A Smarter Way To Manage Food, Home, Family Communication and Entertainment

Samsung’s new refrigerators incorporate the intuitive 9” AI Home screen and 32” or 21.5” Family Hub screens, which are designed to enhance four key areas of daily life: Food, Home, Family Communication and Entertainment. The first category, food, is especially powered by the upgraded AI Vision Inside, which adds four more food items to the list of recognizable types for a total of 37. Furthermore, adding on to fresh food items, AI Vision Inside can now also recognize processed food items. Refrigerators with the enhanced AI Vision Inside will recognize and recommend users to save processed food items that have been placed inside multiple times, allowing up to 50 items to be saved with designated names.³ Based on the improved food list, the screen will provide tailored recipe recommendations and meal planning,⁴ making home cooking more seamless and personalized.

Beyond food, the screens also enhance smart home connectivity. The latest advancements provide deeper integration into the smart home ecosystem, making the refrigerator a central hub capable of controlling connected appliances throughout the entire home. With the integration of Map View, users can monitor and control Samsung appliances and even third-party smart home devices⁵ like lights and smart plugs. There’s also SmartThings Energy,⁶ which helps users track and optimize their energy consumption, facilitating greater efficiency in everyday life. The intuitive display provides users with access to a great deal of information about their home, with users also being able to issue voice commands through Bixby.⁷

The new Daily Board feature keeps everyone informed and connected. Placed at the heart of the home, the refrigerator screen delivers real-time updates throughout the day — whether it’s the morning weather and schedule before heading to work, or daily energy consumption reports in the evening. Users can also easily access their schedules through voice commands and receive tailored responses. By recognizing each family member’s voice and replying accordingly, Bixby will serve as both a helpful assistant for the entire household and for each person individually.⁸ Additional family-focused features include a shared gallery for storing precious memories and a calendar to help with daily planning.

Samsung’s latest refrigerators also redefine entertainment in the kitchen, allowing users to stay engaged while cooking or spending time with family. With Spotify integration, users can listen to their favorite music or podcasts directly from their fridge.⁹ SmartView Mirroring enables seamless screen sharing from smartphones or Samsung TVs, and the dedicated gallery feature lets families display their favorite photos, adding a personal touch to the kitchen.

The Next Generation of Refrigeration

The 4-Door Refrigerator is designed to meet the needs of modern households with its innovative features.¹⁰ The 9” AI Home applied on select models allows the refrigerator to integrate seamlessly with the smart home ecosystem. Models that incorporate Hybrid Cooling technology¹¹ keep produce fresh for even longer, while also allowing extra space¹² by utilizing a peltier module that is compact in size for cooling. By utilizing the conventional compressor and the Peltier module together, AI Hybrid Cooling is capable of providing additional cooling whenever necessary, such as when the internal temperature increases or when AI predicts a potential rise.¹³ When users put in a large amount of groceries after shopping or open the door multiple times in the summer, the Peltier module will assist the compressor to maintain a consistent internal temperature.

The 4-Door Refrigerator also comes in Kitchen Fit design, allowing agile installation that requires only a tiny gap of just 4mm from the sides and 20mm from the top. Also, the refrigerator’s doors have been enhanced with SpaceMax insulation technology that uses less amount of high-efficiency insulation, increasing the space in the doors by 56% compared to previous models equaling 10L in capacity.¹⁴ Users can also enjoy convenience with the wide opening door that opens more than 90 degrees, and the food showcase to store frequently used items.

The 4-Door French Door Refrigerator, launching in North America, is available in various configurations, including a 32” Family Hub and a 9” AI Home. This flexibility allows users to choose the best fit for their kitchen. The Auto Open Door¹⁵ feature ensures hassle-free accessibility with just a gentle tap, making it accessible to everyone in all kinds of situations to effortlessly access the inside of the fridge. It also has a Beverage Center that includes a water dispenser and a 1.4L Auto-Fill Water Pitcher that is dishwasher safe¹⁶ and BPA free.¹⁷ Apart from ensuring that fresh, filtered water is always available, the pitcher also allows users to infuse their water with fruits and herbs.

The Side-by-Side Refrigerator also offers multiple screen options, including the 21.5” Family Hub and 9” AI Home.¹⁸ The model, featuring an Auto Open Door that opens up widely makes it simpler to reach stored items,¹⁹ is designed for users who prioritize easy access and organization. Select European models are equipped with Hybrid Cooling technology — as seen in the 4-Door refrigerator — to maintain freshness by preventing temperature fluctuations.

All three types of refrigerators come with the AI Energy Mode feature, allowing users to reduce energy consumption by up to an additional 10%.²⁰ Users can choose to activate the mode always or when electricity bills are expected to exceed the preset target.

With these latest innovative solutions, Samsung continues to push the boundaries of the connected kitchen, transforming the refrigerator into an intelligent hub that enhances food management, smart home integration and entertainment. New Functionalities Alter Kitchen Experiences

The Smart Forward updates introduce an array of new functionalities designed to enhance the user experience and appliance performance. The Family Hub, a touch screen panel installed on the 4-Door French Door Refrigerator⁴ for food management, entertainment and communication, will now come with Quick Share, Buds Auto Switch⁵ and Fridge Call, new features that significantly improve connectivity and usability.⁶

Quick Share makes sharing memories and recipes while in the kitchen easier than ever by allowing users to quickly send photos to the Family Hub screen directly from their mobile device⁷ with just a few clicks. When users have their Galaxy Buds connected to the Family Hub to listen to music or watch cooking tutorial videos, the Buds Auto Switch feature allows users to seamlessly switch to their mobile device to answer incoming calls and back when the call is finished, enabling a cooking experience free from interruptions.

Finally, users can receive phone calls with Fridge Call directly on the Family Hub using its microphone and speaker, eliminating the need to move to a different room to find their phone. This is especially convenient when users’ hands are occupied to cooking, cleaning and dishwashing, making it much easier to multitask while remaining connected. Perhaps best of all, these new features will be available on refrigerator models with Family Hub produced from 2017 onward rather than new models only.

Quick Remote,⁸ an additional feature in which a user’s mobile phone becomes a remote control for connected Samsung appliances, is being expanded across refrigerators produced since 2023, regardless of whether they include a Family Hub screen or not.⁹ Other connected appliances include washing machines and air conditioners also produced since 2023.¹⁰ All users need to do is simply move close to a SmartThings-connected appliance,¹¹ and a remote control menu for the appliance will appear on the quick panel of the Galaxy phone screen being used. This seamless integration ensures that users can control their home environment with ease.

Future-Proofing Home Appliances to the Next Level

Apart from making the user experience more seamless, Samsung is also focused on future-proofing existing appliances. The upgraded Bixby¹² will understand commands with multiple intentions and remember the most recent conversation.¹³ This advanced functionality transforms the way users interact with their appliances, making voice commands more intuitive and responsive.¹⁴ Samsung is providing the update to five products launched in 2024 first: the Bespoke 4-Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub; Bespoke AI Laundry Combo; Bespoke Slide-in Range; Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI; and Bespoke AI WindFree Gallery Freestanding Air Conditioner (Sold in Korea only).

Additionally, Bixby now opens doors for 2024 refrigerators with Family Hub upon verbal request, without the need for wake-up commands like “Hi Bixby.” Users can simply say, “Open the refrigerator door.” This functionality offers users an unparalleled level of convenience and hands-free operation.¹⁵ Plus, for refrigerators with Family Hub launched in Korea and the U.S. after 2022, a new wallpaper feature will allow users to create custom wallpapers for the fridge’s screen, adding a personalized touch to their kitchen space.¹⁶

Safer Use and Lower Energy Consumption

In terms of safety and energy-savings, Samsung is rolling out updates to older models — including refrigerators made as far back as 2021 — because the importance of safety does not diminish with time.¹⁷ After an event of a power outage and once resumed with power, refrigerators will detect and notify users via the SmartThings app when internal temperature is high, providing an extra layer of food safety by making users aware of potential issues that could affect the freshness of their stored food.

Additionally, users can now choose different chimes for open door notifications, giving them greater control over their appliance settings. Furthermore, users can maintain a peaceful home environment by putting ice makers in sleep mode, preventing them from working during the night and creating the disruptive sound of ice falling into the tray while users sleep.

Optimal Scheduling, which delays the start of appliances to not have them run during peak energy usage hours or periods of high carbon intensity, will also be added to the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo¹⁸ and Samsung Dishwashers.¹⁹ This feature can help users cut down on energy cost. Additionally, the 7-inch AI Home on the Bespoke AI Laundry Combo now automatically switches to power-save mode during wash cycles, further contributing to smart energy savings.²⁰

These updates reflect Samsung’s broader strategy of providing value to customers by enhancing the products they already own. By continuously improving the functionality and performance of its appliances, Samsung ensures that users do not have to worry about their devices becoming obsolete. This approach not only safeguards customers’ investments but also aligns with the company’s efforts to reduce the need for frequent replacements.

Samsung’s updated home appliances will be showcased at IFA 2024 in Berlin, Germany, from September 6 to 10, where visitors will be able to see and experience each feature.

Bespoke 4-Door Flex With Family Hub+ Brings Bigger Display and Better Connectivity

The new Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with Family Hub+ introduces powerful Family Hub features to a 4-door Bespoke design, combining an all-in-one communication and entertainment hub with an impressively large display.

The Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with Family Hub+’s dynamic features are showcased on its 32-inch, bezel-less FHD screen that is nearly two times larger than that of previous models. In addition, the new larger dashboard takes advantage of the bigger screen, allowing users to conveniently experience SmartThings services as well as monitor and control their compatible home appliances.

The refrigerator also features new Family Hub software. Samsung TV Plus¹ now offers more than 190 free channels,² while Google Photos integration transforms the platform into a digital photo frame that makes it easy to share and display photos. Thanks to the larger screen space and Samsung TV Plus’s new picture-in-picture (PIP) feature, users can catch up on their favorite TV shows while checking and monitoring the status of other kitchen appliances while keeping an eye on what they are cooking at the same time.

The Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with Family Hub+ is set to launch in North America and Korea in the first half of 2023. In addition, a Family Hub software update will roll out to all markets where Family Hub refrigerators are sold in 2023. This includes Korea, the U.S., East and West Asia, Latin America and Europe.

Bespoke Expands To Include Popular Side-By-Side and Top-Mounted Freezer Refrigerator Models To Provide Even More Customization in the Kitchen

In keeping with the Bespoke design aesthetic, the Bespoke Side-by-Side refrigerator features a flat, minimalist design with a customizable front panel available in both glass and stainless-steel finishes. Users have the option to choose from a wide range of door colors³ and finishes to harmonize their refrigerator with their home décor. The fridge’s sleek design is completed by Auto Open Door,⁴ featuring a recessed handle for a streamlined design and easy opening via a tap that releases the door.

Inside, the Bespoke Side-by-Side Refrigerator features the latest in food storage and cooling technologies. The internal Beverage Center provides easy access to the Plumbing Water Dispenser and AutoFill Water Pitcher with Infuser, providing you with cold or naturally flavored water⁵ at any time. Meanwhile, the Dual Auto Ice Maker is always ready to chill users’ drinks with Cubed Ice or Ice Bites.

Like the Bespoke Side-by-Side Refrigerator, the Bespoke Top-Mounted Freezer Refrigerator is available in stylish colors that seamlessly blend with contemporary kitchen interiors. Inside, Samsung’s Optimal Fresh Zone+ and Active Fresh Filter keep food fresh for long while eliminating 99.99% of bacteria.⁶ Users of Samsung’s Bespoke Side-by-Side or Top-Mounted Freezer Refrigerator can also enjoy added energy savings through SmartThings Energy’s AI Energy Mode. The Bespoke AI Oven¹⁰ makes meal prep a breeze, combining powerful intelligence with innovative cooking technologies to produce delicious meals that cater to users’ dietary preferences.

AI Pro Cooking optimizes cooking settings while monitoring food. If the oven is set to cook a recognized dish using the cooking mode, temperature and time the oven recommends, the AI Pro Cooking system will even send users food warning notifications to prevent burning.¹¹ Using an internal camera and powerful AI,¹² the oven’s Sense Inside¹³ feature — the first food recognition and burn detection¹⁴ AI algorithm of its kind to receive an AI cooking appliance verification by UL Solutions — can recommend cooking settings by recognizing 80 different dishes and ingredients.¹⁵

SmartThings Cooking⁸ is a cooking service that does it all, from finding recipes and auto-setting appliances to managing shopping lists and preserving food.⁹ Powered by Whisk’s Food AI, SmartThings Cooking recommends personalized recipes and meal plans based on users’ tastes, dietary needs and groceries on hand. Whether users are defrosting frozen meats with a barcode or shopping for groceries through the Whisk network,¹⁰ SmartThings Cooking communicates directly with all of Samsung’s smart kitchen appliances,¹¹ like Family Hub, ranges, ovens and cooktops for a seamless cooking experience.

SmartThings Energy

Supporting virtually all products¹² throughout the kitchen, living and laundry areas, SmartThings Energy empowers users to take control of their energy consumption by providing real-time information on where and how energy is used within the home. By analyzing the energy used by devices and appliances connected to the SmartThings platform, SmartThings Energy reports monthly power usage and predicts future power consumption using AI. Thanks to AI Saving mode,¹³ SmartThings Energy will also automatically turn on the energy saving mode on connected home devices, helping to reduce energy bills and carbon footprint. The new Bespoke AI washer and dryer¹⁴ will soon be added to SmartThings Energy’s lineup of devices in the second half of this year, before expanding to even more connected devices around your home. Samsung’s Zero Energy Home pilot project, developed in collaboration with Q-CELLS to give homes the ability to be energy self-sufficient, is set to install the Zero Energy Home system in 30 homes of the ongoing Project Etopia in the near future. Moving forward, the program will expand to implement the system in even more households, combining the power of SmartThings Energy solutions with Q CELLS’ solar panel and energy storage systems.

SmartThings Clothing Care

SmartThings Clothing Care connects all your clothing care devices, such as the Bespoke dryer, Bespoke AirDresser, Bespoke ShoeDresser¹⁵ and all AI washers, to provide optimal clothing management with services tailored to your lifestyle. The service offers customized care options based on your garments’ material types. What’s more, SmartThings Clothing Care offers practical AI recommendations based on usage patterns and the current season and reminds you to purchase laundry supplies regularly to keep your clothing fresh and your laundry room stocked.¹⁶

SmartThings Pet Care

Now, pet owners can rejoice that they can care for their furry friends, even when they’re not at home. When a pet is alone at home, SmartThings Pet Care will automatically play music or TV shows,¹⁷ offering them a sense of security and companionship. You can even keep an eye on your pets¹⁸ remotely by accessing the smart camera of your Bespoke Jet Bot AI+. In addition, by adjusting the settings on appliances like lights, air conditioners, air purifiers and more, you can make your home more comfortable and safe for your pet while you’re away.

SmartThings Air Care

SmartThings Air Care¹⁹ keeps you up to date with important information about the air quality inside and outside your home. SmartThings Home Care

SmartThings Home Care keeps tabs on all connected Samsung household devices, including Bespoke appliances, by checking their status and usage patterns, providing information about accessories and enabling convenient online purchases. This service sends notifications and guides users on regular maintenance based on the collected usage data, such as cleaning each device and replacing specific components. By letting SmartThings take care of your home, you can troubleshoot home appliance issues independently without relying on a repairman for simple tasks.

