Just as people are at the heart of everything Samsung does, people are also what can be relied upon when communities are faced with hardship. This has been most recently observed across India, when Samsung Electronics employees and partners mustered resources and went to the aid of their neighbors amid the country’s second wave of COVID-19.

Read on to learn about some of the remarkable ways these normal people have been reaching out to their friends and neighbors to do what they can to help alleviate the struggles brought about by the pandemic.

From Samsung Call Center Workers to Emergency Fact Checkers

As the second wave of COVID swelled across India, the need for cohesive lists of available hospitals, supplies and other crucial information prompted Samsung to establish their Samsung Covid Support Group helpdesks. But the team quickly came to realize that their existing lists were in desperate need of verification – and fast.

In order to help overcome this challenge, five Samsung call center workers were called upon to verify the existing lists in order to allow people to access relief. Even as some of the team members’ own family battled COVID, the team set out to update the availability of supplies, managing to cut the lists to 20 percent of their original size.

Despite the daunting nature of this task, the team continues to verify and edit these crucial lists on a weekly basis. The information is being shared with both service providers and Samsung employees all over the nation who further distribute it to those who need it. The work of Samsung India’s call center task group demonstrates how a small, concentrated effort can come to help a lot of people.

Encouraging People to Donate Plasma Through the Power of Social Media

While donating plasma following the recovery of several of his family members from COVID, Samsung sales manager Manik Kanade was reminded of a key message from his childhood favorite book, Rudyard Kipling’s ‘The Jungle Book’, that centers around the idea of helping others.

Having understood how important plasma donation was to those undergoing treatment for COVID, Kanade was inspired and took to several forms of social media in order to dispel misconceptions about the plasma donation process, subsequently gathering a group of over 3,000 willing volunteers to help spread the message.

In April and May, at the peak of the second swell of COVID in India, Kanade’s efforts saw over 200 volunteers donate plasma to help others. Thanks to the network he has built in his area providing information and support about COVID relief, Kanade has become the go-to for COVID relief information in his area.

Distributing Food to Those in Need

Samsung partner Samsu Ali is the successful business owner of Chennai Mobiles, a chain of smartphone retail stores in the southern Indian city of Coimbatore. But he did not have the easiest start in life; as a child, he spent his time working odd jobs in order to prevent himself and his family from going hungry.

Understanding that the lockdowns throughout 2020 and 2021 that the pandemic has precipitated would hit those who live on the streets the hardest, Ali is now using his position to help give back to his community. Having mustered 40 of his employees as volunteers, he and his team prepare food and distribute it through as many affected neighborhoods as possible.

As well as providing food for around 700 to 800 people a day, Ali is also providing groceries and financial aid to the people of his city. Ali is one of the many Samsung partners in India – whose cumulative store count in India totals over 200,000 – who have engaged in philanthropic work since the start of the COVID pandemic.

Delivering Food Made by Family to COVID Relief Camps

Samsung intern Yashjeet Varshney has fond memories of the community kitchens his parents loved setting up when he was a child. When the second wave of the pandemic came around and a neighbor was admitted to a relief camp for treatment with no one to feed his children, it came as natural for Varshney and his mother to provide food for the kids and their father.

Upon arrival at the relief camp, however, Varshney could not help but wonder how many of the other patients were in need of food, and so he and his mother decided to step in. With his mother preparing nutritious meals, Varshney packs and delivers them to the relief camp – all while attending virtual meetings as part of his Samsung internship.

Even contracting and recuperating from COVID did not stop Varshney, who instead got back to work at his family food delivery system as soon as he recovered with a renewed sense of how important the gestures he and his family were able to make were to the people in the relief camp.

The efforts of Samsung employees and partners in India to provide assistance during the country’s second COVID-19 wave show how small, coordinated actions taken in a timely manner can come to have a huge impact.

Along with the people-first attitudes of their employees and partners, the company itself has also pledged 5 million USD to help India overcome the challenges brought about by the second wave of COVID in the country, added new Samsung Smart Healthcare centers at government hospitals for faster diagnosis at government hospitals and vaccinated over 50,000 employees and their family members.

Reliance Jio Infocomm and Samsung Electronics today announced their continued partnership to bring LTE coverage to 99 percent of the Indian population and significantly improve network capacity across the country. Adding to the joint effort is the deployment of a nationwide cellular IoT network.

It has not been long since Jio brought a radical digital revolution to India. Now, the company is ready to pave the way for a fully digital India, in which IoT will reach every corner of the country’s society and economy. The IoT network, the first of its kind in the country, will support a variety of consumer and enterprise use cases such as vehicle tracking, smart appliances, smart metering, security, surveillance and more.

