Yoshiaki Uchida, Member of the Board, Executive Vice President at KDDI. “Together with Samsung, our long-term partner in this space, we are delivering solutions that will enable innovative academic experiences in the classroom and support young people’s immersive learning for years to come.”

A 3D version of the Cinema LED Screen has been unveiled to the world. Samsung Electronics formally debuted its latest product at ISE (Integrated Systems Europe) 2018, the largest commercial display exhibition in Europe, which began on February 6 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. This is the second time that Samsung showcased a ‘first of its kind’ screen after its first-ever Cinema LED that made its first appearance last March.

Samsung Cinema LED Screen has been acclaimed for overcoming the limitations of existing film projectors in theaters. Viewers have praised the screen for making them feel as if they are watching a 3D film, with its crystal-clear 4K (4,096 x 2,160) resolution picture quality, infinite ‘true black’ HDR, and non-distorted visual imagery.

In less than a year, Samsung turned the viewers’ ‘feeling’ of watching a 3D film into a reality. The true 3D technology was incorporated into the Cinema LED Screen, which gives the ultimate 3- dimensional experience by utilizing the brightness and quality of Cinema LED as it is. Samsung Newsroom met with Dongsoo Koo, from Samsung Visual Display Division’s Enterprise Product Planning Group, who participated in the whole process of bringing the 3D Cinema LED into the world.

Dongsoo Koo, from Samsung’s Enterprise Product Planning Group

Long History of 3D Films that Began from the ‘Binocular Disparity’

“It is the movie ‘Avatar,’ the box office hit of 2009, that usually comes into people’s minds when thinking of 3D movies. However, 3D technology already existed in the 1890s. In fact, it was in 1832 when the physicist Charles Wheatstone first discovered the principle of 3D, which makes it a more than 180-year-old technology. During the 1950s, about 40 3D films were produced in Hollywood.”

The principle of a 3D video is quite simple. There’s a gap between our two eyes, the 65mm disparity between the right and left eye. This ‘binocular disparity’ adds three-dimensional sense to the visual information that our eyes receive. The mechanism of a 3D video is essentially the same. 3D cameras are mounted with two different lenses. For the visual information taken with the two lenses of a 3D camera to be delivered to our two eyes, there should be two screens, too. But since only one screen can be installed, we need a technology to realize 3D video on that screen. Halving the scanline1 to deliver the video to our two eyes respectively can be one way or making the two videos intersect with each other at an extremely high speed can be another.

To get a three-dimensional sense, you need separate visuals for each of the left and right eyes and realize the two scenes on a single screen.

Catching Both Birds: Brightness and Resolution

Likewise, there are various ways of realizing 3D on a screen. However, the number one priority in 3D Cinema LED development was that no matter which method is adopted, the best level resolution of Cinema LED Screen should be maintained. This was what kept Samsung up at night.

“The existing 3D cinemas had to compromise between brightness and resolution. The screen is dark as if the viewers are wearing sunglasses in the theater. The brightness is already halved, and with the 3D glasses that audience must wear, it becomes a one-third level compared to other 2D films. The resolution is halved too. It is inevitable as the videos for the left and right eye are overlapped and reflected.”

The evident limitation for existing 3D theater clearly revealed the path for 3D Cinema LED. “The brighter the visual information is, the more our eyes receive the three-dimensional impression. Therefore, we had to develop a new product that delivers the same brightness of Cinema LED, even while wearing the 3D glasses. We also could not sacrifice the resolution. It’s clear that lower resolution equals a lower sense of reality.”

It was not an easy goal. But Samsung’s know-how on 3D TV and the knowledge of Cinema LED created the synergy for the company to overcome the limitation on brightness and resolution of the existing 3D movie theaters’. 3D Cinema LED’s full and precise color refuses comparison any premium movie theaters.

Less Dizziness in 3D Film Experience

3D technology makes movies to be more immersive, but it can also cause inconveniences such as dizziness and headaches. The 3D Cinema LED screen has significantly improved dizziness that specifically involves 3D.

There are two reasons for the dizziness. The dizziness from the content itself occurs due to the mismatch between the reality and what our brain recognizes. That is, our body is sitting still but our brain thinks the body is moving. In addition, when we stare at a certain screen for more than two hours in a dark room, it is natural to develop a headache.

However, Koo proudly told that 3D Cinema LED has no degrading of brightness and improves the display-related dizziness by eliminating many of the triggering factors except those coming from the content itself. Therefore, the viewers experience less dizziness. “The left video should be seen only by the left eye and the right video only by the right eye. But there are moments when our eyes receive overlapped imagery. This is called ‘crosstalk,’ and the repetition of crosswalk causes the dizziness and headache. Fortunately, our developers came up with an algorithm for 3D Cinema LED to completely get rid of any crosstalk from happening, therefore dealing with the dizziness and headache issues.”