Family Hub

Since its launch in 2016, the Family Hub has been continually updated to offer the latest in connected experiences for Samsung refrigerator users, transforming refrigerators into communication and entertainment hubs for the kitchen. What’s more, the Family Hub also doubles as a home control for the SmartThings app. In its latest update launching in July, Family Hub’s new features offer even more entertainment, smart features and connectivity to the kitchen. Samsung Electronics today announced the global launch of the Bespoke French Door Refrigerator, beginning in the United States and expanding to regions across the world by the end of the year. Initially unveiled at CES 2022, the new model is available in a choice of 3-door and 4-door configurations, and with options that include Family Hub. With the launch, the Bespoke lineup now includes a model fit for every family’s needs.

Combining unique and customizable designs with Samsung’s latest storage and cooling innovations, the new line offers consumers the refrigerator they’ve always wanted with the convenience they truly need. A choice of 12 stylish glass and steel finishes allows families to pick the perfect look to complement their kitchen, while SpaceMax technology ensures they can comfortably store all their groceries for all types of cooking.

The Bespoke French Door Refrigerator comes packed with Samsung’s latest cooling and storage innovations. These convenient features provide families with freshly filtered water and offer them the freedom to customize cooling settings.

Built into the refrigerator’s interior to reduce the risk of contamination, the Beverage Center offers fast and easy access to refreshingly cold and naturally flavored water. As soon as it is placed inside the fridge, the dishwasher safe¹ and BPA free² Autofill Pitcher automatically fills with purified water, which can be infused with fruits and herbs to create deliciously flavored beverages.

The Dual Auto Ice Maker produces both Cubed Ice and Ice Bites^TM, which are smaller than ice cubes and can chill drinks much faster. It is capable of producing 5.3lbs (2.4kg) of ice per day and stores up to 9.9lbs (4.5kg)³ — twice the amount of other ice makers. Its sliding cover makes it easy to use an ice scoop and helps protect ice from exposure to air when the freezer door is open.

The refrigerator’s FlexZone⁴ helps keep foods fresher for longer by storing them under optimal conditions. With five pre-set temperature modes, including Soft Freeze, Meat/Fish, Beverage, Deli and Wine, this independently controlled compartment offers families the flexibility to store a wide range of items depending on their needs.

Bigger Is Better

Modern families require fridges that cater to their cooking style with maximized storage space and preservation of freshness. With enhancements that create more room for families’ must-have items, the Bespoke French Door Refrigerator makes it easier for households to store more food more efficiently.

The 4-door model features 29 cubic feet of internal capacity, while the 3-door model features 30 cubic feet. The models’ spacious designs were made possible in part thanks to Samsung’s SpaceMax Technology. High-efficiency insulation enabled the refrigerator’s interior walls to be made thinner, creating more room for groceries.

With more households consuming fresh produce these days, the large-capacity Big Veggie Box offers a convenient space to keep all kinds of fruits and vegetables fresh. The compartment sends away messy fridges and wilted vegetables to the past by storing foods longer at optimal temperature. Creating more room for fresh produce saves space on the fridge’s shelves while also helping families save time and trips to the store.

The New Big Pantry,⁵ meanwhile, is a dedicated drawer that allows families to store much more meat, poultry and other delicate ingredients like fish. Pre-prepared foods and meal kits fit perfectly inside so the fridge’s interior shelves can be kept neat and organized. There’s even a dedicated space for canned drinks to be stored upright.

More Fun With Family Hub

The availability of Family Hub adds new layers of fun and efficiency to managing the whole kitchen and household. The platform’s features have been expanded for 2022 to make it even easier for families to stay connected, organized and entertained.

Now, in addition to sharing photos and messages, families can use Family Hub to watch Samsung TV Plus, listen to music and enjoy continuous viewing experiences by mirroring content from their Samsung Smart TV or Samsung Galaxy smartphone.⁶ View Inside lets families remotely peek inside their fridge, tag food types and create shopping lists and reminders, and has been upgraded to identify items more accurately.

With new built-in Alexa support, Family Hub also allows consumers to access key Amazon⁷ services right from their refrigerator. Families can talk to Alexa, listen to Amazon Music and Audible, read Kindle books and even replace their fridge’s water filter with Smart Reorders.⁸

The Bespoke Kitchen: Home Appliances That Evolve in Line With Users’ Changing Lives

Q: What can you tell us about the home appliance products and technologies that are being showcased at CES 2022?

We are going to focus on introducing the Bespoke kitchen, in which refrigerators and colors are unified to great effect. The Bespoke kitchen begins with our flagship Bespoke refrigerators. We’ve expanded the Bespoke range to FDR (French Door refrigerators) in the U.S. market in 4-door and 3-door models. This represents a significant expansion of our lineup following the release of Bespoke refrigerators in 4-Door Flex, Bottom Mount Freezer and 1-Door Column types in 2021.

One unique point of innovation for Samsung’s Bespoke refrigerator is the Beverage Center. Featuring a water dispenser hidden inside the door, the Beverage Center offers a convenient, hygienic solution that enables the fridge to feature a smooth exterior. Along with the new Bespoke refrigerators, we’re also showcasing other vibrant and colorful products that are part of the Bespoke kitchen like oven ranges and dishwashers.

These days, we’re seeing more customers in the U.S. choose modern designs for their kitchens. With Bespoke, we want to show that it’s possible to decorate your kitchen based on your individual tastes with a palette that includes colors that blend in with your interior, as well as accent colors.

At CES, we are also showcasing SmartThings Cooking, a service that introduces connected experiences to the kitchen. With this service, users can receive recipe recommendations and information to help them save time on both prep and cooking. SmartThings Cooking recommends recipes that fit your tastes and dietary restrictions, then builds meal plans to match. As you’re cooking, it also sends recipe instructions directly to synced Samsung cooking devices.

Q: What are some unique or attractive aspects of the new Bespoke offerings that you don’t want visitors at CES to miss?

First, I’d like to underline the expansion of the Bespoke range, which gives consumers who want their refrigerator to reflect their preferences in terms of color and materials even more options to choose from. Since launching Bespoke in the U.S. in 2021, we’ve seen continuous demand for this type of customization. Delivering on this is one of the reasons we added the French Door refrigerator to our 2022 Bespoke refrigerator lineup. The panels come in twelve colors, which means that there are over 20,000 possible color combinations for a four-door refrigerator alone. I am confident that no other refrigerator offers customers this much choice.

Another can’t-miss aspect is the features. The Beverage Center, for instance includes a 1.4-liter AutoFill water pitcher, as well as a Dual Auto Ice Maker that holds up to 4.1kg of ice. What’s more, the FlexZone offers five different temperature modes to keep ingredients like meat, seafood, fruits and vegetables at optimal temperatures. These unique features help bring greater convenience to users’ daily lives.

Users also get to experience an even smarter kitchen with Family Hub, which is included in the latest Bespoke refrigerator lineup. By using the large screen on the front of the refrigerator users can enjoy music and videos in the kitchen and control kitchen appliances and smart devices too. With a screen that integrates seamlessly into the door panel, and with a highly aesthetic design and minimized bezels, the Bespoke Family Hub is capable of blending into any space.

Last but not least, we are introducing the Bespoke Atelier app that we first launched in Korea to the global market. The app offers access to more than 170 works of art from global artists, covering various periods, trends and themes. It recommends works of art and allows you to create your own gallery of sorts by customizing your display to suit your tastes. In addition, when users display an artwork in listening mode, they’ll be able to hear a description of the art with subtitles. This makes it feel like you’re enjoying a guided tour an art museum from the comfort of your kitchen.

Q: Our way of life has changed dramatically over the past two years, with technology that connects people becoming more important as contactless ways of doing things increasingly become the norm. What kind of impact do you think the products and technologies showcased at CES 2022 will have on people’s lives?

As users have begun to spend more and more time at home, their lives have become more “home-centric”. We expect this trend to continue in 2022. At the same time, concern for sustainability continues to increase on the heels of events like the United Nations’ COP26 conference, and with environmental regulations being strengthened across the globe. With these shifts in consumer lifestyles and interests in mind, Samsung has been working to provide kitchen solutions that are “customized, smarter, and more sustainable.”

Our customized kitchen solutions cater to users who have been spending a lot of time in their kitchen and thus feel a stronger desire to remodel their space to reflect their tastes. By expanding our Bespoke lineup, we are providing a more diverse range of refrigerator types and color options, helping users build customized kitchens that suit both their lifestyle and their interior design scheme.

Spending more time at home has naturally led to a rise in home cooking as well. To help make this easier by making kitchens “smarter”, Samsung introduced SmartThings Cooking, a tailored cooking journey service that does everything from looking up recipes to creating a diet plan and even shops for groceries. Powered by Whisk’s Food AI, SmartThings Cooking recommends your personalized recipe and meal plans based on your tastes, dietary needs and groceries you have on hand. The service also allows you to enjoy convenient one-stop grocery shopping with your favorite grocery retail brands available through the Whisk network. When it comes time to cook, SmartThings ensures a seamless cooking experience while communicating directly with your smart Samsung kitchen appliances.

And with Family Hub, consumers can even utilize this service through the display on the front of their fridge while continuing to control other home appliances from it as well.

Finally, our kitchen solutions are becoming “more sustainable.” Bespoke refrigerators are built for high energy efficiency, and their replaceable door panels help extend their lifespans. Samsung continues to innovate on this front, seeking out ways to incorporate cutting-edge technology into our appliances while keeping sustainability in mind as well.

The Freestyle : Designing a Screen That’s Not Limited by Space

Q: Could you walk us through how your team came up with The Freestyle?

Ever since the pandemic changed our daily lives, our personal spaces have become more and more important. This is particularly true of relaxing spaces like the bedroom, where we’re seeing more people using products for the purposes of entertainment. We’re also seeing more people utilize cozy and quiet spaces in their homes, as well as increased interest in spending time outdoors – by going camping, for example. We wanted to reflect these trends of our time in our products, and enable users to use them as they wish – anytime, anywhere, and regardless of space limitations. That’s how we came up with the personal, movable smart screen that is The Freestyle.

Q: What are unique points of the Freestyle?

The Freestyle was designed to offer users new levels of functionality. It’s easy to see what sets this product apart just by looking at it. To allow users to carry around every day, we designed The Freestyle to be lightweight, weighing just 830 grams. The fact that you can conveniently carry it with you wherever you go is its biggest advantage.

The Freestyle also features a simpler installation process. All users need to do is place The Freestyle wherever they want, and then turn it on. That’s it. The Freestyle comes with full auto keystone and auto leveling features, enabled by industry-leading technology. The features allow the device to automatically adjust its screen to any surface at any angle, providing a perfectly proportional image every time.

Users can enjoy a seamless and continuous viewing experience by accessing their user accounts and settings for major OTT services. On top of that, we’ve also applied the industry’s first far-field voice control technology. So when the screen is turned on, users can search for content using just their voice. When the screen is off, they can use the device to listen to music or ask for the day’s weather just as they would with a smart speaker.

The Freestyle’s picture and sound quality – the most basic and important features of any display – also deserve a closer look. We applied Samsung TVs’ picture quality engine, and the white balance is adjusted automatically according to the color and tone of the wall that the screen is being projected to. We also applied dual passive radiators to produce deep, high-quality bass. This allows customers to enjoy a cinema-quality sound experience no matter where they are.

Q: In line with Samsung’s ‘Screens Everywhere’ vision, The Freestyle can be utilized in various ways for maximum convenience. What are some specific use cases for The Freestyle?

First of all, The Freestyle can be conveniently set up in a user’s bedroom. While lying in bed, before falling asleep, they can use the device’s integrated cradle to move the screen from the wall to the ceiling to continue watching a movie more comfortably. The Freestyle can also be placed lightly on a dining room table, transforming the room into a new space for entertainment.

In order to utilize spaces like this, our developers came up with a new installation solution that we applied to the product. Thanks to those efforts, users can also utilize the device on a tabletop or floor by connecting it to a standard E26 light socket.¹ There’s no need for a separate power supply or cable connection, so it can be used immediately.

For powering it up, The Freestyle is compatible with external batteries² that support USB-PD and 50W/20V output or above, so users can take it with them anywhere, whether they are on the move, on a camping trip and more. When it’s not used as a projector to stream content, The Freestyle also provides mood lighting effect thanks to its ambient mode and translucent lens cap.

Through close cooperation with Samsung’s MX (Mobile eXperience) Business, we’ve equipped The Freestyle with a button that syncs it with Galaxy devices. With just a push of a button, users can instantly use their Galaxy device as a remote control. They can also utilize mobile hotspots when no Wi-Fi networks are available. We’ve developed this product by paying close attention to even the smallest details, all to make the device just as convenient and easy to use outdoors as it is at home.

Samsung Electronics today announced its first-ever Bespoke French Door refrigerator, to be unveiled at CES 2022, bringing Bespoke to nearly every major refrigerator type sold in the United States.

Available in a choice of 3-door, 4-door and Family Hub models, the new Bespoke French Door refrigerator expands Samsung’s Bespoke lineup. At CES 2022, Samsung is set to display a full array of Bespoke appliances, including new products such as the Bespoke Jet cordless stick vacuum cleaner and the Bespoke Washer and Dryer, bringing Bespoke to the rest of the home.

The new line represents the very best of Samsung, pairing customizable designs with unique technologies that together inspire entirely new ways of living. Expanding on the existing Bespoke refrigerator lineup, which includes the Bespoke 4-Door Flex, Bespoke 2-Door Bottom Freezer and Bespoke 1-Door Flex Column, this latest addition ensures that there is a Bespoke refrigerator option to suit every family’s needs. The Bespoke French Door refrigerator will be available in 3-door and 4-door configurations — in both full and counter-depth models — and includes options featuring the upgraded Family Hub for 2022.

With 12 colors and two finishes — glass and steel — to choose from, the Bespoke French Door refrigerator features thousands of color combinations. Bespoke Jet

First introduced at Bespoke Home 2021 and coming to global markets in 2022, the Bespoke Jet cordless stick vacuum cleaner brings Bespoke innovation into the living room.

Featuring Samsung’s All-in-One Clean Station, the Bespoke Jet takes the chore out of keeping your home clean and hygienic. Once they are done cleaning, users can simply dock the vacuum cleaner and it will automatically empty the dust bag and begin to charge.

The Bespoke Jet also features a modern, premium design that is powerful yet light, and built to offer families a comprehensive cleaning solution. If you own a Family Hub, SmartThings Cooking can link with your fridge’s ViewInside cameras. Using AI food recognition capabilities, the cameras can automatically scan the products inside your fridge and identify them. You can view this on your Family Hub screen.¹

An automatic Meal Planner recommends meals for the week and generates shopping lists for missing ingredients. If you like, you can then connect directly to online grocery retailers for checkout straight from your smartphone.

When you’re ready to start cooking, SmartThings Cooking becomes your sous-chef as your Samsung appliances communicate directly with each other. SmartThings Clothing Care

Although suits and formal wear don’t get worn as much as they used to, we still fill hampers on a daily basis. SmartThings Clothing Care, which works with smart Samsung washers and dryers, as well as the new Bespoke AirDresser, provides three key services so you can sort it all out with ease.

The service can recommend cycles for your wash based on garment materials, your usage patterns, weather, and season.

SmartThings Clothing Care also keeps track of the detergent levels in your washer and features a Smart Reorder² function that helps you manage and purchase laundry supplies by placing orders online.

Starting in the second half of 2021,³ custom cycles are also easy to manage with SmartThings Clothing Care. You can store up to ten custom cycles and name them yourself, so if you have a penchant for delicate vintage clothes or leather you can save separate options for each of them.

SmartThings Air

With parents, kids, pets and roommates running around the house, it’s critical to stay aware of air quality in various parts of the home as well as outside.

SmartThings Air gives you important information about air quality in each part of your home, and even outside.

SmartThings Air can suggest helpful tips and even automate settings that activate synced air conditioners, air purifiers, air sensors, and window sensors to manage your surrounding air quality.⁴ Breathe easy with real-time air quality alerts and functions that are tailored to your needs while SmartThings Air gives you the information you need to ensure your home’s ventilation and air circulation are in check.

