Smart Food Management That Goes Beyond Food Storage

A main attraction of the zone was the 2024 BESPOKE 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+¹ — which impressed visitors with its unique capabilities such as the AI Vision Inside feature. Attendees were able to peek inside and learn about the product’s internal cameras — which record when ingredients are stored and their expiration date. If a product is nearing the end of its shelf life, AI Vision Inside sends notifications to users and provides recipe suggestions via Samsung Food.

Many visitors expressed their desire to lower the amount of food wasted and admitted to forgetting items in the fridge from time to time. “I like the concept and the setup,” said one guest. “It’s pretty useful because I always find expired vegetables in my fridge.”

Effortless Multitasking Around the Home With Connected Appliances

Attendees viewed demonstrations of the interconnectivity of appliances and devices, helping to take the stress out of multitasking and making life easier. For example, if the phone rings while users are cooking, they can answer the call from the screen of the Anywhere Induction Cooktop without needing to grab their smartphone.

Additionally, if the door rings while a user is doing laundry, a notification is sent to the panel of the BESPOKE AI Washer and Dryer Combo — ensuring they don’t miss any visitors to their home.

The AI-Powered Cleaning Capabilities of BESPOKE

Understanding that users desire appliances that clean both effectively and quickly, Samsung showcased its BESPOKE vacuum cleaner lineup. Visitors tested out the BESPOKE Jet AI on different surface types, such as carpet and hard floors, to experience its intelligent floor sensing capabilities. Attendees learned about the BESPOKE Jet Bot AI Combo — which features steam cleaning functionality and upgraded AI Object Recognition to provide a smarter, more hands-off cleaning experience.

Taking the Hassle Out of Household Tasks

Joining Samsung’s line of intelligent appliances, the BESPOKE AI Washer and Dryer Combo offered visitors a glimpse at an All-in-One laundry experience. Attendees were introduced to a number of the space-friendly appliance’s useful features, including AI OptiWash and AI Optimal Dry which use sensors to effectively launder clothes.

Samsung introduced the new Anyplace Induction Cooktop which utilizes an industry-first sheet coil heating mechanism to evenly cook food no matter where the pot or pan is located on the cooktop. The AI Cook Manager technology feature detects boiling liquid and automatically adjusts settings to prevent spillover and messes.

In addition, Samsung showcased how appliances such as the Anyplace Induction Cooktop, Slide-in Range and BESPOKE Oven² can cook dishes properly and safely with limited intervention — providing users with peace of mind when briefly leaving the room while cooking. Once cooking is complete, the appliance automatically sends a notification to the TV or washing machine.³

On top of the unique AI Vision Inside feature, the 32-inch screen of the 2024 BESPOKE 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+ caught the attention of many visitors. Attendees viewed demonstrations of how the expanded screen can be used to pull up all types of content, from step-by-step cooking videos on YouTube or TikTok to their favorite show on Samsung TV Plus. What’s more, visitors learned how they can quickly and conveniently search up recipe videos using voice commands with Bixby.

Enjoy Effortless Energy Savings Using AI

When it comes to sustainability, even the smallest of efforts can make a big difference. Samsung spotlighted AI Energy Mode and how this unique function makes energy saving effortless. Attendees gained insights into how the function monitors energy usage by analyzing peak and off-peak electricity times. As such, AI Energy Mode can automatically power on appliances to perform specific tasks such as running a wash cycle, charging an appliance and more outside of peak usage times.⁴

AI Features That Enable Food Ideas and Intelligence

To enhance the experience in the kitchen, the 2024 Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+ has been packed with a variety of innovative technologies. One impressive new feature is AI Vision Inside, which uses a smart internal camera that can recognize items being placed in and out of the refrigerator. Also, it is equipped with “Vision AI” technology, which can identify up to 33 different fresh food items based on a predefined set of training data comprising approximately one million food photographs.² With the food list that is available and editable on the Family Hub+ screen, users can also manually add expiration date information for items that they would like to keep track and the refrigerator sends out alerts through its 32” LCD screen for items before reaching that date.

Also, with the assistance of the Fridge Manager feature, which monitors the status of the water filter in the refrigerator and alerts when a replacement is needed, the Family Hub+ screen offers easy, one-click purchase of new water filters from Amazon.³

Appliance screen functionality does not stop there. Samsung’s new Anyplace Induction Cooktop and Slide-in Range are each equipped with a 7” LCD screen, where users can view the recipes that were selected and saved from the Family Hub+ to assist their meal preparation. The new Anyplace Induction also offers improvements in its basic cooking features such as efficient and borderless heating of pots and pans on any part of the cooktop, thanks to Samsung’s induction sheet coil technology. And with Anti-Scratch Glass applied instead of a typical ceramic glass, users won’t have to worry about scratching their induction surface when moving cookware.

What’s more, the Samsung Food application — which can now be accessed on the Family Hub+, the Anyplace Induction Cooktop and the Slide-in Range — brings several upgraded AI features. The “Personalize” feature⁴ powered by the enhanced Food AI allows users to adapt recipes to reflect their dietary requirements beyond what was previously available — vegan, fusion — to accommodate gluten-free, pescatarian, dairy-free and other diets. Meanwhile, the new “Image-to-Recipe” feature⁴ with the enhanced Vision AI now recognizes meals and multiple food items from photographs and explores dishes that can be made with those ingredients. Lastly, Tailored Meal Plan analyzes users’ information by connecting to their Samsung Health profiles⁵ to create personalized meals based on their health needs.

AI-Powered Connected Appliances and Features for an Enhanced Kitchen Every Day

With the Bespoke 4-Door Flex Refrigerator with AI Family Hub+ as the centerpiece, the food ecosystem is all about how the AI features in these kitchen products and the Samsung Food service connect and support each other, enabling users to have a better relationship with their food throughout the day and delivering a full range of smart, connected kitchen experiences.

Samsung Food also connects with and ties in Samsung Health⁶ to benefit the lives of users. The service uses health information collected from Samsung Health to suggest healthy, appropriate recipes. After that, users can send cooking instructions for these recipes to their various kitchen appliances with just a few key presses.

Then there is Tap View,⁷ which offers enhanced convenience by allowing users to easily mirror the display of their Galaxy smartphones to the Family Hub+ screen. Furthermore, users can also enjoy videos from the YouTube application right from the refrigerator screen for more information and entertainment.

Understanding evolving user needs and preferences, Samsung Electronics’ Bespoke product line boasts advanced features and sleek, timeless designs perfect for various home interiors — from contemporary apartments to “hanoks,” or traditional Korean-style houses. To showcase the versatility of Bespoke appliances, Samsung collaborated with Superposition, an art furniture design group, to unveil an innovative exhibit at the Hanok Gallery Jiwooheon in Seoul that reimagined the modern home.

Samsung Newsroom sat down with Euna Oh, Chief CMF¹ Designer of Kitchen at Samsung Electronics, Ahjung Joo, CMF Designer of Kitchen at Samsung Electronics, and Superposition team members Jeong-Seon Seo, Sun-Kwang Seo and Jong-Min Kim to learn how the “Timeless” exhibit seamlessly blended the past and present.

High-End Interior Designs for the Home

The Bespoke Infinite Line (Infinite Line), Samsung’s premium line of appliances, was the center of the exhibition. To create a product lineup that was physically and aesthetically fit for modern kitchens, the company carefully selected high-quality, long-lasting materials and developed a unique CMF that utilizes aluminum and ceramic finishes. As this CMF contains recycled materials, Samsung built a collection of home appliances that is luxurious, visually distinct and eco-conscious — recognizing that modern interior design and high-end kitchen concepts incorporate elements from nature.

“Consumer preferences for home and kitchen interiors shifted quite drastically during the pandemic, as people were spending more time at home,” said Chief CMF Designer of Kitchen Euna Oh. “The Infinite Line was released when demand for premium appliances was quite high.”

“Our timeless metal finishes do not lose their value or beauty over time and we ensured this by working diligently during the development process, which began in 2019. We also conducted a thorough review process to ensure the products could be mass produced,” stated CMF Designer of Kitchen Ahjung Joo. “Cutting refrigerator-sized panels of aluminum using CNC² processing was almost unprecedented in the home appliance industry. Given its durability and resistance to scratches and dents, aluminum became the ideal material for the Infinite Line.”

Visual Impact Through Practicality and Usability

A highlight of the exhibit was the special collaborative artwork by Superposition that seamlessly blended with the Infinite Line. Using traditional Korean objects such as “byungpoong” and “duiju,” Superposition furniture designer Jeong-Seon Seo transformed refrigerators and dishwashers into artistic pieces resembling furniture rather than individual appliances. “When conceptualizing the exhibit, we wanted to focus on the long-lasting value and usability of the Infinite Line,” he said.

One of the eye-catching pieces in the exhibit was “Sea” — an 11-panel screen depicting pristine white sand that resembled Cera White, the Infinite Line finish made of ceramic. The screen incorporated a refrigerator, freezer and kimchi refrigerator and connected them using eight digitally drawn illustrations, blurring the lines between art and technology.

“When I first saw the Bespoke Infinite Line refrigerator, I was immediately reminded of a white, sandy beach,” said Superposition graphic designer Jong-Min Kim. “The Cera White finish of the Infinite Line refrigerator was designed to resemble organic textures inspired by nature. I wanted to mirror Samsung’s aesthetic, so I used acrylic to emulate waves crashing on a beach. When you look at the five overlapping acrylics in the piece, you can almost feel the waves.”

In addition, the exhibition showcased modern kitchen appliances, such as induction ranges and refrigerators, integrated with “duiju,” traditional Korean furniture used to store food. These pieces were “Island,” a kitchen island unit combining an Infinite Line induction range and dishwasher, and “Ham,” a built-in featuring an Infinite Line refrigerator and wine cooler. The exhibits juxtaposed the beauty of traditional furniture with the cutting-edge technology of the Infinite Line to display a new take on contemporary kitchen environments and home aesthetics.

Evoking Timelessness in the Modern Era

Samsung and Superposition share a similar pursuit when innovating — instilling timelessness into products by combining classic and modern design elements.

“For the Infinite Line, we reinterpreted vertical design elements that were used in ancient Greek architectural columns,” said Joo. “We also utilized materials that resemble the textures of soil and stone. The Infinite Line’s simple design and refined appearance evoke an organic look and feel that is ideal for high-end kitchens.”

“The Infinite Line combines natural textures and materials with modern functionality. This is similar to how Superposition reinterprets Korean artwork using digital art and acrylics,” said Kim. “This collaboration was intriguing because Samsung and Superposition follow different design principles, yet their products feel very similar to one another.”

Blending Modernity and Tradition Within the Home

The exhibition beautifully showcased the concept of timelessness by exploring the intersection of nature and technology as well as the harmony between tradition and modernity. Throughout the project’s development, Samsung and Superposition discovered similarities with one another — making this artistic endeavor more meaningful.

“Because the Infinite Line’s design philosophy perfectly aligned with our vision, this collaboration was enjoyable,” said Superposition marketing manager Sun-Kwang Seo. “We are honored to have worked with Samsung and are thrilled to have created this exhibition in partnership.”

Oh discussed how the exhibit redefined the boundaries of art. “Previously, I had mostly seen the Infinite Line in modern interior spaces,” she said. “Viewing the Infinite Line in a hanok was quite an interesting sight and something I had never imagined. Our collaboration with Superposition delivered a new take on art.”

Drawing inspiration from historical architecture and art, the Infinite Line blends the ingenuity of modern and classic designs with the practical functionality users desire. As a result, Samsung has been able to create a distinct line of high-end appliances ideal for any luxury kitchen.

Through this collaboration, Samsung and Superposition demonstrated that modernity and tradition can harmoniously coexist side-by-side within any home.