“Making sure that everyone benefits from mobile broadband that is both available and affordable to all is our top priority. We will once again partner with Samsung to offer a suite of innovative services for all users,” said Jyotindra Thacker, President of Reliance Jio Infocomm.

“We are delighted to contribute to Jio’s success story and rapid growth. We have been striving to offer the best experience possible to all users at Jio. Jio’s LTE network will unlock the potential of IoT and promise a much more convenient and safe environment for users,” said Youngky Kim, President and Head of Networks Business at Samsung Electronics.

The NB-IoT service not only utilizes the existing spectrum held by Jio, but is also enabled by a simple software upgrade of the already installed base stations. Further deployed is the new and dedicated Cellular IoT virtualized core. The commercial NB-IoT network successfully established by Jio and Samsung in Mumbai in February 2018 will soon impact other parts of the country with new and compelling use cases.

The agreement represents another phase of collaboration between the two companies, in which the targeted outcomes are faster internet access for users across India, as well as the generation of unexplored services and business models for enterprises.

About Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited:

It is future ready and can be easily upgraded to support even more data, as technologies advance on to 5G, 6G and beyond.

Samsung announced today its innovative “I&G (Infill & Growth) Project” for Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd in India. This joint project was established to upgrade current LTE mobile communication services across India by expanding both the current network capacity as well as network coverage.

The project sets a high benchmark for LTE services in India through wider coverage, in-building penetration and the highest speeds, regardless of the user’s location. Utilizing spectrum in the 850, 1800 and 2300MHz bands, it will enable seamless indoor and outdoor coverage in dense urban areas. The project will also extend Jio’s superiority in rural areas by expanding its reach to over 90% of the population.

Previously, Samsung provided the LTE core, base stations and solutions required for VoLTE services, as well as massive deployment services for establishing a nationwide network for Jio. The two companies have successfully established the world’s largest greenfield LTE network.

“I am excited to announce our new project with Samsung,” said Jyotindra Thacker, President of Reliance Jio Infocomm. “We successfully achieved 100 million subscribers in 170 days, making us the fastest-growing company in the world, and the numbers continue to rapidly grow. It was possible because we introduced a truly effective LTE service, Pan-India. We are committed to bringing game-changing digital experiences to India with superior ecosystems, mobile content, all-IP networks and ongoing process innovations.”

“As Jio’s end-to-end LTE solutions partner, it is a great pleasure for Samsung to contribute to Jio’s tremendous success,” said Youngky Kim, President and Head of Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “The massive deployment of over a million cells across India is especially remarkable. We will strive to create new paradigms for LTE-Advanced Pro and 5G by closely cooperating with Jio as a unified workforce.”

Jio stands as an innovator which transformed the telecommunications sector in India last year. The company has already established itself as the leading data service provider in the country within a few months of commencing operations. It was also India’s first operator to introduce free-of-charge High Definition calls (VoLTE). This is especially notable, as this approach is now becoming a new market rule in India.

Samsung, as Jio’s strategic partner, has established a foundation for Indians to enjoy exclusive services, including voice calls, with data as their engine. It has also gone a step further, enabling Jio to offer a superior service to its users by providing professional solutions such as Samsung VoLTE, Quality Monitoring and Analysis (VoMA) and Cognitive Traffic Monitoring and Optimizer for a superior user experience. Further, it was through Samsung’s VoMA that the steady management of high traffic in data-dense environments was enabled. The tools monitor and optimize mobile data services, and have successfully contributed to enabling Jio to provide its subscribers with a stable and improved user experience.

The relationship between Jio and Samsung goes back to 2012, when the two companies signed a turn-key agreement covering the entire scope of network, ranging from equipment to establishment and maintenance services.

Further insights will be announced at Jio and Samsung’s joint press conference on February 28 at MWC 2017.

About Jio

Despite being from Bihar, a rural province in northeastern India, Mayank Mohan was surprised how little he really knew about his home country before he joined Samsung. “I grew up in Bihar, and I went to university in Delhi, but that was it,” he said. “The first time I traveled by plane was when I came to Korea. The first time I saw the ocean was on that flight.”

After joining the Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics as a product manager in 2010, he began to learn. Mohan was assigned to the product management team, developing refrigerators for India (along with Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka).

Learning About India as a Product Manager

As a product manager, meeting new people is an essential part of unlocking the nuances and patterns of the region, visiting people’s homes and getting feedback from business partners and local sales teams. Whereas once he had not really known India and perhaps taken it for granted, his job at Samsung quickly caused him to truly learn about his country and its great diversity.