SmartThings Pet

If you’ve ever wished you had a way to keep an eye on your pet while you’re away, SmartThings Pet is the service for you.

When in Pet Care Mode, the service uses the camera on Samsung’s Jet Bot AI+* robot vacuum to record videos of your pet whenever it comes into view, and send those videos to you in real time. The Jet Bot AI+* is powered by Intel AI, and can learn to recognize your pet.

In addition, the service can connect to other SmartThings devices in your home including air conditioners, lights, air purifiers and more, letting you change the settings remotely to make your pet as comfortable as possible, even when you’re not at home.

SmartThings Cooking’s Meal Planner automatically suggests a full week’s worth of delicious meals based on the family’s preferences and the ingredients they have in their fridge. With a few quick taps, Dad is able to create a grocery shopping basket straight from the recipes and conveniently complete payment through his usual online retailer.¹

The family’s meals planned out for the week, Dad turns his attention to their meal for that evening. Considering what they have already eaten that week and the ingredients they have in the house, Family Hub recommends a sumptuous chicken pasta bake. Once he has completed his meal prep, he selects “Cook Mode” on his Family Hub screen to receive step-by-step instructions. When it is time to turn on his oven, the appropriate temperature and timing settings are transmitted to his Samsung smart oven with a tap of the “Send to Oven” button.

About to head home for the day, Mom opens the SmartThings app on her smartphone and sees that the family’s meals for the week are all ready to go. She is excited to see that she has a delicious pasta bake to look forward to when she gets home!

[Tuesday, 3:30 PM] Enriching Precious Family Moments

Jenny, the youngest child, goes to the Family Hub to show off the first photos she took all by herself on its screen, proudly displaying them for her family to see and decorating her display with images and stickers. By accessing the Family Hub device plug-in within the mobile SmartThings app, users can quickly and easily add photos to their large 21.5-inch Family Hub screen for all their loved ones to enjoy.

Mom arrives in the kitchen, ready to prepare dinner. She sees Jenny’s photos, smiles, and swipes to the Cooking Board to see what’s for dinner. Checking the recipe on the screen, she begins preparing the ingredients and sets the oven to the allocated pre-heat temperature by pressing “Send to Oven.”

[Tuesday, 6 PM] Making the Kitchen Fun

Time to start cooking! Using the Family Hub’s internet browser, Mom pulls up an online cooking tutorial to remind herself how to prepare the meal.  That done, she uses one-touch Mirroring from her smartphone to play a video for the family’s youngest child and keep them entertained while herself and her eldest child prepare the meal.

When Dad arrives home, he comes in to find his family all happily cooking together and nodding along to some great cooking tunes.

[Tuesday, 10 PM] A Smarter and Safer Space 

With the dishes all done, it’s time for the family to retire for the night. Dad goes to the Family Hub to check that all of the family’s appliances are set to their appropriate modes for the night. The Family Hub also lets him know that the temperature is set to drop significantly that night, allowing him to set the thermostat to the right temperature to keep his family comfortable. Before heading to bed, Dad uses the SmartThings Video Widget to check that the house’s internal and front door cameras are working well, ensuring that his family will rest safe and secure.

You can even browse the categorized recipe collections to match your craving, ingredient, or mood. SmartThings Cooking also allows you to enjoy convenient one-stop grocery shopping through Walmart, Kroger, Instacart, and Amazon Fresh, using the Whisk network.

Every recipe is laid out to guide you through the simplified cooking process, timing and explaining each step like an at-home cooking class. You can also manage meal prep with one-touch control over cooking modes, temperatures, and time settings, and monitor the entire process at a single glance.

SmartThings Cooking is powered by Whisk, a smart food platform acquired by Samsung NEXT. Whisk’s Food AI brings together user preferences, intent, and environmental factors to deliver personalized cooking experiences. Simply save a few of your favorite recipes into the recipe box and, if you wish, share your personal food preferences and your location. You will then receive customized recommendations.

Although SmartThings Cooking is a standalone service accessible via the SmartThings app,² Family Hub owners can also enjoy meal planning conveniently from their fridge.³ The smart fridge offers a full-screen dedicated board optimized for SmartThings Cooking, which works with Family Hub to understand what’s inside the fridge and add missing ingredients directly to your online grocery cart for at-home delivery.

Samsung’s Family Hub for 2021 also brings powerful new capabilities that make it the center of the smart home. Widgets for the most frequently used functions have become easier to use, with a larger music widget that includes personalized recommendations and an upgraded SmartThings widget that serves as a dashboard for all your smart home devices. The company’s flagship refrigerator lineup was first introduced in Korea in 2019, and has since expanded into global markets. Bespoke turned out to be a game-changer, driving two-thirds of refrigerator sales in Korea, and proving that consumers – particularly millennials – are in the market for appliances that answer their unique lifestyle needs. Launching the ‘Bespoke Home’ Era

In Samsung’s vision for the future, the concept of customizing appliances to fit users’ lifestyles does not stop with refrigerators. Who among us has not experienced the frustration of trying to book tickets home ahead of a busy holiday weekend? While some book online from the comfort of their homes, others – many of them elderly – will line up at the break of dawn to reserve tickets in-person at major train and bus stations.

Picture this: Person A recently went to a restaurant, but ended up leaving without ordering anything. Person A uses a wheelchair, and the controls on the restaurant’s self-order kiosk were slightly out of reach. As the staff seemed busy, Person A felt shy about asking for assistance, and chose to visit another restaurant instead.

While at first glance, the two stories above may seem unrelated, they both exemplify the dark side of technology in the digital era. Things like telecommuting, distance learning, autonomous driving, and AI job interviews are proof positive that digital technologies are becoming increasingly prevalent in both business and society. Unfortunately, digitalization is also creating issues.

To help address those issues, digital technology leaders must accept an important new mission: taking on corporate digital responsibility (CDR). In a nutshell, CDR involves developing products and technologies in a manner that protects users’ rights, and taking steps to enable more people to experience the benefits of digital technologies. The pandemic has prompted more sectors to utilize digital technologies, which has led to increasing pressure on businesses to engage in CDR. As a leader in cutting-edge technologies, what is Samsung Electronics doing to become more digitally responsible? Here are several ‘quests’ that Samsung has undertaken with regard to digital responsibility.

QUEST #1 | Consider Users’ Rights When Developing Products

The more useful a product is, the wider the gap between users and non-users becomes. Samsung strives for accessibility in its products, enhancing them with technologies that make it easy for all users, regardless of age, gender, or disability, to utilize them.

Take Samsung’s TVs, for example. The TVs’ Voice Guide function provides an audio guide for TV settings, combining channel and volume controls with tools to help you schedule a viewing, view current and scheduled program information, and browse the internet. When viewing content with sign language, Samsung’s proprietary AI algorithm automatically recognizes the sign language area and can enlarge it by up to 200 percent.

Samsung mobile devices have also introduced a variety of convenient accessibility features. This includes a function that allows those with hearing difficulties to pair a compatible hearing aid to their device via low-power Bluetooth, as well as a fixed-key feature for users with physical disabilities. In addition, Samsung’s Family Hub refrigerator caters to users in wheelchairs with functions that make it possible to move the top of the screen to an easier-to-reach position, adjust the height of the main controls, and launch the menu by tapping anywhere on the screen.

Digital advancements can be incredible, but they can cut both ways. Yes, they tend to make life more comfortable, but they can also create social issues like ‘smombies’¹ and ‘nomophobia’.² From a product design standpoint, helping users enjoy healthy digital lifestyles is a key part of being digitally responsible. Samsung has therefore committed to developing digital well-being tools that are based on five digital well-being values: Digital Detox, Balance, Guard, Wellness, and Safety. For example, Samsung’s App Timer feature (which falls under the Balance category) can help users reduce the amount of time they spend on applications by setting time limits. Focus Mode (Digital Detox) allows users to pause or silence notifications from selected apps temporarily, while the Samsung Kids service (Guard) helps create a safe environment for children to explore, play and develop good digital habits.

Safety is crucial when it comes to smartphones, as we tend to fill them with a wide range of important information, including everything from bank account numbers, contacts and photos. Samsung’s Find My Mobile feature was created to protect that valuable information in the event that you lose your phone. Once activated, it tracks the location of the lost phone, tells the user where it is, and offers them the choice to delete their personal data, including messages and photos, or upload it to Samsung Cloud. The Samsung Knox platform offers defense-grade mobile security, while the smartphones’ Secure Wi-Fi feature allows you to safely browse the internet on public wireless connections without worrying about your personal information being compromised.

QUEST #2 | Share the Benefits of Digital Technology with More People

“I saved two lives that were almost lost.”

“The technology is really useful for finding hidden sparks and embers and putting them out.”

The quotes above are from firefighters who utilized a product of Samsung’s in-house incubation program, C-Lab (Creative Lab), to help protect their community. The product they’re describing is a thermal observation device that uses thermal imaging cameras to help firefighters detect fires’ ignition points and identify and rescue others. It’s just one of many C-Lab innovations that reflect Samsung’s commitments to (1) developing products and services that address social issues, and (2) sharing those technologies with communities that need them.

Lives’Talk, a wearable device for tracking nomadic livestock, is another example of a community-enriching C-Lab innovation. The technology was created to make it easier for nomadic communities in Kazakhstan to find and retrieve their livestock. Once attached to livestock, the device’s GPS transmitter-receiver tracks the animals’ locations in real time. A total of 700 Lives’Talk devices were donated in all, helping farmers in these communities become more self-reliant.

Samsung is also advancing digital education programs that equip young minds with the tools they need to become leaders in creating a better world. The Samsung Smart School initiative provides smart devices and solutions to students in areas with little access to IT equipment, reducing the digital divide while supporting students’ creativity. The Samsung Dream Class program, meanwhile, offers middle school students living in areas with lower access to high-quality education an opportunity to take part in enriching classes covering subjects like math and coding. The Samsung Innovation Campus program offers youth entering the job market for the first time hands-on training in skills that technology-related jobs require, including fields like AI, IoT and data analysis. Together, these initiatives are representative of Samsung’s ongoing efforts to promote digital responsibility worldwide.

QUEST #3 | Uphold the Principles of CDR When Developing New Technologies

Often, when developing AI technology, the ethical beliefs of the people behind the technology will inform the ethics of the AI itself. Having recognized the importance of emphasizing social and ethical responsibility in technology development, Samsung established a set of AI ethics principles to put into practice. The company also established guidelines for employees to raise awareness of AI ethics within its workforce.

Samsung has gone to great lengths to foster an ecosystem of open innovation. Not only has the company introduced more than 130 open source projects, but it also hosts its annual Samsung Open Source Conference (SOSCON) to offer experts a forum to share and discuss new developments.

RESULT | Samsung Ranks in Top Ten of WBA’s 2020 Digital Inclusion Benchmark

Samsung’s consistent, multifaceted efforts to be digitally responsible have earned a ranking in the top ten of the World Benchmarking Alliance’s (WBA) Digital Inclusion Benchmark. Notably, Samsung is the only Korean company to rank in the top ten, and ranks third in Asia and fourth among companies in the hardware sector.

The WBA represents an alliance forged among approximately 176 global, regional and local organizations to shape the private sector’s contributions to achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The WBA examines companies with a focus on seven key categories, including human rights, the environment, and digital inclusion. The WBA launched its very first Digital Inclusion Benchmark this year, which evaluated companies’ progress in improving access to technology, enhancing digital skills, fostering trustworthy use, and innovating both openly and ethically.

Samsung was noted for being one of the few companies that had established AI ethics principles. The company’s C-Lab program was singled out for its social contributions, while Samsung’s devotion to the expansion of the open-source ecosystem also earned a positive review. The Samsung Kids feature, which encourages children to have healthy smartphone habits, also received a high rating, as did the company’s various social contribution programs, in particular those that are helping communities close the digital divide.

Connect and Control Your Smart Home

The new Family Hub takes managing your smart home to the next level. You can monitor and control over 1,000 SmartThings-compatible products throughout your home: turn your lights on or off, see who’s at the front door, set the temperature, and lock the front door. And with the addition of the new SmartThings Video widget, you can now view multiple security cameras at-a-glance, to keep an eye on your entire home from the kitchen.

Since that announcement, Bixby has expanded to a variety of products, including smartphones, wearables, tablets, smart TVs, Family Hub refrigerators and more, as well as SmartThings-connected devices. Over the last year, Samsung has opened the door for developers to create their own Bixby capsules with the introduction of the Bixby Developer Studio, and made it easy for users to download those services with the launch of the Bixby Marketplace in June.

The tools and enhancements introduced at SDC19 will make developing capsules easier, and offer developers opportunities to reach an expansive user base across Samsung’s device portfolio. For example, with the Bixby Developer Studio’s new Bixby Templates, rather than building a capsule’s code and model manually from scratch, developers can simply choose from a variety of templates designed to handle many situations – including offering a fact of the day or quiz, telling jokes, or playing a podcast.

Not only are capsules easier to create, they’re also quick and easy to find thanks to new Natural Language Categories. This means that now, when developers register their capsules under specific categories, if a user makes a request, Bixby will be able to search and suggest related capsules that fall under that category. It also means that users can call up capsules using natural language, rather than invoking the capsule’s specific name. This not only offers users a more convenient experience, it also makes it easier for developers’ capsules to be discovered and used.

To kickstart the creation of more capsules, the Bixby Developer Studio includes a new Bixby Views function, which enables developers to create capsules that feature consistent user interface designs across Bixby-enabled smartphones, TVs, tablets, smartwatches, refrigerators and more. Samsung has also announced that beginning in 2020, the Bixby Marketplace will expand to devices beyond smartphones. Interested developers can get a head start on developing for upcoming Bixby-enabled devices by using Bixby Views to start building seamless multi-device experiences.

In addition to hosting SDC, throughout the year, Samsung organizes workshops and sessions at locations around the world that offer developers valuable opportunities to hone their skills, gain exposure, and win prizes. Included among these are the Bixby DevJam competition and the Bixby Premier Developer Program. The former offers developers prizes for exceptionally innovative capsule creations, while the latter offers them first-class technical support, devices for testing and iterating capsules, and Bixby Marketplace exposure.

Intelligent Recommendations for Informed Cooking

For this year’s IFA Club des Chefs cooking show, Chef Michel Roux Jr. was in charge of preparing the appetizer and dessert while Chef Michel Troisgros took responsibility for the entrée.

Chef Roux Jr. used the Quick View Inside feature of the Samsung Family Hub refrigerator to quickly and easily check what ingredients were available inside the refrigerator. Quick View Inside is an upgraded feature of the latest version of the Family Hub that lets users use the refrigerator’s View Inside feature no matter what page or app they have been visiting. Chef Roux Jr. demonstrated to the audience that Quick View Inside was accessible simply by dragging down the upper scroll bar of the refrigerator’s screen with three fingers, an intuitive upgraded user interface feature.

Minimized Cooking Time, Maximum Efficiency

Moving on to the preparation of his two dishes, Chef Roux Jr. took advantage of the flexibility offered by Samsung’s Dual Cook Flex Oven as he was able to simultaneously bake choux buns for the dessert whilst also cooking the appetizer, a pissaladière. Given that choux buns require a hotter cooking temperature than a pissaladière, Chef Roux Jr. was able to cook the two dishes separately in the upper and lower compartments of the Dual Cook Flex Oven, meaning they could cook independently yet at the same time at different temperatures. Chef Roux Jr. was also able to check on each dish in its separate compartment without disturbing the other, thanks to the Dual Cook Flex Oven’s versatile Flexible Door.