This innovative product attracted the attention of many visitors for its ability to seamlessly handle both washing and drying functions within a single machine — all while improving space efficiency in compact laundry rooms. Powering this appliance’s capabilities is none other than “Core Tech,” a philosophy that underscores Samsung’s home appliances.

Introduced at this year’s IFA, the Core Tech concept reveals the vision behind Samsung’s home appliances as well as what drives the company to consistently push the boundaries of innovation. Through this three-part series, Samsung Newsroom will dive into the essence of Core Tech, showcasing its diverse applications in Samsung’s home appliances.

Inside Samsung Home Appliances: Core Tech

“When we first kicked off with developing the Bespoke AI Washer & Dryer Combo, we weren’t seeking opportunities for moderate changes. We were aiming to create something completely different,” said Moohyung Lee, EVP and Head of R&D Team of Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics. “I focused on securing enough time and freedom for our engineers to explore. Driven by the Core Tech philosophy, they ultimately developed a product that exceeded expectations.”

Core Tech is comprised of four key themes — “Outstanding,” indicating Samsung’s unique or first-introduced features; “AI-Powered,” representing the use of artificial intelligence and the pursuit of automation to reduce the need for user action; “Flexible Use,” enabling customization for diverse lifestyles; and “Durable & Sustainable,” emphasizing both product and environmental sustainability. Breaking Down Core Tech Themes: Innovations in Home Appliances

Outstanding signifies the technologies unique to Samsung’s home appliances branded with patents and the company’s commitment to enhancing consumer lifestyles. Notable technologies in this category include AI Ecobubble which optimizes laundry performance with bubbles to help detergents better penetrate fabrics; WindFree Cooling which creates a comfortable environment without cold drafts; and Beverage Center inside the fridge which provides quick and easy access to cold drinks.

AI-Powered represents the evolving home appliance products, emphasizing how artificial intelligence and automation can reduce user intervention. This advancement can be especially beneficial for those who have become too familiar with conventional appliances and are unfamiliar with ways to better use them. Samsung’s AI-powered appliances learn usage patterns, provide tailored recommendations and optimize settings automatically — ultimately redefining user convenience.

Flexible Use allows customization of home appliances to meet diverse user preferences, such as region, generation or physical environment. For instance, the FlexZone in the refrigerator allows users to store food, wine and other items properly by adjusting the mode in the designated zone. The Dual Cook Flex Oven expands culinary possibilities by dividing its cavity and door into two, allowing users to prepare multiple dishes at different temperatures.

Lastly, Durable & Sustainable embodies Samsung’s commitment to extend product lifespan and enable users to make eco-conscious decisions. It is crucial for home appliances since they are used for extended periods and continuously plugged in. This category contains technologies such as the Digital Inverter Compressor and Motor that help save energy and the Less Microfiber Cycle, which is a result from working together with Patagonia, to reduce microplastic emissions during wash cycles.

Executive Vice President Lee emphasized the interconnectedness of these themes: “These four themes are not mutually exclusive but rather complementary.” For instance, the Less Microfiber Filter for washers can be installed in a choice of ways² flexibly (Flexible Use), but considers the product’s environmental impact (Durable & Sustainable). “Ultimately, the goal is to provide unique solutions — even for problems consumers may not yet recognize — by digging deeper and observing the demands of our users,” he added.

Core Tech not only embodies the cutting-edge technologies in the home appliances market but also looks forward to the future. Samsung has consistently offered distinctive solutions through careful evaluation of the value its products bring to consumers. At-Home Life Made Easy With Smart Home Appliances

Household chores can be annoying for anyone — even for a football star like Son. With this in mind, Samsung has optimized its home appliances to make cleaning a breeze, allowing consumers to spend less time tidying and more time relaxing.

Before going on a grocery run or preparing a meal, Samsung’s View Inside¹ feature allows users to plan ahead by checking what’s inside their fridge via the Family Hub screen or remotely through the SmartThings app.² On laundry day, Bespoke AI Washers offer AI Wash Cycle — a smart feature that actively detects load weight, soil level, fabric softness and other factors for perfectly clean clothes every time.³

Additionally, Son demonstrates how easy it is to vacuum with the Bespoke Jet AI, equipped with AI Cleaning Mode that provides powerful, optimized cleaning based on cleaning environments,⁴ floor type, for example.

Smart Energy Savings With AI Energy Mode

As more people prioritize an eco-conscious lifestyle, consumers are seeking new ways to be conscious of their environmental impact and reduce their carbon footprint. Through SmartThings, users like Son can easily reduce their energy consumption and monitor their homes’ energy usage in real time.

AI Energy Mode⁵ in SmartThings Energy is a power-saving feature that maximizes energy efficiency when used with select products and cycles such as the Bespoke AI Washer and Dryer, Bespoke refrigerator and WindFree air conditioner — with up to 70%,⁶ 20%,⁷ 15%⁸ and 20%⁹ energy savings in Europe, respectively.¹⁰

Routines To Match Everyday Life

Users can control their home environments using SmartThings Routines before heading out. With the SmartThings Routines feature, they can preset appliances to be automatically turned on or off during specific times of the day or when certain conditions are met. Son shows how SmartThings switches off the lights and appliances and automatically turns on the Bespoke Jet Bot AI+ robot vacuum cleaner when he leaves to go out.

Samsung Electronics today announced the launch of Samsung Food, a personalized, AI-powered food and recipe platform.

Releasing in eight languages¹ in 104 countries around the world, Samsung Food will offer comprehensive food experiences through more than 160,000 available recipes, acting as a personalized assistant that helps users discover new dishes, create tailored meal plans and order ingredients online. The service will also help users control their cooking appliances, while giving step-by-step guided cooking and allowing users to share their favorite recipes on social media.

Building on the foundation of Samsung’s wide range of cooking appliances and food services, Samsung Food uses AI technology to go beyond existing capabilities and deliver a food platform that truly adapts to the needs and lifestyles of its users. To accomplish this, Samsung Food draws from the extensive database of Whisk, a smart food platform acquired by Samsung Next in 2019 that leverages advanced technology called Food AI, which suggests meals based on user preferences and food seasonality.

Food Your Way: Recipe Exploration and Personalization, AI-Enhanced Meal Planning, Kitchen Connectivity and Social Sharing

Samsung Food’s wide range of features support users every step of the way during the meal planning and cooking process, spanning four key areas: recipe discovery and personalization, tailored meal planning, connected cooking and social sharing functions.

For recipe discovery, Samsung Food lets users save recipes to their personal digital recipe box anytime and from anywhere. The app analyzes recipes, standardizes their format and organizes them to create shopping lists based on their ingredients. In addition to mobile devices, users can also access the Samsung Food service with their Bespoke Family Hub refrigerators.² Opened from the Family Hub touchscreen, Samsung Food provides recipe recommendations based on a list of available food items managed by the user.³

Samsung Food also comes with a Personalize Recipe function, enabling the app’s Food AI to directly change a saved recipe to better reflect users’ dietary requirements. For example, users can convert a recipe into a vegan or vegetarian version or make other changes to create a recipe that is more nutritionally balanced or incorporates in-stock ingredients. Users will even be able to create fusion recipes, such as Korean versions of Italian dishes, and adjust cook time or skill level of recipes.

To create individualized daily meal plans for users, the app makes AI-created recommendations based on user data,⁴ dietary preferences and favorite cuisine types and lets users add them to their meal planner. Nutritional breakdowns of ingredients are available at any time, and users can add items to their Samsung Food shopping list then send it straight to a retailer’s e-commerce checkout.⁵

With connected cooking, seamless Samsung Food connectivity lets users set timers, preheat ovens⁶ and send recipes’ cook settings straight to appliances⁷ through step-by-step guided cooking modes, all from their portable devices. Starting with the Bespoke Oven, Samsung plans to connect numerous appliances — including Bespoke induction ranges and Bespoke microwaves — to Samsung Food by the end of the year to expand convenience for users in the kitchen.

It’s easy for users to get social with Samsung Food by sharing their favorite dishes with the community, creating and publishing their own recipes and following their favorite food content creators.

From Samsung Health Incorporation to Vision AI: Upcoming Features for Samsung Food

Beyond Samsung Food capabilities available at launch, Samsung will continue adding new features and services to the app for an even more seamless and comprehensive personal food experience.

By the end of the year, Samsung plans to offer Samsung Health integration with Samsung Food so that users will be able to receive suggestions for diet management. The seamless syncing of information such as BMI, body composition and calorie consumption with Samsung Food will help users to hit health goals and maintain a balanced diet.

Planned for implementation in 2024, Vision AI technology will enable Samsung Food to recognize food items and meals photographed through the camera and provide details about them, including nutrition information. By analyzing food items, the app can recommend the best recipes to use them with, save these recipes to the user’s collection and add the required ingredients to a shopping list, all in a few taps.

Its simple and flat BESPOKE design blends harmoniously with the home’s interior space as well as any other appliances and pieces of furniture.

Making Your Washing Easier

The features of the model and laundry cycles are designed to give users a more holistic and seamless experience. When consumers start the machine, they can control it more intuitively and select the course of washing and drying easily through the Wide LCD display. The display also shows informative reports at the end of the cycle for users’ reference.

With AI Wash,² the BESPOKE AI Washer & Dryer Combo detects the weight, softness of the fabric³ in each load and the ongoing level of soiling based on the water turbidity to optimize the amount of water and detergent. Using this information it continually adjusts the soaking, rinsing and spinning time to achieve the best results quickly and efficiently.

Operating Automatic and Smart Functions

Samsung applies its advanced technologies to help users manage their machine efficiently. Once the cycle is completed, the door automatically opens so users can take out the laundry with less effort. It also lets out humid air and heat while bringing fresh air into the drum. The machine comes with Heat Exchanger Auto Cleaning System which effectively preserves the quality of the drying. It also supports AI Energy Mode in SmartThings Energy,⁴ offering smart energy savings.

Recognizing this white space, Samsung recently introduced Bespoke Jet AI, the world’s first UL-verified AI cordless stick vacuum cleaner.¹ This pioneering innovation expands the convenience of AI-based cleaning technology to more consumers.

Samsung Newsroom sat down with Shin Kim, Vice President and Head of VC R&D at Samsung Electronics, and R&D team members Jaeyoon Jeong and Thomas Choi to learn more about the development of Bespoke Jet AI as well as Samsung’s belief in the transformative potential of AI in enhancing user convenience.

Q, What was behind the decision to add AI functionality to a cordless vacuum cleaner?

Kim: When developing Bespoke Jet AI, we were set on addressing two of the most common pain points for consumers within the cordless stick vacuum market. First, customers wish they could use their cordless vacuums for longer and second, they desire a cordless vacuum capable of handling any surface type.

During the development process, we realized that a hardware update alone would not be enough to address both concerns. Instead, we turned toward implementing AI technology into our product to accomplish these goals.

The resulting design for Bespoke Jet AI features not only hardware upgrades, such as the HexaJet Motor with improved efficiency but also software upgrades that allow the vacuum to operate intelligently according to its environment. And thus, Bespoke Jet AI was created.

Q. Samsung introduced Bespoke Jet AI as the world’s first UL-verified cordless stick vacuum cleaner. What does this certification mean, and what is the significance of it?

Jeong: The UL (Underwriters Laboratories) Solutions is a widely recognized, independent safety science organization that conducts product safety testing and then issues certifications accordingly. UL’s certification process employs rigorous screening procedures to verify that the implemented AI technology is legitimate and provides consumers with the promised benefits. We are very happy to have received UL verification for Bespoke Jet AI.

Q. Considering Bespoke Jet AI is the first UL-verified cordless stick vacuum cleaner, there must have been challenges during its development. What was the biggest obstacle, and how did you overcome it?

