Samsung has many divisions, regional HQs and employees all around the world. Taking advantage of the scope of its business, Samsung has been actively engaging  to connect with the local communities. For example, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. (SSI) has been running a strong citizenship program built on giving back to the community, advancing healthcare and driving STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) initiatives.  Last month, Samsung Semiconductor employees collectively donated checks totaling a quarter of a million dollars to four community organizations in a festive ceremony at the Americas Regional headquarters.

Second Harvest Food Bank

It is shocking to think that about one in three kids in Silicon Valley – one of the richest areas in the world – would go hungry without the support of the Second Harvest Food Bank.  SSI employees contributed the equivalent of 200,000 meals to needy Valley children with a $100,000 employee donation. In addition, 50 SSI volunteers helped sort food on August 15th. SSI actually has been working with Second Harvest for 20 years, supplying volunteers for food sorting days, and sponsoring food pick-ups and deliveries.

Imagine hearing that your child has cancer.  What would you do? Where would you turn? St. Jude Children’s Hospital changed how the world treats children afflicted with cancer – helping improve survival rates from as low at 4% when the hospital was founded to more than 90% today for several types of cancer.  There is so much more that can be done that Samsung Semiconductor employees have donated $75,000 to St. Jude. In addition, Samsung Semiconductor has set up its next Gears for Giving donation-seeking event on October 3rd for Samsung Semiconductor employees to Bike, Walk and Run in support of the fight against childhood cancer.

There is an innovator in all of us and the San Jose Tech Museum is on a mission to ignite that spark. Samsung Semiconductor will be sponsoring “The Tech Challenge” with a $50,000 employee donation.  The Tech Challenge is a hands-on design competition for students in grades 5-12 that was created to inspire the next generation of Silicon Valley innovators.  Employees from SSI’s Sales, Marketing and R&D teams volunteered at the Samsung Selfie Booth earlier this year gaining the admiration of hundreds of young innovators. The next challenge has students focusing on the real-world problem of erecting a structure able to support an earthquake; Samsung Semiconductor Inc. volunteers will be there to provide mentoring and coaching, while also serving as judges for the event.

Junior Achievement believes in empowering the boundless potential of students from K-12 to control their own economic success. Samsung is a National Bronze Level sponsor and Samsung Semiconductor employees are proud to help support this incredible effort. Samsung Semiconductor Inc. has donated $25,000 to kick-off its new Junior Achievement partnership in Silicon Valley and plans to support a JA Social Innovation Camp planned in the Fall.

These highly deserving organizations received the donations from SSI’s 20th anniversary management declaration bonus. Scott Birnbaum, SSI Citizenship Program Executive Sponsor said, “SSI employees are not only contributing money, but also their time in harnessing the power of Samsung to make the world a better place.”