When it came to Chef Troisgros’ turn to prepare his entrée, Chef Troisgros was able to minimize food preparation time thanks to the Dual Flex Zone Plus’s cooktop, which meant that he could cook potatoes two different ways simultaneously – one in a pot and one in a wide steamer. The audience was impressed with how, thanks to its expansive, open dual-zone surface, the Dual Flex Zone Plus offers chefs maximum efficiency and flexibility when cooking with different sizes of cookware at the same time.

AI-Powered Kitchen Assistance with Bot Chef

For the preparation of the sauce of the entrée, the Club des Chef’s latest sous-chef made its appearance — Samsung Bot Chef. The audience was impressed to see how Samsung’s AI-powered kitchen assistant robot — also called a cobot — was able to independently work on a variety of tasks, including seasoning the sauce with salt, stirring the contents of the pan and even taking hold of a utensil and offering up a spoonful of the sauce for the Chefs to taste.

The audience was eager to hear from the event MC and Chefs how Bot Chef uses an extensible AI-powered system that users can command, with new skills available via download from Samsung’s robot skills ecosystem. Bot Chef can be instructed either by simple voice command or through app-based controls, and is able to assist with tasks throughout the cooking process, from preparation – cutting or stirring food – to plating and seasoning.

During Bot Chef’s presentation, the Club des Chefs cooking show audience witnessed not only how this innovative artificial intelligence-assisted technology helped with cooking, but also how Samsung’s mobile ecosystem capabilities create a seamless connectivity throughout the cooking process across Samsung’s home appliance devices.

Premium Connectivity for the Modern Kitchen

As the show was drawing to a close, the MC invited Chef Troisgros and Chef Roux Jr. to join her for a selfie to commemorate the event. The photo was then easily transferred from a Samsung smartphone to the Family Hub’s Family Board to be displayed for all.

The audience left the cooking event full of ideas as to how Samsung’s smart kitchen appliances, driven by AI and IoT functionality, can seamlessly integrate into their own kitchens. Thanks to their premium contemporary design and intelligent support capabilities, Samsung smart kitchens are creating brighter futures for busy modern families today.

In 2016, Samsung announced its aim to launch a “revolutionary advancement that changes the refrigerator category in meaningful ways.” Since then, the subsequent versions of the Family Hub have continued to get better and better. At CES 2019, Samsung unveiled the new Family Hub, one of the company’s most anticipated products that has been packed with upgraded features.

The new Family Hub is all about giving over more time to the family, offering them a communal, emotional and cultural experience in the kitchen. Popular smart features – including built-in view cameras, voice recognition technology and music and radio streaming – are all there. But Samsung has taken it to the next level by enriching the core values of the Family Hub with enhanced AI and IoT capabilities. Let’s take a look at what the company has put in the new smart kitchen assistant.

Share Memories and Memos on the Family Board

One of the most exciting new features is the Family Board. Families around the world use their refrigerator doors as bulletin-boards to share various things with each other – whether it’s by posting each family member’s schedule and the weekly menu, attaching travel magnets of the countries that they have visited, or proudly displaying the kids’ artworks for everyone to see.

According to a survey conducted by Samsung, over 60% of Family Hub users in the US are families with children. That’s why Samsung paid close attention to updating this distinct feature. The Family Board allows family members to interact with one another and share countless memories, giving the refrigerator’s screen a familiar, analogue feel. Meanwhile the Home Screen offers a digital service experience with an overview of important information and apps. The new Whiteboard has been updated with smart calligraphy that can recognize handwriting and a drawing function that can identify the objects depicted.

There is also a dynamic screen saver feature that can be used to display precious family moments or blend into your home with ambient mode when Family Hub’s touch screen is not in use.

Experience Seamless Home AI with the New Bixby

Another feature that sets the 2019 Family Hub apart from previous iterations is support for the new Bixby.

The new Bixby offers more services, allowing users to seamlessly control and monitor home IoT devices and services from the kitchen with your voice alone. For example, when you run out of ideas on what to cook for dinner, you can ask the new Bixby to search for recipes that cater to your taste and new Bixby will respond with suggestions. You can also check the weather forecast ahead of time, so if new Bixby tells you that rain is on the forecast, you can set a reminder to tell the family to take an umbrella. With a 21.5-inch touchscreen, users can also check at a glance whatever weather charts or recommended restaurant lists and ratings that the new Bixby finds.

Enjoy More Home Entertainment Features

A lot of multitasking is required in the kitchen, so it can get quite hectic when you have to chop, prepare, and cook dishes at the same time. It gets even more tricky when your phone starts to ring. With an enhanced Smart View, multitasking is made easy, as you can mirror third-party apps on Family Hub’s screen seamlessly from your Galaxy phone, without the need to run the Smart View app on the fridge. Not only does the new Bixby allow you to answer a call hands-free, you can also browse through the millions of third-party apps available for the kitchen.

It’s now even easier for users to manage their apps on Family Hub, with efficient installation, updates and deletion from the Apps menu. On top of that, the Home Service can set the mood with music when you are preparing a small gathering or turn on your favorite playlist while you are cooking.

Get Smart about Food Management

Last but not least, the kitchen experience has become more intelligent and efficient with updated features for Food Management. With the new Family Hub 2019, you can search for healthy recipes or preset the oven directly from the Recipes app with easy-to-use voice features. You can also add items to your Shopping List or tag items for reminders and expiration dates.

Today’s growing families and new homebuyers bring a new outlook towards technology and how it fits their day to day lives. Technology is no longer something that needs to be learned, but rather something that functions seamlessly in ways that enhance their lives, provides increased personalization and allows them to spend time doing what matters most to them. A Smart Home isn’t about the devices, the speeds or the specs, but rather the experiences that start with the most basic daily routines.

In addition, over the past year, Samsung has consolidated all of its IoT apps into one, simplified and streamlined SmartThings app. At the same time, the number of SmartThings-compatible devices has doubled and now grown to include products from and partnerships with Amazon, Google, Plume, and Ring.

The result is a broader and even more open network for connecting and managing life at home, and the added convenience of getting daily tasks done as quickly and efficiently as possible. In other words, there’s less focus on what is connected and how it’s connected, and more on what the user can do by just saying what they want to do.

Delighting in Discovery

The space brings together modern Samsung solutions and a passion for cooking. At the space, chefs and guests alike can use a range of innovative Samsung appliances. The Dual Cook Flex Oven, for example, allows cooks to partition the oven to bake two dishes simultaneously, in different modes and at different temperatures.

Visitors to Cook Story by Samsung also have the opportunity to experience the smart Family Hub refrigerator. The appliance connects to other smart devices in the house, via a touchscreen panel, giving users the ability to manage their home more effectively, as well as providing an ideal environment for storing food, with intuitive tools that make it easy to plan and prepare meals.

A Hub of Innovation

As the largest home appliance market in Eastern Europe, Poland is an apt setting for the experience showroom, Cook Story by Samsung. The country represents one of key markets for Samsung, from which the company also operates a production base, supplying appliances to Europe.

In particular, Samsung’s QuickDrive washing machine has experienced success in the Polish market. The washing machine dramatically reduces the amount of time it takes to do laundry, without compromising performance. Since 2012, Samsung has also had the largest share of both the Polish and the global refrigerator markets.

As Samsung confirms its commitment to the home appliances market in Europe, the company has also showcased its built-in and premium home appliances at key events this year, such as IFA in Berlin and Eurocucina in Milan.

Reflecting on the overall growth of Samsung’s premium appliances in the European market, Vice President of Samsung’s Digital Appliance Business, Taehwan Hwang said: “Samsung’s experience showroom, Cook Story, highlights our innovative technologies, as well as the way our built-in and premium home appliances reflect the demands of local consumers. We constantly strive to create products with real value for users.”

Intelligent Recommendations for Chefs

Chef Davide Oldani was in charge of the appetizer while Chef Michel Troisgros provided the main dish and dessert. In order to decide what to prepare, the chefs used the View Inside function on the Family Hub to look at ingredients without having to open the refrigerator.

The chefs then reached out to the audience for a volunteer to take a look at the Smart Recipe offerings of the Family Hub with them. Smart Recipe is a novel intelligent function that recommends menu options for you based on the shelf life of the ingredients stored within, accommodating its suggestions to users’ tastes and preferences. Chef Troisgros (pictured above) praised its resourcefulness, noting that the strategic nature of the Smart Recipe function meant that no ingredient would be wasted.

Chef Troisgros confessed to the audience that the Family Hub was his personal favorite feature for its aesthetic quality, intelligent suggestions and the usability of the screen – perfect for messy cooking sessions.

With the volunteer having reviewed the screen and expressed their preference for something with passion fruit, Chef Troisgros announced that he would create a Swiss meringue dessert with a passion fruit filling arranged in the shape of a sunflower, “inspired by the expansive sunflower fields of my home in France.”

When it was his turn to use the Family Hub, Chef Troisgros told the audience: “the ‘window’ function of the Family Hub is perfect for getting the most out of your food. Eliminating the need to open the fridge door frequently, ingredients inside are kept fresh and at their best for longer.” The View Inside function even lists the expiration dates of the products, ensuring your ingredients are prepared when at their best.

Chef Oldani then utilized the Family Hub’s Smart Recipe function to settle on a unique bruschetta appetizer, regaling the audience with the fascinating story behind the evolution of the bruschetta recipe and even providing guests with a special Italian tomato water taster. Chef Troisgros then decided on a dynamic recipe of his own for the main course, ‘Le Jaune Ivre de Rouge’; a baked potato with egg yolk and parma ham in a red wine sauce.

Precise Cooking for Any Recipe

As the chefs got down to cooking, the audience was amazed when both of the chefs were able to cook their dishes, with different cooking times and temperatures, simultaneously with the Dual Cook Flex Oven. Chef Troisgros made the point that the Dual Flex makes the cooking process so much less stressful; “with many dishes to prepare at once, it can be stressful to know when and what to do. But at least with appliances like the Dual Flex, people can be more confident with the assistance these smart features provide.”

In addition to this helpful dual function, Chef Troisgros informed that audience that the Dual Cook Flex Oven automatically maintains the temperatures of both its compartments to ensure each dish is cooked to perfection, a feature critical to food preparation.

As the chefs moved along to the stovetop cooker, the audience watched in awe when, as Chef Oldani switched on the hob on, the hood automatically activated and the Virtual Flame function lit up. Virtual Flame, which glows just like a real flame to alert users to the heat of the cooker, is particularly useful in a family home to keep children away from open flames. Chef Oldani was quick to inform the audience that this feature was his favorite; “Chefs can get a feel for the temperature of the appliance and also stay safe in a busy kitchen.”

Premium Design, Smart Function

The built-in smart kitchen that was used during the cooking show is a collaboration between Samsung and German premium furniture company Nolte, with Samsung’s latest smart appliances fitting seamlessly into the luxurious design and décor of Nolte’s signature kitchen furnishings. The sleek design and sophisticated layout of the cooking space attracted many guests’ attention.

This year’s Samsung’s built-in kitchen booth was also designed with other luxury furniture brands including Italy’s LUBE, which are shown in the ‘Premium Kitchen Zone’ alongside Nolte products, and at luxury built-in brand ‘Dacor Zone’, attendees are able to peruse some of these innovative designs. The IFA kitchen is a testament to how Samsung smart kitchen appliances with AI and IoT can harmonize seamlessly with kitchen furnishings. Samsung has also collaborated with renowned brands including Scavolini and Veneta Cucine, and participated at exhibitions like EuroCucina to strengthen its commitment to building world-class premium appliances.

The smart kitchen zone was enhanced by luxury built-in kitchen appliance brand Dacor for a seamless finish incorporating the premium smart appliances into the kitchen space fluidly.

Having finished their meals, audience members expressed their wonder at the delicate tastes of each course, all cooked to perfection with Samsung’s intelligent kitchen appliances. Audience member Michael Wasiau especially appreciated the experimental nature of Chef Oldani’s bruschetta course, made with such simple ingredients as discovered in the Family Hub fridge.

Other audience members found the cooking show informative, as it highlighted the practice usage features like Smart Recipe can offer; “I usually check myself what’s in the fridge to see what I can make,” said Thea Frosshoph. “So, when cooking, besides getting creative myself and thinking ‘okay, what am I going to make today?’ I can find some cooking inspiration with what’s available.”

The audience left the cooking show inspired to make their own meals effortlessly with the help of the Samsung smart appliance ecosystem. “We are focused on bringing kitchens to life with smart technology that simplifies everything and creates new lifestyle opportunities,” affirms BK Kang, Executive Vice President of Digital Appliance Business at Samsung.

Transforming the Home Life: Laundromat Lab with QuickDrive

The tour begins in the Laundromat Lab, which showcases the latest of Samsung’s laundry innovations, the QuickDrive washing machine. Launched here at IFA just last year, the QuickDrive washer is already paving the way and has notably transformed people’s home lives for the better. QuickDrive achieved the highest growth among the top 10 brands in the European washing machine market** in the first half of this year compared to same period of 2017.

QuickDrive can wash clothes in half the time of conventional machines without compromising on washing performance, freeing up consumers’ time. The QuickDrive washer includes the unique Q-Drum, which features a drum and a backplate that rotate independently so that loads are moved dynamically in opposite directions – resulting in a full clean.

In order to best control each and every wash cycle, Samsung has integrated three key smart functions into QuickDrive machines through its AI-powered laundry care solution “Q-rator” for more intelligent and personalized control over laundry cycles. Firstly, the Laundry Recipe function recommends the best cycle to you based on the fabric and color of the specific load you select. Secondly, Laundry Planner allows you to designate a desired wash end time which the machine will automatically work back from, minimizing the time you spend on washing clothes and allowing you to stop and start laundry according to your schedule. Thirdly, HomeCare Wizard monitors the machine itself to provide diagnostic feedback on the machine’s cycle, energy and use pattern data – so that this is one less thing for you to have think about. More intelligent than ever, QuickDrive can even detect when your washing detergent will run out, and will automatically order more on a contract basis.

Home appliances have never been more helpful or easy to navigate, and according to recent surveys, consumer feedback shows that their lives are truly being transformed by the new ‘QuickDrive approach’ to doing laundry. On top of this, it has garnered a slew of recognition from leading industry peers, with the 2018 Which? Awards announcing Samsung as the leading Large Appliance brand and KBIS awarding QuickDrive the ‘Best of KBIS’ award for its leading innovation in Smart Home Technology.

Home Bistro Assistant: Dual Cook Flex Oven

Moving across to the Cooking section of the Cooking zone, visitors are getting to know Samsung’s industry-leading Dual Cook Flex Oven, in which consumers can cook several dishes simultaneously at different temperatures and cooking times. The freedom that this offers users is no small feat – Samsung has created an oven that allows you to take advantage of the dual cook feature with ease, with the specially designed oven door allowing you the flexibility to either cook two different dishes at once or use the entire oven for one dish with a larger cooking space.

Visitors to the Zone are being treated to demonstrations of the SmartThings app. With the Cooking Guide feature, the Dual Cook Flex Oven offers the most appropriate oven settings based on the ingredients of the dish you are preparing. Whether you are baking a cake or cooking a lasagna, Cooking Guide can suggest the best oven mode, temperature and time for optimum results.  The oven’s intelligent features can even go one step beyond this, as well, featuring the capacity to save preferred recipe settings and notes using My Recipe and Scrapbook for even smoother cooking experiences. Perusing the Dual Cook Flex Oven’s handy intelligent settings, you can get a real sense of the convenience these smart features offer – along with providing the ultimate in cooking personalization.