Choi: From an algorithm development perspective, the biggest challenge we faced when developing the AI mode for Bespoke Jet AI was not the product specifications. Rather, the biggest obstacle was making sure that consumers felt the AI mode was performing as expected. To accomplish this, we had to ensure that the AI mode was properly recognizing cleaning surfaces and adjusting itself accordingly.

Kim: Part of overcoming this challenge was to gather extensive data on diverse floor types and cleaning environments. We tested a wide variety of commercially available carpet and rug materials that we consider the standard and all available floor-type samples to assess if the AI mode could reliably and accurately identify them.

We also needed to properly categorize the data into certain types of cleaning environments before combining the accumulated data with SVM methods² so that AI mode could properly distinguish different cleaning environments.³

Q. Across different countries, what are the market differences that affect how Bespoke Jet AI is received by consumers? Are there any design aspects that have been modified for the global market?

Kim: We made major changes to the main brush type for the global launch of Bespoke Jet AI. While the Korean model features a soft roller main brush, we implemented a carpet-specific multi-brush, the Active Dual Brush, for the global version.⁴

The reason for this modification was the difference in household floors across the world. According to our market research, a low percentage of homes in Korea have carpets and rugs. On the other hand, about 24% of homes in the global market have carpets and rugs, particularly in living rooms and bedrooms. To cater to this difference, we designed the global version of Bespoke Jet AI with the Active Dual Brush as the default brush type since its stiff nylon and rubber bristles can more effectively remove dust⁵ embedded in carpets and rug flooring.

Q. What other improvements does Bespoke Jet AI feature compared to similar Bespoke Jet models?

Jeong & Choi: The major improvements that we would like to highlight are the vacuum’s suction and runtime performance.

Bespoke Jet AI features our most powerful suction⁶ and the longest battery life of our vacuums to date, providing up to 280W of suction power⁷ with a runtime of up to 100 minutes when fully charged.⁸ Compared to the previous model, that’s a 27% improvement in suction power.⁹

And you can imagine, of course, through AI cleaning mode, it’s possible to deliver the same performance as Mid mode while saving 14% battery power.¹⁰

Q. More broadly speaking, how does the launch of Bespoke Jet AI fit within Samsung’s vision for vacuum cleaners?

Kim: With the launch of Bespoke Jet AI, I feel that we have entered a new era. I am curious and excited to see what is next for us as we take on even greater challenges and turn what might have been impossible in the past into the achievements of tomorrow.

We will keep pursuing new consumer experience by applying the latest technologies such as AI and connectivity — of course not only in vacuum cleaner business, but also in other categories that Samsung Digital Appliances is dealing with. We hope that our customers are just as excited as we are about the innovations we are set to introduce in the near future.

Samsung and TOILETPAPER, the creative studio founded in 2010 by renowned Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan and photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari, introduced four new limited-edition Bespoke refrigerator door panels. TOILETPAPER’s distinct and eye-catching style has been seamlessly incorporated into these new designs, highlighting the studio’s characteristic playful and surreal aesthetics. This collaboration offers consumers exciting opportunities to personalize their kitchens and pushes the boundaries of what’s possible within the Bespoke style.

To discuss the inspiration behind the collaboration, Samsung Newsroom spoke with the founders of TOILETPAPER, Micol Talso, Creative Director and Project Lead at TOILETPAPER, and Jidam Hong, Head of Bespoke’s Aesthetic Intelligence Design Group at Samsung.

Q. What were your initial thoughts about Samsung and TOILETPAPER’s collaboration on the new Bespoke panels? Were there any similarities in approach that stood out?

TOILETPAPER founders: TOILETPAPER and Samsung are both trying to break away from limitations, challenge norms and showcase a wide range of possibilities. TOILETPAPER does this through surreal images, disrupting existing design conventions to help people see how interesting familiar, everyday objects can be. Samsung Bespoke achieves this goal by handing over more control to the people using its appliances through personalization and customization options, which is an exciting approach for appliance designers. This common vision made us a good match. Everything can be a canvas for our images, so why not appliances? Our designs don’t necessarily have to live in magazines and inside design studios – now, they can exist in the kitchen too.

Hong: Personalization was always a crucial part of our philosophy at Bespoke, and we were already well aware of TOILETPAPER’s colorful, evocative work. The studio’s designs have a striking but approachable feel, which is particularly popular with Millennial and Gen Z users. We felt that collaborating with TOILETPAPER would be an excellent next step forward in Bespoke’s personalization journey. Applying the eye-catching designs to our Bespoke refrigerators was an enriching creative experience, and we hope to use this work as a jumping-off point to expand into new designs in the future.

Q. As Creative Director and Head of Design, respectively, you must both have a wealth of experience leading various projects. Which of these has had the most lasting impact on you?

Talso: Since we first started TOILETPAPER, each project has been unique and exciting. Maybe that’s why I’m still here — the sense of surprise, the change, throwing oneself into new experiences and exploring unknown territories. It’s the lack of repetitiveness in TOILETPAPER’s creative process that attracts me most to it, thanks to our studio leaders Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari. They’ve always had the curiosity and courage to go further, whether it’s shifting from a magazine to a fashion brand or developing interactive exhibitions and designing everyday objects. Usually, when something works well, there is a temptation not to change it. But at TOILETPAPER, we have continued to evolve by being open to unusual collaborations, such as this latest one with Bespoke.

Hong: We have covered the Color, Material and Finish — or “CMF” — of a wide range of kitchen and home products, and each project has been an opportunity to learn and grow. We have been designing the CMF of home appliances: working with new shades and textures; staying on top of design trends; and learning how to push these trends further. This collaboration with TOILETPAPER was particularly interesting because the studio’s aesthetic has wholly different origins from the functional perspective that home appliance designs typically come from.

Q. What does Samsung’s design vision of True Customization have in common with TOILETPAPER?

Hong: Samsung’s vision of True Customization is about embracing creativity and uniqueness that lets us truly express ourselves as individuals. We want our appliances to be subtle when they need to be – sometimes customers need a product to blend in with and accentuate the existing style of their kitchens – but we also want our customers to be able to “go big” if they want to. TOILETPAPER’s work perfectly encapsulates this goal with striking images that make a statement. Just as TOILETPAPER is about making the mundane remarkable, Samsung believes Bespoke’s vision of True Customization is about breaking down design boundaries and showcasing what’s possible when you unleash your imagination.

TOILETPAPER founders: We think that both Samsung and TOILETPAPER work towards spreading creativity that speaks universally across cultures. By finding fresh new ways to present bold colors and exploring different mediums, our work can have a meaningful impact on people around the world. Ultimately, we think TOILETPAPER and Samsung Bespoke’s vision is to showcase extraordinary things in even the ordinary parts of life.

Q. TOILETPAPER has collaborated with various brands, from Nike, Armani and Kenzo to Mercedes Benz, Audi and BMW. How was this project with Samsung Bespoke different from previous collaborations?

Talso: The partnership with Samsung, the first home appliance brand we ever collaborated with, was certainly unique and memorable — and that’s exactly what we liked about it. We have collaborated with fashion, design and beauty brands, but the thought of working with a technology brand in the world of home appliances had never occurred to us. We thought it was an amazing opportunity to challenge ourselves with a new medium. It’s very liberating when you collaborate with a client and feel the possibilities are endless.

Q. What message would you like this limited-edition TOILETPAPER collection to convey to people?

Talso: Both Samsung and TOILETPAPER have embraced the desire to encourage self-expression and personal style through customization: Samsung with its transformative product design and the customizable Bespoke panels and TOILETPAPER with our bold, colorful and flamboyant images that can speak to a cross-generational audience. I think that technology and art work very well together — the first speaks more to the brain, the second to the heart.

Hong: Samsung has enjoyed many collaborations and held several contests that showcase the depth and breadth of Bespoke design, but these new designs by TOILETPAPER are taking our style to exciting new levels. The Bespoke lineup mostly employs a smooth, minimalist look that helps it harmonize with any décor, and our work with TOILETPAPER shows that this minimalism can also act as a blank canvas. Bespoke’s TOILETPAPER panels are bold, vivid and playful. They bring a whole standard of artistic expression to our appliances, and we hope they will let people completely reimagine the aesthetic potential of the objects that surround them every day.

Samsung Electronics today announced the upcoming global launch of the Samsung Bespoke Jet AI, the company’s most powerful cordless stick vacuum yet with up to 280W¹ of suction power, a self-emptying enhanced All-in-One Clean Station and artificial intelligence (AI)-based functionality. The Bespoke Jet AI will be available globally from June in markets including Australia, Europe² and the U.S., with preorders starting today.

Featuring a 250W and 280W model,³ the Bespoke Jet AI is available in two timeless Bespoke colors: Satin Black and Satin Greige.⁴

Samsung’s Most Powerful and Longest-Running Cordless Stick Vacuum Yet

The Bespoke Jet AI features the powerful HexaJet Motor which, with up to 280W of suction power and a maximum consumption power of 730W, makes it Samsung’s most powerful vacuum motor to date. This ultra lightweight motor, weighing in at only 150g, provides a comfortable cleaning experience while still providing a 25% increase in suction power compared to the previous model,⁵ as well as a motor efficiency of 52%.

In order to allow users to clean for longer without stopping to charge, the Bespoke Jet AI offers up to 100 minutes of usage, the longest single battery runtime of any Samsung cordless stick vacuum. Its 4,500mAh battery features 80% more capacity than the previous model and has been optimized to retain 70% of its performance for up to 500 cycles.⁶

The Bespoke Jet AI also features a selection of brushes and other accessories. The Active Dual Brush offers efficient cleaning on all types of floors and built-in LED lighting to highlight dust in dark spots, while the Slim LED Brush+ features a highly maneuverable design as well as LED lighting in order to effectively clean trickier areas. For more convenient storage of the device and its brushes, the Accessory Cradle allows users to store their device wherever they want.

AI-Based Cleaning for an Exceptional Intelligent Cleaning Experience

With its all-new AI mode that harnesses Samsung’s AI Optimum Tech, the Bespoke Jet AI provides a more effective cleaning experience while catering to a diverse range of environments. The Bespoke Jet AI is the first cordless stick vacuum cleaner to feature an AI verification from UL Solutions, a leading independent safety science organization. Its AI Cleaning Mode allows it to determine floor type in order to provide both optimized cleaning and maximum battery efficiency.

With AI Cleaning Mode, the Bespoke Jet AI will first detect the brush load it has encountered through its suction motion controller, as well as the air pressure through its pressure sensors. This data will then be analyzed in order to classify the floor type it is placed on, and the resulting algorithm will be automatically applied in order to provide the optimal suction power and brushroll speed.⁷

Why Is Family Hub+ Bigger?

Family Hub+ features a 32-inch full HD touchscreen that is 2.1x bigger than the previous 21.5-inch display. Now, what is the reasoning behind a bigger screen?

Adapting to the New Normal

The pandemic has forced many of us to spend more time at home, leading to a surge in creative ways to utilize our living spaces. The kitchen, for example, has evolved beyond a space for cooking and eating to become a multifunctional hub for family communication, hobbies and other everyday needs. As a result, our relationship with kitchen appliances, such as the fridge, has also changed. The refrigerator is the perfect partner that fits the modern role of the kitchen and has become a platform that provides services we need to align with these new lifestyles. We require more from our appliances than ever before. Bigger screens mean greater attention to detail. For instance, the 32-inch display needed to be accessible to both children and wheelchair users, so the bottom portion of the display was positioned to be mindful of these users’ needs. The top of the display was raised, but the Accessible Screen feature lets users tap the home button twice to bring down the top portion of the screen. The panel surrounding the screen was carefully fitted to make sure the details on the edges were smooth. The mic at the bottom was also moved upwards so that every detail we need to see — or what we don’t — is precisely designed into the form.

