Galaxy Tab S Explained: Design

The Galaxy Tab S, Samsung’s new tablet with Super AMOLED display, made its big debut at the Galaxy Premiere 2014. The specifications and features of the Galaxy Tab S are pretty cool, but what about its look? Mmm… So urban, yet so minimal! It is so hip, right? OK, that is it for compliments. Anyway, this unique style is based on this year’s Samsung design motto, ‘Modern Flash’ Does that sound familiar to you? Slimness and Light

The top priorities for the design of the Galaxy Tab S were ‘sleek and slim design’ of the premium style. First, the designers had to actualize both the delicately brushed and refined shiny metallic finish. Then the designers also used soft texture and matte finish to complete its premium look. This design is not only sophisticated, but it also protects the device from scratches and fingerprints even in firm grips. By the way, doesn’t the metallic frame give an illusion as if it is floating in the air? (Galaxy Tab S does not float.)

To make it more friendly for users, designers ergonomically designed the rear, having it softly tapered, for a cozy and comfortable grip. It is said that the designers also made constant efforts to bring mobility in style to the Galaxy Tab S by designing it slim and ultralight. We cannot argue with that. In the end, it is 6.6mm thin and 294g light (Based on the 8.4” Wifi model).

Minimalism

Many parts of the Galaxy Tab S were inspired by the modern urban architectures. From the ‘straight lines’ design concept to architectural aesthetics, including the balance between the tender texture and bold metallic frame, the elegance of the architectural minimalism is clearly presented in the Galaxy Tab S. As you can see no parts of the Galaxy Tab S seems unnecessary.

Design Consistency (Modern Flash)

The reason ‘Modern Flash’ sounds familiar is because Samsung tried to keep consistency with the Galaxy Series identity. The Galaxy Tab S shows the simple and modern design, using contemporary patterns, just like the Galaxy S5 or Galaxy K zoom. The refined, minimal, and sophisticated pattern is designed on the back and on its cover, which is also consistent throughout the many new Galaxy series this year. However, it may seem more subtle and simplified with square patterns rather than circular patterns.

In addition, the designers also used natural colors for the Galaxy Tab S, which comes in two colors: Titanium Bronze and Dazzling White. The color titanium Bronze, which is often seen in the high-end products, is a combination of titanium and rose gold color. While it delivers a gentle and modern feel, the luxurious color gives a timeless yet sophisticated mood.

The Dazzling White was inspired from white satin snow-covered fields. The designers added a subtle shimmery effect combined with white and rose gold color tones that change from different angles for a more premium with a cozy and comfortable look.

Delivering a premium design with reliability and comfort is the fundamental design concept of Samsung. The designers at Samsung also try to achieve a classic design, which gradually becomes familiar to consumers as modern and urban, a.k.a timeless design. Yes, it sounds like a very tough job to do. However, Galaxy Tab S seems to project the effort and philosophy of the designers at Samsung.