Mr. Koo (right) from Enterprise Product Planning Group and Sandy Kim (left) of Enterprise Marketing Group are introducing the advantages of 3D Cinema LED, which can be enjoyed with the highest picture quality without dizziness.

Less Distortion, No Matter Where You Sit in the Theater

The 3D Cinema LED has the same viewing angle as the Cinema LED. The 3D Cinema LED provides the opportunity to enjoy the film with less distortion no matter where the viewer is seated, just like the Cinema LED did. “When watching in the conventional 3D theater, the image becomes darker or distorted as people go to the edge of the theater, but 3D Cinema LED has significantly improved the problem.”

For theaters to be a space that continuously delivers new experiences, the 3D Cinema LED is expected to play a bigger role. “People say ‘Seeing is Believing.’ One might not believe until seeing something, but once seeing it, there’s no denial. I think this applies to 3D Cinema LED, too. Before experiencing it, some might doubt whether there is an actual difference. But once they experience the new technology of ours, people will believe and understand that it is totally different. This year’s ISE will be the first moment of that unique experience,” said Koo, adding that soon people will be able to enjoy the ultimate 3-dimensional experience through 3D Cinema LED Screen.

On July 13 in Seoul, Samsung unveiled the next evolution in theater technologies: the Cinema LED Screen, the world’s first LED theater display. The groundbreaking self-illuminating screen fosters realistic and engaging visuals projector-free, providing next-generation picture quality to offer moviegoers a much more immersive viewing experience.

Attendees at the Cinema LED Screen’s matinee unveiling, which featured clips from blockbuster films including “Transformers: The Last Knight” and “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” were instantly captivated by the all-new movie-viewing experience. As the famous Korean director Woo-suk Yang noted at the event, “Today marks a monumental moment in the history of movies.”

It’s all in the Details

The first thing that strikes you when you see the Cinema LED Screen in person is just how clear its picture is. The Cinema LED Screen’s ultra-sharp 4K (4,096 x 2,160) resolution and support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) content set a new standard in theater picture quality.

While the lenses of conventional projectors can struggle to accurately focus visuals across the entire screen, the Cinema LED Screen’s pixels produce crisp detail throughout.

When viewed on the huge LED screen, which measures 10.3m (33.8ft) wide, the Transformers’ world-famous transformations looked even more spectacular. The scratches on their armor, as well as the thousands of intricate components that form their towering figures, became crisp and clear, making their fights and movements more captivating, and allowing the characters to truly come to life.

Perfect Color Accuracy

The screen’s peak brightness level is nearly 10 times greater than those of conventional theater projectors, allowing the display to illuminate details that would go unnoticed on typical screens, while also providing true-to-life color accuracy.

Whereas typical projectors will lose color quality as brightness is increased, the Cinema LED Screen maintains perfect color accuracy at peak brightness levels. This allows for a much more vibrant and immersive viewing experience, as the characters and settings you see on the screen look exactly as they would if you were in the scene yourself. Sunrises come off as more striking and realistic, and characters appear even livelier.

“Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” is a particularly colorful film that’s full of Tim Burton’s trademark ‘colorful’ characters. When viewed in the clip, details such as nuances in the shadows of trees lining the home’s vibrant lawn, as well as the impeccably manicured grass, became vivid and vibrant.

Peerless Contrast

The screen’s ultra-contrast and low-tone grayscale settings add further clarity to content, making colors more gripping and producing pristine whites and the true blacks. The color of Miss Peregrine’s black dress was deep and bold because, with the Cinema LED Screen, viewers don’t see the ‘washed out’ black hues commonly produced by conventional theater displays.

This makes the screen ideal for films with dark, atmospheric scenes, as well as those set against the backdrop of the cosmos.

Exceptional Sound

The Cinema LED Screen’s superior theater experience extends beyond the confines of the display itself. The true-to-life visuals are complemented by likewise lifelike audio performance, courtesy of sound technologies from JBL by HARMAN.

The innovative audio configuration includes proprietary audio-processing technology, JBL’s Sculpted Surround system, and powerful speakers bordering the screen. The result is a sound setup that broadens a theater’s auditory ‘sweet spot’ to allow viewers in each and every row to experience crisp and balanced sound.

More than a Movie Screen

The Cinema LED Screen’s combination of superior sound and immersive visuals establishes a new paradigm not only for viewing films, but also for functions such as concerts, conferences, sporting events and gaming tournaments.

The display is equally adept at depicting immersive images in bright environments as it is in dark theaters, making it an ideal option for venues that are interested in using their theater space to meet a wider range of audience needs. To illustrate this versatility, Samsung showcased how the immersive display amps up the intensity of on-screen melee when playing the first-person shooter game “Titanfall 2.”