Mohan soon discovered how something as simple as color can vary widely from area to area. In Mumbai, consumers prefer Western-style refrigerators, according to Mohan. In northern India, people prefer smooth, soft colors like silver. But in the south, dark colors do best, like wine red or green. In the east, more traditional colors are most popular. Pebble blue is liked around the country. Reds and fanciful colors are popular in general around India, so Mohan and Samsung tried unusual hues like rich yellow and light green, generating plenty of attention for the unconventional choices and further developing the market by experimenting with new possibilities.

Samsung was also a pioneer with patterns, offering colorful floral patterns on refrigerators since 2006. “Flower patterns, like on a woman’s sari, are appreciated on the refrigerator doors,” he said. And while other types of patterns have been tried, none have found the popularity of flowers. “We will keep trying to offer special designs that nobody else is.”

One of the biggest challenges consumers face around the region is irregular power supplies. To help consumers protect their food from spoiling when the power goes out, Samsung developed the Cool Pack for freezers, which at first were good for just an hour, but eventually improved to keep the freezer cold for 12 hours.

Understanding these needs and interests took countless hours of research, but Mohan saw how they are all important parts of localization. “India is a market that is still full of potential,” he said. “And localization is crucial to this market.”

Always on the Front Lines

Another difference around the region is how people use their refrigerators. In Bangladesh, where meat is a bigger part of the diet, larger freezers are necessary. But in much of India, people eat less meat, don’t eat ice cream or use ice often and prefer room temperature water. In visiting one home, Mohan noticed that the freezer was actually empty.

“The marketing team is always on the front lines…”

This simple observation soon led to another unique local feature. Mohan was dispatched to the local team for three months, and together they came up with a refrigerator that had what they termed a “Convertible” function. The top section of the refrigerator could be used to store frozen items or converted into a cooling area like the main compartment for keeping foods fresh.

It was an idea they developed in 2012, but even good ideas have to wait until the time is right to be implemented. Back then, the Convertible function was too expensive to support, however, the Samsung team has determined the market is ready now, so this new feature is giving consumers around the region a useful new option to suit their lifestyles with an affordable technology.

“The marketing team is always on the front lines in the market,” Mohan said. “As a product manager, I have to care for the product from birth to death. I have to ensure the right product will be available at the right time. The most important and difficult thing to find is ‘What is the right product and the right time?’”

Every Day Is a New Challenge

“I’m active. I hate routine jobs,” he said. “And one of the best things at Samsung, when you come in the morning, you don’t know how your day will end. I like the dynamism. Every day is a new challenge, a new task, meeting new people.”

“It’s up to me to be the initiator. I like that kind of empowerment.”

Since starting his career at Samsung, he credits the words of his mentor for his approach to work: “Be good and be seen.” “If you do good work, but nobody knows it, it doesn’t matter. But if you do bad work and everybody knows it, you’ll get fired. And if you don’t do good work and nobody knows, then you need a new job,” he said with a laugh.

For Mohan, the work and travel as a Product Manager is challenging, but he says he likes the energy of his job. “At Samsung, it’s up to me to be the initiator. I like that kind of empowerment.”

What’s Next?

The job of improving products is never done. Spending so much time with refrigerators has also helped re-inspire his own love for cooking, which in turn has helped him understand his product better. “With such a long connection with refrigerators, I know what to store where, for the best effect,” he said. “As a chef at home, I am really sensitive to how my refrigerator works, and it gives me many ideas to improve them and make them more user-friendly.”

Mohan said that cooking also helps him bond with his teammates and others, noting that his mushroom curry, fried rice and bhujia potato wedges are particularly popular.

“The IoT is going to change everything.”

But what really excited Mohan is the Internet of Things, which is coming to home appliances, including refrigerators. “For the last 100 years, home appliances haven’t changed that much,” he said. “You have cooling machines and heating machines and cleaning machines. But the IoT is going to change everything. What you’ve seen so far, it’s really just the beginning. Trust me, the changes in the next five years are going to be amazing.”

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, held its first Samsung Image Sensor Forum 2015 in New Delhi, India, showcasing its latest image sensor products and technologies, The forum was attended by over 150 experts including partners and customers within the mobile imaging industry, including smartphone manufacturers and partners.

Promoting the theme, “Bring Alive Every Moment,” Samsung shared its vision to provide differentiated value amidst the fast evolving trends in smartphone camera use-cases, and strategy in addressing demands pertaining to the India’s image sensor market.

“Samsung has been constantly introducing innovative image sensor technologies to deliver optimum performance on today’s ever-slimming smart mobile devices,” said Kyushik Hong, Vice President of Marketing, System LSI Business at Samsung Electronics. “Gathering with industry leaders in India opens the door to further engagement and facilitates ongoing communication with ecosystem partners in supporting image sensor demands in India.”