The Center of Home Communication: Family Hub

This part of the tour ends in the Smart Kitchen booth, which is showcasing the latest version of the innovative Family Hub fridge. The kitchen has become the epicenter of a global shift in how people utilize their home spaces. Recent studies show that almost half (46%) of Europeans now spend most of their leisure time in the kitchen*. As a result, Samsung Electronics has broadened the scope of its products for the kitchen, the center of everyday home life, through this year’s more evolved Family Hub.

The Family Hub has been designed with the understanding that convenience and personalization in food preparation is a priority for families, and so the Meal Planner capabilities suggest recipes based on your family’s food preferences, dietary restrictions and even food expiration dates for convenient weekly and monthly tailored meal plans – based on the ingredients already stored in the fridge and users’ taste. Visitors can get a feeling for just how hands-on this smart appliance is by interacting with the Family Hub’s dedicated touch-screen tablet.

With Bixby and Voice ID, the 2018 Family Hub does more than just react intelligently, and IFA attendees are experiencing the tailored responses Family Hub and Bixby can provide. Family Hub can recognize individual voices and match them to each family member’s profile. Users can start off their day just by asking “Hi Bixby, what’s new today?” and full, personalized information relevant to that user will appear instantly.

Family Hub not only offers you a personalized experience with just the one device, but thanks to SmartThings, consumers can also enjoy a connected living experience across Samsung appliances as well as other devices. You can control your robot vacuum cleaner, washing machine, and even your air conditioner, all from the Hub’s screen. With features such as this, Samsung and Family Hub endeavor to build technology geared towards making a real difference in consumers’ everyday home lives.

The Super AMOLED screens and Infinity Displays of the Galaxy S9 and S9+ maximize definition and space allowing viewers to see more. The Galaxy S9 and S9+ also integrate Dolby Atmos® 360-degree surround sound technology, which benefits all content through enhancements to sound quality and consistent playback volume, bringing entertainment to life through both regular stereo headphones and the device’s built-in speakers.

For the true multitasker, Multi-Window** allows users to simultaneously manage two windows on their screen, meaning on-the-move sports fans can keep an eye on the game in one window and use another app in the other window. For even greater flexibility, users can enable Landscape Mode and view the two windows side by side horizontally.

Last year Samsung’s European home appliances business grew five times faster than the market. As a result of this momentum, Samsung participated in EuroCucina 2018, a showcase for new trends, designs and technologies for European kitchens.

The European built-in market is worth $18.5 billion annually, accounting for 40% of the global built-in market. Samsung’s premium built-in appliances, equipped with and IoT technology, are positioned at the center of the market. The opportunity to experience the kitchen of the future at the Samsung booth attracted the attention of many visitors at the exhibition.

Consumer-Led Innovations

Samsung displayed its full built-in product lineup at EuroCucina. The range included its Twin Cooling Plus technology refrigerator, Virtual Flame cooktop and Waterwall dishwasher. The company also unveiled the new Dual Cook Flex oven at the event.

The Dual Cook Flex zone highlighted how the oven can adapt to the needs of its users. Its innovative Dual Cook technology, for example, allows independent access to the upper oven compartment without compromising on cooking performance in the lower compartment. With research indicating that European oven users are cooking multiple dishes simultaneously three times a week on average, the oven’s Dual Cook system allows users to set different temperatures and time settings for each compartment, giving them greater control over simultaneous cooking.

Dual Cook Flex offers a range of IoT features. Consumers can remotely preheat, monitor and control the oven from anywhere with the SmartThings app. What’s more, the Cooking Guide makes setting recommendations based on ingredients and type of food being prepared.

The booth also demonstrated how Samsung’s industry-first innovations in the home appliance market provide a seamless experience and make a real difference in the kitchen. Samsung’s Twin Cooling Plus technology, which independently controls the refrigerator and freezer, was showcased in a transparent display to best illustrate how the system works. There were also zones exhibiting the Virtual Flame cooktop, an induction stove that mimics the appearance of flames to provide more intuitive visual control over the heat, and the WaterWall dishwasher that delivers remarkable cleaning results with a streaming wall of water.

Seamless Kitchen Connectivity

As people spend more of their time at home in the kitchen, and the space fulfills more roles than ever before, smart technology has become increasingly more important. Yet digitization of the kitchen has been slower than other key spaces of the home.

In addition to exhibiting the IoT capabilities of the Dual Cook Flex oven, Samsung demonstrated the seamless connectivity of key home IoT products at EuroCucina 2018.

On display was the latest generation of Family Hub integrated with SmartThings, Samsung’s IoT platform, which offers seamless connectivity between any IoT device using one app and a single cloud that manages all your devices. The smart refrigerator provides a center point for connecting all devices in the home, and is equipped with features such as Bixby, Meal Planner, Shopping List and Recipes to enhance your smart cooking experience.

Recent strides towards connectivity and innovation have resulted in 90 percent of Samsung products, including smartphones and TVs, being IoT-applicable. Thanks to the company’s collaborative efforts based on the Open Connectivity Foundation, the SmartThings ecosystem is operable and compatible with even more devices and brands.

Stylish Built-in Design

With premium designs such as Samsung’s black stainless-steel built-in packages, the exhibit modeled the streamlined look of the modern kitchen, which couples elegant design with intelligent technology.

Based on a philosophy of thoughtful design, today’s kitchen embraces simplicity, timelessness and an aesthetic that emphasizes minimalism while maximizing usability. This “Flat Design” favors clean lines, hidden displays and seamless integration. Samsung’s built-in appliances, such as its premium flat design refrigerators, have a precision engineered flat face which sits flush to the counter front.

Samsung Electronics acquired the luxury US built-in brand ‘Dacor’ in 2016 and has worked with various other partners, such as Nolte in Germany, Scavolini and Veneta Cucine in Italy to increase the competitiveness of premium built-in appliances as part of the company’s commitment to ‘bring the kitchen to life’. As well as displaying the ‘Dacor Modernist Collection’, Samsung also collaborated with numerous European luxury brands such as Nolte at this exhibition. Amongst these designs, the Dacor built-in refrigerator, which imbues a sense of luxury with its porcelain inside, has attracted significant attention.

Integrating smart technology with appliances and pursuing further innovations will transform the way we cook and interact in the kitchen, as Samsung aims to provide a more seamless, connected experience throughout the home.

Consumer-centric Innovation with New Dual Cook Flex

Samsung is introducing its full built-in product lineup at EuroCucina, and among the range of unparalleled kitchen solutions is the brand new Dual Cook Flex oven. Its EU-industry-first innovation “Flexible Door” gives consumers independent access to the upper oven compartment without losing heat and compromising cooking performance in the lower compartment. The upper and lower compartments can even be used as one bigger compartment for large dishes by removing the divider.

Dual Cook Flex also makes it easier to prepare multiple dishes using the Dual Cook system. Consumers can set two different temperatures and times for each compartment to achieve the best taste possible during simultaneous cooking. The Dual Cook also prevents odor mixing between compartments, ensuring optimal cooking performance. Enabling consumers to use the upper compartment only, the Dual Cook also enhances energy efficiency by cutting down preheating time and overall energy usage.¹

Dual Cook Flex offers a range of smart features for optimized cooking. For example, consumers can conveniently start preheating the oven and remotely monitor and control cooking conditions while on the go via the SmartThings app. In addition, the Cooking Guide recommends the best cooking mode, temperature, and cooking time based on the ingredients and type of food being made.

Smarter Living with AI/IoT Solution

As part of Samsung’s presence at EuroCucina, there will be demonstrations of how key home IoT products work together seamlessly. Samsung plans to maximize its smart/IoT leadership by providing customized smart solutions. Visitors will be able to experience Samsung’s unique home IoT technologies through Family Hub and its smart built-in offerings.

On display will be the superior smart connectivity of the Dual Cook Flex and the latest generation of Family Hub that is integrated with SmartThings. Innovative Technology and Flat Design in the Kitchen

At the Samsung booth, visitors will be able to experience and understand the company’s unique kitchen technologies. This includes the WaterWall dishwasher that perfectly cleans all dishes from corner to corner, and Virtual Flame cook top, which provides the intuitive visual control of flames. Samsung’s Twin Cooling Plus technology will be showcased as well, in a transparent display to exhibit how the system controls the refrigerator and freezer independently.

In addition, Samsung’s premium designs will also be on display, including flat design, a minimalist design that seamlessly harmonizes all lines into one and maximizes usability. Samsung also displays its black stainless-steel built-in package and Dacor’s Modernist collection.

To further demonstrate Samsung’s innovative and smart appliances, Samsung will host a launch conference for partners and media on April 18^th at the Auditorium of Salone del Mobile and an exclusive Samsung Club des Chefs cooking show the same day, led by Michelin-starred chefs at the Samsung booth in Hall 15. EuroCucina, and its ancillary Technology for the Kitchen Event, runs as part of Salone del Mobile Milano from April 17^th to the 22^nd.

In the Morning

Because the new Family Hub features Samsung’s intelligent voice assistant, Bixby, now, when you want to get things done, all you have to do is say the word. A great example is the Morning Brief function, which makes managing family schedules and activities a whole lot easier.

Family members can start off their day by simply saying, “Hi, Bixby. What’s new today?”, and Family Hub will compile a brief that includes the information they need – such as the day’s news, weather, and their personal schedule – for quick and easy consumption. Because Family Hub can recognize each family member by voice, everyone gets the info that’s relevant to them.

At the Office

Family Hub’s Memo app allows family members to draw or type messages and record voice notes to send from their smartphones to the Family Hub, and vice versa. Even kids without smartphones are able to send their parents messages through the smart refrigerator.

Think of the app as a sort of digital family bulletin board that family members can post to from anywhere. So, for example, if you’re rushing to the office after a weekend that’s left the house in need of some sprucing up, you can update the kids’ chore list while you make your way to your desk.

On the Way Home

Family Hub has always offered intuitive tools that make it easy for families to plan and prepare great meals. These include features like the View Inside app, which simplifies stopping by the store after work to buy ingredients for dinner by allowing you to scan the content of your fridge remotely, to ensure that you pick up just what you need.

And if by the time you get home you’re still not quite sure what to cook, Family Hub can also offer customized recipe suggestions based on your family members’ dietary constraints and much more.

On Weekends

Family Hub’s SmartThings integration makes household chores like vacuuming a breeze, allowing you to easily control a wide range of connected devices.

The new Family Hub also gives households the ability to seamlessly monitor and control, via a single app, the wide and ever-growing range of products and services that are compatible with the SmartThings IoT platform.

When catching up on rest on the weekend, families can utilize the refrigerator’s SmartThings support to take the hassle out of household tasks. With a simple tap of their Family Hub’s screen, users may start their vacuum, adjust their thermostat, and do much more.

You can even use Family Hub to help keep an eye on the little ones, making it easy to check on a sleeping baby in another room; see who’s at the door when the doorbell rings, using the Ring app; and, when you’re ready for bed, turn off all the lights with a tap.

These are just a few of the ways that Family Hub helps modern families simplify daily life. Family Hub is a vital part of Samsung’s vision for connected living – a vision that’s not reflective of some far-off future, but ready to be plugged in to consumers’ homes right now.

Samsung has created a “Samsung City” at its CES booth, which showcases the communication and connectivity among all of Samsung’s devices. What’s most noteworthy, however, is that the innovations are not just demos – all of the devices and services featured will be available to consumers in the near future, beginning in 2018.

Across twelve different zones at Samsung’s booth, participants will see what their lives with Samsung will look like in the coming years and beyond, and how our concepts of home, business and mobility will soon change forever.

Home: The Center of Life

Samsung’s products will continuously become more intelligent, which will lead to major changes in how we live.

For example, they already enable you to enjoy content more easily and continuously. Instead of your content being locked to one device in one room, it can follow you wherever you go. Content such as live video streams can also move between devices such as your Galaxy Note8 and QLED TV. Likewise, music from your mobile device can be streamed to your TV or connected speaker.

But with Bixby, life is even more simplified. If you start watching a TV show in the living room, you can say, “Bixby, I will keep watching in the bedroom,” and Bixby will pause your show and resume it when you get to the bedroom. All the associated tasks and devices can also move rooms with you and Bixby can turn the devices off in the living room if it’s now empty.

In the near future, you could even use Bixby to help you take better care of your health. If you were to take a photo of something you were eating, for instance, Bixby Vision could automatically calculate the number of calories in the meal, and the Galaxy Gear smartwatch could track calorie intake. Using this data, the Family Hub fridge could recommend recipes to help you manage your caloric intake.

These home technology demonstrations are based on the ability of Samsung’s devices to communicate with one another. The company’s technology goes far beyond the capabilities of a regular AI assistant.

Business & Mobility: Expanding Intelligence Beyond the Home

Look outside the home and you’ll see Samsung has brought AI and IoT innovation there, too.

For instance, the Samsung Flip, a newly developed digital signage solution, supports wireless synchronization between a laptop and a smartphone, thereby expanding the office experience. Ideas captured by the Samsung Notebook 9 Pen or Galaxy Note8 can therefore be displayed immediately on the Samsung Flip for brainstorming. Seamless sharing on a mobile device via NFC is also available, helping to bring about a collaborative workspace where creative ideas can be exchanged freely.

Bixby: A Key Piece of Intelligent IoT

Bixby was introduced, in part, to address an issue that has limited IoT technologies’ widespread adoption: the perception that their interfaces are too complicated for users to comfortably take advantage of them.

Bixby adds intelligence to Samsung devices connected to the SmartThings platform. Adding Bixby’s voice support to a wide range of household products will not only make them easier to use, but will also allow users to speak to Bixby on one device and command it to access and control multiple others.

At this year’s CES, Samsung has pledged to integrate Bixby into all of its connected devices by 2020, with select 2018 Samsung Smart TVs and Family Hub refrigerators in 2018. This will ultimately allow more consumers to enjoy harmonized IoT experiences at home.

Bixby Makes Smart TVs Smarter

Samsung has announced that beginning this year, select Samsung Smart TVs will be Bixby-enabled. Bixby’s command-driven interface creates a smarter and simpler approach to controlling your TV and other connected devices, and allows you to streamline how you access the information you need and enjoy your favorite content.

For example, the interface lets you seamlessly transition viewing sessions between your Bixby-enabled smartphone and displays, so you can pick up right where you left off when you finish your commute or move to another room.

And when a new episode of your favorite TV show is about to start, Bixby’s intelligence will allow it to automatically send a notification to your phone that, if tapped, will instantly command your Samsung Smart TV to tune in to the right channel. You can even ask Bixby to dim the lights and pull up one of your favorite films for movie night.

In addition to streamlining entertainment, the TVs’ Bixby support allows users to reduce the number of steps required to carry out everyday tasks like preparing dinner – by commanding their TV to peek inside their Family Hub, for instance.

It’s Making Seamless Connection Routine

Bixby integration has made Samsung’s powerful Family Hub refrigerators even more so.

Unveiled at CES 2018, Samsung’s latest Family Hub refrigerators feature a variety of intelligent ways for users to manage their food, entertainment and IoT devices. Having Bixby in the mix allows for even more ways for families to keep their household connected and organized.

For a start, the new Family Hub’s Bixby support and multiple voice recognition technology allow the refrigerators to provide individual family members with customized information based on their preferences. So, for instance, if a user asked Bixby “What’s new today?”, it would pull up a personalized morning brief that included their schedule for the day as well as news and weather from their preferred sources, and tell them how long it will take to get to the office.

For those times when you can’t quite decide what to cook, Bixby will allow Family Hub to recommend a recipe for a delectable dish based on what you have in your fridge and in accordance with your dietary needs. You’ll also be able to command Family Hub to check on the status of compatible connected devices like your Samsung QuickDrive washing machine, and Bixby will let you know exactly how much time is left in your wash cycle.

Looking Forward

Samsung’s advancements in artificial intelligence and smart technologies are helping the company usher in an era of more open and connected IoT experiences.