How Is Family Hub+ More User-Friendly?

A great amount of thought was put into creating a refrigerator design that could harmonize with its surroundings and other appliances.

Adding Tangible Taste to Every Touch

A wide variety of panel materials are available to choose from, allowing users to design a refrigerator that feels best to their touch. The satin glass is velvety in texture, offering both comfort and glow, while the glam glass brightens any environment with its high gloss surface. Metal embodies Millennial sentiments through a subtle, monotone finish. Panels are easily interchangeable¹ so that a single refrigerator base can support a wide range of styles.

Visual Comfort

Both from the inside and outside, the refrigerator intends to instill a sense of cohesiveness that would be found in a beautiful piece of standalone furniture. The inner mood light² is positioned to put more emphasis on the stored food within. Lighting is spread out evenly through the insides of the refrigerator to give visual comfort and illuminate the innermost parts of the appliance.

A bigger screen means there’s more content to consume, allowing every moment spent with Family Hub+ to be filled with joy.

Seamless Experiences

In today’s busy world, families need a constant source of entertainment and information in the spaces where they gather. That’s why Family Hub+ features a larger display, allowing families to multitask while enjoying their favorite content. With Samsung TV Plus,⁴ one of Samsung’s most popular apps, viewers can now move the screen to the top, middle or bottom of the display to ensure it’s at eye level. The Picture in Picture feature allows users to browse the web or search for recipes while still playing their favorite show or movie in the background.

Samsung’s vision for a sustainable future, one that incorporates sustainability further into everyday life, is clear to visitors throughout the entire “Bespoke Home, Bespoke Life” experience.

The first exhibit, Seungji Mun’s “We Breathe,” places appliances including the Bespoke AI Washer and Dryer and Bespoke BMF¹ Refrigerator into a space composed mainly of recycled materials such as discarded plastic² and fishing nets. The exhibit portrays the appliances as “sleeping” while conserving power to showcase SmartThings’ energy-saving technology.

The “Everyday Sustainability” exhibit focuses on Samsung’s efforts to support sustainability throughout the entire product lifecycle. From manufacturing and distribution to usage and disposal, Samsung continues to drive eco-conscious efforts further across every facet of its operations. This includes reducing resource use and carbon emissions³ during the sourcing stage, developing eco-conscious packaging for distribution, implementing intelligent energy-saving technologies for the usage stage and making it easier for users to recycle their products once they reach the end of their lifecycle.

A Better, Smarter Lifestyle Through Connectivity

In addition to highlighting innovations that cater to consumers’ desire for greater sustainability, Samsung’s booth is also spotlighting SmartThings’ ability to transform the way consumers interact with their appliances — by fostering seamless experiences and bringing calm to their interconnected world.

The “Connected Experience” exhibit features the types of seamless and intuitive experiences that become possible by combining Bespoke appliances’ hyperconnectivity with SmartThings’ automation. Taking this a step further, SmartThings Energy manages energy production and saving of an entire house, enabling the true vision of a “Net Zero Home.” To this end, Samsung is expanding partnerships with European energy companies, such as “SMA Solar Technology” and “Passiv UK.”

The collaborations that Samsung showcased at Fuorisalone 2023 redefine the boundaries of Bespoke design. These partnerships and design enhancements reaffirm Samsung’s commitment to offering consumers the ultimate in personalization.

Hosuk Jang’s “Framed” is an eye-catching exhibit that cleverly blends Bespoke’s design ethos with that of a European social club by incorporating art frames into Bespoke refrigerator panels. Samsung Electronics today revealed the company’s collaborative design work with TOILETPAPER, the creative studio founded by artist Maurizio Cattelan and photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari. Unveiled at Fuorisalone during the 2023 Milan Design Week, the collaboration brings TOILETPAPER’s unique and disruptive art style to limited-edition Samsung Bespoke refrigerator panels.

Central to the Samsung Bespoke philosophy is the aim to push the boundaries of white appliance designs to introduce new modes of personal self-expression through customization. In many ways, TOILETPAPER and Samsung have a similar creative vision, which encourages self-expression and embraces experimental design concepts. For Bespoke design, this comes in the form of personalization and customization, while TOILETPAPER specializes in unconventional, avant-garde art styles that make bold statements about life.

The Bespoke Home Virtual is a 3D home appliance experience in a virtual reality (VR) space using advanced digital twin technology. It allows users to roam around interacting with them to get a feel for how Bespoke appliances would look inside their home in various configurations.

Bespoke Home Virtual, unlike similar interior VR experiences, allows users to freely explore locations as if they were in a video game with a whole new level of freedom. While in the past, VR spaces were limited to certain sections being rendered, the Bespoke Home Virtual uses a new technology that opens the entire space so users can see from all angles without limitations. The Kitchen & Bath Industry Show 2023 attendees got to go hands-on, through a docent service, with Bespoke Home Virtual for a truly immersive experience. Modelled to reflect an average American home, the 3D environment offered consumers an easy and intuitive way to experience Bespoke products and create different moods in the home with customizations. Throughout the event, the whole experience was also simultaneously shared on Samsung’s 4K 140-inch display, The Wall, at the Samsung Booth.

Users first got to select from three distinct interior styles, including Modern, Transitional Light and Transitional Dark, then were free to roam around the fully decorated space. Cycling through three interior designs, users were able to get a deeper understanding of how the appliances would look matched with different textures such as marble backsplashes, wood or stone tile floors and light or dark walls.

More than a simple walkthrough, attendees were encouraged to get up close and experience a catered suite of Bespoke products, including refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines and dryers as well as inductions and ovens. Users were able to open the doors on the units to check out features such as the built-in water dispenser inside the fridge as well as the glide pan in the oven while swapping through vibrant colors and detailed finishes. Together, the realistic interior and exterior renditions allowed users to fully enjoy the amazing features that make Bespoke products truly bespoke.

Samsung Electronics today showcased innovations that raise the bar for sustainable, smart and personalized living at the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Bespoke appliances have quickly grown in popularity since they were introduced to the U.S. market in 2021, with Bespoke refrigerators as the centerpiece. The ever-expanding line now includes full kitchen packages, laundry and floor care products.

This year, Samsung is offering Bespoke customization to the built-in cooking category and also introducing new refrigerator models. The EPA has also awarded Samsung 260 ENERGY STAR® certifications, including 43 “Most Efficient” recognitions.⁸

KBIS attendees can also learn more about the new Less Microfiber Cycle and Filter, the former of which cuts microplastic emissions during laundry by up to 54%.⁹ Now available in Europe, the cycle will roll out to compatible washers in Korea from February this year and in the U.S. soon.

In 2023, Bespoke appliances will deliver more personalized experiences with connectivity to help make daily life more convenient and productive. Bespoke appliances in Singapore are blending whimsical designs to offer customers a unique and playful concept for their homes. In celebration of the widespread love for Disney characters, Samsung introduced its Bespoke Disney Collection in August of this year. The collection features Samsung appliances with designs of some of Disney’s most well-loved characters, giving Singapore consumers the ability to add a touch of childhood wonder and nostalgia to their home’s design.

Celebrating Innovation and Diversity in Indonesia

In celebration of the 77th anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence Day, Samsung teamed up with two Indonesian illustrators, Kathrin Honesta and Rachel Ajeng, to showcase limited-edition designs on the Bespoke refrigerator and AirDresser. Consumers can choose from three designs: “Butterfly Garden” or “Timun Mas” by Kathrin Honesta or “Reimagine Indonesia” by Rachel Ajeng. The designs highlight Indonesia’s ethnic and cultural diversity, allowing Indonesian consumers to enjoy artistic pieces in their homes while also taking pride in their Indonesian roots.

Presenting Unlimited Design Possibilities of Bespoke in South Africa

Samsung’s Bespoke Home Challenge in South Africa will once again take place to showcase the unlimited design possibilities of Bespoke appliances. For two weeks, contestants will build their ideal kitchen and living space. Four finalists have already been selected, and the contest’s winner will be announced early in 2023. The challenge will give a platform to users’ creativity and innovation and allow participants to create their dream home design using the ultra-customizable and sleek Bespoke series.

Also in Korea, Samsung announced the winner of #BESPOKERendezvous, a Bespoke refrigerator design contest. Of the 1,114 works that were submitted, about 28,000 people voted online to select the top ten finalists. Samsung held an onsite #BESPOKERendezvous party and award ceremony where Cho Kyung-min’s water-inspired design, “Floating Rings,” was selected as the final winner.

A New Level of Personalization in the U.S.

With Bespoke, true customization is more than choice — it’s also about self-expression. Within the U.S., Lowe’s and Samsung teamed up to launch a limited-edition collection of panels for Samsung’s Bespoke refrigerator, offering shoppers another way to customize their spaces and express their unique personal styles. The panels, which can be mixed and matched with Samsung Bespoke’s portfolio of panel colors and finishes, are exclusively available at Lowe’s while supplies last.

These panels are designed by three distinctive artists: Alexa Meade, Amber Vittoria and Domonique Brown. Each edition incorporates the artists’ signature styles and distinct points of view, allowing American shoppers to let their own personal styles shine through.

What’s more, Samsung is also launching new MyBespoke panels that will allow consumers in the U.S. to tailor their Bespoke refrigerators to match their daily lives. The panels, which will be introduced to the market soon, allow consumers to display their favorite artwork, family photos, creative design and more on the customizable French doors of the Bespoke refrigerator. To complement the personalized design they select, consumers can also choose from various colors and finishes, allowing them to create a one-of-a-kind refrigerator unique to their home.

Redefining Art and Auctions in Poland

In Poland, a Samsung Bespoke refrigerator with a design from French artist Thibaud Hérem was auctioned off at the DESA Unicum, a leading auction house in the country and the eighth-largest auction house in Europe. The auction included various unusual art objects, including furniture, sculptures and home accessories. For the first time in the country, a Samsung Bespoke refrigerator featuring an image of the Chateau de Fontainebleau, a building of great importance to French art and culture, was awarded to the winning bidder and considered a piece of applied art. The proceeds earned from the refrigerator will be donated to Friends of the National Museum in Warsaw Association to build a new collection for the museum and the “Self-Portraits XXI,” a project that supports contemporary Polish artists.

A Flagship Store Centered Around You in Mexico

The new flagship store is located in the Centro Comercial Perisur, one of the biggest shopping malls in the country, with an average visitor count of 2 million people a month. The store offers a wide range of Bespoke Home appliances, including refrigerators, ovens, washing machines and more, making the store the one-stop shop for users’ home appliance needs. Visitors can also experience Samsung’s SmartThings, allowing them to fully experience an expanded and personalized home via a fully integrated home system.

The Bespoke AI Laundry pair responds to frequent washing habits for a highly personalized experience, and the laundry pair has a range of color choices to help inspire more ways to customize home laundry spaces.

SmartThings Energy — Recognized in the Software & Mobile Apps category, Samsung’s SmartThings Energy app provides an effortless solution for consumers to reduce home energy consumption. In addition to tracking energy usage, SmartThings Energy offers actionable insights and recommendations based on the devices connected to the platform and usage pattern.

Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink SSD 2TB — As an Innovation Awards Honoree in the Computer Peripherals & Accessories category, the Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink SSD 2TB is the company’s fastest PCIe 4.0 solid state drive (SSD) with superior power efficiency. Designed for gaming consoles or PCs, it delivers lightning-fast speeds for faster loading times. The combination of a heatsink, nickel coating on the controller and Samsung’s Dynamic Thermal Guard maximizes the cooling effects to prevent performance degradation due to overheating. The drive is also equipped with RGB lights to match the style of any setup.