At this year’s inaugural event, Samsung demonstrated its latest mobile image sensor technologies including the smallest 1.0μm-pixel sensor, RWB (Red-White-Blue) color pattern technology, and PDAF (Phase Detection Auto-Focus), which will further strengthen the company’s product portfolio in well performing and rapidly emerging India mobile market.

The 1.0μm pixel-based image sensor adopts Samsung’s proprietary ISOCELL technology, which reduces crosstalk between neighboring pixels, and delivers superb color fidelity even with such minuscule pixels.

The RWB color pattern is a solution that delivers sharper images in low-light settings, such as indoors, by enhancing light sensitivity and color fidelity. RWB refers to a configuration of color pattern filters that places pixels in the order of Red-White-Blue, and uses white color pixels instead of the typical green RGB patterns.

Another advanced feature is the PDAF solution that enables much faster focusing in image sensors. Utilizing the technology, an image sensor can quickly detect phase differences of perceived light, whereas conventional solutions need to constantly compare the subject’s contrast levels.

Based on its solid image sensor technology portfolio and business experiences proven by the global mobile market, Samsung plans to provide a diversity of image sensor solutions with strong performance and differentiated value to India’s mobile market, that will help catalyze the growth of the country’s mobile industry.

Tizen Developer Summit (TDS) is being held in Bengaluru, India between July 30-31, 2015.

TDS is an annual global event sponsored by Samsung Electronics and Tizen Association to assist local app and platform developers interested in contributing to the growth of the Tizen ecosystem. TDS has also attracted companies and organizations such as InMobi, Unity, Airtel and Nasscom.

TDS offers an excellent opportunity to learn from core Tizen developers and understand the technology behind the Tizen platform, app development, porting, and monetization through the Tizen Store. The two-day event consists of keynote speeches, technical sessions and workshops for app developers, platform designers, and Independent Software Vendors (ISV) to understand the technology in the Tizen platform. Multiple discussions and knowledge sharing sessions are being held to educate, engage and excite existing and potential developers.

“TDS 2015 Bengaluru is significant as nearly half of the apps in the Tizen Store are created by developers from India. This reflects the enormous opportunity in India where a large base of platform and app developers continues to show significant interest to develop Tizen OS and high-quality apps,” said Dr. Aloknath De, Chief Technology Officer and VP-Samsung R&D Institute India Bangalore.

“This is also the first Summit which is being organized in the backdrop of commercially available products, for example, the Samsung Z1 smart phone, which sold over one million units since its launch and Tizen Operating System powered SUHD TV which was recently launched in India.” Dr. Aloknath De added.

The keynote speeches was delivered by Dr. Aloknath De on Tizen platform upgrade features, the need for open platforms, current Tizen devices and the new opportunities in the Internet of Things (IoT) space. Ajay Kumar, Joint Secretary of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, addressed the audience on the ‘Digital India’ initiative and how open source is playing a crucial role in e-governance, entrepreneurship and transforming India into a knowledge economy.

Other keynote speakers included Naveen Tewari, CEO of InMobi, who spoke on the evolution of mobile monetization from banners to native advertising to more advanced feature advertising and its impact on Tizen developers. Sanjeev Kashyap, CTO and Head of Satellite Network Group at Airtel, spoked about the growth and change in Indian DTV viewership patterns, the unique application demands of Samsung Smart TV and plans for upcoming applications on the Tizen platform.

New Software Development Kits released:

New Software Development Kits, Tizen 2.3.1 and Tizen 2.4 beta were announced at TDS. The new SDK, Tizen 2.3.1 can be integrated with Wearables allowing developers to build new kinds of Wearable apps ready for commercial distribution. It also supports native app development making all applications lightweight. Tizen 2.4 beta includes Dynamic Animation Library (DALi) for full 3D applications be built. It promises high performance, low power, and memory consumption. Cloudbox enables users to get more content from several Cloud systems. While Contextual Triggers help to customize Tizen functions based on users behavior.

The Tizen OS offers application capability across mobile devices, wearables, TVs, and other home appliances, and this potentially paves the way for incredible convergence opportunities across device categories. TDS offers unique and innovative solutions for a wide range of content creators and it is the best way to interact with local developers and companies working within the Tizen ecosystem.

It was also announced that the next Tizen Developer Conference (TDC) will be held September 17-18, 2015 in Shenzhen, China. TDC is an annual event for open source and app developers who are interested in contributing to the growth of the Tizen ecosystem worldwide.

Tizen is open source and provides an excellent experience for both native and HTML5 application developers. For additional details about the conference and sessions, please visit http://tizendevsummit.com/index.html
