Mikael Krekula, a professional wilderness guide based in Kiruna, Sweden, was out on the frozen Kalix River testing sonar equipment when his Galaxy S23 Ultra slipped from his glove and fell into an ice fishing hole. The device plunged into the freezing water, settling roughly three meters below the surface.

“At that moment, I felt like I had donated my entire digital life to the river — photos, ID, credit cards and all my apps gone in an instant,” Mikael said. “It wasn’t just a phone to me. It was my work companion, essential in everything I do.”

Despite the extreme conditions, Mikael decided to attempt a recovery. Over the course of five hours, he drilled eight surrounding ice holes to get a better angle to the phone and used a series of improvised tools — birch branches, a shovel and a plastic bag on a stick — to try and reach the device.

“I could see my phone through the ice. It wasn’t lost completely — just barely out of reach,” he explained. “Eventually, I drove home, grabbed a summer fishing net, tied the net to a birch rod and came back — and within five minutes, it was in my hands.”

Remarkably, the Galaxy S23 Ultra powered on immediately, displaying three missed calls. There was no need for a reboot or drying procedures.

“We let it sit overnight in the cabin just to be safe, but the next day it was still working perfectly,” Mikael added. “And it continues to function just like it did before the incident.”

Technology That Keeps Up With the Wild

As a wilderness guide leading tours across the Arctic Circle, Mikael relies heavily on mobile technology. His Galaxy S23 Ultra supports navigation, weather updates, language translation, photography, and communication — often in sub-zero temperatures and remote locations.

“When you’re guiding guests under the northern lights or across frozen terrain, your tech can’t fail,” he said. “The Galaxy S23 Ultra also delivers outstanding night photography, which is essential for capturing this region’s unique light conditions.”

Mikael now includes a hand net in his winter packing list — and grips his phone more tightly. “This was definitely a learning experience,” he remarked. “But it also showed me that the phone can handle a lot more than I expected.”

A Refined Design With an Unmistakable Edge

The Galaxy S25 Edge makes a bold statement with its ultra-slim profile.

“This model represents the most essential form of a smartphone by removing all unnecessary elements,” said Lee, who led the product design.

The device’s thinness is further highlighted by the thoughtful balance of color, material and finish (CMF). Premium titanium, known for both its elegance and durability, is used for the side frame — creating a slim yet sturdy feel while reflecting the design identity of the Galaxy S25 Ultra.

The color palette was carefully refined to emphasize the Galaxy S25 Edge’s distinct form and stay true to the Galaxy S25 series’ luminous shade concept, inspired by the broad spectrum of light. Available shades include Titanium Silver, Titanium Icyblue and Titanium Jetblack.

A one-mass design — visually integrating the frame and back cover — works in tandem with a slimmer bezel to create a seamless, cohesive look that accentuates the Galaxy S25’s sleek profile.

“In designing the Galaxy S25 Edge, we considered color depth and saturation, material integration, user preferences and manufacturing processes,” said Park, who led the CMF design. “This allowed us to express the symbolism and refined identity of the Galaxy S25 Edge while maintaining consistency with the Galaxy S25 series’ overall CMF direction.”

The Intersection of Sleekness and Usability

What does “Essential Design” mean in the context of smartphones? For the Galaxy design team, it is not just about simplicity — it’s about intent-driven design centered on the user.

“During planning, we asked ourselves what new value a slimmer smartphone could offer — instead of focusing solely on how to make the device thinner,” said Lee. “We wanted the design to go beyond first impressions and deliver lasting satisfaction through balance and comfort the moment it is held.”

Guided by an aesthetic philosophy focused on modern and sleek design, slimness became a key element to enhance usability.

“The Galaxy S25 Edge offers a natural one-hand grip that reduces wrist strain during extended use, and the thin bezel allows for a more immersive viewing experience,” she added. “The front is flat while the back has a subtle curve — shaped to feel comfortable in the hand.”

Premium Value Through a Balance of Emotion and Technology

Fitting both high performance and premium craftsmanship into a 5.8 mm frame was a challenge in itself.

“We couldn’t compromise on either the exceptionally sleek design or the powerful 200 MP camera,” said Lee. “To ensure the high-performance camera blended seamlessly into the thinner body, we applied the same CMF from the back glass to the camera bump — making it look like a unified structure. We used the linear camera layout, an integral element of the Galaxy identity, to tie it all together.”

Precision in CMF execution was equally important.

“To apply the same CMF concept from the Galaxy S25 series to a slimmer glass body, we collaborated closely across departments — testing various color combinations and layered finishes right up until launch,” said Park.

The result is a remarkably thin form factor that still delivers the premium look and feel that defines Galaxy.

Samsung Newsroom spoke with some of the Galaxy S23 series’ designers to learn more about how the new flagship range’s distinct design came about.

Premium Design With an Eco-Conscious Focus

Q. Please introduce the Galaxy S23 series’ design theme, “Create the Essentials”.

Our focus was on creating a design that boils down the essence of the smartphone. Resources can be wasted during the production process if too many unnecessary details are incorporated, so we made the decision to retain only the bare essential design features, based on the true identity of the device, for the basis of the Galaxy S23 series’ design.

Q. How is this theme in alignment with the general direction of the Samsung Galaxy design approach?

The Samsung Galaxy S series is a product lineup built on the true essence of what premium design can be. For the Galaxy S23 series, we deliberated extensively on what elements would not only make for a great design, but also how they would impact the world at large. Since we are living in a time where resource circulation and eco-conscious activities are at the forefront of daily life, we feel, too, that designers should reflect these values in their designs as the world over shifts its priorities towards eco-consciousness. Our design approach actively incorporates these ideas by making bold design decisions and incorporating future-forward ideas.

Q. What are the Galaxy design team’s goals towards creating designs that honor both people as well as the planet?

Our approach can be summarized in the form of five goals. Firstly, we aim to “create essence” through our designs for ultimate user satisfaction. Secondly, we want to “create circularity” to increase resource circulation efforts across the entire product lifecycle from manufacturing through to use and disposal. Thirdly, we aspire to “create standardization” in order to streamline our designs and subsequently reduce resource waste and manufacturing costs, and fourthly, to “create longevity” for our products by extending their life cycles and building easily fixable designs. Finally, we aim to “create transparency” through clear communication on the metrics of our design processes with a focus on eco-conscious activities. All Samsung Galaxy designers are guided by these five goals.

Q. Can you share more about how the design team is following through on these goals?

All projects we undertake keep the long-term vision in mind instead of short-term results, and we collaborate closely with the material sourcing teams to ensure our designs incorporate recycled materials. We also share our design strategy and plans with a range of internal stakeholders in order to further vitalize each project with different ideas and perspectives. We make sure to reflect on all the feedback we receive in order to keep eco-consciousness at front of mind when designing.

Q. How important is working with such an authentic mission in mind to the team?

We live in a world where the sharing of information is boundless, making temporary or short-term initiatives meaningless. We embrace the opportunity to think carefully about the values and efforts necessary required to accomplish our vision, as well as how best to communicate our approach transparently. This sense of mission as designers motivates us, and in time, we believe our customers, too, will come to understand and appreciate our determination.

The Samsung Galaxy Identity

Q. Can you share more about the two different designs, based on target audience, you developed for the Galaxy S23 series?

The Galaxy S23 and S23+ feature thin bezels that are slim and balanced on all sides for users to better focus on their screens, while a curved metal frame both protects the screen and provides the user with a comfortable grip. For the Galaxy S23 Ultra, we reduced the side edges and extended the flat surface of the device even further not only to provide better grip, but also to provide more space in which the S Pen can be utilized and ultimately maximize the benefits of the large screen for the user.

Our focus when designing was to convey a consistent design identity across all three devices through simple line design and planes that eliminate all unnecessary elements. Even the more subtle elements, such as the side keys, antenna slit, speaker hole and mic hole, had their size and layout meticulously adjusted to match this. Furthermore, the camera contour cut design seen on the Galaxy S22 and S22+ was removed, and all Galaxy S23 models are now fitted with a single camera design to provide even more consistency across the lineup.

Q. Would you agree that the Galaxy S23 series’ camera’s distinct design is as notable as its performance?

Since a lot of the smartphones currently on the market possess a similar shape, the camera design of a device has become a powerful way to distinguish a product and express brand identity. This is why the Samsung Galaxy S series’ camera layout has stayed the same since the Galaxy S21 series in order to foster a unique design identity.