Samsung Automotive NVMe BGA SSD 1TB (AM991) — This breakthrough advancement provides the industry’s highest sequential read speed for automotive storage, as well as an exceptionally large operational capacity for AD/ADAS, cockpit and vehicular infotainment systems. Earning recognition in the In-Vehicle Entertainment & Safety category, it also features the highest sustainable automotive write speed of up to 1150MB/s thanks to Samsung V-NAND technology, a proprietary in-house controller and an exclusive firmware design while functioning safely in even the most in-climate weather (-40’C to 105’C).

Samsung 512GB CXL Memory Expander — Recognized in the Computer Hardware & Components category, Samsung’s 512GB CXL Memory Expander module will be the first memory device that supports the eagerly-awaited CXL 2.0 interface and will come in an EDSFF (E3.S) form factor — especially suitable for next-generation high-capacity enterprise servers and data centers. This new memory module is built with an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) CXL controller, using DDR5 DRAM to support maximum bandwidth and capacity and for the first time, enabling memory to scale beyond tens of terabytes with the processing demands of big data and AI/ML workloads.

Samsung 16GB LPDDR5X and 1TB UFS 3.1 Multi-Chip Package — In the first integration of 14nm-based 16GB LPDDR5X DRAM and Samsung’s seventh-generation quad-level cell (QLC) V-NAND 1TB UFS (Universal Flash Storage) 3.1, this uMCP is providing a giant industry-leading leap forward. Honored in the Embedded Technologies category, the integrated UFS-based multichip package is taking the industry toward higher-density, higher-speed and low-power memory for premium smartphones and other leading IT applications.

Samsung ISOCELL HP3 CMOS Image Sensor — As a state-of-the-art mobile sensor with a 1/1.4-inch optical format and 0.56㎛pixel size for slimmer camera designs, the Samsung ISOCELL HP3 was honored in the Digital Imaging/Photography category. It features the smallest pixel technology in mobile cameras for greater design convenience and 200 megapixels that deliver the most detailed images available. The Tetra²pixel technology allows the pixels to operate in a 1.12㎛ or 2.24㎛ size, capturing more light information in low light and taking 8K video with minimal loss in the field of view. Furthermore, using Super QPD technology, the ISOCELL HP3 can detect autofocus information horizontally and vertically.

Samsung W920+RF 6550 Next-gen Enhancement for Wearables — Recognized in the Wearable Technologies category, Samsung’s Exynos W920 System on a Chip (SoC) and Exynos RF 6550 connectivity solution is a next-generation tandem offering that adds a new dimension to wearable devices. The Exynos W920 processor, built on a 5-nanometer (nm) Extreme Ultra-Violet (EUV) process node, includes an LTE modem and provides the performance demanded by next-generation wearable devices with a powerful GPU and dual-core CPU. The companion RF 6550 chip, built on a 28nm process, integrates Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GNSS connectivity with the utmost reliability into the Exynos W920 design.

IDEA is one of the world’s most prestigious design awards programs held by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), founded in 1980, to acknowledge achievements in industrial design. This year, IDEA has chosen winners in 20 categories, including Home, Consumer Technology, Digital Interaction and Design Strategy. Key criteria for evaluation also include Design Innovation, Benefit to User, Benefit to Society and more.

Samsung’s product design reflects the company’s changing values and innovative technology. The interactive, region-specific and advanced designs were recognized to be progressive and diverse.

“It is important to provide an optimized experience for changing consumer values and lifestyles,” said Jinsoo Kim, Executive Vice President at Corporate Design Center in Samsung Electronics. “We will constantly strive to provide sustainable experiences with creative innovations for our customers.”

Bespoke Won Two Golds for Its Customizable Designs and User Experiences That Fits Different Lifestyles

The Bespoke U.S. Kitchen Package (Bespoke U.S. Kitchen Package & Bespoke FDR RF8000B), a home appliance package including refrigerator, oven-range, microwave and dishwasher available in the North America region, was one of two Gold award winners. Based on the Bespoke philosophy that caters to the preference of users, the package provides an integrated design experience that emphasizes harmony in the kitchen space.

The design of the 4-door (French door) refrigerator, newly launched in North America, maximizes convenience for consumers as it comes with replaceable door panels that owners can choose according to their preferences and lifestyles. The Beverage Center, built into the interior to minimize contamination, stores clean and purified water, and the Dual Auto Ice Maker quickly makes Cubed Ice and smaller Ice Bites.

The Bespoke Jet, the cordless stick vacuum with an all-in-one Clean Station, has also won the Gold award for its excellence in design. It offers a unique experience that covers the whole process from cleaning and disposal to storage. After placing the vacuum on the Clean Station, users can empty the dust bin with a simple press of a button, keeping the home area and air fresh and clean from dust. The all-in-one design of the Bespoke Jet ensures convenience that also looks great to match any living space.

A Wide Range of Samsung Products Achieved Five Silver Awards and One Bronze Award for Their Advance Designs 

The Galaxy Tab S8, out of the Silver awarded, has been highlighted for its slimmest, lightest, but strongest body yet, combined with the largest 14.6-inch AMOLED display. The expansive display is protected by the Armor Aluminum frame, allowing the device to be scratch-resistant and less prone to bending. The tablet also features a dedicated S Pen charging pad on the back of the device that is seamlessly integrated with the camera housing for a satisfying design experience.

Another Silver winner was the Galaxy Upcycling at Home, a program that gives new life to older Galaxy smartphones by repurposing them into IoT devices with a simple software update. Through the SmartThings app, users can repurpose unused smartphones into convenient smart home devices such as a childcare monitor or a pet care.

In addition, other Silver awards went to:

• Samsung India Keyboard, which provides an optimized smartphone keyboard experience that supports faster & easier typing in 29 Indian languages.

• Cook Sensor, which helps you cook your favorite food much more easily by connecting the Samsung Induction Cooktop to the SmartThings Kitchen Service.
• Samsung Air Hood, a concept design that combines the functions of hood, air conditioner and air purifier to help improve the cooking environment in the kitchens of Southwest Asia.

The Bronze award was given to the Galaxy Z Flip3 case, which provides a variety of options to customize the phone using a ring or a colorful strap.

The world today faces many challenges. In particular, the pandemic has become a cause for us to back on the various challenges we’ve faced in the past, the biggest issue among those pertaining to the environment.

As a result, consumers have become more aware of the impact their choices are having on the environment and are practicing eco-conscious activities in their daily lives to compensate. This is especially applicable at homes where we spend most of our time. Consumers want home appliances that help create a sustainable home life.

In response to these consumer demands, Samsung Electronics introduced Bespoke Home Appliances in 2019, which includes not only customizable design and function but also sustainable solutions. Since its launch, Bespoke home appliances have received great reviews¹ from consumers and the industry and have expanded to more than 50 countries worldwide.

Now, we are taking that vision one step further to create the ultimate sustainable home experience. By combining SmartThings-based connectivity with the energy efficiency technology of home appliances, we are planning to become the No. 1 energy efficiency brand, expand sustainable efforts through meaningful collaborations and provide solutions to realize a Net Zero Home.

Vision of No.1 Energy Efficient Home Appliances

As the first step in bringing our sustainability vision to reality, Samsung Electronics is developing products with the goal of being labeled No.1 in energy efficient home appliances in the world.

As consumers’ lifestyles evolve and demands become more diverse, Samsung home appliances have also improved in performance and efficiency every year to meet those needs. However, improving the hardware of home appliances is only a part of our long-term vision. It is important to also consider ways to make new technology continuously more usable, creating more value for the users.

As such, this year, we introduced a new smart home service that can maximize the synergy among home appliances called Bespoke Home. At the center of this, SmartThings Energy monitors the energy usage of connected home appliances and automatically switches on AI Energy Mode, when needed, to save energy.

As we strive to become the No.1 in energy efficient home appliances, combining high-efficiency products with SmartThings Energy has proven to be very effective. Consequently, by the end of next year, nearly all home appliances will be Wi-Fi enabled allowing consumers to continuously reduce energy usage with ease. This also means that in the future, all Samsung’s home appliances will have AI-based energy saving functions built-in.

Sustainable Future Through Meaningful Collaboration

Secondly, Samsung Electronics is collaborating with other companies in search of sustainable solutions.

As evidenced by Bespoke appliances and SmartThings, intelligent synergies can have a significant impact on progressing our efforts. As such, in helping us reach our lofty goals for the future, we have sought out partnerships with companies that have similar sustainability goals.

With internationally recognized eco-conscious clothing brand Patagonia, Samsung Electronics has taken on the problem of microplastics being emitted into the sea. Sharing our expertise and know-how in clothing materials and washing technologies, we have developed new solutions that can reduce microplastic emissions from laundry.

To increase the effectiveness of this effort, the microplastic emission reduction course developed by Samsung Electronics and Patagonia will not only be available in new products released in Europe but also to existing products through software updates within the year.

The Ultimate Sustainability Experience with Net Zero Homes

Thirdly, Samsung Electronics is developing the ultimate sustainable home that can generate its own energy and reduce carbon emissions.

Through cooperation with Qcells, a complete clean energy solutions company, Samsung Electronics had developed the Net Zero Home. Inside, SmartThings plays a pivotal role in the efficient control of various devices including air conditioners, home appliances, to even the blinds. Furthermore, SmartThings Energy works together with the solar energy solutions of Qcells to present a blueprint for a house that can self-produce, store and efficiently power itself.

With the combined efforts of Samsung Electronics, Qcells and SMA, we will be able to create sustainable homes both domestically and internationally.

Samsung Electronics is also implementing a variety of carbon-neutral projects that can reduce the negative impact on the environment to make the vision for a sustainable future a reality. Specifically, this has meant switching to renewable energy that reduces carbon emissions such as solar energy and investing in wind power generation.

To learn more about how Samsung optimized the feature-packed vac to cater to consumers’ evolving needs, Samsung Newsroom spoke with vacuum cleaner engineer and project leader Jongkuk Lim and his team who were in charge of the appliance’s development. Read on to find out all you need to know about Samsung’s inspiration for the Bespoke Jet and the innovative technologies that brought the device to life.

Putting Consumers’ Needs First

Jongkuk Lim shares his team’s insights that show that today’s consumers increasingly prioritize hygiene and weight as key aspects of their cordless vacuum experience.

Recently, as people around the world have begun to spend more time at home, they’ve started to place more focus on keeping their living spaces clean. This has led to increased interest in stick vacuum cleaners that are both powerful and easy to use. As Lim explained, performance and ease of use were just two of the many factors that Samsung considered when refining the Bespoke Jet’s design.

“Markets around the world are quickly shifting from corded vacuum cleaners to a cordless robot or stick vacuums, which help reduce manual labor,” said Lim. “Because many homes outside of Korea are carpeted and have pets, it is essential for stick vacuums to offer excellent performance regardless of the type of flooring, and a sufficiently long battery time to cover the entire house. These are the most basic yet important consumer needs.”

That difference between homes in Samsung’s native Korea and those abroad underlines the importance of tailoring appliances to meet a wide range of consumer needs. As Lim noted, when developing the Bespoke Jet, Samsung prioritized cleaning performance and runtime while also ensuring that the device would deliver on two key aspects of vacuum design that are becoming increasingly important to today’s consumers: hygiene and weight.

“Korean consumers are largely satisfied with suction power, brushes and battery performance, but what sets them apart from other consumers is that they are very sensitive about vacuum weight,” said Lim. “They prefer strong yet lightweight vacuums.”

