It wasn’t exactly the Kodak Theatre. They didn’t have a long red carpet with cameramen pushing and shoving to get glamorous shots of celebrities in their hottest dresses. But there were top talents and industry leaders gathered from around the world. There were world-changing ideas exchanged. These men and women are at the top of their game. What brought these people together?

IDEA 2012

The IDEA(International Design Excellence Awards) 2012 Awards Ceremony took place at the annual IDSA(Industrial Designers Society of America) International Conference at August 18th 2012 in Boston. A board of nineteen judges carefully picked out finalists, and then Bronze, Silver and Gold Award winners amongst numerous applicants. As industrial design has evolved to represent more than aesthetics and cost reduction (we’ll talk more about this in the next IDEA 2012 article), judges came to their decisions based on innovation, benefit to users, benefit to clients, sustainability, social impact, insight and so on.

7 Awards and 13 finalists – Most by a single firm

Samsung is proud to share with you the fact that we won 4 Gold, 2 Silver, 1 Bronze Awards and had 13 other finalists – the most won by a single firm this year. (Click here and here to check out which products were awarded.)

Donghoon Chang (Senior Vice President, Design Group) and Junghoon Kim (Principal Designer, Health & Medical Equipment) shared their thoughts on Samsung being recognized as a leader in design.

The winning products – Gold, Silver and Bronze – were exhibited in a gallery next to where the annual IDSA conference took place. Many conference participants, mainly people from the design industry, came to see the star designs of the year and we had a chance to talk to them about. We also had a chance to chat with Samsung’s designers about the roots and philosophy of Samsung Design. We’ll be back with all that next time, so stay tuned!