The external part of the camera is a glossy metal while the internal parts have been processed with smooth hairlines in order to convey the camera’s powerful performance. The design of the inner elements of the camera, including the form, texture and color, were inspired by traditional camera lenses that minimize light reflection.

Future-Forward Color Swatches, Inspired by Nature

Q. Can you please introduce the main colors of the Galaxy S23 series?

Some of the Galaxy S23 series’ components were built using recycled materials¹ to contribute to resource circulation, so in order to further reflect this idea of environmental protection, the Galaxy S23 series comes in four colors that are based on a concept we call “Shades of Nature”. The Green shade is reminiscent of a tranquil forest while Phantom Black embodies the silent strength of nature, and the bright Cream shade is warming to look at while Lavender captures the energetic nature of everyday life.

Four additional colors that we developed under the concept of “Shades in Dream” — Lime, Skyblue, Red and Graphite² — will be exclusively available for devices purchased online. We wanted to provide online customers with some upbeat and futuristic shades that convey their brightness even when simply seen on-screen. The Lime shade, a brand-new addition to the Samsung Galaxy color lineup, has been designed to be a lively and captivating color swatch, and we hope our users will enjoy this new addition to the Samsung Galaxy color range.

Q. Can you speak more about the recycled materials used in part of the Galaxy S23 series’ back panel glass³?

Recycled materials based on plastic bottles can tend to have a yellowish tint to them, so we were initially worried that the coloring might end up too dark. However, after we processed the materials, we were surprised to find that this recycled material actually helped to create a more natural and organic look for the Cream shade.

Designed With the Planet in Mind

Q. Can you share more about the expansion of recycled materials involved in the Galaxy S23 series’ development?

The front and back glass panels of the Galaxy S23 series devices contain an average of 22% of pre-consumer recycled content, and the film that goes inside the back glass panel incorporates 80% of recycled plastics sourced from discarded plastic bottles. Furthermore, the inner components of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, including the S Pen cover and the lower speaker modules, have been built using recycled ocean-bound plastic sourced from discarded fishnets and plastic bottles, and aluminum byproducts from the manufacturing process were used for the S23 Ultra’s side and volume keys.

Furthermore, the packaging box is made from 100% recycled paper and the cover accessory also contains some recycled or biodegradable materials, meaning that all aspects of the Galaxy S23 series’ design reflect our commitment to the circulation of resources.

Q. What efforts have been made to create more eco-conscious packaging designs over the years?

We started to reduce the use of plastic in our packaging designs in 2018. When we first started, we had fourteen different packaging parts within a single package, and now for Galaxy S23 series, we have come a long way to ensure that only six packaging parts⁴ are included. We also made sure to leverage recycled paper materials when building the packaging box itself, and though paper materials made from 100% recycled pulp can be dusty and weaker than regular paper, we undertook extensive research, adjusted the manufacturing process and went through countless quality verification tests to find the perfect composition to use in our product packaging.

Q. What areas will you be focusing on for future package designs?

We will continue to focus on creating high-quality packaging that incorporates recycled paper materials. Our goal is to create our own paper materials made with pulp that we have developed ourselves, as well as to receive recognition for our eco-conscious designs.

Samsung is committed to pursuing innovation that does not take the planet’s resources for granted and that instead repurposes discarded materials in order to give them a second life, thus providing users with true, meaningful value. Professional-Quality Camera and More Engaging Gallery

One UI 5.1 expands upon the recently upgraded camera features announced with the Galaxy S23 series. Galaxy users now have greater flexibility to create professional quality photos with Expert RAW⁴ features now available directly as part of the Galaxy Camera app. Simply select “More” while taking a photo to capture high-quality shots in their raw format. Additionally, enhanced AI-based Photo Remaster automatically improves deteriorated details of images by improving brightness, fine-tuning details and making color corrections even in backlit scenes. It also removes unwanted shadows and reflections for a picture-perfect photo.⁵

New navigation improvements also make it easier than ever to find photos within the Gallery app and create shared family albums.⁶ Simply tap a person’s face in a photo to conduct a search for more images while the Gallery app searches for faces of loved ones to recommend for family photo albums.

A Unique Mobile Experience Personalized for Every User

Samsung has long been focused on giving Galaxy users greater control over their devices by customizing various user interface aspects. One UI 5.1 delivers several exciting new features that allow people to fine-tune nearly every aspect of the mobile experience — from appearance, to communications, actions and more. Samsung introduced new features that can understand how devices are used and make recommendations accordingly. For example, the new dynamic weather widget analyzes current conditions and creates a custom design that reflects the climate. Modes and Routines have expanded to enable custom wallpapers, ringtones, touch sensitivity and fonts that can personalize specific activities for even more convenience. One UI 5.1 also improves the Smart suggestions widget⁷ by adding the ability to recommend Spotify⁸ tracks and playlists based on users’ activities, such as music for road trips or relaxing.

Greater Connectivity Throughout Galaxy Ecosystem

Samsung has also developed One UI to bring greater integration and connectivity throughout the mobile ecosystem and introduced features supporting this mission. Users can enjoy a connected ecosystem across their mobile and PC with expanded Multi Control between Galaxy Book and smartphones.⁹ This enables users to share the mouse, keyboard or trackpad of their Galaxy Book not only with their Galaxy tablet but now also with select Galaxy phones, allowing them to copy and paste text and drag and drop images from one device to another seamlessly — as if they’re the same, single device. Furthermore, Link to Windows enables users to browse with Samsung Internet on their phones to continue browsing the same pages on their PC¹⁰ seamlessly. These pages can also be opened from one device to another, making everyday life much easier.

One UI 5.1 software update starts to roll out for the Samsung Galaxy S22 series,¹ Z Fold4, Z Flip4, S21 series² and S20 series.³ Software updates for additional Galaxy devices, including the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 will be available in the coming weeks.

Galaxy Experience Space visitors, including media and influencers, got an exciting first look at the latest Galaxy innovations through immersive and interactive exhibits. Whether it was getting behind the lens of Galaxy’s latest camera system, testing the potential of Galaxy’s connected experience or learning about Samsung’s efforts towards a sustainable future, each visitor had an epic experience they’ll never forget.

Share the Epic: Welcome to a World of Galaxy

On the first floor of the experience hall, visitors were greeted by a display of digital signage in the middle, surrounded by a modern and clean exhibition filled to the brim with Galaxy innovation. Like a contemporary art exhibit, the space was decorated with an array of past generations of Galaxy smartphones. The exhibition space was themed around eco-conscious innovation, highlighting Samsung’s sustainable efforts toward building the foundation for a better tomorrow.

The exhibition showcased each of the recycled materials used for various parts of the Galaxy S23 series and how they were integrated into the final product, so visitors could understand how Samsung is shaping a more sustainable future through eco-conscious innovations.

“I think it’s extremely important for a company like Samsung, with the size of Samsung, to take care and be worried about sustainability,” said Bruno Martinez, chief editor at Showmetech in Brazil. “So, it’s really good to see the company doing that and taking firm steps all over the place. You can see this here with the Galaxy S23 line and the packaging.”

The Share the Epic experience zone had a space where visitors could view the four color options for the Galaxy S23 series and . Across Green, Lavender, Cream and Phantom Black, all visitors could find a shade that resonated with their unique style. The section also held a service center where visitors could get their questions answered and a space where they could enter giveaway contests.

Capture the Epic: Stunning Shots, Day or Night With Galaxy S23 Series

Visitors were over the moon with excitement for Galaxy’s S23 camera demonstration on the second floor of the Galaxy Experience Space. Snapping a larger-than-life astronaut and a dynamic interstellar background, the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s 200MP camera captured every photo with mind-blowing detail and ultra-high resolution.

With Samsung portrait studio, visitors could treat themselves and their friends to an impromptu photoshoot. The stunning shots were displayed on the walls of the Samsung Portrait Gallery, so every snapshot became a literal work of art.

Visitors also had to option to don their favorite goofy accessory and hit up the Galaxy Photo Booth, which used the Galaxy S23 Ultra to capture and customize the moment with friends.

The Galaxy Experience Space also brought Seoul’s vibrant, neon nightlife to San Francisco. Visitors captured striking photos and video at night like never before with the Galaxy S23 series’ improved Nightography. This was a favorite feature of numerous Galaxy Experience Space visitors, including Bruno Rosa, a journalist at O Globo in Rio, Brazil.

“Nightography is a very interesting and useful feature, especially for better pictures in dark areas,” said Bruno. “Not only if you take a classical picture, but if you take a selfie, you know, it’s very interesting for the customers.”