For filmmakers and moviegoers alike, Samsung’s Cinema LED Screen offers the purest, most immersive theater experience available today – one that portrays visuals and sound exactly as the content creators intended. Samsung’s current plans for the technology include launching Cinema LED theaters in the U.S., China, Europe and Southeast Asia. By 2020, Samsung’s goal is to install Cinema LED Screens in 10 percent of cinemas across the world, to introduce more viewers to the theater of the future.

In recent years, there have been huge advances in gaming. Console manufacturers are producing systems that support 4K graphics and High Dynamic Range (HDR), taking gaming to a new level. In line with this trend, TV makers have also been producing new TVs to come alongside these consoles in producing the crisp, bright and colorful images expected by gamers, and ultimately elevate the gaming experience.

Samsung Electronics’ new QLED TVs provide insight what makes for a great gaming TV, for example being free from the troublesome issue of image retention (commonly referred to as “burn-in”) which can occur after longtime game play. Here are the specific requirements that make for a great gaming TV:

Free from Image Retention (Burn-In)

One of the serious problems plaguing gamers is image retention. Image retention is a phenomenon that occurs when a static image gets imprinted on a TV screen after being displayed for an extended period. When this imprint becomes permanent, it is then referred to as “burn-in.” As a well-known consumer tech publication RTINGS has pointed out, it is a problem for gamers because they often have parts of the screen that are static, which are more likely to cause burn-in.

While image retention is not an issue for QLED TVs, OLED TVs where each pixel is individually controlled continue to suffer from the problem. Since a thread on OLED screen’s burn-in problem was posted on AVS Forum, an online community and platform focused on home-based audio and video entertainment, there were hundreds of postings actively discussing issues of image retention. For OLED, each pixel has different lifespans because they are lit individually. The longer the pixel is turned on, the shorter its lifespan, compromising the brightness of the light and causing part of the image to be retained.

Recently, articles, images, and videos on OLED TV burn-in are easily found on Google, AVS Forums and other online outlets.

High Peak Luminance

OLED TVs provide a high contrast due to their ability to render deep blacks in a dark room. However, while this quality may be an attractive option for watching movies in darkness, it is less of a concern for gamers. Unlike people who primarily use their TVs to watch movies, gamers tend to use their devices in rooms with some ambient lighting. QLED TVs on the other hand offer better performance in terms of peak luminance. Most OLED TVs offer peak luminance levels in the 600-700 nit range while QLEDs can get significantly brighter, with the latest models reaching 1500 nits and even 2000 nits.

Low Input Lag (Latency)

Input lag is the delay between performing an action (pressing a button or moving a joystick) to the intended affect occurring on screen. When measuring input lag, a high number means the more sluggish the game will feel, especially first-person shooter or racing games. Too much latency can literally kill your videogame character if the TV is too slow to process the action. Samsung QLED TVs consistently deliver the lowest input lag, with times measuring between 20ms and 25ms once Game mode has been engaged whereas current-generation OLEDs are hampered by high input lag when compared to QLED displays.

Enhanced Color Volume

Many video games are more colorful than movies, so gamers should look for TVs that can provide enhanced color volume for better picture quality. QLED TVs can provide higher levels of color saturation in highlights compared to OLED TVs. Samsung’s 2017 QLED TV unveiled at CES 2017 received verification from world-class testing and certification association, Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker (VDE), for its ability to produce 100 percent color volume, meaning it can capture even the subtlest differences in color pertaining to brightness.

Game-specific Optimization

Additionally, Samsung has also made it easier for users to activate Game Mode – a feature that optimizes image settings when connected to a PC or a game console by disabling the standard image processing the TV normally performs and allows the game itself to adjust the settings to provide the best picture for that game. Previously, Game Mode was buried deep in the user menu, making it difficult to activate. Samsung’s 2017 models have made it more accessible, placing it within the Picture menu.

At Samsung, we strive to deliver products that reflect a consumer’s lifestyle. For gamers, we are proud to create a variety of QLED TVs that meet their needs and provide crisp, bright and colorful images for the next generation of video games.

If you enjoy browsing the newest TVs when visiting your local big box store or are among the millions who subscribe to streaming movie and TV services, it’s very likely you’ve come across the term 4K HDR by now.

As definitions, 4K refers to a screen resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, or four times the level of full high definition (Full HD) at 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. HDR, which stands for high dynamic range, is a recently introduced technology that dramatically enhances contrast ratio (or how bright and dark a TV can get) as well as a TV’s ability to express many more brilliant colors to display content perfectly true-to-the-source. In fact, with the significant difference that HDR provides, many experts have taken to calling it the ‘future of TV’.

While both 4K and HDR are advancements in their own rights, combined together, 4K HDR content takes picture quality to a whole new level and is simply jaw dropping in terms of the utter realism, brilliant color, and immersive experience it provides. With no hyperbole intended, 4K HDR delivers a TV viewing experience which simply hasn’t been seen before.

