The beautiful game has long enjoyed a loyal fan base across the clubs of Europe. From Manchester to Milan, fans live through the highs and lows of their beloved team. Now, a recent study commissioned by Samsung Media Solutions Centre Europe whilst developing the newly launched KICK, the ultimate new football app for fans who love and live football, has revealed that a third (34 percent) of football fans across Europe think they know enough to be a top level professional football manager.

This belief actually manifests itself in their physical behaviour when they are watching a game. One in five (20 percent) football fans get so involved in the match that they tell others about the decisions they would have made if they were managers, with this number rising to nearly half (44 percent) when controversial decisions are made on the pitch. One in four (22 percent) also shouts at the TV, or from the sidelines about players’ performances.

Across Europe, it is Italian fans that emerge as the most vocally passionate, admitting to eight hours’ worth of football chat a week. French fans spend the least time talking about football at 4.1 hours a week.

Lee Epting, Samsung VP of Content and Services Europe commented: “Football is a topic that unites and bonds people. It can be all consuming for those that love the game, so it’s not surprising that fans feel they could do a better job than the manager of their favourite team. When we are passionate about anything, we are driven to know as much as possible and to be constantly updated. We then feel a sense of pride when we can demonstrate our prowess to friends and family. This thirst for knowledge when it comes to football led to the creation of KICK.”

The study also discovered that one in six (15 percent) of football fans across Europe check what’s going on in the world of football at least every hour to ensure their football knowledge is ahead of the game with almost half (45 per cent) of European football fans checking for updates once a day. This rises to 61 per cent of Spanish footie followers, compared to 33 percent of Germans. This thirst for the most up-to-date football facts is likely to be driven by one-upmanship as much as love for the game with a massive 63 percent of European football fans believing that it is truly important to be knowledgeable when discussing the game.

Dr David Lewis BSc (Hons) DPhil, Neuroscientist and Psychologist: “Knowledge can be authoritative and credible among fellow football fans. Their daily obsession with football means that this is the topic which most captures their imagination and holds their attention. It’s essential they can easily access fresh facts and figures, so they feel like they are in-the-know. A single wrong fact can produce an own goal that leaves the unfortunate fan sounding and feeling foolish among fellow football fans.”

Exclusive to Samsung devices and free to download from Google Play and Samsung GALAXY Apps, KICK combines score alerts and statistics, video previews and commentaries, with news and editorial, and even 3D analysis all updated as it happens, in real-time. The app provides fans with information previously only available to top broadcast professionals. With KICK, fans will really know more about football before others with customised score alerts, search and compare player and team statistics. KICK is also compatible with Samsung SmartTV, enabling football fans to sweep and overlay statistics, player information from their tablets and smartphones on to their Samsung SmartTV.