Nightography is only one of many enhanced camera capabilities on the Galaxy S23 series, which also includes clear and stable video shooting and enhanced selfies.

“I look forward to the camera experience on the new Galaxy S23 Ultra because the 200MP camera capacity on the phone cameras was cool and interesting,” Bruno added.

“The camera is one of the most important features on smartphones today, so I consider that to be a critical part of video editing. I can crop and adjust videos on my Galaxy S23 Ultra, which is hard to do on any other smartphone.”

Play the Epic: Next-Level Gaming With Galaxy S23 Ultra

Under the bright neon lights, the gaming zone between the first and second floors felt like the visitors were competing in an intense esports tournament. While at the Galaxy Experience Space, visitors participated in racing games and experienced the improved gaming performance of the Galaxy S23 series firsthand. With a powerful chipset, intelligent display and improved battery, the Galaxy S23 series brought gaming experiences to the next level.

“I saw an influencer play the racing game on his smartphone, and the screen seemed really fast and smooth,” said Alzbeta Gavendova, a video tech journalist from Slovakia at Mafra Slovakia. “I saw the gamer after he tested the products, and he said that the experience was fun, enjoyable and pleasant.”

Create the Epic: Expanding the Galaxy Ecosystem Through Connectivity

At Galaxy Unpacked 2023, Samsung brought the power of Ultra to its lineup of Galaxy Books with the release of the new Galaxy Book3 Series. The Galaxy Book3 Ultra is the most powerful Galaxy Book ever, supercharged with seamless connected experiences within the Galaxy ecosystem, including the new Galaxy S23 series. Visitors could also try out upgraded connectivity features, such as Samsung Multi Control and Quick Share.

SmartThings: Your Technology, Your Way

Taking a tour of the SmartThings Zone revealed to visitors how their daily routine could be streamlined through SmartThings connectivity across their home appliances, including TVs, monitors, air purifiers and robot vacuum cleaners. The space, which resembled a modern living room, connected users to an ecosystem of smarter living solutions that allowed users to spend less time on chores and more time on the moments that matter most.

The recently unveiled Galaxy S23 series made a serious impact on visitors with its beautiful design and vertically aligned rear camera lenses. Not only has Samsung improved the unified camera design, but also significantly updated Galaxy S23 Ultra’s camera capabilities. These improvements were highlighted through videos filmed #withGalaxy, which debuted at this year’s Unpacked event.

The event featured an electrifying short film captured by an award-winning film director Ridley Scott entirely with the Galaxy S23 Ultra — Samsung’s most incredible camera yet. The short film showed off the device’s superior camera capabilities, revealing that anyone can produce an epic film with videos filmed from their everyday lives.

Galaxy S23 Ultra’s new 200MP Wide Camera captures high-resolution photos with a level of large-scale color and detail never before seen in a smartphone. What’s more, various pro-level features in the Expert RAW empower users to produce creative and cinematic films with ease.

Shooting in low light can be challenging for even the most advanced filmmakers, resulting in shaky, unusable footage with lots of noise. At Galaxy Unpacked, Samsung announced a multi-frame processing solution for the Galaxy S23 series camera to overcome this challenge. This dedicated algorithm combines multiple images across frames to reduce noise, letting anyone take vivid and optimized videos, even in the dark. Also, an enhanced AI object-aware engine and stereo depth map allow the camera to capture clear portraits in great detail, making night photos come to life. What’s more, with the enhanced Nightography and front camera, Galaxy S23 series users will be constantly asked to share their group photos and videos with friends.

Level Up Your Gaming Experience With Galaxy S23 Series

The Galaxy S23 series has gotten a serious upgrade all across the board, from its enhanced 5000 mAh battery and its improved cooling system to its next-level camera performance and 41% faster GPU. The newly designed, 8-core CPU boosts the processing capabilities of the Galaxy S23 series by about 34%, which is ideal for multitasking. The optimized NPU architecture also uses an AI algorithm for an additional 49% boost, helping users capture stunning photos in low light.

During the partnership announcement section of Galaxy Unpacked 2023, President and CEO of Qualcomm Cristiano Amon first took to the stage, revealing that the Galaxy S23 series is powered by the world’s fastest and most power-efficient Snapdragon^® yet.

Finally, Cristiano explained that the company aimed to create a new era of highly immersive XR experiences that blur the lines between the physical and digital worlds.

Hiroshi Lockheimer, Google’s SVP in charge of Platforms and Ecosystem, highlighted the importance of partnership, citing the rollout of the Rich Communication Services (RCS) Messaging Standard and Wear OS, both of which were close collaborations with Samsung. Moving forward, Hiroshi explained how Google would also be investing in groundbreaking XR technologies that will change the way we interact.

“An exciting space where Google has been investing in for a long time across both experiences and technology is AR and VR,” said Hiroshi. “These technologies are integral to the new phase of computing as it can change the way we interact with people and information to get things done in the real world.”

Best known for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Synecdoche, New York, Kaufman took advantage of the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s filming capabilities to create a short visual art film in beautiful, crystal-clear detail. The film, titled Jackals and Fireflies, is based on a poem by Eva H.D., who plays the role of poet, narrator and lead actor in this uniquely Kaufmanesque love letter to New York City. Galaxy S22 Ultra’s Nightography allowed acclaimed Director of Photography Chayse Irvin to effectively capture New York’s famous night scenes, revealing the City to viewers as if they were witnessing with their own eyes. Kaufman found shooting with Galaxy to be an “effective approach” for bringing the film to life, and is very happy with the final result, adding that “the finished product is beautiful.”

The partnership builds on the Filmed #withGalaxy campaign, which invites visionary directors to demonstrate that the Galaxy S Series is the perfect tool they need to share their epic stories with the world. Like so many great inventions, Expert RAW was a group effort — driven by Samsung’s experts and Galaxy users’ valuable feedback. To learn more about the Expert RAW experience, Samsung Newsroom spoke with the experts at Samsung Research² who collaborated on the app.

Read on to see what Hamid Sheikh, Head of the Intelligent Imaging Team at Samsung Research America’s (SRA) Mobile Processor Innovation (MPI) Lab, and Girish Kulkarni, Head of the Camera Solutions Group at the Samsung R&D Institute India-Bangalore (SRI-B), had to say about this innovative camera collaboration.

Q: What does the Expert RAW app do? What are the main benefits for users?

Hamid: Expert RAW really gives users the ability to take full control of their mobile photography experience much like a professional photographer would. The app captures much more comprehensive data for each image, which can be used to both improve photos and artistically enhance them with editing software like Adobe Lightroom — the go-to app for professional photographers.

To improve the overall camera experience, we worked closely with Adobe to tightly couple Expert RAW with Lightroom. The result is that photographers have full control over their creative experience. Novice photographers can also utilize automatic set points for camera controls, and then use the Samsung-specific default values in Lightroom. In both cases, the tight integration of the two apps makes for an enjoyable experience.

Girish: Expert RAW is an epic leap forward for photography. It essentially places a professional studio in your pocket. Whether you are a pro photographer or you’re just a user who wants to capture amazing content, anyone can take full advantage of the Galaxy S22’s pro-grade camera with Expert RAW. It captures high-quality, high dynamic range pictures in the multi-frame RAW format that enables precise post-capture editing and professional results.

With Expert RAW, people can capture much more information in a single picture — from dark details to bright highlights. It also drastically reduces noise and increases sharpness and detail. If you’re looking for the ultimate creative controls, you can choose your own settings for aspects like ISO, shutter speed, white balance, EV and focus, and even choose which lenses you want to use for the subject and the scene. Finally, because both JPEG and DNG files are saved when shooting, you can hop right into the Adobe Lightroom app on your smartphone or PC and edit with ease.

Q: What was the original inspiration for Expert RAW?

Hamid: Samsung camera technologies have always relied on sophisticated computational photography algorithms to produce the best picture quality. However, the standard camera app makes many decisions about how the image will be rendered in terms of color, tone, detail and noise. The user has very limited say in these decisions.

Our inspiration came from the confluence of user experience limitations and the leaps in computational and AI capabilities of today’s mobile processors. We asked ourselves, “How can we make the photography experience more inspiring for users?” So really, our inspiration came from the expert and enthusiast photography community, which yearned for an easier mobile photography experience, without sacrificing the creative control that DSLR and post-capture editing allows. Expert RAW was born out of a desire to transform that inspiration into reality.

Girish: As we heard the input of professional photographers who were mostly utilizing DSLR cameras, they wanted to achieve a pro-grade experience with smartphones. Our consumer research also showed that after using their smartphone’s auto camera for a long time, typical users were very passionate about exploring Samsung’s pro-grade camera capabilities in-depth to become better photographers.