Given the expectations for how 4K HDR will re-shape the industry, major content services like Amazon, Netflix, YouTube and others are already providing content in 4K HDR, with the number of titles expanding daily. New 4K HDR TVs and HDR media players are also being introduced to the market at a rapid pace.

Choosing the Right 4K HDR TV

In line with this trend, if you’re currently on the market for a new TV, it makes sense to consider one that is 4K HDR enabled. However, with people still learning about this new technology, how do you choose the ideal 4K HDR TV that will display 4K HDR content in the way it deserves?

The easiest way will be to look for the ULTRA HD PREMIUM logo which is issued by the UHD Alliance for products and services that meet or exceed strict performance levels for 4K resolution, HDR, and wide color spectrum.

To provide, however, further understanding of a TV able to do justice to 4K HDR content, it’ll be helpful to look at the example of Samsung’s new QLED TV. Introduced at this year’s CES, and quickly capturing industry attention, the new QLED TV provides insights into three key criteria when it comes to choosing the best 4K HDR TV for 4K HDR content:

What is the TV’s color volume?

Does the TV utilize advanced HDR (at least 1000nit image source)?

How is the TV’s brightness and contrast?

Let’s explore each of these criteria more deeply.

Key Criteria #1: Color Volume

To display 4K HDR content at its best, it’ll be important to become familiar with the concept of color volume, and to look for a TV that offers 100% color volume.

While Samsung Newsroom has covered color volume in-depth in a previous post, this exacting standard of color expression measures two elements of the TV with three-dimensional space – the color gamut and the brightness level. The color gamut looks at the amount of colors that can be displayed physically. The peak brightness represents the display’s maximum brightness level. The larger the color gamut and the higher the brightness, the bigger the color volume of the TV.

For its part, Samsung’s new QLED TV combines quantum dot light and RGB color for 100 percent color volume expression—the first TV to be validated as such by the world-class testing and certification association, Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker (VDE).

What this means for 4K HDR content is that Samsung QLED will display the content with absolutely precise color accuracy, as realistic as it gets, and exactly as the director intended.

Key Criteria #2: Advanced HDR Utilization

While HDR, as mentioned earlier, is a relatively recent advancement, it’s important to understand that there are already variations to this new technology in particular involving the nit level (or visible-light intensity) a particular HDR-type is able to capture.

When it comes to 4K HDR content, the key will be to keep in mind the requirement of 1000nit. In short, a TV that cannot capture a 1000nit image source will not be able to depict content, particularly 4K HDR, completely true-to-the-source.

Different from other sets being introduced to the market, Samsung took the initiative to integrate HDR capabilities able to express a peak brightness of up to 1500-2000nit (surpassing the 1000nit requirement) into its QLED TV. Samsung QLED TV’s advanced HDR capability ensures it is able to depict 4K HDR content with perfect true-to-the-source accuracy, just as the directors intended.

Advanced HDR technology expresses every detail just as the director intended

Key Criteria #3: Brightness and Contrast

The final criteria to consider in choosing the ideal 4K HDR TV is the TV’s brightness and contrast, specifically the peak levels of brightness the TV is able to achieve. In addition to deep blacks, many experts consider a TV’s brightness levels to be key to outstanding picture quality given the significant difference of varying brightness levels to the human eye. Brightness is also critical given the different lighting conditions of many home and other environments, and will be a decisive factor in ensuring that 4K HDR content is getting the best expression possible.

Samsung’s new QLED TV utilizes 32 precision brightness block adjusters, to automatically adjust the brightness level block by block, making dark images appear darker and bright images appear brighter.

Samsung QLED TV’s brilliant light source, based on quantum dot, also helps it produce exceptional brightness and contrast in any setting ensuring 4K HDR content will get the play it deserves in diverse home and other environments.

As the year continues, it’s no doubt you’ll be hearing much more about 4K HDR – from new content and titles to TV and media hardware. The dawning of the 4K HDR era promises to be an exciting one, and we hope you stay tuned as Samsung continues to introduce further innovations in this area.

Samsung Electronics today announced that it will support YouTube’s global HDR playback on television for the first time, through an expanded version of the YouTube application. The YouTube Application is available on all 2016 Samsung Quantum dot TVs and UHD TVs and will launch progressively throughout the world from December.

YouTube will support High Dynamic Range (HDR) video streaming, offering a wide range of HDR content. Launched through an automatic software update, consumers who use all 2016 Samsung Quantum dot TV and UHD TVs can access HDR content simply by visiting the HDR category within the YouTube application on YouTube’s 4K channel, providing an easy way to navigate and enjoy premium content.

“With the global availability of YouTube’s HDR, we at Samsung are thrilled to support the best HDR viewing experience and a wide range of HDR content for users to enjoy,” said Seline Han, Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “We are confident that our TVs will bring to life an immersive HDR viewing experience — all from the comfort of our users’ homes.”