Integrating Bixby into more devices, and exploring ways to make more objects intelligent, will eventually allow more households to experience the benefits of a seamlessly connected IoT ecosystem.

IoT interactions will be natural, and our smart devices will be so seamlessly woven into the fabric of our lives that we’ll spend less time managing them and more time enjoying our day.

We caught up with Geunbae Lee, the Head of the AI Center, to talk about how Samsung plans to lead the field of artificial intelligence.

Q. The integrated AI Center, with Samsung Research, was officially launched last November. What is your vision for the center?

With technology innovation rife within the AI sector, our vision is to prepare industry-leading AI-based solutions in the areas of recognition, thinking and movement to compete with other key market players by 2020. We will also enhance the competitiveness of our existing businesses. Furthermore, the AI Center will contribute to not only new business and product creation but also effective management, as we are applying AI throughout the manufacturing, marketing and data analysis processes.

Q. What projects are the AI Center currently working on?

In 2018, the first year of the AI Center, we plan to focus on establishing AI platforms which will serve as the foundation for Samsung’s AI technology. We will achieve this first by collecting AI research capacity from within Samsung and recruiting global talent. Our mid- to long-term goal is to show leadership in AI technology development along certain major themes including virtual assistants, robotics and data.

Q. What are your thoughts on how AI will progress in the future? How will Samsung lead the conversation within the industry?

Samsung has already demonstrated its leadership in the field of virtual assistants through Bixby. In order to maintain and expand this capability, we are going to not only develop innovative AI-related products and services, but also establish global AI hubs around the world. For example, we can cooperate with the world’s best universities and communicate with external industry talent through regular, open forums. By doing so, we are planning to take the world’s awareness of Samsung’s AI capabilities one step further.

Q. How is Samsung integrating AI into its various products, including home appliances (Chef Collection, Family Hub, Smart TV, etc.)? Any examples of how it is being used?

Bixby, which supported only Korean and English at the beginning, is now provided in Mandarin Chinese, and it will support more languages in the future. It is also innovating the user experience by connecting itself not only to smartphones but to multiple devices and services. Moreover, based on sensor data in appliances like air conditioners, unusual signals are caught and addressed before they develop into severe issues. This shows that through innovation, combined with existing devices and services, smart electronics are evolving into intelligent electronics.

Q. Samsung has AI research labs in Korea, Canada, the UK and Russia. How will you expand upon these labs and what kind of synergistic effect do you expect?

Samsung is conducting AI research based on local insights through 22 overseas research labs in 15 countries, including the US and the UK. Samsung is also planning to establish new hubs in areas with specialized AI capabilities and will focus on finding the best talent to increase competitiveness. By strengthening our global networks, Samsung will continue to build a single robust, flexible and expandable platform to integrate and optimally utilize AI technology. The AI Center will be at the center of this development by working closely with our global network based on each region’s individual competitive advantages and capabilities.

Samsung Electronics today at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) outlined its vision and strategy for intelligent Internet of Things (IoT) experiences.

During today’s press conference, Samsung demonstrated its unique ability to make seamlessly connected consumer experiences across Samsung devices at home, at the office and on-the-go. Samsung has been working to make all Samsung products IoT ready by 2020. In addition, the company announced today its plan to advance IoT adoption via an open, consistent and intelligent platform.

Intelligence of Things for Everyone 

Samsung’s IoT philosophy is built on open innovation making it accessible to more people and when infused with intelligence, can personalize their experience. Today’s fragmented and complex IoT ecosystem is a barrier to adoption. For IoT to be approachable and accessible it requires scale and open innovation. Thanks to a robust portfolio of products including TVs, appliances and smartphones, and Samsung’s leadership to deliver 5G connectivity, Samsung is well-positioned to deliver an open IoT ecosystem via SmartThings.

Samsung is working with partners such as the Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF) to set common industry standards. OCF is the largest IoT standardization body in the world and Samsung’s ARTIK chip, air conditioner and Family Hub refrigerator have already been certified by the association for interoperability criteria needed for IoT.

In spring 2018, Samsung will unite its IoT applications, including Samsung Connect, Smart Home, Smart View and more into the SmartThings app to connect and control any SmartThings-enabled device directly from their phone, TV, or car from a single application. Additionally, Samsung announced plans to connect HARMAN Ignite to the SmartThings Cloud, moving the IoT experience beyond the smart home to the car. As a result, consumers will be able to manage their connected home from the car and vice versa.

An integral part of Samsung’s vision is to connect devices and make them intelligent. With Bixby, Samsung is bringing its personalized intelligence service to more devices. In 2018, select Samsung Smart TVs and new Family Hub refrigerators will have voice control via Bixby to make everyday tasks easier. With devices and services working together and infused with intelligence, in-home activities become easier.

Because increased connectivity requires improved security, Samsung announced that it has incorporated its trusted Samsung Knox technology into its connected devices, including Smart TVs and Smart Signages, additional mobile products and Smart appliances. Building the Connected Future

Samsung highlighted its ongoing commitment to investing in breakthrough technologies. In 2017, Samsung spent more than $14 billion on R&D. The company also increased investments through Samsung NEXT – a key initiative to accelerate its transformation into an integrated hardware and software company.

Samsung also created a new AI Center as part of its newly consolidated Samsung Research unit. The AI Center, which includes four labs in Toronto, Montreal, Cambridge (UK) and Russia in 2018, will be coupled with Samsung’s ongoing work in Korea and Silicon Valley and the company’s M&A activities to drive its AI ambitions forward.

Seamless Device Experiences

New products and services announced at CES 2018 highlight exactly how Samsung is making progress to create seamless IoT experiences.

• Home: Starting this year, Samsung Smart TVs will create a connected fabric between devices to provide effortless log-in for users from the moment the TV is unboxed. The new Family Hub refrigerators offer a wide range of smart features like syncing food storage with meal preparation, and keeping family members better connected and organized. Samsung Smart TVs and Family Hub refrigerators features Bixby, giving TVs greater access to applications, the ability to easily search movies by genre and actors, and display personal photos while Family Hub refrigerators will be able to recognize individual voices of family members and give personalized information such as news, weather and calendar updates. Samsung Smart TVs and Family Hub refrigerators will also operate on a single connected cloud platform, the SmartThings Cloud, serving as a smart dashboard to monitor and control connected devices.

• Office: Samsung is redefining the concept of the traditional office with flexible solutions that fit the needs of the modern mobile workforce. The Samsung Notebook 9 Pen brings power, portability and performance to the notebook PC for those whose jobs don’t end when they leave the office. The 55-inch Samsung Flip interactive digital flip chart, simplifies office collaboration by connecting seamlessly with group members’ smartphones and notebooks for faster content and idea sharing. Up to four different participants can introduce content or annotate directly on screen at the same time using either their fingers or an embedded pen.

• Mobility: Samsung is helping to lead the transition to 5G networks that will usher in a new set of connected experiences. Samsung is partnering with wireless carriers and broadband providers to conduct the first customer trials of 5G connectivity with up to 100 times faster speeds than the 4G LTE available on phones today. With 5G connectivity, Samsung demonstrated its vision for more comfortable driving. The Samsung Digital Cockpit shows how cars will become seamlessly connected with other ‘things’ as part of IoT. The new dashboard design, along with Bixby, allows drivers to easily control the in-car experience and connected devices at home through voice, touch, gesture and context-based triggers. Family Hub in 2018 offers a wide range of smart features that allow consumers to do what they could not do before. These include syncing up food storage with meal preparation, keeping family members better connected and organized, and providing enhanced entertainment. Family Hub is also more intuitive and intelligent with the addition of Bixby voice control and its integration with Samsung’s SmartThings IoT ecosystem.

Simplifying Life with Connected Home Control

The new Family Hub works with the SmartThings ecosystem, allowing users to control and monitor their connected home from the Family Hub screen. The SmartThings app seamlessly connects the Family Hub with hundreds of Samsung and third party compatible connected devices. So now, in addition to seeing what’s inside their fridge from the grocery store or leaving a note on the White Board to remind the kids to clean their rooms after school, users can do countless other things without ever leaving the kitchen. These include seeing who is at the front door with the ring doorbell, adjusting the thermostat, checking on a sleeping baby in the next room, and more, right from the refrigerator screen.

Enhancing Food Management

Family Hub helps consumers manage food, with the View Inside app that enables users to see inside the fridge from anywhere. New for 2018, Meal Planner takes food management to a more personalized level by providing recipes for the family based on food preferences, dietary restrictions and food expirations dates. Family Hub also saves time and money with a new Deals app that gives users the ability to find great bargains and save them directly to the Shopping List or loyalty card.

Strengthening Family Connections

The new Family Hub keeps the family more closely connected and organized, with the customized ability to share calendars, photos and notes. With Bixby, Family Hub can also recognize individual voices and provide personalized information based on preferences. Ask “Hi Bixby, what’s new today?” and it will provide a read out of the news, weather and calendar updates specifically tailored to the user.

Creating New Ways to Have Fun at Home

With innovative TV and music options, the original Family Hub transformed the kitchen into an area for socializing with family and friends. Users can access millions of songs through various music streaming platforms and live radio apps, and mirror their Samsung Smart TV¹. The new Family Hub also features AKG Premium Quality Sound Speaker for sound that is deep in bass and rich in mid-range². Additionally, users can now stream content from their smartphone to the Family Hub refrigerator.

Samsung is expanding the Family Hub’s range of content with new collaborations with leading companies like HomeAdvisor, Pinterest, The Weather Company and Buzzfeed’s Tasty. Samsung also continues to collaborate with key partners including allrecipes, ring, and Grubhub to further refine and enhance the kitchen experience and promote smart lifestyle choices.

Samsung will expand the platform to four new 4D FDR models, bringing the total to 14. This will ensure that there is a Family Hub configuration to meet the needs of all consumers.

AI – Where Are We Now and Where Are We Going?

Since it was first envisioned in the 1950s, AI has made a palpable impact on our lives, giving us practical speech recognition, more effective web search and self-driving cars, among other innovations.

Earlier this month, Google’s AlphaGo AI program made news by mastering the ancient Chinese board game Go in just three days without any human assistance. As it has made continual strides as a global company, Samsung has ranked as one of the top 10 brands on the Interbrand rankings from 2012 to 2017, demonstrating continual growth in brand value.

This year’s achievement is particularly meaningful given some of the challenges that Samsung has faced, and overcome, in the past year. For example, Interbrand, in its evaluation, cited among various factors, Samsung’s exemplary, fast recovery from last year’s Galaxy Note7 crisis, the company’s successful launches of flagship products, and its continued stellar financial performance.

In particular, Samsung’s mobile business reconfirmed its market leadership through the successful launch of the Galaxy S8. Samsung’s memory division also performed strongly, with its record profits contributing to the rise in brand value. Samsung’s digital appliances business introduced innovative and award-winning new products, developed from deep consumer insights, like the Family Hub refrigerator and AddWash washing machine. Samsung’s visual display division also broke new ground in the TV market with the new QLED TV as well as The Frame, a new lifestyle TV for the home.

“Our efforts to make meaningful progress to improve people’s lives contributed to the rise in brand value,” said YH Lee, CMO of Samsung Electronics. “Our ranking this year is a positive sign that demonstrates our efforts to regain trust have resonated with global consumers.”

This year’s Interbrand’s Best Global Brands will be announced at the World Trade Center in New York City on September 27.

Samsung’s Growth in Brand Value

One thing, however, has always remained the same and helped the trade show grow, and that’s this: Each year at IFA, electronics manufacturers present their latest consumer innovations, attracting attention from all over the world.

Samsung has presented its technical innovations in Berlin since 1991, and is one of the most prominent exhibitors at IFA today.

‘The Great German Radio and Phonographic Exhibition’

“Dear present and absent ones. When you listen to the radio, also spare a thought for how humanity obtained this wonderful instrument. The wellspring of all technical achievement is the divine curiosity, the ludic drive of the tinkering and pondering researcher, and no less the constructive imagination of the technical inventor.”¹

These were the words with which one of IFA’s most famous guests, Albert Einstein, opened the “Great German Radio and Phonographic Exhibition” – as IFA was originally known – in Berlin in 1930. The radio – the latest and, arguably, most important technical achievement in mass communications at that time – was the star of the show, and Einstein himself presented the exciting new technology to event attendees.

Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Stuttgart

The first IFA trade show took place in December of 1924. The inaugural event gathered a total of 242 exhibitors, who fascinated crowds with their latest technological innovations for a total of twelve days.

The trade show was held each year until 1939, when the outbreak of WWII and the subsequent reconstruction forced it into hiatus. IFA made its return in Düsseldorf in 1950 and, on its 20^th anniversary, in 1957, moved to Frankfurt and added “television” to its title. Reconstruction operations in Germany would lead IFA to shift its location from Frankfurt to Stuttgart and then Berlin, only to return to Düsseldorf in the end.

Since 1971, the trade show has taken place exclusively in Berlin, under the official name of “Internationale Funkausstellung” – hence “IFA”. gfu, a corporation that promotes the advancement of consumer electronics, came onboard two years later, and has been organizing IFA² ever since.

The innovation cycles of many products have grown shorter and shorter over the years, and eventually, in 2005, IFA became an annual event.

Samsung – an Innovation Driver and Major Attraction

Samsung has been a fixture at IFA ever since it first exhibited at the trade show in 1991³. During that IFA, 26 years ago, Samsung presented screens and televisions in a 660-square-meter space.

2003 marked an important juncture in Samsung’s relationship with IFA. A move to Hall 20 meant that a substantially larger exhibition space would be available, turning Samsung into one of the show’s major exhibitors.

With keynote speeches in 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2014, Samsung strengthened its position as a global brand, establishing ground-breaking technologies and setting future trends. In 2008, for example, Park Jong-Woo, the then-President of Samsung Electronics Digital Media, predicted that the entertainment industry would take a gigantic leap forward by seamlessly networking a variety of devices. Nowadays, smartphones and tablets easily hook up to users’ TVs and Bluetooth speakers, and even some fridges and washing machines can be controlled on the go.

2014: Samsung Becomes IFA’s Largest Exhibitor

2014 saw the opening of CityCube Berlin, which IFA’s host venue, Messe Berlin, invested over 83 million euros to build. Samsung moved into the three-story cube – which, along with featuring the largest product-exhibition space (approx. 6,000 m²), also houses several rooms (approx. 2,500 m²) for presentations and sales meetings – as soon as it was completed. The location has been used exclusively by Samsung at IFA ever since.

More exhibition space also opens up new possibilities. Samsung’s individual product divisions were previously presented spread across several halls, but the move to CityCube Berlin meant that they could be showcased under one roof. Today, Samsung has become IFA’s largest exhibitor, with 8,700 square meters of hall space.

Picture quality remains one of the most important focuses for TVs, and is one of the hottest attractions for the trade show. Over the last eight years, the TV industry has mastered the leap from HD to Full HD to UHD resolution – each of which has been successfully established in the mass market.

IFA has also served as a popular showcase for introducing new product categories in other areas. In 2010, Samsung presented its first tablet to the world with the Galaxy Tab. One year later, the Galaxy Note marked the beginning of large-screen premium smartphones, or ‘phablets’. Samsung’s first smartwatch, the Galaxy Gear, was introduced in 2013, laying the foundation for Samsung’s smartwatch portfolio. And in 2014, the Galaxy ecosystem was further expanded with the Gear S and Gear VR.

This year, too, visitors to Samsung’s IFA booth are treated to a great many innovations and technical highlights, such as QLED TV, The Frame, the QuickDrive washing machine, Family Hub refrigerator, mobile devices, portable SSDs and more.

This year, the company is introducing an array of innovative products including Family Hub refrigerators with more advanced voice capabilities, and a Samsung Connect app that’s capable of seamlessly products integration across the cloud.