The more we talked to professional and amateur photographers, the more we understood their needs in terms of RAW image capturing, camera controls, the post-editing experience, creative capabilities and more. That’s when we set out to create a new pro-grade experience based around RAW capturing so that every level of photographer could merge our camera controls and their creativity to enjoy professional-looking photos.

Q: What makes Expert RAW such an important release for mobile photography in general?

Hamid: The camera experience is one of the most important experiences that a user has with his or her smartphone. Samsung has been at the cutting edge of camera quality, and the gap between consumers and professional/enthusiast photographers has always been a tempting one to bridge.

I think with the release of Expert RAW, users will find that their photography experience will take a quantum leap in terms of creative control and artistic expression. I expect more and more people will find this new experience rewarding because it lets them personalize their camera based on their tastes — exactly how they want them — and not based on what some other engineers chose for them.

Girish: As an app, this platform has simplified the RAW capturing process with precise camera and lens controls and post-editing with Adobe Lightroom. It’s for every user who is willing to go beyond — to unleash the true power of an Expert RAW camera, and explore their creative side.

Q: What role did the MPI Lab play in Expert RAW’s development?

Hamid: Any time we are creating a brand-new user experience, we have to consider and overcome many tough engineering challenges. The MPI Lab developed the main idea behind Expert RAW and its technologies, and we knew it was challenge worth pursuing.

We developed a brand-new computational photography pipeline that can produce both DNG as well as processed JPEG files. Developing a complex computational photography pipeline from scratch was not easy. We no longer had the benefit of an older, mature technology base to build upon. But our team successfully developed this new, AI-based 3DISP technology to produce raw data that looks very natural when users load it in editing apps like Adobe Lightroom.

Q: What role did SRI-B play in Expert RAW’s development? What were the team’s main areas of focus?

Girish: Expert RAW was a complex R&D project, and SRI-B’s role was to think in terms of end-to-end for the best consumer experience. This required multi-domain expertise and deep collaboration among multiple teams.

SRI-B is equipped with strong multi-domain expertise teams, so we formed a task force of talented experts. They all worked together as a single team within SRI-B and also worked with a larger team of experts based in Korea and at the MPI Lab.

The multi-domain expertise and close collaboration with all key stakeholders helped SRI-B continuously focus on improving Expert RAW’s product experience, end-to-end pipeline, etc.

Q: Could you offer more details on your collaboration with one another?

Hamid: The MPI Lab has been working with SRI-B throughout our entire history at Samsung. SRI-B contributed its amazing skillset and resources towards the development of the software technologies, as well as key AI blocks for the Expert RAW pipeline. They also owned the UI piece of the Expert RAW application and provided many innovation points on the Expert RAW experience. It’s always fun working with them.

Girish: The MPI Lab has world-class expertise in computational imaging domain, and has a proven record of developing successful IPs for Samsung flagship products. That expertise was one of the key requirements for Expert RAW’s development. The MPI Lab came up with the multi-frame pipeline building blocks implementation, which helped SRI-B integrate and enhance the same for the end-to-end architecture and pipeline.

One of the major expectations for Expert RAW was that it would enable the best image quality in different lighting conditions, which requires the tuning of the multi-frame processing pipeline. MPI’s strong expertise in this area helped us continuously improve image quality before the commercial launch. In summary, MPI’s expertise in computational imaging and SRI-B’s breadth of knowledge in multiple subdomains helped SRI-B prepare Expert RAW’s end-to-end experience for commercial launch.

SRI-B and the MPI Lab used their 12-hour time zone difference effectively to plan and collaborate on Expert RAW. SRI-B’s day was MPI’s night, and vice versa. It helped to have 24/7 development to finish this complex feature in record time. We are proud of Samsung’s culture that enables respectful collaboration among different overseas R&D centers and we always enjoy working with MPI Lab.

Q: How do the MPI Lab and SRI-B plan to build on this collaboration to develop even more innovative camera technologies?

Hamid: Our journey with the new RAW camera experience is just beginning. I am excited to think about what new improvements and enhancements we can make. One of the best parts of the Expert RAW experience is that the photographer is front and center. We’ll preserve that as we actively look into the experiences of different users and continuously implement improvements to make Expert RAW even better than before.

Girish: The MPI Lab and SRI-B have been working together for the last few years developing the world’s best night mode for Samsung flagship smartphones. This collaboration helped lead us to the success story that is Expert RAW on the Galaxy S22. We’re excited to continue that momentum for the next innovative products to come.

In the future, we would like to continuously enhance Expert RAW with a focus on creating a new ecosystem for pro photography that fully utilizes pro-grade camera capabilities.

From now on, more and more Galaxy devices will play a small part in reducing plastic waste in our oceans.

I know we still have a long way to go. And at Mobile World Congress 2022, we will share our next wave of innovations that incorporate recycled ocean-bound plastics.

In particular, the camera of the Galaxy S22 and S22+ has been positioned in such a way that it is equidistant from the devices’ horizontal and vertical edges, creating a more refined impression.

A Seamless Combination

The Galaxy S22 and S22+ both feature analogous colors in their metal camera housings and bodies, creating a sense of unity. The sleek, flat line drawn by the side frame separates it from the camera housing, creating a clean-cut appearance. The camera system, its waterproof structure and the angle of the camera housing were all redesigned and delicately refined and simplified.

Samsung designers continuously strive to raise the bar for premium smartphones even further with innovations that enhance Galaxy devices’ unique identity. Accordingly, the Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra demonstrate how Samsung has been delivering the best performance and technology while also considering ways to make it easier for users to utilize the devices and express themselves.

An Optical Illusion

The Galaxy S22 Ultra combines superior performance with a sophisticated design. Here, the scope of the Galaxy S series has been expanded by inheriting the Galaxy Note series’ simple yet sturdy design identity, which is optimized for the S Pen.

As a camera’s performance increases, it tends to grow larger and protrude more from the design. To prevent the Galaxy S22 series’ camera from sticking out, Samsung minimized the camera’s size by optimizing its design. What’s more, users can also open apps more easily with Compact Mode in the Air Command menu, and the Samsung Notes experience has become even more convenient. When users want to save a link or a web page, they can do so easily using Samsung Notes in a pop-up or split screen and keep the page they were viewing open.

One UI expands what users can do with the Galaxy S22 series. For example, when frequently used widgets are grouped using the Smart Widget function, widgets that users will find useful depending on the time and location will be automatically displayed. There’s a widget to notify users of upcoming events, as well as one that indicates when their Galaxy Buds’ batteries are low. Removing the need to open multiple widgets at once enables the home screen to be used more efficiently.

The camera has also been enhanced to allow users to take high-quality photos and videos of distant subjects and in low-light settings. Functions that improve the sharpness of selfies and remove the moiré patterns that appear when capturing TV screens or monitors have also been added to the gallery, providing a new photo-remastering experience. The photo editor’s automated AI eraser intelligently detects and removes shadows and light reflectors in a more efficient manner than if users were to select and erase objects manually.

Samsung has been leading the industry by introducing hardware (HW) and software (SW) that break the existing mold every year for the past 12 years since the unveiling of the first Galaxy S device in 2010. Some of the most game-changing so far include a large-screen smartphone with excellent immersion; a smartphone-stylus combination that enhanced productivity and creativity; and the world’s first dual-pixel camera technology. In addition, the Galaxy Note series, Galaxy tablet series and various wearable devices including Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Buds have contributed to the wider Galaxy ecosystem that has so transformed user’s lifestyles.

Ahead of the Galaxy Unpacked event set for February 10, Samsung Newsroom is providing a look back at the technological legacy of the Galaxy series. Read on to learn more about the 10 innovative Galaxy smartphone technologies that have set new standards and transformed the way we live our lives.

#1. 2010
The AMOLED Display: Bigger Is Better

One of the major benefits of a smartphone is that it allows users to enjoy content on a large screen with clear picture quality that sits right in the palm of their hand. Samsung kicked off the trend of the large screen era in the smartphone industry with the introduction of their AMOLED display. This display, developed using Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED) technology, is characterized by its clear picture quality, self-luminescence and larger screen size.

The Samsung Galaxy S was the world’s first smartphone to be launched with a Super AMOLED display, an ultra-thin screen that consumes less power and provides crisper and more vivid picture quality. With the introduction of the Galaxy S in 2010, users’ interest became piqued in obtaining bigger screens — such as the 4- to 5-inch screens of the AMOLED display compared to the conventional 3-inches on other phones — on which to fully immerse themselves in their favorite content.