To coincide with the launch, the YouTube application will feature new HDR videos from popular YouTube content creators, such as MysteryGuitarMan and Jacob + Katie Schwarz. To ensure the proliferation of new HDR content, additional YouTube creators will be able to utilize the YouTube Spaces LA and NYC, which provide HDR production resources to content creators.

With a growing number of HDR content providers, as well as the numerous creators already producing HDR video content, YouTube’s HDR support is expected to introduce more genre offerings in the coming year and satisfy user demand for a true-to-life viewing experience on the content they enjoy the most.

“We are thrilled to announce the launch of HDR support on Samsung’s Quantum dot TVs,” said Heather Thompson Rivera, Director of Product Partnerships at YouTube. “By combining Samsung’s commitment to picture quality and our desire to offer the best content available, we will work together to build a strong ecosystem that improves HDR content creation and allows users to enjoy more diverse content in the best quality possible.”

Emerging as one of the most sought after display technologies in the last few years, HDR is an image reproduction technology that analyzes the contrast ratio of a video to help express even the most subtle differences in shades and tones of color. Paired with Samsung’s Quantum dot TV, the picture that is produced appears more realistic and life-like on screen. In addition, Samsung’s Quantum dot TVs have the capacity to generate peak brightness of 1,000 nits, optimized for the most ideal HDR viewing experience.

The evolution of telecommunications technology, from 1G networks to our current 4G standard, has utterly transformed how we share and consume information. Now, through pioneering research in the field and exciting core innovations such as adaptive beamforming technology, Samsung Electronics is bringing us ever closer to opening entirely new paradigms of connectivity through 5G.

By utilizing ultra-high broadcast frequencies, 5G will deliver data transfer speeds that are up to 200 times faster than current 4G networks, even in highly dense locations. This will allow us to create more responsive user experiences across a more diverse range of devices and technologies, including those which have not yet leveraged wireless connectivity.

For a start, 5G will make it possible for users to enjoy rich 4K video and more immersive virtual and augmented reality experiences. Imagine being able to take in a front-row concert experience from the comfort of your living room, spark your child’s curiosity with immersive augmented reality edutainment, or simply conference with colleagues through crystal clear video. 5G technology makes it possible to seamlessly facilitate such data-heavy tasks while also opening the door for greater automation in more aspects of daily life, allowing us to streamline everything from the Internet of Things (IoT) and self-driving cars to robotics.

Drawing from expertise gained from more than 30 years of experience in the telecommunications field, Samsung first started developing 5G-related technologies in 2011. By ushering in the 5G era, leading research to advance its commercialization and explore its applications in communications and IoT, Samsung is helping create a world where imagination can become a reality.

In a recent report, DisplayMate Technologies, the leading evaluator of video screens, announced the results of a new series of comprehensive lab tests on the Galaxy Note7’s display. DisplayMate President Dr. Raymond M. Soneira noted, “The Galaxy Note7 provides many major and important state-of-the-art display enhancements. It is the most innovative and high performance Smartphone display that we have ever tested.”

Which factors earned the Galaxy Note7’s display its top marks? Find out below.

As the first smartphone to incorporate High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology for mobile video streaming, the Galaxy Note7 provides a cinema-like viewing experience. HDR, the newest performance enhancement feature developed for the latest 4K Ultra HDTVs, expands the color, contrast and brightness of video content through special image processing.

To display the latest high-end video content, the Galaxy Note7 was equipped with the newest standard Wide Color Gamut called DCI-P3 for Digital Cinema Initiative. The measured color gamut of the AMOLED Cinema screen mode is a very accurate 97 percent of the standard DCI-P3 color gamut. It also received a very accurate Absolute Color Accuracy measurement of 2.8 JNCD.

The Galaxy Note7 boasts a record high peak brightness (automatic brightness) of 1,048 nits in high ambient light conditions and a screen reflectance level of 4.6 percent. This means that the screen of the Galaxy Note7 can easily be viewed or read, even under relatively high ambient lighting, such as bright sunlight, which washes out the image color saturation and contrast, decreasing picture quality.

In line with its automatic brightness improvements, the Galaxy Note7 received praise from DisplayMate for being the first of its kind to incorporate a second, rear ambient light sensor. This sensor measures surrounding ambient light and then uses the measured value, along with that of the front ambient light sensor, to alter the display brightness accordingly. The additional sensor helps the device to obtain an accurate reading of the true ambient light level, even when the phone is held in the user’s shadow.

DisplayMate also made note of the Galaxy Note7’s new Blue Light Filter that allows the user to adjust and reduce the amount of blue light from the display for better night viewing, “which some recent research indicates can affect how well users sleep afterwards.”

Featuring curved screen OLED display, the Galaxy Note7 will be available for purchase starting August 19.

Samsung Electronics America, the leader in home entertainment for over 10 years, announced the availability and pricing for its 2016 line up, including an entirely new Flagship model series – the KS9800, bringing a new meaning to Smart TV.