New Smart Home Innovations

Samsung has introduced advanced voice capabilities to Family Hub that allow users to talk to the smart refrigerators to use it, and will expand the voice functionality to European markets this year. This convenient enhancement will make it possible to carry out a wide range of tasks, from looking inside the fridge to playing music, by simply speaking to the fridge.

Samsung is also actively working to evolve Family Hub into an IoT control center, to the point where users will be able to control all of their home’s connected appliances through voice recognition. Just imagine being able to summon your robotic vacuum to clean up the kitchen or monitor your laundry cycle while you cook. The possibilities are endless.

Samsung is also helping to deliver a smart home with the Samsung Connect app, which is compatible with all devices and operating systems, and allows users to control Samsung products through the cloud. With Bixby in Samsung smartphones, it is possible to control the Samsung Connect app by voice recognition.

Samsung’s remote diagnosis service will be upgraded by linking with the Samsung Connect app. Customers will also be able to receive guidance through their smartphones to identify and solve problems with Samsung’s smart home appliances in real-time.

An Expanding External Ecosystem Based in the Cloud

Samsung is the first in the industry to receive the OCF certification for its smart TVs, Family Hub refrigerators and air conditioners, and intends to expand the certification to all of its home appliances throughout the year. The OCF certification is a standard that enables compatibility between the products of member companies, strengthening connectivity so that different kinds of devices may communicate effectively with one another. In addition to Samsung, more than 390 companies have joined the OCF.

Samsung is also working with various third parties to integrate voice support for functions including Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant into smart home appliances including its refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners and robot vacuums, and Google Home support in its robotic vacuums as well. As the first in the industry to apply open APIs to home appliances, Samsung plans to focus on expanding services through collaboration with various smart home companies.

Samsung will continue to contribute to creating meaningful changes in consumers’ lives and strengthening the industry’s IoT ecosystem. Stay tuned for more exciting developments ahead.

Samsung Electronics announced today that it will expand the voice recognition function of the Family Hub refrigerator to European countries in the second half of this year. It will also introduce the “Samsung Connect” smart home feature for the first time at IFA 2017.

Samsung has already applied cloud-based voice features to the Family Hub in Korea and the U.S., and will add European languages on a phased basis this year, starting with British English, German, French, and Italian.

“Samsung has continuously enhanced the Family Hub since its first introduction at CES 2016, focusing on improving consumer lifestyles,” said JS Park, Executive Vice President of the Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “Our endeavor to advance the smart features of home appliances has always been closely tied to our mission to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individual consumers and families with innovations that matter.”

In addition to touch command, the Family Hub’s voice capabilities provide a new way to interact with the refrigerator. Users can ask for the time and weather updates, search the internet, read news articles, play music and radio, add items to their shopping list, and even view inside of the refrigerator without opening the door.

Standing at the center of the home, Family Hub is now ready to help households take control of their various Samsung smart devices. Samsung Connect enhances this as a platform capable of connecting and controlling IoT devices regardless of their operating system, such as Android or iOS. Samsung Connect is now integrated into the Family Hub.

Users will be able to turn on and monitor their AddWash^TM washing machine, or tell their POWERbot^TM vacuum cleaner to begin cleaning up the living room from Family Hub’s interactive screen while cooking or entertaining in the kitchen.

Furthermore, Samsung continues to grow Family Hub’s partner ecosystem with innovative new services and content. More than 100 partner companies collaborate with Samsung’s Family Hub platform across North America, Europe, and Asia/Pacific. As an example, Instacart, Shoprite and FreshDirect provide consumers in the U.S. with seamless e-Commerce shopping experiences. European versions of the Samsung Family Hub feature European retailers like Supermercato24 and Eataly to provide grocery shopping.

For news and entertainment, consumers around the world can enjoy their favorite music on various music streaming services like Spotify, or stay up-to-date with the latest news via NPR or upday. Lastly, cooking enthusiasts can find daily inspiration from recipe apps like Allrecipes, Whisk!, and Samsung Club des Chefs.

Samsung Electronics today launched its new brand campaign for Home Appliances in 10 countries around the world, highlighting its mission to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. The new campaign video contains moments when consumers encounter Samsung’s helpful appliances and use them to improve an aspect of their day.

Through this campaign, Samsung aims to convey the purpose behind its continued efforts to develop new technology that puts the diverse needs of consumers first. With smart innovations and solutions that thoughtfully foresee consumer needs, Samsung offers brilliant value that not only can be immediately recognized but that also leads to the question: “why didn’t we think of this before?”

The goal of the ongoing research initiative is to identify common difficulties that the elderly and people with disabilities face when using household appliances. Each time Samsung invites these consumers to provide their valuable insight, they reveal new ways to improve its appliances’ accessibility, ultimately helping Samsung design innovations that make it easy for all users to experience seamless convenience at home.

Innovating for Ease of Use

Participants sampled a wide range of Samsung appliances, including its latest refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, vacuums and ovens, in the Campus’s Home Experience Lab, commenting afterward on the impact that enhancements such as voice support and ergonomic designs had on ease of use.

As one participant explained, “[For me], analog products have always been relatively easy to use, but digital appliances can be more difficult, due to features like touchscreens that change the way they work. But when I tried using the appliances that had voice support, I thought I could use them easily, even by myself.”

A Lineup of Inclusive Offerings

Some of Samsung’s latest home appliances, including its flagship Family Hub refrigerator line, as well as select vacuum cleaners and air conditioners available in Korea, feature advanced voice-recognition or voice-guidance technology that makes them easy for anyone, including those with various visual impairments, to use.

Voice guidance and recognition are deeply rooted into the Family Hub refrigerator’s intuitive interface, allowing the visually impaired to easily access the wide range of useful information that the smart appliances were designed to provide. This includes auditory updates on their refrigerator’s contents, as well as voice readouts of Family Hub’s morning briefs, which inform users of the day’s weather, and recipes in the refrigerator’s built-in cooking apps.

In addition, the built-in displays of Family Hub refrigerators in the U.S. market allow users with color blindness to convert their displays to black and white for easier reading, and allow short-statured users to lower their display to an optimal height.

The Virtual Flame that lights up Samsung’s Induction Range also makes it easier for users with visual impairments to comfortably manage meals. Built-in LED lights shine onto pots and pans to create the impression of flames on a gas cooktop, allowing users to check, with a simple glance, whether the range is off or on and even at what strength.

Lastly, the Samsung Connect app, which offers users a control center for a wide variety of smart home appliances, has also been optimized with voice guidance, making it easier for visually impaired users to control their devices.

Samsung’s efforts to identify new ways to deliver convenient and inclusive products to consumers’ homes underline its ongoing commitment to developing user-friendly products and services that offer anyone access to cutting-edge innovation.

Transforming Life in the Kitchen

The new Family Hub’s advanced features remove the usual guesswork from food management. The refrigerator’s built-in View Inside cameras, for instance, allow users to digitally label their food with expiration dates, and use a mobile device to peek inside their fridge from wherever they may be.

Family Hub’s new voice-recognition technology makes it even easier to take advantage of the refrigerator’s convenient features. When family members are busy preparing food or entertaining in the kitchen, simple voice commands provide a means to request a recipe or weather report, add an item to the grocery list, start playing music, or see what’s inside the fridge.

This advanced technology has been integrated across several Family Hub apps, and leverages contextual awareness to offer users a personalized experience that allows them to utilize familiar, colloquial commands.

Partnerships with grocery-delivery service Instacart and Groceries by MasterCard add additional convenience to users’ food management. Currently available in the U.S., the easy-to-use apps allow users to replenish their fridge with ease by ordering groceries directly from their Family Hub fridge. Other region and country specific apps are available and make the Family Hub more geographically relevant.

Enhanced for Family Communications       

One aspect that has proven particularly popular with users since launch is the fridge’s ability to foster meaningful expression.

The refrigerators’ Whiteboard, Memo and Photo Album functions transform the touchscreen display into a digital bulletin board where family members can share photos, update calendars, hand-write notes to one another, and even send posts remotely with their phone.*

The new Family Hub’s updated interface streamlines those tasks, and will now allow each member of the family to create their own, unique profile. These profiles may be customized with avatars or, beginning later this year, users’ personal photos.

Family Hub’s latest entertainment partnerships with Spotify and TuneIn – two of the world’s leading media-streaming services – provide more options for users to bring their favorite music and programming into the kitchen.

A New Level of Connection

Later this year, Family Hub will also feature support for Samsung Connect, an app that made its debut with the release of the Galaxy S8 and offers users streamlined control over their connected homes.

With the app’s integration, Family Hub users will be able to seamlessly control selected Samsung smart devices – including smart lights, door locks, security cameras, speakers and other household products – with a few taps of their refrigerator’s display. This additional level of ‘smart’ connection will further cement the refrigerators’ position as a central hub for IoT-connected homes.

Owners of first-generation Family Hub models will also receive a software upgrade that will provide many of these new functions and apps.

Samsung’s latest enhancements to the Family Hub lineup demonstrate its commitment to utilizing innovative connections to deliver new levels of convenience to consumers’ homes.

Samsung Electronics announced that it won 49 iF Design Awards, including one Gold award, at the world-renowned International Forum Design Awards 2017. Thirty-five of the awards were given for superior product design, four for professional concept design, seven for communication design, and three for packaging design.

“Upgrading a product is easy but upgrading consumer lifestyle is difficult. We will continue to strive for design that entertains and fulfills the lives of our consumers through consumer-focused innovation,” said BK Yoon, President and CEO of Samsung Electronics and the Head of the Corporate Design Center at Samsung.

Samsung received the Gold award for the ArtPC Pulse, a premium desktop computer with advanced expandable modules. The ArtPC Pulse integrates a high-performance PC into a refined cylinder form. It can expand its function with extended modules for HDD storage and a 360-degree speaker in a detachable rotary structure. The award-winning design of the ArtPC Pulse includes minimalist styling on its fully metal body as the buttons and port are all located at the rear of the product.

In addition to the Gold award, Samsung won 34 other iF Design Awards in the product category:

Organized by the International Forum Design, the iF Design Awards began in Germany in 1953. Product submissions are based on a comprehensive evaluation of design, material suitability, innovativeness and seven additional categories: Product, Packaging, Communication, Interior Architecture, Professional Concept, Service Design, and Architecture.

When Samsung introduced its Family Hub refrigerators at last year’s CES, it did so with the goal of bringing new standards of convenience and innovation to consumers’ kitchens.

Family Hub 2.0 features key enhancements designed to take user experiences in the kitchen to a new level, including advanced voice functionality, user profiles, a streamlined interface and an expanded catalogue of built-in contents.

Samsung’s Vice President of Smart Appliances and Home IoT, Sunggy Koo, elaborated on Family Hub’s role, and explained how Samsung will build on the industry-leading IoT technology in the future.

The Next Step for the Smart Home

Samsung designed the Family Hub refrigerator to bring new levels of functionality to the appliance and ultimately transform its role in the kitchen.

Featuring a large touchscreen display and innovative features for food management, family communication and entertainment, Family Hub offers families a fun command center at the center of the home.

Koo explained Samsung’s commitment to building an ecosystem of connected, smart appliances centered around the kitchen-enriching refrigerator line.

“Family Hub is the center of Samsung’s smart home/IoT initiative,” Koo explained. “Samsung continues to innovate in these areas, and we expect to deliver more smart capabilities across all of our appliances and smart home infrastructure.”

Connecting More Kitchens

The first step in delivering more value to users’ kitchens is creating a wide selection of options to suit a variety of households. “Our users are all different, and have different needs, wants and tastes,” said Koo.

“To meet a variety of customer needs, Family Hub 2.0 takes flexibility and functionality to new levels, offering food management, family communication, entertainment features and voice capability to help consumers manage and enjoy their lives,” Koo continued.

Accordingly, Family Hub 2.0 will soon be available in more markets across the globe, and also see an expansion in its selection of available models. Family Hub 2.0 will encompass a full range of Samsung’s three- and four-door French Door refrigerator models, as well as its existing 4-Door Flex lineup, bringing the total number of available models from four to ten.

‘Easier and More Fun’

Going forward, Family Hub 2.0 and the line’s future generations will, as Koo put it, “continue to make consumers’ lives easier and more fun.”

Family Hub 2.0’s ‘fun’ aspects stem not only from its innovative entertainment functions, but from enhancements to its usability and app integration as well. Its advanced voice functionality, for example, allows users to easily control many built-in apps. Additionally, the expansion of the app catalogue itself reveals further cool new functions.

“We have so many great apps,” said Koo. “These apps make our customers’ lives more convenient, and have content localized to each market. For example, Eataly provides European customers the ability to order premium Italian groceries through Family Hub, while Groceries by MasterCard offers further convenience, allowing consumers to use their voice to handle e-commerce grocery shopping with Family Hub.

“Samsung is also closely collaborating with partners like GrubHub, Nomiku, Glympse, LidL, e-mart, Upday, Kakao, Ring, Spotify and iHeartRadio to provide more options for grocery shopping, cooking, home security and entertainment now and in the years to come.”

Powered by Allrecipes.com, Family Hub’s Recipe app offers users instant access to delicious dishes from around the world. As Allrecipes President Stan Pavlovsky pointed out, Family Hub’s philosophy of championing kitchen innovation is well in line with that of the world’s largest digital food brand.

At IFA 2016, Andrea Casalini, CEO of EATALY.net; provided his insights on the value he hopes the collaboration with Samsung will bring to users.

Q. What’s the concept of EATALY and how to do you strive to deliver that concept?

EATALY is a very interesting concept that goes back to the traditional and cultural roots of Italian food and wine. We aim to not only to deliver a product, but to combine a little bit of everything into a single location where people can learn and understand the traditions and history of Italian food, all the while having a good time with loved ones.

At EATALY, you can taste excellent cuisine, sample good wine sourced from artisanal producers or take a cooking class. Our objective is to deliver this consistently all over the world.

Q. EATALY currently delivers to over 25 countries around the globe, and is continuously growing. What do you think has made the company so successful?

Personally, I think it’s our authenticity. With EATALY, people can have a real Italian experience. But it isn’t just about Italian products. It’s more about the culture of cuisine and the passion for food. People seem to be really happy to experience this in our stores all around the world.

Another reason behind the success of the company is the products that we offer. The items that we sell at EATALY can’t easily be found at other stores. So it’s very special in that sense.

Q. Now people can purchase products from EATALY directly from the Family Hub refrigerator. What made you want to partner with Samsung on this device?

Technology is changing how we live, including how we shop for groceries. EATALY recognizes this, and, as a result, has been working to build our e-commerce platform for the past few years. We are always looking for new ways to make the experience more convenient and seamless for our customers.

I truly believe that the refrigerator is the core of the family at home. The Family Hub refrigerator, which allows people to purchase groceries right from their kitchen, is a perfect example of this. So, collaborating with Samsung to give users more convenient access to EATALY products was a no-brainer for us.

 Q. As someone well acquainted with high quality food, what Family Hub features do you find most useful?

In my home, it’s all about delivering the best quality food. If you want to serve really good food, then it has to be sourced properly and maintained in the very best way. I personally like the Family Hub’s Chef Zone, which is ideal for managing temperature-sensitive proteins. The refrigerator’s three inner-view cameras also help to ensure that ingredients are fresh, another important factor of high quality food.

Q. The Family Hub refrigerator is one that aims to better connect families. In your opinion, what is it about food that brings people—especially families—together?

First of all, food is something that is a natural and necessary part of life. It all goes back to our primary needs. But, it also has the ability to create a memorable experience. Nowadays, especially, our lives are incredibly hectic. So, the moment that family comes together to enjoy a meal and connect with one another is really special. This isn’t just an Italian tradition, it rings true in all parts of the world.