With consumers at home and abroad showing increased interest in hygiene due to COVID-19, Samsung equipped the Bespoke Jet with a Multi-layered Filtration System that traps up to 99.9999% of dust particles.¹ As air is sucked in, the main cyclone separates large dust particles, which are picked up in a metal mesh grille filter. Samsung’s patented Jet Cyclone and micro filter then catch fine dust particles. Finally, a fine dust filter traps micro dust² that can easily escape.

To illustrate how the Bespoke Jet caters to regional differences, vacuum development team member Hun Kang noted how people in certain countries are accustomed to wearing shoes at home, while others take them off. “Those who live in countries where people are expected to take their shoes off inside often live in houses with wooden floors,” said Kang. “We generally see high demand in these countries for wet mops.”

To meet their needs, Kang added, the Bespoke Jet comes with the Spray Spinning Sweeper.³ Its antibacterial mop pads are reusable, and it enables users to manually spray as much water as they want without worrying about the mop pads drying out.

Hygiene Is King

When designing the Bespoke Jet, Samsung paid particularly close attention to details and features that would deliver a powerful and hygienic clean. This commitment to cleanliness is reflected in features like the vacuum’s All-in-One Clean Station, which automatically empties the dustbin. As team member Daon Lee explained, this convenient feature is becoming increasingly more important.

“A few years ago, only a handful of robot vacuum cleaners could automatically empty their dustbin,” said Lee. “However, since the introduction of the Samsung Jet Clean Station, this capability has become a core function of vacuum cleaners, including stick models. With the growing need for hygienic products, being able to automatically empty the dustbin is no longer a ‘bonus’ for vacuums; it’s a key purchasing factor.”

When the Bespoke Jet is docked, the All-in-One Clean Station automatically begins charging the device and empties the dustbin so users don’t have to. When emptying the dustbin, Samsung’s innovative Air Pulse technology⁴ utilizes strong air pressure to prevent fine dust particles from scattering in the air, keeping living spaces clean and hygienic.

Lightweight Yet Powerful

Suction power was another key consideration for Lim and his team. The enhancements the team introduced in the new model maximize suction power by amplifying efficiency.

“The Bespoke Jet is equipped with a more advanced Digital Inverter Motor that is faster, smaller and more efficient than a typical motor, and also has a longer-lasting battery life,” said Lim. “This lighter motor produces incredible suction power. It’s capable of rotating at up to 135,000rpm, which is a significant improvement over the previous model’s maximum speed of 110,000rpm.”

The vacuum’s suction power is bolstered by Jet Cyclone technology. Equipped with 27 air holes that minimize suction loss, the feature’s high-efficiency multi-cyclone structure creates an optimal air path that reduces air resistance around the dustbin and hygienically traps fine dust particles sucked into the vacuum.

Lim also shed some light on how Samsung complemented the Bespoke Jet’s powerful innovations with a lightweight design that sets a new standard for stick vacuums to follow. “At just 2.44kg, the upgraded Bespoke Jet boasts the lightest weight in its class thanks to its high-performance, extremely lightweight motor that was developed through close collaboration between Samsung’s motor development team and others,” said Lim. “We also reduced the diameter of a drum inside the Slim Action Brush from 62mm to 44mm to make the brush even lighter and reduce wrist fatigue while cleaning.”

Convenient Cleaning

Samsung went to great lengths to equip the Bespoke Jet with an eye-catching design that’s both sleek and intuitive. The result of the team’s hard work is a vacuum that not only blends seamlessly with consumers’ décor, but also features key enhancements that maximize convenience.

As Lim explained, enhancing the vacuum’s form required careful coordination with Samsung’s design team to explore how to offer users more convenience while maintaining the device’s elegant aesthetic. “Through a series of discussions with the design team, we were able to come up with the All-in-One Clean Station, which can hold the stick cleaner without a separate cradle,” said Lim. “This enables the vacuum to look much sleeker while also taking up less space.

Yoonkyung Cho shares the process of trial-and-error the team went through to develop the most optimal brush design for the Bespoke Jet.

Other convenience-focused enhancements included the decision to add a soft roller to the Jet Dual Brush to pick up large dust particles from hard floors, and equip the vacuum with an intuitive LCD display and a long-lasting detachable battery. For the soft roller, team member Yoonkyung Cho explained: “We created several mockups in different styles to develop the most optimal design that would allow the front part of the brush to move in a natural way.

“The intuitive digital LCD display allows users to monitor key indicators such as runtime for each mode, charging time, maintenance and repair instructions for easy control and management, while the lightweight detachable battery guarantees up to 120 minutes of runtime,” noted Cho. “This means that users no longer need to worry about their vacuum’s battery running out while cleaning.”

Certified Performance

The Bespoke Jet has been recognized by various globally-respected testing and certification agencies for its excellent performance in trapping fine dust and allergens, including Germany’s SLG Prüf- und Zertifizierungs GmbH and the British Allergy Foundation (BAF).

The vacuum received the former’s highest five-star rating for trapping 99.999% of fine dust between 0.5-4.2㎛ in size, and was recognized by the latter for reducing exposure to allergens. In addition, the Clean Station is certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for reducing dust emissions by up to 400 times when the dustbin is emptied.

Lim noted that the pandemic complicated the vacuum’s development process, but the team couldn’t be happier with the final result.

“Working from home was not easy,” said Lim. “However, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, which limited our development activities, each of our team members worked hard towards a common goal. I am thankful to all of them for developing such a wonderful product that eventually received such excellent evaluations from external organizations.”

Innovating For Consumers

Daon Lee shares insights into the innovative journey the Bespoke Jet has gone on so far.

In previous years, the cordless vacuum cleaner market has been primarily focused on product specifications, such as suction, running time and device weight, but Samsung and Lim’s team have been innovating in this space with the introduction of the Clean Station in 2020. Since its introduction, the second most important buying factor in the Korean vacuum market is now the Clean Station, with a new emphasis having been placed on user convenience through the automatic emptying of the dustbin.

Going forward, the team’s focus has shifted from mechanical engineering to ergonomics in product design. “We plan to explore and develop new technologies and novel functionalities throughout the entire vacuum use process, from the very start of cleaning to the storing of the device,” noted Lim. “We will put our best foot forward to genuinely surprise our customers and lead rapid development in the vacuum cleaner market.”

With hygiene-forward lifestyles now here to stay, Lim and his team have a clear idea of what the future development of the Bespoke Jet and other vacuum products should look like. “My ambition is to provide the most optimal cleaning solutions based on consumers’ lifestyles that analyze cleaning patterns with the help of AI technologies,” affirmed Lim.

Building a Sustainable Future

At its core, Samsung’s vision for the future is built on what the company calls “everyday sustainability.” It is a concept that inspires Samsung to put sustainability at the heart of everything it does. The company has been realizing its vision by adopting new, low-impact product manufacturing practices, footprint-reducing packaging and a more sustainable customer experience, and by responsibly disposing of products at the end of their lifecycles.

Samsung’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions throughout the production cycle have also earned recognition from the Carbon Trust, the world’s leading authority on carbon footprint. Last year, the company’s Carbon Trust-certified memory chips helped reduce carbon emissions by nearly 700,000 tons.

Samsung’s efforts in this area extend well beyond semiconductors and include expanding the use of recycled materials. To introduce everyday sustainability to more products, Samsung’s Visual Display Business plans to use 30 times more recycled plastics than it did in 2021. The company also revealed plans to expand its use of recycled materials to include all mobile products and home appliances over the next three years.

In 2021, all of Samsung’s TV boxes included recycled materials. For this year, the company revealed that it will be expanding the use of recycled materials to include the boxes’ interior packaging as well. Now, recycled materials will be incorporated into Styrofoam, box holders and plastic bags. The company also announced the global expansion of its award-winning Eco-Packaging program. The expansion of the program, which transforms cardboard boxes into cat houses, side tables and other useful furniture items, will include packaging for home appliances such as vacuum cleaners, microwave ovens, air purifiers and more.

Samsung is also building sustainability into the ways that customers experience its products. Such experiences will be integral to empowering people to reduce their carbon footprint and make positive changes together for a better tomorrow. As an example, the company introduced notable enhancements to its first-of-its-kind SolarCell Remote, which eliminates battery waste with a built-in solar panel that can be charged during both day and night.

The enhanced SolarCell Remote gets electricity from radio frequencies in devices like Wi-Fi routers.¹ “What’s more, it will be included in more Samsung products – like new Samsung TVs and home appliances – with the goal of eliminating more than 200 million batteries from landfills.² When you line them up, it is the distance from right here, Las Vegas, to Korea,” said Han.

In addition, by 2025, Samsung plans to make all of its TVs and phone chargers operate on near-zero standby power, so that the products will consume almost no energy when not being used.

E-waste is another big challenge for the electronics industry, which is why Samsung has collected more than five million tons of e-waste since 2009. For mobile products, last year, Samsung launched Galaxy for the Planet, a sustainability platform that was created to bring about tangible climate action and minimize devices’ environmental footprints throughout their lifecycles.

“These are important steps,” said Han, “but we cannot achieve our goals alone. We believe open innovation and collaboration are keys to fighting climate change and protecting our environment.” With this in mind, Samsung announced that its eco-conscious technologies like the SolarCell Remote will be made open source, so that others can utilize them for their new devices too.

Samsung’s decision to make such technologies openly available reflects a commitment to innovation – and to everyday sustainability – that transcends industries. The collaboration with Patagonia that Samsung announced at the keynote demonstrates the type of innovation that can result when companies – even those from entirely different industries – come together to address environmental issues. The innovative solution that the companies are designing will help fight plastic pollution by enabling Samsung washing machines to minimize microplastics from entering waterways through laundry cycles.

“This is a serious problem, and not one we can solve on our own,” said Vincent Stanley, Director of Philosophy at Patagonia. Commending the hard work and dedication of Samsung engineers, Stanley described the working relationship as “a perfect example of the kind of collaboration we all need to help turn the tide of climate change and restore nature to health.”

“We are thrilled about this collaboration, but our work won’t stop there,” added Han. “We will continue to explore new partnerships and collaborations, aiming to address the challenges facing our planet.”

Empowering Users With Customized Experiences 

In addition to describing steps it is taking to advance everyday sustainability, Samsung outlined various ways it is advancing technology to cater to consumers’ diverse needs. Understanding that each person is unique and wants to customize their devices to suit their lifestyle, Samsung strives to find ways to help people redefine their relationships with everyday technologies. This people-first approach to innovation is a key pillar of the company’s “Together for tomorrow” vision.

The platforms and screens that Samsung unveiled at the event reflect the ‘Screens Everywhere, Screens for All’ era that Han alluded to at CES 2020. The Freestyle is a lightweight and portable screen that gives you a cinema-quality experience no matter where you are. Featuring AI-enabled sound, built-in streaming apps and a host of useful Smart TV accessibility features, The Freestyle can be set up virtually anywhere and projects up to 100 inches.

The Samsung Gaming Hub, meanwhile, offers an all-in-one platform for discovering and playing cloud and console games, and is set to launch on the company’s 2022 Smart TVs and monitors. Lastly, The Odyssey Ark is a 55-inch, flexible and curved gaming screen that takes immersion to the next level with a multi-view experience that allows users to play games, video chat with friends and watch gaming videos at the same time.

To introduce more tailored product experiences to consumers’ homes, Samsung announced the rollout of even more customization options for its Bespoke lineup of home appliances. This includes new Bespoke options for Samsung’s Family Hub and French 3-Door and 4-Door refrigerators, alongside dishwashers, ranges and over-the-range microwaves. Unveiled for the first time at CES, the all-new Samsung Home Hub takes connected home experiences to the next level with a SmartThings service that integrates with AI-connected appliances to simplify home management. Samsung Home Hub combines six SmartThings services into one convenient device that gives users complete control over their smart home and makes it easier to manage household chores.