Samsung has continued to take its AMOLED technology to the next level by unveiling devices with more powerful and more advanced screens, such as the Galaxy S10, the world’s first mobile device with a High Dynamic Range10+ (HDR10+) supported Dynamic AMOLED display, and the Galaxy S21 series, which features a Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with an automatic refresh rate of up to 120Hz based on the content type. Samsung’s innovative technology has enabled silky-smooth scrolling and uninterrupted viewing experiences, even on larger screens.

#2. 2011
The Galaxy Note and S Pen: Adding Analog Touch to Digital Devices

As of 2011, it became no longer necessary to keep notebooks and writing instruments in our bags at all times. With the introduction of the Galaxy Note equipped with S Pen, it is now possible to save and share everything from memos to drawings right on our smartphone’s screen. At that time, the Galaxy Note was launched with an S Pen that supported 256 levels of pressure onto the device’s large screen. Since then, both the Note and the S Pen have become inseparable, and as the series has developed, both have evolved significantly.

For example, Samsung introduced Air Command for the Galaxy Note 3 to give users easy access to signature S Pen features when hovering their S Pen over the screen. The company also then incorporated Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology into the Galaxy Note 9 S Pen so that its stylus pen could also function as a remote control. For the Galaxy Note 10, the addition of Air Action features enabled users to remotely control their device when switching camera modes or zooming in or out, a marked change from previous models which only permitted users to take photos from a distance. In line with this innovative spirit, Samsung introduced the artificial intelligence (AI)-powered S Pen for the Galaxy Note 20 in order to provide users with a more delicate and sophisticated drawing experience, and as of last year, the innovative S Pen is now available on devices such as the Galaxy S21 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold3 to expand its compatibility.

Samsung Knox: Your Trusted Mobile Bodyguard

We are now living in the era where most of our daily tasks and experiences can be undertaken all with a singular smartphone, meaning that the importance of security cannot be overemphasized. Samsung Knox has become a reliable shield for users concerned about information leakage or virus penetration.

Samsung Knox, installed on Galaxy devices since the Galaxy Note 3 in 2013, protects devices on a step-by-step basis from the chipset to the operating system (OS) and application level, while also blocking hacking and unauthorized access. In addition, thanks to its encrypted container space, a user’s personal and business data can be separated and managed safely.

In 2021, the company launched Samsung Knox Vault with the Galaxy S21 in order to thoroughly ensure the protection of ever-growing amounts of data. In addition to offering the industry’s highest level of security chipset (eSE, or embedded Secure Element) and a secure processor that prevents HW-level attacks, Samsung Knox Vault features a tamper-resistant security memory to protect a user’s various passwords and biometric information.

#4. 2014
Superb IP Rating: Ultimate Protection From Dust and Water

In the early 2010s, if you accidentally dropped your smartphone while using it in water, nothing but despair awaited you. To mitigate this, Samsung expanded the horizon of smartphone experiences by applying waterproof and dustproof functions to the Galaxy S5 for the first time in 2014.

From the Galaxy S7 in 2017 onwards, IP68,¹ the highest waterproof and dustproof rating, has been applied to Galaxy devices in order to strengthen their performance. The IP68 rating is given to devices after testing in fresh water at a depth of 1.5m for 30 minutes. Galaxy users are now able to use their smartphones with peace of mind thanks to strong waterproof and dustproof technologies.

#5. 2015
Samsung Pay: A Mobile Wallet in Your Pocket

It is no exaggeration to say that, after 2015, the trend of going ‘wallet-less’ saw a surge in increase. At this time, Samsung introduced Samsung Pay, a mobile payment service that replaces the cash and credit cards in a user’s wallet. Since this service was first introduced on the Galaxy S6 in 2015, it has established itself as a core representational service of the Galaxy smartphone.

When using public transportation, as well as when out shopping, users need just touch their smartphone instead of having to get out their wallet to pay. These days, leaving the house without a wallet has become a normal habit.

Advanced Camera Technology: The World’s First Dual Pixel Sensor

Smartphone camera technologies are advancing day by day, to the extent at which if you have a smartphone, you’re able to capture pictures and videos comparable to that of professionals.

In 2016, Samsung raised the smartphone camera function to a new level by installing the industry’s first dual pixel in the Galaxy S7. At that time, the dual pixel was an image sensor only seen in high-end digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras. By increasing the amount of light received by both the front and rear cameras, the Galaxy S7 was able to focus quickly and accurately, as well as take optimal photos in dark environments.

Samsung then combined an Ultra-Wide angle lens and intelligent SW in the Galaxy S10 to help users take even sharper pictures. The Galaxy S20 features a remarkable four quad cameras, raising the level of camera functionality once again. In particular, the optical zoom performance has been greatly improved; Galaxy S20 Ultra users can harness the Space Zoom function to zoom in up to 100 times, allowing them to take clear pictures of the night sky.

One UI: Making My Own Galaxy

One UI is an interface that supports the unique user experience of Samsung Galaxy, and was first introduced in November 2018.

By dividing the viewing area and the touching area, the layout of One UI allows users to comfortably perform all operations with just one hand, and all necessary essential functions are included concisely on-screen so that everyone and anyone is able to use it easily. One UI is also characterized by a unified user experience as it has been applied consistently to devices across the Galaxy ecosystem, including smartphones, tablets and wearables.

One UI 4, updated last year, harnesses a completely different color palette with which to decorate a device’s home screen, icons, notifications and wallpapers in your own style. In addition, One UI 4 features strengthened security features, such as allowing users to easily select what to share and what to keep private in order to keep up with users who increasingly value their individuality and their privacy.

Galaxy Z Series: The Dawn of the Era of Foldable Smartphones

In 2019, Samsung pioneered the field of foldable smartphones by unveiling the world’s first Galaxy Z Fold, equipped with a 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Display.

Samsung’s newly developed hinge technology makes it possible to open and close the smartphone as smoothly as one opens a book, and offers users secure, long-lasting flexibility that passed a test to withstand 200,000 folds. In 2020, the company’s foldable lineup was expanding to include the Galaxy Z Flip, which features a compact design as the screen unfolds vertically.

Samsung not only pioneered a new form factor, but also new usability options through such functions as Flex mode, which allows for more usage scenarios by fixing the hinge at a specific angle, and Multi-Active Window, which can open and run apps at the same time with applications optimized for the foldable screen for a split screen view.

Last year, Samsung expanded their foldable lineup with the Galaxy Z Fold3, which saw the inclusion of an S Pen and waterproof and dustproof technology, and the colorful, pastel-toned Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition, leading the era of foldable popularization.

#9. 2021
An AI-Powered Eraser: Removing Unwanted Objects From Photos

As part of Samsung’s mission to expand the application of innovative AI technologies to all smartphones, the company introduced the Object Eraser feature that lets you remove any unwanted objects in your photos with just a touch.

The Object Eraser function, first introduced in the Galaxy S21 in 2021, is a photo editing tool that harnesses artificial intelligence. Simply by touching the object you want to remove from a photo and tapping the ‘object erase’ button, the object is deleted without the need for a separate editing program. Currently, this function is available on smartphones with One UI 3.1 or higher, such as the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Z Fold3.

Samsung first applied its AI-powered interface, Bixby, to the Galaxy S8 in 2017, and now users can control their major Galaxy devices using only their voice. In addition, Samsung has been incorporating AI technologies into its device OS, battery and camera in order to improve performance and convenience.

#10. 2021
Galaxy for the Planet: For a Sustainable Future

Samsung is fully committed to minimizing the environmental impact of its products throughout the entire lifecycle of its smartphones, from the design to the production stage through to their usage and disposal, in order to ensure that Galaxy smartphones contribute to greater environmental sustainability. Under the sustainability vision of its Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, “Galaxy for the Planet,” Samsung is consistently working to achieve a circular economy by reusing and recycling resources in order to build a better Galaxy ecosystem.

One such effort towards sustainability is a reduction of plastic usage in smartphone packaging. The percentage of plastics used in the Galaxy S21 packaging accounts for a mere 4 percent of the total weight, cutting down the waste generated per packaging unit by 49 percent as compared with that of the Galaxy S7. In addition, the Galaxy S21 packaging contains only 58 percent of the paper used in that of the Galaxy S7, helping save some 44,802 trees a year. Samsung plans to exclude plastic materials in its product packaging and apply recycled materials to all of its products in the MX division by 2025.

