980 apps submitted from 69 countries indicates soaring interest in the wearable market

Samsung Electronics announced the 200 app entries that made it into the first round of the Samsung Gear App Challenge 2014.

Samsung Gear App Challenge Round 1

The challenge was launched in May to support app developers around the world in their efforts to create apps optimized for Samsung wearable devices. A total of 980 apps were submitted for wide range of apps such as LBS (Location Based Service) app, schedule management app, RSS feed app, Samsung gear-linked game app and more with their developers coming from 69 countries including Poland, USA, South Korea and India.

“We are thrilled by the huge interest from developers around the world. There’s a very palpable enthusiasm to be part of the wearable ecosystem, and provide value and new experiences to consumers,” said Won-Pyo Hong, President, and Head of Samsung’s Media Solution Center. “The success of the competition demonstrates the growth potential in the wearable market. Samsung will continue to play its part to build a favorable environment for developers and to enrich user experience in the wearable market.”

A total of 200 participants will be selected from the first round of competition entries based on understanding of Gear features, user usability, and uniqueness of app. Each participant will receive a prize of USD 2,000 and move on to the next round. In the second round which begins on August 22, 40 finalists will be selected, with the prospect of getting a share of USD 850,000.

The overall winner of the challenge will receive USD 100,000 and the top 10 entries will go through a public vote for the Popular Choice Prize. The winner of the Popular Choice Prize will receive a BMW i3.

The final top 10 winning entries will be announced at the 2014 Samsung Developers Conference (http://www.samsungdevcon.com/) taking place at Moscone West Center in San Francisco, California from November 11 to 13 and they will be invited to exhibit and demonstrate their apps at the conference.