“Samsung has always been about the ultimate experience in Picture Quality. This year is no different. Our new SUHD models provide the brightest, most realistic color and clarity for every viewing environment,” said Dave Das, Senior Vice President, Samsung Electronics America. “What is new this year is our redefined Smart TV experience. We listened to our customers and made enjoying content the easiest it’s ever been.”

Experience the Excellence

Whether it’s SUHD, UHD or LED, Samsung delivers the brightest, most stunning picture quality, with richer colors and more dynamic audio than ever before.

Samsung’s SUHD TVs feature the world’s only cadmium-free 10 bit Quantum Dot Display, setting the quality standard of 1,000-nit HDR with the best and most vibrant color and contrast available for true-to-life picture and experience. The Ultra Black feature reduces reflections by absorbing light to help provide for deeper, richer blacks. This year’s Samsung SUHD line up meets the UHD-A’s Premium UHD certification program, which ensures consumers are getting the most premium experience from their UHD TV.

2016 SUHD TV – KS9500

Breathtaking Design

From curved and slim to the new boundless design edge, Samsung offers stunning design with optimum viewing. The new KS9500 features an immersive ‘360’ design that is elegant and looks beautiful from every angle.

Smart Just Got a Whole Lot Smarter

Samsung’s 2016 Smart Hub Interface takes simplicity to the next level. The new Smart Hub Interface eliminates a lengthy setup process by automatically integrating set top boxes from cable providers like Time Warner, Comcast (coming soon), and satellite services such as DIRECTV (coming in June), as well as game consoles. Users can simply plug the STB into any HDMI port, and the TV will recognize the box and provider, as well as automatically set up the remote control to access and control the STB features – not just channel up and down, but DVR controls and other commonly used controls – without the user ever having to program or “teach” the remote. It’s the ultimate in simplicity.

It doesn’t end there. Now users can see and access their favorite content along the Smart Hub menu bar – not just the content provider’s logo, but actual programming. Scrolling across will bring up customized sources including streaming, Blu Ray, gaming, cable, and more, allowing users to “surf content” as though they were channel surfing. In most cases it doesn’t even require a log-in. If a user pauses a streaming program and exits to check the news, when they go back, the program is still right where they left off – no need to log-in and go deep into the app anymore.

It’s smart and seamless.

The purest UHD content with HDR available today

Samsung is the leader in providing customers with access to the most premium content. Whether it’s via streaming services, download services or over the air, it’s content at its best. Now Samsung is uniquely positioned to offer UHD HDR content in its purest form – Ultra HD Blu Ray. Customers can connect the K8500 Ultra HD Blu Ray to any SUHD via HDMI and enjoy the latest UHD HDR content from Hollywood Studios such as Fox and Warner Brothers.

The UBD-K8500 supports backward compatibility, upscaling existing 3D Blu Ray, Blu Ray to near-UHD quality. The player can also handle the next generation of home audio formats, including immersive, object-based sound formats like Dolby Atmos and multi-channel systems.

The 2016 Line

For 2016, Samsung offers breathtaking design and unparalleled excellence with its new line of TVs, including a series of five Curved SUHD TVs and a series of five UHD TVs that vary in display size from 49” to 88”. Ranging from the popular curved form to the traditional flat-panel, Samsung provides consumers with sleek appeal, the most exceptional picture quality and smartest TVs.

Samsung’s KS9800 SUHD TV – Delivers unparalleled and improved picture quality, spectacular color, as well as increased brightness and contrast. With the world’s only cadmium-free, 10-bit Quantum Dot display, the new SUHD TV can serve up to one billion colors in detail, delivering the most incredible color expression for the ultimate viewing experience. The smart experience just got smarter with the KS9800 – featuring Samsung’s new Smart Hub, discovering content has become easier and more intuitive than ever with a new simple and fast interface to quickly access everything from live TV to online video, all in one place. The new 2016 Smart Hub allows users to see their favorite content options at a glance by integrating set-top-box and VOD content experiences directly into the TV user interface.
At CES 2016, Samsung Electronics, Sinclair Broadcast Group, ONE Media, Pearl TV and TeamCast are demonstrating the broadcast and receiving capabilities of ATSC 3.0, the cutting-edge terrestrial TV standard. The demonstration includes reception of Ultra High Definition (UHD) High Dynamic Range (HDR) 4K content using ATSC 3.0 in a live transmission originating from a local broadcast TV station to a Samsung S-UHD TV with ATSC 3.0 receiver at the Samsung Electronics booth in the Las Vegas Convention Center. This demonstration is a product of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in June 2015 by Samsung, Sinclair and the Pearl TV partnership.