The products set to be unveiled at Galaxy Unpacked 2022 are drawing attention thanks to the revelation that they have been designed using eco-conscious materials recycled from marine waste. Samsung has succeeded in transforming discarded fishing nets, a major contributor to marine pollution, into a material with which to produce smart devices, and the company plans to apply this material to all its products in the future.

¹ IP (Degree of Ingress Protection, IP Code) is a product-related protection technology standard established by the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) and is applied to various IT products and industrial devices. IP68 is the highest rating for dust and water resistance. Ip68 has a waterproof function that can withstand 1.5m of clear water for 30 minutes, but it is recommended that the device be washed off immediately after contact with water and then dried.

Starting on February 4, Samsung’s “Tiger in the City” campaign will bring a giant 3D tiger roaring to life on digital 3D displays in five of the world’s most vibrant cities – New York, London, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur and Seoul. The disruptive 3D tiger will burst through digital barriers to showcase how Samsung’s next smartphone lineup is set to help users own the night with new advancements to its low-light smartphone photography technology.

By channeling the image of the tiger, Samsung is also embracing its own innovative past following over a decade of refusing to play it safe and driving the mobile innovations that shape our world. With its new larger-than-life campaign, Samsung is inviting you to see and feel this vision up close at street level ahead of the Galaxy Unpacked 2022 event on February 9.

These days, when it comes to capturing precious moments, spectacular weather, or a delicious dish, a smartphone camera is an absolute necessity. It should come as no surprise that, according to a Samsung survey, an overwhelming number of consumers rank the camera and camera-related features among the top three factors that matter most when buying a new smartphone. The camera’s importance has been amplified as social media platforms have grown more popular, and as more smartphone users have begun to create their own content.

Since releasing its first camera phone, the SCH-V200, in 2000, Samsung has remained a leader in the industry by relentlessly advancing the camera phone segment. The Galaxy S series’ innovative cameras are the culmination of years of experience developing groundbreaking technologies. Follow along as we explore just how much the series’ cameras have evolved over the last 11 years – from the launch of the very first Galaxy S in 2010, all the way up to the recently introduced Galaxy S21.

The first Galaxy S device featured a VGA-class front camera that was capable of making video calls, as well as a 5-megapixel (MP) rear camera that could record HD videos. The rear camera also included built-in autofocus, facial recognition and anti-shake functions, and featured a Panorama Shot mode, which allowed users to capture an image of a scene that was much wider than what they saw on their screen.

Introduced a year after the Galaxy S, the Galaxy S2 featured a thoroughly enhanced camera. Included among the upgrades were boosts in pixel counts – 2 megapixels in the front and 8 megapixels in the rear – and an LED flash to facilitate night shots. Other fun additions included an improved autofocus feature, which made it easier to focus the camera on a desired subject, and a cartoon-inspired feature that transformed photos into hand-drawn images.

Introduced with 2012’s Galaxy S3, Burst Shot offered users the perfect tool for capturing blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moments like fun jump-in-the-air shots. Both the 1.9MP front camera and the 8MP rear camera supported the mode, which allowed users to take up to 20 pictures in 3.3 seconds. The cameras also featured a Best Photo mode, which helped users select the best photo out of eight continuous shots, and a Zero Shutter Lag mode, which guaranteed that there would be no delay between the moment the user tapped the shutter button and the picture was produced.

The Galaxy S4 ushered in the era of 10-plus megapixel cameras by combining a 2MP front camera with a 13MP rear camera. The smartphone also introduced features that changed how users captured special moments, and in doing so, transformed their pictures into stories. For example, the camera’s Dual Shot mode allowed users to capture images with both cameras at the same time, producing a photo in which the photographer and the subject occupied the same frame. Other features unique to the Galaxy S4’s camera experience included Sound & Shot, which allowed users to record audio to accompany their images, and Drama Shot, which let users take multiple pictures in quick succession and combine them into an image that tells the story better than a single photo could.

The Galaxy S5 was a landmark release, as it was the first smartphone in the industry to feature a 16MP ISOCELL camera. The ISOCELL image sensor enhanced image quality with less cross-pixel interference, making it possible to take clearer pictures even in the dark. The camera also featured an upgraded HDR mode for enhancing photos. When taking pictures or recording videos, applying the HDR feature allowed users to enjoy vibrant images even in dimly lit rooms or environments with heavy backlighting.

To make it easier for smartphone users to capture more moments, Samsung introduced a Quick Launch function with the Galaxy S6 that allowed users to launch the camera in just 0.7 seconds, simply by tapping the home button twice on any screen. A function that automatically tracked and focused on moving objects enhanced image sharpness, while a 5MP F1.9 lens was installed on the front to boost selfie quality.

The Galaxy S7 incorporated a dual pixel image sensor – a technology featured in high-end DSLR cameras – to allow users to quickly snap crisp and clear photos even when they’re in the dark. The sensor worked by splitting every pixel into two photodiodes for on-chip phase detection, providing vastly improved autofocus performance. The camera also introduced a selfie flash mode, which would cause the screen to flash when taking a selfie to produce a brighter shot. Together, the Galaxy S7’s camera innovations achieved a then-record DxOMark Mobile Score of 88 points.

A perfect photo requires proper lighting and minimal movement from your subject. Unfortunately, while those may be the perfect conditions, they’re also conditions that we rarely find ourselves in when taking a shot.

To help users snap better photos, the Galaxy S8 introduced an improved image signal process algorithm that ensured clear, stable images regardless of time or place. It achieved this by taking three consecutive photos and selecting the best one. Because the device’s large, 6.2-inch¹ display could prove difficult for some to manage with one hand, gesture-based controls were also introduced to help users operate the camera. For example, with the camera open, swiping left or right with your thumb would toggle filters or modes, while swiping up or down would allow you to switch between the front and rear cameras or zoom in or out.

To help ensure that users’ photos would come out well in various environments, the Galaxy S9 introduced a Dual Aperture camera that would automatically adjust to ambient light just like the human eye – widening in the dark and shrinking in bright light. The camera featured the brightest F1.5/F2.4 lens available in a smartphone at the time, which allowed it to absorb approximately 28 percent more light than the previous model, resulting in clearer pictures even in dark settings.

Samsung also enhanced the camera with functions designed to help users express themselves more effectively. The camera’s Super Slow-mo feature allowed users to record videos at 960 frames per second, making it possible to capture movements or moments that are too fast for the human eye to see. Once they finished recording, the function made it easy for users to share these epic slow-mo moments as GIFs on social media. Another notable addition was AR Emoji – a function that utilized the camera and augmented reality technology to allow users to create AR avatars that could mimic their facial expressions in real time.

By the time the Galaxy S10 was released in 2019, smartphone users were creating more content than ever before. To cater to this trend, the Galaxy S10 introduced Super Steady mode. The function greatly enhanced the quality of users’ recordings through video stabilization, making it perfect for recording smooth content when enjoying activities like cycling and dancing. The Galaxy S10’s HDR10+ support produced true-to-life colors in users’ videos, while its 16MP Ultra Wide Camera captured scenes as users saw them with a field of view that was similar to the human eye (123 degrees).

The Galaxy S20’s outstanding performance raised the bar for smartphone photography. Both the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s 108MP camera, as well as the 64MP shooter equipping the Galaxy S20 and S20+, were designed to capture each and every detail in a given scene.

Perhaps the most eye-catching camera enhancement was the Space Zoom function, which paired Hybrid Optic Zoom with AI-powered digital zoom. This allowed users to zoom much further into images – up to 100x in the case of the Galaxy S20 Ultra. In addition to supporting 8K video recording, the camera also included an upgraded Super Steady mode that took camera stability a step further thanks to an anti-rolling stabilizer and AI-based motion analysis.

To offer users the ability to capture moments of their lives in more meaningful ways, Samsung equipped the Galaxy S21 series with a pro-grade camera that enhances content using on-device AI. The Galaxy S21 Ultra is the first Samsung smartphone to feature two telephoto lenses, and boasts five cameras in all: a 40MP (F2.2) front camera, a 12MP (F2.2) rear ultra-wide camera, a 108MP (F1.8) rear main camera, a 10MP (F4.9) rear telephoto camera, and a 10MP (F2.4) rear telephoto camera. The Galaxy S21 and S21+, meanwhile, feature a total of four cameras: a 10MP (F2.2) front camera, a 12MP (F2.2) rear ultra-wide camera, a 12MP (F1.8) rear main camera, and a 64MP (F4.9) rear telephoto camera.