The gastronomic event transformed the heart of Samsung’s expansive booth into an intimate kitchen where three of the Club’s Michelin-starred members whipped up top-notch cuisine and demonstrated how, with the Family Hub refrigerator, you can too.

Launched in 2013, the Club des Chefs invites culinary masters from around the world to share their cooking expertise and contribute to the designs of innovative appliances like the touchscreen refrigerator. Over the course of the September 2 showcase, guests were shown how Family Hub’s intuitive interface and comprehensive suite of apps are redesigning the kitchen experience by reimagining the role of the our most important appliance.

Guests to the cooking show were greeted by their host, Byungsam Suh, Samsung Electronics Head of Digital Appliances Business. Mr. Suh began by spotlighting Family Hub’s unique ability to streamline food management, kitchen entertainment and family communication, before yielding the stage to the culinary masters.

After their introductions, Chefs Michel Troisgros, Elena Arzak and Michel Roux set to work. As they waited, guests were given an overview of some of Family Hub’s key functions, including inner-view cameras, digital food labeling, music playback, TV mirroring, photo and memo collaboration and recipe apps.

One of most exciting features was the new Club des Chefs app, which offers cooking insight, recipes and hands-on appliance demos straight from the chefs. Helping people feel more at home in their kitchen, and providing them with the tools to prepare delicious meals together.

The Club des Chefs’ newest member, Chef Michel Roux, found that aspect of the Family Hub particularly appealing. “Family dining is so important,” said Roux. “To put aside some time to be with your family, to cook and to eat together.

“I have always cooked with my parents, and I’ve cooked with my child as well, so for me it’s natural. But I think we have to get this message across that it can be so much fun. It’s a way of bonding and socializing, and we learn a lot more from each other.”

Each chef’s recipe—Chef Roux’s grilled tiger prawn appetizer, Chef Troisgros’ bifteck with spices main course and Chef Arzak’s chocolate with crispy milk dessert—is part of the Club des Chefs app. And, as Chef Roux pointed out, it’s an ever-expanding selection.

Just as its name implies, Samsung’s Family Hub refrigerator was designed to serve as a communal center for the home. Its large touchscreen display and intuitive suite of apps were crafted to streamline not only food management, but also family communication and kitchen entertainment.

In conjunction with Family Hub’s introduction to the European market, Samsung’s Vice President of Refrigerator Product Marketing, Ik-su Choi, explains how the company’s latest refrigerators have been optimized for European families’ use.

Q. This year, Samsung created a Family Hub refrigerator with a design that reflects a more European style. What have Europeans’ pre-launch reactions to Family Hub been like?

There has been great interest in seeing the launch of a BMF (bottom-mount freezer) model for the European market. We’ve received a lot of questions regarding their introduction there since they were first released in the US and Korea, but because we needed time to cultivate suitable partner companies and properly localize the product for each country, we decided to launch Family Hub at IFA.

In terms of content, Family Hub’s food management and smart home functions were very popular. There were also a lot of questions regarding the mobile sync function.

Q. Family Hub is clearly designed for family use. Nevertheless, there are some cultural differences in terms of family life between Korea and Europe. Do you think European consumers may utilize Family Hub differently in their daily lives?

Family Hub is equipped with content that is communicable worldwide, as one thing that is universal and unchanging is the value of family.

As a center of family interaction, Family Hub can be a platform that allows families to communicate better and more conveniently, through digital handwritten notes as well as apps like Sticki. If Family Hub plays this small role in helping people have conversations, I believe that is a meaningful start.

Q. You are an expert in the field of home appliances and are well-versed in the history of refrigerators. What do you think their future will be?

Previously, capacity and storage efficiency were the main competitive factors with regard to refrigerators. Our company has historically excelled in these aspects, regularly achieving a number-one market ranking through extreme innovation.

Under the new paradigm—centered on IoT—consumers’ needs for new categories of products like the Family Hub refrigerator will grow. Refrigerators will no longer remain merely storage devices for food, but will become devices that families use together. They will become a central kitchen appliance, allowing people to communicate, and not only store food, but even purchase and manage it.

Consumers’ need for not just simple refrigerators but smart refrigerators will continue to increase, and we will respond to this trend by further evolving Family Hub in ways that are customized to various markets—utilizing their environments—and continuing to expand our lineup.

Q. Design has traditionally been the key factor driving consumers’ BMF refrigerator purchases. How did the European Family Hub’s design come about, and how are the refrigerators built to remain durable, reliable and innovative for years to come?

The BMF-style refrigerator—refrigerator above, freezer below—is the most common design in Europe. That is why we released this style of refrigerator, fit for the European market and enhanced with Family Hub’s premium functions and usability. To build it, we loaded a large interactive LCD screen onto a previous BMF framework, resulting in a Chef Collection design of peerless technology that fits beautifully in the kitchen.

In terms of reliability, Family Hub’s hardware and software have been designed to be continuously upgraded, and in the case of the LCD screen, a product that guarantees 10 years of durability was used. By attaching it using a modular method, in which replacement and repairs are easy, we allow continuous technological upgrades, as well as changes to reflect trends.

Q. What are some of the apps and inner features that will help consumers bring their cooking skills up to par with, say, the Michelin-starred chefs of Samsung’s Club des Chefs?

We are planning to load Family Hub with apps like Allrecipes, Whisk, ChefKoch—a local recipe app—and the Club des Chefs app, which all offer delicious recipes. We are also planning to provide insight into different ways to cook using Family Hub.

Q. Which Family Hub app do you believe is a game changer?

Family Hub’s applications constantly evolve. It is composed of apps that consumers need based on the four pillars that fit consumer trends, and it will constantly be updated to reflect those needs. Thus, Family Hub itself will surely play the game-changer role that changes the market’s dynamics.

Q. Family Hub is further proof that Samsung is setting a standard in IoT. Why do you believe Samsung has managed to achieve such success in this relatively new field, and how is that experience reflected in the Family Hub refrigerator?

In this IoT era, consumers have grown used to conveniently connecting with devices, based on their smartphone experience, and they want to connect with even more devices in ways that further benefit them in daily life.

Samsung applied technical expertise gained from smartphone and Smart TV experience, along with advanced abundant-usage scenarios based on our accumulated knowhow of household appliances, to create Family Hub and deliver seamless usability to consumers. Drawing from such expertise, we will be able to deliver differentiated user experiences that could not be provided in the past, and bring about big change in consumers’ lifestyles through Family Hub.

Q. The Family Hub refrigerator offers incredible insight into the freshness of our food. What are some of the ways it allows us to store goods efficiently while saving energy?

Family Hub features a large LCD screen that is efficiently managed with an adjoining sensor. By using the inner-view camera, which allows users to see the inside of the refrigerator without opening the door, users can prevent unnecessary energy consumption. This is one of the reasons why Family Hub has a high-energy consumption efficiency rating of A++.

Family Hub also helps minimize food waste by keeping track of the location of fresh foods and their expiration dates and allowing users to prevent unnecessary purchases by giving them the ability to look inside their refrigerator via mobile device anytime, anywhere.

Featuring a large touchscreen display and a comprehensive suite of intuitive apps, Samsung’s Family Hub refrigerator brings the timeless art of cooking well and truly into the twenty-first century.

Samsung opened its IFA 2016 press conference in Berlin with a simple yet bold pledge: to redefine the consumer experience. Over the next 45 minutes, in presentations that delved into the company’s European roots, and with the announcements of new products and partnerships expanding its home entertainment, visual display and home appliance offerings, Samsung demonstrated just how much it has already delivered on its vow.

Those attending the showcase at the heart of Messe Berlins’ CityCube arena were welcomed by David Lowes, Chief Marketing Officer of Samsung Electronics Europe, who began by noting the company’s ongoing investment in the continent that 14,000 of its employees call home, as well as its drive to deliver innovations tailored to European consumers. After the introduction, Michael Zoeller, VP and European Head of Visual Display at Samsung Electronics Europe, kicked off a morning of exciting reveals with new additions to Samsung’s Quantum dot display range, briefly tracing Samsung’s pioneering research with the technology, which allows its SUHD TVs to offer the most true-to-life viewing experience available today and enable Samsung TVs todisplay up to one billion colors. He also revealed the world’s largest Quantum dot TV—the 88-inch KS9800—and the first curved Quantum dot PC monitors.

Later, Won-Jin Lee, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics, took to the stage to announce further steps to enrich the viewing experience in the intuitive Samsung Smart Remote and enhancements to Smart Hub, allowing users to more seamlessly find and launch premium content on their Smart TVs. As Mr. Lee told the crowd, “Great television is not just about outstanding picture quality; it’s also about amazing content,” which is why Samsung is strengthening its relationships with partners such as Netflix and Amazon to deliver high-quality HDR (high dynamic range) content for European users to view on the outstanding SUHD TVs.

Other highlights of the event included the unveiling of new additions to Samsung’s AddWash line of washing machines, as well as the announcement that Samsung’s Family Hub refrigerators are finally coming to Europe and will feature a Club des Chefs app—a reveal made by three of the Club’s Michelin-starred members themselves: Michel Roux, Michel Troisgros and Elena Arzak.

Samsung wrapped up the showcase by highlighting another vow: its commitment to use technology to enrich European communities. Evelyn Nicola, Sustainability & Citizenship Manager of Samsung Electronics Europe, discussed the company’s Smart Classroom and Digital Academy programs, which teach European students valuable digital skills that will boost their employability. Samsung’s goal with the programs, Ms. Nicola said, was to reach 400,000 students by 2019—a figure, she was pleased to announce, that will be eclipsed later this year.

During the press conference, held once again in the CityCube at Messe Berlin, Samsung reiterated its commitment to Europe, employing 14,000 people in 34 countries. Samsung’s products are infused with European flair, fashion, design and the finest traditions of manufacturing excellence. With Q2 revenue up five percent year on year, seven out of 10 European households owning a Samsung mobile phone, and one in three families watching their favorite shows and films on Samsung TVs, the company believes now is the right time to invest even further in Europe’s potential.

In keeping with this commitment, Samsung announced a new partnership with MakerBot, the global leader in 3D printing, which will equip schools, colleges and museums in five European markets with 3D printers, as well as train teachers and students alike in the use of the technology. With more than 100,000 MakerBot printers around the world, it represents the world’s largest 3D printing community and an incredibly powerful tool inside the classroom. Samsung also announced that, as part of the European Commission’s Grand Coalition for Digital Jobs, it is on track to deliver its pledge to support 400,000 young people by the end of 2016 – three years earlier than expected.

The Future of Television: Redefined by Quantum Dot

Samsung also reinforced its commitment to Quantum dot display technology at IFA 2016.

Samsung revealed our new Quantum dot TV, the 88-inch KS9800, offering the ultimate in picture quality, brilliance and, as with all of Samsung’s SUHD TVs, a display capable of producing up to one billion colors. Samsung now offers the largest range of SUHD TVs in Europe, with 19 available sizes from 43” up to 88”, capitalizing on the limitless flexibility of Quantum dot in terms of screen size and definition. Samsung also announced the world’s first curved Quantum dot PC Monitors – the new CF791, with a 34” Ultra Wide QHD screen and the stunning new CFG70, the first curved monitor with a one millisecond moving picture response time and 144 hertz refresh rate for smooth, flawless gaming.

Samsung is also the only company able to offer consumers cadmium-free Quantum Dot TVs – a point made by guest speaker, Jason Hartlove, President & CEO of Nanosys and one of the world’s top authorities on Quantum dot technology. Hartlove revealed Quantum dot is among the most stable and reliable display materials available anywhere on the planet, enabling superior performance and more environmentally-friendly displays with an extraordinary lifespan. Such is the company’s confidence in the reliability of Qantum dot, Samsung announced a new 10-year warranty for its SUHD TVs with Quantum dot display, protecting consumers against the effects of burn-in for an entire decade.

At the press conference, Won Jin Lee, the Executive Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, introduced Samsung’s content platform, Smart Hub, and announced the formation of a new premium HDR content partnership that will help realize the full potential of Quantum Dot SUHD TV. This included plans to expand Samsung’s TV Plus service – which has proven so popular in South Korea – to both the United States and Europe.

Ever mindful that great television is about amazing content as well as outstanding picture quality, Samsung said it was strengthening its collaborative relationships with global partners, such as Amazon and Netflix. Netflix in particular is expanding its range of HDR content for European customers, with film titles such as Marco Polo, The Do-Over and The Ridiculous Six. European partners including RTVE and Insight TV will also begin to offer HDR content in the second half of 2016.

Samsung also showcased the capabilities of the Samsung Smart Remote, which allows users to easily navigate all of their connected devices with one single remote control. The Smart remote is designed to auto-detect any and all external devices connected to the TV, making it simple for consumers to switch between and use them – without having to hunt around for multiple remotes.

Lastly, Samsung underlined its position as the leader in European home audio and the number one soundbar manufacturer in the region. On display were products including Samsung’s Wireless Audio 360 line-up and HW-K950 Soundbar featuring Dolby Atmos^® audio technology for cinematic, multi-dimensional sound. Combined with its SUHD TV, UHD Blu-ray Player, and HDR content ecosystem, such a range makes Samsung the only company capable of providing the complete 4K home entertainment experience.

Redefining the Fastest Growing Brand in Home Appliances

Samsung’s drive to redefine the consumer experience goes well beyond the living room. Over the last three years, Samsung’s  home appliance business has grown approximately five times faster than the rest of the industry in Europe. The success of new products such as AddWash, first revealed at IFA 2015, have made Samsung the number one premium washing machine brand in France, Poland, Italy and the UK. At IFA 2016, Samsung announced two new AddWash products – the AddWash Combo, which eliminates the need to purchase a separate dryer, and the AddWash Slim, which can fit into a smaller kitchen space without compromising on load size.

Following extensive research into what European consumers really want from their kitchen, Samsung introduced three new built-in line-ups, the Contemporary Line with a new built-in refrigerator, the Black Line which uses a semi-matte black that gives modern, timeless look, and the original Chef Collection. The new true built-in refrigerator unit from the Contemporary Line delivers a seamless fit and flawless, advanced performance thanks to innovative technologies such as No Frost, Twin Cooling Plus^TM, Cool Select Zone Plus.

Samsung also announced that its sensational Family Hub is coming to Europe. This top-of-the-line refrigerator also features Twin Cooling Plus ^TM technologyto maximize food freshness, as well as Precise Chef Cooling ^TM, which keeps temperature fluctuations within plus or minus 0.5 degrees. Family Hub also features a special ‘Chef Zone ^TM’, which is ideal for managing temperature-sensitive proteins. And, of course, its three innerview cameras take photos that consumers can access via their mobile devices, enabling them to see what’s inside wherever they may be.

Family Hub also features a 21.5-inch Full HD touchscreen offering consumers a wide range of functionality. It can serve as the family’s interactive white board for notes, photos, shared calendars and artwork. Content can be uploaded directly via the touchscreen or remotely by mobile phone or tablet. Consumers can also use the touch screen and online shopping app to order groceries straight from their kitchen for delivery right to their door. Samsung is partnering with a range of European online grocery shopping portals including premium Italian food provider, Eataly, to other European food delivery services such as Supermercato24 and Switzerland’s coop@home.

Family Hub will also give European customers a chance to cook with the masters via the Club des Chefs App. Straight from the Family Hub screen, Club des Chefs offers professional cooking tips through text and video advice. Being able to watch world-class culinary experts at work on the upper half of the screen while being talked through a recipe on the lower half is an excellent example of how Samsung is redefining the kitchen experience.

Samsung Electronics’ booth will be open at Level 2 of City Cube Berlin from September 2 through 7 for IFA 2016.