To enable different types of smart devices to work better with each other, Samsung announced plans to make SmartThings Hub a built-in feature of its 2022 TVs, Smart Monitors and Family Hub refrigerators. Doing so will help make connected living experiences more accessible and seamless for everyone.

Pointing to the need to offer consumers the best smart home experience regardless of brand, Samsung also announced its role as a founding member of the Home Connectivity Alliance (HCA), which brings together various smart home appliance manufacturers. According to Samsung’s internal research, 39 percent of European consumers report that they view their home as a place for expressing themselves more now than they did before the pandemic. On top of that, 22 percent believe that the aesthetics of a purchase – how it will look in their home – is more important now than before the pandemic.

This has led to increased interest in a wider variety of colors in appliances. Prior to the launch of Bespoke, the vast majority of refrigerators sold worldwide were black or silver. Bespoke has changed this trend.

Globally, consumers have embraced light-colored fridges – with white fridges now accounting for more than 40 percent of demand and other light colors such as beige and pink also showing strong sales. In the U.S., white and navy each account for more than 20 percent of Bespoke demand and panel colors like gray, blue and pink also attracting consumers looking for something different for their kitchens.

Bringing Bespoke to the People

Since launching the Bespoke lineup, Samsung has gone to great lengths to offer consumers opportunities to experience Bespoke and get to know the refrigerator’s customization-first philosophy. These efforts include hosting a variety of online and offline events that illustrate Bespoke’s true value.

On social media, consumers were invited to creatively engage with Bespoke design through two social media campaigns. The #BespokeDinnerParty challenge asked consumers to put together dinner party ideas that were inspired by Bespoke colors, while the Bespoke Design Contest had consumers creating their own designs for the Bespoke refrigerator.

Additionally, Samsung created stunning experienced-focused brand showrooms in London, New York and Seoul where customers can visit and engage with the unique features of Bespoke products firsthand. The showrooms bring the Bespoke philosophy to life, decorated to demonstrate how Bespoke Home appliances can blend into a variety of spaces and lifestyles.

Not only does it make selecting a Bespoke color that matches your interior easy and convenient, but it also makes purchasing your refrigerator a breeze. If you need help or have questions, the website also features a virtual assistant so you can get answers in real time. Consumers in the U.S. can take the experience even further with the Bespoke AR Lens available in the Snapchat app, which allows you to use augmented reality to determine which Bespoke refrigerator will best suit your kitchen.

Efforts like these have led to Bespoke consumers increasingly turning to the online platform to make their purchases. Between January and August 2021, the proportion of Bespoke’s online sales saw a significant increase.  In the U.S., Samsung figures show that online purchases on samsung.com accounted for 45 percent of Bespoke’s total sales, compared to 3.4 percent for all refrigerators. In the U.K., online purchases on samsung.com accounted for 33 percent of Bespoke’s total sales, compared to 8.1 percent for all fridges.

In this first installment of ‘People Behind Bespoke’, Harry Choi, Head of Design for Digital Appliances at Samsung Electronics, discusses the origin of the Bespoke design philosophy and the role that it plays in creating appliances fit for every lifestyle.

Our homes are full of expressive elements. Everything from the architecture and the furniture to the decorative objects we place helps us express our individuality. However, even though they feature prominently in the interior, home appliances are still largely designed with a standardized approach.

If no two homes are the same, why should our appliances be? This was the simple question that sparked the idea for Samsung’s Bespoke – a lineup of home appliances designed to be a part of a person’s home décor, reflecting their aesthetic preferences and elements of identity. We focused on creating home appliances that are not just beautiful, but are also customizable so as to harmonize with all kinds of interior spaces, no matter the style.

The Birth of Bespoke

Our journey to elevate the design of home appliances began in the kitchen, a central space for many social activities in the home. The refrigerator is often the most visible and most used appliance in this social space, and yet, its design has largely been in stasis for many years.

With our Bespoke refrigerators, our aim was to elevate the design of refrigerators without compromising the reliable functionality and performance that Samsung products are known for. Taking inspiration from contemporary urban lifestyles and aesthetic trends, our designers created an expansive palette of colors for the refrigerator’s customizable door panels. They also developed unconventional finishes, such as matte steel and glass, to bring new textures to refrigerators and open up new possibilities for kitchen design.

But the Bespoke design philosophy goes beyond just colors and finishes. With a modular, built-in look, Bespoke refrigerators can be tailored to fit seamlessly into different kitchen layouts. Bespoke design has broken down the price barrier of built-in appliances and now, design is able to listen more closely to the consumer. By mixing and matching different modules, users can create Bespoke refrigerators that provide the right functionality for their lifestyle, dietary habits, and family size.

Creating Bespoke Lifestyles and Living Spaces

Building on the design and development process of the Bespoke refrigerator, we are now ready to bring the Bespoke design philosophy to the rest of the home, empowering users to create ideal living spaces while simplifying their everyday routines.

Take the Bespoke Cube air purifier, for example, which features a sleek, modern design that comes in various colors and interchangeable front grills in patterns like stripe and herringbone. The Bespoke Cube air purifiers are beautiful additions to any room, complementing your interior décor while quietly working to keep air quality safe.

Furthermore, the Bespoke Jet was designed with portability in mind. Unlike larger appliances, vacuums are meant to be carried around the house – but they are often hidden away when they are not being used. The Bespoke Jet’s meticulous design, with the body virtually floating above its round-shaped platform, gives the vacuum a sense of elegance that allows it to stand out in the open in living spaces even when not in use. Functionally, the Bespoke Jet’s all-in-one Clean Station and charging dock makes cleaning and maintaining household hygiene a breeze.

Gone are the days of one-size-fits-all home appliance design. We at Samsung believe that the shift toward customization is not just a trend, but in fact is the emergence of a new paradigm. As consumers’ lifestyle aspirations evolve and grow more diverse, Bespoke will be right there with them, offering appliances that transform functional interiors into truly expressive spaces.

To celebrate the refrigerators’ endless potential for personalization, Samsung teamed up with Wallpaper* magazine to host the Bespoke Design Contest. The contest invited consumers from all over the world to submit their own design for the Bespoke refrigerator.

The winning designs, chosen by an expert panel and by consumers’ popular vote, will be put on actual Bespoke refrigerators and be on display through the end of the year at the Samsung KX space in London.

1,581 Submissions

The Bespoke Design Contest offered contestants an opportunity to have their original artwork or designs be brought to life on a canvas unlike any other. The competition ran from July 7 to August 4, 2021, and brought in a total of 1,581 refrigerator designs from all over the world.

The top 50 designs were revealed on August 12, and were selected by a panel that included Wallpaper* editor-in-chief Sarah Douglas, Senior Vice President and Head of Design for Samsung Digital Appliances Harry Choi, Senior Vice President and Head of Samsung Design Europe, Felix Heck, interior designer Kelly Hoppen CBE and artist Yinka Ilori.

From August 12–22, the competition invited the public to vote for the top 15 entries by ‘liking’ designs posted on Samsung Bespoke’s Instagram page (@samsung_bespoke). The top 15 designs were revealed on August 25, which leads us to the moment we’ve all been waiting for: the reveal of the top three winners!

Ready for Their Close-Ups

The winning designs feature bold mixtures of colors that evoke the serenity of nature, as well as the feelings of joy and connection that come with cooking.

“Lost Landscape” by Rita Louis

The contest’s top prize went to Rita Louis for “Lost Landscape”, a design that features brushstrokes of milky white and bold blue ink. “I have always [looked] to nature when it comes to inspiration,” said Louis, who added that she created the design to evoke the same sense of calm she feels when observing nature or enjoying a walk.

The judges praised Louis’ work as “artistic, light and inspiring,” and noted that it works well both when the units are separated and when they are together.

“Foodie” by Weronika Slifierz

Second place went to Weronika Slifierz for “Foodie”, a design that evokes the joy of eating delicious food with a color palette inspired by ’90s-era illustrations. “My design is called ‘Foodie’ for a reason!” explained Slifierz. “I love good food, and I think everyone should take time to appreciate a good, healthy meal as often as possible.”

London-based artist and judge Yinka Ilori was particularly taken by Slifierz’s art. “I loved the use of colors, and the illustrations really put a smile on my face,” said Ilori, who added that the design would be perfect for her kitchen.

Third place went to Ioana Sabau for “nestled”, a cozy and colorful design that depicts two people leaning in for a kiss. Sabau was inspired by the belief that food always tastes better when making it with others. “I believe food brings people together, and that the time we spend in the kitchen can be [time when we are] connecting with each other,” explained Sabau.

Samsung Senior Vice President and Head of Samsung Design Europe, Felix Heck, described being captivated by Sabau’s art. “The colors, the scale, the symmetry and the cute, cartoony abstraction create a uniqueness and beauty that make me feel positive [about] this beautiful little love story,” said Heck.

Competitions like the Bespoke Design Contest demonstrate how the ability to customize devices enables a truly one-of-a-kind home experience. Going forward, Samsung will continue to explore ways to enrich that experience by putting the power of personalization in consumers’ hands.

Custom Cycle, a feature accessible through the SmartThings application, recommends tailored care routines based on your chosen fabric and garment type. The Bespoke AirDresser provides customized care for all types of sensitive garments with just a few taps and makes your special items last longer.

Free Up Your Schedule

Reduce the time you spend on housekeeping, and optimize your time management with the Auto Cycle Link and AI Dry features. When taking care of garments made of sensitive materials that may be too delicate for a tumble dryer, you can use the Bespoke AirDresser for worry-free drying after a wash.

The Auto Cycle Link feature recommends the most appropriate drying course once a cleaning cycle ends. Through its connection to your Samsung smart washer, it quickly and intelligently identifies the appropriate drying cycle on your AirDresser according to the wash cycle settings.

The Bespoke AirDresser’s AI Dry technology uses a humidity sensor on the inside of the door to enable faster drying too. By continually monitoring the humidity of the clothes in the drum, it intelligently reduces drying time to ensure your laundry is always dried thoroughly in the shortest possible time while not sustaining any damage.

With people spending an increased amount of time at home these days, it stands to reason that they would be looking to decorate the insides of their homes differently and more expressively. In particular, this has led to many going with an interior aesthetic that revolves around bright colors.

In May, Samsung Electronics introduced the Bespoke Home, which expanded the idea of Bespoke from the flagship Bespoke refrigerators to other appliances in the kitchen, then to appliances throughout the home.

The Bespoke AirDresser, the latest addition to the Bespoke lineup, has brought Bespoke design and smart features to Samsung’s innovative clothing care device. The product offers six different panel options in various finishes, spanning from Crystal Mirror to Cotta Charcoal, to allow users the freedom to find just the right fit for their home aesthetic.

Samsung Newsroom met with AirDresser product designers Jinsook Park and Jaejin Lee, and UX designers Haeyoon Park and Seungwoo Choi, to hear about how they designed an AirDresser with a Bespoke touch.

Accounting for the Preferences of Users Around the World

It’s not easy coming up with a design that will suit the tastes of such a broad range of users. The designers of the Bespoke AirDresser, in particular, had to put great thought into designing a final product that would captivate users from different cultures with varying values and living conditions.

The designers thus surveyed users, asking questions like where they would install the Bespoke AirDresser, how each member of their household would use it and what types of garments they would maintain with it. The insights gained from the surveys were then used to design the AirDresser’s clothing care experience. Samsung was also able to analyze clothing management experiences across different countries and generations from a total of 6,000 global users.

“People from different countries have different methods for taking care of their clothes. The global usage data for the first model laid the groundwork for the Bespoke AirDresser’s main features,” said Haeyoon Park. “We conducted interim assessments on not just the aesthetics, but also the convenience of the control panel and whether the option names and different clothing care cycles made sense to everyone.”