The cameras of the Galaxy S21 series are packed with features designed to help you capture the moments that matter most. The combination of anti-shake technology, 10x optical zoom, and both laser and dual-pixel autofocus enables the cameras to produce results that rival those of high-end DSLRs. The new Director’s View feature, meanwhile, helps users pick the perfect lens for their photo by placing three preview screens beneath the camera’s viewfinder. The Galaxy S21 series also offers creators the ability to utilize the selfie and rear cameras simultaneously to create unforgettable video content.

Each camera additionally supports 4K video recording at 60fps (frames per second), and the dual telephoto lens setup is especially adept at capturing vivid photos from virtually any distance. Furthermore, with an upgraded 108MP lens and nona-binning technology, the Galaxy S21 series ensure bright and clear photos even in low-light environments.

Since debuting in 2010, the Galaxy S series has brought users closer to the world around them, made their lives more convenient, and offered them unprecedented mobile experiences with one groundbreaking innovation after another.

Today, 11 years since its official launch, the series remains as innovative as ever. Join us as we take a trip down memory lane and revisit each and every model in the Galaxy S series’ rich history.

The first Galaxy S device was announced in 2010 under the tagline “Super Smart.” The culmination of 20 years of hard work in the mobile industry, the Galaxy S introduced three S’s, as it were: ‘super’ applicability to users’ daily lives and needs, the then-latest version of a Super AMOLED display panel, and a 9.9mm-thin ‘super’ design.

The success of the Galaxy S paved the way for the release of the Galaxy S2 in 2011, which introduced improvements in build quality. The device, which is still regarded as a masterpiece, launched with an upgraded Super AMOLED Plus display as well as the then-most powerful smartphone processor on the market, the Exynos 4 Dual (4210). While the Galaxy S2’s 4.27-inch display was larger than the Galaxy S’s 4-inch panel, the device itself was thinner than its predecessor, measuring just 8.49mm thick. The smartphone’s camera also introduced a convenient flashlight function.

The gentle curves of the Galaxy S3’s pebble-inspired design broke the stereotype that smartphones were all sharp-edged. The device featured a 4.8-inch display and a 2,100mAh-capacity removable battery, and introduced a variety of convenient functions. These include Smart Stay, which uses the front camera to sense when you are looking at your device and prevents the screen from turning off; Direct Call, which allows you to call a contact immediately when you bring your phone to your ear; and Live Video List, which offers a thumbnail view of video clips in the video player.

Announced a year later, the Galaxy S4 featured a design that resembled a Galaxy S3 with thinner bezels. It took Samsung just 6 months to sell more than 40 million units of the newer model. Weighing 130 grams and measuring 7.9mm thick, the device was thinner and lighter than the Galaxy S3. It also featured a larger display, which measured 4.99 inches and was the first to be made of scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass 3. In addition to enhancing the smartphones’ hardware, Samsung introduced key software improvements in the form of convenient features such as Smart Scroll, which allows you to scroll through content by slightly tilting your device forward or backward, and Smart Pause, which allows the video player to pause playback when you look away from the screen.

The Galaxy S5 was an optimal device that did everything that a smartphone should do while maintaining the Galaxy series’ unique design identity. It was the first device in the industry to feature an ISOCELL camera, which made it more useful for recording moments from everyday life. It was also the first smartphone to feature a heart rate sensor that could be linked with other devices to monitor users’ fitness levels. On top of that, it was the very first Galaxy S model to offer IP67 water and dust resistance, which allowed users to stay connected without worrying about rain or splashes damaging their device.

Released in 2015, the Galaxy S6 marked a new chapter for the series by introducing yet another innovative design element. Its first-of-its-kind display, which was curved on both sides, fostered a unique three-dimensional effect and a more immersive viewing experience. Crafted from metal and glass, the device was both remarkably original and beautiful. The Galaxy S6 models were also the first in the series to support wireless charging and the Samsung Pay service.

The Galaxy S7 was introduced as a series that included two distinct models: the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. Both featured IP68 water and dust resistance, and for users’ convenience, both included a hybrid Nano SIM and microSD card slot that supported microSD cards of up to 200GB. The devices were the first to introduce a dual pixel image sensor, which delivered crisp and clear photos even in low-light conditions. The camera also featured a Motion panorama mode, which allowed users to take pictures of wide scenes that could be viewed as moving photos.

The year 2017 was a time when the Galaxy S series underwent significant changes in terms of both design and performance.

For a start, the Galaxy S8 series was the first to feature Samsung’s edge-to-edge, bezel-less Infinity Display, which introduced a new 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The S8 models were also the first in the series to swap physical keys for on-screen buttons, which accentuate their sleek designs, in addition to being the first to feature Samsung’s virtual assistant, Bixby, which has proven particularly useful for managing your device when your hands are full. Moreover, the incorporation of facial recognition technology made the Galaxy S8 the only smartphone series to offer fingerprint, iris and facial recognition-based biometric authentication.

The Galaxy S8 added a fun new element to users’ daily routines by enabling them to interact with Bixby. The Galaxy S9 added to that fun by offering a unique user experience that encompassed photos, videos and emojis. The camera’s AR Emoji feature allowed users to create their own augmented reality avatars that could be used to snap selfies, while its Super Slow-mo function enabled it to track objects’ movement to record epic super slow-motion videos. Other new additions included support for SmartThings, which turns your smartphone into a handy remote control for managing connected devices, and Samsung DeX, which allows you to use your smartphone or tablet to power a PC-like experience.

The launch of the Galaxy S10 underlined Samsung’s commitment to offering consumers the freedom to pick the perfect smartphone for their needs. The series featured a total of four unique models: the Galaxy S10, S10e, S10+, and S10 5G. Each boasted an Infinity-O Display, which featured an all-screen design that included a tiny circular cut-out for the front camera, as well as Dynamic AMOLED technology that had been certified to deliver 100 percent mobile color volume in the DCI-P3 color range. In all, the Galaxy S10 introduced a variety of intelligent features including Wireless PowerShare, which essentially lets users use their phone as a wireless charging pad.

By incorporating 5G support into each model, the Galaxy S20 series marked the beginning of a new era for mobile devices. The combination of the series’ largest image sensor yet and powerful AI tools guaranteed clear photos and videos, while a 120Hz AMOLED display opened the door for more immersive viewing and gaming experiences. The Galaxy S20 Ultra’s pro-grade, 108-megapixel camera represented a massive leap forward for resolution, allowing users to zoom in up to 100x to capture moments and details that they may have missed. Samsung also enhanced the devices with a secure processor that worked in conjunction with its mobile security platform, Knox, to ensure that users’ data would remain protected even from advanced hardware attacks.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra is the first device in the series to include support for Samsung’s signature S Pen. The combination of the S Pen and the available S View Flip Cover allows users to take full advantage of the S Pen experience. The Galaxy S21 Ultra is also the first Samsung smartphone to feature two telephoto lenses offering 10x optical zoom and up to 100x Space zoom. With a large, 6.8-inch display, the Galaxy S21 Ultra offers users a more immersive and enriching mobile experience.

The device’s front and rear are seamlessly integrated to complete the camera’s eye-catching design. Advanced AI technology makes the Galaxy S21’s camera Samsung’s smartest yet, enabling features that make every day epic by helping users capture the best possible photo or video. In addition to producing clearer selfies, the technology offers users the ability to snap portrait photos that look like they were taken by a professional, and lets them enhance their shots with various background effects. It also supports a new Zoom Lock feature, which compensates for smartphone users’ tendency to shake the camera slightly when zooming in to take a picture at high magnification. The new Director’s View feature, meanwhile, helps users pick the perfect lens for their recording by placing three preview screens beneath the camera’s viewfinder. It allows users to capture multiple moments and points of view within the same video, without the need for additional editing.

Other convenient enhancements include the ability to record 8K videos that are longer than one hour, an upgraded blue light filter, a fingerprint sensor that’s not only larger than the previous model but also twice as fast, and a feature that allows users to mirror websites on virtually any device after logging into their Samsung account.

The next-gen communications technology is already bringing consumers in some markets advanced capabilities, offering faster download speeds and superior connectivity for everything from streaming high-quality, 4K videos to cloud gaming and connecting with their offices and schools from wherever they are. Despite a challenging year, Samsung has continued to push 5G forward to bring those capabilities to more people around the world.

With consumers also looking to extend the lifecycle of their devices with future-proof functionality, there’s never been a better time to make the leap to the Galaxy 5G ecosystem.