The over-the-air TV signal is radiated from a transmitter at Sinclair’s facility on Black Mountain near Las Vegas. With the help of Acrodyne Services and TeamCast, Sinclair converted a standby station transmission system using the exTra3.0, the very first ATSC 3.0 real-time exciter available today on the market and designed by TeamCast.

John Godfrey, Senior Vice President, Public Policy, Samsung Electronics America said, “Samsung is leading the world with the best UHD HDR TVs and continues to be at the forefront of ATSC 3.0. We are excited that almost all parts of the standard have reached Candidate Standard status. ATSC 3.0 will give TV broadcasters the ability to utilize and participate in the dazzling UHD and HDR 4K ecosystem.”

“Enhancing our core television business with stunning content will attract more viewers and advertisers. Adding new capabilities will drive value and enhance revenue opportunities across our broadcast infrastructure,” said Sinclair’s Mark Aitken, Vice President of Advanced Technology.

“ATSC 3.0 provides the opportunity for NextGen TV to transform the broadcast landscape,” said ONE Media’s EVP of Strategic Development and CTO, Kevin Gage. “We are only just beginning to scratch the surface of new B2B and B2C services that the NextGen broadcast platform will enable.”

“Next-generation television is one step closer to reality with the incredible over-the-air demonstration of High Dynamic Range delivered with an ATSC 3.0 transmission from Sinclair’s Las Vegas station. We salute Samsung for showing CES attendees how the future of TV will be even bigger, better, and more immersive,” said Pearl TV Managing Director, Anne Schelle.

Eric Pinson, Business Unit Manager, TeamCast said, “We are proud to contribute to this incredible over-the-air demo and to illustrate in real operation our new exTra3.0 exciter. The exTra3.0 has been especially designed to meet broadcaster’s demand for early testing of this new ATSC 3.0 technology during the standard finalization period.”

4K SUHD TV of Samsung Electronics

While 4K UHD TVs have four times more clarity than standard Full HD and is growing quickly in the global TV market, RGBW TVs are also appearing in the market and have a lower picture quality – in both pixel quantity and quality – than 4K UHD TVs . When the products are displayed alongside 4K UHD TVs in stores, consumers should be aware of what makes the 4K UHD TVs a better purchase option: the highest picture quality available.

A Difference in Pixels

UHD TVs, also known as 4K, have approximately 8 million (3,840×2,160) pixels, four times the amount of pixels in Full HD TVs (approx. 2 million pixels, 1,920×1,080). This allows 4K TVs to display the same image with even more detail and clarity. However, what happens when the number of pixels is reduced?

If the number of pixel increases from 2 million to 8 million within the same size TV, the size of the pixels have to be smaller in order to display even more vivid details. On the other hand, if the number of pixels decreases, the display projects lower resolution as a result.

RGBW TVs utilize a pixel structure called RGBW (or WRGB), which differs from the RGB structure that 4K UHD TVs employ. This method converts some of the RGB sub-pixels to white (W) light, reducing the number of the pixels that can actually produce colors by 25 percent. This equates to a lower quality, less detailed picture on the screen.

Looking at the International Standards

According to international standard organizations such as ITU, ICDM (formerly known as VESA) and ISO, one pixel – the smallest unit that produces colors on display – must be square-shaped with a width and height ratio of 1:1, to be capable of expressing the full range of colors.

In the case of RGBW TVs, pixels are square shaped, binding three sub-pixels together to make up a pixel such as BWR and GBW. With this process, however, 75 percent of the total pixels are left with imperfect color structure. For example, BWR pixels cannot express the color green, meaning these TVs do not satisfy the international standard definition of a pixel.

In order to provide consumers with accurate product information, CEA and DE- IT organizations in the US and Europe- have started a 4K UHD logo program. Only TVs that meet the strict UHD definition and requirements are allowed to use a 4K UHD logo from CEA and DE on all marketing materials including packaging. As a result, RGBW TVs cannot qualify for a logo, as they do not satisfy the definitions of 4K UHD. All of the Samsung’s 2015 UHD TVs qualify for CEA and DE’s 4K UHD logo program.

Behind the Strict Standards

The reason why international standard organizations are so strict about the definition of a pixel is due to pixels having a large impact on a TV’s picture quality. For 4K UHD TVs, which employ RGB pixel structure, all pixels are aligned in order throughout the horizontal (3,840) and vertical (2,160) dimensions. However, RGBW TVs have lower picture quality since the white lights (in RGBW) cannot produce any colors, leaving the color of pixels unmatched between the lines.

According to a study conducted by the Norwegian test agency Nemko, which investigated how thin stripes of red, green and blue colors are expressed on displays, RGBW TVs produced tile-patterned images while 4K TVs produced clean, sharp lines. To ensure a quality picture standard across the industry, these organizations established strict definitions of pixels.

4K SUHD TV of Samsung Electronics

Picture Quality Determines the Value of the TV

Samsung Electronics commissioned testing agencies such as VDE and Nemko for picture quality comparison tests based on international standards between 4K UHD TVs and RGBW TVs. The results from the testing agencies showed that the resolution of RGBW TVs falls short compared to that of 4K UHD TVs.