The designers also took accessibility into account to ensure they were creating a product that would be easy for anyone to use. “We did an ergonomic analysis and determined where the control panel should be, based on users’ average height and the viewing angle,” said Seungwoo Choi. “We also incorporated braille into the control panel for visually impaired users, and added different default audio tones for each option and process step in order to assist hearing-impaired consumers.”

Balancing Usability and Aesthetics

But for a solution to truly represent the best in home appliances, its beauty must be complemented by convenience. “We had to balance aesthetics and functionality while designing the Bespoke AirDresser’s range of accessories, such as the hangers that are made to maintain the form and fit of garments,” related designer Jinsook Park. “When outstanding usability is guaranteed, the beauty that the designers have established is accentuated all the more.”

It is also important to establish the right UX design. For instance, something as minor as the text being the wrong color or the sequence of information being slightly off can make the product difficult to use. “We’ve been working with GUI (Graphical User Interface) and UI (User Interface) designers since the planning stage to ensure that the product delivers information logically and consistently,” said Seungwoo Choi. “While working on the design, we conducted usability tests and strived to maintain a balance between usability and aesthetic appeal by studying whether design elements are affected by personal tastes, whether they affect usage patterns, and so on.”

Allowing the AirDresser to Become a Part of Day-to-Day Life

With its meticulous and detailed design, the Bespoke AirDresser is sure to be a fit with users’ interior spaces. The product’s door is designed to take up less space, while its replaceable front panel creates a feeling of spaciousness.

The panel is available in six different colors¹ and materials that include crystal mirror, glam and cotta. “If you need a mirror or are going for a gorgeous interior aesthetic, then go for the glam glass,” recommended designer Jaejin Lee. “If you would like to establish calm tones in your home, I recommend cotta.”

And the Bespoke AirDresser’s interface is a great complement to users’ day-to-day lives as well. The interface provides recommended cycles and automatic settings for each user so that they don’t have to worry about which cycle option to choose. For instance, if the user usually wears shirts on weekdays and outdoor clothing during the weekends, then the Bespoke AirDresser will display the shirt cycle first on weekdays and the outdoor clothing cycle first on weekends. “The Bespoke AirDresser recommends cycles using information like season, and also provides AI features to allow the users’ garments to be dried in the Bespoke AirDresser once they are done being washed,” said Haeyoon Park. “The more the Bespoke AirDresser is used, the more personalized and capable of fitting the user’s unique lifestyle it becomes.”

Making Home Appliances Fun

Even after the product has been launched, the designers are still working to make the Bespoke AirDresser captivating to everyone. “Home appliances provide convenience, but they can also come with stress because they are related to doing chores,” said Haeyoon Park. “We are continuing to analyze whether users experience any inconvenience in our quest to establish a product that makes consumers’ lives more convenient while also making using home appliances enjoyable.”

“Design trends are changing all the time, so I study trends in fields like fashion and furniture in order to better reflect users’ tastes,” said Jinsook Park. “I focus especially on furniture design, because it is a great reference for structure and design elements. I’d like to utilize this knowledge to come up with a design that provides convenience and meets users’ needs.”

These designers have strived to deliver both convenience and aesthetic beauty in the Bespoke AirDresser by delving deep into the lifestyles of consumers and analyzing their usage. Going forward, they will continue going to great lengths to provide users with the best possible experiences.

The Gold Award honors were given to BESPOKE AX9000N air purifier and BESPOKE City Color Edition. BESPOKE AX9000N air purifier was recognized for its innovative concept of letting the consumers choose the purifier’s front part design according to the consumers’ lifestyle.

The refrigerator features a FlexZone in its lower right compartment that allows you to switch between refrigerator and freezer modes as you require. The FlexZone now includes five different convertible modes to keep your food at optimal temperatures, including the brand-new “Fruits & Veggies” mode.

The two veggie boxes, or crispers, in the Bespoke 4-Door Flex also allow for more control over your food storage. The Crisper+ drawer is airtight, keeping fruits and vegetables fresher for longer, while the Flex Crisper can be temperature-controlled to be perfect for either for vegetables or for meat and fish. The storage modes on the FlexZone and Flex Crisper can be controlled either directly on the fridge itself or through the SmartThings app.

Of course, the Bespoke 4-Door Flex comes with Samsung’s signature cooling technologies including Triple Cooling, which independently cools the three separate compartments and enables customized temperatures in each; Metal Cooling, with an even wider metal plate for more even and fast cooling; and Precise Cooling, which ensures that the fridge is always set to the exact temperature you want.

The Bespoke 4-Door Flex refrigerator is not just a home appliance – it is as aesthetically customizable as a piece of furniture and as functional in your kitchen as the food products it stores. From its variable panels to its flexible storage and dispenser options, the Bespoke 4-Door Flex has been designed to fit your lifestyle, just as every “bespoke” item should be.

Introducing a More Tailored Take on Appliance Design

Customization is already a key feature of Samsung appliances. Guided by a design philosophy first introduced with a project known as Project PRISM, Samsung appliances cater to users’ unique needs, reflecting their lifestyles just as a prism refracts light into various colors.

That customizable, lifestyle-centric philosophy is epitomized by Samsung’s Bespoke refrigerators. The company’s flagship refrigerator lineup was first introduced in Korea in 2019, and has since expanded into global markets. Offering multiple types of modules (1-Door, BMF, 4-Door), along with panels that can be customized with various colors and finishes, the Bespoke range challenges industry norms by empowering users to customize their fridge to their décor, rather than vice versa.

Bespoke turned out to be a game-changer, driving two-thirds of refrigerator sales in Korea, and proving that consumers – particularly millennials – are in the market for appliances that answer their unique lifestyle needs. The refrigerators went on to launch in select markets around the world, bringing a revolution in home appliances wherever they went.

Launching the ‘Bespoke Home’ Era

In Samsung’s vision for the future, the concept of customizing appliances to fit users’ lifestyles does not stop with refrigerators. Indeed, the company is constantly exploring ways to add customizable elements to a wide range of appliances – from staple appliances like refrigerators to relatively new categories of devices, including air purifiers and the clothing care device AirDresser.

The company’s vision does not stop at hardware design, either. Equipping appliances with AI capabilities and connectivity will be crucial for creating more holistic and personalized user experiences. Washing machines that automatically relay cycle information to dryers, refrigerators that know when milk will go bad, air purifiers that switch on automatically when air quality drops – these are a few examples of how Samsung is using its leadership in connectivity and intelligence to put the consumer at the center of every appliance experience.

Not only will Samsung kick off Bespoke’s entry in the U.S. market with the unveiling of the all-new Samsung Bespoke 4-Door Flex refrigerator, but the company will also reveal exciting new ways that its smart appliances work with users and each other to make life easier for all lifestyles.

Samsung Electronics today announced that its BESPOKE refrigerator will be available in the U.S. this year. To be unveiled for the first time at CES 2021, the BESPOKE lineup will include an all-new 4-Door Flex format that has sleek lines and a contemporary flat-panel design with recessed handles, blending seamlessly into existing kitchens for various lifestyles. The 4-Door Flex also features a new Beverage Center and an improved Flex Zone. The lineup will also include Column and Bottom Mount Freezer formats, allowing for modular configurations that can grow to fit each household’s unique needs.

BESPOKE refrigerators offer a dynamic mix of design options, with eight unique colors and glass or steel finishes. Color options include Grey Glass, Sky Blue Glass, Navy Steel, Champagne Steel, Matte Black Steel, Navy Glass, White Glass, and Rose Pink Glass.

“As families spend more time at home—and in the heart of the home, the kitchen—they’re investing in home appliances they can personalize, which is exactly what our BESPOKE lineup offers,” said John Herrington, Senior Vice President, General Manager of Home Appliances. “BESPOKE refrigerators are customizable on the outside with a variety of colors, materials, and finishes that you can select to match your style, and also customizable on the inside with convertible drawers and other unique features.”

The 4-Door Flex Brings New Features for All Your Refrigeration Needs

Maintaining the sleek overall design of the unit, Samsung Bespoke 4-Door Flex comes with a new Beverage Center inside the upper-left door that provides quick access two different ways, with an internal, filtered water dispenser and built-in AutoFill water pitcher. The AutoFill water pitcher automatically refills with fresh, filtered water, or you can easily infuse the water with a flavor of your choice. The refrigerator also features a Dual Ice Maker, which can make not only regular ice cubes but also small “ice bites,” which chill drinks faster.

Samsung Bespoke 4-Door Flex features an improved Flex Zone, a versatile compartment that converts from fridge to freezer temperatures, offering the flexibility to meet a family’s food storage needs. The improved Flex Zone has five different temperature settings: Freeze, Soft Freeze, Meat/Fish, Fruits/Veggies, and Beverage. There is also a Flex Crisper that allows you to store meat or fish at the optimal temperature, as well as a Crisper+ that keeps your fruit and vegetables fresher for longer.

In addition to the U.S., Samsung is also introducing the BESPOKE refrigerator lineup across the MENA and European regions in 2021—expanding beyond the Northern European and Asian markets where it is currently available.

Samsung received the gold award for the Sero and the Bespoke customizable refrigerator. The Sero, which means “vertical” in Korean, has the ability to pivot between horizontal and vertical orientations. This new lifestyle TV features a modern and elegant design that stands out in any space. The Bespoke refrigerator, customizable to customers’ personal tastes, consists of eight models ranging from one-door to four-door units and offers a replaceable front panel of the sleek door which allows mixing and matching of different materials and colors, reflecting personal preferences in style. The ‘Kitchen Fit’ door was employed to give a ‘built in-like’ look to any kitchen.

Including the two gold awards, Samsung was given 34 other iF Design Awards in the product category:

• Galaxy Fold, a foldable smartphone that optimizes content viewing experience when unfolded and maximizes portability when folded.
• Galaxy Watch Active2, a smartwatch that has a soft, seamless silhouette with reduced bezel size for expanded viewing experience.
• Space Monitor, an integrated clamp monitor stand which helps maximize desk space and allows its users to reclaim their workspace.
• AirDresser, a clothing refresher that has a full-length mirror highlighted with a pinstripe pattern and color gradation to accentuate any space harmoniously with its premium look.
• Samsung Induction Plate, a portable and slim dual induction range, is ideal for cooking multiple dishes at once. It has a sleek design appearance, making it a refined centrepiece when placed on the kitchen or table.

Samsung won two iF Design Awards in the packaging category:

• Galaxy Fold package, featuring new graphics, showcases a folded version of the original Galaxy logo.
• Galaxy Note10 and Note10+ packages demonstrate an eco-friendly approach, removing unnecessary elements and using pulp mold.

Samsung won 17 iF Design Awards in the communication category:

• Foldable UX for Galaxy Fold offers seamless experiences between the cover display and main display.
• Emotional Air Conditioner UX emphasizes necessary information subtly yet vividly through ‘Ambient Lighting.’
• Samsung Flip UX is an intuitive electronic board UX that digitizes the analog experience to allow easy use.
• Samsung ‘Resonance,’ an exhibition in the Milan Design Week 2019 which was an integrated brand communication campaign to convey the spirit of Samsung’s design philosophy.

Samsung won eight iF Design Awards in the professional concept category:

• GEMS (Gait Enhancing & Motivating System), an exoskeleton that assists in posture correction and helps health management on mobile devices.
• Device Sync, a feature that enables effortless connection between IoT devices through Vision Recognition and real-time Generative Visualization technologies.

Organized by iF International Forum Design GmbH, the iF Design Award contest started in Germany in 1953. Design submissions are subject to comprehensive evaluation for design, innovativeness, functionality and seven additional categories including product, packaging, communication and professional concepts.