It’s hard to overstate the urgency of this issue. Thankfully, people around the world, especially the younger generation, are realizing the importance of environmentally conscious consumption, and are adopting products and solutions that put the planet first. A Decade of Going Green

The evolution of Galaxy devices’ packaging can be summed up with what could be called the three R’s: reducing paper use by streamlining packaging’s dimensions, replacing plastic with paper, and removing unnecessary components by simplifying packaging’s structure. Adhering to these green values enabled Samsung to make the Galaxy S10+’s packaging 30g lighter than that of its predecessor.

The Galaxy S series’ environmentally conscious packaging is the culmination of 10 years of hard work. Two thousand twelve’s Galaxy S3 was the first device in the series to feature recycled material in its packaging. The next year, Samsung officially introduced its first environmentally conscious mobile packaging, created using discarded paper, with the Galaxy S4. The Galaxy S5 and more recent entries in the series have added even more environmentally conscious elements to the mix, including biodegradable vinyl¹ and petroleum-free soy ink.

Design Team member Mogwon Son discussed how Samsung equipped last year’s Galaxy S10 with eco-friendly packaging consisting of FSC-certified paper boxes, as well as plastic- and vinyl-free interior components. “We abandoned the holder tray and the box-covering sleeve, but kept the bottom box, which includes an all-in-one pulp mold,” said Son.² “This pulp mold, which utilizes pulp slurry made from bamboo fibers and sugarcane bagasse, is better for the environment, and helps minimize waste.”

To further minimize waste, the plastic films that were used to wrap accessories like chargers and earphones have been phased out. Now, Galaxy devices’ earphones and cables come neatly packed in a paper box. So too do their chargers, which also now feature matte finishes rather than the glossy sheens that previously required protective plastic film.

Sustainability Meets Style

Durability, aesthetics, and suitability for mass production – these are the most important elements of packaging design. Because the Galaxy S series is Samsung’s flagship smartphone line, consumers expect these products and their packaging to look and feel as premium as possible. As Son explained, the process of creating a premium packaging design with recycled materials presented some unique challenges.

“First of all, it can be difficult to apply specific colors to a pulp mold,” said Son. “The surface of this material is curved and rough, which means that coloring it will require some retouches. Once it’s formed, the pulp mold may appear reddish or blue, and it can look like it’s stained depending on the recycled materials that were used to create it. In the end, the process of achieving a clean and even black hue required a lot of trial and error.”

According to Son, the process of making Samsung’s existing packaging processes greener presented a number of challenges. The team overcame those hurdles, he explained, by devoting the time, money and effort necessary to make it happen.

“Sure, it was difficult, but the reason it was difficult is that these designs need to keep up with the needs of the times,” said Son. “In the end, we wanted to offer a better experience with paper packaging than users would have with plastic or vinyl. This is why we chose to accentuate the soft texture of the pulp material itself, and devoted a great deal of effort to refining the packaging’s exterior.”

Not only has the team’s hard work made Samsung’s packaging more sustainable, it’s also made it that much more convenient. Whereas in the past, users would need to separate packaging components in order to properly dispose of them, because the Galaxy S20’s packaging is crafted entirely from paper, it’s 100-percent recyclable.

“I’ve made it my mission to create high-quality packaging that can be recycled easily to help protect the environment,” said Son. “To achieve this, I started to consider how the packaging would ultimately be discarded and recycled from the initial planning stage. Going forward, I’ll continue to explore sustainable packaging designs based on the philosophy, ‘the fewer, the better.’”

Putting Plastic Waste to Work with Environmentally Conscious Cases

At first glance, the Galaxy S20+’s Kvadrat case appears stylish and modern. Thin, but durable enough to protect the device from the wear and tear of everyday life.

Upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that there’s more to this particular case than meets the eye. That’s because the Galaxy S20+’s Kvadrat case has been made through upcycling – a process in which end-of-life products are transformed into new, environmentally conscious products and materials. Using this process, Samsung and premium Danish textile brand Kvadrat can produce two striking Galaxy S20+ cases from a single 500ml plastic bottle.

Samsung’s collaboration with Kvadrat, an environmentally conscious company that has obtained the European Union’s famously rigorous Ecolabel certification, dates back to 2018. The project’s lead designer, Yoonyoung Kim, explained how she arranged to meet with Kvadrat prior to attending an overseas furniture exhibition. When she visited Kvadrat’s showroom in Milan, she fell in love with the textiles on display.

When the companies eventually kicked off their collaboration, the process of meeting Samsung’s premium design standards without sacrificing Kvadrat’s charming aesthetic required a fair bit of coordination.

Much like aesthetics, durability is key when it comes to smartphone cases. This meant that the Galaxy S20+’s Kvadrat case would need to be not just thin, but ladder-proof as well. To achieve this, Kim worked with developers to find a way to prevent the case’s knitted fabric from unraveling at its edges. After testing out a variety of methods, her team managed to optimize the finishing process, and enhance Samsung’s equipment to properly manufacture the products. The result of these extensive efforts is one beautiful ‘green’ case – the first product produced in collaboration with the company to feature the Kvadrat logo.

Recently, global fashion houses have been increasing their investment in environmentally conscious materials. The trend, Kim explained, is about shunning leather and polyurethane-coated materials in favor of more environmentally conscious alternatives.

“When compared to typical synthetic polyester yarns, the recycled yarns used in this case are less uniform in diameter, and they’re so delicate that it’s difficult to weave them into elaborate patterns, which requires a careful and exacting finishing process,” said Kim. “Going green is not a fad – it’s a global shift in perception, and the mission of all manufacturers. Therefore, we cannot stop here. Through our ongoing partnership with Kvadrat, we will continue to create innovative accessory designs that combine expressive patterns and colors with optimum usability.”

Promoting Environmentally Conscious Lifestyles

Kim is correct in her assertion that going green is not a fad, but a mission that we should all get behind, as we live on a planet with limited resources. The aforementioned UNEP report also emphasizes our communal role in solving environmental issues, noting that governments, businesses and individuals should each do their part.

When it comes to going green, both designers stress the importance of taking a step-by-step approach until greenness has become fully engrained in our lives. They acknowledge that starting this transition can be difficult, and sticking to it can be even more so. “At the moment, the idea of going green may be viewed as a trend, and while there is a consensus that everyone should follow it, there is a possibility that this trend could fade later on,” both said in unison. “We sincerely hope that this isn’t the case, and that environmental consciousness becomes a deeply rooted aspect of our lives.”

The designers will continue to work tirelessly to persuade mobile device users to adopt a more environmentally conscious lifestyle. “I think that designing simple packaging like this is important,” said Son, “and I will continue to do my part to find materials that satisfy users from the moment they open the packaging until the moment they dispose of it.”

“By utilizing materials that not only allow us to create all-new designs with natural and beautiful colors – something which was previously thought to be possible only with delicate natural fibers – but are also environmentally conscious even at the injection molding stage,” added Kim, “I will continue to do my best to ensure that the products we develop offer users the satisfaction of contributing to making the world a better place for all.”

The latest addition to Samsung’s Galaxy S series, the Galaxy S10+, was recently rated “Best of Test” by PROTESTE, the largest consumer protection association in Latin America.

The Galaxy S10+ took the top spot in PROTESTE’s smartphone rankings with a record-setting score of 85 points (out of 100). In second and third place are the Galaxy S10 with 84 points, and the Note9 with 83. The Galaxy S10e ranked sixth with 82 points, and the Galaxy S9+ ranked eighth with 81, which means that half of the top ten smartphones in PROTESTE’s rankings are Samsung Galaxy devices.

The Galaxy S10+ stood out in a variety of tests, and was particularly impressive in the portion that evaluated resistance to shocks and water. To test the Galaxy S10+’s durability, PROTESTE repeatedly dropped the device from a height of 90cm, and immersed it in a container of water for an extended period of time.

“We evaluated points that are often extremely important to consumers, such as resistance and the battery,” said Thiago Leite Porto e Silva, a specialist in technology products at PROTESTE. “The Galaxy S10+ exceeded our expectations, and surprised us with the highest grade ever earned in our tests.”

The Galaxy S10+’s top ranking is a testament to the innovation of its features. “This ranking demonstrates that the consumer is at the center of our efforts and development, and will always be our main driving force,” said Jeonghwan Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of Samsung Electronics Latin America.

Samsung Electronics today announced that Galaxy S10+ has taken the number one rank on the DxOMark Selfie scale, a new ranking system to evaluate the image quality of smartphone front cameras. The new smartphone also earned a first place spot for its rear camera in the DxOMark Mobile scale.