Intertek and UL (Underwriters Laboratories) also published test reports on a Samsung TV product, using two TVs. One TV was equipped with an RGB panel and a second, the test model, was equipped with an RGBW panel.

Intertek concluded that “the addressable resolution of RGB type is 3,840 x 2,160 for each red, green blue.” Regarding the RGBW TV, Intertek concluded that “the addressable resolution display is 2,880 X 2,160 for each red, green, blue” (Based on international standard ISO9241-305 6.9.9 and CEA UHD, DE UHD pixel definition.)

In addition, UL’s test validated that “the total number of pixels of RGB stripe type is 8.3 mega pixel, while RGBW type is 6.2 mega pixel.” (Based on international standard ISO9241-305 pixel size and pitch from artwork.)

Despite such reports, RGBW TVs are still being displayed as having the same technology 4K TVs in retail stores. There are also reports by other testing agencies noting that RGBW panels meet international standards. This was determined by selectively choosing particular resolution tests using only the black-and-white pattern. This is problematic for consumers who are planning to purchase a new 4K UHD TV.

Samsung Electronics has led the global TV market for nearly ten years based on the philosophy that the very basics of a TV is the ability to offer the best picture quality possible to viewers. This belief will be held as the highest value for Samsung TVs, even when future technologies evolve – from 4K, 8K and beyond.

For a sports fan, there is nothing quite like being there. But unless you paid for some of the best seats in the house, most sports fans get a better view of the action from the comfort of their own home. Not to mention, the beer and food is cheaper and your living room couch is undoubtedly more comfortable than the outfield bleachers.

In fact, the experience of staying home to watch the big game has never been better. Not only do fans have access to more channels airing live sports than ever before, the production and presentation of broadcasts have made the experience more immersive than ever. The final piece of the equation is Samsung’s modern televisions, which are bigger and more technologically advanced than ever.

The broadcast rights for the world’s top sports leagues and events are seen as more lucrative than ever, and are hotly pursued by an increasing number of sports networks. This in turn has spurned advancements in broadcast technology as networks make efforts to improve the viewing experience and bring fans closer to the action with more camera angles, better sound and more viewing options.

Samsung’s latest 4K SUHD televisions are bigger, more powerful and more sophisticated than ever before, and the exceptional colors and sharper resolution are perhaps best illustrated with sports content. The exceptional refresh rate and contrast allow the viewer to see the spin on a soccer ball, the individual seams on a baseball as it leaves the pitcher’s hand, and the look of elation on the face of the running back as he plunges into the end zone. And for a sport like ice hockey, in which a 3-inch, black disk whizzes across the playing surface at up to 140km per hour, advancements in TV technology have made a profound impact on the viewer’s ability to follow the play.

Sports Mode

Samsung has also added features to its Smart TVs that further improves the viewing experience for sports fans. Sports Mode optimizes the picture by enhancing the vividness and sharpness of the playing field. Stadium Sound makes it feel like you are sitting in the crowd and watching the game. Samsung has created specialized sport-specific modes such as Soccer Mode, Hockey Mode and Cricket Mode, which are available in countries where those sports are popular.

In a world where users increasingly want their content on-demand, what really sets sports apart from other types of content, is that people must watch it live. Any sports fan would attest that watching the game when you already know the result takes a lot of enjoyment and suspense out of the experience, and trying to avoid spoilers can be very stressful. This is one of the major reasons why sports broadcasting rights have become so lucrative in recent years – they are DVR-proof, and thus, viewers are more likely to watch the ads. However, that does not mean that viewers don’t benefit from a variety of DVR features offered by Samsung’s Smart TVs.

With Soccer Mode, the user can record game highlights manually or use the auto-highlighting feature, which analyzes the picture and sounds, including the game commentators and the scoreboard, to automatically save the game’s big moments. Smart TV will allow you to split the screen, so you can watch live action on the left and go back to check out highlights on the right.

Sports on the Go

Major sports leagues are providing services for users who want to watch live content on their mobile devices. The NBA League Pass allows subscribers to watch every NBA game live or on-demand in HD on any device. Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and Note 4 both have powerful Quad HD Super AMOLED displays that make the experience of watching live sports on a mobile device better than ever.

As major European and North American sports leagues expand their reach around the globe, many sports fans now have access to the mobile devices, content services and the super-fast mobile networks that will allow them to watch live events while on the go, especially when time zones are an issue.

In addition, Samsung Smart TVs make it easy to share content from your smartphone to the TV, or from your TV to your smartphone. So if the game is on but you need to move to another room in the house, you can easily switch to your phone with one click.

In this new era of sports content, fans are well served by the Smart TVs and mobile devices offered by Samsung Electronics.
